2 et venit Anani unus de fratribus meis ipse et viri ex Iuda et interrogavi eos de Iudaeis qui remanserant et supererant de captivitate et de Hierusalem

2 and Anani, one of my brothers, came—he himself and men from Judah—and I questioned them about the Jews who had remained and survived from the captivity, and about Jerusalem.

3 et dixerunt mihi qui remanserunt et derelicti sunt de captivitate ibi in provincia in adflictione magna sunt et in obprobrio et murus Hierusalem dissipatus est et portae eius conbustae sunt igni

3 and they said to me, those who have remained and have been left from the captivity there in the province are in great affliction and in opprobrium, and the wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates have been burned with fire.

4 cumque audissem verba huiuscemodi sedi et flevi et luxi diebus et ieiunabam et orabam ante faciem Dei caeli

4 and when I heard words of this kind, I sat and wept and mourned for days, and I fasted and prayed before the face of the God of heaven

5 et dixi quaeso Domine Deus caeli fortis magne atque terribilis qui custodis pactum et misericordiam cum his qui te diligunt et custodiunt mandata tua

5 and I said: I beseech, Lord God of heaven, strong, great, and terrible, who keep the covenant and mercy with those who love you and keep your commandments

6 fiat auris tua auscultans et oculi tui aperti ut audias orationem servi tui quam ego oro coram te hodie nocte et die pro filiis Israhel servis tuis et confiteor pro peccatis filiorum Israhel quibus peccaverunt tibi et ego et domus patris mei peccavimus

6 let your ear be hearkening and your eyes open, that you may hear the prayer of your servant which I am praying before you today, by night and by day, for the sons of Israel, your servants; and I confess for the sins of the sons of Israel with which they have sinned against you—both I and my father’s house have sinned

7 vanitate seducti sumus et non custodivimus mandatum et caerimonias et iudicia quae praecepisti Mosi servo tuo

7 we have been seduced by vanity, and we have not kept the mandate and the ceremonies and the judgments which you prescribed to Moses your servant

8 memento verbi quod mandasti Mosi famulo tuo dicens cum transgressi fueritis ego dispergam vos in populos

8 remember the word that you commanded to Moses your servant, saying, when you have transgressed I will scatter you among the peoples

9 et si revertamini ad me et custodiatis mandata mea et faciatis ea etiam si abducti fueritis ad extrema caeli inde congregabo vos et inducam in locum quem elegi ut habitaret nomen meum ibi

9 and if you return to me and keep my commandments and do them even if you should be carried off to the extremities of heaven from there I will gather you and I will bring you into the place which I have chosen that my name might dwell there

10 et ipsi servi tui et populus tuus quos redemisti in fortitudine tua magna et in manu tua valida

10 And they are your servants and your people, whom you have redeemed by your great power and by your strong hand.

11 obsecro Domine sit auris tua adtendens ad orationem servi tui et ad orationem servorum tuorum qui volunt timere nomen tuum et dirige servum tuum hodie et da ei misericordiam ante virum hunc ego enim eram pincerna regis

11 I beseech, O Lord, let your ear be attending to the prayer of your servant and to the prayer of your servants who are willing to fear your name; and direct your servant today, and grant him mercy before this man, for I was the king’s cupbearer.

1 factum est autem in mense nisan anno vicesimo Artarxersis regis et vinum erat ante eum et levavi vinum et dedi regi et non eram quasi languidus ante faciem eius

1 and it came to pass in the month Nisan, in the 20th year of King Artaxerxes, and wine was before him, and I lifted the wine and gave it to the king, and I was not as if languid before his face

2 dixitque mihi rex quare vultus tuus tristis cum te aegrotum non videam non est hoc frustra sed malum nescio quid in corde tuo est et timui valde ac nimis

2 and the king said to me, Why is your countenance sad, since I do not see you sick? This is not for nothing, but some evil I-know-not-what is in your heart; and I feared very greatly, indeed exceedingly.

3 et dixi regi rex in aeternum vive quare non maereat vultus meus quia civitas domus sepulchrorum patris mei deserta est et portae eius conbustae sunt igni

3 and I said to the king: king, live forever; why should my face not mourn, because the city, the house of the sepulchres of my father, is deserted, and its gates have been burned with fire

4 et ait mihi rex pro qua re postulas et oravi Deum caeli

4 and the king said to me, For what thing do you petition? and I prayed to the God of heaven

5 et dixi ad regem si videtur regi bonum et si placet servus tuus ante faciem tuam ut mittas me in Iudaeam ad civitatem sepulchri patris mei et aedificabo eam

5 and I said to the king, if it seems good to the king, and if your servant is pleasing before your face, that you send me into Judaea to the city of my father’s sepulcher, and I will build it

6 dixitque mihi rex et regina quae sedebat iuxta eum usque ad quod tempus erit iter tuum et quando reverteris et placuit ante vultum regis et misit me et constitui ei tempus

6 and the king said to me (and the queen who was sitting beside him), For how long will your journey be, and when will you return? And it pleased the king, and he sent me, and I set for him a time

7 et dixi regi si regi videtur bonum epistulas det mihi ad duces regionis trans Flumen ut transducant me donec veniam in Iudaeam

7 and I said to the king, If it seems good to the king, let letters be given me to the governors of the region Beyond the River, that they may conduct me until I come into Judea.

8 et epistulam ad Asaph custodem saltus regis ut det mihi ligna et tegere possim portas turris domus et muri civitatis et domum quam ingressus fuero et dedit mihi rex iuxta manum Dei mei bonam mecum

8 and a letter to Asaph, the custodian of the king’s forest, that he may give me timber, so that I may cover/beam the gates of the tower of the house and the wall of the city, and the house which I shall enter; and the king granted to me according to the good hand of my God upon me.

9 et veni ad duces regionis trans Flumen dedique eis epistulas regis miserat autem mecum rex principes militum et equites

9 and I came to the governors of the region beyond the River and I gave them the letters of the king; moreover the king had sent with me officers of the soldiery and horsemen

10 et audierunt Sanaballat Horonites et Tobias servus ammanites et contristati sunt adflictione magna quod venisset homo qui quaereret prosperitatem filiorum Israhel

10 and Sanballat the Horonite and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, heard, and they were saddened with great affliction that a man had come who was seeking the prosperity of the sons of Israel

11 et veni Hierusalem et eram ibi diebus tribus

11 and I came to Jerusalem and was there for three days

12 et surrexi nocte ego et viri pauci mecum et non indicavi cuiquam quid Deus dedisset in corde meo ut facerem in Hierusalem et iumentum non erat mecum nisi animal cui sedebam

12 and I arose at night, I and a few men with me, and I did not indicate to anyone what God had given into my heart to do in Jerusalem; and there was no beast of burden with me except the animal on which I was sitting

13 et egressus sum per portam Vallis nocte et ante fontem Draconis et ad portam Stercoris et considerabam murum Hierusalem dissipatum et portas eius consumptas igni

13 and I went out through the Gate of the Valley by night and before the Fountain of the Dragon and to the Dung Gate and I was considering the wall of Jerusalem laid waste and its gates consumed by fire

14 et transivi ad portam Fontis et ad aquaeductum Regis et non erat locus iumento cui sedebam ut transiret

14 and I passed on to the Gate of the Fountain and to the King’s aqueduct, and there was no place for the beast of burden on which I was sitting to pass.

