1 1 Et factum est post mortem Moysi servi Domini, ut loqueretur Dominus ad Josue filium Nun, ministrum Moysi, et diceret ei: 2 Moyses servus meus mortuus est: surge, et transi Jordanem istum tu, et omnis populus tecum, in terram quam ego dabo filiis Israël. 3 Omnem locum, quem calcaverit vestigium pedis vestri, vobis tradam, sicut locutus sum Moysi. 4 A deserto et Libano usque ad fluvium magnum Euphraten, omnis terra Hethæorum usque ad mare magnum contra solis occasum erit terminus vester. 5 Nullus poterit vobis resistere cunctis diebus vitæ tuæ: sicut fui cum Moyse, ita ero tecum: non dimittam, nec derelinquam te. 6 Confortare, et esto robustus: tu enim sorte divides populo huic terram, pro qua juravi patribus suis, ut traderem eam illis.

1 1 And it came to pass after the death of Moses, the servant of the Lord, that the Lord spoke to Joshua, son of Nun, the minister of Moses, and said to him: 2 Moses my servant is dead: arise, and cross this Jordan, you and all the people with you, into the land that I will give to the sons of Israel. 3 Every place which the footprint of your foot shall tread, I will hand over to you, just as I spoke to Moses. 4 From the desert and Lebanon as far as the great river, the Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites as far as the great sea toward the setting of the sun shall be your boundary. 5 No one will be able to resist you all the days of your life: just as I was with Moses, so will I be with you: I will not leave, nor will I abandon you. 6 Be strengthened, and be robust: for you by lot will divide to this people the land, for which I swore to their fathers, that I would hand it over to them.

7 Confortare igitur, et esto robustus valde, ut custodias, et facias omnem legem, quam præcepit tibi Moyses servus meus: ne declines ab ea ad dexteram vel ad sinistram, ut intelligas cuncta quæ agis. 8 Non recedat volumen legis hujus ab ore tuo: sed meditaberis in eo diebus ac noctibus, ut custodias et facias omnia quæ scripta sunt in eo: tunc diriges viam tuam, et intelliges eam. 9 Ecce præcipio tibi: confortare, et esto robustus.

7 Therefore be strengthened,
and be very robust, that you may keep and do the whole law
which Moses my servant commanded you: do not turn aside from it to the right hand
or to the left, that you may understand all that you do. 8 Let not the volume
of this law depart from your mouth: but you shall meditate on it by days and nights,
that you may keep and do all that is written in it: then you will direct your way,
and you will understand it. 9 Behold I command you: be strengthened, and be robust.

Noli metuere, et noli timere: quoniam tecum est Dominus Deus tuus in omnibus ad quæcumque perrexeris.

Do not fear, and do not be afraid: for the Lord God is with you
in all things wherever you shall go.

10 Præcepitque Josue principibus populi, dicens: Transite per medium castrorum, et imperate populo, ac dicite: 11 Præparate vobis cibaria: quoniam post diem tertium transibitis Jordanem, et intrabitis ad possidendam terram quam Dominus Deus vester daturus est vobis. 12 Rubenitis quoque et Gaditis, et dimidiæ tribui Manasse, ait: 13 Mementote sermonis, quem præcepit vobis Moyses famulus Domini, dicens: Dominus Deus vester dedit vobis requiem, et omnem terram. 14 Uxores vestræ, et filii, ac jumenta manebunt in terra, quam tradidit vobis Moyses trans Jordanem: vos autem transite armati ante fratres vestros, omnes fortes manu, et pugnate pro eis, 15 donec det Dominus requiem fratribus vestris sicut et vobis dedit, et possideant ipsi quoque terram quam Dominus Deus vester daturus est eis: et sic revertimini in terram possessionis vestræ, et habitabitis in ea, quam vobis dedit Moyses famulus Domini trans Jordanem contra solis ortum.

10 And Joshua commanded the princes of the people, saying: Pass through the midst
of the camp, and command the people, and say: 11 Prepare for yourselves provisions;
for after the third day you shall cross the Jordan, and you shall enter to
possess the land which the Lord your God is going to give to you. 12
And to the Reubenites and the Gadites, and to the half-tribe of Manasseh, he said: 13
Remember the word which Moses the servant of the Lord commanded you, saying:
The Lord your God has given you rest, and all the land. 14 Your wives,
and your sons, and your beasts of burden shall remain in the land which Moses gave to you
beyond the Jordan; but you, cross over armed before your brothers,
all mighty men of valor, and fight for them, 15 until the Lord gives rest to your
brothers as he gave to you, and they also possess the land
which the Lord your God will give to them; and so return to the land
of your possession, and you shall dwell in it, which Moses
the servant of the Lord gave to you beyond the Jordan toward the rising of the sun.

16 Responderuntque ad Josue, atque dixerunt: Omnia quæ præcepisti nobis, faciemus: et quocumque miseris, ibimus. 17 Sicut obedivimus in cunctis Moysi, ita obediemus et tibi: tantum sit Dominus Deus tuus tecum, sicut fuit cum Moyse. 18 Qui contradixerit ori tuo, et non obedierit cunctis sermonibus, quos præceperis ei, moriatur.

16 And they answered Joshua and said: All that you have commanded us, we will do; and wherever you may send us, we will go. 17 As we obeyed in all things Moses, so will we obey you: only may the Lord your God be with you, as he was with Moses. 18 Whoever shall contradict your mouth, and does not obey all the words which you shall command him, let him die.

Tu tantum confortare, et viriliter age. 2 1 Misit igitur Josue filius Nun de Setim duos viros exploratores in abscondito: et dixit eis: Ite, et considerate terram, urbemque Jericho. Qui pergentes ingressi sunt domum mulieris meretricis, nomine Rahab, et quieverunt apud eam.

You only be strengthened, and act manfully. 2 1 Therefore Joshua son of Nun sent from Setim two men, explorers, in secret; and he said to them: Go, and consider the land, and the city Jericho. They, proceeding, entered the house of a woman, a prostitute, named Rahab, and lodged with her.

2 Nuntiatumque est regi Jericho, et dictum: Ecce viri ingressi sunt huc per noctem de filiis Israël, ut explorarent terram. 3 Misitque rex Jericho ad Rahab, dicens: Educ viros, qui venerunt ad te, et ingressi sunt domum tuam: exploratores quippe sunt, et omnem terram considerare venerunt. 4 Tollensque mulier viros, abscondit, et ait: Fateor, venerunt ad me, sed nesciebam unde essent: 5 cumque porta clauderetur in tenebris, et illi pariter exierunt ; nescio quo abierunt: persequimini cito, et comprehendetis eos.

2 And it was announced to the king of Jericho, and said: Behold, men have entered here
by night from the sons of Israel, to explore the land. 3 And the king
of Jericho sent to Rahab, saying: Bring out the men who came to you, and entered
your house: for they are explorers, and they have come to consider the whole land.
4 And the woman, taking the men, hid them, and said: I admit,
they came to me, but I did not know whence they were: 5 and when the gate was being closed
in the darkness, they too went out together ; I do not know where they went:
pursue quickly, and you will apprehend them.

6 Ipsa autem fecit ascendere viros in solarium domus suæ, operuitque eos stipula lini, quæ ibi erat. 7 Hi autem, qui missi fuerant, secuti sunt eos per viam, quæ ducit ad vadum Jordanis: illisque egressis statim porta clausa est.

6 But she herself made the men go up to the roof of her house, and covered them with stalks of flax, which were there. 7 But those who had been sent pursued them by the way that leads to the ford of the Jordan; and when they had gone out, the gate was immediately shut.

8 Necdum obdormierant qui latebant, et ecce mulier ascendit ad eos, et ait: 9 Novi quod Dominus tradiderit vobis terram: etenim irruit in nos terror vester, et elanguerunt omnes habitatores terræ. 10 Audivimus quod siccaverit Dominus aquas maris Rubri ad vestrum introitum, quando egressi estis ex Ægypto: et quæ feceritis duobus Amorrhæorum regibus, qui erant trans Jordanem, Sehon et Og, quos interfecistis. 11 Et hæc audientes pertimuimus, et elanguit cor nostrum, nec remansit in nobis spiritus ad introitum vestrum: Dominus enim Deus vester ipse est Deus in cælo sursum et in terra deorsum. 12 Nunc ergo jurate mihi per Dominum, ut quomodo ego misericordiam feci vobiscum, ita et vos faciatis cum domo patris mei: detisque mihi verum signum, 13 ut salvetis patrem meum et matrem, et fratres ac sorores meas, et omnia quæ illorum sunt, et eruatis animas nostras a morte.

8 Not yet had they fallen asleep, who were hiding, and behold the woman went up to them, and
said: 9 I know that the Lord has delivered to you the land; for your terror has rushed upon us,
and all the inhabitants of the land have languished. 10 We have heard that the Lord dried up the
waters of the Red Sea at your entrance, when you went out from Egypt; and what you did to the two
kings of the Amorrites, who were beyond the Jordan, Sehon and Og, whom you slew. 11 And hearing
these things we were afraid, and our heart languished, nor did spirit remain in us at your entrance:
for the Lord your God, he himself is God in heaven above and on earth below. 12 Now therefore swear
to me by the Lord, that just as I have done mercy with you, so you also will do with my father’s house;
and give me a true sign, 13 that you will save my father and mother, and my brothers and my sisters,
and all that are theirs, and you will deliver our souls from death.

14 Qui responderunt ei: Anima nostra sit pro vobis in mortem, si tamen non prodideris nos: cumque tradiderit nobis Dominus terram, faciemus in te misericordiam et veritatem. 15 Demisit ergo eos per funem de fenestra: domus enim ejus hærebat muro. 16 Dixitque ad eos: Ad montana conscendite, ne forte occurrant vobis revertentes: ibique latitate tribus diebus, donec redeant, et sic ibitis per viam vestram.

14 Who answered her: Our soul shall be for you unto death, if indeed you do not betray us; and when the Lord shall have delivered to us the land, we will do toward you mercy and truth. 15 Therefore she let them down by a rope from the window; for her house adhered to the wall. 16 And she said to them: Ascend to the mountains, lest perhaps they who are returning may meet you in their return; and there lie hidden for three days, until they return, and thus you will go by your way.

17 Qui dixerunt ad eam: Innoxii erimus a juramento hoc, quo adjurasti nos: 18 si ingredientibus nobis terram, signum fuerit funiculus iste coccineus, et ligaveris eum in fenestra, per quam demisisti nos: et patrem tuum ac matrem, fratresque et omnem cognationem tuam congregaveris in domum tuam. 19 Qui ostium domus tuæ egressus fuerit, sanguis ipsius erit in caput ejus, et nos erimus alieni. Cunctorum autem sanguis, qui tecum in domo fuerint, redundabit in caput nostrum, si eos aliquis tetigerit.

17 Who said to her: We shall be guiltless from this oath by which you have adjured us: 18 if, as we are entering the land, this scarlet cord shall be the sign, and you tie it in the window by which you let us down; and you gather your father and mother, and your brothers and your whole kindred into your house. 19 Whoever shall go out of the door of your house, his blood shall be upon his head, and we shall be guiltless. But the blood of all who will be with you in the house shall redound upon our head, if anyone touches them.

20 Quod si nos prodere volueris, et sermonem istum proferre in medium, erimus mundi ab hoc juramento, quo adjurasti nos. 21 Et illa respondit: Sicut locuti estis, ita fiat: dimittensque eos ut pergerent, appendit funiculum coccineum in fenestra.

20 But if you should wish to betray us,
and to bring this word into the open, we shall be clear from this
oath with which you adjured us. 21 And she replied: As you have spoken,
so let it be; and, dismissing them to go on their way, she hung a scarlet cord
in the window.

22 Illi vero ambulantes pervenerunt ad montana, et manserunt ibi tres dies, donec reverterentur qui fuerant persecuti: quærentes enim per omnem viam, non repererunt eos. 23 Quibus urbem ingressis, reversi sunt, et descenderunt exploratores de monte: et, transmisso Jordane, venerunt ad Josue filium Nun, narraveruntque ei omnia quæ acciderant sibi, 24 atque dixerunt: Tradidit Dominus omnem terram hanc in manus nostras, et timore prostrati sunt cuncti habitatores ejus. 3 1 Igitur Josue de nocte consurgens movit castra: egredientesque de Setim, venerunt ad Jordanem ipse et omnes filii Israël, et morati sunt ibi tres dies.

22 But they, walking, reached the mountains, and stayed there three days, until those who had been pursuing returned; for, searching along the whole road, they did not find them. 23 When these had entered the city, they returned, and the explorers came down from the mountain; and, the Jordan having been crossed, they came to Joshua son of Nun, and they told him all that had happened to them, 24 and they said: The Lord has delivered all this land into our hands, and all its inhabitants are prostrated with fear. 3 1 Therefore Joshua, rising by night, moved the camp; and going out from Shittim, he and all the sons of Israel came to the Jordan, and they stayed there three days.

2 Quibus evolutis transierunt præcones per castrorum medium, 3 et clamare cœperunt: Quando videritis arcam fœderis Domini Dei vestri, et sacerdotes stirpis Leviticæ portantes eam, vos quoque consurgite, et sequimini præcedentes: 4 sitque inter vos et arcam spatium cubitorum duum millium: ut procul videre possitis, et nosse per quam viam ingrediamini: quia prius non ambulastis per eam: et cavete ne appropinquetis ad arcam. 5 Dixitque Josue ad populum: Sanctificamini: cras enim faciet Dominus inter vos mirabilia. 6 Et ait ad sacerdotes: Tollite arcam fœderis, et præcedite populum.

2 When these had elapsed, the heralds passed through the midst of the camp, 3 and began to cry out: When you see the Ark of the Covenant of the Lord your God, and the priests of Levitical stock carrying it, you also rise up, and follow, as it goes before: 4 and let there be between you and the Ark a space of 2,000 cubits: so that you may see from afar, and know by which way you shall go: for you have not walked by it before: and beware lest you draw near to the Ark. 5 And Joshua said to the people: Sanctify yourselves: for tomorrow the Lord will do wonders among you. 6 And he said to the priests: Take up the Ark of the Covenant, and go before the people.

Qui jussa complentes, tulerunt, et ambulaverunt ante eos. 7 Dixitque Dominus ad Josue: Hodie incipiam exaltare te coram omni Israël: ut sciant quod sicut cum Moyse fui, ita et tecum sim. 8 Tu autem præcipe sacerdotibus, qui portant arcam fœderis, et dic eis: Cum ingressi fueritis partem aquæ Jordanis, state in ea. 9 Dixitque Josue ad filios Israël: Accedite huc, et audite verbum Domini Dei vestri.

Who, fulfilling the orders,
took it up, and walked before them. 7 And the Lord said to Joshua: Today
I will begin to exalt you before all Israel, so that they may know that just as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. 8 But you, command the priests who carry the ark of the covenant, and say to them: When you have entered the part of the waters of the Jordan, stand in it. 9 And Joshua said to the sons of Israel: Come near here, and hear the word of the Lord your God.

10 Et rursum: In hoc, inquit, scietis quod Dominus Deus vivens in medio vestri est, et disperdet in conspectu vestro Chananæum et Hethæum, Hevæum et Pherezæum, Gergesæum quoque et Jebusæum, et Amorrhæum. 11 Ecce arca fœderis Domini omnis terræ antecedet vos per Jordanem. 12 Parate duodecim viros de tribubus Israël, singulos per singulas tribus. 13 Et cum posuerint vestigia pedum suorum sacerdotes qui portant arcam Domini Dei universæ terræ in aquis Jordanis, aquæ quæ inferiores sunt, decurrent atque deficient: quæ autem desuper veniunt, in una mole consistent.

10 And again: In this, he says, you will know that
the living Lord God is in the midst of you, and he will destroy in the sight
of you the Canaanite and the Hittite, the Hivite and the Perizzite, the Girgashite also and
the Jebusite, and the Amorite. 11 Behold, the ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth
will go before you through the Jordan. 12 Prepare twelve men from the tribes of Israel,
one man from each tribe. 13 And when the priests who carry the ark of the Lord God of all the earth have set the steps of their feet
in the waters of the Jordan, the waters which are lower will run down and fail; but those which come from above will stand together in one mass.

14 Igitur egressus est populus de tabernaculis suis, ut transiret Jordanem: et sacerdotes, qui portabant arcam fœderis, pergebant ante eum. 15 Ingressisque eis Jordanem, et pedibus eorum in parte aquæ tinctis (Jordanis autem ripas alvei sui tempore messis impleverat), 16 steterunt aquæ descendentes in loco uno, et ad instar montis intumescentes apparebant procul, ab urbe quæ vocatur Adom usque ad locum Sarthan: quæ autem inferiores erant, in mare Solitudinis (quod nunc vocatur Mortuum) descenderunt, usquequo omnino deficerent. 17 Populus autem incedebat contra Jericho: et sacerdotes qui portabant arcam fœderis Domini, stabant super siccam humum in medio Jordanis accincti, omnisque populus per arentem alveum transibat.

14 Therefore the people went out from their tabernacles, to cross the Jordan; and the priests, who were carrying the ark of the covenant, were going before him. 15 And when they had entered the Jordan, and their feet were dipped in part of the water (now the Jordan had filled the banks of its channel at the time of harvest), 16 the waters descending stood still in one place, and, swelling up like a mountain, appeared far off, from the city which is called Adam as far as the place Sarthan; but those which were lower went down into the Sea of Solitude (which is now called the Dead [Sea]) until they utterly failed. 17 But the people were marching toward Jericho; and the priests who were carrying the ark of the covenant of the Lord stood upon dry ground in the midst of the Jordan, girded, and all the people were crossing through the dry riverbed.

4 1 Quibus transgressis, dixit Dominus ad Josue: 2 Elige duodecim viros singulos per singulas tribus: 3 et præcipe eis ut tollant de medio Jordanis alveo, ubi steterunt pedes sacerdotum, duodecim durissimos lapides, quos ponetis in loco castrorum, ubi fixeritis hac nocte tentoria. 4 Vocavitque Josue duodecim viros, quos elegerat de filiis Israël, singulos de singulis tribubus, 5 et ait ad eos: Ite ante arcam Domini Dei vestri ad Jordanis medium, et portate inde singuli singulos lapides in humeris vestris, juxta numerum filiorum Israël, 6 ut sit signum inter vos: et quando interrogaverint vos filii vestri cras, dicentes: Quid sibi volunt isti lapides ? 7 respondebitis eis: Defecerunt aquæ Jordanis ante arcam fœderis Domini, cum transiret eum: idcirco positi sunt lapides isti in monimentum filiorum Israël usque in æternum. 8 Fecerunt ergo filii Israël sicut præcepit eis Josue, portantes de medio Jordanis alveo duodecim lapides, ut Dominus ei imperarat, juxta numerum filiorum Israël, usque ad locum in quo castrametati sunt, ibique posuerunt eos.

4 1 When these had crossed over, the Lord said to Joshua: 2 Choose twelve men, one apiece from each tribe; 3 and command them to take from the middle of the Jordan’s channel, where the feet of the priests stood, twelve very hard stones, which you shall set in the place of the camp where you will fix your tents this night. 4 And Joshua called twelve men, whom he had chosen from the sons of Israel, one from each tribe, 5 and he said to them: Go before the ark of the Lord your God to the middle of the Jordan, and carry from there each a single stone upon your shoulders, according to the number of the sons of Israel, 6 that it may be a sign among you; and when your sons ask you tomorrow, saying: What do these stones mean ? 7 you shall answer them: The waters of the Jordan failed before the ark of the covenant of the Lord, when it was passing through it; therefore these stones were set for a monument of the sons of Israel unto eternity. 8 So the sons of Israel did as Joshua commanded them, carrying from the midst of the Jordan’s channel twelve stones, as the Lord had commanded him, according to the number of the sons of Israel, up to the place in which they encamped, and there they set them.

