1 1 Vocavit autem Moysen, et locutus est ei Dominus de tabernaculo testimonii, dicens: 2 Loquere filiis Israël, et dices ad eos: Homo, qui obtulerit ex vobis hostiam Domino de pecoribus, id est, de bobus et ovibus offerens victimas, 3 si holocaustum fuerit ejus oblatio, ac de armento: masculum immaculatum offeret ad ostium tabernaculi testimonii, ad placandum sibi Dominum: 4 ponetque manum super caput hostiæ, et acceptabilis erit, atque in expiationem ejus proficiens. 5 Immolabitque vitulum coram Domino, et offerent filii Aaron sacerdotes sanguinem ejus, fundentes per altaris circuitum, quod est ante ostium tabernaculi: 6 detractaque pelle hostiæ, artus in frusta concident. 7 Et subjicient in altari ignem, strue lignorum ante composita: 8 et membra quæ sunt cæsa, desuper ordinantes, caput videlicet, et cuncta quæ adhærent jecori, 9 intestinis et pedibus lotis aqua: adolebitque ea sacerdos super altare in holocaustum et suavem odorem Domino.
1 1 But he called Moses, and the Lord spoke to him from the tabernacle of testimony, saying: 2 Speak to the sons of Israel, and you shall say to them: A man who from among you shall have offered a host to the Lord from the livestock, that is, offering victims from oxen and sheep, 3 if his oblation be a holocaust, and from the herd: he shall offer a male without blemish at the entrance of the tabernacle of testimony, to make the Lord propitious to himself: 4 and he shall place his hand upon the head of the victim, and it shall be acceptable, and shall profit for his expiation. 5 And he shall immolate the calf before the Lord, and the sons of Aaron, priests, shall present its blood, pouring it around the altar which is before the entrance of the tabernacle: 6 and, the skin of the victim having been pulled off, they shall cut the limbs into pieces. 7 And they shall set fire on the altar, with a pile of wood previously arranged: 8 and arranging above the members which have been cut, namely the head, and all that adheres to the liver, 9 the intestines and the feet having been washed with water: and the priest shall burn them upon the altar as a holocaust and a sweet odor to the Lord.
10 But if the oblation is from the flock, a holocaust from sheep or from goats, he shall offer a male without blemish: 11 and he shall immolate it at the side of the altar that looks toward the north, before the Lord: and its blood the sons of Aaron shall pour upon the altar all around: 12 and they shall divide the members, the head, and all that adheres to the liver, and they shall place them upon the wood, under which the fire is to be put: 13 but the intestines and the feet they shall wash with water. And the priest shall burn all that has been offered upon the altar as a holocaust and a most sweet odor to the Lord. 14 But if the oblation of a holocaust to the Lord is from birds, from turtle-doves or the young of a dove, 15 the priest shall offer it at the altar: and, the head twisted at the neck, and the place of the wound torn open, he shall cause the blood to run down upon the ledge of the altar: 16 but the crop of the throat and the feathers he shall throw near the altar on the eastern side, in the place where the ashes are wont to be poured out, 17 and he shall break its wings, and he shall not cut it, nor divide it with iron, and he shall burn it upon the altar, with fire put beneath the wood.
It is a holocaust and an oblation of a most sweet odor to the Lord. 2 1 When a soul offers an oblation of sacrifice to the Lord, fine flour shall be his oblation; and he shall pour oil upon it, and put frankincense upon it, 2 and he shall bring it to the sons of Aaron, the priests: one of whom shall take a handful full of the fine flour and oil, and all the frankincense, and shall place its memorial upon the altar for an odor most sweet to the Lord. 3 But whatever shall remain of the sacrifice shall be Aaron’s and his sons’, a Holy of holies from the oblations of the Lord.
4 But when you offer a sacrifice cooked in an oven: from fine flour, namely loaves without leaven, sprinkled with oil, and lagana, unleavened, smeared with oil. 5 If your oblation shall be from a frying-pan, of fine flour mixed with oil and without leaven, 6 you shall divide it into small pieces, and you shall pour oil upon it. 7 But if the sacrifice shall be from a griddle, likewise the fine flour shall be sprinkled with oil: 8 which, offering to the Lord, you shall hand over into the hands of the priest.
9 Who, when he has offered it, will take a memorial from the sacrifice, and will burn it upon the altar for an odor of sweetness to the Lord: 10 but whatever remains shall be Aaron’s and his sons’, a most holy thing of the oblations of the Lord. 11 Every oblation that shall be offered to the Lord shall be made without leaven, nor shall anything of leaven and of honey be burned in sacrifice to the Lord. 12 Only their firstfruits and gifts shall you offer: but upon the altar they shall not be set for an odor of sweetness.
13 Whatever sacrifice you shall offer, you shall season with salt, nor shall you remove the salt of the covenant of your God from your sacrifice: in every oblation of yours you shall offer salt. 14 But if you shall offer as a gift the first-fruits of your produce to the Lord from ears still green, you shall roast them with fire, and you shall crush them in the manner of grain, and thus you shall offer your first-fruits to the Lord, 15 pouring oil over it, and putting frankincense on, because it is an oblation of the Lord: 16 of which the priest shall burn in memory a part of the broken grain as a gift, and of the oil, and all the frankincense. 3 1 But if his oblation be a sacrifice of peace-offerings, and he shall wish to offer from the cattle, a male or a female, he shall offer it without blemish before the Lord.
2 And he shall place his hand upon the head of his victim, which shall be immolated at the entrance of the tabernacle of the testimony, and the sons of Aaron, the priests, shall pour out the blood around the circuit of the altar. 3 And from the sacrifice of peace-offerings they shall offer, as an oblation to the Lord, the fat which covers the vitals, and whatever fat is within: 4 the two kidneys with the fat by which the loins are covered, and the reticulum of the liver with the little kidneys. 5 And they shall burn these upon the altar as a holocaust, with wood the fire being placed underneath, as an oblation of most sweet odor to the Lord.
6 If indeed his oblation shall be from the sheep, and a victim of peace-offerings, whether he offers a male or a female, they shall be unblemished. 7 If he offers a lamb before the Lord, 8 he shall put his hand upon the head of his victim: which shall be immolated in the vestibule of the tabernacle of testimony: and the sons of Aaron shall pour out its blood around the circuit of the altar. 9 And they shall offer from the victim of peace-offerings a sacrifice to the Lord: the fat and the whole tail 10 with the kidneys, and the fat which covers the belly and all the vital organs, and both little kidneys with the fat which is next to the loins, and the reticulum of the liver with the little kidneys.
11 And the priest will burn them upon the altar as food of the fire and of the oblation of the Lord. 12 If his oblation is from a she-goat, and he offers it to the Lord, 13 he shall place his hand upon its head: and he shall immolate it at the entrance of the tabernacle of testimony, and the sons of Aaron shall pour out its blood around the circuit of the altar. 14 And they shall take from it, for the feeding of the Lord’s fire, the fat that covers the belly, and that which covers all the vitals: 15 the two kidneys with the caul that is over them near the loins, and the fat of the liver with the kidneys: 16 and the priest shall burn them upon the altar for the nourishment of the fire, and of a most sweet odor.
All fat shall be the Lord’s 17 by a perpetual statute in your generations and in all your habitations: you shall not eat blood nor fat at all. 4 1 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 2 Speak to the sons of Israel: A soul which shall have sinned through ignorance, and, of all the commandments of the Lord which he commanded not to be done, shall have done anything: 3 if the priest who is anointed shall have sinned, causing the people to be delinquent, he shall offer for his sin a bull-calf without blemish to the Lord: 4 and he shall bring it to the door of the tabernacle of testimony before the Lord, and he shall lay his hand upon its head, and he shall immolate it to the Lord. 5 He shall also draw from the blood of the bull, bringing it into the tabernacle of testimony.
6 And when he has dipped his finger in the blood, he shall sprinkle with it seven times before the Lord against the veil of the sanctuary. 7 And he shall put of the same blood upon the horns of the altar of incense most pleasing to the Lord, which is in the tabernacle of testimony: but all the remaining blood he shall pour out at the base of the altar of the burnt offering at the entrance of the tabernacle. 8 And the fat of the calf he shall remove for sin, both that which covers the vital parts and all that which is within: 9 the two kidneys and the caul that is upon them near the loins, and the fat of the liver with the kidneys, 10 as it is taken away from the calf of the sacrifice of peace-offerings: and he shall burn them upon the altar of the burnt offering.
11 But the hide and all the flesh, with the head and the feet and the entrails and the dung, 12 and the remaining body, he shall carry out outside the camp to a clean place where ashes are accustomed to be poured out: and he shall ignite them upon a heap of wood, which in the place of the poured-out ashes shall be cremated.
13 Quod si omnis turba Israël ignoraverit, et per imperitiam fecerit quod contra mandatum Domini est, 14 et postea intellexerit peccatum suum, offeret pro peccato suo vitulum, adducetque eum ad ostium tabernaculi. 15 Et ponent seniores populi manus super caput ejus coram Domino. Immolatoque vitulo in conspectu Domini, 16 inferet sacerdos, qui unctus est, de sanguine ejus in tabernaculum testimonii, 17 tincto digito aspergens septies contra velum.
13 But if the whole crowd of Israel has been ignorant, and through inexperience has done what is against the mandate of the Lord, 14 and afterwards understands its sin, it shall offer a bull-calf for its sin, and shall bring it to the entrance of the tabernacle. 15 And the elders of the people shall lay their hands upon its head before the Lord. And when the bull-calf has been immolated in the sight of the Lord, 16 the priest who is anointed shall bring in some of its blood into the tabernacle of testimony, 17 with his finger dipped, sprinkling seven times against the veil.
18 And he will place some of the same blood upon the horns of the altar, which is before the Lord in the tabernacle of the testimony: but the rest of the blood he will pour out beside the base of the altar of holocausts, which is at the entrance of the tabernacle of the testimony. 19 And he will take away all its fat, and will burn it upon the altar: 20 doing thus also with this bull-calf as he did previously: and as the priest intercedes for them, the Lord will be propitious to them. 21 But the bull-calf itself he will carry out outside the camp, and will burn it just as the former bull-calf: because it is for the sin of the multitude.
22 Si peccaverit princeps, et fecerit unum e pluribus per ignorantiam, quod Domini lege prohibetur: 23 et postea intellexerit peccatum suum, offeret hostiam Domino, hircum de capris immaculatum. 24 Ponetque manum suam super caput ejus: cumque immolaverit eum loco ubi solet mactari holocaustum coram Domino, quia pro peccato est, 25 tinget sacerdos digitum in sanguine hostiæ pro peccato, tangens cornua altaris holocausti, et reliquum fundens ad basim ejus. 26 Adipem vero adolebit supra, sicut in victimis pacificorum fieri solet: rogabitque pro eo sacerdos, et pro peccato ejus, et dimittetur ei.
22 If a prince shall sin, and do one of many things through ignorance which is prohibited by the law of the Lord: 23 and afterwards he understands his sin, he shall offer a victim to the Lord, a he-goat from the goats, immaculate. 24 And he shall place his hand upon its head: and when he has immolated it in the place where the holocaust is wont to be slaughtered before the Lord, because it is for sin, 25 the priest shall dip his finger in the blood of the victim for sin, touching the horns of the altar of the holocaust, and pouring the rest at its base. 26 But the fat he shall burn upon it, as it is wont to be done in the victims of peace-offerings: and the priest shall plead for him, and for his sin, and it shall be remitted to him.
27 Quod si peccaverit anima per ignorantiam, de populo terræ, ut faciat quidquam de his, quæ Domini lege prohibentur, atque delinquat, 28 et cognoverit peccatum suum, offeret capram immaculatam. 29 Ponetque manum super caput hostiæ quæ pro peccato est, et immolabit eam in loco holocausti. 30 Tolletque sacerdos de sanguine in digito suo: et tangens cornua altaris holocausti, reliquum fundet ad basim ejus.
27 But if a soul should sin through ignorance, from the people of the land, so as to do anything of those things which are prohibited by the law of the Lord, and commit an offense, 28 and he comes to know his sin, he shall offer an immaculate she-goat. 29 And he shall place his hand upon the head of the victim which is for sin, and he shall immolate it in the place of the holocaust. 30 And the priest shall take of the blood on his finger; and, touching the horns of the altar of the holocaust, he shall pour the remainder out at its base.
31 But removing all the fat, as it is accustomed to be removed from the victims of the peace-offerings, he will burn it upon the altar into an odor of sweetness to the Lord: and he will intercede for him, and it will be forgiven him. 32 But if he offers from the flock a victim for sin, namely an immaculate sheep: 33 he will place his hand upon its head, and he will immolate it in the place where the victims of the holocausts are accustomed to be slain. 34 And the priest will take of its blood with his finger, and, touching the horns of the altar of the holocaust, he will pour out the rest at its base. 35 And removing also all the fat, as the fat of the ram is accustomed to be removed which is immolated for the peace-offerings, he will burn it upon the altar as an incense to the Lord: and he will intercede for him, and for his sin, and it will be forgiven him. 5 1 If a soul shall have sinned, and shall have heard the voice of one swearing, and has been a witness, either of what he himself saw, or is conscious of: unless he makes it known, he shall bear his iniquity. 2 A soul that touches anything unclean, whether what has been killed by a beast, or has died of itself, or any other creeping thing; and has forgotten his uncleanness, he is guilty, and has offended: 3 and if he touches anything of the uncleanness of man according to every impurity by which one is wont to be defiled, and, having forgotten, afterward has recognized it, he will be subject to the offense.
4 Anima, quæ juraverit, et protulerit labiis suis, ut vel male quid faceret, vel bene, et idipsum juramento et sermone firmaverit, oblitaque postea intellexerit delictum suum, 5 agat pœnitentiam pro peccato, 6 et offerat de gregibus agnam sive capram, orabitque pro ea sacerdos et pro peccato ejus. 7 Sin autem non potuerit offerre pecus, offerat duos turtures, vel duos pullos columbarum Domino, unum pro peccato, et alterum in holocaustum, 8 dabitque eos sacerdoti: qui primum offerens pro peccato, retorquebit caput ejus ad pennulas, ita ut collo hæreat, et non penitus abrumpatur. 9 Et asperget de sanguine ejus parietem altaris; quidquid autem reliquum fuerit, faciet distillare ad fundamentum ejus, quia pro peccato est.
4 A soul which shall have sworn, and brought forth with her lips, that she would do either something ill or good, and has confirmed that very thing by oath and by word, and, having forgotten, afterwards has understood her offense, 5 let her do penance for the sin, 6 and let her offer from the flocks a ewe-lamb or a she-goat; and the priest shall pray for her and for her sin. 7 But if she is not able to offer a head of livestock, let her offer two turtledoves, or two young of doves to the Lord, one for sin, and the other for a holocaust, 8 and she shall give them to the priest, who, offering the first for sin, shall twist its head toward the wing-feathers, in such a way that it adheres to the neck, and is not entirely torn off. 9 And he shall sprinkle of its blood the wall of the altar; but whatever shall have remained, he shall make to trickle to its foundation, because it is for sin.
