13 But Canaan begot Sidon his firstborn, and the Hittite as well, 14 and the Jebusite, and the Amorite, and the Girgashite, 15 and the Hivite and the Arkite, and the Sinite. 16 and the Arvadite as well, and the Zemarite, and the Hamathite. 17 The sons of Shem: Elam, and Asshur, and Arphaxad, and Lud, and Aram, and Uz, and Hul, and Gether, and Mash. 18 But Arphaxad begot Shelah, who also himself begot Eber. 19 Moreover to Eber two sons were born: the name of the one, Peleg, because in his days the earth was divided; and the name of his brother, Joktan.
20 But Jectan begot Elmodad, and Saleph, and Asarmoth, and Jare, 21 likewise Adoram, and Huzal, and Decla, 22 also Hebal, and Abimael, and Saba, and moreover 23 Ophir, and Hevila, and Jobab: all these are the sons of Jectan. 24 Sem, Arphaxad, Sale, 25 Heber, Phaleg, Ragau, 26 Serug, Nachor, Thare, 27 Abram: this is Abraham.
33 But the sons of Midian: Ephah, and Epher, and Hanoch, and Abida, and Eldaah: all these are the sons of Keturah. 34 But Abraham begot Isaac: whose sons were Esau, and Israel. 35 The sons of Esau: Eliphaz, Reuel, Jeush, Jaalam, and Korah. 36 The sons of Eliphaz: Teman, Omar, Zephi, Gatam, Kenaz, Timna, Amalek. 37 The sons of Reuel: Nahath, Zerah, Shammah, Mizzah.
43 These are the kings who ruled in the land of Edom, before there was a king over the sons of Israel. Bale son of Beor; and the name of his city, Denaba. 44 But Bale died, and Jobab son of Zare of Bosra reigned in his place. 45 And when Jobab also had died, Husam of the land of the Temanites reigned in his place.
46 Husam also died, and Adad son of Badad reigned in his stead, who smote Midian in the land of Moab: and the name of his city was Avith. 47 And when Adad also had died, Semla of Masreca reigned in his stead. 48 But Semla also died, and Saul of Rehoboth, which is situated near the river, reigned in his stead.
2 1 Now the sons of Israel: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun, 2 Dan, Joseph, Benjamin, Naphtali, Gad, and Asher. 3 The sons of Judah: Er, Onan, and Shelah: these three were born to him from the daughter of Shua, a Canaanite woman. Now Er, the firstborn of Judah, was evil before the Lord, and the Lord put him to death.
52 Moreover, the sons of Sobal, father of Cariathiarim: who saw half of the restings. 53 And from the kin of Cariathiarim: the Jethrite, and the Aphuthite, and the Shemathite, and the Masarite. From these came forth the Saraites and the Esthaolites. 54 The sons of Salma: Bethlehem, and the Netophathites, the crown of the house of Joab, and half of the resting-place of Sarai: 55 also the clans of the scribes dwelling in Jabes, singing and resounding, and abiding in tents.
3 1 But David had these sons, who were born to him in Hebron: the firstborn Amnon from Ahinoam the Jezreelite, the second Daniel from Abigail the Carmelite, 2 the third Absalom, son of Maacah, daughter of Talmai, king of Geshur, the fourth Adonijah, son of Haggith, 3 the fifth Shephatiah from Abital, the sixth Ithream from Eglah his wife. 4 Thus six were born to him in Hebron, where he reigned seven years and six months. And for thirty-three years he reigned in Jerusalem.
5 Moreover in Jerusalem sons were born to him, Simmaa, and Sobab, and Nathan, and Salomon, four from Bethsabee the daughter of Ammiel: 6 Jebaar also and Elisama, 7 and Eliphaleth, and Noge, and Nepheg, and Japhia, 8 likewise Elisama, and Eliada, and Elipheleth, nine: 9 all these, sons of David apart from the sons of the concubines: and they had a sister, Thamar. 10 Now the son of Salomon, Roboam: whose son Abia begot Asa. Of this one there was also born Josaphat, 11 the father Joram: and Joram begot Ochozias, from whom Joas arose: 12 and his son Amasias begot Azariam.