9 Alios quoque duodecim lapides posuit Josue in medio Jordanis alveo, ubi steterunt sacerdotes qui portabant arcam fœderis: et sunt ibi usque in præsentem diem.

He also set up twelve other stones in the midst of the Jordan’s riverbed, where
the priests stood who were carrying the ark of the covenant; and they are there
to the present day.

10 Sacerdotes autem qui portabant arcam, stabant in Jordanis medio, donec omnia complerentur, quæ Josue, ut loqueretur ad populum, præceperat Dominus, et dixerat ei Moyses. Festinavitque populus, et transiit. 11 Cumque transissent omnes, transivit et arca Domini, sacerdotesque pergebant ante populum.

10 But the priests who were carrying the ark stood in the middle of the Jordan, until all was completed which the Lord had commanded Joshua to speak to the people, and which Moses had said to him. And the people hastened, and crossed over. 11 And when all had crossed over, the ark of the Lord also crossed over, and the priests were going on before the people.

12 Filii quoque Ruben, et Gad, et dimidia tribus Manasse, armati præcedebant filios Israël, sicut eis præceperat Moyses: 13 et quadraginta pugnatorum millia per turmas, et cuneos, incedebant per plana atque campestria urbis Jericho. 14 In die illo magnificavit Dominus Josue coram omni Israël, ut timerent eum, sicut timuerant Moysen, dum adviveret. 15 Dixitque ad eum: 16 Præcipe sacerdotibus, qui portant arcam fœderis, ut ascendant de Jordane.

12 The sons also of Reuben, and Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh, armed, were preceding the sons of Israel, as Moses had commanded them: 13 and forty thousand fighting men, by troops and wedge-formations, were marching through the plains and level fields of the city of Jericho. 14 On that day the Lord magnified Joshua before all Israel, so that they feared him, as they had feared Moses, while he was alive. 15 And he said to him: 16 Command the priests who bear the ark of the covenant, that they ascend from the Jordan.

17 Qui præcepit eis, dicens: Ascendite de Jordane. 18 Cumque ascendissent portantes arcam fœderis Domini, et siccam humum calcare cœpissent, reversæ sunt aquæ in alveum suum, et fluebant sicut ante consueverant.

commanded them, saying: Go up from the Jordan. 18 And when they had ascended,
bearing the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and had begun to tread the dry ground,
the waters returned into their own channel, and flowed as they had been accustomed before.

19 Populus autem ascendit de Jordane decimo die mensis primi, et castrametati sunt in Galgalis contra orientalem plagam urbis Jericho. 20 Duodecim quoque lapides, quos de Jordanis alveo sumpserant, posuit Josue in Galgalis, 21 et dixit ad filios Israël: Quando interrogaverint filii vestri cras patres suos, et dixerint eis: Quid sibi volunt lapides isti ? 22 docebitis eos, atque dicetis: Per arentem alveum transivit Israël Jordanem istum, 23 siccante Domino Deo vestro aquas ejus in conspectu vestro, donec transiretis, 24 sicut fecerat prius in mari Rubro, quod siccavit donec transiremus: 25 ut discant omnes terrarum populi fortissimam Domini manum, ut et vos timeatis Dominum Deum vestrum omni tempore. 5 1 Postquam ergo audierunt omnes reges Amorrhæorum, qui habitabant trans Jordanem ad occidentalem plagam, et cuncti reges Chanaan, qui propinqua possidebant magni maris loca, quod siccasset Dominus fluenta Jordanis coram filiis Israël donec transirent, dissolutum est cor eorum, et non remansit in eis spiritus, timentium introitum filiorum Israël.

19 But the people came up from the Jordan on the tenth day of the first month, and they encamped in Galgalis opposite the eastern quarter of the city of Jericho. 20 And the twelve stones also, which they had taken from the channel of the Jordan, Joshua set up in Galgalis, 21 and he said to the sons of Israel: When tomorrow your sons ask their fathers and say to them: What do these stones mean? 22 you shall teach them, and you shall say: Through the dry riverbed this Jordan Israel crossed, 23 with the Lord your God drying up its waters before your sight until you had crossed, 24 just as He had done before in the Red Sea, which He dried up until we crossed: 25 that all the peoples of the lands may learn the most mighty hand of the Lord, and that you also may fear the Lord your God at all times. 5 1 After therefore all the kings of the Amorites who were dwelling beyond the Jordan on the western side, and all the kings of Canaan who were possessing the places near the great sea, heard that the Lord had dried up the streams of the Jordan before the sons of Israel until they had crossed, their heart was dissolved, and no spirit remained in them, for fear of the entry of the sons of Israel.

2 Eo tempore ait Dominus ad Josue: Fac tibi cultros lapideos, et circumcide secundo filios Israël. 3 Fecit quod jusserat Dominus, et circumcidit filios Israël in colle præputiorum. 4 Hæc autem causa est secundæ circumcisionis: omnis populus, qui egressus est de Ægypto generis masculini, universi bellatores viri, mortui sunt in deserto per longissimos viæ circuitus, 5 qui omnes circumcisi erant. Populus autem qui natus est in deserto, 6 per quadraginta annos itineris latissimæ solitudinis incircumcisus fuit: donec consumerentur qui non audierant vocem Domini, et quibus ante juraverat ut non ostenderet eis terram lacte et melle manantem.

2 At that time the Lord said to Joshua: Make for yourself stone knives, and
circumcise the sons of Israel a second time. 3 He did what the Lord had commanded, and
he circumcised the sons of Israel on the hill of the foreskins. 4 Now this is the cause of
the second circumcision: all the people who came out of Egypt,
of the male sex, all the men of war, died in the desert through the very long circuits of the way, 5 who all had been circumcised. But the people
who were born in the desert, 6 during forty years of the journey in the very broad
wilderness, were uncircumcised, until those were consumed who had not hearkened
to the voice of the Lord, and to whom he had previously sworn that he would not show them the land
flowing with milk and honey.

7 Horum filii in locum successerunt patrum, et circumcisi sunt a Josue: quia sicut nati fuerant, in præputio erant, nec eos in via aliquis circumciderat. 8 Postquam autem omnes circumcisi sunt, manserunt in eodem castrorum loco, donec sanarentur. 9 Dixitque Dominus ad Josue: Hodie abstuli opprobrium Ægypti a vobis.

7 Their sons succeeded in the place of their fathers, and
were circumcised by Joshua: because, as they had been born, they were in the prepuce,
and no one on the way had circumcised them. 8 But after they had all been circumcised,
they stayed in the same place of the camp, until they were healed. 9 And the Lord said
to Joshua: Today I have taken away the reproach of Egypt from you.

Vocatumque est nomen loci illius Galgala, usque in præsentem diem.

And the name of that place was called Galgala, to the present day.

10 Manseruntque filii Israël in Galgalis, et fecerunt Phase quartadecima die mensis ad vesperum in campestribus Jericho: 11 et comederunt de frugibus terræ die altero, azymos panes, et polentam ejusdem anni. 12 Defecitque manna postquam comederunt de frugibus terræ, nec usi sunt ultra cibo illo filii Israël, sed comederunt de frugibus præsentis anni terræ Chanaan.

10 And the children of Israel remained in Gilgal, and they kept the Passover on the fourteenth day of the month at evening on the plains of Jericho: 11 and they ate of the produce of the land on the next day, unleavened loaves, and parched grain of the same year. 12 And the manna ceased after they had eaten of the produce of the land, and the children of Israel no longer used that food, but they ate of the produce of the present year of the land of Canaan.

13 Cum autem esset Josue in agro urbis Jericho, levavit oculos, et vidit virum stantem contra se, evaginatum tenentem gladium: perrexitque ad eum, et ait: Noster es, an adversariorum ? 14 Qui respondit: Nequaquam : sed sum princeps exercitus Domini, et nunc venio. 15 Cecidit Josue pronus in terram, et adorans ait: Quid dominus meus loquitur ad servum suum ? 16 Solve, inquit, calceamentum tuum de pedibus tuis: locus enim, in quo stas, sanctus est. Fecitque Josue ut sibi fuerat imperatum.

13 While Joshua was in the field of the city of Jericho, he lifted his eyes, and saw a man standing opposite him, holding a drawn sword: and he went to him, and said: Are you ours, or of the adversaries ? 14 He replied: By no means : but I am the prince of the army of the Lord, and now I have come. 15 Joshua fell prone upon the ground, and, adoring, said: What does my lord speak to his servant ? 16 Loose, he said, your sandal from your feet: for the place on which you stand is holy. And Joshua did as it had been commanded him.

Jericho, however, was shut and fortified, for fear of the sons of Israel, and no one dared to go out or to come in. 2 And the Lord said to Joshua: Behold, I have given into your hand Jericho, and its king, and all the strong men. 3 Go around the city, all the warriors, once per day: thus you shall do for six days.

4 Septimo autem die, sacerdotes tollant septem buccinas, quarum usus est in jubilæo, et præcedant arcam fœderis: septiesque circuibitis civitatem, et sacerdotes clangent buccinis. 5 Cumque insonuerit vox tubæ longior atque concisior, et in auribus vestris increpuerit, conclamabit omnis populus vociferatione maxima, et muri funditus corruent civitatis, ingredienturque singuli per locum contra quem steterint. 6 Vocavit ergo Josue filius Nun sacerdotes, et dixit ad eos: Tollite arcam fœderis: et septem alii sacerdotes tollant septem jubilæorum buccinas, et incedant ante arcam Domini.

But on the seventh day, let the priests take seven trumpets, whose use is in the jubilee, and let them go before the ark of the covenant: and you shall encircle the city seven times, and the priests shall sound with the trumpets. And when the voice of the trumpet shall be longer and more incisive, and it has resounded in your ears, all the people shall cry out with a very great shout, and the walls of the city shall utterly collapse to their foundations, and each shall enter by the place over against which they shall have stood. Then Joshua the son of Nun called the priests, and said to them: Take up the ark of the covenant; and let seven other priests take seven trumpets of jubilee, and let them march before the ark of the Lord.

8 Cumque Josue verba finisset, et septem sacerdotes septem buccinis clangerent ante arcam fœderis Domini, 9 omnisque præcederet armatus exercitus, reliquum vulgus arcam sequebatur, ac buccinis omnia concrepabant. 10 Præceperat autem Josue populo, dicens: Non clamabitis, nec audietur vox vestra, neque ullus sermo ex ore vestro egredietur, donec veniat dies in quo dicam vobis: Clamate, et vociferamini. 11 Circuivit ergo arca Domini civitatem semel per diem, et reversa in castra mansit ibi.

8 And when Joshua had finished the words, and the seven priests with seven buccinas were blaring before the ark of the covenant of the Lord, 9 and the whole armed host went before, the rest of the common crowd followed the ark, and all things were resounding with the trumpets. 10 But Joshua had commanded the people, saying: You shall not shout, nor shall your voice be heard, nor shall any word go forth from your mouth, until the day comes on which I say to you: Shout, and cry aloud. 11 So the ark of the Lord went around the city once per day, and, having returned to the camp, it stayed there.

12 Therefore, with Joshua rising by night, the priests took up
the ark of the Lord, 13 and seven of them the seven buccinas (trumpets), which are used in the
Jubilee: and they were going before the ark of the Lord, walking and
sounding: and the armed people went before them, but the remaining crowd
followed the ark, and there was a resounding with the buccinas. 14 And they circled the city
once on the second day as well, and returned to the camp. Thus they did for six days.

15 Dies autem septimo, diluculo consurgentes, circuierunt urbem, sicut dispositum erat, septies. 16 Cumque septimo circuitu clangerent buccinis sacerdotes, dixit Josue ad omnem Israël: Vociferamini: tradidit enim vobis Dominus civitatem. 17 Sitque civitas hæc anathema, et omnia quæ in ea sunt, Domino: sola Rahab meretrix vivat, cum universis qui cum ea in domo sunt: abscondit enim nuntios quos direximus.

15 But on the seventh day, rising at dawn, they circled the city, as it had been arranged, seven times. 16 And when at the seventh circuit they were sounding with the trumpets the priests, Joshua said to all Israel: Cry aloud: for the Lord has delivered the city to you. 17 And let this city be anathema, and all things that are in it, to the Lord: only Rahab the prostitute shall live, with all who are with her in the house: for she hid the messengers whom we sent.

18 Vos autem cavete ne de his, quæ præcepta sunt, quippiam contingatis, et sitis prævaricationis rei, et omnia castra Israël sub peccato sint atque turbentur. 19 Quidquid autem auri et argenti fuerit, et vasorum æneorum ac ferri, Domino consecretur, repositum in thesauris ejus. 20 Igitur omni populo vociferante, et clangentibus tubis, postquam in aures multitudinis vox sonitusque increpuit, muri illico corruerunt: et ascendit unusquisque per locum qui contra se erat: ceperuntque civitatem, 21 et interfecerunt omnia quæ erant in ea, a viro usque ad mulierem, ab infante usque ad senem.

18 But you, beware
lest of these things which are commanded you you touch anything, and you be
guilty of transgression, and all the camp of Israel be under sin and be
troubled. 19 But whatever of gold and silver there shall be, and of brazen
and iron vessels, let it be consecrated to the Lord, laid up in his treasury. 20 Therefore,
when all the people shouted, and the trumpets were blaring, after the voice
and the sound had struck the ears of the multitude, the walls immediately fell down; and
each man went up by the place that was opposite him; and they took
the city, 21 and they slew all that were in it, from man even to
woman, from infant even to elder.

Boves quoque et oves et asinos in ore gladii percusserunt.

They also struck oxen and sheep and donkeys by the edge of the sword.

22 Duobus autem viris, qui exploratores missi fuerant, dixit Josue: Ingredimini domum mulieris meretricis, et producite eam, et omnia quæ illius sunt, sicut illi juramento firmastis. 23 Ingressique juvenes eduxerunt Rahab, et parentes ejus, fratres quoque, et cunctam supellectilem ac cognationem illius, et extra castra Israël manere fecerunt. 24 Urbem autem, et omnia quæ erant in ea, succenderunt, absque auro et argento, et vasis æneis, ac ferro, quæ in ærarium Domini consecrarunt.

22 But to the two men who had been sent as explorers, Joshua said: Enter the house of the harlot-woman, and bring her out, and all that are hers, as you confirmed to her by an oath. 23 And the young men, having entered, brought out Rahab, and her parents, and also her brothers, and all her furnishings and kindred, and they caused them to remain outside the camp of Israel. 24 But the city, and all that were in it, they burned, except the gold and silver, and the bronze vessels and the iron, which they consecrated into the treasury of the Lord.

25 Rahab vero meretricem, et domum patris ejus, et omnia quæ habebat, fecit Josue vivere, et habitaverunt in medio Israël, usque in præsentem diem: eo quod absconderit nuntios, quos miserat ut explorarent Jericho. In tempore illo, imprecatus est Josue, dicens: 26 Maledictus vir coram Domino, qui suscitaverit et ædificaverit civitatem Jericho. In primogenito suo fundamenta illius jaciat, et in novissimo liberorum ponat portas ejus.

25 But Rahab the prostitute, and her father's house, and all that she had, Joshua made to live, and they dwelt in the midst of Israel, unto the present day: because she had hidden the messengers whom he had sent to spy out Jericho. At that time Joshua imprecated, saying: 26 Cursed be the man before the Lord, who shall raise up and rebuild the city of Jericho. In his firstborn let him lay its foundations, and in the youngest of his children set its gates.

27 Fuit ergo Dominus cum Josue, et nomen ejus vulgatum est in omni terra. 7 1 Filii autem Israël prævaricati sunt mandatum, et usurpaverunt de anathemate. Nam Achan filius Charmi filii Zabdi filii Zare de tribu Juda tulit aliquid de anathemate: iratusque est Dominus contra filios Israël. 2 Cumque mitteret Josue de Jericho viros contra Hai, quæ est juxta Bethaven, ad orientalem plagam oppidi Bethel, dixit eis: Ascendite, et explorate terram.

27 Therefore the Lord was with Joshua, and his name
was made renowned in all the land. 7 1 But the sons of Israel transgressed the mandate, and usurped from the anathema. For Achan, son of Carmi, son of
Zabdi, son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took something from the anathema; and the Lord was angry
against the sons of Israel. 2 And when Joshua sent from Jericho
men against Ai, which is next to Beth-aven, on the eastern quarter of the town of
Bethel, he said to them: Ascend, and explore the land.

Qui præcepta complentes exploraverunt Hai. 3 Et reversi dixerunt ei: Non ascendat omnis populus, sed duo vel tria millia virorum pergant, et deleant civitatem: quare omnis populus frustra vexabitur contra hostes paucissimos ? 4 Ascenderunt ergo tria millia pugnatorum. Qui statim terga vertentes, 5 percussi sunt a viris urbis Hai, et corruerunt ex eis triginta sex homines: persecutique sunt eos adversarii de porta usque ad Sabarim, et ceciderunt per prona fugientes: pertimuitque cor populi, et instar aquæ liquefactum est.

Who, completing the precepts,
explored Hai. 3 And on returning they said to him: Let not
all the people go up, but let two or three thousand men go on, and destroy
the city: why will all the people be vexed in vain against enemies
very few ? 4 Therefore three thousand combatants went up. Who, immediately
turning their backs, 5 were struck by the men of the city of Hai, and 36 men fell from them:
and the adversaries pursued them from the gate as far as Sabarim, and they fell headlong while fleeing:
and the heart of the people was afraid, and was melted like water.

6 Josue vero scidit vestimenta sua, et pronus cecidit in terram coram arca Domini usque ad vesperam, tam ipse quam omnes senes Israël: miseruntque pulverem super capita sua, 7 et dixit Josue: Heu Domine Deus, quid voluisti traducere populum istum Jordanem fluvium, ut traderes nos in manus Amorrhæi, et perderes ? utinam ut cœpimus, mansissemus trans Jordanem. 8 Mi Domine Deus, quid dicam, videns Israëlem hostibus suis terga vertentem ? 9 Audient Chananæi, et omnes habitatores terræ, et pariter conglobati circumdabunt nos, atque delebunt nomen nostrum de terra: et quid facies magno nomini tuo ?

6 But Joshua tore his garments, and fell prone upon the earth before the ark of the Lord until evening, both he and all the elders of Israel: and they threw dust upon their heads, 7 and Joshua said: Alas, Lord God, why did you will to bring this people across the Jordan River, to deliver us into the hands of the Amorrites, and destroy us ? Would that, as we began, we had remained beyond the Jordan. 8 My Lord God, what shall I say, seeing Israel turning its back to its enemies ? 9 The Canaanites will hear, and all the inhabitants of the land, and gathered together alike they will encircle us, and wipe out our name from the earth: and what will you do for your great name ?

10 Dixitque Dominus ad Josue: Surge: cur jaces pronus in terra ? 11 Peccavit Israël, et prævaricatus est pactum meum: tuleruntque de anathemate, et furati sunt atque mentiti, et absconderunt inter vasa sua. 12 Nec poterit Israël stare ante hostes suos, eosque fugiet: quia pollutus est anathemate. Non ero ultra vobiscum, donec conteratis eum qui hujus sceleris reus est.

10 And the Lord said to Joshua: Rise; why do you lie prone on the ground ? 11 Israel has sinned, and has transgressed my covenant; and they have taken from the anathema, and have stolen and also lied, and have hidden it among their own vessels. 12 Nor will Israel be able to stand before his enemies, and he will flee from them: because it has been polluted by the anathema. I will no longer be with you, until you crush him who is guilty of this crime.