10 But the other he shall cause to go up in holocaust, as is customary: and the priest will intercede for him and for his sin, and it will be remitted to him. 11 But if his hand cannot manage to offer two turtledoves or two young pigeons, he shall offer for his sin a tenth of an ephah of fine flour: he shall not put oil upon it, nor place any frankincense upon it, because it is for sin. 12 And he shall hand it over to the priest, who, drawing from it a full handful, will burn it upon the altar as a memorial of him who has offered it, 13 praying for him and expiating: but the remainder he himself shall have as a gift.

14 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 15 If a soul, transgressing the ceremonies, by error in those things which are sanctified to the Lord, shall have sinned, he shall offer for his trespass an unblemished ram from the flocks, which can be bought for two shekels, according to the weight of the sanctuary: 16 and he shall restore the very loss that he has inflicted, and shall add a fifth part upon it, delivering it to the priest, who, offering the ram, will pray for him, and it shall be remitted to him. 17 If a soul has sinned through ignorance, and has done one of those things which are prohibited by the law of the Lord, and, guilty of sin, has understood his iniquity, 18 he shall offer an unblemished ram from the flocks to the priest, according to the measure and estimation of the sin: who will pray for him, because he did it unknowingly: and it shall be remitted to him, 19 because by error he has trespassed against the Lord. 6 1 The Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 2 A soul which has sinned, and, the Lord being contemned, has denied to his neighbor a deposit which had been entrusted to his faith, or has by force extorted anything, or has committed calumny, 3 or has found a lost thing, and, denying it, has moreover perjured himself, and has done any other of the many things in which men are wont to sin, 4 being convicted of the offense, 5 he shall restore all the things which by fraud he wished to obtain, entire, and, in addition, a fifth part, to the owner to whom he had inflicted damage. 6 But for his sin he shall offer an unblemished ram from the flock, and he shall give it to the priest, according to the estimation and measure of the offense: 7 who will pray for him before the Lord, and it shall be remitted to him for each of the things which by doing he has sinned.
8 Locutusque est Dominus ad Moysen, dicens: 9 Præcipe Aaron et filiis ejus: Hæc est lex holocausti: cremabitur in altari tota nocte usque mane: ignis ex eodem altari erit. 10 Vestietur tunica sacerdos et feminalibus lineis: tolletque cineres, quos vorans ignis exussit, et ponens juxta altare, 11 spoliabitur prioribus vestimentis, indutusque aliis, efferret eos extra castra, et in loco mundissimo usque ad favillam consumi faciet. 12 Ignis autem in altari semper ardebit, quem nutriet sacerdos subjiciens ligna mane per singulos dies, et imposito holocausto, desuper adolebit adipes pacificorum.
8 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 9 Command Aaron and his sons: This is the law of the holocaust: it shall be burned on the altar the whole night until morning; the fire shall be from the same altar. 10 The priest shall be clothed with a tunic and linen breeches; and he shall take up the ashes which the devouring fire has burned, and, placing them beside the altar, 11 he shall strip off his former garments, and, clothed with others, shall carry them outside the camp, and in a most clean place he shall cause them to be consumed down to fine ash. 12 But the fire on the altar shall always burn, which the priest shall nourish by laying on wood in the morning day by day; and, the holocaust being placed thereon, he shall burn upon it the fat-pieces of the peace-offerings.
13 This is a perpetual fire, which will never fail on the altar. 14 This is the law of the sacrifice and of the libations, which the sons of Aaron shall offer before the Lord, and before the altar. 15 The priest shall take a handful of fine flour, which is sprinkled with oil, and all the incense which is set upon the fine flour; and he shall burn it upon the altar as a memorial of a most sweet odor to the Lord; 16 but Aaron with his sons shall eat the remainder of the fine flour, without leaven; and he shall eat it in a holy place of the court of the tabernacle.
Legitimate and sempiternal it shall be in your generations concerning the sacrifices of the Lord: everyone who touches them shall be sanctified. 19 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 20 This is the oblation of Aaron and his sons, which they ought to offer to the Lord on the day of his unction. A tenth part of an ephah of fine flour they shall offer as a sempiternal sacrifice, half of it in the morning, and half of it in the evening: 21 which shall be fried in a frying-pan, sprinkled with oil. And he shall offer it hot, into a most suave odor to the Lord 22 the priest who by right shall have succeeded his father, and it shall be wholly burned on the altar.
24 Locutus est autem Dominus ad Moysen, dicens: 25 Loquere Aaron et filiis ejus: Ista est lex hostiæ pro peccato: in loco ubi offertur holocaustum, immolabitur coram Domino. Sanctum sanctorum est. 26 Sacerdos, qui offert, comedet eam in loco sancto, in atrio tabernaculi.
24 But the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 25 Speak to Aaron and his sons: This is the law of the sin-offering: in the place where the holocaust is offered, it shall be immolated before the Lord. It is the Holy of Holies. 26 The priest who offers shall eat it in a holy place, in the court of the tabernacle.
29 Every male of the priestly lineage shall eat of its flesh, because it is a Holy of holies. 30 For the victim which is slain for sin, whose blood is brought into the tabernacle of testimony to make expiation in the sanctuary, shall not be eaten, but shall be burned with fire. 7 1 This also is the law of the offering for trespass: it is a Holy of holies: 2 therefore, in the place where the holocaust is immolated, the victim for trespass shall also be slain: its blood shall be poured round about the altar.
3 They shall offer from it the tail and the fat that covers the vital organs: 4 the two kidneys, and the fat which is beside the loins, and the network (caul) of the liver with the kidneys. 5 And the priest shall burn these upon the altar: it is an incense of the Lord for the guilt-offering. 6 Every male of the sacerdotal lineage shall eat of these meats in a holy place, because it is the Holy of holies.
7 Just as a victim is offered for sin, so also for delict: the law of each victim shall be one and the same: it shall pertain to the priest who has offered it. 8 The priest who offers the victim of the holocaust shall have its skin. 9 And every sacrifice of fine flour that is baked in an oven, and whatever is prepared on a griddle or in a frying-pan, shall belong to the priest by whom it is offered: 10 whether they have been mixed with oil or are dry, among all the sons of Aaron it shall be divided with an equal measure, one by one.
11 Hæc est lex hostiæ pacificorum quæ offertur Domino. 12 Si pro gratiarum actione oblatio fuerit, offerent panes absque fermento conspersos oleo, et lagana azyma uncta oleo, coctamque similam, et collyridas olei admistione conspersas: 13 panes quoque fermentatos cum hostia gratiarum, quæ immolatur pro pacificis: 14 ex quibus unus pro primitiis offeretur Domino, et erit sacerdotis qui fundet hostiæ sanguinem, 15 cujus carnes eadem comedentur die, nec remanebit ex eis quidquam usque mane. 16 Si voto, vel sponte quispiam obtulerit hostiam, eadem similiter edetur die: sed et si quid in crastinum remanserit, vesci licitum est: 17 quidquid autem tertius invenerit dies, ignis absumet.
11 This is the law of the sacrifice of peace-offerings which is offered to the Lord. 12 If the oblation be for thanksgiving, they shall offer loaves without leaven mingled with oil, and unleavened wafers anointed with oil, and fine flour baked, and little cakes sprinkled with an admixture of oil: 13 also leavened loaves with the sacrifice of thanksgiving, which is immolated for the peace-offerings: 14 of which one shall be offered to the Lord for first-fruits, and it shall be the priest’s who pours out the blood of the sacrifice, 15 whose flesh shall be eaten the same day, nor shall anything of it remain until morning. 16 If someone shall have offered a sacrifice by vow, or voluntarily, the same shall likewise be eaten on that day: but also if anything shall have remained until the morrow, it is permitted to be eaten: 17 but whatever the third day shall find, the fire shall consume.
18 If anyone eats of the flesh of the victim of the peace-offerings on the third day, the oblation shall be void, nor shall it benefit the offerer; rather, whatever soul shall have contaminated itself with such a food shall be guilty of transgression. 19 Flesh which touches anything unclean shall not be eaten, but shall be burned with fire; whoever is clean shall eat of it. 20 A soul that is polluted, which eats of the flesh of the sacrifice of the peace-offerings which is offered to the Lord, shall perish from his people. 21 And whoever touches the uncleanness of a human, or of a beast, or of any thing that can pollute, and eats of flesh of this kind, shall perish from his people.
22 Locutusque est Dominus ad Moysen, dicens: 23 Loquere filiis Israël: Adipem ovis, et bovis, et capræ non comedetis. 24 Adipem cadaveris morticini, et ejus animalis, quod a bestia captum est, habebitis in varios usus. 25 Si quis adipem, qui offerri debet in incensum Domini, comederit, peribit de populo suo.
22 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 23 Speak to the sons of Israel: The fat of the sheep, and the ox, and the goat you shall not eat. 24 The fat of a carcass that died of itself, and of an animal which has been taken by a beast, you shall have for various uses. 25 If anyone eats fat which ought to be offered in burning to the Lord, he shall perish from his people.
28 Locutusque est Dominus ad Moysen, dicens: 29 Loquere filiis Israël, dicens: Qui offert victimam pacificorum Domino, offerat simul et sacrificium, id est, libamenta ejus. 30 Tenebit manibus adipem hostiæ, et pectusculum: cumque ambo oblata Domino consecraverit, tradet sacerdoti, 31 qui adolebit adipem super altare, pectusculum autem erit Aaron et filiorum ejus. 32 Armus quoque dexter de pacificorum hostiis cedet in primitias sacerdotis.
28 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 29 Speak to the sons of Israël, saying: Whoever offers the victim of peace-offerings to the Lord, let him offer at the same time also the sacrifice, that is, its libations. 30 He shall hold in his hands the fat of the victim and the breast; and when he has consecrated both, offered to the Lord, he shall hand them to the priest, 31 who will burn the fat upon the altar, but the breast shall be Aaron’s and his sons’. 32 The right shoulder also, from the victims of peace-offerings, shall go as first-fruits to the priest.
33 Whoever, of the sons of Aaron, offers the blood and the fat, he himself shall also have the right arm in his portion. 34 For the little breast of elevation and the arm of separation I have taken from the sons of Israel out of their peace-offerings, and I have given them to Aaron the priest and to his sons, by a perpetual law, from the whole people of Israel. 35 This is the unction of Aaron and of his sons in the ceremonies of the Lord on the day on which Moses presented them, that they might discharge the priesthood, 36 and what the Lord commanded to be given to them by the sons of Israel by perpetual religion in their generations. 37 This is the law of the holocaust, and of the sacrifice for sin and for offense, and for consecration and for the peace-offerings of victims, 38 which the Lord established for Moses on Mount Sinai, when he commanded the sons of Israel to offer their oblations to the Lord in the desert of Sinai.
8 1 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 2 Take Aaron with his sons, their vestments, and the oil of unction, a bull-calf for the sin offering, two rams, a basket with unleavened cakes: 3 and you shall gather the whole congregation at the door of the tabernacle. 4 Moses did as the Lord had commanded. And the whole crowd having been gathered before the doors of the tabernacle, 5 he said: This is the word which the Lord has commanded to be done.
6 And immediately he presented Aaron and his sons. And when he had washed them, 7 he clothed the pontiff with a linen under-tunic, girding him with a belt, and clothing him with a hyacinthine tunic, and over it he placed the humeral, 8 which, tightening with a cincture, he fitted to the rational, in which were Doctrine and Truth. 9 He also covered the head with the cidaris; and over it, opposite the forehead, he placed a golden plate consecrated in sanctification, as the Lord had commanded him.
10 He also took the oil of unction, with which he anointed the tabernacle with all its furnishings. 11 And when, in sanctifying, he had sprinkled the altar seven times, he anointed it, and all its vessels, and the laver with its base he sanctified with oil. 12 Pouring it upon the head of Aaron, he anointed him and consecrated him: 13 and his sons also, when they had been presented, he clothed with linen tunics, and girded with belts, and placed miters upon them, as the Lord had commanded.
14 Obtulit et vitulum pro peccato: cumque super caput ejus posuisset Aaron et filii ejus manus suas, 15 immolavit eum, hauriens sanguinem, et tincto digito, tetigit cornua altaris per gyrum: quo expiato et sanctificato, fudit reliquum sanguinem ad fundamenta ejus. 16 Adipem vero qui erat super vitalia, et reticulum jecoris, duosque renunculos, cum arvinulis suis, adolevit super altare: 17 vitulum cum pelle, et carnibus, et fimo, cremans extra castra, sicut præceperat Dominus. 18 Obtulit et arietem in holocaustum: super cujus caput cum imposuissent Aaron et filii ejus manus suas, 19 immolavit eum, et fudit sanguinem ejus per circuitum altaris.
14 He also offered the calf for sin: and when Aaron and his sons had put their hands upon its head, 15 he immolated it, drawing the blood, and, with his finger dipped, he touched the horns of the altar all around: and when it had been expiated and sanctified, he poured the remaining blood at its foundations. 16 But the fat which was upon the vitals, and the reticulum of the liver, and the two little kidneys, with their suets, he burned upon the altar: 17 the calf, with the hide, and the flesh, and the dung, he burning outside the camp, just as the Lord had commanded. 18 He also offered a ram for a holocaust: upon whose head, when Aaron and his sons had laid their hands, 19 he immolated it, and poured out its blood around the circuit of the altar.
20 And cutting the ram itself into pieces, he burned with fire its head, and the limbs, and the fat, 21 after first washing the entrails and the feet: and he burned the whole ram together upon the altar, because it was a holocaust of most sweet odor to the Lord, as He had commanded him. 22 He also offered the second ram in the consecration of the priests, and Aaron and his sons laid their hands upon its head: 23 and when Moses had immolated it, taking some of its blood, he touched the tip of Aaron’s right ear, and the thumb of his right hand, and likewise of his foot. 24 He also presented the sons of Aaron: and when, with the blood of the immolated ram, he had touched the tip of each one’s right ear, and the thumbs of the right hand and of the right foot, he poured the rest upon the altar round about: 25 but the fat, and the tail, and all the fat which covers the entrails, and the caul of the liver, and the two kidneys with their fat, and the right shoulder he set apart.
26 Tollens autem de canistro azymorum, quod erat coram Domino, panem absque fermento, et collyridam conspersam oleo, laganumque, posuit super adipes, et armum dextrum, 27 tradens simul omnia Aaron et filiis ejus. 26 Taking also from the canister of the unleaveneds, which was before the Lord, bread without leaven, and a collyris sprinkled with oil, and a laganum, he placed them upon the fats and the right shoulder, 27 handing all together to Aaron and his sons. Who, after they had lifted them up before the Lord, 28 again, having received them from their hands, he burned them upon the altar of the holocaust, because it was an oblation of consecration, for an odor of sweetness, a sacrifice to the Lord. 29 And he took the breast-piece, lifting it before the Lord, from the ram of consecration for his portion, as the Lord had commanded him.