15 et ascendi per torrentem nocte et considerabam murum et reversus veni ad portam Vallis et redii

15 and I went up by the torrent at night and I was considering the wall and, having turned back, I came to the Gate of the Valley and I returned

16 magistratus autem nesciebant quo abissem aut quid ego facerem sed et Iudaeis et sacerdotibus et optimatibus et magistratibus et reliquis qui faciebant opus usque ad id locorum nihil indicaveram

16 but the magistrates did not know where I had gone or what I was doing, and to the Jews and the priests and the optimates and the magistrates and the rest who were doing the work I had up to that point disclosed nothing

17 et dixi eis vos nostis adflictionem in qua sumus quia Hierusalem deserta est et portae eius consumptae sunt igni venite et aedificemus muros Hierusalem et non simus ultra obprobrium

17 and I said to them, you know the affliction in which we are, because Jerusalem is desolate and its gates have been consumed by fire; come, and let us build the walls of Jerusalem, and let us no longer be an opprobrium

18 et indicavi eis manum Dei mei quod esset bona mecum et verba regis quae locutus est mihi et aio surgamus et aedificemus et confortatae sunt manus eorum in bono

18 and I indicated to them the hand of my God, that it had been good with me, and the words of the king which he had spoken to me, and I said, let us arise and build; and their hands were fortified for good.

19 audierunt autem Sanaballat Horonites et Tobias servus ammanites et Gosem Arabs et subsannaverunt nos et despexerunt dixeruntque quae est haec res quam facitis numquid contra regem vos rebellatis

19 But Sanballat the Horonite and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, and Geshem the Arab heard, and they mocked us and despised us and said, What is this thing that you are doing? Are you rebelling against the king?

20 et reddidi eis sermonem dixique ad eos Deus caeli ipse nos iuvat et nos servi eius sumus surgamus et aedificemus vobis autem non est pars et iustitia et memoria in Hierusalem

20 and I returned them an answer and said to them: The God of heaven, he himself helps us, and we are his servants; let us arise and build; but for you there is no part, or right, or memorial in Jerusalem.

1 et surrexit Eliasib sacerdos magnus et fratres eius sacerdotes et aedificaverunt portam Gregis ipsi sanctificaverunt eam et statuerunt valvas eius et usque ad turrem centum cubitorum sanctificaverunt eam usque ad turrem Ananehel

1 and Eliashib the high priest arose, and his brothers the priests, and they built the Sheep Gate; they sanctified it and set up its doors, and as far as the tower of a hundred cubits they sanctified it, as far as the tower of Hananel.

2 et iuxta eum aedificaverunt viri Hiericho et iuxta eum aedificavit Zecchur filius Amri

2 and next to him the men of Jericho built and next to him Zecchur son of Amri built

3 portam autem Piscium aedificaverunt filii Asanaa ipsi texerunt eam et statuerunt valvas eius et seras et vectes et iuxta eos aedificavit Marimuth filius Uriae filii Accus

3 but the Fish Gate was built by the sons of Asanaa; they laid its beams and set up its doors, its bolts, and its bars; and next to them Marimuth son of Uriah, son of Accus, built.

4 et iuxta eos aedificavit Mosollam filius Barachiae filii Mesezebel et iuxta eos aedificavit Sadoc filius Baana

4 and next to them Mosollam son of Barachiah, son of Mesezebel, built; and next to them Sadoc son of Baana built

5 et iuxta eos aedificaverunt Thecueni optimates autem eorum non subposuerunt colla sua in opere Domini sui

5 and next to them the Tekoites built; but their nobles did not put their necks to the work of their Lord.

6 et portam Veterem aedificaverunt Ioiada filius Fasea et Mosollam filius Besodia ipsi texerunt eam et statuerunt valvas eius et seras et vectes

6 and the Old Gate were built by Joiada son of Paseah and Meshullam son of Besodeiah; they roofed it and set up its doors and bolts and bars

7 et iuxta eos aedificavit Meletias Gabaonites et Iadon Meronathites viri de Gabaon et Maspha pro duce qui erat in regione trans Flumen

7 and next to them built Meletias the Gabaonite and Iadon the Meronathite, men of Gabaon and Maspha, for the governor who was in the region beyond the River

8 et iuxta eum aedificavit Ezihel filius Araia aurifex et iuxta eum aedificavit Anania filius pigmentarii et dimiserunt Hierusalem usque ad murum plateae latioris

8 and next to him Ezihel, son of Araia, a goldsmith, built; and next to him Anania, son of the perfumer, built; and they repaired Jerusalem up to the wall of the broader street.

9 et iuxta eum aedificavit Rafaia filius Ahur princeps vici Hierusalem

9 and next to him built Rephaiah, son of Hur, prince of the district of Jerusalem

10 et iuxta eos aedificavit Ieiada filius Aromath contra domum suam et iuxta eum aedificavit Attus filius Asebeniae

10 and next to them Jedaiah son of Aromath built opposite his own house, and next to him Attus son of Asebeniah built

11 mediam partem vici aedificavit Melchias filius Erem et Asub filius Phaethmoab et turrem Furnorum

11 Melchias son of Erem, and Asub son of Phaethmoab, built the middle part of the quarter, and the Tower of the Ovens.

12 iuxta eum aedificavit Sellum filius Alloes princeps mediae partis vici Hierusalem ipse et filiae eius

12 next to him Sellum, son of Alloes, chief of the middle part of the district of Jerusalem, built, he himself and his daughters

13 et portam Vallis aedificavit Anun et habitatores Zanoe ipsi aedificaverunt eam et statuerunt valvas eius et seras et vectes et mille cubitos in muro usque ad portam Sterquilinii

13 and the Gate of the Valley was built by Anun and the inhabitants of Zanoe; they themselves built it and set up its valves and its locks and bars, and a thousand cubits on the wall up to the Dung Gate

14 et portam Sterquilinii aedificavit Melchias filius Rechab princeps vici Bethaccharem ipse aedificavit eam et statuit valvas eius et seras et vectes

14 and the Dung Gate was built by Melchias son of Rechab, chief of the district of Beth-haccherem; he himself built it and set up its doors and locks and bars

15 et portam Fontis aedificavit Sellum filius Choloozai princeps pagi Maspha ipse aedificavit eam et texit et statuit valvas eius et seras et vectes et muros piscinae Siloae in hortum regis et usque ad gradus qui descendunt de civitate David

15 and the Gate of the Fountain was built by Sellum son of Choloozai, chief of the district of Maspha; he himself built it and roofed it, and set its doors and its bolts and bars, and the walls of the Pool of Siloah toward the king’s garden, and as far as the steps that go down from the City of David

16 post eum aedificavit Neemias filius Azboc princeps dimidiae partis vici Bethsur usque contra sepulchra David et usque ad piscinam quae grandi opere constructa est et usque ad domum Fortium

16 after him Neemias son of Azboc, prince of the half of the district of Bethsur, built, up to opposite the sepulchres of David, and up to the pool which is constructed with great workmanship, and up to the House of the Mighty.