13 Surge, sanctifica populum, et dic eis: Sanctificamini in crastinum: hæc enim dicit Dominus Deus Israël: Anathema in medio tui est, Israël: non poteris stare coram hostibus tuis, donec deleatur ex te qui hoc contaminatus est scelere. 14 Accedetisque mane singuli per tribus vestras: et quamcumque tribum sors invenerit, accedet per cognationes suas, et cognatio per domos, domusque per viros. 15 Et quicumque ille in hoc facinore fuerit deprehensus, comburetur igni cum omni substantia sua: quoniam prævaricatus est pactum Domini, et fecit nefas in Israël.

13 Arise, sanctify the people, and say to them: Sanctify yourselves for the morrow; for thus says the Lord God of Israel: Anathema is in your midst, Israel: you will not be able to stand before your enemies until he who has been contaminated by this crime is blotted out from you. 14 And you shall approach in the morning, each by your tribes; and whatever tribe the lot shall find shall approach by its kindreds, and the kindred by houses, and the house by men. 15 And whoever shall be apprehended in this crime, shall be burned with fire with all his substance; for he has transgressed the covenant of the Lord, and has done a nefarious thing in Israel.

16 Surgens itaque Josue mane, applicuit Israël per tribus suas, et inventa est tribus Juda. 17 Quæ cum juxta familias suas esset oblata, inventa est familia Zare. Illam quoque per domos offerens, reperit Zabdi : 18 cujus domum in singulos dividens viros, invenit Achan filium Charmi filii Zabdi filii Zare de tribu Juda.

16 So Joshua, rising in the morning, made Israel draw near by its tribes, and
the tribe of Judah was found. 17 Which, when it had been presented according to its families,
the family of Zerah was found. Presenting that also by households, he found Zabdi
: 18 dividing his household man by man, he found Achan, son of Carmi,
son of Zabdi, son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah.

19 Et ait Josue ad Achan: Fili mi, da gloriam Domino Deo Israël, et confitere, atque indica mihi quid feceris, ne abscondas. 20 Responditque Achan Josue, et dixit ei: Vere ego peccavi Domino Deo Israël, et sic et sic feci. 21 Vidi enim inter spolia pallium coccineum valde bonum, et ducentos siclos argenti, regulamque auream quinquaginta siclorum: et concupiscens abstuli, et abscondi in terra contra medium tabernaculi mei, argentumque fossa humo operui.

19 And Joshua said to Achan: My
son, give glory to the Lord God of Israel, and confess, and indicate to me what
you have done; do not conceal it. 20 And Achan answered Joshua and said to him: Truly
I have sinned against the Lord God of Israel, and thus and thus I did. 21 For I saw among
the spoils a very fine scarlet mantle, and two hundred shekels of silver,
and a golden ingot of fifty shekels; and, coveting, I took it, and
I hid it in the earth toward the middle of my tent, and I covered the silver with earth in a dug pit.

22 Misit ergo Josue ministros: qui currentes ad tabernaculum illius, repererunt cuncta abscondita in eodem loco, et argentum simul. 23 Auferentesque de tentorio, tulerunt ea ad Josue, et ad omnes filios Israël, projeceruntque ante Dominum. 24 Tollens itaque Josue Achan filium Zare, argentumque et pallium, et auream regulam, filios quoque et filias ejus, boves et asinos et oves, ipsumque tabernaculum, et cunctam supellectilem (et omnis Israël cum eo), duxerunt eos ad vallem Achor: 25 ubi dixit Josue: Quia turbasti nos, exturbet te Dominus in die hac.

22 Therefore Joshua sent ministers: who, running to his tabernacle,
found all things hidden in the same place, and the silver as well. 23 And removing them from the tent, they brought them to Joshua, and to all the sons of
Israel, and they threw them down before the Lord. 24 So Joshua, taking Achan
the son of Zare, and the silver and the mantle, and the golden bar, and his sons and
his daughters, and the oxen and the donkeys and the sheep, and the tent itself, and all the
furnishings (and all Israel with him), they led them to the valley of Achor:
25 where Joshua said: Because you have troubled us, may the Lord trouble you on this day.

Lapidavitque eum omnis Israël: et cuncta quæ illius erant, igne consumpta sunt. 26 Congregaveruntque super eum acervum magnum lapidum, qui permanet usque in præsentem diem. Et aversus est furor Domini ab eis.

And the name of that place was called, the valley of Achor, to this day. 8 1 But the Lord said to Joshua: Do not fear, nor be dismayed: take with you all the multitude of warriors, and rising up go up to the town of Hai. Behold, I have delivered into your hand its king and people, and the city and the land.

2 And you shall do to the city of Hai, and to its king, as you did to Jericho, and to its king : but the booty, and all the living creatures you shall plunder for yourselves: set an ambush for the city behind it. 3 And Joshua rose up, and all the army of warriors with him, that they might go up to Hai: and he sent at night thirty thousand chosen mighty men, 4 and he commanded them, saying: Set an ambush behind the city, and do not withdraw farther: and you shall all be ready. 5 But I, and the rest of the multitude that is with me, will approach from the opposite side against the city.

Cumque exierint contra nos, sicut ante fecimus, fugiemus, et terga vertemus, 6 donec persequentes ab urbe longius protrahantur: putabunt enim nos fugere sicut prius. 7 Nobis ergo fugientibus, et illis persequentibus, consurgetis de insidiis, et vastabitis civitatem: tradetque eam Dominus Deus vester in manus vestras. 8 Cumque ceperitis, succendite eam, et sic omnia facietis, ut jussi.

And when they come out against us, as we did before, we will flee, and we will turn our backs, 6 until the pursuers are drawn farther from the city: for they will think that we are fleeing as before. 7 Therefore, while we are fleeing and they are pursuing, you shall rise from the ambush and devastate the city: and the Lord your God will deliver it into your hands. 8 And when you have taken it, set it ablaze, and thus you shall do all things as I have commanded.

9 Dimisitque eos, et perrexerunt ad locum insidiarum, sederuntque inter Bethel et Hai, ad occidentalem plagam urbis Hai: Josue autem nocte illa in medio mansit populi, 10 surgensque diluculo recensuit socios, et ascendit cum senioribus in fronte exercitus, vallatus auxilio pugnatorum. 11 Cumque venissent et ascendissent ex adverso civitatis, steterunt ad septentrionalem urbis plagam, inter quam et eos erat vallis media. 12 Quinque autem millia viros elegerat, et posuerat in insidiis inter Bethel et Hai ex occidentali parte ejusdem civitatis: 13 omnis vero reliquus exercitus ad aquilonem aciem dirigebat, ita ut novissimi illius multitudinis occidentalem plagam urbis attingerent.

9 And he dismissed them, and they went on to the place of ambush, and sat between Bethel and Ai, on the occidental quarter of the city of Ai: but Joshua that night stayed in the midst of the people, 10 and rising at daybreak he reviewed his associates, and went up with the elders at the front of the army, encompassed with the aid of fighting men. 11 And when they had come and had gone up opposite the city, they stood on the northern quarter of the city, and between it and them there was a valley in the midst. 12 But he had chosen five thousand men, and had placed them in ambush between Bethel and Ai on the western part of that same city: 13 but all the remaining army was drawing up its line to the north, so that the hindmost of that multitude touched the western quarter of the city.

Abiit ergo Josue nocte illa, et stetit in vallis medio.

Therefore Joshua departed that night, and stood in the midst of the valley.

14 Quod cum vidisset rex Hai, festinavit mane, et egressus est cum omni exercitu civitatis, direxitque aciem contra desertum, ignorans quod post tergum laterent insidiæ. 15 Josue vero et omnis Israël cesserunt loco, simulantes metum, et fugientes per solitudinis viam. 16 At illi vociferantes pariter, et se mutuo cohortantes, persecuti sunt eos. Cumque recessissent a civitate, 17 et ne unus quidem in urbe Hai et Bethel remansisset qui non persequeretur Israël (sicut eruperant aperta oppida relinquentes), 18 dixit Dominus ad Josue: Leva clypeum, qui in manu tua est, contra urbem Hai, quoniam tibi tradam eam.

14 When the king of Hai saw this, he hastened in the morning, and went out with all the army of the city, and drew up the line of battle toward the desert, not knowing that behind his back ambushes were lying hidden. 15 But Joshua and all Israel gave ground from the place, feigning fear, and fleeing by the way of the wilderness. 16 But they, shouting together and exhorting one another, pursued them. And when they had withdrawn from the city, 17 and not even a single one remained in the city of Hai and Bethel who did not pursue Israel (since they had burst out, leaving the towns open), 18 the Lord said to Joshua: Raise the shield which is in your hand against the city of Hai, for I will hand it over to you.

19 Cumque elevasset clypeum ex adverso civitatis, insidiæ, quæ latebant, surrexerunt confestim: et pergentes ad civitatem, ceperunt, et succenderunt eam. 20 Viri autem civitatis, qui persequebantur Josue, respicientes et videntes fumum urbis ad cælum usque conscendere, non potuerunt ultra huc illucque diffugere: præsertim cum hi qui simulaverant fugam, et tendebant ad solitudinem, contra persequentes fortissime restitissent. 21 Vidensque Josue et omnis Israël quod capta esset civitas, et fumus urbis ascenderet, reversus percussit viros Hai.

19 And when
he had lifted the shield over against the city, the ambush that had been lying hidden
rose up immediately; and going on to the city, they took it and
set it on fire. 20 But the men of the city, who were pursuing Joshua,
looking back and seeing the smoke of the city go up even to heaven, could not
any longer scatter hither and thither: especially since those who
had feigned flight and were making for the wilderness, against the pursuers
had stood most bravely. 21 And Joshua and all Israel, seeing that the city had been taken
and that the smoke of the city was ascending, turned back and smote the men of Ai.

22 Siquidem et illi qui ceperant et succenderant civitatem, egressi ex urbe contra suos, medios hostium ferire cœperunt. Cum ergo ex utraque parte adversarii cæderentur, ita ut nullus de tanta multitudine salvaretur, 23 regem quoque urbis Hai apprehenderunt viventem, et obtulerunt Josue.

22 Indeed, those who had taken and set the city on fire, having gone out from
the city to meet their own, began to strike the enemies in the midst. Therefore, as on either
side the adversaries were being cut down, so that none of so great a multitude
was saved, 23 they also seized alive the king of the city of Ai, and
presented him to Joshua.

24 Igitur omnibus interfectis, qui Israëlem ad deserta tendentem fuerant persecuti, et in eodem loco gladio corruentibus, reversi filii Israël percusserunt civitatem. 25 Erant autem qui in eodem die conciderant a viro usque ad mulierem, duodecim millia hominum, omnes urbis Hai. 26 Josue vero non contraxit manum, quam in sublime porrexerat, tenens clypeum donec interficerentur omnes habitatores Hai.

24 Therefore, when all who had pursued Israel as it was tending toward the desert had been slain, and had fallen by the sword in the same place, the sons of Israel, returning, struck the city. 25 Now those who had fallen on the same day, from man to woman, were twelve thousand persons, all of the city of Ai. 26 But Joshua did not draw back the hand which he had stretched aloft, holding the shield, until all the inhabitants of Ai were slain.

27 Jumenta autem et prædam civitatis diviserunt sibi filii Israël, sicut præceperat Dominus Josue. 28 Qui succendit urbem, et fecit eam tumulum sempiternum: 29 regem quoque ejus suspendit in patibulo usque ad vesperam et solis occasum. Præcepitque Josue, et deposuerunt cadaver ejus de cruce: projeceruntque in ipso introitu civitatis, congesto super eum magno acervo lapidum, qui permanet usque in præsentem diem.

27 But the beasts of burden and
the prey of the city the sons of Israel divided among themselves, as the Lord had commanded
Joshua. 28 Who set the city on fire, and made it a perpetual tumulus: 29
he also hanged its king on a gibbet until evening and the going down of the sun.
And Joshua gave command, and they took down his cadaver from the cross:
and they threw it at the very entrance of the city, heaping over him a great
cairn of stones, which remains unto the present day.

30 Tunc ædificavit Josue altare Domino Deo Israël in monte Hebal, 31 sicut præceperat Moyses famulus Domini filiis Israël, et scriptum est in volumine legis Moysi: altare vero de lapidibus impolitis, quos ferrum non tetigit: et obtulit super eo holocausta Domino, immolavitque pacificas victimas. 32 Et scripsit super lapides Deuteronomium legis Moysi, quod ille digesserat coram filiis Israël. 33 Omnis autem populus, et majores natu, ducesque ac judices, stabant ex utraque parte arcæ, in conspectu sacerdotum qui portabant arcam fœderis Domini, ut advena, ita et indigena. Media pars eorum juxta montem Garizim, et media juxta montem Hebal, sicut præceperat Moyses famulus Domini.

30 Then Joshua built an altar to the Lord God of Israel on Mount Ebal, 31 as Moses, the servant of the Lord, had commanded the sons of Israel, and as it is written in the book of the law of Moses: namely, an altar of unhewn stones, which iron had not touched: and he offered upon it burnt-offerings to the Lord, and he immolated peace-offerings. 32 And he wrote upon the stones the Deuteronomy of the law of Moses, which he had set forth before the sons of Israel. 33 Now all the people, and the elders by age, and the leaders and judges, stood on either side of the ark, in the sight of the priests who were carrying the ark of the covenant of the Lord, both the sojourner and likewise the native-born. Half of them near Mount Gerizim, and half near Mount Ebal, as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded.

Et primum quidem benedixit populo Israël. 34 Post hæc legit omnia verba benedictionis et maledictionis, et cuncta quæ scripta erant in legis volumine. 35 Nihil ex his quæ Moyses jusserat, reliquit intactum, sed universa replicavit coram omni multitudine Israël, mulieribus ac parvulis, et advenis qui inter eos morabantur. 9 1 Quibus auditis, cuncti reges trans Jordanem, qui versabantur in montanis et campestribus, in maritimis ac littore magni maris, hi quoque qui habitabant juxta Libanum, Hethæus et Amorrhæus, Chananæus, Pherezæus, et Hevæus, et Jebusæus, 2 congregati sunt pariter, ut pugnarent contra Josue et Israël uno animo, eademque sententia.

And first indeed
he blessed the people of Israel. 34 After these things he read all the words of blessing and
of malediction, and all things that were written in the volume of the law. 35 Of those things
which Moses had commanded, he left nothing untouched, but he repeated all
before the whole multitude of Israel, the women and the little ones, and the sojourners who
were dwelling among them. 9 1 When these things were heard, all the kings across the Jordan,
who were ranging in the mountain regions and the plains, in the maritime parts and on the shore
of the Great Sea, those also who were dwelling near Lebanon, the Hittite and
the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, and the Hivite, and the Jebusite, 2 were gathered
together, to fight against Joshua and Israel with one mind and the same purpose.

3 At hi qui habitabant in Gabaon, audientes cuncta quæ fecerat Josue Jericho, et Hai, 4 et callide cogitantes, tulerunt sibi cibaria, saccos veteres asinis imponentes, et utres vinarios scissos atque consutos, 5 calceamentaque perantiqua quæ ad indicium vetustatis pittaciis consuta erant, induti veteribus vestimentis: panes quoque, quos portabant ob viaticum, duri erant, et in frustra comminuti: 6 perrexeruntque ad Josue, qui tunc morabatur in castris Galgalæ, et dixerunt ei, atque simul omni Israëli: De terra longinqua venimus, pacem vobiscum facere cupientes. Responderuntque viri Israël ad eos, atque dixerunt: 7 Ne forte in terra, quæ nobis sorte debetur, habitetis, et non possimus fœdus inire vobiscum. 8 At illi ad Josue: Servi, inquiunt, tui sumus.

3 But those who were dwelling in Gibeon, hearing all the things that Joshua had done to Jericho and Ai, 4 and thinking craftily, took for themselves victuals, placing old sacks upon their donkeys, and wine-skins torn and sewn back together, 5 and very ancient footwear which, as a token of age, had been stitched with patches, clad in old garments; the loaves also which they were carrying for the journey as provisions were hard and crumbled into fragments; 6 and they went on to Joshua, who was then staying in the camp at Gilgal, and they said to him, and likewise to all Israel: From a far land we have come, desiring to make peace with you. And the men of Israel answered them and said: 7 Lest perhaps you dwell in the land which is owed to us by lot, and we cannot enter into a covenant with you. 8 But they said to Joshua: We are, they say, your servants.

Quibus Josue ait: Quinam estis vos ? et unde venistis ? 9 Responderunt : De terra longinqua valde venerunt servi tui in nomine Domini Dei tui. Audivimus enim famam potentiæ ejus, cuncta quæ fecit in Ægypto, 10 et duobus regibus Amorrhæorum qui fuerunt trans Jordanem, Sehon regi Hesebon, et Og regi Basan, qui erat in Astaroth: 11 dixeruntque nobis seniores, et omnes habitatores terræ nostræ: Tollite in manibus cibaria ob longissimam viam, et occurrite eis, et dicite: Servi vestri sumus: fœdus inite nobiscum. 12 En panes quando egressi sumus de domibus nostris, ut veniremus ad vos, calidos sumpsimus ; nunc sicci facti sunt, et vetustate nimia comminuti.

To whom Joshua said: Who are you? and whence have you come? 9 They answered: From a land very far off your servants have come in the name of the Lord your God. For we have heard the fame of his potency, all that he did in Egypt, 10 and to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, Sihon king of Heshbon, and Og king of Bashan, who was in Ashtaroth: 11 and our elders, and all the inhabitants of our land, said to us: Take provisions in your hands for the very long road, and go to meet them, and say: We are your servants: enter into a covenant with us. 12 Behold the loaves—when we went out from our houses to come to you, we took them warm; now they have become dry, and by excessive age are crumbled into fragments.

13 Utres vini novos implevimus ; nunc rupti sunt et soluti. Vestes et calceamenta quibus induimur, et quæ habemus in pedibus, ob longitudinem longioris viæ trita sunt, et pene consumpta. 14 Susceperunt igitur de cibariis eorum, et os Domini non interrogaverunt.

13 We filled new wine-skins; now they are broken and unstitched. The garments and the shoes with which we are clothed, and which we have on our feet, on account of the length of the longer way, are worn and almost consumed. 14 Therefore they received from their provisions, and they did not inquire of the mouth of the Lord.

15 Fecitque Josue cum eis pacem, et inito fœdere pollicitus est quod non occiderentur: principes quoque multitudinis juraverunt eis.

15 And Joshua made peace with them, and, a covenant having been entered, he promised that they would not be killed; the princes of the multitude also swore to them.

16 Post dies autem tres initi fœderis, audierunt quod in vicino habitarent, et inter eos futuri essent. 17 Moveruntque castra filii Israël, et venerunt in civitates eorum die tertio, quarum hæc vocabula sunt: Gabaon, et Caphira, et Beroth, et Cariathiarim. 18 Et non percusserunt eos, eo quod jurassent eis principes multitudinis in nomine Domini Dei Israël. Murmuravit itaque omne vulgus contra principes.

16 But after three days from the covenant having been entered, they heard that they dwelt nearby, and that they would be among them. 17 And the sons of Israel moved camp, and came to their cities on the third day, of which these are the names: Gabaon, and Caphira, and Beroth, and Cariathiarim. 18 And they did not smite them, because the princes of the multitude had sworn to them in the name of the Lord God of Israel. Therefore all the common crowd murmured against the princes.