30 Assumensque unguentum, et sanguinem qui erat in altari, aspersit super Aaron et vestimenta ejus, et super filios illius ac vestes eorum. 31 Cumque sanctificasset eos in vestitu suo, præcepit eis, dicens: Coquite carnes ante fores tabernaculi, et ibi comedite eas; panes quoque consecrationis edite, qui positi sunt in canistro, sicut præcepit mihi Dominus, dicens: Aaron et filii ejus comedent eos: 32 quidquid autem reliquum fuerit de carne et panibus, ignis absumet. 33 De ostio quoque tabernaculi non exibitis septem diebus, usque ad diem quo complebitur tempus consecrationis vestræ; septem enim diebus finitur consecratio: 34 sicut et impræsentiarum factum est, ut ritus sacrificii compleretur.
30 And taking the unguent and the blood that was on the altar, he sprinkled it upon Aaron and his vestments, and upon his sons and their garments. 31 And when he had sanctified them in their vesture, he commanded them, saying: Cook the meats before the doors of the tabernacle, and there eat them; also eat the breads of consecration, which are set in the basket, as the Lord commanded me, saying: Aaron and his sons shall eat them: 32 but whatever shall be left of the flesh and the breads, the fire shall consume. 33 From the doorway also of the tabernacle you shall not go out for seven days, until the day on which the time of your consecration shall be completed; for in seven days the consecration is finished: 34 just as at present it has been done, that the rite of the sacrifice might be completed.
35 Day and night you shall remain in the tabernacle, observing the watches of the Lord, lest you die: for thus it has been commanded to me. 36 And Aaron and his sons did all that the Lord had spoken by the hand of Moses. 9 1 Now on the eighth day, Moses called Aaron, and his sons, and the elders of Israel, and he said to Aaron: 2 Take from the herd a calf for a sin-offering, and a ram for a holocaust, both without blemish, and offer them before the Lord.
3 And you shall speak to the sons of Israel: Take a he-goat for sin, and a calf, and a lamb, yearlings, and without blemish for a holocaust, 4 an ox and a ram for peace-offerings: and immolate them before the Lord, offering in the sacrifice of each fine flour sprinkled with oil: for today the Lord will appear to you. 5 They therefore brought all the things which Moses had ordered to the door of the tabernacle: where, as all the multitude was standing by, 6 Moses said: This is the word which the Lord has commanded: do it, and his glory will appear to you. 7 And he said to Aaron: Approach the altar, and immolate for your sin: offer the holocaust, and intercede for yourself and for the people: and when you have slaughtered the people’s victim, pray on its behalf, as the Lord has commanded.
8 Statimque Aaron accedens ad altare, immolavit vitulum pro peccato suo: 9 cujus sanguinem obtulerunt ei filii sui: in quo tingens digitum, tetigit cornua altaris, et fudit residuum ad basim ejus. 10 Adipemque, et renunculos, ac reticulum jecoris, quæ sunt pro peccato, adolevit super altare, sicut præceperat Dominus Moysi: 11 carnes vero et pellem ejus extra castra combussit igni. 12 Immolavit et holocausti victimam: obtuleruntque ei filii sui sanguinem ejus, quem fudit per altaris circuitum.
8 And straightway Aaron, approaching the altar, immolated the calf for his sin: 9 whose blood his sons presented to him: and dipping his finger in it, he touched the horns of the altar, and poured the remainder at its base. 10 And the fat, and the kidneys, and the reticulum (caul) of the liver, which are for the sin-offering, he burned upon the altar, as the Lord had prescribed to Moses: 11 but the flesh and its skin he burned with fire outside the camp. 12 He also immolated the victim of the holocaust: and his sons presented to him its blood, which he poured around the circuit of the altar.
15 Et pro peccato populi offerens, mactavit hircum: expiatoque altari, 16 fecit holocaustum, 17 addens in sacrificio libamenta, quæ pariter offeruntur, et adolens ea super altare, absque cæremoniis holocausti matutini. 18 Immolavit et bovem atque arietem, hostias pacificas populi: obtuleruntque ei filii sui sanguinem, quem fudit super altare in circuitum. 19 Adipem autem bovis, et caudam arietis, renunculosque cum adipibus suis, et reticulum jecoris, 20 posuerunt super pectora: cumque cremati essent adipes super altare, 21 pectora eorum, et armos dextros separavit Aaron, elevans coram Domino, sicut præceperat Moyses.
15 And, offering for the sin of the people, he slew a he-goat: and the altar having been expiated, 16 he made a holocaust, 17 adding in the sacrifice libations, which are offered together, and burning them upon the altar, apart from the ceremonies of the matutinal holocaust. 18 He immolated also a bull and a ram, the peace-offerings of the people: and his sons offered to him the blood, which he poured upon the altar all around. 19 But the fat of the ox, and the tail of the ram, and the kidneys with their fats, and the reticulum of the liver, 20 they placed upon the breasts: and when the fats had been burned upon the altar, 21 their breasts and the right shoulders Aaron separated, lifting up before the Lord, as Moses had commanded.
22 Et extendens manus ad populum, benedixit ei. Sicque completis hostiis pro peccato, et holocaustis, et pacificis, descendit. 23 Ingressi autem Moyses et Aaron in tabernaculum testimonii, et deinceps egressi, benedixerunt populo. Apparuitque gloria Domini omni multitudini: 24 et ecce egressus ignis a Domino, devoravit holocaustum, et adipes qui erant super altare.
22 And stretching out his hands to the people, he blessed them. And thus, the victims for sin, and the holocausts, and the peace-offerings having been completed, he descended. 23 Then Moses and Aaron, having entered into the Tabernacle of Testimony, and thereafter having gone out, blessed the people. And the glory of the Lord appeared to the whole multitude: 24 and behold, fire went out from the Lord, and devoured the holocaust, and the fats which were upon the altar.
Which when the crowds had seen, they lauded the Lord, rushing onto their faces. 10 1 And Nadab and Abihu, sons of Aaron, having seized their thuribles, put fire in them, and incense above, offering before the Lord alien fire: which had not been commanded to them. 2 And fire went out from the Lord, devoured them, and they died before the Lord.
3 And Moses said to Aaron: This is what the Lord has spoken: I will be sanctified in those who draw near to me, and in the sight of all the people I will be glorified. Hearing this, Aaron kept silent. 4 Then Moses called Mishael and Elzaphan, sons of Uzziel, Aaron’s uncle, and said to them: Go, and take up your brothers from before the sanctuary, and carry them outside the camp.
5 And going immediately, they carried them as they were lying, clothed in linen tunics, and cast them outside, as it had been commanded to them. 6 And Moses spoke to Aaron, and to Eleazar and Ithamar, his sons: Do not bare your heads, and do not rend your garments, lest perhaps you die, and indignation arise upon all the congregation. Your brothers, and all the house of Israel, shall lament the conflagration which the Lord has kindled: 7 but you shall not go out from the doors of the tabernacle, otherwise you will perish: for indeed the oil of the holy unction is upon you.
Who did all things according to the precept of Moses. 8 And the Lord also said to Aaron: 9 Wine, and anything that can inebriate, you and your sons shall not drink, when you enter into the tabernacle of testimony, lest you die: because it is a perpetual precept for your generations: 10 and so that you may have the knowledge of discerning between the holy and the profane, between the polluted and the clean; 11 and that you may teach the sons of Israel all my statutes which the Lord has spoken to them by the hand of Moses.
12 Locutusque est Moyses ad Aaron, et ad Eleazar, et Ithamar, filios ejus, qui erant residui: Tollite sacrificium, quod remansit de oblatione Domini, et comedite illud absque fermento juxta altare, quia Sanctum sanctorum est. 13 Comedetis autem in loco sancto: quod datum est tibi et filiis tuis de oblationibus Domini, sicut præceptum est mihi. 14 Pectusculum quoque quod oblatum est, et armum qui separatus est, edetis in loco mundissimo tu et filii tui, et filiæ tuæ tecum: tibi enim ac liberis tuis reposita sunt de hostiis salutaribus filiorum Israël: 15 eo quod armum et pectus, et adipes qui cremantur in altari, elevaverunt coram Domino, et pertineant ad te, et ad filios tuos, lege perpetua, sicut præcepit Dominus.
12 And Moses spoke to Aaron, and to Eleazar and Ithamar, his sons, who were the survivors: Take the sacrifice which has remained from the oblation of the Lord, and eat it without leaven beside the altar, because it is the Holy of holies. 13 You shall eat it, moreover, in a holy place: that which has been given to you and to your sons from the oblations of the Lord, as it has been prescribed to me. 14 The breast-piece also which has been offered, and the shoulder which has been separated, you shall eat in a most clean place, you and your sons, and your daughters with you: for they have been laid up for you and for your children from the peace-offerings of the sons of Israel: 15 inasmuch as the shoulder and the breast, and the fat-pieces which are burned upon the altar, they have elevated before the Lord, and they belong to you and to your sons, by a perpetual law, as the Lord has prescribed.
16 Meanwhile, the he-goat which had been offered for sin, when Moses sought it, he found burned up; and angry against Eleazar and Ithamar, the sons of Aaron who had remained, he said: 17 Why have you not eaten the victim for sin in the holy place, which is the Holy of holies, and was given to you that you might bear the iniquity of the multitude and make intercession for it in the sight of the Lord, 18 especially since none of its blood has been brought within the holy places, and you ought to have eaten it in the Sanctuary, as it has been commanded to me ? 19 Aaron replied: Today the victim for sin has been offered, and the holocaust before the Lord; but what you see has happened to me; how could I have eaten it, or been pleasing to the Lord in ceremonies with a lugubrious mind ? 20 When Moses heard this, he accepted the satisfaction. 11 1 And the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying: 2 Speak to the sons of Israel: These are the animals which you must eat of all the living creatures of the earth: 3 whatever has a divided hoof, and ruminates among the cattle, you shall eat. 4 But whatever indeed ruminates and has a hoof, but does not divide it, like the camel and the rest, you shall not eat it, and you shall reckon it among the unclean.
9 Hæc sunt quæ gignuntur in aquis, et vesci licitum est: omne quod habet pinnulas et squamas, tam in mari quam in fluminibus et stagnis, comedetis. 10 Quidquid autem pinnulas et squamas non habet, eorum quæ in aquis moventur et vivunt, abominabile vobis, 11 execrandumque erit: carnes eorum non comedetis, et morticina vitabitis. 12 Cuncta quæ non habent pinnulas et squamas in aquis, polluta erunt.
9 These are the things that are generated in the waters, and it is permitted to eat: whatever has fins and scales, both in the sea and in rivers and pools, you shall eat. 10 But whatever does not have fins and scales, of those which move and live in the waters, shall be abominable to you, 11 and execrable: you shall not eat their flesh, and you shall avoid the carcasses. 12 All things which do not have fins and scales in the waters shall be polluted.
13 Hæc sunt quæ de avibus comedere non debetis, et vitanda sunt vobis: aquilam, et gryphem, et haliæetum, 14 et milvum ac vulturem juxta genus suum, 15 et omne corvini generis in similitudinem suam, 16 struthionem, et noctuam, et larum, et accipitrem juxta genus suum: 17 bubonem, et mergulum, et ibin, 18 et cygnum, et onocrotalum, et porphyrionem, 19 herodionem, et charadrion juxta genus suum, upupam quoque, et vespertilionem.
13 These are the birds which you must not eat, and which are to be avoided by you: the eagle, and the gryphon vulture, and the sea-eagle, 14 and the kite and the vulture, according to its kind, 15 and every species of the corvine kind in its likeness, 16 the ostrich, and the owl, and the gull, and the hawk, according to its kind: 17 the eagle-owl, and the cormorant, and the ibis, 18 and the swan, and the pelican, and the porphyrion (purple gallinule), 19 the heron, and the plover (Charadrius) according to its kind, the hoopoe also, and the bat.
20 Omne de volucribus quod graditur super quatuor pedes, abominabile erit vobis. 21 Quidquid autem ambulat quidem super quatuor pedes, sed habet longiora retro crura, per quæ salit super terram, 22 comedere debetis, ut est bruchus in genere suo, et attacus atque ophiomachus, ac locusta, singula juxta genus suum. 23 Quidquid autem ex volucribus quatuor tantum habet pedes, execrabile erit vobis: 24 et quicumque morticina eorum tetigerit, polluetur, et erit immundus usque ad vesperum: 25 et si necesse fuerit ut portet quippiam horum mortuum, lavabit vestimenta sua, et immundus erit usque ad occasum solis.
20 Every of the winged creatures that walks on four feet will be abominable to you. 21 But whatever indeed walks upon four feet, but has longer hind legs, by which it leaps upon the earth, 22 you shall eat: as is the bruchus in its kind, and the attacus and the ophiomachus, and the locust, each according to its kind. 23 But whatever of the winged creatures has only four feet will be execrable to you: 24 and whoever touches their carcasses shall be defiled, and shall be unclean until evening: 25 and if it be necessary that he carry any of these dead, he shall wash his garments, and shall be unclean until the going down of the sun.
26 Every animal that indeed has a hoof, but does not divide it, nor chews the cud, shall be unclean; and whoever touches it will be contaminated. 27 Whatever walks upon its paws, from all the living creatures that go on all fours, shall be unclean: whoever touches their carcasses will be polluted until evening. 28 And whoever carries suchlike carcasses shall wash his garments, and shall be unclean until evening: because all these are unclean for you.
31 Omnia hæc immunda sunt. Qui tetigerit morticina eorum, immundus erit usque ad vesperum: 32 et super quod ceciderit quidquam de morticinis eorum, polluetur, tam vas ligneum et vestimentum, quam pelles et cilicia: et in quocumque fit opus, tingentur aqua, et polluta erunt usque ad vesperum, et sic postea mundabuntur. 33 Vas autem fictile, in quod horum quidquam intro cecidit, polluetur, et idcirco frangendum est.
31 All these are unclean. Whoever touches their carcasses will be unclean until evening: 32 and upon whatever anything of their carcasses has fallen, it will be defiled, both a wooden vessel and a garment, as well as skins and cilicia: and whatever is used for work shall be dipped in water, and they will be defiled until evening, and thus afterward they will be cleansed. 33 But an earthen vessel, into which any of these has fallen, will be defiled, and therefore it must be broken.
34 Every food that you eat, if water has been poured over it, shall be unclean: and every liquid that is drunk from any vessel shall be unclean. 35 And whatever of such carcasses shall have fallen upon it shall be unclean: whether ovens or kettle-pots, they shall be destroyed, and they shall be unclean. 36 But springs and cisterns, and every gathering of waters, shall be clean.
39 If an animal which it is lawful for you to eat has died, whoever touches its corpse shall be unclean until evening: 40 and whoever eats anything of it, or has carried it, shall wash his garments, and shall be unclean until evening. 41 Everything that creeps upon the earth shall be abominable, nor shall it be taken for food. 42 Whatever as a quadruped walks upon the breast, and has many feet, or is dragged along the ground, you shall not eat, because it is abominable.