17 post eum aedificaverunt Levitae Reum filius Benni post eum aedificavit Asebias princeps dimidiae partis vici Ceilae in vico suo

17 after him the Levites built—Reum son of Benni; after him Asebias, chief of the half of the district of Ceila, built in his district

18 post eum aedificaverunt fratres eorum Behui filius Enadad princeps dimidiae partis Ceila

18 after him their brothers built, Behui son of Enadad, chief of half of Ceila

19 et aedificavit iuxta eum Azer filius Iosue princeps Maspha mensuram secundam contra ascensum firmissimi anguli

19 and next to him Azer son of Josue, prince of Maspha, built the second measure opposite the ascent of the most fortified corner

20 post eum in monte aedificavit Baruch filius Zacchai mensuram secundam ab angulo usque ad portam domus Eliasib sacerdotis magni

20 after him, on the hill, Baruch son of Zacchai built the second measure from the corner up to the gate of the house of Eliasib the high priest

21 post eum aedificavit Meremuth filius Uriae filii Accus mensuram secundam a porta domus Eliasib donec extenderetur domus Eliasib

21 after him Meremuth son of Uriah son of Accus built the second measure from the gate of the house of Eliasib until the house of Eliasib was extended

22 et post eum aedificaverunt sacerdotes viri de campestribus Iordanis

22 and after him the priests, men from the plains of the Jordan, built

23 post eum aedificavit Beniamin et Asub contra domum suam et post eum aedificavit Azarias filius Maasiae filii Ananiae contra domum suam

23 after him Benjamin and Hashub built opposite their house, and after him Azariah son of Maaseiah, son of Ananiah, built opposite his house

24 post eum aedificavit Bennui filius Enadda mensuram secundam a domo Azariae usque ad flexuram et usque ad angulum

24 after him Bennui son of Enadda built the second measure from the house of Azariah up to the bend, and up to the corner

25 Falel filius Ozi contra flexuram et turrem quae eminet de domo regis excelsa id est in atrio carceris post eum Phadaia filius Pheros

25 Falel son of Ozi opposite the flexure and the tower which projects from the king’s high house, that is, in the atrium of the prison; after him Phadaia son of Pheros

26 Nathinnei autem habitabant in Ofel usque contra portam Aquarum ad orientem et turrem quae prominebat

26 But the Nethinim were dwelling in Ophel up to opposite the Water Gate to the east and the tower that projected.

27 post eum aedificaverunt Thecueni mensuram secundam e regione a turre magna et eminenti usque ad murum templi

27 after him the Tekoites built a second measure opposite, from the great and eminent tower as far as the wall of the temple

28 sursum autem a porta Equorum aedificaverunt sacerdotes unusquisque contra domum suam

28 above, moreover, from the Horse Gate the priests built, each opposite his own house

29 post eos aedificavit Seddo filius Emmer contra domum suam et post eum aedificavit Semeia filius Secheniae custos portae orientalis

29 after them Seddo son of Emmer built opposite his house, and after him Semeia son of Secheniah, custodian of the East Gate, built

30 post eum aedificavit Anania filius Selemiae et Anon filius Selo sextus mensuram secundam post eum aedificavit Mosollam filius Barachiae contra gazofilacium suum post eum aedificavit Melchias filius aurificis usque ad domum Nathinneorum et scruta vendentium contra portam Iudicialem et usque ad cenaculum Anguli

30 after him Ananiah son of Shelemiah built, and Hanun son of Selo, the sixth, a second measure; after him Meshullam son of Berechiah built opposite his treasury-chamber; after him Melchiah son of the goldsmith built up to the house of the Nethinim and of the sellers of wares, opposite the Judicial Gate, and up to the upper room of the Angle

31 et inter cenaculum Anguli in porta Gregis aedificaverunt artifices et negotiatores

31 and between the upper chamber of the Angle and the Sheep Gate the artificers and the merchants built

1 factum est autem cum audisset Sanaballat quod aedificaremus murum iratus est valde et motus nimis subsannavit Iudaeos

1 And it came to pass that, when Sanballat heard that we were building the wall, he was very angry and exceedingly moved, and he mocked the Judaeans.

2 et dixit coram fratribus suis et frequentia Samaritanorum quid Iudaei inbecilli faciunt num dimittent eos gentes num sacrificabunt et conplebunt in una die numquid aedificare poterunt lapides de acervis pulveris qui conbusti sunt

2 and he said before his brothers and the throng of the Samaritans: What are these feeble Jews doing? Will the nations let them alone? Will they sacrifice? And will they complete it in one day? Surely will they be able to build the stones out of heaps of dust that have been burned?

3 sed et Tobias Ammanites proximus eius ait aedificent si ascenderit vulpis transiliet murum eorum lapideum

3 but even Tobiah the Ammonite, his neighbor, said: let them build; if a fox ascends, it will leap over their stone-built wall.

4 audi Deus noster quia facti sumus despectio converte obprobrium super caput eorum et da eos in despectionem in terra captivitatis

4 hear, our God, because we have been made a despised thing; turn reproach upon their head, and give them into contempt in a land of captivity

5 ne operias iniquitatem eorum et peccatum eorum coram facie tua non deleatur quia inriserunt aedificantes

5 do not cover their iniquity and let not their sin be blotted out before your face because they mocked the builders

6 itaque aedificavimus murum et coniunximus totum usque ad partem dimidiam et provocatum est cor populi ad operandum

6 therefore we built the wall, and we conjoined the whole even to the half part, and the heart of the people was stirred to work

7 factum est autem cum audisset Sanaballat et Tobias et Arabes et Ammanitae et Azotii quod obducta esset cicatrix muri Hierusalem et quod coepissent interrupta concludi irati sunt nimis

7 now it came to pass that when Sanballat and Tobiah and the Arabs and the Ammonites and the Ashdodites heard that the cicatrix of the wall of Jerusalem had been drawn over, and that the breaches had begun to be closed, they were exceedingly angry.