19 Qui responderunt eis: Juravimus illis in nomine Domini Dei Israël, et idcirco non possumus eos contingere. 20 Sed hoc faciemus eis: reserventur quidem ut vivant, ne contra nos ira Domini concitetur, si pejeraverimus: 21 sed sic vivant, ut in usus universæ multitudinis ligna cædant, aquasque comportent. Quibus hæc loquentibus, 22 vocavit Gabaonitas Josue, et dixit eis: Cur nos decipere fraude voluistis, ut diceretis: Procul valde habitamus a vobis, cum in medio nostri sitis ? 23 itaque sub maledictione eritis, et non deficiet de stirpe vestra ligna cædens, aquasque comportans in domum Dei mei.

19 Who answered them: We have sworn to them in the name of the Lord God of Israel, and therefore we cannot touch them. 20 But this we will do to them: let them be reserved that they may live, lest against us the wrath of the Lord be stirred up, if we perjure ourselves: 21 but thus let them live, that for the uses of the whole multitude they may cut wood and carry water. While they were speaking these things, 22 Joshua called the Gibeonites, and said to them: Why did you wish to deceive us by fraud, so that you said: We dwell very far from you, when you are in the midst of us ? 23 therefore you shall be under a curse, and there shall not fail from your stock one cutting wood and carrying water for the house of my God.

24 Qui responderunt : Nuntiatum est nobis servis tuis, quod promisisset Dominus Deus tuus Moysi servo suo ut traderet vobis omnem terram, et disperderet cunctos habitatores ejus. Timuimus igitur valde, et providimus animabus nostris, vestro terrore compulsi, et hoc consilium inivimus. 25 Nunc autem in manu tua sumus: quod tibi bonum et rectum videtur, fac nobis.

24 They answered : It was announced to your servants that the Lord your God had promised to Moses his servant to deliver to you all the land and to destroy all its inhabitants. Therefore we greatly feared, and we made provision for our lives, compelled by your terror, and we entered into this counsel. 25 Now, however, we are in your hand: what seems good and right to you, do to us.

26 Fecit ergo Josue ut dixerat, et liberavit eos de manu filiorum Israël, ut non occiderentur. 27 Decrevitque in illo die eos esse in ministerio cuncti populi, et altaris Domini, cædentes ligna, et aquas comportantes, usque in præsens tempus, in loco quem Dominus elegisset. 10 1 Quæ cum audisset Adonisedec rex Jerusalem, quod scilicet cepisset Josue Hai, et subvertisset eam (sicut enim fecerat Jericho et regi ejus, sic fecit Hai et regi illius), et quod transfugissent Gabaonitæ ad Israël, et essent fœderati eorum, 2 timuit valde.

26 He did
therefore Joshua as he had said, and liberated them from the hand of the sons of Israel, so that they would not
be killed. 27 And he decreed on that day that they should be in the ministry of the whole
people, and of the altar of the Lord, cutting wood and carrying water, up to
the present time, in the place which the Lord had chosen. 10 1 When
Adonizedek, king of Jerusalem, heard that Joshua had taken Ai, and
had subverted it (for as he had done to Jericho and to its king, so he did to Ai
and to its king), and that the Gibeonites had defected to Israel and were
their confederates, 2 he feared greatly.

Urbs enim magna erat Gabaon, et una civitatum regalium, et major oppido Hai, omnesque bellatores ejus fortissimi. 3 Misit ergo Adonisedec rex Jerusalem ad Oham regem Hebron, et ad Pharam regem Jerimoth, ad Japhia quoque regem Lachis, et ad Dabir regem Eglon, dicens: 4 Ad me ascendite, et ferte præsidium, ut expugnemus Gabaon, quare transfugerit ad Josue, et ad filios Israël. 5 Congregati igitur ascenderunt quinque reges Amorrhæorum: rex Jerusalem, rex Hebron, rex Jerimoth, rex Lachis, rex Eglon, simul cum exercitibus suis: et castrametati sunt circa Gabaon, oppugnantes eam.

For Gabaon was a great city, and one of the royal cities, and greater than the town of Hai, and all its warriors were very mighty. 3 Therefore Adonizedek, king of Jerusalem, sent to Oham (Hoham), king of Hebron, and to Pharam (Piram), king of Jerimoth (Jarmuth), to Japhia also, king of Lachis (Lachish), and to Dabir (Debir), king of Eglon, saying: 4 Come up to me, and bring reinforcement, that we may storm Gabaon (Gibeon), because it has defected to Joshua and to the sons of Israel. 5 So the five kings of the Amorites were gathered and went up: the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jerimoth, the king of Lachis, the king of Eglon, together with their armies; and they encamped around Gabaon, attacking it.

6 Habitatores autem Gabaon urbis obsessæ miserunt ad Josue, qui tunc morabatur in castris apud Galgalam, et dixerunt ei: Ne retrahas manus tuas ab auxilio servorum tuorum: ascende cito, et libera nos, ferque præsidium: convenerunt enim adversum nos omnes reges Amorrhæorum, qui habitant in montanis. 7 Ascenditque Josue de Galgalis, et omnis exercitus bellatorum cum eo, viri fortissimi. 8 Dixitque Dominus ad Josue: Ne timeas eos: in manus enim tuas tradidi illos: nullus ex eis tibi resistere poterit.

6 But the inhabitants of Gabaon, a city under siege, sent to Josue, who was then staying in the camp at Galgalam, and said to him: Do not draw back your hands from the aid of your servants: come up quickly and free us, and bring assistance: for all the kings of the Amorrites who dwell in the mountains have assembled against us. 7 And Josue went up from Galgalis, and all the army of warriors with him, most brave men. 8 And the Lord said to Josue: Do not fear them: for into your hands I have delivered them: none of them will be able to resist you.

9 Irruit itaque Josue super eos repente, tota nocte ascendens de Galgalis. 10 Et conturbavit eos Dominus a facie Israël: contrivitque plaga magna in Gabaon, ac persecutus est eos per viam ascensus Bethoron, et percussit usque Azeca et Maceda. 11 Cumque fugerent filios Israël, et essent in descensu Bethoron, Dominus misit super eos lapides magnos de cælo usque ad Azeca: et mortui sunt multo plures lapidibus grandinis, quam quos gladio percusserant filii Israël. 12 Tunc locutus est Josue Domino, in die qua tradidit Amorrhæum in conspectu filiorum Israël, dixitque coram eis: Sol, contra Gabaon ne movearis, et luna contra vallem Ajalon.

9 Therefore Joshua rushed upon them suddenly, going up all
night from Gilgal. 10 And the Lord threw them into confusion before the face of
Israel; and he crushed them with a great blow at Gibeon, and pursued them by the
way of the ascent of Beth-horon, and struck them as far as Azekah and Makkedah. 11 And as
they were fleeing from before the sons of Israel, and were in the descent of Beth-horon, the Lord sent
upon them great stones from heaven as far as Azekah; and many more died by the
hailstones than those whom the sons of Israel had struck with the sword.
12 Then Joshua spoke to the Lord, on the day when he delivered up the Amorite in the
sight of the sons of Israel, and he said before them: Sun, do not move against Gibeon,
and moon, against the valley of Aijalon.

13 Steteruntque sol et luna, donec ulcisceretur se gens de inimicis suis. Nonne scriptum est hoc in libro justorum ? Stetit itaque sol in medio cæli, et non festinavit occumbere spatio unius diei. 14 Non fuit antea nec postea tam longa dies, obediente Domino voci hominis, et pugnante pro Israël. 15 Reversusque est Josue cum omni Israël in castra Galgalæ.

13 And the sun and the moon stood still,
until the nation took vengeance on its enemies. Is not this written in the
book of the Just ? Therefore the sun stood in the midst of heaven, and did not hasten
to go down for the space of one day. 14 There was not before nor after so long a
day, with the Lord obeying the voice of a man, and fighting for Israel. 15
And Joshua returned with all Israel to the camp at Gilgal.

16 Fugerant enim quinque reges et se absconderant in spelunca urbis Maceda. 17 Nuntiatumque est Josue quod inventi essent quinque reges latentes in spelunca urbis Maceda. 18 Qui præcepit sociis, et ait: Volvite saxa ingentia ad os speluncæ, et ponite viros industrios, qui clausos custodiant: 19 vos autem nolite stare, sed persequimini hostes, et extremos quosque fugientium cædite: nec dimittatis eos urbium suarum intrare præsidia, quos tradidit Dominus Deus in manus vestras.

16 For the five kings had fled and had hidden themselves in a cave of the city of Makkedah. 17 And it was announced to Joshua that the five kings had been found, lying hidden in a cave of the city of Makkedah. 18 And he commanded his companions, and said: Roll huge stones to the mouth of the cave, and set industrious men to guard those shut in; 19 but you, do not stand still, rather pursue the enemies, and cut down all the hindmost of the fugitives; and do not permit them to enter the garrisons of their cities, those whom the Lord God has delivered into your hands.

20 Cæsis ergo adversariis plaga magna, et usque ad internecionem pene consumptis, hi qui Israël effugere potuerunt, ingressi sunt civitates munitas. 21 Reversusque est omnis exercitus ad Josue in Maceda, ubi tunc erant castra, sani et integro numero: nullusque contra filios Israël mutire ausus est. 22 Præcepitque Josue, dicens: Aperite os speluncæ, et producite ad me quinque reges, qui in ea latitant.

20 With the adversaries smitten with a great blow, and almost consumed unto extermination,
those of them who were able to escape entered fortified cities. 21
And all the army returned to Joshua at Makkedah, where the camp then was,
sound and with full number: and no one dared to mutter against the sons of Israel. 22 And Joshua commanded, saying: Open the mouth of the cave, and
bring out to me the five kings who are lurking in it.

23 Feceruntque ministri ut sibi fuerat imperatum: et eduxerunt ad eum quinque reges de spelunca, regem Jerusalem, regem Hebron, regem Jerimoth, regem Lachis, regem Eglon. 24 Cumque educti essent ad eum, vocavit omnes viros Israël, et ait ad principes exercitus qui secum erant: Ite, et ponite pedes super colla regum istorum. Qui cum perrexissent, et subjectorum colla pedibus calcarent, 25 rursum ait ad eos: Nolite timere, nec paveatis: confortamini, et estote robusti: sic enim faciet Dominus cunctis hostibus vestris, adversum quos dimicatis.

23 And the ministers did as it had been commanded to them: and they led out to him five kings from the cave, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jerimoth, the king of Lachis, the king of Eglon. 24 And when they had been brought out to him, he called all the men of Israel, and said to the princes of the army who were with him: Go, and set your feet upon the necks of these kings. And when they had gone, and were treading with their feet the necks of the subjected, 25 he said to them again: Do not fear, nor be dismayed: be strengthened, and be robust: for thus will the Lord do to all your enemies, against whom you fight.

26 Percussitque Josue, et interfecit eos, atque suspendit super quinque stipites: fueruntque suspensi usque ad vesperum. 27 Cumque occumberet sol, præcepit sociis ut deponerent eos de patibulis. Qui depositos projecerunt in speluncam in qua latuerant, et posuerunt super os ejus saxa ingentia, quæ permanent usque in præsens.

26 And Joshua struck them, and put them to death, and hung them on five stakes; and they were hung until evening. 27 And when the sun was setting, he ordered his companions to take them down from the gibbets. Those who had taken them down threw them into the cave in which they had hidden, and placed over its mouth huge stones, which remain to the present day.

28 Eodem quoque die, Macedam cepit Josue, et percussit eam in ore gladii, regemque illius interfecit, et omnes habitatores ejus: non dimisit in ea saltem parvas reliquias. Fecitque regi Maceda sicut fecerat regi Jericho. 29 Transivit autem cum omni Israël de Maceda in Lebna, et pugnabat contra eam: 30 quam tradidit Dominus cum rege suo in manus Israël: percusseruntque urbem in ore gladii, et omnes habitatores ejus: non dimiserunt in ea ullas reliquias.

28 On the same day also, Joshua took Makkedah, and struck it with the edge of the sword, and he killed its king, and all its inhabitants: he did not leave in it even the least remnant. And he did to the king of Makkedah as he had done to the king of Jericho. 29 Then he passed on with all Israel from Makkedah to Libnah, and he was fighting against it: 30 which the Lord delivered, with its king, into the hands of Israel: and they struck the city with the edge of the sword, and all its inhabitants: they did not leave in it any remnant.

Feceruntque regi Lebna sicut fecerant regi Jericho. 31 De Lebna transivit in Lachis cum omni Israël: et exercitu per gyrum disposito, oppugnabat eam. 32 Tradiditque Dominus Lachis in manus Israël, et cepit eam die altero, atque percussit in ore gladii, omnemque animam quæ fuerat in ea, sicut fecerat Lebna.

And they did to the king of Lebna
as they had done to the king of Jericho. 31 From Lebna he crossed into Lachis with all
Israel; and with the army arranged around, he was besieging it. 32 And the Lord
delivered Lachis into the hands of Israel, and he took it on the second day, and struck it
by the edge of the sword, and every soul that had been in it, as he had done to Lebna.

33 At that time Horam, king of Gezer, went up to help Lachish; whom Joshua struck, with all his people, unto extermination. 34 And he passed on from Lachish to Eglon, and surrounded it, 35 and stormed it the same day; and he struck with the edge of the sword all the souls that were in it, according to all that he had done to Lachish. 36 He went up also with all Israel from Eglon to Hebron, and fought against it; 37 he captured it, and struck with the edge of the sword, its king also, and all the towns of that region, and all the souls that had dwelt in it; he left in it no remnants; as he had done to Eglon, so he did to Hebron, consuming with the sword all that he found in it.

38 Inde reversus in Dabir, 39 cepit eam atque vastavit: regem quoque ejus atque omnia per circuitum oppida percussit in ore gladii: non dimisit in ea ullas reliquias: sicut fecerat Hebron et Lebna et regibus earum, sic fecit Dabir et regi illius. 40 Percussit itaque Josue omnem terram montanam et meridianam atque campestrem, et Asedoth, cum regibus suis: non dimisit in ea ullas reliquias, sed omne quod spirare poterat interfecit, sicut præceperat ei Dominus Deus Israël, 41 a Cadesbarne usque Gazam. Omnem terram Gosen usque Gabaon, 42 universosque reges, et regiones eorum uno impetu cepit atque vastavit: Dominus enim Deus Israël pugnavit pro eo. 43 Reversusque est cum omni Israël ad locum castrorum in Galgala.

38 Thence he returned to Debir, 39 seized it
and laid it waste: its king as well and all the towns round about
he struck with the edge of the sword: he left in it no remnants: just as
he had done to Hebron and to Libnah and to their kings, so he did to Debir and to its
king. 40 Thus Joshua struck all the hill-country and the southern region
and the lowland, and the Asedoth, with their kings: he left in it no
remnants, but put to death everything that could breathe, as the Lord God of Israel
had commanded him, 41 from Kadesh-barnea as far as Gaza. All the land of Goshen
as far as Gibeon, 42 and all the kings and their regions he took
and devastated in one onslaught: for the Lord God of Israel fought for him. 43
And he returned with all Israel to the place of the camp at Gilgal.

11 1 When Jabin, king of Hazor, had heard these things, he sent to Jobab, king of Madon, and to the king
of Shimron, and to the king of Achshaph: 2 to the kings also of the north, who
dwelt in the mountains and in the plain toward the south of Chinneroth, in
the lowlands also and in the regions of Dor by the sea: 3 the Canaanite also
from the east and the west, and the Amorite and the Hittite and the Perizzite and
the Jebusite in the mountains; the Hivite also who dwelt at the foot of Hermon in
the land of Mizpah. 4 And they all went out with their troops, a people exceedingly
numerous like the sand that is on the seashore, and horses and chariots
of an immense multitude. 5 And all these kings assembled as one at the waters of
Merom, to fight against Israel.

6 Dixitque Dominus ad Josue: Ne timeas eos: cras enim hac eadem hora ego tradam omnes istos vulnerandos in conspectu Israël: equos eorum subnervabis, et currus igne combures. 7 Venitque Josue, et omnis exercitus cum eo, adversus illos ad aquas Merom subito, et irruerunt super eos, 8 tradiditque illos Dominus in manus Israël. Qui percusserunt eos, et persecuti sunt usque ad Sidonem magnam, et aquas Maserephoth, campumque Masphe, qui est ad orientalem illius partem. Ita percussit omnes, ut nullas dimitteret ex eis reliquias: 9 fecitque sicut præceperat ei Dominus: equos eorum subnervavit, currusque combussit igni.

6 And the Lord said to Joshua: Do not fear them: for tomorrow at this same hour I will deliver all these to be struck down in the sight of Israel: you shall hamstring their horses, and you shall burn their chariots with fire. 7 And Joshua came, and all the army with him, against them at the waters of Merom suddenly, and they rushed upon them, 8 and the Lord delivered them into the hands of Israel. They struck them, and pursued them as far as Great Sidon, and the waters of Maserephoth, and the plain of Mizpeh, which is at its eastern part. Thus he struck all, so that he left none of them remaining: 9 and he did as the Lord had commanded him: he hamstrung their horses, and burned their chariots with fire.

10 Reversusque statim cepit Asor, et regem ejus percussit gladio. Asor enim antiquitus inter omnia regna hæc principatum tenebat. 11 Percussitque omnes animas quæ ibidem morabantur: non dimisit in ea ullas reliquias, sed usque ad internecionem universa vastavit, ipsamque urbem peremit incendio.

10 And having returned, he immediately seized Hazor, and struck its king with the sword. For Hazor of old held the principate among all these kingdoms. 11
And he struck all the souls who were dwelling there: he left in it
no remnants, but laid everything waste unto extermination, and the city itself
he destroyed with fire.

12 Et omnes per circuitum civitates, regesque earum, cepit, percussit atque delevit, sicut præceperat ei Moyses famulus Domini. 13 Absque urbibus, quæ erant in collibus et in tumulis sitæ, ceteras succendit Israël: unam tantum Asor munitissimam flamma consumpsit. 14 Omnemque prædam istarum urbium ac jumenta diviserunt sibi filii Israël, cunctis hominibus interfectis.

12 And all the cities round about, and their kings,
he took, struck, and destroyed, just as Moses, the servant of the Lord, had commanded him. 13 Apart from the cities which were situated on hills and on mounds,
Israel set the others on fire: only Asor, most strongly fortified, did the flame consume. 14 And all the plunder of those cities and the beasts of burden the sons of Israel divided among themselves,
all the human beings having been slain.

15 Sicut præceperat Dominus Moysi servo suo, ita præcepit Moyses Josue, et ille universa complevit: non præteriit de universis mandatis, nec unum quidem verbum quod jusserat Dominus Moysi. 16 Cepit itaque Josue omnem terram montanam et meridianam, terramque Gosen, et planitiem, et occidentalem plagam, montemque Israël, et campestria ejus, 17 et partem montis, quæ ascendit Seir usque Baalgad, per planitiem Libani subter montem Hermon: omnes reges eorum cepit, percussit, et occidit. 18 Multo tempore pugnavit Josue contra reges istos.

15 As the Lord had commanded Moses his servant,
so Moses commanded Joshua, and he completed all of it:
he did not pass over any of all the mandates, not even one word which
the Lord had commanded Moses. 16 Therefore Joshua took all the hill-country and
the south, and the land of Goshen, and the plain, and the occidental quarter,
and the mountain of Israel, and its champaigns, 17 and the part of the mountain which ascends
to Seir as far as Baalgad, through the plain of Lebanon beneath Mount Hermon: all
their kings he took, he struck, and he slew. 18 For a long time Joshua fought
against those kings.

19 Non fuit civitas quæ se traderet filiis Israël, præter Hevæum, qui habitabat in Gabaon: omnes enim bellando cepit. 20 Domini enim sententia fuerat, ut indurarentur corda eorum, et pugnarent contra Israël, et caderent, et non mererentur ullam clementiam, ac perirent, sicut præceperat Dominus Moysi. 21 In illo tempore venit Josue, et interfecit Enacim de montanis, Hebron, et Dabir, et Anab, et de omni monte Juda et Israël, urbesque eorum delevit.

