Inquisitio: AN ELEVENTH-CENTURY INQUISITION OF ST. AUGUSTINE'S, CANTERBURY

Excerpts from the account of the sulungs of the county of Kent, according to the king’s charter, namely those things which pertain to the church of Saint Augustine, and it is in the king’s Domesday.

Plumstede quam tenuit brixi cild tempore regis Edwardi se defendit pro ij. solinis et uno iugo. Modo tenet illud abbas de sancto Augustino de feodo episcopi Baiocensis et est appreciatum x. lib. sed tamen reddit xij.

Plumstede, which Brixi Cild held in the time of King Edward, defends itself for 2 solins and 1 yoke. Now the Abbot of Saint Augustine holds it of the fee of the Bishop of Bayeux, and it is appraised at 10 pounds, but nevertheless it renders 12.

Alia pars de Plumstede quam tenuit sorag tempore regis Edwardi se defendit pro ij. solinis et uno iugo et est appreciatum xij. li. sed tamen reddit xiiij. li.

Another part of Plumstede which Sorag held in the time of King Edward answers for 2 sulungs and
one yoke, and is appraised at 12 pounds, but nevertheless renders 14 pounds.

Ledes tenuit comes Lefwinus de rege Edwardo et defendit se pro tribus solinis et modo defendit se pro ij. solinis. Et etheloldus tenebat illud de episcopo Baiocensi sed nunc habet rex Willelmus illud in manu sua et est appreciatum xx. lib. sed tamen reddit xxv.

Ledes was held by Earl Lefwinus from King Edward and defends itself for 3 solins, and now it defends itself for 2 solins. And etheloldus held it of the Bishop of Bayeux, but now King William has it in his own hand, and it is appraised at 20 pounds, yet nevertheless it renders 25.

The book of this manor has
the Abbot of St. Augustine half a sulung near the gate of the park of Wicham, and rendered in the time of
King Edward 10 shillings. Likewise, from the same manor Count Robert of Eu holds 4.

woodland denns in Sussex which are appraised at 20 shillings.

Lenham, the manor is for the food of the monks of Saint Augustine; in the time of King Edward it was assessed for 5 solins and a half and is valued at 28 pounds; and in the aforesaid manor which is called Bromfeld there Saint Augustine still has half a yoke of land which lies to this manor and is valued at 5 shillings.

Middeltune manerium est de dominico regis et defendit se tempore regis Edwardi pro quater viginti solinis et est appreciatum illo tempore cc. lib. Et quando Hamo dapifer illud recepit tunc se defendebat pro lxxij. solinis unum iugum minus et erat appreciatum cc. li. xx. li. minus.

Middeltune manor is of the king’s demesne and in the time of King Edward it answered for 80 sulungs and was appraised at that time at 200 pounds. And when Hamo the dapifer received it, then it answered for 72 sulungs, one yoke less, and it was appraised at 200 pounds, 20 pounds less.

Ex hiis quater viginti solinis tenet Hugo de port viij. solinos et unum iugum de episcopo Baiocensi qui omnes consuetudines reddebant in isto manerio. Hoc quod tenuit Edwardus.

From
these eighty shillings Hugh of Port holds 8 shillings and one yoke from the bishop of Bayeux,
who rendered all customary dues in this manor. This which Edward held.

render in Newentone soke and sack and gavel and all customs outside Ama. Of these
solins St. Augustine has his share, which was adjudicated in the hundred of Middleton and in
the county of Kent in the time of King William the First.

Newentune manerium tenuit Sindgar de regina eaditha tempore regis Edwardi se defendit pro vij. solinis et dimidio et modo tenet illud Albertus et est appreciatum xxxvij. lib.

Newentune manor was held by Sindgar of Queen Edith in the time of King Edward; it is assessed for 7 solins and a half, and now Albert holds it, and it is appraised at 37 pounds.

Et hoc quod Archiepiscopus habet est appreciatum vj. li. et quod episcopus Baiocensis habet valet lx. solid. et Godefridus habet unum iugum de episcopo Baiocensi et valet x. solid. et Adam filius huberti habet tantum silvae quae valet xl. den.