8 et congregati omnes pariter ut venirent et pugnarent contra Hierusalem et molirentur insidias

8 and they were all gathered together to come and fight against Jerusalem and to contrive ambushes

9 et oravimus Deum nostrum et posuimus custodes super murum die et nocte contra eos

9 and we prayed to our God, and we set guards upon the wall by day and by night against them

10 dixit autem Iudas debilitata est fortitudo portantis et humus nimia est et nos non poterimus aedificare murum

10 however Judah said: the fortitude of the bearer is debilitated, and the earth is excessive, and we shall not be able to build the wall

11 et dixerunt hostes nostri nesciant et ignorent donec veniamus in medio eorum et interficiamus eos et cessare faciamus opus

11 and our enemies said, let them not know and be ignorant until we come into their midst and kill them and make the work cease

12 factum est autem venientibus Iudaeis qui habitabant iuxta eos et dicentibus nobis per decem vices ex omnibus locis quibus venerant ad nos

12 and it came to pass, moreover, when the Jews who dwelt near them came and were saying to us ten times, from all the places whence they had come to us

13 statui in loco post murum per circuitum populum in ordine cum gladiis suis et lanceis et arcis

13 I stationed the people in the place behind the wall, all around, in array, with their swords and lances and bows.

14 perspexi atque surrexi et aio ad optimates et ad magistratus et ad reliquam partem vulgi nolite timere a facie eorum Domini magni et terribilis mementote et pugnate pro fratribus vestris filiis vestris et filiabus vestris uxoribus vestris et domibus

14 I looked over and rose up, and I say to the nobles and to the magistrates and to the remaining part of the common people: do not fear before their face; remember the great and terrible Lord, and fight for your brothers, your sons and your daughters, your wives, and your houses.

15 factum est autem cum audissent inimici nostri nuntiatum esse nobis dissipavit Deus consilium eorum et reversi sumus omnes ad muros unusquisque ad opus suum

15 and it came to pass that when our enemies heard that it had been announced to us, God dissipated their counsel, and we all returned to the walls, each one to his work

16 et factum est a die illa media pars iuvenum eorum faciebant opus et media parata erat ad bellum et lanceae et scuta et arcus et loricae et principes post eos in omni domo Iuda

16 and it came to pass from that day that half of their youths were doing the work, and half were prepared for war, with the lances and the shields and the bows and the cuirasses; and the princes were behind them, in all the house of Judah.

17 aedificantium in muro et portantium onera et inponentium una manu sua faciebat opus et altera tenebat gladium

17 of those building on the wall and of those carrying burdens and of those loading, with one hand each was doing the work and with the other he was holding the sword

18 aedificantium enim unusquisque gladio erat accinctus renes et aedificabant et clangebant bucina iuxta me

18 for of the builders each was girded with a sword at his loins, and they were building, and the trumpet was clanging beside me

19 et dixi ad optimates et ad magistratus et ad reliquam partem vulgi opus grande est et latum et nos separati sumus in muro procul alter ab altero

19 and I said to the optimates and to the magistrates and to the remaining part of the common people: the work is grand and broad, and we are separated on the wall, far, one from another

20 in loco quocumque audieritis clangorem tubae illuc concurrite ad nos Deus noster pugnabit pro nobis

20 in whatever place you hear the clangor of the trumpet, run together there to us; our God will fight for us.

21 et nos ipsi faciamus opus et media pars nostrum teneat lanceas ab ascensu aurorae donec egrediantur astra

21 and we ourselves will do the work, and half of us will hold lances from the rising of dawn until the stars come out

22 in tempore quoque illo dixi populo unusquisque cum puero suo maneat in medio Hierusalem et sint vobis vices per noctem et diem ad operandum

22 also at that time I said to the people: let each man remain with his boy in the midst of Jerusalem, and let there be for you watches by night and by day for working

23 ego autem et fratres mei et pueri mei et custodes qui erant post me non deponebamus vestimenta nostra unusquisque tantum nudabatur ad baptismum

23 But I and my brothers and my youths and the guards who were behind me did not put off our garments; each one only stripped for washing.

1 et factus est clamor populi et uxorum eius magnus adversus fratres suos iudaeos

1 And there was a great clamor of the people and their wives against their Jewish brothers.

2 et erant qui dicerent filii nostri et filiae nostrae multae sunt nimis accipiamus pro pretio eorum frumentum et comedamus et vivamus

2 and there were those who were saying, Our sons and our daughters are very many; let us take grain for their price, and let us eat and live

3 et erant qui dicerent agros nostros et vineas et domos nostras opponamus et accipiamus frumentum in fame

3 and there were those who said: let us pledge our fields and our vineyards and our houses, and let us take grain in the famine

4 et alii dicebant mutuo sumamus pecunias in tributa regis demusque agros nostros et vineas

4 and others were saying: let us take monies on loan for the king’s tribute, and let us give our fields and vineyards.

5 and now, as the flesh of our brothers, so is our flesh; as their sons, so our sons. Behold, we are subjugating our sons and our daughters into servitude, and of our daughters there are maidservants; and we do not have whence they can be redeemed, and our fields and our vineyards others possess

6 and I was exceedingly irate when I heard their clamor according to these words

7 and my heart considered within me, and I rebuked the optimates and the magistrates, and I said to them: Are you each exacting usury from your brothers? And I gathered a great assembly against them.

8 et dixi eis nos ut scitis redemimus fratres nostros iudaeos qui venditi fuerant gentibus secundum possibilitatem nostram et vos igitur vendite fratres vestros et emimus eos et siluerunt nec invenerunt quid responderent

8 and I said to them, We, as you know, have redeemed our Judaean brothers who had been sold to the nations according to our possibility, and you therefore sell your brothers, and shall we buy them? and they were silent and found nothing to answer

9 dixique ad eos non est bona res quam facitis quare non in timore Dei nostri ambulatis ne exprobretur nobis a gentibus inimicis nostris

9 and I said to them: the thing which you are doing is not good; why do you not walk in the fear of our God, lest we be reproached by the nations, our enemies?

10 et ego et fratres mei et pueri mei commodavimus plurimis pecuniam et frumentum non repetamus in commune istud aes alienum concedamus quod debetur nobis

10 I too, and my brothers and my servants, have lent to many money and grain; let us not exact it back—let us, in common, remit this debt, what is owed to us.

11 reddite eis hodie agros suos vineas suas oliveta sua et domos suas quin potius et centesimam pecuniae frumenti vini et olei quam exigere soletis ab eis date pro illis

11 restore to them today their fields, their vineyards, their oliveyards, and their houses; nay rather, also the hundredth of the money, grain, wine, and oil which you are accustomed to exact from them, give back to them

16 nay rather, in the work of the wall I built, and I did not buy a field, and all my servants were gathered for the work

17 Iudaei quoque et magistratus centum quinquaginta viri et qui veniebant ad nos de gentibus quae in circuitu nostro sunt in mensa mea erant

17 Also the Jews and the magistrates, one hundred and fifty men, and those who were coming to us from the nations which are around us, were at my table.

18 parabatur autem mihi per dies singulos bos unus arietes sex electi exceptis volatilibus et inter dies decem vina diversa et alia multa tribuebam insuper et annonas ducatus mei non quaesivi valde enim erat adtenuatus populus

18 and was being prepared for me each single day one ox, six chosen rams, besides the fowls; and at intervals of ten days, various wines; and many other things I was apportioning besides; moreover I did not seek the rations of my governorship, for the people was greatly attenuated

19 remember me, my God, for good, according to all that I have done for this people

1 Now it came to pass, when Sanballat and Tobiah and Geshem the Arab and the rest of our enemies heard that I had built the wall, and that there was no remaining breach in it—though up to that time I had not set the doors in the gates—

2 miserunt Sanaballat et Gosem ad me dicentes veni et percutiamus foedus pariter in viculis in campo Ono ipsi autem cogitabant ut facerent mihi malum

2 Sanaballat and Gosem sent to me, saying: Come, and let us strike a covenant together in the villages in the plain of Ono; but they were plotting to do me harm.