19 There was no city that would hand itself over to the sons
of Israel, except the Hivite, who was dwelling in Gibeon: for by warring
he captured all. 20 For the Lord’s sentence had been, that their hearts be hardened, and
that they fight against Israel, and fall, and not merit any
clemency, and perish, as the Lord had commanded Moses. 21 At that
time Joshua came, and struck down the Anakim from the highlands—Hebron, and Debir,
and Anab—and from all the mountain of Judah and of Israel, and he destroyed their cities.

22 Non reliquit ullum de stirpe Enacim, in terra filiorum Israël: absque civitatibus Gaza, et Geth, et Azoto, in quibus solis relicti sunt. 23 Cepit ergo Josue omnem terram, sicut locutus est Dominus ad Moysen, et tradidit eam in possessionem filiis Israël secundum partes et tribus suas: quievitque terra a præliis. 12 1 Hi sunt reges, quos percusserunt filii Israël, et possederunt terram eorum trans Jordanem ad solis ortum, a torrente Arnon usque ad montem Hermon, et omnem orientalem plagam, quæ respicit solitudinem.

22 Not
did he leave any of the stock of the Anakim, in the land of the sons of Israel: except
the cities Gaza, and Gath, and Azotus, in which alone they were left. 23
Therefore Joshua took all the land, just as the Lord had spoken to Moses, and
handed it over as a possession to the sons of Israel according to their parts and their tribes:
and the land rested from battles. 12 1 These are the kings whom the sons of Israel struck,
and possessed their land beyond the Jordan toward the rising of the sun, from the torrent of Arnon as far as Mount Hermon, and all the oriental region, which looks toward the wilderness.

2 Sehon rex Amorrhæorum, qui habitavit in Hesebon, dominatus est ab Aroër, quæ sita est super ripam torrentis Arnon, et mediæ partis in valle, dimidiæque Galaad, usque ad torrentem Jaboc, qui est terminus filiorum Ammon. 3 Et a solitudine usque ad mare Ceneroth contra orientem, et usque ad mare deserti, quod est mare salsissimum, ad orientalem plagam per viam quæ ducit Bethsimoth: et ab australi parte, quæ subjacet Asedoth, Phasga. 4 Terminus Og regis Basan, de reliquiis Raphaim, qui habitavit in Astaroth, et in Edrai, et dominatus est in monte Hermon, et in Salecha, atque in universa Basan, usque ad terminos 5 Gessuri, et Machati, et dimidiæ partis Galaad: terminos Sehon regis Hesebon.

2 Sehon, king of the Amorites, who dwelt in Hesebon,
ruled from Aroer, which is set upon the bank of the torrent Arnon, and
the middle part in the valley, and half of Galaad, as far as the torrent Jaboc, which
is the boundary of the sons of Ammon. 3 And from the wilderness as far as the sea Ceneroth
toward the east, and as far as the sea of the desert, which is the most salty sea, to
the eastern region along the way which leads to Bethsimoth: and from the southern part,
which lies below Asedoth, Phasga. 4 The border of Og king of Basan, of the remnants
of Raphaim, who dwelt in Astaroth, and in Edrai, and ruled in Mount Hermon, and in
Salecha, and in all Basan, up to the borders
5 of Gessuri, and Machati, and of half of Galaad: the borders of Sehon king of Hesebon.

6 Moses, the servant of the Lord, and the sons of Israel struck them down, and Moses delivered their land into possession for the Reubenites and the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh. 7 These are the kings of the land whom Joshua and the sons of Israel struck on the far side of the Jordan on the western side, from Baalgad in the plain of Lebanon, as far as the mountain whose part goes up into Seir: and Joshua delivered it into possession to the tribes of Israel, to each their parts, 8 both in the hill-country and in the plains and the level fields, in Asedoth, and in the wilderness, and in the Negeb; the Hittite and the Amorite, the Canaanite and the Perizzite, the Hivite and the Jebusite. 9 King of Jericho, one: king of Ai, which is beside Bethel, one: 10 king of Jerusalem, one, king of Hebron, one, 11 king of Jerimoth (Jarmuth), one, king of Lachis (Lachish), one, 12 king of Eglon, one, king of Gazer (Gezer), one, 13 king of Dabir (Debir), one, king of Gader (Geder), one, 14 king of Herma (Hormah), one, king of Hered (Arad), one, 15 king of Lebna (Libnah), one, king of Odullam (Adullam), one, 16 king of Maceda (Makkedah), one, king of Bethel, one, 17 king of Taphua (Tappuah), one, king of Opher (Hepher), one, 18 king of Aphec (Aphek), one, king of Saron (Sharon), one, 19 king of Madon, one, king of Asor (Hazor), one, 20 king of Semeron (Shimron), one, king of Achsaph, one, 21 king of Thenac (Taanach), one, king of Mageddo (Megiddo), one, 22 king of Cades (Kedesh), one, king of Jachanan of Carmel (Jokneam of Carmel), one, 23 king of Dor and of the province of Dor, one, king of the nations in Galgal (Goiim in Gilgal), one, 24 king of Thersa (Tirzah), one: all the kings, thirty-one.

13 1 Josue senex provectæque ætatis erat, et dixit Dominus ad eum: Senuisti, et longævus es, terraque latissima derelicta est, quæ necdum sorte divisa est: 2 omnis videlicet Galilæa, Philisthiim, et universa Gessuri. 3 A fluvio turbido, qui irrigat Ægyptum, usque ad terminos Accaron contra aquilonem : terra Chanaan, quæ in quinque regulos Philisthiim dividitur, Gazæos, et Azotios, Ascalonitas, Gethæos, et Accaronitas. 4 Ad meridiem vero sunt Hevæi, omnis terra Chanaan, et Maara Sidoniorum, usque Apheca et terminos Amorrhæi, 5 ejusque confinia.

13 1 Joshua was an old man and far advanced in age, and the Lord said to him: You have grown old and are advanced in years, and a very broad land has been left, which has not yet been divided by lot: 2 namely all Galilee, the Philistines, and all of the Geshurites. 3 From the turbid river that waters Egypt, as far as the borders of Ekron toward the north: the land of Canaan, which is divided among the five princes of the Philistines—the Gazites, and the Ashdodites, the Ascalonites, the Gittites, and the Ekronites. 4 But to the south are the Hivites, all the land of Canaan, and the Mearah of the Sidonians, unto Aphek and the borders of the Amorite, 5 and its confines.

Libani quoque regio contra orientem, a Baalgad sub monte Hermon, donec ingrediaris Emath ; 6 omnium qui habitant in monte a Libano usque ad aquas Maserephoth, universique Sidonii. Ego sum qui delebo eos a facie filiorum Israël. Veniat ergo in partem hæreditatis Israël, sicut præcepi tibi. 7 Et nunc divide terram in possessionem novem tribubus, et dimidiæ tribui Manasse, 8 cum qua Ruben et Gad possederunt terram, quam tradidit eis Moyses famulus Domini trans fluenta Jordanis, ad orientalem plagam.

Likewise the region of Lebanon toward the east, from Baal-gad under Mount Hermon, until you enter Hamath ; 6 of all who dwell in the mountain from Lebanon as far as the waters of Maserephoth, and all the Sidonians. I am the one who will blot them out from before the face of the sons of Israel. Let it therefore come into the portion of the inheritance of Israel, as I commanded you. 7 And now divide the land into a possession for nine tribes, and for the half-tribe of Manasseh, 8 with which Reuben and Gad possessed the land that Moses, the servant of the Lord, handed over to them across the streams of the Jordan, on the eastern side.

9 From Aroer, which is situated
on the bank of the torrent Arnon, and in the midst of the valley, and all the plains
of Medeba, as far as Dibon, 10 and all the cities of Sihon, king of the Amorites, who
reigned in Heshbon, up to the borders of the sons of Ammon, 11 and Gilead, and
the border of Geshuri and Maacathi, and all Mount Hermon, and all Bashan,
as far as Salecah, 12 all the kingdom of Og in Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth
and Edrei—he was of the remnant of the Rephaim: and Moses struck them,
and destroyed them. 13 And the sons of Israel were unwilling to destroy Geshuri and
Maacathi: and they have dwelt in the midst of Israel unto the present day. 14
But to the tribe of Levi he did not give a possession: but the sacrifices and victims
of the Lord God of Israel—this is his inheritance—as he spoke to him.

15 Therefore Moses gave a possession to the tribe of the sons of Reuben according to their clans. 16 And their boundary was from Aroer, which is set on the bank of the torrent Arnon, and in the middle of the valley of the same torrent: the whole plain, which leads to Medaba, 17 and Hesebon, and all its villages, which are in the plains: also Dibon and Bamothbaal, and the town Baalmaon, 18 and Jassa, and Cedimoth, and Mephaath, 19 and Cariathaim, and Sabama, and Sarathasar on the mountain of the valley. 20 Bethphogor and Asedoth, Phasga and Bethiesimoth, 21 and all the cities of the plain, and all the kingdoms of Sehon king of the Amorrite, who reigned in Hesebon, whom Moses struck down, together with the princes of Madian: Hevaeum, and Recem, and Sur, and Hur, and Rebe, leaders of Sehon, inhabitants of the land. 22 And Balaam the son of Beor, the soothsayer, the sons of Israel killed with the sword, along with the others who were slain.

23 Factusque est terminus filiorum Ruben Jordanis fluvius. Hæc est possessio Rubenitarum per cognationes suas urbium et viculorum.

23 And the boundary of the sons of Reuben was the Jordan River. This is the possession of the Reubenites by their clans, of the cities and villages.

24 Deditque Moyses tribui Gad et filiis ejus per cognationes suas possessionem, cujus hæc divisio est. 25 Terminus Jaser, et omnes civitates Galaad, et dimidiam partem terræ filiorum Ammon, usque ad Aroër, quæ est contra Rabba, 26 et ab Hesebon usque Ramoth, Masphe et Betonim: et a Manaim usque ad terminos Dabir. 27 In valle quoque Betharan, et Bethnemra, et Socoth, et Saphon reliquam partem regni Sehon regis Hesebon: hujus quoque finis, Jordanis est, usque ad extremam partem maris Cenereth trans Jordanem ad orientalem plagam.

24 And Moses gave to the tribe of Gad and to his sons, according to their clans,
a possession, of which this is the division. 25 The boundary: Jaser, and all
the cities of Galaad, and half the land of the sons of Ammon, as far as
Aroër, which is opposite Rabba, 26 and from Hesebon as far as Ramoth, Masphe and
Betonim; and from Manaim as far as the borders of Dabir. 27 Also in the valley,
Betharan, and Bethnemra, and Socoth, and Saphon, the remaining part of the kingdom of Sehon
king of Hesebon; and its boundary too is the Jordan, as far as the farthest
part of the Sea of Cenereth beyond the Jordan on the eastern side.

28 Hæc est possessio filiorum Gad per familias suas, civitates et villæ earum.

28 This is the possession of the sons of Gad according to their families, their cities and their villages.

29 Dedit et dimidiæ tribui Manasse, filiisque ejus juxta cognationes suas, possessionem, 30 cujus hoc principium est: a Manaim universam Basan, et cuncta regna Og regis Basan, omnesque vicos Jair, qui sunt in Basan, sexaginta oppida: 31 et dimidiam partem Galaad, et Astaroth, et Edrai, urbes regni Og in Basan: filiis Machir, filii Manasse, dimidiæ parti filiorum Machir juxta cognationes suas. 32 Hanc possessionem divisit Moyses in campestribus Moab trans Jordanem contra Jericho ad orientalem plagam. 33 Tribui autem Levi non dedit possessionem: quoniam Dominus Deus Israël ipse est possessio ejus, ut locutus est illi.

29 He also gave to the half-tribe of Manasseh, and to his sons according to their clans, a possession, 30 whose beginning is this: from Mahanaim the whole of Bashan, and all the royal domain of Og, king of Bashan, and all the villages of Jair, which are in Bashan, sixty towns: 31 and half of Gilead, and Ashtaroth and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan: to the sons of Machir, the son of Manasseh, to the half part of the sons of Machir according to their clans. 32 This possession Moses divided on the plains of Moab beyond the Jordan, opposite Jericho, on the eastern side. 33 But to the tribe of Levi he did not give a possession: because the Lord God of Israel himself is his possession, as he spoke to him.

14 1 This is what the sons of Israel possessed in the land of Canaan, which Eleazar the priest, and Joshua son of Nun, and the chiefs of the families gave to them, according to the tribes of Israel: 2 dividing all by lot, as the Lord had commanded by the hand of Moses, to nine tribes and a half-tribe. 3 For to two tribes, and a half, Moses had given a possession beyond the Jordan, apart from the Levites, who received no land among their brothers: 4 but in their place the sons of Joseph succeeded, divided into two tribes, Manasseh and Ephraim: nor did the Levites receive another portion in the land, except cities for dwelling, and their suburbs for the feeding of their draft-animals and their flocks. 5 As the Lord had commanded Moses, so the sons of Israel did, and they divided the land.

6 Accesserunt itaque filii Juda ad Josue in Galgala, locutusque est ad eum Caleb filius Jephone Cenezæus: Nosti quid locutus sit Dominus ad Moysen hominem Dei de me et te in Cadesbarne. 7 Quadraginta annorum eram quando misit me Moyses famulus Domini de Cadesbarne, ut considerarem terram, nuntiavique ei quod mihi verum videbatur. 8 Fratres autem mei, qui ascenderant mecum, dissolverunt cor populi: et nihilominus ego secutus sum Dominum Deum meum.

6 Then the sons of Judah approached Joshua at Gilgal, and Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite spoke to him: You know what the Lord spoke to Moses, the man of God, about me and you at Kadesh-barnea. 7 I was forty years old when Moses, the servant of the Lord, sent me from Kadesh-barnea to survey the land, and I announced to him what seemed true to me. 8 But my brothers, who had gone up with me, made the heart of the people melt; nevertheless I followed the Lord my God.

9 Juravitque Moyses in die illo, dicens: Terra, quam calcavit pes tuus, erit possessio tua, et filiorum tuorum in æternum: quia secutus es Dominum Deum meum. 10 Concessit ergo Dominus vitam mihi, sicut pollicitus est, usque in præsentem diem. Quadraginta et quinque anni sunt, ex quo locutus est Dominus verbum istud ad Moysen, quando ambulabat Israël per solitudinem: hodie octoginta quinque annorum sum, 11 sic valens ut eo valebam tempore quando ad explorandum missus sum: illius in me temporis fortitudo usque hodie perseverat, tam ad bellandum quam ad gradiendum.

9 And Moses swore on that day, saying:
The land which your foot has trodden shall be your possession, and of your sons for
ever: because you have followed the Lord my God. 10 The Lord has therefore
granted life to me, as he promised, up to the present day. It is forty-five
years since the Lord spoke this word to Moses, when Israel was walking through the
wilderness: today I am eighty-five years old, 11 still as strong as I was at the time when I was sent to explore;
the fortitude of that time in me endures until today, as much for
warring as for marching.

12 Da ergo mihi montem istum, quem pollicitus est Dominus, te quoque audiente, in quo Enacim sunt, et urbes magnæ atque munitæ: si forte sit Dominus mecum, et potuero delere eos, sicut promisit mihi. 13 Benedixitque ei Josue, et tradidit ei Hebron in possessionem: 14 atque ex eo fuit Hebron Caleb filio Jephone Cenezæo usque in præsentem diem, quia secutus est Dominum Deum Israël. 15 Nomen Hebron ante vocabatur Cariath Arbe: Adam maximus ibi inter Enacim situs est: et terra cessavit a præliis. 15 1 Igitur sors filiorum Judæ per cognationes suas ista fuit: a termino Edom, desertum Sin, contra meridiem, et usque ad extremam partem australis plagæ. 2 Initium ejus a summitate maris salsissimi, et a lingua ejus, quæ respicit meridiem.

12 Give therefore to me this mountain, which the Lord promised, you also hearing, in which the Enacim are, and cities great and fortified: if perhaps the Lord be with me, and I shall be able to destroy them, as he promised me. 13 And Joshua blessed him, and gave to him Hebron as a possession: 14 and from then Hebron was to Caleb son of Jephone the Cenezite unto the present day, because he had followed the Lord God of Israel. 15 The name of Hebron before was called Cariath Arbe: Adam, the greatest there among the Enacim, has been laid: and the land ceased from battles. 15 1 Therefore the lot of the sons of Judah by their kinships was this: from the border of Edom, the desert of Sin, toward the south, and up to the utmost part of the southern region. 2 Its beginning is from the extremity of the most salty sea, and from its tongue which looks toward the south.

3 Egrediturque contra ascensum Scorpionis, et pertransit in Sina: ascenditque in Cadesbarne, et pervenit in Esron, ascendens ad Addar, et circuiens Carcaa, 4 atque inde pertransiens in Asemona, et perveniens ad torrentem Ægypti: eruntque termini ejus mare magnum. Hic erit finis meridianæ plagæ. 5 Ab oriente vero erit initium, mare salsissimum usque ad extrema Jordanis: et ea quæ respiciunt ad aquilonem, a lingua maris usque ad eumdem Jordanis fluvium. 6 Ascenditque terminus in Beth Hagla, et transit ab aquilone in Beth Araba, ascendens ad lapidem Boën filii Ruben: 7 et tendens usque ad terminos Debera de valle Achor, contra aquilonem respiciens Galgala, quæ est ex adverso ascensionis Adommim, ab australi parte torrentis: transitque aquas, quæ vocantur fons solis: et erunt exitus ejus ad fontem Rogel.

And it goes out against the ascent of the Scorpion, and passes through into Sin:
and it goes up into Cadesbarne, and comes to Esron, going up to Addar, and
circling Carcaa, 4 and from there passing through into Asemona, and coming to
the torrent of Egypt: and its boundaries shall be the great sea. Here shall be the end
of the southern quarter. 5 But from the east there shall be the beginning, the most salty sea as far
as the extremities of the Jordan; and those things which look toward the north, from the tongue of the sea
as far as that same river Jordan. 6 And the boundary goes up into Beth Hagla,
and passes on the north into Beth Araba, going up to the stone of Boën the son of
Reuben: 7 and stretching as far as the boundaries of Debera from the Valley of Achor, looking toward
the north to Galgala, which is over against the ascent of Adommim, on
the southern side of the torrent: and it passes the waters, which are called the fountain of the sun:
and its outlets shall be at the spring Rogel.

8 Ascenditque per convallem filii Ennom ex latere Jebusæi ad meridiem, hæc est Jerusalem: et inde se erigens ad verticem montis, qui est contra Geennom ad occidentem in summitate vallis Raphaim contra aquilonem: 9 pertransitque a vertice montis usque ad fontem aquæ Nephtoa: et pervenit usque ad vicos montis Ephron: inclinaturque in Baala, quæ est Cariathiarim, id est, urbs silvarum. 10 Et circuit de Baala contra occidentem, usque ad montem Seir : transitque juxta latus montis Jarim ad aquilonem in Cheslon: et descendit in Bethsames, transitque in Thamna. 11 Et pervenit contra aquilonem partis Accaron ex latere: inclinaturque Sechrona, et transit montem Baala: pervenitque in Jebneel, et magni maris contra occidentem fine concluditur.