45 For I am the Lord, who led you out of the land of Egypt, to be your God. You shall be holy, because I am holy. 46 This is the law of living creatures and of birds, and of every living soul that moves in the water and creeps on the earth, 47 so that you may know the differences of the clean and the unclean, and may know what you ought to eat and what you ought to reject.
12 1 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 2 Speak to the sons of Israel, and you shall say to them: A woman, if having conceived seed she bears a male, she shall be unclean for seven days according to the days of menstrual separation. 3 And on the eighth day the little boy shall be circumcised: 4 but she herself shall remain thirty-three days in the blood of her purification. She shall not touch anything holy, nor shall she enter into the sanctuary, until the days of her purification are fulfilled. 5 But if she bears a female, she shall be unclean for two weeks according to the rite of the menstrual flux, and for sixty-six days she shall remain in the blood of her purification. 6 And when the days of her purification are completed, for a son or for a daughter, she shall bring a yearling lamb for a holocaust, and a young pigeon or a turtledove for sin, to the entrance of the tabernacle of the testimony, and she shall hand it to the priest, 7 who will offer those things before the Lord, and will pray for her, and thus she shall be cleansed from the outflow of her blood: this is the law of her who bears a male or a female. 8 But if her hand does not find it, and she cannot offer a lamb, she shall take two turtledoves or two young pigeons, one for a holocaust, and the other for a sin-offering: and the priest shall pray for her, and thus she shall be cleansed. 13 1 And the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying: 2 A man, in whose skin and flesh there has arisen a differing color, or a pustule, or as it were something shining, that is, a plague of leprosy, shall be brought to Aaron the priest, or to any one of his sons.
4 Sin autem lucens candor fuerit in cute, nec humilior carne reliqua, et pili coloris pristini, recludet eum sacerdos septem diebus: 5 et considerabit die septimo: et si quidem lepra ultra non creverit, nec transierit in cute priores terminos, rursum recludet eum septem diebus aliis. 6 Et die septimo contemplabitur: si obscurior fuerit lepra, et non creverit in cute, mundabit eum, quia scabies est: lavabitque homo vestimenta sua, et mundus erit. 7 Quod si postquam a sacerdote visus est, et redditus munditiæ, iterum lepra creverit: adducetur ad eum, 8 et immunditiæ condemnabitur.
4 But if, however, a shining whiteness should be in the skin, and not lower than the remaining flesh, and the hairs are of their pristine color, the priest shall confine him for seven days: 5 and he shall examine on the seventh day: and if indeed the leprosy has not grown further, nor passed in the skin the former bounds, he shall confine him again for seven other days. 6 And on the seventh day he shall contemplate: if the leprosy is darker, and has not grown in the skin, he shall make him clean, because it is a scab: and the man shall wash his garments, and he shall be clean. 7 But if, after he has been seen by the priest and restored to cleanness, the leprosy has grown again: he shall be brought to him, 8 and he shall be condemned to uncleanness.
9 Plaga lepræ si fuerit in homine, adducetur ad sacerdotem, 10 et videbit eum. Cumque color albus in cute fuerit, et capillorum mutaverit aspectum, ipsa quoque caro viva apparuerit: 11 lepra vetustissima judicabitur, atque inolita cuti. Contaminabit itaque eum sacerdos, et non recludet, quia perspicuæ immunditiæ est.
9 If the plague of leprosy is in a man, he shall be brought to the priest, 10 and he shall look upon him. And when a white color is in the skin, and the hair has changed its aspect, and even living flesh has appeared, 11 it will be judged a most ancient leprosy, and ingrained in the skin. Therefore the priest will pronounce him contaminated (unclean), and he will not shut him up, because it is of manifest uncleanness.
12 But if the leprosy, blossoming and running, has spread in the skin, and has covered the whole skin from head to feet, whatever falls under the sight of the eyes, 13 the priest shall consider him, and he shall judge that he is held by a most clean leprosy: because all has turned into whiteness, and therefore the man shall be clean. 14 But when living flesh appears in him, 15 then by the judgment of the priest he shall be defiled, and shall be reckoned among the unclean: for living flesh, if leprosy is sprinkled upon it, is unclean. 16 But if again it has been turned into whiteness, and has covered the whole man, 17 the priest shall consider him, and shall decree that he is clean.
18 Caro autem et cutis in qua ulcus natum est, et sanatum, 19 et in loco ulceris cicatrix alba apparuerit, sive subrufa, adducetur homo ad sacerdotem. 20 Qui cum viderit locum lepræ humiliorem carne reliqua, et pilos versos in candorem, contaminabit eum: plaga enim lepræ orta est in ulcere. 21 Quod si pilus coloris est pristini, et cicatrix subobscura, et vicina carne non est humilior, recludet eum septem diebus: 22 et si quidem creverit, adjudicabit eum lepræ; 23 sin autem steterit in loco suo, ulceris est cicatrix, et homo mundus erit.
18 But the flesh and skin in which an ulcer has arisen and has been healed, 19 and in the place of the ulcer a white scar has appeared, or somewhat rufous, the man shall be brought to the priest. 20 And when he sees the place of the leprosy lower than the remaining flesh, and the hairs turned to whiteness, he will pronounce him contaminated: for a plague of leprosy has arisen in the ulcer. 21 But if the hair is of its pristine color, and the scar is somewhat obscure, and it is not lower than the neighboring flesh, he will shut him up for seven days: 22 and if indeed it has grown, he will adjudge him to leprosy; 23 but if it has stood in its own place, it is a scar of the ulcer, and the man will be clean.
24 Caro autem et cutis, quam ignis exusserit, et sanata albam sive rufam habuerit cicatricem, 25 considerabit eam sacerdos: et ecce versa est in alborem, et locus ejus reliqua cute est humilior, contaminabit eum, quia plaga lepræ in cicatrice orta est. 26 Quod si pilorum color non fuerit immutatus, nec humilior plaga carne reliqua, et ipsa lepræ species fuerit subobscura, recludet eum septem diebus, 27 et die septimo contemplabitur: si creverit in cute lepra, contaminabit eum. 28 Sin autem in loco suo candor steterit non satis clarus, plaga combustionis est, et idcirco mundabitur, quia cicatrix est combusturæ.
24 But the flesh and skin that fire has scorched, and when healed has had a white or reddish cicatrix, 25 the priest will examine it: and behold, if it has turned into whiteness, and its place is lower than the rest of the skin, he will contaminate him, because the plague of leprosy has arisen in the cicatrix. 26 But if the color of the hairs has not been changed, nor the plague lower than the rest of the flesh, and the very appearance of leprosy is somewhat obscure, he will shut him up for seven days, 27 and on the seventh day he will look: if the leprosy has grown in the skin, he will contaminate him. 28 But if the whiteness has stood in its place not sufficiently bright, it is a plague of burning, and therefore he will be cleansed, because it is a cicatrix of combustion.
29 Vir, sive mulier, in cujus capite vel barba germinaverit lepra, videbit eos sacerdos. 30 Et si quidem humilior fuerit locus carne reliqua, et capillus flavus, solitoque subtilior, contaminabit eos, quia lepra capitis ac barbæ est. 31 Sin autem viderit locum maculæ æqualem vicinæ carni, et capillum nigrum: recludet eum septem diebus, 32 et die septimo intuebitur.
29 A man, or a woman, in whose head or beard leprosy has germinated, the priest will see them. 30 And if indeed the place is lower than the rest of the flesh, and the hair is yellow and thinner than usual, he will contaminate them, because it is leprosy of the head and of the beard. 31 But if he sees the place of the spot equal to the neighboring flesh, and the hair black, he will shut him up for seven days, 32 and on the seventh day he will look upon him.
If the spot has not grown, and the hair is of its own color, and the place of the plague is level with the rest of the flesh: 33 the man shall be shaved apart from the place of the spot, and he shall be shut in for seven other days. 34 If on the seventh day the plague is seen to have stood in its place, and is not lower than the rest of the flesh, he shall declare him clean: and, his garments having been washed, he shall be clean. 35 But if after his cleansing the spot has grown again in the skin, 36 he shall no longer inquire whether the hair has been changed into a yellow color, because he is manifestly unclean.
40 Vir, de cujus capite capilli fluunt, calvus et mundus est: 41 et si a fronte ceciderint pili, recalvaster et mundus est. 42 Sin autem in calvitio sive in recalvatione albus vel rufus color fuerit exortus, 43 et hoc sacerdos viderit, condemnabit eum haud dubiæ lepræ, quæ orta est in calvitio. 44 Quicumque ergo maculatus fuerit lepra, et separatus est ad arbitrium sacerdotis, 45 habebit vestimenta dissuta, caput nudum, os veste contectum, contaminatum ac sordidum se clamabit.
40 A man, from whose head the hairs have fallen, is bald and clean: 41 and if the hairs have fallen from the front, he is fore-bald and clean. 42 But if in the baldness or in the fore-baldness a white or red color has arisen, 43 and the priest sees this, he shall condemn him of no-doubt leprosy, which has arisen in the baldness. 44 Whoever therefore shall have been spotted with leprosy, and is separated at the judgment of the priest, 45 shall have garments torn, a bare head, the mouth covered with a garment, he shall cry himself contaminated and sordid.
47 Vestis lanea sive linea, quæ lepram habuerit, 48 in stamine atque subtegmine, aut certe pellis, vel quidquid ex pelle confectum est, 49 si alba vel rufa macula fuerit infecta, lepra reputabitur, ostendeturque sacerdoti: 50 qui consideratam recludet septem diebus: 51 et die septimo rursus aspiciens, si deprehenderit crevisse, lepra perseverans est: pollutum judicabit vestimentum, et omne in quo fuerit inventa: 52 et idcirco comburetur flammis. 53 Quod si eam viderit non crevisse, 54 præcipiet, et lavabunt id in quo lepra est, recludetque illud septem diebus aliis. 55 Et cum viderit faciem quidem pristinam non reversam, nec tamen crevisse lepram, immundum judicabit, et igne comburet, eo quod infusa sit in superficie vestimenti, vel per totum, lepra.
47 A woolen or a linen garment which has leprosy, 48 in the warp and the woof, or indeed a skin, or whatever has been made from skin, 49 if a white or red spot has been infected, will be reckoned leprosy, and it shall be shown to the priest: 50 who, having considered it, will shut it up for seven days: 51 and on the seventh day looking again, if he has discovered that it has grown, it is persisting leprosy: he will judge the garment polluted, and everything in which it has been found: 52 and therefore it shall be burned with flames. 53 But if he has seen it has not grown, 54 he will give orders, and they shall wash that in which the leprosy is, and he will shut it up seven other days. 55 And when he has seen that its pristine appearance has not returned, nor yet that the leprosy has grown, he will judge it unclean, and he will burn it with fire, because the leprosy has sunk into the surface of the garment, or through the whole.
56 But if the place of the leprosy has become darker, after the garment has been washed, he shall tear it off and separate it from the solid (sound) fabric. 57 But if thereafter it appears in those places which previously were unspotted, a volatile and wandering leprosy, it must be burned with fire. 58 If it has ceased, he shall wash with water those things which are pure, a second time, and they shall be clean.
59 This is the law of the leprosy of a woolen and a linen garment, of the warp and of the woof, and of every leather furnishing, how it ought to be cleansed or contaminated. 14 1 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 2 This is the rite of the leprous man, when he is to be cleansed. He shall be brought to the priest: 3 who, having gone out from the camp, when he has found that the leprosy has been cleansed, 4 shall command the one who is being purified to offer for himself two live sparrows, which it is lawful to eat, and cedar wood, and vermilion (scarlet), and hyssop.
5 And he shall order that one of the sparrows be immolated in an earthen vessel over living waters: 6 but the other, alive, together with cedar wood and scarlet and hyssop, he shall dip in the blood of the immolated sparrow, 7 with which he shall sprinkle him who is to be cleansed seven times, that he may be duly purged; and he shall let the living sparrow go, that it may fly away into the open field. 8 And when the man has washed his garments, he shall shave all the hairs of his body, and he shall be washed with water: and being purified he shall enter the camp, only let him remain outside his tent for seven days, 9 and on the seventh day he shall shave the hair of his head, and his beard and eyebrows, and the hairs of the whole body. And when his garments and his body have been washed again, 10 on the eighth day he shall take two unblemished lambs, and a year-old ewe without spot, and three tenths of fine flour for a sacrifice, which shall be mixed with oil, and separately a sextary of oil.
11 And when the priest who is purifying the man has set him and all these things before the Lord at the door of the tabernacle of testimony, 12 he shall take the lamb and offer it for the guilt-offering, and a sextarius of oil; and when all have been presented before the Lord, 13 he shall immolate the lamb where the victim for sin and the holocaust are wont to be immolated, that is, in the holy place. For just as for sin, so also for guilt the victim pertains to the priest: it is Holy of Holies. 14 And the priest, taking of the blood of the victim which has been immolated for guilt, shall put it upon the tip of the right ear of him who is being cleansed, and upon the thumb of his right hand and the great toe of his right foot: 15 and of the sextarius of oil he shall put into his own left hand, 16 and he shall dip his right finger into it, and sprinkle before the Lord seven times.
17 And what remains of the oil in the left hand, he will pour upon the extremity of the right ear of him who is being cleansed, and upon the thumbs of the right hand and of the right foot, and upon the blood which was poured out for the delict, 18 and upon his head. 19 And he will pray for him before the Lord, and will make a sacrifice for sin: then he will immolate the holocaust, 20 and will place it upon the altar with its libations, and the man will be cleansed according to rite.
21 Quod si pauper est, et non potest manus ejus invenire quæ dicta sunt pro delicto, assumet agnum ad oblationem, ut roget pro eo sacerdos, decimamque partem similæ conspersæ oleo in sacrificium, et olei sextarium, 22 duosque turtures sive duos pullos columbæ, quorum unus sit pro peccato, et alter in holocaustum: 23 offeretque ea die octavo purificationis suæ sacerdoti, ad ostium tabernaculi testimonii coram Domino. 24 Qui suscipiens agnum pro delicto et sextarium olei, levabit simul: 25 immolatoque agno, de sanguine ejus ponet super extremum auriculæ dextræ illius qui mundatur, et super pollices manus ejus ac pedis dextri: 26 olei vero partem mittet in manum suam sinistram, 27 in quo tingens digitum dextræ manus asperget septies coram Domino: 28 tangetque extremum dextræ auriculæ illius qui mundatur, et pollices manus ac pedis dextri, in loco sanguinis qui effusus est pro delicto: 29 reliquam autem partem olei, quæ est in sinistra manu, mittet super caput purificati, ut placet pro eo Dominum: 30 et turturem sive pullum columbæ offeret, 31 unum pro delicto, et alterum in holocaustum cum libamentis suis. 32 Hoc est sacrificium leprosi, qui habere non potest omnia in emundationem sui.