3 therefore I sent messengers to them, saying, A great work I am doing, and I cannot descend, lest perhaps it be neglected when I shall have come and descended to you

4 However, they sent to me according to this word four times, and I replied to them according to the prior message.

5 et misit ad me Sanaballat iuxta verbum prius quinta vice puerum suum et epistulam habebat in manu scriptam hoc modo

5 and Sanballat sent to me according to the former word, a fifth time, his servant, and he had in his hand a letter written in this manner

6 in gentibus auditum est et Gosem dixit quod tu et Iudaei cogitetis rebellare et propterea aedifices murum et levare te velis super eos regem propter quam causam

6 it has been heard among the nations, and Gosem has said it, that you and the Jews are thinking to rebel, and therefore you are building the wall, and you wish to elevate yourself as king over them for this cause

7 et prophetas posueris qui praedicent de te in Hierusalem dicentes rex in Iudaea est auditurus est rex verba haec idcirco nunc veni ut ineamus consilium pariter

7 and you have set up prophets who proclaim about you in Jerusalem, saying, “A king is in Judea”; the king will hear these words; therefore now come, that we may enter into counsel together

8 et misi ad eos dicens non est factum secundum verba haec quae tu loqueris de corde enim tuo tu conponis haec

8 and I sent to them saying it has not been done according to these words which you speak for from your own heart you compose these things

9 omnes autem hii terrebant nos cogitantes quod cessarent manus nostrae ab opere et quiesceremus quam ob causam magis confortavi manus meas

9 but all these were terrifying us, thinking that our hands would cease from the work and that we would grow quiet; for which cause I fortified my hands all the more

10 and I entered the house of Shemaiah son of Delaiah, son of Mehetabel, in secret, who said, Let us take counsel together in the house of God, in the midst of the temple, and let us shut the doors of the temple, for they are coming to slay you, and by night they are coming to kill you.

11 et dixi num quisquam similis mei fugit et quis ut ego ingredietur templum et vivet non ingrediar

11 and I said, does anyone like me flee? and who, like me, would enter the temple and live? I will not enter.

12 et intellexi quod Deus non misisset eum sed quasi vaticinans locutus esset ad me et Tobia et Sanaballat conduxissent eum

12 and I understood that God had not sent him, but that he had spoken to me as if prophesying, and that Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him

13 acceperat enim pretium ut territus facerem et peccarem et haberent malum quod exprobrarent mihi

13 for he had received a price, in order that, terrified, I might act and sin, and that they might have an evil thing to reproach me with

16 therefore it came to pass, when all our enemies had heard, that all the nations who were around us were afraid, and collapsed within themselves, and knew that this work had been done by God

17 but also in those days many epistles of the nobles of the Jews were being sent to Tobiah, and from Tobiah they were coming to them

1 And the seventh month had come; but the sons of Israel were in their cities, and all the people was gathered as if one man at the square that is before the Water Gate, and they said to Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses, which the Lord commanded Israel.

5 and Ezra opened the book before all the people—for he was indeed above the whole people—and when he opened it, all the people stood.

8 et legerunt in libro legis Dei distincte et adposite ad intellegendum et intellexerunt cum legeretur

8 and they read in the book of the law of God distinctly, and suitably for understanding, and they understood when it was being read

9 dixit autem Neemias ipse est Athersatha et Ezras sacerdos scriba et Levitae interpretantes universo populo dies sanctificatus est Domino Deo nostro nolite lugere et nolite flere flebat enim omnis populus cum audiret verba legis

9 but Nehemiah—he is the Athersatha—and Ezra the priest, the scribe, and the Levites who were interpreting, said to all the people: This day is sanctified to the Lord our God; do not mourn and do not weep, for all the people were weeping when they heard the words of the law.

10 and he said to them, Go, eat the rich things and drink mulsum, and send portions to him who has not prepared for himself, for the day of the Lord is holy; and do not be grieved, for the joy of the Lord is our strength.

11 Levitae autem silentium faciebant in omni populo dicentes tacete quia dies sanctus est et nolite dolere

11 But the Levites were making silence among all the people, saying, Be silent, for the day is holy, and do not grieve.

12 abiit itaque omnis populus ut comederet et biberet et mitteret partes et faceret laetitiam magnam quia intellexerant verba quae docuerat eos

12 so all the people went away to eat and to drink and to send portions and to make great rejoicing, because they had understood the words which he had taught them

13 et in die secundo congregati sunt principes familiarum universi populi sacerdotes et Levitae ad Ezram scribam ut interpretaretur eis verba legis

13 and on the second day the chiefs of the families of all the people, the priests and the Levites, were gathered to Ezra the scribe, that he might interpret for them the words of the law

14 et invenerunt scriptum in lege praecepisse Dominum in manu Mosi ut habitent filii Israhel in tabernaculis in die sollemni mense septimo

14 and they found written in the law that the Lord had commanded by the hand of Moses that the sons of Israel should dwell in tabernacles on the solemn day, in the seventh month

15 et ut praedicent et divulgent vocem in universis urbibus suis et in Hierusalem dicentes egredimini in montem et adferte frondes olivae et frondes ligni pulcherrimi frondes myrti et ramos palmarum et frondes ligni nemorosi ut fiant tabernacula sicut scriptum est

15 and that they should proclaim and publish the voice in all their cities and in Jerusalem, saying, go out to the mountain and bring fronds of olive, and fronds of the most beautiful tree, fronds of myrtle, and branches of palms, and fronds of the grove-tree, that tabernacles may be made, as it is written

16 et egressus est populus et adtulerunt feceruntque sibi tabernacula unusquisque in domate suo et in atriis suis et in atriis domus Dei et in platea portae Aquarum et in platea portae Ephraim

16 and the people went out and they brought and made for themselves tabernacles, each on his housetop and in his courts and in the courts of the house of God and in the square of the Water Gate and in the square of the Gate of Ephraim

17 fecit ergo universa ecclesia eorum qui redierant de captivitate tabernacula et habitaverunt in tabernaculis non enim fecerant a diebus Iosue filii Nun taliter filii Israhel usque ad diem illum et fuit laetitia magna nimis

17 therefore the entire ecclesia of those who had returned from captivity made tabernacles, and they dwelt in tabernacles; for the sons of Israel had not done thus from the days of Joshua the son of Nun until that day; and there was exceedingly great joy.