And it went up through the valley of the son of Hinnom on the south side of the Jebusite, this is Jerusalem: and from there
rising to the summit of the mountain which is opposite Geennom to the west, at the head of the Valley of Rephaim toward the north: 9 and it passes from the top of the mountain to the spring of the water of Nephtoah: and it comes to the villages of Mount
Ephron: and it inclines to Baalah, which is Kiriath-jearim, that is, the city of forests. 10 And it goes around from Baalah toward the west, as far as Mount Seir:
and it passes along the side of Mount Jearim to the north into Cheslon: and it descends into Beth-shemesh, and passes into Timnah. 11 And it comes to the north of the part of Ekron on the side: and it inclines to Shicron, and passes Mount Baalah: and it comes to Jabneel, and is concluded at the Great Sea toward the west.

12 These are the boundaries of the sons of Judah all around, according to their clans.

13 Caleb vero filio Jephone dedit partem in medio filiorum Juda, sicut præceperat ei Dominus: Cariath Arbe patris Enac, ipsa est Hebron. 14 Delevitque ex ea Caleb tres filios Enac, Sesai et Ahiman et Tholmai de stirpe Enac. 15 Atque inde conscendens venit ad habitatores Dabir, quæ prius vocabatur Cariath Sepher, id est, civitas litterarum.

13 But to Caleb the son of Jephunneh he gave a portion in the midst of the sons of Judah, as the Lord had commanded him: Kiriath-arba, of the father of Anak—this is Hebron. 14 And Caleb drove out from there the three sons of Anak: Sheshai and Ahiman and Talmai, of the stock of Anak. 15 And from there, going up, he came to the inhabitants of Debir, which formerly was called Kiriath-sepher, that is, the city of letters.

16 Dixitque Caleb: Qui percusserit Cariath Sepher, et ceperit eam, dabo ei Axam filiam meam uxorem. 17 Cepitque eam Othoniel filius Cenez frater Caleb junior: deditque ei Axam filiam suam uxorem. 18 Quæ, cum pergerent simul, suasa est a viro suo ut peteret a patre suo agrum.

16 And Caleb said:
Whoever strikes Cariath Sepher and takes it, I will give him Axa
my daughter as wife. 17 And Othniel son of Kenaz, the younger brother of Caleb,
took it; and he gave him Axa his daughter as wife. 18 And she, as they were going
together, was persuaded by her husband to ask a field from her father.

Suspiravitque ut sedebat in asino: cui Caleb: Quid habes ? inquit. 19 At illa respondit: Da mihi benedictionem: terram australem et arentem dedisti mihi ; junge et irriguam. Dedit itaque ei Caleb irriguum superius et inferius.

And she sighed as she sat on the ass; and Caleb said to her, “What is the matter?” 19 But she replied, “Give me a benediction: you have given me an austral and arid land; add also well-watered land.” Therefore Caleb gave her the upper and the lower springs.

20 This is the possession of the tribe of the sons of Judah according to their kinships. 21 And the cities were at the furthest parts of the sons of Judah, near the borders of Edom to the south: Cabseel and Eder and Jagur, 22 and Cyna and Dimona and Adada, 23 and Cades and Asor and Jethnam, 24 Ziph and Telem and Baloth, 25 New Asor and Carioth, Hesron, this is Asor; 26 Amam, Sama, and Molada, 27 and Asergadda and Hassemon and Bethphelet, 28 and Hasersual and Beersabee and Baziothia, 29 and Baala and Jim and Esem, 30 and Eltholad and Cesil and Harma, 31 and Siceleg and Medemena and Sensenna, 32 Lebaoth and Selim and Aën and Remon. All the cities are twenty-nine, and their villages.

33 In campestribus vero: Estaol et Sarea et Asena, 34 et Zanoë et Ængannim et Taphua et Enaim, 35 et Jerimoth et Adullam, Socho et Azeca, 36 et Saraim et Adithaim et Gedera et Gederothaim: urbes quatuordecim, et villæ earum. 37 Sanan et Hadassa et Magdalgad, 38 Delean et Masepha et Jecthel, 39 Lachis et Bascath et Eglon, 40 Chebbon et Leheman et Cethlis, 41 et Gideroth et Bethdagon et Naama et Maceda: civitates sedecim, et villæ earum. 42 Labana et Ether et Asan, 43 Jephtha et Esna et Nesib, 44 et Ceila et Achzib et Maresa: civitates novem, et villæ earum.

Gaza with its villages and little hamlets, as far as the Brook of Egypt, and the Great Sea its boundary. 48 And in the hill-country: Samir and Jether and Socoth 49 and Danna and Cariathsenna, this is Dabir: 50 Anab and Istemo and Anim, 51 Gosen and Olon and Gilo: eleven cities and their villages. 52 Arab and Ruma and Esaan, 53 and Janum and Beththaphua and Apheca, 54 Athmatha, and Cariath Arbe, this is Hebron, and Sior: nine cities, and their villages.

55 Maon et Carmel et Ziph et Jota, 56 Jezraël et Jucadam et Zanoë, 57 Accain, Gabaa et Thamna: civitates decem et villæ earum. 58 Halhul, et Besur, et Gedor, 59 Mareth, et Bethanoth, et Eltecon: civitates sex et villæ earum. 60 Cariathbaal, hæc est Cariathiarim urbs silvarum, et Arebba: civitates duæ, et villæ earum.

61 In the desert
Beth-arabah, Middin, and Secacah, 62 and Nibshan, and the City of Salt, and
En-gedi: six cities, and their villages. 63 But the Jebusite, the inhabitant of
Jerusalem, the sons of Judah were not able to destroy: and the Jebusite has dwelt with
the sons of Judah in Jerusalem until the present day. 16 1 Moreover the lot of the sons of Joseph fell from the Jordan opposite Jericho and its waters on the east
: the wilderness which goes up from Jericho to the mountain of Bethel: 2 and it goes out from
Bethel to Luz: and it passes by the border of the Archite, Ataroth: 3 and it descends to the
west beside the border of the Japhletite, as far as the borders of Lower Beth-horon, and Gezer:
and its regions are bounded by the Great Sea: 4 and the sons of Joseph, Manasseh and Ephraim, possessed.

5 Et factus est terminus filiorum Ephraim per cognationes suas: et possessio eorum contra orientem Ataroth Addar usque Beth-horon superiorem. 6 Egrediunturque confinia in mare: Machmethath vero aquilonem respicit, et circuit terminos contra orientem in Thanathselo: et pertransit ab oriente Janoë. 7 Descenditque de Janoë in Ataroth et Naaratha: et pervenit in Jericho, egrediturque ad Jordanem. 8 De Taphua pertransit contra mare in vallem arundineti, suntque egressus ejus in mare salsissimum.

5 And the boundary of the sons of Ephraim was made according to their clans: and their possession on the east was from Ataroth-addar as far as Upper Beth-horon. 6 And the confines go out to the sea: but Machmethath looks toward the north, and it circles the boundaries toward the east at Thanathselo: and it passes by from the east of Janoë. 7 And it descends from Janoë to Ataroth and Naaratha: and it comes to Jericho, and goes out to the Jordan. 8 From Taphua it passes toward the sea into the valley of the reed-bed, and its outgoings are into the most salty sea.

Hæc est possessio tribus filiorum Ephraim per familias suas. 9 Urbesque separatæ sunt filiis Ephraim in medio possessionis filiorum Manasse, et villæ earum. 10 Et non interfecerunt filii Ephraim Chananæum, qui habitabat in Gazer: habitavitque Chananæus in medio Ephraim usque in diem hanc tributarius.

This is the possession of the tribe of the sons of Ephraim by their families. 9 And the cities were separated for the sons of Ephraim in the midst of the possession of the sons of Manasseh, and their villages. 10 And the sons of Ephraim did not slay the Canaanite who was dwelling in Gezer; and the Canaanite dwelt in the midst of Ephraim unto this day as a tributary.

17 1 Cecidit autem sors tribui Manasse (ipse enim est primogenitus Joseph): Machir primogenito Manasse patri Galaad, qui fuit vir pugnator, habuitque possessionem Galaad et Basan: 2 et reliquis filiorum Manasse juxta familias suas, filiis Abiezer, et filiis Helec, et filiis Esriel, et filiis Sechem, et filiis Hepher, et filiis Semida. Isti sunt filii Manasse filii Joseph, mares, per cognationes suas.

17 1 But the lot fell to the tribe of Manasseh (for he is Joseph’s firstborn): to Machir, the firstborn of Manasseh, the father of Gilead, who was a man of war, there fell the possession of Gilead and Bashan: 2 and to the rest of the sons of Manasseh according to their families, to the sons of Abiezer, and to the sons of Helek, and to the sons of Asriel, and to the sons of Shechem, and to the sons of Hepher, and to the sons of Shemida. These are the sons of Manasseh, the son of Joseph, males, according to their clans.

3 Salphaad vero filio Hepher filii Galaad filii Machir filii Manasse non erant filii, sed solæ filiæ: quarum ista sunt nomina: Maala et Noa et Hegla et Melcha et Thersa. 4 Veneruntque in conspectu Eleazari sacerdotis, et Josue filii Nun, et principum, dicentes: Dominus præcepit per manum Moysi, ut daretur nobis possessio in medio fratrum nostrorum. Deditque eis juxta imperium Domini possessionem in medio fratrum patris earum.

3 But to Salphaad son of Hepher, son of Galaad, son of Machir, son of Manasse there were not sons, but only daughters: of whom these are the names: Maala and Noa and Hegla and Melcha and Thersa. 4 And they came into the sight of Eleazar the priest, and Joshua son of Nun, and the princes, saying: The Lord commanded by the hand of Moses, that a possession be given to us in the midst of our brothers And he gave to them, according to the command of the Lord, a possession in the midst of the brothers of their father.

5 Et ceciderunt funiculi Manasse, decem, absque terra Galaad et Basan trans Jordanem. 6 Filiæ enim Manasse possederunt hæreditatem in medio filiorum ejus. Terra autem Galaad cecidit in sortem filiorum Manasse qui reliqui erant.

5 And the lot-lines of Manasseh fell, ten, apart from
the land of Gilead and Bashan across the Jordan. 6 For the daughters of Manasseh possessed
an inheritance in the midst of his sons. But the land of Gilead fell by lot to the portion
of the sons of Manasseh who were the rest.

7 Fuitque terminus Manasse ab Aser, Machmethath quæ respicit Sichem: et egreditur ad dexteram juxta habitatores fontis Taphuæ. 8 Etenim in sorte Manasse ceciderat terra Taphuæ, quæ est juxta terminos Manasse filiorum Ephraim. 9 Descenditque terminus vallis arundineti in meridiem torrentis civitatum Ephraim, quæ in medio sunt urbium Manasse: terminus Manasse ab aquilone torrentis, et exitus ejus pergit ad mare: 10 ita ut possessio Ephraim sit ab austro, et ab aquilone Manasse, et utramque claudat mare, et conjungantur sibi in tribu Aser ab aquilone, et in tribu Issachar ab oriente. 11 Fuitque hæreditas Manasse in Issachar et in Aser, Bethsan et viculi ejus, et Jeblaam cum viculis suis, et habitatores Dor cum oppidis suis, habitatores quoque Endor cum viculis suis: similiterque habitatores Thenac cum viculis suis, et habitatores Mageddo cum viculis suis, et tertia pars urbis Nopheth.

7 And the boundary of Manasseh was from Asher to Machmethath, which faces Shechem; and it goes out to the right near the inhabitants of the spring of Tappuah. 8 For in the lot of Manasseh the land of Tappuah had fallen, which is next to the borders of Manasseh, of the sons of Ephraim. 9 And the boundary goes down to the valley of the reed-bed to the south of the brook; the cities of Ephraim, which are in the midst of the cities of Manasseh. The boundary of Manasseh is on the north of the brook, and its outgoings go to the sea: 10 so that the possession of Ephraim is on the south, and of Manasseh on the north, and the sea encloses both, and they are joined to each other in the tribe of Asher on the north, and in the tribe of Issachar on the east. 11 And the inheritance of Manasseh was in Issachar and in Asher: Beth-shean and its villages, and Ibleam with its villages, and the inhabitants of Dor with their towns, the inhabitants also of Endor with their villages; likewise the inhabitants of Taanach with their villages, and the inhabitants of Megiddo with their villages, and the third part of the city Nopheth.

12 Nec potuerunt filii Manasse has civitates subvertere, sed cœpit Chananæus habitare in terra sua. 13 Postquam autem convaluerunt filii Israël, subjecerunt Chananæos, et fecerunt sibi tributarios, nec interfecerunt eos.

12 Nor were the sons of Manasseh able to overthrow these cities, but the Canaanite began to dwell in his land. 13 But after the sons of Israel had grown strong, they subjected the Canaanites, and made them tributary to themselves, and did not kill them.

14 And the sons of Joseph spoke to Joshua and said: Why have you given me a possession of one lot and one measuring-cord, since I am of so great a multitude, and the Lord has blessed me? 15 To whom Joshua said: If you are a numerous people, go up into the forest, and cut down for yourself spaces in the land of the Perizzite and the Rephaim; for the possession of Mount Ephraim is too narrow for you. 16 To whom the sons of Joseph answered: We shall not be able to ascend to the mountains, since the Canaanites use iron chariots, who dwell in the level land, in which are situated Bethsan with its villages, and Jezreel, possessing the middle of the valley. 17 And Joshua said to the house of Joseph, to Ephraim and Manasseh: You are a numerous people, and of great strength; you shall not have one lot, 18 but you shall cross to the mountain, and you shall cut down for yourself, and you shall clear spaces for habitation: and you will be able to go further when you have overthrown the Canaanite, whom you say has iron chariots, and is very strong.

18 1 And all the sons of Israel were gathered together in Shiloh, and there they fixed the tabernacle
of testimony, and the land was subject to them. 2 Now there remained of the sons
of Israel seven tribes, which had not yet received their possessions. 3 To whom
Joshua said: How long do you languish in sluggishness, and do not enter to possess the
land, which the Lord God of your fathers has given to you ? 4 Choose from
each of the tribes three men, that I may send them, and let them go and
go around the land, and describe it according to the number of each
multitude: and let them report back to me what they have described.

5 Dividite vobis terram in septem partes: Judas sit in terminis suis ab australi plaga, et domus Joseph ab aquilone. 6 Mediam inter hos terram in septem partes describite: et huc venietis ad me, ut coram Domino Deo vestro mittam vobis hic sortem: 7 quia non est inter vos pars Levitarum, sed sacerdotium Domini est eorum hæreditas. Gad autem et Ruben, et dimidia tribus Manasse, jam acceperant possessiones suas trans Jordanem ad orientalem plagam, quas dedit eis Moyses famulus Domini.

5 Divide the land for yourselves into seven parts: Judah shall be in his boundaries on the southern quarter, and the house of Joseph on the north. 6 Describe the land between these in seven parts: and you shall come here to me, that in the presence of the Lord your God I may cast the lot for you here: 7 because there is not a portion among you for the Levites, but the priesthood of the Lord is their inheritance. But Gad and Reuben, and the half-tribe of Manasseh, had already received their possessions across the Jordan on the oriental side, which Moses, the servant of the Lord, gave to them.

8 Cumque surrexissent viri, ut pergerent ad describendam terram, præcepit eis Josue, dicens: Circuite terram, et describite eam, ac revertimini ad me : ut hic coram Domino, in Silo, mittam vobis sortem. 9 Itaque perrexerunt: et lustrantes eam, in septem partes diviserunt, scribentes in volumine. Reversique sunt ad Josue in castra Silo.

8 And when
the men had arisen, to go on to describe the land, Joshua instructed them,
saying: Go around the land, and describe it, and return to me
: that here before the Lord, in Shiloh, I may cast the lot for you. 9 And so
they went on: and, surveying it, they divided it into seven parts, writing
in a volume. And they returned to Joshua in the camp at Shiloh.

11 Et ascendit sors prima filiorum Benjamin per familias suas, ut possiderent terram inter filios Juda et filios Joseph. 12 Fuitque terminus eorum contra aquilonem a Jordane: pergens juxta latus Jericho septentrionalis plagæ, et inde contra occidentem ad montana conscendens et perveniens ad solitudinem Bethaven, 13 atque pertransiens juxta Luzam ad meridiem, ipsa est Bethel: descenditque in Ataroth Addar, in montem qui est ad meridiem Beth-horon inferioris: 14 et inclinatur circuiens contra mare ad meridiem montis qui respicit Beth-horon contra Africum: suntque exitus ejus in Cariath-baal, quæ vocatur et Cariathiarim, urbem filiorum Juda. Hæc est plaga contra mare, ad occidentem.

11 And the first lot went up for the sons of Benjamin according to their families, that they might possess the land between the sons of Judah and the sons of Joseph. 12 And their boundary was against the north from the Jordan, proceeding along the side of Jericho on the northern quarter, and from there climbing to the mountains toward the west and arriving at the wilderness of Beth-aven, 13 and passing by Luz on the south— this is Bethel; and it descended to Ataroth-addar, to the mountain that is to the south of Lower Beth-horon; 14 and it inclines, going around, toward the sea to the south of the mountain that looks toward Beth-horon, toward Africus; and its goings-out are at Cariath-baal, which is also called Cariathiarim, a city of the sons of Judah. This is the side toward the sea, to the west.

15 A meridie autem ex parte Cariathiarim egreditur terminus contra mare, et pervenit usque ad fontem aquarum Nephtoa. 16 Descenditque in partem montis, qui respicit vallem filiorum Ennom: et est contra septentrionalem plagam in extrema parte vallis Raphaim. Descenditque in Geennom (id est, vallem Ennom) juxta latus Jebusæi ad austrum: et pervenit ad fontem Rogel, 17 transiens ad aquilonem, et egrediens ad Ensemes, id est, fontem solis: 18 et pertransit usque ad tumulos, qui sunt e regione ascensus Adommim: descenditque ad Abenboën, id est, lapidem Boën filii Ruben: et pertransit ex latere aquilonis ad campestria: descenditque in planitiem, 19 et prætergreditur contra aquilonem Beth Hagla: suntque exitus ejus contra linguam maris salsissimi ab aquilone in fine Jordanis ad australem plagam: 20 qui est terminus illius ab oriente.

From the south, however, on the side of Kiriath-jearim, the boundary goes out toward the sea, and reaches as far as the spring of the waters of Nephtoa. And it descends to the part of the mountain that looks toward the valley of the sons of Hinnom; and it is toward the northern region at the far end of the valley of Rephaim. And it descends into Geennom (that is, the valley of Ennom) alongside the flank of the Jebusite to the south: and it comes to the spring Rogel, passing to the north, and going out to En-shemesh, that is, the spring of the sun: and it passes on as far as the tumuli which are opposite the ascent of Adummim: and it descends to Abenboën, that is, the stone of Boën the son of Reuben: and it passes by on the north side to the champaign: and it descends into the plain, and it goes beyond, to the north, Beth Hagla: and its outlets are toward the tongue of the most salty sea on the north at the end of the Jordan on the southern region: which is its boundary from the east.

Hæc est possessio filiorum Benjamin per terminos suos in circuitu, et familias suas.

This is the possession of the sons of Benjamin according to their boundaries all around, and their families.

the second lot of the sons of Simeon by their clans: and the inheritance 2
of them in the midst of the possession of the sons of Judah: Bersabee and Sabee and Molada
3 and Hasersual, Bala and Asem 4 and Eltholad, Bethul and Harma 5 and Siceleg
and Bethmarchaboth and Hasersusa 6 and Bethlebaoth and Sarohen: cities
thirteen, and their villages. 7 Ain and Remmon and Athar and Asan: cities
four, and their villages: 8 all the hamlets around these cities
as far as Baalath Beer Ramath toward the southern quarter. This is the inheritance
of the sons of Simeon according to their clans, 9 in the possession and allotment
of the sons of Judah: because it was larger, and therefore the sons of Simeon possessed in
the midst of their inheritance.