Moreover, Jotham, son of Azariah, 13 begot Ahaz, father of Hezekiah, from whom was born Manasseh. 14 And Manasseh also begot Amon, father of Josiah. 15 But the sons of Josiah were: the firstborn Johanan, the second Jehoiakim, the third Zedekiah, the fourth Shallum. 16 From Jehoiakim was born Jeconiah, and Zedekiah.
17 The sons of Jeconiah were: Assir, Salathiel, 18 Melchiram, Pedaiah, Senneser, and Jekamiah, Sama, and Nadabiah. 19 From Pedaiah were born Zerubbabel and Shimei. Zerubbabel begot Meshullam, Hananiah, and Shelomith, their sister: 20 Hashubah also, and Ohel, and Berechiah, and Hasadiah, Jushab-hesed, five.
21 The son moreover of Hanania, Phaltias, father of Jeseia, whose son was Raphaia: his son also, Arnan, from whom was born Obdia, whose son was Sechenias. 22 The son of Sechenia, Semeia: whose sons were Hattus, and Jegaal, and Baria, and Naaria, and Saphat, six in number. 23 The sons of Naariæ, Elioënai, and Ezechias, and Ezricam, three.
9 But Jabez was renowned beyond his brothers, and his mother called his name Jabez, saying: Because I bore him in pain. 10 And Jabez invoked the God of Israel, saying: If indeed you bless me, and enlarge my boundaries, and your hand be with me, and you make me not to be oppressed by evil. And God granted what he had prayed for.
The sons also of Ela: Cenez. 16 The sons also of Jaleleel: Ziph, and Zipha, Thiria, and Asraël. 17 And the sons of Ezra, Jether, and Mered, and Epher, and Jalon, and she bore Miriam, and Shammai, and Jesba the father of Esthamo. 18 His wife also, Judaia, bore Jared the father of Gedor, and Heber the father of Socho, and Icuthiel the father of Zanoë: these moreover are the sons of Bethia, the daughter of Pharaoh, whom Mered took.
21 The sons of Shelah, son of Judah: Her the father of Lecha, and Laada the father of Maresa, and the kindreds of the house of those working byssus in the house of the oath. 22 And the one who made the sun stand, and the men of Falsehood, and Secure, and Burning, who were princes in Moab, and those who returned to Lahem: now these words are ancient. 23 These are the potters dwelling in plantations and in hedges, with the king in his works: and they stayed there.
27 The sons of Semei were sixteen, and the daughters six: but his brothers did not have many sons, and the whole cognation could not equal the sum of the sons of Judah. 28 Moreover, they dwelt in Bersabee, and Molada, and Hasarsuhal, 29 and in Bala, and in Asom, and in Tholad, 30 and in Bathuel, and in Horma, and in Siceleg, 31 and in Bethmarchaboth, and in Hasarsusim, and in Bethberai, and in Saarim: these were their cities up to King David. 32 Their villages also: Etam, and Aën, Remmon, and Thochen, and Asan, five cities.
33 And all their hamlets in the circuit around these cities as far as Baal: this is their habitation, and the distribution of their seats. 34 Also Mosobab and Jemlech, and Josa son of Amasiah, 35 and Joël, and Jehu son of Josabiah son of Seraiah son of Asiel, 36 and Elioënai, and Jacoba, and Isuhaia, and Asaia, and Adiel, and Ismiel, and Banaia, 37 Ziza also, son of Sephei, son of Allon, son of Idaia, son of Semri, son of Samaia. 38 These are the named princes in their cognations, and in the house of their affinities they were multiplied exceedingly.
39 And they set out to enter into Gedor, as far as the east of the valley, and to seek pastures for their flocks. 40 And they found pastures rich and very good, and a very broad land and quiet and fertile, in which beforehand there had dwelt men of the stock of Ham. 41 These therefore came, whom we have described above by name, in the days of Hezekiah king of Judah: and they smote their tents, and the inhabitants who had been found there, and wiped them out even to the present day: and they dwelt in their stead, because they found there most abundant pastures.
42 Also, from the sons of Simeon there went away into Mount Seir five hundred men, having as princes Phalthiah and Naariah and Rephaiah and Uzziel, the sons of Jesi: 43 and they struck down the remnant of the Amalekites who had been able to escape, and they dwelt there in their place until this day.