18 but he read in the book of the law of God day by day from the first day until the last day, and they kept the solemnity for seven days, and on the eighth day a convocation according to the rite

1 and on the twenty-fourth day of this month the sons of Israel convened in fasting and in sackcloth, and earth upon them

2 and the seed of the sons of Israel was separated from every alien-born son, and they stood and were confessing their sins and the iniquities of their fathers

3 et consurrexerunt ad standum et legerunt in volumine legis Domini Dei sui quater in die et quater confitebantur et adorabant Dominum Deum suum

3 and they arose to stand, and they read in the volume of the Law of the Lord their God for a fourth of the day, and for a fourth they were confessing and adoring the Lord their God

5 and the Levites Iosue and Cedmihel, Bonni, Asebia, Serebia, Odoia, Sebna, Fataia said: rise up, bless the Lord your God from everlasting unto everlasting; and let them bless the name of your glory, exalted above all blessing and praise

6 tu ipse Domine solus tu fecisti caelum caelum caelorum et omnem exercitum eorum terram et universa quae in ea sunt maria et omnia quae in eis sunt et tu vivificas omnia haec et exercitus caeli te adorat

6 you yourself, Lord, alone; you made heaven, the heaven of heavens, and all their host, the earth and all things which are in it, the seas and all things which are in them, and you vivify all these, and the host of heaven adores you

7 tu ipse Domine Deus qui elegisti Abram et eduxisti eum de igne Chaldeorum et posuisti nomen eius Abraham

7 you yourself, Lord God, who chose Abram and led him out from the fire of the Chaldeans, and you set his name Abraham

8 and you found his heart faithful before you, and you struck a covenant with him to give him the land of the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite, and the Perizzite, and the Jebusite, and the Girgashite, to give it to his seed, and you fulfilled your words, because you are just

9 et vidisti adflictionem patrum nostrorum in Aegypto clamoremque eorum audisti super mare Rubrum

9 and you saw the affliction of our fathers in Egypt, and you heard their clamor at the Red Sea

10 et dedisti signa et portenta in Pharao et in universis servis eius et in omni populo terrae illius cognovisti enim quia superbe egerant contra eos et fecisti tibi nomen sicut et in hac die

10 and you gave signs and portents against Pharaoh and against all his servants and against all the people of his land, for you knew that they had acted arrogantly against them, and you made a name for yourself, as also on this day.

11 et mare divisisti ante eos et transierunt per medium maris in sicca persecutores autem eorum proiecisti in profundum quasi lapidem in aquas validas

11 and you divided the sea before them, and they passed through the midst of the sea on dry ground; but their persecutors you cast into the deep like a stone into mighty waters

12 et in columna nubis ductor eorum fuisti per diem et in columna ignis per noctem ut appareret eis via per quam ingrediebantur

12 and in a pillar of cloud you were their leader by day, and in a pillar of fire by night, so that the way by which they were going might appear to them

16 ipsi vero et patres nostri superbe egerunt et induraverunt cervices suas et non audierunt mandata tua

16 but they themselves and our fathers acted arrogantly and hardened their necks and did not listen to your commandments

17 et noluerunt audire et non sunt recordati mirabilium tuorum quae feceras eis et induraverunt cervices suas et dederunt caput ut converterentur ad servitutem suam quasi per contentionem tu autem Deus propitius clemens et misericors longanimis et multae miserationis non dereliquisti eos

17 and they were unwilling to hear and did not remember your marvels which you had done for them, and they hardened their necks and gave a head so that they might turn back to their servitude, as if by contention; but you, God propitious, clement and merciful, longanimous and of many compassions, did not forsake them

18 and indeed when they had made for themselves a molten calf and had said, This is your God who brought you out of Egypt, they committed great blasphemies

19 tu autem in misericordiis tuis multis non dimisisti eos in deserto columna nubis non recessit ab eis per diem ut duceret eos in via et columna ignis in nocte ut ostenderet eis iter per quod ingrederentur

19 but you, in your many mercies, did not abandon them in the desert; the column of cloud did not withdraw from them by day to lead them on the way, and the column of fire by night to show them the route by which they should go.

20 et spiritum tuum bonum dedisti qui doceret eos et manna tuum non prohibuisti ab ore eorum et aquam dedisti eis in siti

20 and you gave your good spirit who would teach them, and you did not withhold your manna from their mouth, and you gave them water in thirst

21 quadraginta annis pavisti eos in deserto nihilque eis defuit vestimenta eorum non inveteraverunt et pedes eorum non sunt adtriti

21 for forty years you fed them in the desert, and nothing failed them; their garments did not grow old, and their feet were not worn out

24 and the sons came and possessed the land, and you humbled before them the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, and you gave them into their hand—both their kings and the peoples of the land—that they might do to them as it pleased them.

25 ceperunt itaque urbes munitas et humum pinguem et possederunt domos plenas cunctis bonis cisternas ab aliis fabricatas vineas et oliveta et ligna pomifera multa et comederunt et saturati sunt et inpinguati sunt et abundavere deliciis in bonitate tua magna

25 they therefore took fortified cities and fat soil, and possessed houses filled with all good things, cisterns fabricated by others, vineyards and olive groves and many fruit-bearing trees; and they ate and were satisfied and grew fat, and they abounded in delights in your great goodness.

26 provocaverunt autem te ad iracundiam et recesserunt a te et proiecerunt legem tuam post terga sua et prophetas tuos occiderunt qui contestabantur eos ut reverterentur ad te feceruntque blasphemias grandes

26 but they provoked you to wrath and withdrew from you, and they cast your law behind their backs, and they killed your prophets who were testifying against them that they should return to you, and they committed great blasphemies.

27 et dedisti eos in manu hostium suorum et adflixerunt eos et in tempore tribulationis suae clamaverunt ad te et tu de caelo audisti et secundum miserationes tuas multas dedisti eis salvatores qui salvaverunt eos de manu hostium suorum

27 and you gave them into the hand of their enemies, and they afflicted them; and in the time of their tribulation they cried to you, and you heard from heaven; and according to your many mercies you gave them saviors who saved them from the hand of their enemies

28 cumque requievissent reversi sunt ut facerent malum in conspectu tuo et dereliquisti eos in manu inimicorum suorum et possederunt eos conversique sunt et clamaverunt ad te tu autem de caelo audisti et liberasti eos in misericordiis tuis multis temporibus

28 and when they had found rest, they turned back to do evil in your sight, and you deserted them into the hand of their enemies, and they possessed them; and they turned and cried to you, and you from heaven heard and liberated them in your mercies many times

29 et contestatus es eos ut reverterentur ad legem tuam ipsi vero superbe egerunt et non audierunt mandata tua et in iudiciis tuis peccaverunt quae faciet homo et vivet in eis et dederunt umerum recedentem et cervicem suam induraverunt nec audierunt

29 And you testified to them that they should return to your law; but they acted arrogantly and did not listen to your commandments, and they sinned against your judgments—which if a man does, he shall live in them—and they gave a withdrawing shoulder and hardened their neck, and they did not listen.