10 Ceciditque sors tertia filiorum Zabulon per cognationes suas: factus est terminus possessionis eorum usque Sarid. 11 Ascenditque de mari et Merala, et pervenit in Debbaseth, usque ad torrentem qui est contra Jeconam. 12 Et revertitur de Sared contra orientem in fines Ceseleththabor: et egreditur ad Dabereth, ascenditque contra Japhie.

10 And the third lot fell for the sons of Zabulon according to their kindreds: the boundary of their possession extended as far as Sarid. 11 And it went up from the sea and from Merala, and came to Debbaseth, as far as the torrent which is opposite Jeconam. 12 And it turns back from Sared toward the east to the borders of Ceseleththabor; and it goes out to Dabereth, and ascends toward Japhie.

13 And from there it passes as far as the eastern region of Gethepher and Thacasin; and it goes out to Remmon, Amthar and Noa. 14 And it circles to the north toward Hanathon : and its goings-out are the valley of Jephthael, 15 and Cateth and Naalol and Semeron and Jerala and Bethlehem: twelve cities, and their villages. 16 This is the inheritance of the tribe of the sons of Zabulon according to their clans, the cities and their villages.

17 Issachar egressa est sors quarta per cognationes suas: 18 fuitque ejus hæreditas Jezraël et Casaloth et Sunem 19 et Hapharaim et Seon, et Anaharath 20 et Rabboth et Cesion, Abes, 21 et Rameth, et Engannim, et Enhadda et Bethpheses. 22 Et pervenit terminus ejus usque Thabor et Sehesima et Bethsames, eruntque exitus ejus Jordanis: civitates sedecim, et villæ earum. 23 Hæc est possessio filiorum Issachar per cognationes suas, urbes et viculi earum.

17 The fourth lot came out for Issachar by their clans: 18 and its inheritance was Jezraël and Casaloth and Sunem, 19 and Hapharaim and Seon and Anaharath, 20 and Rabboth and Cesion, Abes, 21 and Rameth, and Engannim, and Enhadda and Bethpheses. 22 And its boundary reached to Tabor and Sehesima and Bethsames, and its goings out were the Jordan: sixteen cities, and their villages. 23 This is the possession of the sons of Issachar by their clans, the cities and their villages.

24 Ceciditque sors quinta tribui filiorum Aser per cognationes suas: 25 fuitque terminus eorum Halcath et Chali et Beten et Axaph 26 et Elmelech et Amaad et Messal: et pervenit usque ad Carmelum maris et Sihor et Labanath, 27 ac revertitur contra orientem Bethdagon: et pertransit usque Zabulon et vallem Jephthaël contra aquilonem in Bethemec et Nehiel. Egrediturque ad lævam Cabul, 28 et Abran et Rohob et Hamon et Cana, usque ad Sidonem magnam. 29 Revertiturque in Horma usque ad civitatem munitissimam Tyrum, et usque Hosa: eruntque exitus ejus in mare de funiculo Achziba: 30 et Amma et Aphec et Rohob: civitates viginti duæ, et villæ earum.

24 And the fifth lot fell to the tribe of the sons of Asher according to their kinships: 25 and their boundary was Halcath and Chali and Beten and Axaph 26 and Elmelech and Amaad and Messal; and it reached as far as Carmel of the sea and Sihor and Labanath, 27 and it turns back toward the east to Bethdagon; and it passes as far as Zabulon and the valley of Jephthaël toward the north at Bethemec and Nehiel. And it goes out to the left to Cabul, 28 and Abran and Rohob and Hamon and Cana, as far as great Sidon. 29 And it returns to Horma up to the most fortified city Tyre, and as far as Hosa; and its outlets will be into the sea at the cord of Achziba: 30 and Amma and Aphec and Rohob: twenty-two cities, and their villages.

31 Hæc est possessio filiorum Aser per cognationes suas, urbesque et viculi earum.

32 The sixth lot fell for the sons of Naphtali by their families: 33 and the boundary began from Heleph and Elon in Zaanannim, and Adami, which is Nekeb, and Jabneel up to Lakum; and their going out to the Jordan: 34 and the boundary turns back westward to Aznoth-tabor, and from there goes out to Hukok, and passes into Zebulun to the south, and into Asher to the west, and into Judah at the Jordan toward the sunrise: 35 the most fortified cities, Ziddim, Zer, and Hammath, and Rakkath and Chinnereth, 36 and Adamah and Ramah, Hazor, 37 and Kedesh and Edrei, En-hazor, 38 and Iron and Migdal-el, Horem and Beth-anath and Beth-shemesh: nineteen cities, and their villages. 39 This is the possession of the tribe of the sons of Naphtali by their families, their cities and their hamlets.

40 Tribui filiorum Dan per familias suas egressa est sors septima: 41 et fuit terminus possessionis ejus Sara et Esthaol, et Hirsemes, id est, civitas solis. 42 Selebin et Ajalon et Jethela, 43 Elon et Themna et Acron, 44 Elthece, Gebbethon et Balaath, 45 et Jud et Bane et Barach et Gethremmon: 46 et Mejarcon et Arecon, cum termino qui respicit Joppen, 47 et ipso fine concluditur. 40 For the tribe of the sons of Dan, by their families, the seventh lot went forth: 41 and the boundary of its possession was Sara and Esthaol, and Hirsemes, that is, city of the sun. 42 Selebin and Ajalon and Jethela, 43 Elon and Themna and Acron, 44 Elthece, Gebbethon and Balaath, 45 and Jud and Bane and Barach and Gethremmon: 46 and Mejarcon and Arecon, with the boundary that looks toward Joppen, 47 and it is concluded at that very end. And the sons of Dan went up and fought against Lesem, and they took it: and they struck it with the edge of the sword, and they possessed it and dwelt in it, calling its name Lesem Dan, from the name of Dan their father.

49 And when he had completed dividing the land by lot to each according to their tribes, the sons of Israel gave a possession to Joshua the son of Nun in their midst, 50 according to the precept of the Lord, the city which he asked for, Thamnath Saraa on Mount Ephraim; and he built the city and dwelt in it. 51 These are the possessions which Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun, and the princes of the families and tribes of the sons of Israel in Shiloh, before the Lord at the entrance of the tabernacle of testimony, divided by lot; and they apportioned the land. 20 1 And the Lord spoke to Joshua, saying: Speak to the sons of Israel, and say to them: 2 Set apart the cities of fugitives, of which I spoke to you by the hand of Moses: 3 that whoever has struck down a person unwittingly may flee to them, and may be able to escape the wrath of the next of kin, who is the avenger of blood: 4 when he has fled to one of these cities, he shall stand before the gate of the city, and shall speak to the elders of that city the things which prove him innocent; and thus they shall receive him, and shall give him a place to dwell. 5 And when the avenger of blood shall have pursued him, they shall not deliver him into his hands, because he struck his neighbor in ignorance, nor is he proved to have been his enemy previously for two or three days.

6 Et habitabit in civitate illa, donec stet ante judicium, causam reddens facti sui, et moriatur sacerdos magnus, qui fuerit in illo tempore: tunc revertetur homicida, et ingredietur civitatem et domum suam de qua fugerat. 7 Decreveruntque Cedes in Galilæa montis Nephthali, et Sichem in monte Ephraim, et Cariatharbe, ipsa est Hebron in monte Juda. 8 Et trans Jordanem contra orientalem plagam Jericho, statuerunt Bosor, quæ sita est in campestri solitudine de tribu Ruben, et Ramoth in Galaad de tribu Gad, et Gaulon in Basan de tribu Manasse.

6 And he shall dwell in that city, until he stands before judgment, rendering account for his deed, and the High Priest who shall be in that time dies: then the manslayer shall return, and shall enter the city and his own house from which he had fled. 7 And they decreed Kedesh in Galilee of Mount Naphtali, and Shechem on Mount Ephraim, and Kiriath-arba, the same is Hebron, on Mount Judah. 8 And across the Jordan opposite the eastern side of Jericho, they appointed Bezer, which is situated in the level wilderness of the tribe of Reuben, and Ramoth in Gilead of the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan of the tribe of Manasseh.

9 Hæ civitates constitutæ sunt cunctis filiis Israël, et advenis qui habitabant inter eos, ut fugeret ad eas qui animam nescius percussisset, et non moreretur in manu proximi, effusum sanguinem vindicare cupientis, donec staret ante populum expositurus causam suam. 21 1 Accesseruntque principes familiarum Levi ad Eleazarum sacerdotem, et Josue filium Nun, et ad duces cognationum per singulas tribus filiorum Israël: 2 locutique sunt ad eos in Silo terræ Chanaan, atque dixerunt: Dominus præcepit per manum Moysi, ut darentur nobis urbes ad habitandum, et suburbana earum ad alenda jumenta. 3 Dederuntque filii Israël de possessionibus suis juxta imperium Domini, civitates et suburbana earum.

9 These cities were established for all the sons of Israel, and
for the sojourners who dwelt among them, that whoever had struck down a life unwittingly
might flee to them, and not die by the hand of the next-of-kin, eager to vindicate the shed blood,
until he should stand before the people to set forth his cause. 21 1 And the princes of the families of Levi approached Eleazar the priest,
and Joshua son of Nun, and the leaders of the kindreds for each of the tribes
of the sons of Israel: 2 and they spoke to them in Shiloh of the land of Canaan, and
said: The Lord commanded by the hand of Moses, that cities be given to us to dwell in, and their suburbs for the feeding of beasts of burden.
3 And the sons of Israel gave from their possessions, according to the command of the Lord, cities and their suburbs.

4 And the lot went out to the family of Kohath of the sons of Aaron
the priest, from the tribes of Judah, and Simeon, and Benjamin, thirteen cities
: 5 and to the rest of the sons of Kohath, that is, to the Levites, who had been left, from
the tribes of Ephraim, and Dan, and the half-tribe of Manasseh, ten cities. 6
Moreover for the sons of Gershon the lot went out, that they might receive from the tribes of Issachar
and Asher and Naphtali, and the half-tribe of Manasseh in Bashan, cities
in number thirteen. 7 And for the sons of Merari, according to their clans, from the tribes of
Reuben and Gad and Zebulun, twelve cities.

8 And the sons of Israel
gave to the Levites cities and their suburbs, as the Lord commanded by the hand
of Moses, assigning to each by lot. 9 From the tribes of the sons of Judah and Simeon
Joshua gave cities, whose names are these, 10 to the sons of Aaron of
the families of Kohath of Levitical stock (for the first lot had come out for them), 11
Kiriath-arba, the father of Anak, which is called Hebron, in the mountain of Judah, and its suburbs
round about. 12 But its fields and its villages Caleb son of Jephunneh had given
to possess.

13 Dedit ergo filiis Aaron sacerdotis Hebron confugii civitatem, ac suburbana ejus: et Lobnam cum suburbanis suis: 14 et Jether, et Esthemo, 15 et Holon, et Dabir, 16 et Ain, et Jeta, et Bethsames, cum suburbanis suis: civitates novem de tribubus, ut dictum est, duabus. 17 De tribu autem filiorum Benjamin, Gabaon, et Gabæ, 18 et Anathoth et Almon, cum suburbanis suis: civitates quatuor. 19 Omnes simul civitates filiorum Aaron sacerdotis, tredecim, cum suburbanis suis.

13 Therefore he gave to the sons of Aaron the priest Hebron,
a city of refuge, and its suburbs: and Lobna with its own suburbs:
14 and Jether, and Esthemo,
15 and Holon, and Dabir,
16 and Ain, and Jeta, and Bethsames, with their own suburbs: nine cities from the two tribes, as it was said.
17 But from the tribe of the sons of Benjamin, Gabaon, and Gabae,
18 and Anathoth and Almon, with their own suburbs: four cities.
19 All together the cities of the sons of Aaron the priest, thirteen, with their own suburbs.

20 But to the rest, by families, of the sons of Kohath of the Levitical line, this
possession was given. 21 From the tribe of Ephraim, the cities of refuge, Shechem with
its suburbs on Mount Ephraim, and Gezer, 22 and Kibzaim and Beth-horon,
with their suburbs, four cities. 23 Also from the tribe of Dan, Eltekeh
and Gibbethon, 24 and Aijalon and Gath-rimmon, with their suburbs, four
cities.

were given to the sons of Caath of the lower grade. 27 To the sons also of Gerson
of the Levitical stock he gave from the half-tribe of Manasse cities of refuge,
Gaulon in Basan, and Bosram, with their suburbs, two cities. 28
Moreover, from the tribe of Issachar, Cesion, and Dabereth, 29 and Jaramoth, and
Engannim, with their suburbs, four cities.

Asher, Masal and Abdon, 31 and Helkath, and Rehob, with their suburbs,
four cities. 32 Also from the tribe of Naphtali, the cities of refuge,
Kedesh in Galilee, and Hammoth-dor, and Kartan, with their suburbs,
three cities. 33 All the cities of the families of Gershon, thirteen, with
their suburbs.

34 But to the sons of Merari, Levites of the lower rank, according to their families there was given from the tribe of Zabulon: Jecnam and Cartha, 35 and Damna and Naalol, four cities with their suburbs. 36 From the tribe of Ruben, beyond the Jordan opposite Jericho, cities of refuge: Bosor in the wilderness, Misor and Jaser and Jethson and Mephaath, four cities with their suburbs. 37 From the tribe of Gad, cities of refuge: Ramoth in Galaad, and Manaim and Hesebon and Jazer, four cities with their suburbs.

38 Omnes urbes filiorum Merari per familias et cognationes suas, duodecim. 39 Itaque civitates universæ Levitarum in medio possessionis filiorum Israël fuerunt quadraginta octo 40 cum suburbanis suis, singulæ per familias distributæ.

38 All the cities
of the sons of Merari, by their families and their cognations, were twelve. 39 And thus
the universal cities of the Levites in the midst of the possession of the sons of Israel
were forty-eight 40 with their suburbs, each distributed by families.

41 Deditque Dominus Deus Israëli omnem terram, quam traditurum se patribus eorum juraverat: et possederunt illam, atque habitaverunt in ea. 42 Dataque est ab eo pax in omnes per circuitum nationes: nullusque eis hostium resistere ausus est, sed cuncti in eorum ditionem redacti sunt. 43 Ne unum quidem verbum, quod illis præstiturum se esse promiserat, irritum fuit, sed rebus expleta sunt omnia. 22 1 Eodem tempore vocavit Josue Rubenitas, et Gaditas, et dimidiam tribum Manasse, 2 dixitque ad eos: Fecistis omnia quæ præcepit vobis Moyses famulus Domini: mihi quoque in omnibus obedistis, 3 nec reliquistis fratres vestros longo tempore, usque in præsentem diem, custodientes imperium Domini Dei vestri.

41 And the Lord God gave to Israel all the land which he had sworn to deliver to
their fathers; and they possessed it, and dwelt in
it. 42 And peace was given by him against all the nations round about; and none
of their enemies dared to withstand them, but all were brought under their
dominion. 43 Not even one word, which he had promised that he would perform
for them, was made void, but all things were fulfilled in reality. 22 1 At the
same time Joshua called the Reubenites, and the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh,
2 and said to them: You have done all that Moses the servant
of the Lord commanded you; to me also you have been obedient in all things,
3 and you have not left your brothers for a long time, even to this present day, keeping the command
of the Lord your God.

4 Quia igitur dedit Dominus Deus vester fratribus vestris quietem et pacem, sicut pollicitus est: revertimini, et ite in tabernacula vestra, et in terram possessionis, quam tradidit vobis Moyses famulus Domini trans Jordanem: 5 ita dumtaxat ut custodiatis attente, et opere compleatis mandatum et legem quam præcepit vobis Moyses famulus Domini, ut diligatis Dominum Deum vestrum, et ambuletis in omnibus viis ejus, et observetis mandata illius, adhæreatisque ei, ac serviatis in omni corde, et in omni anima vestra. 6 Benedixitque eis Josue, et dimisit eos. Qui reversi sunt in tabernacula sua.

4 Since therefore the Lord your God has given your brothers
rest and peace, as he promised: return, and go into
your tabernacles, and into the land of possession, which Moses
the servant of the Lord gave to you beyond the Jordan: 5 only provided that you carefully keep,
and in deed complete, the commandment and the law which Moses the servant of the Lord commanded you,
that you love the Lord your God, and walk in all his ways,
and observe his commandments, and adhere to him, and
serve him with all your heart, and with all your soul. 6 And Joshua blessed them,
and sent them away. And they returned to their tabernacles.

7 Dimidiæ autem tribui Manasse possessionem Moyses dederat in Basan: et idcirco mediæ, quæ superfuit, dedit Josue sortem inter ceteros fratres suos trans Jordanem ad occidentalem plagam. Cumque dimitteret eos in tabernacula sua, et benedixisset eis, 8 dixit ad eos: In multa substantia atque divitiis revertimini ad sedes vestras, cum argento et auro, ære ac ferro, et veste multiplici: dividite prædam hostium cum fratribus vestris. 9 Reversique sunt, et abierunt filii Ruben, et filii Gad, et dimidia tribus Manasse, a filiis Israël de Silo, quæ sita est in Chanaan, ut intrarent Galaad terram possessionis suæ, quam obtinuerant juxta imperium Domini in manu Moysi.

7 But to the half-tribe
of Manasseh Moses had given a possession in Bashan; and therefore
to the half that remained, Joshua gave a lot among his other brothers
across the Jordan toward the western quarter. And when he was dismissing them to
their tents and had blessed them, 8 he said to them: With much
substance and riches return to your dwellings, with silver and
gold, bronze and iron, and with manifold clothing: divide the spoil of the enemies with
your brothers. 9 And they returned, and the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad, and the half-
tribe of Manasseh, departed from the sons of Israel from Shiloh, which is situated in Canaan, to
enter Gilead, the land of their possession, which they had obtained according to
the command of the Lord by the hand of Moses.

10 Cumque venissent ad tumulos Jordanis in terram Chanaan, ædificaverunt juxta Jordanem altare infinitæ magnitudinis. 11 Quod cum audissent filii Israël, et ad eos certi nuntii detulissent, ædificasse filios Ruben, et Gad, et dimidiæ tribus Manasse, altare in terra Chanaan, super Jordanis tumulos, contra filios Israël: 12 convenerunt omnes in Silo, ut ascenderent, et dimicarent contra eos. 13 Et interim miserunt ad illos in terram Galaad Phinees filium Eleazari sacerdotis, 14 et decem principes cum eo, singulos de singulis tribubus.

10 And when they had come to the banks of the Jordan
in the land of Canaan, they built beside the Jordan an altar of boundless
magnitude. 11 Which when the sons of Israel had heard, and sure messengers
had brought word to them that the sons of Reuben and Gad, and the half tribe of Manasseh,
had built an altar in the land of Canaan, upon the banks of the Jordan, over against the sons of Israel:
12 they all assembled in Shiloh, to go up and fight against them. 13 And meanwhile they sent to them into the land of Gilead Phinehas, son of Eleazar
the priest, 14 and ten princes with him, one from each of the tribes.

15 Qui venerunt ad filios Ruben, et Gad, et dimidiæ tribus Manasse in terram Galaad, dixeruntque ad eos: 16 Hæc mandat omnis populus Domini: Quæ est ista transgressio ? cur reliquistis Dominum Deum Israël, ædificantes altare sacrilegum, et a cultu illius recedentes? 17 an parum vobis est quod peccastis in Beelphegor, et usque in præsentem diem macula hujus sceleris in nobis permanet, multique de populo corruerunt ? 18 Et vos hodie reliquistis Dominum, et cras in universum Israël ira ejus desæviet. 19 Quod si putatis immundam esse terram possessionis vestræ, transite ad terram, in qua tabernaculum Domini est, et habitate inter nos: tantum ut a Domino et a nostro consortio non recedatis, ædificato altari præter altare Domini Dei nostri.