21 But if he is poor, and his hand cannot find what was prescribed for the trespass, he shall take a lamb for an oblation, that the priest may intercede for him, and a tenth part of fine flour mingled with oil for a sacrifice, and a sextary of oil, 22 and two turtledoves or two young pigeons, of which one shall be for sin, and the other for a holocaust: 23 and on the eighth day of his purification he shall offer them to the priest, at the door of the tabernacle of testimony before the Lord. 24 And he, receiving the lamb for the trespass and the sextary of oil, will lift them together: 25 and when the lamb has been immolated, he shall put of its blood upon the tip of the right ear of him who is being cleansed, and upon the thumbs of his right hand and foot: 26 but of the oil he shall put a portion into his own left hand, 27 and dipping the finger of his right hand into it, he will sprinkle seven times before the Lord: 28 and he will touch the tip of the right ear of him who is being cleansed, and the thumbs of his right hand and foot, in the place of the blood that was poured out for the trespass: 29 but the remaining part of the oil that is in his left hand he shall put upon the head of the purified one, to propitiate the Lord for him: 30 and he shall offer the turtledove or the young pigeon, 31 one for the trespass, and the other for a holocaust with its libations. 32 This is the sacrifice of the leper, who cannot have all things for the cleansing of himself.

33 And the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying: 34 When you have entered the land of Canaan, which I will give you for a possession, if there is a plague of leprosy in the buildings, 35 the one to whom the house belongs shall go, announcing to the priest, and shall say: It seems to me as if there is a plague of leprosy in my house. 36 And he will command that they carry out everything from the house before he enters it and sees whether it is leprous, lest all the things that are in the house become unclean. And afterward he shall enter to inspect the leprosy of the house: 37 and when he sees in its walls as if little valleys—disfigured with pallor or with redness—and lower than the rest of the surface, 38 he shall go out to the door of the house, and immediately he will shut it up for seven days.
39 And having returned on the seventh day, he will inspect it: if he has found that the leprosy has increased, 40 he shall command that the stones in which the leprosy is be torn out, and that they be cast outside the city into an unclean place: 41 but the house itself shall be scraped on the inside all around, and the dust of the scraping be scattered outside the city into an unclean place, 42 and other stones be set in place instead of those which were removed, and the house be plastered with other mortar. 43 But if, after the stones have been torn out, and the dust scraped off, and other earth laid on, 44 the priest, having entered, shall see the leprosy returned, and the walls spattered with spots, it is a persevering leprosy, and the house is unclean: 45 which they shall at once demolish, and its stones and timbers, and all the dust, they shall cast outside the town into an unclean place. 46 Whoever shall enter the house when it is shut up shall be unclean until evening: 47 and whoever shall sleep in it, and shall eat anything, shall wash his garments.

48 But if, on entering, the priest shall see that the leprosy has not grown in the house after it has been plastered anew, he shall purify it, health having been restored: 49 and for its purification he shall take two sparrows, and cedar-wood, and scarlet and hyssop: 50 and, one sparrow having been immolated in an earthen vessel over living waters, 51 he shall take the cedar-wood, and the hyssop, and the scarlet, and the living sparrow, and shall dip all in the blood of the immolated sparrow, and in the living waters, and shall sprinkle the house seven times, 52 and he shall purify it both by the blood of the sparrow and by the living waters, and by the living sparrow, and by the cedar-wood and hyssop and scarlet. 53 And when he has let the sparrow fly out into the field freely, he shall pray for the house, and by law it shall be cleansed. 54 This is the law of every leprosy and blow, 55 of the leprosy of garments and of houses, 56 of scar and of erupting papules, of a shining spot, and, with colors changed, into various kinds, 57 so that it may be known at what time a thing is clean, or unclean.
15 1 And the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying: 2 Speak to the sons of Israel, and say to them: A man who suffers a flow of semen shall be unclean. 3 And then he shall be judged to be subject to this defect, when at every moment it has adhered to his flesh, and the foul humor has thickened. 4 Every bed on which he shall have slept shall be unclean, and wherever he shall have sat.
5 If any man touches his bed, he shall wash his garments, and he himself, having bathed in water, shall be unclean until evening. 6 If he sits where that man sat, he also shall wash his garments: and, bathed in water, shall be unclean until evening. 7 Whoever touches his flesh shall wash his garments: and he himself, having bathed in water, shall be unclean until evening.
8 If a man of this sort throws saliva upon one who is clean, he shall wash his garments; and, bathed with water, he shall be unclean until evening. 9 The pack-saddle upon which he has sat shall be unclean: 10 and whatever is under him who suffers a flow of seed shall be polluted until evening. Whoever carries any of these things shall wash his garments; and he himself, bathed with water, shall be unclean until evening.

13 If he who sustains an affliction of this sort has been healed, he shall count seven days after his cleansing, and, his garments washed and his whole body in living waters washed, he shall be clean. 14 But on the eighth day he shall take two turtledoves, or two young pigeons, and he shall come into the sight of the Lord to the door of the tabernacle of testimony, and he shall give them to the priest: 15 who shall make one for sin and the other as a holocaust; and he shall intercede for him before the Lord, that he may be cleansed from the flux of his semen. 16 A man from whom the seed of coitus goes forth shall wash all his body with water: and he shall be unclean until evening.
19 Mulier, quæ redeunte mense patitur fluxum sanguinis, septem diebus separabitur. 20 Omnis qui tetigerit eam, immundus erit usque ad vesperum: 21 et in quo dormierit vel sederit diebus separationis suæ, polluetur. 22 Qui tetigerit lectum ejus, lavabit vestimenta sua: et ipse lotus aqua, immundus erit usque ad vesperum.
19 A woman who, with the month returning, suffers a flux of blood, shall be separated for seven days. 20 Everyone who touches her shall be unclean until evening: 21 and whatever on which she has lain or sat in the days of her separation shall be polluted. 22 Whoever touches her bed shall wash his garments: and he himself, washed with water, shall be unclean until evening.
23 Every vessel upon which she has sat—whoever touches it shall wash his garments: and he himself, bathed in water, shall be unclean until evening. 24 If a man has intercourse with her at the time of menstrual blood, he shall be unclean for seven days: and every bed on which he lies shall be polluted. 25 A woman who suffers a flow of blood for many days not in the menstrual time, or who does not cease to flow after the menstrual blood—so long as she is subject to this passion—shall be unclean as if she were in the menstrual time.
26 Every bed on which she has lain, and the vessel on which she has sat, will be polluted. 27 Whoever shall have touched her shall wash his garments: and he himself, washed with water, will be unclean until evening. 28 If the blood has stood and has ceased to flow, she shall count seven days of her purification: 29 and on the eighth day she shall offer for herself to the priest two turtledoves, or two young pigeons, at the door of the tabernacle of testimony: 30 who will make one as a sin-offering, and the other as a holocaust, and he will intercede for her before the Lord, and for the flow of her uncleanness.
31 You shall therefore teach the sons of Israel to beware of impurity, and not to die in their filth, when they have polluted my tabernacle which is among them. 32 This is the law of him who suffers a flux of seed, and of him who is defiled by coitus, 33 and of her who is separated in menstrual times, or who flows with blood continually, and of the man who has lain with her. 16 1 And the Lord spoke to Moses after the death of the two sons of Aaron, when, offering foreign fire, they were slain: 2 and he commanded him, saying: Speak to Aaron your brother, that he not enter at all times the sanctuary which is within the veil before the propitiatory with which the ark is covered, lest he die (for in a cloud I will appear over the oracle), 3 unless he has first done these: he shall offer a bull-calf for sin, and a ram as a holocaust. 4 He shall be clothed with a linen tunic, with linen drawers he shall cover the privy parts: he shall gird himself with a linen girdle, he shall place a linen turban on his head: for these garments are holy: with all which, when he has bathed, he shall be clothed.
5 And he shall receive from the whole multitude of the sons of Israel two goats for sin, and one ram for a holocaust. 6 And when he has offered the bull-calf and prayed for himself and for his house, 7 he shall make the two goats stand before the Lord at the door of the tabernacle of testimony: 8 and casting lots over both, one for the Lord, the other for the emissary-goat: 9 the one upon whom the lot for the Lord has come out, he shall offer that one for sin: 10 but the one upon whom the lot has come out for the emissary-goat, he shall set him alive before the Lord, that he may pour forth prayers over him, and he shall send him into the wilderness.
11 His rite celebratis, offeret vitulum, et rogans pro se, et pro domo sua, immolabit eum: 12 assumptoque thuribulo, quod de prunis altaris impleverit, et hauriens manu compositum thymiama in incensum, ultra velum intrabit in sancta: 13 ut, positis super ignem aromatibus, nebula eorum et vapor operiat oraculum quod est supra testimonium, et non moriatur. 14 Tollet quoque de sanguine vituli, et asperget digito septies contra propitiatorium ad orientem.
11 With these rites having been duly celebrated, he will offer the calf, and, praying for himself and for his household, he will immolate it: 12 and, having taken up the thurible, which he will have filled from the coals of the altar, and drawing with his hand a compound of aromatics for incense, he will enter beyond the veil into the holy place: 13 so that, the aromatics having been placed upon the fire, their cloud and vapor may cover the oracle which is above the testimony, and he not die. 14 He will also take from the blood of the calf, and will sprinkle with his finger seven times toward the propitiatory on the east.
15 Cumque mactaverit hircum pro peccato populi, inferet sanguinem ejus intra velum, sicut præceptum est de sanguine vituli, ut aspergat e regione oraculi, 16 et expiet sanctuarium ab immunditiis filiorum Israël, et a prævaricationibus eorum, cunctisque peccatis. Juxta hunc ritum faciet tabernaculo testimonii, quod fixum est inter eos, in medio sordium habitationis eorum. 17 Nullus hominum sit in tabernaculo, quando pontifex sanctuarium ingreditur, ut roget pro se, et pro domo sua, et pro universo cœtu Israël, donec egrediatur.
15 And when he has slain the he-goat for the sin of the people, he shall bring its blood within the veil, as it has been prescribed concerning the blood of the bull, that he may sprinkle it opposite the oracle, 16 and he shall expiate the sanctuary from the uncleannesses of the children of Israel, and from their transgressions, and from all their sins. According to this rite he shall do for the tabernacle of testimony, which is fixed among them, in the midst of the impurities of their habitation. 17 Let no man be in the tabernacle when the high priest enters the sanctuary, that he may pray for himself, and for his household, and for the whole assembly of Israel, until he goes out.
18 But when he goes out to the altar which is before the Lord, let him pray for himself, and, having taken the blood of the bull-calf and of the he-goat, let him pour it upon its horns all around: 19 and, sprinkling with his finger seven times, let him expiate and sanctify it from the impurities of the sons of Israel.
20 Postquam emundaverit sanctuarium, et tabernaculum, et altare, tunc offerat hircum viventem: 21 et posita utraque manu super caput ejus, confiteatur omnes iniquitates filiorum Israël, et universa delicta atque peccata eorum: quæ imprecans capiti ejus, emittet illum per hominem paratum, in desertum. 22 Cumque portaverit hircus omnes iniquitates eorum in terram solitariam, et dimissus fuerit in deserto, 23 revertetur Aaron in tabernaculum testimonii, et depositis vestibus, quibus prius indutus erat, cum intraret sanctuarium, relictisque ibi, 24 lavabit carnem suam in loco sancto, indueturque vestibus suis. Et postquam egressus obtulerit holocaustum suum, ac plebis, rogabit tam pro se quam pro populo: 25 et adipem, qui oblatus est pro peccatis, adolebit super altare.
20 After he has cleansed the sanctuary, and the tabernacle, and the altar, then let him offer the living he-goat: 21 and, with both hands placed upon its head, let him confess all the iniquities of the sons of Israel, and all their delicts and sins: which, imprecating upon its head, he will send it away by a prepared man, into the desert. 22 And when the he-goat has carried all their iniquities into a solitary land, and has been dismissed in the desert, 23 Aaron will return into the tabernacle of the testimony, and, after laying aside the garments with which previously he had been clothed when he entered the sanctuary, and leaving them there, 24 he will wash his flesh in a holy place, and he will be clothed with his garments. And after going out he will offer his holocaust, and the people’s, he will pray both for himself and for the people: 25 and the fat which was offered for sins he will burn upon the altar.
26 But he who lets go the emissary goat shall wash his garments and his body with water, and so he shall enter into the camp. 27 But the bull-calf and the he-goat, which had been immolated for sin, and whose blood was brought into the sanctuary, that expiation might be completed, they shall carry outside the camp, and they shall burn with fire both their hides and their flesh, and their dung: 28 and whoever shall have burned them shall wash his garments and his flesh with water, and so he shall enter into the camp.
29 Eritque vobis hoc legitimum sempiternum: mense septimo, decima die mensis, affligetis animas vestras, nullumque opus facietis, sive indigena, sive advena qui peregrinatur inter vos. 30 In hac die expiatio erit vestri, atque mundatio ab omnibus peccatis vestris: coram Domino mundabimini. 31 Sabbatum enim requietionis est, et affligetis animas vestras religione perpetua.
29 And this shall be for you a perpetual statute: in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, you shall afflict your souls, and you shall do no work, either the native-born or the sojourner who sojourns among you. 30 On this day there shall be atonement for you, and cleansing from all your sins: before the Lord you shall be cleansed. 31 For it is a sabbath of rest, and you shall afflict your souls by a perpetual religious observance.
32 But the priest shall make expiation, who has been anointed, and whose hands have been initiated that he may function in the priesthood in place of his father; and he shall be clothed with the linen stole and the holy vestments, 33 and he shall make expiation for the sanctuary and the tabernacle of testimony and the altar, and also for the priests and for the whole people. 34 And this shall be for you a perpetual statute, that you may pray for the sons of Israel, and for all their sins, once in the year. Therefore he did just as the Lord had commanded Moses.
17 1 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 2 Speak to Aaron and his sons, and to all the sons of Israel, saying to them: This is the word which the Lord has commanded, saying: 3 Any man of the house of Israel, if he shall kill an ox or a sheep, or a goat, in the camp or outside the camp, 4 and shall not bring to the door of the tabernacle an oblation to the Lord, he shall be guilty of blood: as if he had shed blood, thus he shall perish from the midst of his people. 5 Therefore the sons of Israel ought to offer to the priest their victims which they slaughter in the field, that they may be sanctified to the Lord before the door of the tabernacle of testimony, and that they may immolate them as peace-offerings to the Lord. 6 And the priest shall pour out the blood upon the altar of the Lord at the door of the tabernacle of testimony, and shall burn the fat as an odor of sweetness to the Lord: 7 and by no means any longer shall they immolate their victims to demons, with whom they have fornicated.
It shall be an everlasting statute for them and for their descendants. 8 And to them you shall say: Any man of the house of Israel, and of the sojourners who peregrinate among you, who offers a holocaust or a victim, 9 and does not bring it to the door of the tabernacle of testimony, to be offered to the Lord, shall perish from his people.