30 et protraxisti super eos annos multos et contestatus es eos in spiritu tuo per manum prophetarum tuorum et non audierunt et tradidisti eos in manu populorum terrarum

30 and you prolonged over them many years, and you testified against them in your spirit by the hand of your prophets; but they did not hear, and you handed them over into the hand of the peoples of the lands

31 in misericordiis autem tuis plurimis non fecisti eos in consumptione nec dereliquisti eos quoniam Deus miserationum et clemens tu es

31 yet in your very many mercies you did not make them a consumption, nor did you abandon them, for you are a God of compassions and clement

32 nunc itaque Deus noster Deus magne fortis et terribilis custodiens pactum et misericordiam ne avertas a facie tua omnem laborem qui invenit nos reges nostros principes nostros et sacerdotes nostros prophetas nostros et patres nostros et omnem populum tuum a diebus regis Assur usque in diem hanc

32 now therefore our God, great, strong, and terrible, keeping the covenant and mercy, do not avert from your face all the hardship which has found us—our kings, our princes, and our priests, our prophets and our fathers, and all your people—from the days of the king of Assur up to this day

33 et tu iustus in omnibus quae venerunt super nos quia veritatem fecisti nos autem impie egimus

33 and you are just in all the things that have come upon us, because you have done truth, but we have acted impiously

34 reges nostri principes nostri sacerdotes nostri et patres nostri non fecerunt legem tuam et non adtenderunt mandata tua et testimonia tua quae testificatus es in eis

34 our kings, our princes, our priests, and our fathers did not observe your law and did not attend to your mandates and your testimonies which you testified against them

35 et ipsi in regnis suis bonis et in bonitate tua multa quam dederas eis et in terra latissima et pingui quam tradideras in conspectu eorum non servierunt tibi nec reversi sunt ab studiis suis pessimis

35 and they, in their own kingdoms, in the good things and in your much goodness which you had given to them, and in the very broad and fat land which you had delivered before them, did not serve you nor did they turn back from their most wicked pursuits

36 ecce nos ipsi hodie servi sumus et terram quam dedisti patribus nostris ut comederent panem eius et quae bona sunt eius et nos ipsi servi sumus in ea

36 Behold, we ourselves today are slaves, and the land which you gave to our fathers that they might eat its bread and its good things, we ourselves are slaves in it.

37 et fruges eius multiplicantur regibus quos posuisti super nos propter peccata nostra et in corporibus nostris dominantur et in iumentis nostris secundum voluntatem suam et in tribulatione magna sumus

37 and its produce is multiplied to the kings whom you set over us on account of our sins, and they dominate over our bodies and over our beasts of burden according to their will, and we are in great tribulation

38 super omnibus ergo his nos ipsi percutimus foedus et scribimus et signant principes nostri Levitae nostri et sacerdotes nostri

38 therefore, over all these things, we ourselves strike a covenant and write it, and our princes, our Levites, and our priests sign it

34 therefore we cast lots concerning the oblation of wood among the priests and the Levites and the people, that it be brought into the house of our God by the houses of our fathers, at times appointed, year by year, so that they might burn upon the altar of the Lord our God, as it is written in the law of Moses

35 and that we would bring the firstborn of our land, and the firstfruits of all the fruit of every tree, from year to year, into the house of the Lord

37 et primitias ciborum nostrorum et libaminum nostrorum et poma omnis ligni vindemiae quoque et olei adferemus sacerdotibus ad gazofilacium Dei nostri et decimam partem terrae nostrae Levitis ipsi Levitae decimas accipient ex omnibus civitatibus operum nostrorum

37 and the firstfruits of our foods and of our libations, and the fruit of every tree, likewise of the vintage and of the oil, we will bring to the priests to the treasury of our God; and the tenth part (tithe) of our land to the Levites—the Levites themselves shall receive tithes in all the cities of our labor.

38 erit autem sacerdos filius Aaron cum Levitis in decimis Levitarum et Levitae offerent decimam partem decimae suae in domum Dei nostri ad gazofilacium in domo thesauri

38 and the priest, a son of Aaron, shall be with the Levites in the tithes of the Levites; and the Levites shall offer a tenth part of their tithe in the house of our God, to the treasury-chamber, in the house of the treasury.

39 ad gazofilacium enim deportabunt filii Israhel et filii Levi primitias frumenti vini et olei et ibi erunt vasa sanctificata et sacerdotes et cantores et ianitores et ministri et non dimittemus domum Dei nostri

39 for to the treasury the sons of Israel and the sons of Levi will bring the first-fruits of grain, wine, and oil, and there will be the sanctified vessels, and the priests and the singers and the doorkeepers and the ministers, and we will not neglect the house of our God

1 Now the leaders of the people dwelt in Jerusalem, but the remaining plebeians cast lots to take one part out of ten who would dwell in Jerusalem, in the holy city, but nine parts in the cities.

43 they also appointed on that day men over the treasury store‑chambers for the libations and for the first‑fruits and for the tithes, so that through them the princes of the city might bring in, in the decorum of thanksgiving, for the priests and the Levites, because Judah rejoiced in the priests and in the Levites standing by.

44 et custodierunt observationem Dei sui et observationem expiationis et cantores et ianitores iuxta praeceptum David et Salomonis filii eius

44 and they kept the observance of their God and the observance of expiation, and the singers and the doorkeepers, according to the precept of David and Solomon his son

45 quia in diebus David et Asaph ab exordio erant principes constituti cantorum in carmine laudantium et confitentium Deo

45 because in the days of David and Asaph, from the outset, there were leaders appointed of the singers, in song praising and confessing to God

1 on that day it was read in the volume of Moses, in the hearing of the people, and it was found written in it that the Ammonites and the Moabites ought not to enter into the church of God unto eternity

2 eo quod non occurrerint filiis Israhel cum pane et aqua et conduxerint adversum eum Balaam ad maledicendum ei et convertit Deus noster maledictionem in benedictionem

2 because they did not meet the sons of Israel with bread and water, and they hired Balaam against him to maledict him; and our God converted the malediction into benediction.

3 factum est autem cum audissent legem separaverunt omnem alienigenam ab Israhel

3 and it came to pass that, when they had heard the law, they separated every alien-born from Israel

4 et super hoc erat Eliasib sacerdos qui fuerat positus in gazofilacio domus Dei nostri et proximus Tobiae

4 And before this, Eliashib the priest, who had been appointed over the gazophylacium of the house of our God, was a near kinsman to Tobiah.

5 fecit ergo sibi gazofilacium grande et ibi erant ante eum reponentes munera et tus et vasa et decimam frumenti et vini et olei partes Levitarum et cantorum et ianitorum et primitias sacerdotales

5 therefore he made for himself a great treasury, and there before this they were depositing the offerings and the incense and the vessels and the tithe of grain and of wine and of oil, the portions of the Levites and the singers and the gatekeepers, and the priestly first-fruits

6 in omnibus autem his non fui in Hierusalem quia in anno tricesimo secundo Artarxersis regis Babylonis veni ad regem et in fine dierum rogavi regem

6 but in all these things I was not in Jerusalem, because in the 32nd year of Artaxerxes, king of Babylon, I came to the king, and at the end of some days I asked leave from the king

7 et veni in Hierusalem et intellexi malum quod fecerat Eliasib Tobiae ut faceret ei thesaurum in vestibulis domus Dei

7 and I came into Jerusalem, and I understood the evil which Eliashib had done for Tobiah, to make for him a treasury in the vestibules of the house of God

8 et malum mihi visum est valde et proieci vasa domus Tobiae foras de gazofilacio

8 and it seemed very evil to me, and I cast forth the vessels of the house of Tobiah outside from the treasury.