And this which the Archbishop has is appraised at 6 pounds; and that which the Bishop of Bayeux has is worth 60 shillings; and Godfrey has one yoke from the Bishop of Bayeux, and it is worth 10 shillings; and Adam son of Hubert has only woodland which is worth 40 pence.

Et due mansiones sunt in roucestre quas episcopus Baiocensis tenuit quae reddunt huic manerio duos solid.

And there are two houses in Rochester which the Bishop of Bayeux
held, which render to this manor 2 shillings.

Concerning this manor, St. Augustine’s and Abbot Scotland established right to 8. prebends and the church, with all lands and customs pertaining to those, in the time of King William the First.

The manor of Wilrentun is for the food of the monks of St. Augustine; in the time of King Edward it answers for one sulung and is appraised at 4 pounds.

Badlesmere manerium tenuit godrich Wisce de rege Edwardo et defendit se pro uno solino et modo tenet illud anfridus de episcopo Baiocensi et est appreciatum iiij. libras. Hoc idem manerium reclamant monachi sci Augustini per cartam et sigillum regis Edwardi.

The manor of Badlesmere was held by Godrich Wisce of King Edward, and it defends itself for one sulung; and now Anfrid holds it of the Bishop of Bayeux, and it is valued at 4 pounds. This same manor the monks of St. Augustine claim by the charter and seal of King Edward.

Dernedale manor of St. Augustine in the time of King Edward, and it answers for half a sulung; and now Adam holds it from the abbot at gavel-rent, and it is worth 20 shillings.
Ethemesisfelde manor of St. Augustine in the time of King Edward answers for one sulung; now Ascetillus the marshal holds it from the abbot, and it is worth 40 shillings.

Schellingehelde est manerium sci Augustini tempore regis Edwardi se defendit pro dimidio solino et modo tenet illud annfridus masculus clericus de abbate et valet xxx. solidos.

Schellingehelde is a manor of St. Augustine in the time of King Edward; it renders service for a half solin, and now Anfrid Masculus, a cleric, holds it of the abbot, and it is worth 30 shillings.

Rapetune manerium sci Augustini tempore regis Edwardi se defendit pro uno solino et modo tenet illud Ansierus de abbate et abbas dedit sibi ad huc tres villanos cum ij. iugis terre et est appreciatum iiij. libras et v. solidos.

The manor of Rapetune of St. Augustine, in the time of King Edward, defends itself for one sulung, and now Ansier holds it from the abbot and the abbot moreover gave to him three villeins with 2 yokes of land, and it is appraised at 4 pounds and 5 shillings.

Sellinge manerium sci Augustini tempore regis Edwardi se defendebat pro vij. solinis et valet xv. libras.

Sellinge the manor of St. Augustine’s in the time of King Edward was assessed for 7 solins and is worth 15 pounds.

Rotinge manerium sci Augustini tempore regis Edwardi se defendebat pro dimidio iugo et modo tenet illud quidam villanus de abbate et est appreciatum xl. solidos.

Rotinge manor of St. Augustine in the time of King Edward was assessed for half a yoke, and now
a certain villein holds it of the abbot, and it is appraised at 40 shillings.

Keningtune sci Augustini tempore regis Edwardi se defendebat pro iiij. solinis et cum hiis solinis habet adhuc scs Augustinus unum iugum in dominio quod nunquam scotavit et est appreciatum inter totum x. libras sed tamen habet abbas quinquaginta solidos plus.

Keningtune of St Augustine, in the time of King Edward, rendered for 4 shillings; and with these shillings St Augustine still has one yoke in demesne which has never paid scot; and it is appraised in the whole at 10 pounds, but nevertheless the abbot has fifty shillings more.

Concerning the city of Canterbury. King Edward [had] in demesne 51. burgesses who rendered 3.

from which the men of the country and the burgesses of the city rendered to the king’s provost 20 shillings, and the toll
on bread rendered 20 shillings.