4 Filii Joël: Samia filius ejus, Gog filius ejus, Semei filius ejus, 5 Micha filius ejus, Reia filius ejus, Baal filius ejus, 6 Beera filius ejus, quem captivum duxit Thelgathphalnasar rex Assyriorum, et fuit princeps in tribu Ruben.
5 1 The sons also of Reuben, the firstborn of Israel. (For he indeed was his firstborn; but when he had violated his father’s bed, his birthrights were given to the sons of Joseph, the son of Israel, and he was not reckoned as the firstborn. 2 Moreover Judah, who was the strongest among his brothers—of his stock princes were engendered: but the firstborn rights were reckoned to Joseph.) 3 Therefore the sons of Reuben, the firstborn of Israel: Enoch, and Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi. 4 The sons of Joel: Shemaiah his son, Gog his son, Shimei his son, 5 Micah his son, Reaiah his son, Baal his son, 6 Beerah his son, whom Tiglath-pileser, king of the Assyrians, led away captive; and he was a prince in the tribe of Reuben.
7 But his brothers, and his whole kin, when they were being numbered by their families, had as chiefs Jehiel and Zechariah. 8 Moreover Bala, son of Azaz, son of Samma, son of Joel—he himself dwelt in Aroer as far as Nebo and Baal-meon. 9 And toward the eastern quarter he dwelt as far as the entrance of the wilderness and the river Euphrates.
11 Filii vero Gad e regione eorum habitaverunt in terra Basan usque Selcha: 12 Joël in capite, et Saphan secundus: Janai autem et Saphat in Basan. 13 Fratres vero eorum secundum domos cognationum suarum, Michaël, et Mosollam, et Sebe, et Jorai, et Jachan, et Zie, et Heber, septem. 14 Hi filii Abihail, filii Huri, filii Jara, filii Galaad, filii Michaël, filii Jesesi, filii Jeddo, filii Buz.
11 But the sons of Gad, in their region, dwelt in the land of Bashan up to Selcha: 12 Joel at the head, and Saphan second: but Janai and Saphat in Bashan. 13 And their brothers according to the houses of their kindreds, Michael, and Mosollam, and Sebe, and Jorai, and Jachan, and Zie, and Heber, seven. 14 These are the sons of Abihail, the son of Huri, the son of Jara, the son of Gilead, the son of Michael, the son of Jesesi, the son of Jeddo, the son of Buz.
15 And their brothers also, the sons of Abdiel, son of Guni, the prince of the house in their families. 16 And they dwelt in Gilead, and in Bashan, and in its hamlets, and in all the suburbs of Sharon, as far as the boundaries. 17 All these were numbered in the days of Jotham king of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam king of Israel. 18 The sons of Reuben, and of Gad, and of the half-tribe of Manasseh, men of war, bearing shields and swords, and bending the bow, and trained for battles, 44,760, going out to fight.
19 They fought against the Hagrites; but the Ituraeans, and Naphish, and Nodab 20 provided them assistance. And the Hagrites were delivered into their hands, and all who had been with them, because they invoked God when they were waging war; and he hearkened to them, in that they had believed in him. 21 And they seized all that they possessed: fifty thousand camels, and two hundred fifty thousand sheep, and two thousand donkeys, and one hundred thousand souls of men.
23 The sons also of the half-tribe of Manasseh possessed the land from the borders of Bashan as far as Baal, Hermon, and Sanir, and Mount Hermon: for indeed they were an enormous number. 24 And these were the princes of the house of their kindred: Epher, and Jesi, and Eliel, and Ezriel, and Jeremiah, and Odoia, and Jediel, very valiant and mighty men, and named leaders in their families. 25 But they left the God of their fathers, and fornicated after the gods of the peoples of the land, whom God removed from before them.
6 Uzzi begot Zerahiah, and Zerahiah begot Meraioth. 7 Moreover Meraioth begot Amariah, and Amariah begot Ahitub. 8 Ahitub begot Zadok, and Zadok begot Ahimaaz, 9 Ahimaaz begot Azariah, Azariah begot Johanan, 10 Johanan begot Azariah: he is the one who held the priesthood in the house which Solomon built in Jerusalem.