10 Homo quilibet de domo Israël et de advenis qui peregrinantur inter eos, si comederit sanguinem, obfirmabo faciem meam contra animam illius, et disperdam eam de populo suo, 11 quia anima carnis in sanguine est: et ego dedi illum vobis, ut super altare in eo expietis pro animabus vestris, et sanguis pro animæ piaculo sit. 12 Idcirco dixi filiis Israël: Omnis anima ex vobis non comedet sanguinem, nec ex advenis qui peregrinantur apud vos. 13 Homo quicumque de filiis Israël, et de advenis qui peregrinantur apud vos, si venatione atque aucupio ceperit feram, vel avem, quibus vesci licitum est, fundat sanguinem ejus, et operiat illum terra.
10 Any man of the house of Israël and of the sojourners who sojourn among them, if he shall eat blood, I will set my face firm against that soul, and I will destroy it from among his people, 11 because the soul of the flesh is in the blood; and I have given it to you, that upon the altar in it you may make expiation for your souls, and that the blood may be for the soul’s piacular expiation. 12 Therefore I said to the sons of Israël: No soul among you shall eat blood, nor any of the sojourners who sojourn among you. 13 Any man of the sons of Israël, and of the sojourners who sojourn among you, if by hunting and bird‑catching he shall take a wild beast or a bird which it is lawful to eat, let him pour out its blood and cover it with earth.
14 For the soul of all flesh is in the blood: whence I said to the sons of Israel: You shall not eat the blood of all flesh, because the soul of the flesh is in the blood; and whoever shall eat it shall perish. 15 A soul that eats a carcass, or what is taken by a beast, as well of the natives as of the sojourners, shall wash his garments and himself with water, and he shall be contaminated until evening; and in this order he shall become clean. 16 But if he does not wash his garments and his body, he shall bear his iniquity.
18 1 The Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 2 Speak to the sons of Israel, and you shall say to them: I am the Lord your God: 3 According to the custom of the land of Egypt, in which you dwelt, you shall not do; and according to the manner of the region of Canaan, into which I am about to lead you, you shall not act, nor shall you walk in their statutes. 4 You shall do my judgments, and you shall keep my precepts, and you shall walk in them. I am the Lord your God.
9 You shall not reveal the nakedness of your sister, whether by your father or by your mother, whether born at home or abroad. 10 You shall not reveal the nakedness of your son’s daughter or of your granddaughter by your daughter: for it is your own nakedness. 11 You shall not reveal the nakedness of the daughter of your father’s wife, whom she bore to your father, and she is your sister.
12 You shall not uncover the nakedness of your father’s sister: for she is your father’s flesh. 13 You shall not reveal the nakedness of your mother’s sister, because she is your mother’s flesh. 14 You shall not reveal the nakedness of your father’s brother, nor shall you approach his wife, who is joined to you by affinity. 15 You shall not reveal the nakedness of your daughter-in-law, because she is your son’s wife: nor shall you uncover her shame.
16 You shall not reveal the nakedness of your brother’s wife: for it is your brother’s nakedness. 17 You shall not reveal the nakedness of your wife and her daughter. The daughter of her son and the daughter of her daughter you shall not take, to reveal her ignominy: for they are her flesh, and such coitus is incestuous.
19 Ad mulierem quæ patitur menstrua non accedes, nec revelabis fœditatem ejus. 20 Cum uxore proximi tui non coibis, nec seminis commistione maculaberis. 21 De semine tuo non dabis ut consecretur idolo Moloch, nec pollues nomen Dei tui.
19 You shall not approach a woman who suffers menstruation, nor shall you reveal her foulness. 20 With the wife of your neighbor you shall not go together, nor shall you be stained by a commixture of seed. 21 Of your seed you shall not give to be consecrated to the idol Moloch, nor shall you pollute the name of your God.
24 Do not be defiled in all these things by which all the nations have been contaminated, whom I will cast out before your sight, 25 and by which the land has been polluted: whose crimes I will visit, that it may vomit out its inhabitants. 26 Keep my statutes and my judgments, and do not do any of all these abominations, both the indigene and the colonist who sojourns among you. 27 For all these execrations have been done by the dwellers of the land who were before you, and they have polluted it.
4 Do not turn to idols, nor make cast-metal gods for yourselves. I am the Lord your God. 5 If you immolate a victim of peace-offerings to the Lord, that it may be acceptable, 6 on the day on which it has been immolated you shall eat it, and on the next day; but whatever remains until the third day, you shall burn with fire.
9 Cumque messueris segetes terræ tuæ, non tondebis usque ad solum superficiem terræ, nec remanentes spicas colliges, 10 neque in vinea tua racemos et grana decidentia congregabis: sed pauperibus et peregrinis carpenda dimittes. Ego Dominus Deus vester. 11 Non facietis furtum.
9 And when you shall have reaped the harvests of your land, you shall not shear down to the ground the surface of the land, nor gather the remaining ears; 10 nor in your vineyard shall you collect the racemes (clusters) and the berries that have fallen: but for paupers and foreigners you shall leave them to be plucked. I am the Lord your God. 11 You shall not commit theft.
A garment which is woven out of two kinds you shall not put on. 20 A man, if he has lain with a woman in coition of seed, who is a slave, yet nubile, and nevertheless not redeemed by a price nor given the liberty: they both shall be scourged, and they shall not die, because she was not free. 21 But for his delict he shall offer to the Lord at the door of the tabernacle of testimony a ram: 22 and the priest shall pray for him, and for his sin before the Lord, and he shall be propitiated again, and the sin shall be remitted.
23 When you have entered the land, and have planted in it fruit-bearing trees, you shall take away their foreskins: the fruits which they germinate shall be unclean for you, nor shall you eat from them. 24 But in the fourth year all their fruit shall be sanctified, praiseworthy to the Lord. 25 But in the fifth year you shall eat the fruits, gathering the fruits which they produce.
37 Keep all my precepts, and all my judgments, and do them. I am the Lord. 20 1 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 2 These things you shall speak to the sons of Israel: Any man of the sons of Israel, and of the sojourners who dwell in Israel, if anyone gives of his seed to the idol Moloch, he shall surely die; the people of the land shall stone him. 3 And I will set my face against him: and I will cut him off from the midst of his people, because he has given of his seed to Moloch, and has contaminated my sanctuary, and has polluted my holy name.
4 But if the people of the land, negligent and as if slighting my command, let go the man who has given of his seed to Moloch, and are unwilling to put him to death: 5 I will set my face against that man and against his kin, and I will cut off both him and all who have consented to him, to fornicate with Moloch, from the midst of his people. 6 The soul that shall turn aside to magi and diviners, and shall have fornicated with them, I will set my face against that soul, and I will put it to death from the midst of his people. 7 Sanctify yourselves and be holy, for I am the Lord your God.
10 Si mœchatus quis fuerit cum uxore alterius, et adulterium perpetraverit cum conjuge proximi sui, morte moriantur et mœchus et adultera. 11 Qui dormierit cum noverca sua, et revelaverit ignominiam patris sui, morte moriantur ambo: sanguis eorum sit super eos. 12 Si quis dormierit cum nuru sua, uterque moriatur, quia scelus operati sunt: sanguis eorum sit super eos.
10 If anyone has committed adultery with another man’s wife, and has perpetrated adultery with the spouse of his neighbor, by death let both the adulterer and the adulteress die. 11 Whoever lies with his stepmother, and has unveiled his father’s ignominy, let both of them die: their blood shall be upon them. 12 If anyone lies with his daughter-in-law, let each of them die, for they have perpetrated a crime: their blood shall be upon them.
13 He who lies with a male in feminine intercourse, both have wrought a nefarious deed: let them die: let their blood be upon them. 14 He who, besides a wife, has taken her mother, has wrought a crime: he shall burn alive with them, and so great a nefariousness shall not remain in your midst. 15 Whoever has had intercourse with a beast of burden and with cattle, let him die: kill the beast also.
16 A woman who has lain down beneath any beast shall be killed together with it: their blood shall be upon them. 17 Whoever has taken his sister, the daughter of his father or the daughter of his mother, and has seen her turpitude, and she has looked upon her brother’s ignominy, they have wrought a nefarious thing: they shall be killed in the sight of their people, because they have mutually revealed their turpitude, and they shall bear their iniquity. 18 Whoever has had intercourse with a woman in her menstrual flux, and has revealed her turpitude, and she herself has opened the fountain of her blood, they both shall be killed from the midst of their people.
19 You shall not uncover the turpitude of your maternal aunt and your paternal aunt: whoever does this has bared the ignominy of his flesh; both shall bear their iniquity. 20 Whoever has intercourse with the wife of his paternal or maternal uncle, and has revealed the ignominy of his kinship, both shall bear their sin: they shall die without children. 21 Whoever takes his brother’s wife does an illicit thing: he has revealed the turpitude of his brother: they shall be without children.
25 Therefore do you also separate the clean beast from the unclean, and the clean bird from the unclean: do not defile your souls by the cattle, and the birds, and all that move upon the earth, and which I have shown you to be defiled. 26 You shall be holy to me, because I, the Lord, am holy, and I have separated you from the other peoples, that you might be mine. 27 A man or a woman, in whom there shall be a pythonic, or spirit of divination, let them surely die: they shall overwhelm them with stones: their blood shall be upon them.
21 1 The Lord also said to Moses: Speak to the priests, the sons of Aaron, and you shall say to them: Let not a priest be contaminated by the deaths of his people, 2 except only in kinsfolk and near relatives, that is, over father and mother, and son and daughter, and also brother, 3 and a virgin sister who has not been married to a man: 4 but neither shall he be contaminated for a prince of his people. 5 They shall not shave the head, nor the beard, nor make incisions in their flesh. 6 They shall be holy to their God, and shall not pollute his name: for they offer the incense of the Lord and the breads of their God, and therefore they shall be holy.
7 A harlot and a vile prostitute they shall not take as a wife, nor her who has been repudiated by her husband: because they are consecrated to their God, 8 and they offer the loaves of proposition. Therefore let them be holy, because I too am holy, the Lord who sanctifies them. 9 If a priest’s daughter shall have been caught in fornication, and shall have violated her father’s name, she shall be burned with flames.
10 Pontifex, id est, sacerdos maximus inter fratres suos, super cujus caput fusum est unctionis oleum, et cujus manus in sacerdotio consecratæ sunt, vestitusque est sanctis vestibus, caput suum non discooperiet, vestimenta non scindet: 11 et ad omnem mortuum non ingredietur omnino: super patre quoque suo et matre non contaminabitur. 12 Nec egredietur de sanctis, ne polluat sanctuarium Domini, quia oleum sanctæ unctionis Dei sui super eum est. Ego Dominus.
10 The Pontiff, that is, the high priest among his brothers, upon whose head the oil of anointing has been poured, and whose hands have been consecrated in the priesthood, and who is clothed with holy vestments, shall not uncover his head, nor rend his garments: 11 and he shall not at all go in to any dead person: he shall not defile himself even for his father or his mother. 12 Nor shall he go out from the holy things, lest he pollute the sanctuary of the Lord, because the oil of the holy unction of his God is upon him. I am the Lord.
13 He shall take a virgin as a wife: 14 but a widow and one repudiated, and a soiled woman, and a meretrix he shall not take, but a girl from his own people: 15 lest he mingle the stock of his lineage with the common folk of his nation: for I am the Lord, who sanctify him. 16 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 17 Speak to Aaron: Any man of your seed by families who has a blemish shall not offer the breads of his God, 18 nor shall he approach to his ministry: if he be blind, if lame, if with a nose small or large or twisted, 19 if with a broken foot, or hand, 20 if a hunchback, if bleary-eyed, if having a white-spot in the eye, if with chronic scab, if with impetigo on the body, or herniated. 21 Everyone who has a blemish of the seed of Aaron the priest shall not approach to offer sacrifices to the Lord, nor the breads of his God: 22 nevertheless he shall eat of the breads that are offered in the sanctuary, 23 only with this condition, that he not enter within the veil, nor approach the altar, because he has a blemish, and he ought not to contaminate my sanctuary.
I am the Lord who sanctify them. 24 Therefore Moses spoke to Aaron, and to his sons, and to all Israel, all the things that had been commanded to him. 22 1 The Lord also spoke to Moses, saying: 2 Speak to Aaron and to his sons, that they beware of the things consecrated of the sons of Israel, and that they not defile the name of the things sanctified to me, which they themselves offer.
4 A man of the seed of Aaron, who is leprous or suffering a flux of seed, shall not eat of those things which are sanctified to me until he is healed. Whoever touches anything unclean on account of a dead person, and from whom seed goes out as in coitus, 5 and whoever touches a reptile, and whatever unclean thing whose touch is sordid, 6 shall be unclean until evening, and he shall not eat of those things which are sanctified; but when he has washed his flesh with water, 7 and the sun has set, then, cleansed, he shall eat of the sanctified things, because it is his food. 8 They shall not eat a carcass or what is taken by a beast, nor shall they be polluted by them.
10 Every alien-born shall not eat of the things sanctified; the lodger of a priest and the hireling shall not feed from them. 11 But whomever the priest shall have bought, and whoever is the homeborn of his house, these shall eat of them. 12 If a priest’s daughter shall have been married to anyone of the people, she shall not eat of the things that are sanctified, nor of the first-fruits.
13 But if, however, a widow, or repudiated, and without children, shall have returned to the house of her father: as a girl she was accustomed, she shall be nourished with her father’s foods. No foreigner has the power of eating from them. 14 Whoever shall have eaten of the sanctified things through ignorance shall add a fifth part to that which he ate, and shall give it to the priest in the sanctuary.
17 Locutusque est Dominus ad Moysen, dicens: 18 Loquere ad Aaron et filios ejus, et ad omnes filios Israël, dicesque ad eos: Homo de domo Israël, et de advenis qui habitant apud vos, qui obtulerit oblationem suam, vel vota solvens, vel sponte offerens, quidquid illud obtulerit in holocaustum Domini, 19 ut offeratur per vos, masculus immaculatus erit ex bobus, et ovibus, et ex capris: 20 si maculam habuerit, non offeretis, neque erit acceptabile. 21 Homo qui obtulerit victimam pacificorum Domino, vel vota solvens, vel sponte offerens, tam de bobus quam de ovibus, immaculatum offeret ut acceptabile sit: omnis macula non erit in eo. 22 Si cæcum fuerit, si fractum, si cicatricem habens, si papulas, aut scabiem, aut impetiginem: non offeretis ea Domino, nec adolebitis ex eis super altare Domini. 23 Bovem et ovem, aure et cauda amputatis, voluntarie offerre potes, votum autem ex eis solvi non potest.