Sed fuit quidam prepositus nomine Brimannus qui per totam terram civitatis accepit omnes consuetudines et teloneum iniuste, de quo fecerunt monachi clamorem regi Willelmo qui precepit ut inde fuisset ante episcopum Baiocensem et ante Hugonem de Mundfort et Comitem Ow et Ricardum filium Gisleberti qui eum iurare fecerunt ut de hac re verum diceret, quibus post iusiurandum dixit quod verum teloneum habebat acceptum per totam civitatem sed iniuste de terra sce Trinitatis vel sci Augustini.
De molendinis vero que sunt infra muros civitatis si ex utrisque partibus aque ambe ripe sunt unius senioris tunc exclusam et molendinum potest mutare quo voluerit, ita tamen ut alterius molendino non noceat: et de rota molendini in spatio ij. particularum potest deliberare vj. animantes vel retro propter emendacionem molendini et ut dictum est alterius senioris molendino non noceat.

And if foreign merchants came into the city and took lodging on the land of the Holy Trinity or of St. Augustine, then their own provosts had it. But there was a certain provost named Brimannus who throughout all the land of the city took all the customs and toll unjustly, about which the monks made a complaint to King William, who ordered that he be brought thereupon before the bishop of Bayeux and before Hugh de Montfort and the Count of Ou and Richard son of Gilbert, who made him swear to tell the truth in this matter; and after the oath he said that he had taken the true toll throughout the whole city, but unjustly from the land of the Holy Trinity or of St. Augustine.
As to the mills which are within the walls of the city: if on both sides of the water both banks belong to one lord, then he can move the sluice and the mill where he wishes, provided however that he do no harm to another’s mill; and from the mill-wheel, within a space of 2. perches, he may clear a way for 6. beasts either forward or back for the repair of the mill, and, as has been said, let him not harm the mill of another lord.

And if on one side of the water the bank is of one lord and on the other side of another, then no construction or alteration of the sluice can be made without the license of him whose is the other part of the bank; and from the space of two perches thenceforward the water is in the king’s demesne.
And if the bread[-toll] or services were done in another manner than was established in ancient time, they wished to have from it the common forfeiture. But the aforesaid provost Brimannus took this forfeiture as though it were a toll.

Et omnes vie civitatis que habent duas portas hoc est introitum et exitum, ille sunt de consuetudine Regis. Et si aliquis facit forisfacturam aliquam unam leucam et in spacio trium perticarum et trium pedum illam habebunt prepositi regis de civitate. And all the ways of the city that have two gates, that is, an entrance and an exit, are under the King’s custom. And if anyone makes any forfeiture within one league and within the space of three perches and three feet, the King’s provosts of the city shall have it. And if anyone in this aforesaid space has made a ditch or has set a stake, or has encircled the King’s lane without the license of the King’s provost, wherever he who has done this may go, he shall be followed until the King has his forfeiture therefrom.

The bread toll rendered 60 shillings, and when Hamo received the ministry of this city all the king’s customs were as before, but now there are 32 burgesses fewer on account of the exchange of the castle, who rendered to the king 40 shillings and 2 pence.
Of these the Archbishop now has 7, and the Abbot of Saint Augustine 14.

and 11 are lost within the castle’s ditch. And still there are 212 free men, of whom the king has sake and soke.

Shoemakers and drapers render 30 shillings, and the porter 5 shillings. The mill, 65 shillings.

And from small debts, 10 shillings. In the time of King
Edward the office was appraised at 51 pounds. And when Hamo received it, likewise; but nevertheless
he who now holds it renders 30 pounds.

Outside the gate of the city, in the king’s bathhouse, there were two houses, one outside and the other inside, of which the monks of St. Trinity destroyed one and prevented the other from having been made, which used to render to the king 16 pence as gavel-rent.

mansions of land whence they had 53 shillings of gavel-rent
in the time of King Edward, and the king himself had thereof sake and soke. All these things are now held
by Ranulf of Columbelles and Vitalis of Canterbury from the fief of the Bishop of Bayeux; but they
acknowledge only 26.

Still the same Ranulf holds 5 acres of land with one church which pertain to the monastery of St Augustine.
Item the burgesses say that the same Ranulf holds 80 acres from their allods, and he himself says that he holds them of the Bishop of Bayeux. Still the same Ranulf holds 33.

Langeport manerium sci Augustini est j. solin in dominio et iacet in hundredo de Cantebiria et semper fuit et est quietum. Ibique fuerunt burgenses lxx. qui reddebant de gablo iiij.

Langeport, the manor of St. Augustine, is 1 solin in demesne and lies in the Hundred of Canterbury and has always been and is quit. And there there were 70 burgesses who rendered 4 in gavel-rent.

