3. For the Holy Spirit is not the spirit of the Father only or of the Son only, but the spirit of the Father and the Son; it is written, for example: 'If anyone loves the world, the Spirit of the Father is not in him'; likewise it is written: 'But whoever does not have the spirit of Christ is not his.' Thus, with Father and Son named the Holy Spirit is understood, concerning whom the Son himself says in the Gospel that the Holy Spirit 'proceeds from the Father' and 'will receive from me and will announce to you.'

1. After these prophetic and evangelical and apostolic scriptures which we have above set forth, by which the catholic church is founded through the grace of God, we thought it also to be intimated that, although the churches spread catholic through the whole orb are one bridal-chamber of Christ, yet the holy Roman Church, without other churches being constituted by synods, is preferred to the rest of the churches, but obtained primacy by the evangelical voice of our Lord and Saviour saying, 'You are Peter,' he says, 'and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it; and I will give to you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound also in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed also in heaven.'
2. Added also is the fellowship of the most blessed Paul the apostle, 'vessel of election', who, not at a different time, as heretics garrulousily boast, but at one and the same time on the same day, suffering a glorious death with Peter in the city of Rome under Caesar Nero, was crowned while agonizing; and together they consecrated the aforesaid holy Roman church to Christ the Lord and, by their presence and venerable triumph, set it before all other cities throughout the whole world.
IV.
4. And although “no one can lay any other foundation than that which is laid, Christ Jesus,” yet for edification the same holy Roman Church does not forbid that, after those scriptures of the Old and of the New Testament which we have regularly enumerated above, these scriptures also be received:
Item opuscula beati Caecilii Cypriani martyris et Cathaginensis episcopi;

item opuscula beati Ambrosii Mediolanensis episcopi;
item opuscula beati Augustini Hipporegiensis episcopi;
item opuscula beati Hieronimi presbyteri;
item opuscula beati Prosperi viri religiosissimi;
Also the minor works of blessed Caecilius Cyprian, martyr and bishop of Carthage;
also the minor works of blessed Gregory Nazianzen, bishop;
also the minor works of blessed Basil of Cappadocia, bishop;
also the minor works of blessed John of Constantinople, bishop;
also the minor works of blessed Theophilus of Alexandria, bishop;
also the minor works of blessed Cyril of Alexandria, bishop;
also the minor works of blessed Hilary of Poitiers, bishop;
also the minor works of blessed Ambrose of Milan, bishop;
also the minor works of blessed Augustine of Hippo Regius, bishop;
also the minor works of blessed Jerome, presbyter;
also the minor works of blessed Prosper, a most religious man;
4. also the acts of the holy martyrs, which shine forth with manifold tortures’ cruciations and the miraculous triumphs of their confessions. Who among Catholics will doubt that they endured greater things in their agonies, and not by their own viribus but by God’s grace and assistance bore all things? But therefore, according to ancient custom, they are not read in the holy Roman Church, out of singular caution, because both the names of those who wrote them are utterly unknown and they are thought by infidels and idiots to be superfluous or less apt than the order of the matter; as the passions of a certain Cyricus and Iulitta, as also those of Georgius and others of that kind, which are reported to have been composed by heretics.
also the writing concerning the finding of the cross and another writing concerning the finding of the head of blessed John the Baptist are indeed recent accounts and some Catholics read them; but when these have come into the hands of Catholics, let the judgment of blessed Paul the Apostle precede: 'test everything; hold fast to what is good.'
also Rufinus, a most religious man, published very many books of ecclesiastical work, and even rendered interpretations of certain scriptures; but since the venerable Jerome has noted him in some matters concerning the freedom of the will, we hold those things which we know the aforesaid blessed Jerome to have thought; and not only concerning Rufinus, but also concerning all whom the oft-mentioned man reproved with zeal for God and the religion of faith.
item chronica Eusebii Caesariensis atque eiusden historiae ecclesiasticae libros, quamvis in primo narrationis suae libro tepuerit et post in laudibus atque excusatione Origenis scismatici unum conscripserit librum, propter rerum tamen singularum notitiam, quae ad instructionem pertinent, usque quaque non dicimus renuendos.
item the chronicles of Eusebius of Caesarea and the books of his Ecclesiastical History, although in the first book of his narrative he was lukewarm and afterwards composed one book in praise and in excuse of the schismatic Origen, nevertheless—because of the knowledge of certain singular matters which pertain to instruction—we do not in every respect declare them to be rejected.
5. The Catholic and Apostolic Roman Church receives in no wise the other things that have been written or preached by heretics or schismatics; of which a few, which have come to memory and are to be avoided by Catholics, we have thought ought to be set down:

These and similar doctrines which Simon Magus, Nicolaus, Cerinthus, Marcion, Basilides, Ebion, Paulus also Samosatenus, Photinus and Bonosus, who fell away in like error, Montanus likewise with his most obscene followers, Apollinaris, Valentinus or Manicheus, Faustus Africanus, Sabellius, Arrius, Macedonius, Eunomius, Novatus, Sabbatius, Calistus, Donatus, Eustathius, Iovinianus, Pelagius, Iulianus of Eclanum, Caelestius, Maximianus, Priscillianus from Hispania, Nestorius of Constantinople, Maximus the Cynic, Lampetius, Dioscurus, Eutyches, Petrus and another Petrus, of whom one defiled Alexandria, the other Antioch, Acacius of Constantinople with his associates, and moreover all heresies and the disciples of heresies or schismatics who taught or wrote—whose names we have by no means retained—we confess to be not only repudiated but expelled from the whole Roman catholic and apostolic Church, and with their authors and followers we acknowledge to be damned for ever under the indissoluble bond of anathema.