17 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 18 Speak to Aaron and his sons, and to all the sons of Israel, and you shall say to them: A man of the house of Israel, and of the sojourners who dwell among you, who shall offer his oblation, either paying vows, or offering of his own accord, whatever he shall offer as a holocaust to the Lord, 19 that it may be offered by you, shall be a male immaculate from the oxen, and the sheep, and from the goats: 20 if it shall have a blemish, you shall not offer it, nor shall it be acceptable. 21 A man who shall offer a victim of peace-offerings to the Lord, either paying vows or offering of his own accord, whether from the oxen or from the sheep, he shall offer it immaculate that it may be acceptable: no blemish shall be in it. 22 If it be blind, if broken, if having a scar, if pustules, or scab, or impetigo: you shall not offer these to the Lord, nor shall you burn from them upon the altar of the Lord. 23 An ox and a sheep, with ear and tail cut off, you may offer voluntarily, but a vow from them cannot be discharged.
24 Every animal which has its testicles either crushed, or bruised, or cut and removed, you shall not offer to the Lord, and in your land you shall by no means do this. 25 From the hand of a foreigner you shall not offer the bread of your God, nor whatever else he may wish to give, for all of them are corrupt and blemished: you shall not accept them. 26 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 27 An ox, a sheep, and a goat, when they are born, shall be under the udder of their mother for seven days: but on the eighth day, and thereafter, they can be offered to the Lord. 28 Whether it be a cow or a sheep, they shall not be immolated on the same day with their offspring.
32 Do not pollute my holy name, that I may be sanctified in the midst of the sons of Israel. I am the Lord who sanctifies you, 33 and I led you out of the land of Egypt, that I might be to you for God. I am the Lord. 23 1 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 2 Speak to the sons of Israel, and you shall say to them: These are the feast days of the Lord, which you shall proclaim as holy.
5 Mense primo, quartadecima die mensis ad vesperum, Phase Domini est: 6 et quintadecima die mensis hujus, solemnitas azymorum Domini est. Septem diebus azyma comedetis. 7 Dies primus erit vobis celeberrimus, sanctusque: omne opus servile non facietis in eo, 8 sed offeretis sacrificium in igne Domino septem diebus.
5 In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month at evening, the Pasch of the Lord is: 6 and on the fifteenth day of this month, the solemnity of the Unleavened Breads of the Lord is. For seven days you shall eat azymes. 7 The first day shall be for you most solemn and holy: you shall not do any servile work on it, 8 but you shall offer an offering by fire to the Lord for seven days.
But the seventh day shall be more celebrated and more holy: and you shall do no servile work on it. 9 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 10 Speak to the sons of Israel, and you shall say to them: When you shall have entered the land which I will give to you, and you have reaped the crop, you shall bring sheaves of ears, the first-fruits of your harvest, to the priest: 11 who will elevate the little bundle before the Lord, that it may be acceptable for you, on the morrow of the sabbath, and he shall sanctify it. 12 And on the same day on which the sheaf is consecrated, an immaculate yearling lamb shall be slain as a holocaust to the Lord. 13 And libations shall be offered with it, two tenths of fine flour sprinkled with oil for an incense to the Lord, and a most sweet odor: and also libations of wine, a fourth part of a hin.
15 Numerabitis ergo ab altero die sabbati, in quo obtulistis manipulum primitiarum, septem hebdomadas plenas, 16 usque ad alteram diem expletionis hebdomadæ septimæ, id est, quinquaginta dies: et sic offeretis sacrificium novum Domino 17 ex omnibus habitaculis vestris, panes primitiarum duos de duabus decimis similæ fermentatæ, quos coquetis in primitias Domini. 18 Offeretisque cum panibus septem agnos immaculatos anniculos, et vitulum de armento unum, et arietes duos, et erunt in holocaustum cum libamentis suis, in odorem suavissimum Domini. 19 Facietis et hircum pro peccato, duosque agnos anniculos hostias pacificorum.
15 You shall therefore count from the morrow of the sabbath, on which you offered the sheaf of the first-fruits, seven full weeks, 16 up to the morrow of the completion of the seventh week, that is, fifty days; and thus you shall offer a new sacrifice to the Lord 17 from all your habitations, two loaves of first-fruits from two tenths of fine flour leavened, which you shall bake as first-fruits to the Lord. 18 And you shall offer with the loaves seven immaculate yearling lambs, and one young bull from the herd, and two rams, and they shall be in holocaust with their libations, for a most sweet fragrance to the Lord. 19 And you shall make a he-goat for sin, and two yearling lambs as victims of peace-offerings.
20 And when the priest has lifted them with the loaves of the firstfruits before the Lord, they shall accrue to his use. 21 And you shall call this day most celebrated and most holy: you shall not do any servile work on it. It shall be a perpetual statute in all your habitations, and in your generations. 22 But after you have reaped the crop of your land, you shall not cut it down to the very ground, nor gather the remaining ears of grain: but you shall leave them to the poor and to the peregrins.
23 Locutusque est Dominus ad Moysen, dicens: 24 Loquere filiis Israël: Mense septimo, prima die mensis, erit vobis sabbatum, memoriale, clangentibus tubis, et vocabitur sanctum: 25 omne opus servile non facietis in eo, et offeretis holocaustum Domino.
23 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 24 Speak to the sons of Israel: In the seventh month, on the first day of the month, there shall be for you a sabbath, a memorial, with trumpets clanging, and it shall be called holy: 25 you shall not do any servile work on it, and you shall offer a holocaust to the Lord.
26 Locutusque est Dominus ad Moysen, dicens: 27 Decimo die mensis hujus septimi, dies expiationum erit celeberrimus, et vocabitur sanctus: affligetisque animas vestras in eo, et offeretis holocaustum Domino. 28 Omne opus servile non facietis in tempore diei hujus: quia dies propitiationis est, ut propitietur vobis Dominus Deus vester. 29 Omnis anima, quæ afflicta non fuerit die hac, peribit de populis suis: 30 et quæ operis quippiam fecerit, delebo eam de populo suo.
26 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 27 On the tenth day of this seventh month, the day of expiations will be most solemn, and it shall be called holy: and you shall afflict your souls in it, and you shall offer a holocaust to the Lord. 28 You shall do no servile work in the time of this day: because it is a day of propitiation, that the Lord your God may be propitiated for you. 29 Every soul which shall not have been afflicted on this day shall perish from his peoples: 30 and whoever shall have done anything of work, I will blot her out from his people.

33 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 34 Speak to the sons of Israel: From the fifteenth day of this seventh month, there shall be holidays of Tabernacles for seven days to the Lord. 35 The first day shall be called most celebrated and most holy: you shall do no servile work on it. 36 And for seven days you shall offer holocausts to the Lord. The eighth day also shall be most celebrated, and most holy, and you shall offer a holocaust to the Lord: for it is a convocation and a gathering: you shall do no servile work on it. 37 These are the holidays of the Lord, which you shall call most celebrated and most holy, and you shall offer in them oblations to the Lord, holocausts and libations according to the rite of each day: 38 excepting the sabbaths of the Lord, and your gifts, and what you shall offer by vow, or what you shall bestow of your own accord to the Lord.
39 Therefore from the fifteenth day of the seventh month, when you have gathered all the fruits of your land, you shall celebrate the feasts of the Lord for seven days: on the first day and on the eighth day there shall be a sabbath, that is, rest. 40 And you shall take for yourselves on the first day the fruits of a most beautiful tree, and palm fronds, and branches of a tree of dense foliage, and willows of the brook, and you shall rejoice before the Lord your God. 41 And you shall celebrate its solemnity seven days per year: it shall be a perpetual statute in your generations.
In the seventh month you shall celebrate feasts, 42 and you shall dwell in booths for seven days: everyone who is of the stock of Israel shall remain in tabernacles, 43 so that your posterity may learn that I made the sons of Israel dwell in tabernacles when I led them out of the land of Egypt. I am the Lord your God. 44 And Moses spoke to the sons of Israel concerning the solemnities of the Lord. 24 1 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 2 Command the sons of Israel to bring to you oil from olives most pure and clear, for the trimming of the lamps continually, 3 outside the veil of the testimony in the tabernacle of the covenant.
And Aaron shall set them from evening until morning before the Lord, by a perpetual service and rite throughout your generations. 4 Upon the most pure lampstand they shall always be placed in the sight of the Lord. 5 You shall also take fine flour, and from it you shall bake twelve loaves, each of which shall have two tenths; 6 six apiece on either side you shall set upon the most pure table before the Lord; 7 and you shall place upon them the most bright frankincense, so that it may be bread as a memorial of the offering of the Lord.
10 Ecce autem egressus filius mulieris Israëlitidis, quem pepererat de viro ægyptio inter filios Israël, jurgatus est in castris cum viro Israëlita. 11 Cumque blasphemasset nomen, et maledixisset ei, adductus est ad Moysen. 10 Behold, however, the son of an Israelite woman—whom she had borne by an Egyptian man—went out among the sons of Israel, and he quarreled in the camp with an Israelite man. 11 And when he had blasphemed the Name and had cursed it, he was brought to Moses. (Now his mother was called Salumith, the daughter of Dabri, of the tribe of Dan.) 12 And they put him in prison, until they might know what the Lord would command.
13 Who spoke to Moses, 14 saying: Lead the blasphemer outside the camp, and let all who heard lay their hands upon his head, and let the whole people stone him. 15 And you shall speak to the sons of Israel: A man who curses his God shall bear his sin; 16 and whoever blasphemes the name of the Lord shall surely die: the whole multitude shall press him down with stones, whether he be a citizen or a sojourner. Whoever blasphemes the name of the Lord shall surely die.
17 Qui percusserit, et occiderit hominem, morte moriatur. 18 Qui percusserit animal, reddet vicarium, id est, animam pro anima. 19 Qui irrogaverit maculam cuilibet civium suorum, sicut fecit, sic fiet ei: 20 fracturam pro fractura, oculum pro oculo, dentem pro dente restituet: qualem inflixerit maculam, talem sustinere cogetur.
17 Whoever shall have struck, and killed a human, let him die by death. 18 Whoever shall have struck an animal, he shall render a vicarious equivalent, that is, a soul for a soul. 19 Whoever shall have imposed a blemish on any of his fellow citizens, as he has done, so shall it be done to him: 20 he shall restore fracture for fracture, eye for eye, tooth for tooth: such a blemish as he has inflicted, such he shall be compelled to sustain.
23 And Moses spoke to the sons of Israel: and they led out the one who had blasphemed outside the camp, and they overwhelmed him with stones. And the sons of Israel did as the Lord had commanded Moses. 25 1 And the Lord spoke to Moses on Mount Sinai, saying: 2 Speak to the sons of Israel, and you shall say to them: When you shall have entered the land which I will give to you, you shall sabbatize a sabbath to the Lord.
3 For six years you shall sow your field, and for six years you shall prune your vineyard, and you shall gather its fruits: 4 but in the seventh year there shall be a sabbath for the land, a rest of the Lord: you shall not sow your field, and you shall not prune your vineyard. 5 What the soil brings forth of its own accord you shall not reap; and the grapes of your firstfruits you shall not gather as a vintage: for it is a year of the land’s rest: 6 but they shall be for you for food—for you and your male slave and your female slave and your hireling, and the advena who peregrinates with you: 7 for your beasts of burden and your livestock, all that springs up shall furnish food.
8 Numerabis quoque tibi septem hebdomadas annorum, id est, septies septem, quæ simul faciunt annos quadraginta novem: 9 et clanges buccina mense septimo, decima die mensis, propitiationis tempore, in universa terra vestra. 10 Sanctificabisque annum quinquagesimum, et vocabis remissionem cunctis habitatoribus terræ tuæ: ipse est enim jubilæus. Revertetur homo ad possessionem suam, et unusquisque rediet ad familiam pristinam: 11 quia jubilæus est, et quinquagesimus annus. Non seretis neque metetis sponte in agro nascentia, et primitias vindemiæ non colligetis, 12 ob sanctificationem jubilæi: sed statim oblata comedetis.
8 You shall also number for yourself seven hebdomads of years, that is, seven times seven, which together make forty-nine years: 9 and you shall sound the trumpet in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, at the time of propitiation, in all your land. 10 And you shall sanctify the fiftieth year, and you shall call a remission for all the inhabitants of your land: for it is the jubilee. A man shall return to his possession, and each one shall go back to his former family: 11 because it is the jubilee, the fiftieth year. You shall not sow, nor reap the things springing up of themselves in the field, and you shall not gather the first-fruits of the vintage, 12 on account of the sanctification of the jubilee: but you shall immediately eat what is brought forth.
13 Anno jubilæi, redient omnes ad possessiones suas. 14 Quando vendes quippiam civi tuo, vel emes ab eo, ne contristes fratrem tuum, sed juxta numerum annorum jubilæi emes ab eo, 15 et juxta supputationem frugum vendet tibi. 16 Quanto plures anni remanserint post jubilæum, tanto crescet et pretium: et quanto minus temporis numeraveris, tanto minoris et emptio constabit: tempus enim frugum vendet tibi.
13 In the year of the jubilee, all shall return to their possessions. 14 When you sell anything to your fellow citizen, or buy from him, do not aggrieve your brother, but according to the number of the years after the jubilee you shall buy from him, 15 and according to the computation of the crops he shall sell to you. 16 The more years there remain after the jubilee, the more the price shall increase: and the less time you reckon, the cheaper the purchase will be: for he sells to you the time of the crops.
17 Do not afflict your fellow-tribesmen, but let each one fear his God, for I am the Lord your God. 18 Do my precepts, and keep my judgments, and fulfill them: that you may be able to dwell in the land without any fear, 19 and the ground may beget for you its fruits, with which you may eat unto satiety, fearing the attack of no one. 20 And if you should say: What shall we eat in the seventh year, if we have not sown, nor gathered our crops ? 21 I will give my blessing to you in the sixth year, and it shall make the fruits of three years: 22 and you shall sow in the eighth year, and you shall eat the old fruits up to the ninth year: until the new spring forth, you shall eat the old.
23 The land also shall not be sold in perpetuity, because it is mine, and you are sojourners and colonists with me: 24 whence the whole region of your possession shall be sold under a condition of redemption. 25 If your brother, having been impoverished, shall have sold his little possession, and his kinsman is willing, he can redeem what he had sold. 26 But if he should not have a near relative, and he himself can find the price for redeeming, 27 the fruits shall be computed from the time when he sold: and what remains he shall render to the buyer, and thus he shall receive back his possession.
28 But if his hand should not find so as to pay the price, the buyer shall have what he bought until the year of jubilee. For in it every sale shall return to the owner and to the former possessor. 29 He who shall have sold a house within the city’s walls shall have license of redeeming it until one year be completed. 30 If he does not redeem it, and the circle of the year has revolved, the buyer shall possess it, and his descendants, in perpetuity, and it cannot be redeemed, even in the jubilee. 31 But if the house is in a village which has no walls, it shall be sold under the law of fields: if it is not redeemed beforehand, in the jubilee it shall return to the owner.
32 The houses of the Levites that are in the cities can always be redeemed: 33 if they are not redeemed, in the jubilee they shall return to their owners, because the houses of the cities of the Levites serve as possessions among the sons of Israel. 34 But their suburbs are not to be sold, because it is an everlasting possession.