And the villeins and bordars who dwell outside the city render 8 pounds and 10 shillings and 8.

This manor in total is appraised at 35 pounds.
Further, St. Augustine has outside the city in demesne half a solin and 4.

In hundredo de Canterberia habet Archiepiscopus manerium Norgate et est de cibo monachorum sanctae trinitatis. Tempore regis Edwardi se defendit pro uno solino cui nunc subiacent c. burgenses xix. minus qui reddunt ix. lib.

In the hundred of Canterbury the Archbishop has the manor of Norgate and it is for the food of the monks
of the Holy Trinity. In the time of King Edward it answered for one solin, to which there now are subject 100.
burgesses, 19 fewer, who render 9 pounds.

and 6 pence in gavel, and it is appraised at 17 pounds.

Item habet archiepiscopus unum manerium in dominio nomine Stursete. Tempore regis Edwardi se defendit pro vij. solinis et sunt ibi xxv.

Likewise the archbishop has one manor in demesne named Stursete. In the time of King Edward it was assessed for 7 sulungs, and there are 25 there.

Of these 7 sulungs, Godfrey the steward has 1 sulung from the archbishop, and it is appraised at 100 shillings. Likewise also Vitalis holds 1 yoke, and it is appraised at 30 shillings.

Adhuc tenet etiam elwardus liberaliter tria iuga in Ratindune quae dant altari sanctae trinitatis xij. sol.

But also Hamo holds half a solin.
Further, elwardus also holds freely three yokes in Ratindune, which pay to the altar of the Holy Trinity 12 shillings.

and they are appraised at 40 shillings.

Ratingdune tenet Hamo dapifer de episcopo Baiocensi. T.R.E. se defendit pro dimidio solino et est appreciatum iij. lib.

Ratingdune Hamo the dapifer holds from the bishop of Bayeux.
In the time of King Edward it answered for half a solin, and it is appraised at 3 pounds.

Ad sanctum Martinum habet archiepiscopus in dominio unum solinum et iacet in vij. solinis de Stursete et valet dominium vij.

This half solin the burgesses of the city claim, just as the other aforesaid land.
At Saint Martin the archbishop has in demesne one solin, and it lies in 7 solins of Stursete, and the demesne is worth 7.

pounds from this sulung. Ralph the chamberlain holds a moiety in fief from the Archbishop, and it is worth 4.

There are still 32 manses of land and one mill, which the clerics of the city hold for geld: and there dwell 12 burgesses who render to them 35.

The manor of Burne of Saint Augustine, in the time of King Edward, defends itself for one solin and is valued at 100 shillings.

Aliud manerium burnes tenuit liinges de rege Edwardo et defendit se pro ij. solinis et modo tenet illud Baiocensis episcopus in dominio et est appreciatum xij. libras sed reddit xviij. libras.

Another manor of Burne Liinges held of King Edward and it defends itself for 2 solins, and now holds
it the Bishop of Bayeux in demesne, and it is appraised at 12 pounds but renders 18 pounds.

Wicham manerium tenuit elured bigge de rege Edwardo et defendit se pro x. solinis et modo tenet illud episcopus Baiocensis in dominio et est appreciatum xxx. libras.

If any man shall have made a hedge or a ditch whereby the king’s path is constricted, or shall have made a pit in that path, or shall have fixed a stake, or shall have cut a standing tree within the path, or if a standing tree outside the path by falling shall have fallen within, and afterwards shall have carried away a branch or foliage or the tree itself without license, for each of these forfeitures he shall pay the king 100 shillings. And even if he shall have gone home thence not impleaded nor put under surety, nevertheless the king’s reeve would pursue him wherever he may be, and he shall make amends to the king 100 shillings.

Concerning grith-breach, indeed: if anyone commits it, and, having been accused or distrained, commits it on the highway, he shall make amends to the king 8 pounds. But otherwise he shall be quit with respect to the king, not as against the lord whose man he was.

Over them the king has only the forfeiture concerning their heads (i.e., capital). And when an allodary dies, the king has the relief from his lands, he who had his own sake and soke.

And of a thief who is judged to death the king has half of his money; and of a huthlag who shall have been outlawed, whoever afterwards received him without license, the king has forfeiture thereof.