They came to the sons of Reuben and Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh in the land of Gilead, and said to them: “Thus commands all the people of the Lord: What is this transgression? Why have you forsaken the Lord God of Israel, building a sacrilegious altar and withdrawing from his cult? Is it too little for you that you sinned at Baal-peor, and to this present day the stain of this crime remains upon us, and many of the people fell? And you today have forsaken the Lord, and tomorrow his wrath will rage fiercely against all Israel. But if you think the land of your possession to be unclean, cross over to the land in which the tabernacle of the Lord is, and dwell among us—only do not withdraw from the Lord and from our fellowship by building an altar besides the altar of the Lord our God.”

20 Nonne Achan filius Zare præteriit mandatum Domini, et super omnem populum Israël ira ejus incubuit ? et ille erat unus homo, atque utinam solum periisset in scelere suo.

20 Did not Achan son
of Zare transgress the mandate of the Lord, and did his ire upon all the people of Israel settle ? and he was one man, and would that he had perished alone in
his crime.

21 Responderuntque filii Ruben et Gad, et dimidia tribus Manasse, principibus legationis Israël: 22 Fortissimus Deus Dominus, fortissimus Deus Dominus, ipse novit, et Israël simul intelliget: si prævaricationis animo hoc altare construximus, non custodiat nos, sed puniat nos in præsenti: 23 et si ea mente fecimus ut holocausta, et sacrificium, et pacificas victimas super eo imponeremus, ipse quærat et judicet: 24 et non ea magis cogitatione atque tractatu, ut diceremus: Cras dicent filii vestri filiis nostris: Quid vobis et Domino Deo Israël ? 25 terminum posuit Dominus inter nos et vos, o filii Ruben, et filii Gad, Jordanem fluvium, et idcirco partem non habetis in Domino: et per hanc occasionem avertent filii vestri filios nostros a timore Domini. Putavimus itaque melius, 26 et diximus: Exstruamus nobis altare, non in holocausta, neque ad victimas offerendas, 27 sed in testimonium inter nos et vos, et sobolem nostram vestramque progeniem, ut serviamus Domino, et juris nostri sit offerre et holocausta, et victimas, et pacificas hostias: et nequaquam dicant cras filii vestri filiis nostris: Non est vobis pars in Domino. 28 Quod si voluerint dicere, respondebunt eis: Ecce altare Domini, quod fecerunt patres nostri, non in holocausta, neque in sacrificium, sed in testimonium nostrum ac vestrum.

21 And the sons of Reuben and of Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh answered to the princes of the legation of Israel: 22 The most mighty God, the Lord, the most mighty God, the Lord, he knows, and Israel together shall understand: if with a spirit of transgression we have built this altar, let him not keep us, but punish us in the present; 23 and if we have done it with that mind, that we might place burnt-offerings and sacrifice and peace-victims upon it, let him himself seek it out and judge; 24 and not rather with this thought and design, that we might say: Tomorrow your sons will say to our sons: What have you to do with the Lord God of Israel? 25 The Lord has set a boundary between us and you, O sons of Reuben, and sons of Gad, the Jordan river, and therefore you have no part in the Lord: and by this occasion your sons will turn our sons away from the fear of the Lord. We thought therefore it better, 26 and we said: Let us build for ourselves an altar, not for burnt-offerings, nor for victims to be offered, 27 but as a testimony between us and you, and our offspring and your progeny, that we may serve the Lord, and that it be our right to offer both burnt-offerings and sacrifices and peace-offerings; and by no means may your sons tomorrow say to our sons: You have no part in the Lord. 28 But if they should wish to say it, they will answer them: Behold the altar of the Lord, which our fathers made, not for burnt-offerings, nor for sacrifice, but as a testimony for us and for you.

29 Absit a nobis hoc scelus, ut recedamus a Domino, et ejus vestigia relinquamus, exstructo altari ad holocausta, et sacrificia, et victimas offerendas, præter altare Domini Dei nostri, quod exstructum est ante tabernaculum ejus.

29 Far be this crime from us, that we should withdraw from the Lord, and leave his footsteps behind, by constructing an altar for holocausts, and sacrifices, and victims to be offered, besides the altar of the Lord our God, which has been constructed before his tabernacle.

30 Quibus auditis, Phinees sacerdos, et principes legationis Israël, qui erant cum eo, placati sunt: et verba filiorum Ruben, et Gad, et dimidiæ tribus Manasse, libentissime susceperunt. 31 Dixitque Phinees filius Eleazari sacerdos ad eos: Nunc scimus quod nobiscum sit Dominus, quoniam alieni estis a prævaricatione hac, et liberastis filios Israël de manu Domini. 32 Reversusque est cum principibus a filiis Ruben et Gad de terra Galaad, finium Chanaan, ad filios Israël, et retulit eis.

30 When these things were heard, Phinehas the priest, and the princes of the legation of Israel, who were with him, were appeased; and the words of the sons of Reuben, and of Gad, and of the half-tribe of Manasseh, they most gladly received. 31 And Phinehas son of Eleazar, the priest, said to them: Now we know that the Lord is with us, since you are alien to this transgression, and you have delivered the sons of Israel from the hand of the Lord. 32 And he returned with the princes from the sons of Reuben and of Gad out of the land of Gilead, on the borders of Canaan, to the sons of Israel, and reported it to them.

33 Placuitque sermo cunctis audientibus. Et laudaverunt Deum filii Israël, et nequaquam ultra dixerunt, ut ascenderent contra eos, atque pugnarent, et delerent terram possessionis eorum. 34 Vocaveruntque filii Ruben, et filii Gad, altare quod exstruxerant, Testimonium nostrum, quod Dominus ipse sit Deus.

And the word pleased all who were listening. And the sons of Israel praised God,
and they no longer said that they would go up against them, and fight,
and destroy the land of their possession. 34 And the sons of Reuben, and
the sons of Gad, called the altar which they had built, Our Testimony, that the Lord
himself is God.

23 1 Evoluto autem multo tempore, postquam pacem dederat Dominus Israëli, subjectis in gyro nationibus universis, et Josue jam longævo, et persenilis ætatis, 2 vocavit Josue omnem Israëlem, majoresque natu, et principes ac duces, et magistros, dixitque ad eos: Ego senui, et progressioris ætatis sum: 3 vosque cernitis omnia, quæ fecerit Dominus Deus vester cunctis per circuitum nationibus, quomodo pro vobis ipse pugnaverit: 4 et nunc quia vobis sorte divisit omnem terram, ab orientali parte Jordanis usque ad mare magnum, multæque adhuc supersunt nationes: 5 Dominus Deus vester disperdet eas et auferet a facie vestra, et possidebitis terram, sicut vobis pollicitus est. 6 Tantum confortamini, et estote solliciti, ut custodiatis cuncta quæ scripta sunt in volumine legis Moysi: et non declinetis ab eis neque ad dexteram neque ad sinistram: 7 ne postquam intraveritis ad gentes quæ inter vos futuræ sunt, juretis in nomine deorum earum, et serviatis eis, et adoretis illos: 8 sed adhæreatis Domino Deo vestro: quod fecistis usque in diem hanc. 9 Et tunc auferet Dominus Deus in conspectu vestro gentes magnas et robustissimas, et nullus vobis resistere poterit.

23 1 But after much time had elapsed, after the Lord had given peace to Israel, with all the nations round about subjected, and Joshua now long-lived and of a very senile age, 2 Joshua called all Israel, and the elders, and the princes and leaders, and the magistrates, and said to them: I have grown old and am of a more advanced age: 3 and you see all the things which the Lord your God has done to all the nations round about, how he himself has fought for you: 4 and now, since he has allotted to you by lot all the land from the eastern side of the Jordan as far as the Great Sea, and many nations still remain: 5 the Lord your God will destroy them and remove them from before your face, and you shall possess the land, as he has promised you. 6 Only be strengthened, and be solicitous to keep all the things that are written in the volume of the Law of Moses: and do not turn aside from them, neither to the right nor to the left: 7 lest, after you have gone in among the nations which shall be among you, you swear by the name of their gods, and serve them, and adore them: 8 but adhere to the Lord your God, which you have done unto this day. 9 And then the Lord God will take away before your sight great and most robust nations, and no one will be able to resist you.

10 Unus e vobis persequetur hostium mille viros: quia Dominus Deus vester pro vobis ipse pugnabit, sicut pollicitus est. 11 Hoc tantum diligentissime præcavete: ut diligatis Dominum Deum vestrum. 12 Quod si volueritis gentium harum, quæ inter vos habitant, erroribus adhærere, et cum eis miscere connubia, atque amicitias copulare: 13 jam nunc scitote quod Dominus Deus vester non eas deleat ante faciem vestram, sed sint vobis in foveam ac laqueum, et offendiculum ex latere vestro, et sudes in oculis vestris, donec vos auferat atque disperdat de terra hac optima, quam tradidit vobis.

One of you will pursue a thousand of the enemy: because the Lord your God
himself will fight for you, as he has promised. 11 Only this
most diligently beware: that you love the Lord your God. 12 But if
you should wish to adhere to the errors of these nations which dwell among you, and
to mix marriages with them, and to couple friendships: 13 know now
that the Lord your God will not wipe them out from before your face, but they shall be
to you for a pit and a snare, and a stumbling-block from your side, and stakes
in your eyes, until he removes you and disperses you from this excellent land
which he has delivered to you.

14 En ego hodie ingredior viam universæ terræ, et toto animo cognoscetis quod de omnibus verbis, quæ se Dominus præstiturum vobis esse pollicitus est, unum non præterierit incassum. 15 Sicut ergo implevit opere quod promisit, et prospera cuncta venerunt: sic adducet super vos quidquid malorum comminatus est, donec vos auferat atque disperdat de terra hac optima, quam tradidit vobis, 16 eo quod præterieritis pactum Domini Dei vestri, quod pepigit vobiscum, et servieritis diis alienis, et adoraveritis eos: cito atque velociter consurget in vos furor Domini, et auferemini ab hac terra optima, quam tradidit vobis. 24 1 Congregavitque Josue omnes tribus Israël in Sichem, et vocavit majores natu, ac principes, et judices, et magistros: steteruntque in conspectu Domini, 2 et ad populum sic locutus est: Hæc dicit Dominus Deus Israël: Trans fluvium habitaverunt patres vestri ab initio, Thare pater Abraham et Nachor: servieruntque diis alienis.

Behold I today am entering the way of all the earth, and with all your soul you will know that of all the words which the Lord promised that He would perform for you, not one has passed by in vain. 15 Therefore, just as He fulfilled in deed what He promised, and all prosperous things have come, so will He bring upon you whatever evils He has threatened, until He remove and scatter you from this very good land which He has given to you, 16 forasmuch as you have transgressed the covenant of the Lord your God, which He covenanted with you, and have served alien gods and have adored them: quickly and swiftly will the fury of the Lord rise against you, and you will be removed from this very good land, which He has given to you. 24 1 And Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel in Shechem, and called the elders, and the princes, and the judges, and the magistrates: and they stood in the sight of the Lord, 2 and he spoke thus to the people: Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: Beyond the River your fathers dwelt from the beginning, Terah, father of Abraham and of Nahor; and they served alien gods.

I therefore took your father Abraham from the borders of Mesopotamia, and I led him
into the land of Canaan, and I multiplied his seed, 4 and I gave to him Isaac:
and to that one in turn I gave Jacob and Esau. Of whom, to Esau I gave Mount Seir to
possess: but Jacob and his sons went down into Egypt. 5
And I sent Moses and Aaron, and I smote Egypt with many signs and
portents.

6 And I led you and your fathers out of Egypt, and you came to
the sea: and the Egyptians pursued your fathers with chariots and
cavalry, up to the Red Sea. 7 Then the sons of Israel cried
to the Lord: who set darkness between you and the Egyptians, and brought upon them
the sea, and covered them. Your eyes saw all that I did in Egypt,
and you dwelt in the wilderness for a long time: 8 and I brought you
into the land of the Amorite, who dwelt across the Jordan.

Cumque pugnarent contra vos, tradidi eos in manus vestras, et possedistis terram eorum, atque interfecistis eos. 9 Surrexit autem Balac filius Sephor rex Moab, et pugnavit contra Israëlem. Misitque et vocavit Balaam filium Beor, ut malediceret vobis: 10 et ego nolui audire eum, sed e contrario per illum benedixi vobis, et liberavi vos de manu ejus.

And when they fought
against you, I delivered them into your hands, and you possessed their land,
and you slew them. 9 And Balak son of Sephor, king of Moab,
arose and fought against Israel. And he sent and called Balaam son of Beor, to
curse you: 10 and I was unwilling to listen to him, but on the contrary through
him I blessed you, and I delivered you from his hand.

11 Transistisque Jordanem, et venistis ad Jericho. Pugnaveruntque contra vos viri civitatis ejus, Amorrhæus et Pherezæus, et Chananæus, et Hethæus, et Gergezæus, et Hevæus, et Jebusæus: et tradidi illos in manus vestras. 12 Misique ante vos crabrones: et ejeci eos de locis suis, duos reges Amorrhæorum, non in gladio nec in arcu tuo.

11 And you crossed
the Jordan, and you came to Jericho. And the men fought against you—
of that city, the Amorrite and the Perizzite, and the Canaanite, and the Hittite, and
the Girgashite, and the Hivite, and the Jebusite: and I delivered them into your hands. 12 And I sent before you the hornets: and I drove them out from their places, the two kings
of the Amorrites, not by your sword nor by your bow.

13 Dedique vobis terram, in qua non laborastis, et urbes quas non ædificastis, ut habitaretis in eis : vineas, et oliveta, quæ non plantastis. 14 Nunc ergo timete Dominum, et servite ei perfecto corde atque verissimo: et auferte deos quibus servierunt patres vestri in Mesopotamia et in Ægypto, ac servite Domino. 15 Sin autem malum vobis videtur ut Domino serviatis, optio vobis datur : eligite hodie quod placet, cui servire potissimum debeatis: utrum diis, quibus servierunt patres vestri in Mesopotamia, an diis Amorrhæorum, in quorum terra habitatis: ego autem et domus mea serviemus Domino.

13 And I gave to you the land, in which you did not labor, and cities which you did not build, that you might dwell in them : vineyards, and olive groves, which you did not plant. 14 Now therefore fear the Lord, and serve him with a perfect and most true heart: and remove the gods whom your fathers served in Mesopotamia and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. 15 But if it seems evil to you to serve the Lord, a choice is given to you : choose today what pleases, whom you ought chiefly to serve: whether the gods whom your fathers served in Mesopotamia, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.

16 Responditque populus, et ait: Absit a nobis ut relinquamus Dominum, et serviamus diis alienis. 17 Dominus Deus noster, ipse eduxit nos et patres nostros de terra Ægypti, de domo servitutis: fecitque videntibus nobis signa ingentia, et custodivit nos in omni via per quam ambulavimus, et in cunctis populis per quos transivimus. 18 Et ejecit universas gentes, Amorrhæum habitatorem terræ quam nos intravimus.

16 And the people answered, and said: Far be it from us that we should leave the Lord, and serve alien gods. 17 The Lord our God, he himself led us out, and our fathers, from the land of Egypt, from the house of servitude; and he made before our eyes mighty signs, and he kept us in every way wherein we walked, and among all the peoples through whom we passed. 18 And he drove out all the nations, the Amorite, inhabitant of the land which we entered.

Serviemus igitur Domino, quia ipse est Deus noster. 19 Dixitque Josue ad populum: Non poteritis servire Domino: Deus enim sanctus et fortis æmulator est, nec ignoscet sceleribus vestris atque peccatis. 20 Si dimiseritis Dominum, et servieritis diis alienis, convertet se, et affliget vos atque subvertet, postquam vobis præstiterit bona.

We will therefore serve the Lord, for he himself is our God. 19 And Joshua said to the people: You will not be able to serve the Lord; for God is holy and mighty, a jealous (emulous) God, and he will not forgive your crimes and your sins. 20 If you forsake the Lord and serve alien gods, he will turn, and will afflict you and overthrow you, after he has bestowed good things upon you.

21 Dixitque populus ad Josue: Nequaquam ita ut loqueris erit, sed Domino serviemus. 22 Et Josue ad populum: Testes, inquit, vos estis, quia ipsi elegeritis vobis Dominum ut serviatis ei. Responderuntque: Testes. 23 Nunc ergo, ait, auferte deos alienos de medio vestri, et inclinate corda vestra ad Dominum Deum Israël. 24 Dixitque populus ad Josue: Domino Deo nostro serviemus, et obedientes erimus præceptis ejus.

21 And the people said to Joshua: By no means shall it be as you speak, but we will serve the Lord. 22 And Joshua said to the people: You are witnesses, he said, that you yourselves have chosen the Lord for yourselves, to serve him. And they answered: Witnesses. 23 Now therefore, he said, remove the alien gods from your midst, and incline your hearts to the Lord God of Israel. 24 And the people said to Joshua: We will serve the Lord our God, and we will be obedient to his precepts.

25 Percussit ergo Josue in die illo fœdus, et proposuit populo præcepta atque judicia in Sichem. 26 Scripsit quoque omnia verba hæc in volumine legis Domini: et tulit lapidem pergrandem, posuitque eum subter quercum, quæ erat in sanctuario Domini: 27 et dixit ad omnem populum: En lapis iste erit vobis in testimonium, quod audierit omnia verba Domini, quæ locutus est vobis: ne forte postea negare velitis, et mentiri Domino Deo vestro. 28 Dimisitque populum, singulos in possessionem suam.

25 Therefore Joshua struck a covenant on that day, and set before the people precepts and judgments in Shechem. 26 He also wrote all these words in the volume of the Law of the Lord; and he took a very great stone, and placed it beneath the oak which was in the sanctuary of the Lord. 27 And he said to all the people: Behold, this stone shall be for you as a testimony, that it has heard all the words of the Lord which he has spoken to you, lest perhaps afterward you should wish to deny, and to lie to the Lord your God. 28 And he dismissed the people, each to his possession.

29 Et post hæc mortuus est Josue filius Nun servus Domini, centum et decem annorum: 30 sepelieruntque eum in finibus possessionis suæ in Thamnathsare, quæ est sita in monte Ephraim, a septentrionali parte montis Gaas. 31 Servivitque Israël Domino cunctis diebus Josue et seniorum, qui longo vixerunt tempore post Josue, et qui noverunt omnia opera Domini quæ fecerat in Israël.

29 And after these things Joshua son of Nun, servant of the Lord, died, one hundred and ten years old: 30 and they buried him within the borders of his possession in Timnath-serah, which is situated in the hill-country of Ephraim, on the northern side of Mount Gaash. 31 And Israel served the Lord all the days of Joshua and of the elders, who lived long after Joshua, and who knew all the works of the Lord which he had done in Israel.

32 Ossa quoque Joseph, quæ tulerant filii Israël de Ægypto, sepelierunt in Sichem, in parte agri quem emerat Jacob a filiis Hemor patris Sichem, centum novellis ovibus, et fuit in possessionem filiorum Joseph. 33 Eleazar quoque filius Aaron mortuus est: et sepelierunt eum in Gabaath Phinees filii ejus, quæ data est ei in monte Ephraim.

32 The bones also of Joseph, which the sons of Israel had brought up from Egypt, they buried
in Shechem, in the portion of the field which Jacob had bought from the sons of Hamor, father of Shechem,
for a hundred lambs, and it became the possession of the sons of Joseph. 33
And Eleazar, the son of Aaron, also died; and they buried him in Gibeah
of Phinehas, his son, which had been given to him in Mount Ephraim.