35 Si attenuatus fuerit frater tuus, et infirmus manu, et susceperis eum quasi advenam et peregrinum, et vixerit tecum, 36 ne accipias usuras ab eo, nec amplius quam dedisti: time Deum tuum, ut vivere possit frater tuus apud te. 37 Pecuniam tuam non dabis ei ad usuram, et frugum superabundantiam non exiges. 38 Ego Dominus Deus vester, qui eduxi vos de terra Ægypti, ut darem vobis terram Chanaan, et essem vester Deus.
35 If your brother shall have been impoverished, and infirm in hand, and you receive him as a sojourner and a pilgrim, and he lives with you, 36 do not take usury from him, nor more than you have given: fear your God, that your brother may be able to live with you. 37 You shall not give your money to him at usury, and you shall not exact the superabundance of produce. 38 I am the Lord your God, who led you out of the land of Egypt, to give you the land of Canaan, and to be your God.
39 Si paupertate compulsus vendiderit se tibi frater tuus, non eum opprimes servitute famulorum, 40 sed quasi mercenarius et colonus erit: usque ad annum jubilæum operabitur apud te, 41 et postea egredietur cum liberis suis, et revertetur ad cognationem, ad possessionem patrum suorum. 42 Mei enim servi sunt, et ego eduxi eos de terra Ægypti: non veneant conditione servorum: 43 ne affligas eum per potentiam, sed metuito Deum tuum. 44 Servus et ancilla sint vobis de nationibus quæ in circuitu vestro sunt: 45 et de advenis qui peregrinantur apud vos, vel qui ex his nati fuerint in terra vestra, hos habebitis famulos: 46 et hæreditario jure transmittetis ad posteros, ac possidebitis in æternum: fratres autem vestros filios Israël ne opprimatis per potentiam.
39 If your brother, compelled by poverty, sells himself to you, you shall not oppress him with the servitude of servants, 40 but he shall be as a hireling and a tenant-farmer: he shall work with you until the year of Jubilee, 41 and afterward he shall go out with his children, and he shall return to his kin, to the possession of his fathers. 42 For they are my servants, and I brought them out from the land of Egypt: let them not be sold with the condition of slaves: 43 do not afflict him by your power, but fear your God. 44 A male slave and a female slave shall be for you from the nations that are around you: 45 and from the sojourners who sojourn among you, or who from them shall have been born in your land, these you shall have as servants: 46 and by hereditary right you shall transmit them to your descendants, and you shall possess them forever: but your brothers, the sons of Israel, you shall not oppress by power.
47 If the hand of the sojourner and pilgrim has grown strong among you, and your brother, attenuated, has sold himself to him, or to anyone of his stock: 48 after the sale he can be redeemed. Whoever of his brothers wishes shall redeem him, 49 and [his] paternal uncle, and [his] paternal cousin, and a consanguine (blood-kin), and an affine (kinsman by marriage). But if he himself is able, he shall redeem himself, 50 the years only being reckoned from the time of his sale up to the Jubilee year: and the money for which he had been sold reckoned according to the number of years and the rate of a hireling.
51 If there are more years which remain until the jubilee, according to these he shall also render the price: 52 if few, he shall set an account with him according to the number of years, and he shall pay back to the purchaser what remains for the years, 53 crediting the wages for which he previously served: he shall not afflict him violently in your sight. 54 But if through these he cannot be redeemed, in the year of the jubilee he shall go out with his children. 55 For the sons of Israel are my servants, whom I led out of the land of Egypt.
I am the Lord. 3 If you will walk in my precepts, and will keep my mandates, and will do them, I will give you rains in their seasons, 4 and the land will beget its germ, and the trees will be filled with fruits. 5 The threshing of the harvest will overtake the vintage, and the vintage will overtake the sowing: and you will eat your bread in satiety, and you will dwell without dread in your land.
8 Five of yours shall pursue a hundred aliens, and a hundred of you ten thousand: your enemies shall fall by the sword in your sight. 9 I will look upon you, and I will cause you to grow: you will be multiplied, and I will make firm my pact with you. 10 You shall eat the very oldest of the old, and you shall cast out the old with new things supervening.
11 I will set my tabernacle in the midst of you, and my soul will not cast you away. 12 I will walk among you, and I will be your God, and you shall be my people. 13 I am the Lord your God, who led you out of the land of the Egyptians, that you might not serve them: and who broke the chains of your necks, that you might walk upright.
14 Quod si non audieritis me, nec feceritis omnia mandata mea, 15 si spreveritis leges meas, et judicia mea contempseritis, ut non faciatis ea quæ a me constituta sunt, et ad irritum perducatis pactum meum: 16 ego quoque hæc faciam vobis: visitabo vos velociter in egestate, et ardore, qui conficiat oculos vestros, et consumat animas vestras. Frustra seretis sementem, quæ ab hostibus devorabitur. 17 Ponam faciem meam contra vos, et corruetis coram hostibus vestris, et subjiciemini his qui oderunt vos: fugietis, nemine persequente.
14 But if you will not hear me, nor do all my commandments, 15 if you despise my laws, and scorn my judgments, so that you do not do the things which have been instituted by me, and you bring my covenant to naught: 16 I also will do these things to you: I will visit you swiftly with want, and with fever that shall make your eyes fail and consume your souls. In vain you will sow your sowing, which will be devoured by enemies. 17 I will set my face against you, and you will fall before your enemies, and you will be subjected to those who hate you: you will flee, no one pursuing.
18 But if not even thus you will have obeyed me, I will add your chastisements sevenfold because of your sins, 19 and I will crush the pride of your obduracy. And I will give to you the heaven above like iron, and the land like bronze. 20 Your labor shall be consumed in vain; the land will not bring forth sprout, nor will the trees give fruit. 21 If you walk contrary to me, and are unwilling to listen to me, I will add your plagues sevenfold because of your sins: 22 and I will send among you the beasts of the field, which shall consume you and your cattle, and will reduce all things to paucity, and your roads shall become deserted. 23 But if not even thus you are willing to receive discipline, but you walk contrary to me: 24 I also will go against you, walking contrary, and I will strike you seven times for your sins, 25 and I will bring upon you a sword avenging my covenant.
And when you have fled into the cities, I will send pestilence into your midst, and you will be handed over into the hands of enemies, 26 after I have broken the staff of your bread: so that ten women will bake your bread in one oven, and they will return it by weight: and you will eat, and not be satisfied.
27 Sin autem nec per hæc audieritis me, sed ambulaveritis contra me: 28 et ego incedam adversus vos in furore contrario, et corripiam vos septem plagis propter peccata vestra: 29 ita ut comedatis carnes filiorum vestrorum et filiarum vestrarum. 30 Destruam excelsa vestra, et simulacra confringam. Cadetis inter ruinas idolorum vestrorum, et abominabitur vos anima mea, 31 in tantum ut urbes vestras redigam in solitudinem, et deserta faciam sanctuaria vestra, nec recipiam ultra odorem suavissimum.
27 But if not even through these things you will have heard me, but you will have walked against me: 28 I too will go against you in contrary fury, and I will chastise you with seven plagues on account of your sins: 29 so that you will eat the flesh of your sons and of your daughters. 30 I will destroy your high places, and I will shatter your simulacra. You will fall among the ruins of your idols, and my soul will abominate you, 31 to such an extent that I will reduce your cities to desolation, and I will make your sanctuaries deserted, nor will I any longer receive the most sweet odor.
32 And I will destroy your land, and your enemies who dwell in it shall be astonished over it, when its inhabitants have been. 33 But you I will scatter among the nations, and I will unsheathe the sword after you, and your land shall be desert, and your cities torn down. 34 Then the land shall be pleased with its sabbaths all the days of its solitude: when you shall be 35 in a hostile land, it shall sabbatize, and it shall rest in the sabbaths of its solitude, because it did not rest in your sabbaths when you were dwelling in it. 36 And to those of you who remain I will give fear in their hearts in the regions of their enemies; the sound of a flying leaf will terrify them, and thus they will flee as from a sword: they will fall, with no one pursuing, 37 and each will stumble over his brother, as if fleeing wars; none of you will dare to resist enemies. 38 You will perish among the nations, and the enemy land will consume you.
39 But if even of those some should remain, they will waste away in their iniquities, in the land of their enemies, and for the sins of their fathers and their own they will be afflicted: 40 until they confess their iniquities, and those of their elders, by which they have transgressed against me, and have walked contrary to me. 41 I therefore also will walk contrary to them, and I will bring them into a hostile land, until their uncircumcised mind is put to shame: then they will pray for their impieties.
42 Et recordabor fœderis mei, quod pepigi cum Jacob, et Isaac, et Abraham. Terræ quoque memor ero: 43 quæ cum relicta fuerit ab eis, complacebit sibi in sabbatis suis, patiens solitudinem propter illos. Ipsi vero rogabunt pro peccatis suis, eo quod abjecerint judicia mea, et leges meas despexerint.
42 And I will remember my covenant, which I covenanted with Jacob, and Isaac, and Abraham. I will also be mindful of the land: 43 which, when it shall have been left by them, will take pleasure in its Sabbaths, enduring solitude on account of them. But they themselves will pray for their sins, in that they have cast away my judgments, and have despised my laws.
44 And yet even when they were in a hostile land, I did not utterly cast them away, nor did I so despise them that they should be consumed, and that I should make my covenant with them void. For I am the Lord their God, 45 and I will remember my former covenant, when I brought them out of the land of Egypt in the sight of the nations, that I might be their God. I am the Lord.
Hæc sunt judicia atque præcepta et leges quas dedit Dominus inter se et filios Israël in monte Sinai per manum Moysi. 27 1 Locutusque est Dominus ad Moysen, dicens: 2 Loquere filiis Israël, et dices ad eos: Homo qui votum fecerit, et spoponderit Deo animam suam, sub æstimatione dabit pretium. 3 Si fuerit masculus a vigesimo anno usque ad sexagesimum annum, dabit quinquaginta siclos argenti ad mensuram sanctuarii: 4 si mulier, triginta.
These are the judgments and the precepts and the laws which the Lord gave between himself and the sons of Israel on Mount Sinai by the hand of Moses. 27 1 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 2 Speak to the sons of Israel, and you shall say to them: A man who has made a vow, and has pledged to God his soul, shall give the price under estimation. 3 If he be male from the twentieth year up to the sixtieth year, he shall give fifty shekels of silver by the measure of the sanctuary: 4 if a woman, thirty.
9 Animal autem, quod immolari potest Domino, si quis voverit, sanctum erit, 10 et mutari non poterit, id est, nec melius malo, nec pejus bono: quod si mutaverit, et ipsum quod mutatum est, et illud pro quo mutatum est, consecratum erit Domino. 11 Animal immundum, quod immolari Domino non potest, si quis voverit, adducetur ante sacerdotem: 12 qui judicans utrum bonum an malum sit, statuet pretium. 13 Quod si dare voluerit is qui offert, addet supra æstimationem quintam partem.
9 But an animal, which can be immolated to the Lord, if anyone vows it, shall be holy, 10 and it cannot be changed, that is, neither better for worse, nor worse for better; but if he should change it, both that which has been changed, and that for which it has been changed, shall be consecrated to the Lord. 11 An unclean animal, which cannot be immolated to the Lord, if anyone vows it, shall be brought before the priest: 12 who, judging whether it be good or bad, shall set the price. 13 But if the one who offers should wish to give, he shall add above the estimation the fifth part.
14 Homo si voverit domum suam, et sanctificaverit Domino, considerabit eam sacerdos utrum bona an mala sit, et juxta pretium, quod ab eo fuerit constitutum, venundabitur: 15 sin autem ille qui voverat, voluerit redimere eam, dabit quintam partem æstimationis supra, et habebit domum. 16 Quod si agrum possessionis suæ voverit, et consecraverit Domino, juxta mensuram sementis æstimabitur pretium: si triginta modiis hordei seritur terra, quinquaginta siclis venundetur argenti. 17 Si statim ab anno incipientis jubilæi voverit agrum, quanto valere potest, tanto æstimabitur.
14 If a man shall have vowed his house, and sanctified it to the Lord, the priest will consider it whether it be good or bad, and according to the price which shall have been fixed by him, it shall be sold: 15 but if he who had vowed shall wish to redeem it, he shall give a fifth part above the estimation, and he shall have the house. 16 But if he shall have vowed a field of his possession, and consecrated it to the Lord, according to the measure of sowing the price shall be estimated: if land is sown with thirty modii of barley, let it be sold for fifty shekels of silver. 17 If he shall vow the field immediately from the year of the commencing Jubilee, it shall be estimated at as much as it can be worth.
18 But if, however, after some time, the priest will compute the money according to the number of years that remain up to the Jubilee, and it shall be deducted from the price. 19 But if he who had vowed should wish to redeem the field, he shall add a fifth part of the estimated money, and shall possess it. 20 But if he should not wish to redeem, but it has been sold to any other, he who had vowed it will no longer be able to redeem it.
21 Because when the day of the Jubilee shall have come, it will be sanctified to the Lord, and the consecrated possession pertains by right to the priests. 22 If a field has been bought, and has not been sanctified to the Lord from the ancestral possession, 23 the priest shall compute, according to the number of years up to the Jubilee, the price: and he who vowed it shall give it to the Lord. 24 But in the Jubilee it shall return to the former master, who had sold it, and had had it in the lot of his possession. 25 Every valuation shall be weighed by the shekel of the sanctuary.
26 Primogenita, quæ ad Dominum pertinent, nemo sanctificare poterit et vovere: sive bos, sive ovis fuerit, Domini sunt. 27 Quod si immundum est animal, redimet qui obtulit, juxta æstimationem tuam, et addet quintam partem pretii: si redimere noluerit, vendetur alteri quantocumque a te fuerit æstimatum. 28 Omne quod Domino consecratur, sive homo fuerit, sive animal, sive ager, non vendetur, nec redimi poterit.
26 The firstborn, which pertain to the Lord, no one will be able to sanctify and to vow: whether it be an ox or a sheep, they are the Lord’s. 27 But if the animal is unclean, the one who offered it shall redeem it, according to your valuation, and shall add a fifth part of the price: if he is unwilling to redeem it, it shall be sold to another for whatever amount it has been valued by you. 28 Everything that is consecrated to the Lord, whether it be a human, or an animal, or a field, shall not be sold, nor can it be redeemed.
30 Omnes decimæ terræ, sive de frugibus, sive de pomis arborum, Domini sunt, et illi sanctificantur. 31 Si quis autem voluerit redimere decimas suas, addet quintam partem earum. 32 Omnium decimarum bovis et ovis et capræ, quæ sub pastoris virga transeunt, quidquid decimum venerit, sanctificabitur Domino.
30 All tithes of the land, whether from the produce or from the fruits of the trees, are the Lord’s, and they are sanctified to him. 31 But if anyone should wish to redeem his tithes, he shall add a fifth part of them. 32 Of all the tithes of the ox and the sheep and the goat, which pass under the shepherd’s rod, whatever comes tenth shall be sanctified to the Lord.