9 praecepique et mundaverunt gazofilacia et rettuli ibi vasa domus Dei sacrificium et tus

9 and I commanded, and they cleansed the treasure-chambers, and I brought back there the vessels of the house of God, the sacrifice and the incense

10 et cognovi quoniam partes Levitarum non fuissent datae et fugisset unusquisque in regionem suam de Levitis et de cantoribus et de his qui ministrabant

10 and I came to know that the portions of the Levites had not been given, and that each one had fled to his own region, of the Levites and of the singers and of those who ministered

11 et egi causam adversus magistratus et dixi quare dereliquimus domum Dei et congregavi eos et feci stare in stationibus suis

11 and I brought suit against the magistrates and said, Why have we forsaken the house of God? and I congregated them and made them stand in their stations.

12 et omnis Iuda adportabat decimam frumenti et vini et olei in horrea

12 and all Judah was bringing the tithe of grain and wine and oil into the storehouses

13 et constituimus super horrea Selemiam sacerdotem et Sadoc scribam et Phadaiam de Levitis et iuxta eos Anan filium Zacchur filium Matthaniae quoniam fideles conprobati sunt et ipsis creditae sunt partes fratrum suorum

13 and we appointed over the storehouses Shelemiah the priest and Zadok the scribe and Pedaiah of the Levites, and alongside them Hanan son of Zaccur, son of Mattaniah, because they were proven faithful, and to them were entrusted the portions of their brothers.

14 memento mei Deus meus pro hoc et ne deleas miserationes meas quas feci in domo Dei mei et in caerimoniis eius

14 remember me, my God, for this, and do not blot out my acts of compassion which I have done in the house of my God and in its ceremonies

15 in diebus illis vidi in Iuda calcabant torcularia in sabbato portantes acervos et onerantes super asinos vinum et uvas et ficus et omne onus et inferentes Hierusalem in die sabbati et contestatus sum ut in die qua vendere liceret venderent

15 in those days I saw in Judah they were treading winepresses on the Sabbath, carrying heaps and loading upon donkeys wine and grapes and figs and every burden, and bringing them into Jerusalem on the Sabbath day; and I testified, that on the day when it should be permitted to sell, they should sell.

16 et Tyrii habitaverunt in ea inferentes pisces et omnia venalia et vendebant in sabbatis filiis Iuda et in Hierusalem

16 and the Tyrians dwelt in it, bringing in fish and all vendibles, and they were selling on the Sabbaths to the sons of Judah and in Jerusalem

17 et obiurgavi optimates Iuda et dixi eis quae est res haec mala quam vos facitis et profanatis diem sabbati

17 and I rebuked the nobles of Judah and said to them: What is this evil thing that you are doing, and profaning the day of the Sabbath?

18 numquid non haec fecerunt patres nostri et adduxit Deus noster super nos omne malum hoc et super civitatem hanc et vos additis iracundiam super Israhel violando sabbatum

18 Did not our fathers do these things, and did not our God bring upon us all this evil and upon this city? And you are adding wrath upon Israel by violating the sabbath.

19 factum est itaque cum quievissent portae Hierusalem die sabbati dixi et cluserunt ianuas et praecepi ut non aperirent eas usque post sabbatum et de pueris meis constitui super portas ut nullus inferret onus in die sabbati

19 And it came to pass, therefore, when the gates of Jerusalem had rested on the sabbath day, I said, and they shut the doors; and I commanded that they should not open them until after the sabbath, and of my servants I stationed over the gates, that no one might bring in a burden on the sabbath day.

20 et manserunt negotiatores et vendentes universa venalia foris Hierusalem semel et bis

20 and the merchants and vendors of all merchandise lodged outside Jerusalem once and twice

21 et contestatus sum eos et dixi eis quare manetis ex adverso muri si secundo hoc feceritis manum mittam in vos itaque ex tempore illo non venerunt in sabbato

21 and I protested to them and said to them: Why do you remain opposite the wall? If you do this a second time, I will lay hand upon you. And so from that time they did not come on the sabbath.

22 dixi quoque Levitis ut mundarentur et venirent ad custodiendas portas et sanctificandum diem sabbati et pro hoc ergo memento mei Deus meus et parce mihi secundum multitudinem miserationum tuarum

22 I also said to the Levites to purify themselves and to come to guard the gates and to sanctify the day of the sabbath; and for this, therefore, remember me, my God, and spare me according to the multitude of your mercies.

23 sed et in diebus illis vidi Iudaeos ducentes uxores azotias ammanitidas et moabitidas

23 but also in those days I saw Jews taking wives—Azotian, Ammonite, and Moabite women.

24 et filii eorum ex media parte loquebantur azotice et nesciebant loqui iudaice et loquebantur iuxta linguam populi et populi

24 and their sons, in part, were speaking Azotic, and they did not know how to speak Judaean, and they were speaking according to the tongue of the people and the people

25 et obiurgavi eos et maledixi et cecidi ex ipsis viros et decalvavi eos et adiuravi in Deo ut non darent filias suas filiis eorum et non acciperent de filiabus eorum filiis suis et sibimet ipsis dicens

25 and I rebuked them and I cursed them and I struck men from among them and I made them bald, and I adjured by God that they should not give their daughters to their sons and should not take from their daughters for their sons and for themselves, saying

26 numquid non in huiuscemodi re peccavit Salomon rex Israhel et certe in gentibus multis non erat rex similis ei et dilectus Deo suo erat et posuit eum Deus regem super omnem Israhel et ipsum ergo ad peccatum duxerunt mulieres alienigenae

26 Did not Solomon, king of Israel, sin in a matter of this kind? And surely among many nations there was no king similar to him, and he was beloved by his God, and God placed him as king over all Israel; and yet foreign women led even him into sin.

27 numquid et nos inoboedientes faciemus omne malum grande hoc ut praevaricemur in Deo nostro et ducamus uxores peregrinas

27 shall we also, being disobedient, do all this great evil, to transgress against our God and take foreign wives

28 de filiis autem Ioiada filii Eliasib sacerdotis magni gener erat Sanaballat Horonitis quem fugavi a me

28 but of the sons of Joiada, son of Eliashib the high priest, there was one who was son-in-law to Sanballat the Horonite, whom I drove away from me

29 recordare Domine Deus meus adversum eos qui polluunt sacerdotium iusque sacerdotale et leviticum

29 remember, O Lord my God, against those who pollute the priesthood, and the sacerdotal and Levitical right

30 igitur mundavi eos ab omnibus alienigenis et constitui ordines sacerdotum et Levitarum unumquemque in ministerio suo

30 therefore I cleansed them from all foreigners, and I constituted the orders of the priests and of the Levites, each in his ministry

31 et in oblatione lignorum in temporibus constitutis et in primitiis memento mei Deus meus in bonum

31 and in the oblation of wood at the appointed times, and in the first-fruits; remember me, my God, for good.