11 Moreover Azarias begot Amarias, and Amarias begot Achitob, 12 Achitob begot Sadoc, and Sadoc begot Sellum, 13 Sellum begot Helciam, and Helcias begot Azarias, 14 Azarias begot Saraiam, and Saraias begot Josedec. 15 Moreover Josedec went out, when the Lord carried away Judah and Jerusalem by the hand of Nabuchodonosor. 16 Therefore the sons of Levi: Gersom, Caath, and Merari.
Now these are the clans of Levi according to their families. 20 Gersom: Lobni his son, Jahath his son, Zamma his son, 21 Joah his son, Addo his son, Zara his son, Jethrai his son. 22 The sons of Caath: Aminadab his son, Core his son, Asir his son, 23 Elcana his son, Abiasaph his son, Asir his son, 24 Thahath his son, Uriel his son, Ozias his son, Saul his son.

54 And these are their habitations through the villages and confines, namely of the sons of Aaron, according to the kinships of the Kohathites: for to them by lot they had fallen. 55 They therefore gave them Hebron in the land of Judah, and its suburbs round about: 56 but the fields of the city, and the villages, to Caleb son of Jephunneh. 57 Moreover to the sons of Aaron they gave cities for refuge: Hebron, and Libnah, and its suburbs, 58 also Jether, and Eshtemoa with their suburbs, and also Helon, and Debir with their suburbs, 59 also Ashan, and Beth-shemesh, and their suburbs.
60 But from the tribe of Benjamin, Gabee and its suburbs, and Almath with its suburbs, and Anathoth also with its suburbs: all the cities, thirteen, according to their clans. 61 But to the remaining sons of Caath of their clan they gave, from the half-tribe of Manasse, as a possession, ten cities. 62 Moreover, to the sons of Gersom according to their clans, from the tribe of Issachar, and from the tribe of Aser, and from the tribe of Nephthali, and from the tribe of Manasse in Basan, thirteen cities.
63 But to the sons of Merari, according to their clans, from the tribe of Reuben, and from the tribe of Gad, and from the tribe of Zebulun, they gave by lot twelve cities. 64 The sons of Israel also gave to the Levites cities, and their suburbs: 65 and they gave by lot, from the tribe of the sons of Judah, and from the tribe of the sons of Simeon, and from the tribe of the sons of Benjamin, these cities, which they called by their own names, 66 and to those who were of the kindred of the sons of Kohath, the cities were within their borders from the tribe of Ephraim. 67 They therefore gave to them cities for refuge: Shechem with its suburbs in the hill-country of Ephraim, and Gezer with its suburbs, 68 Jokmeam also with its suburbs, and Beth-horon likewise, 69 and also Elon with its suburbs, and Gath-rimmon in the same manner.

14 Porro filius Manasse, Esriel: concubinaque ejus Syra peperit Machir patrem Galaad.
14 Moreover the son of Manasseh, Esriel: and his concubine, a Syrian, bore Machir, the father of Galaad. 15 But Machir took wives for his sons Happhim and Saphan: and he had a sister named Maacha: and the name of the second, Salphaad, and to Salphaad daughters were born. 16 And Maacha, the wife of Machir, bore a son, and she called his name Phares: moreover the name of his brother, Sares: and his sons, Ulam and Recen. 17 But the son of Ulam, Badan: these are the sons of Galaad, son of Machir, son of Manasseh.

20 But the sons of Ephraim: Suthala, his son Bared, his son Thahath, his son Elada, his son Thahath, his son Zabad, 21 and his son Suthula, and his son Ezer and Elad: now the men of Geth, natives of the place, killed them, because they had come down to seize their possessions. 22 Therefore Ephraim their father mourned many days, and his brothers came to console him. 23 And he went in to his wife, who conceived and bore a son, and he called his name Beria, because in the misfortunes of his house he had arisen: 24 moreover his daughter was Sara, who built Lower and Upper Bethoron, and Ozensara.
25 Moreover his son was Rephah, and Resheph, and Telah, from whom Tahan was born, 26 who begot Laadan; his son also was Ammihud, who begot Elishama, 27 from whom Nun arose, who had Joshua as his son. 28 Now their possession and habitation: Bethel with its daughters, and toward the east Naaran, on the western side Gezer and her daughters, also Shechem with its daughters, as far as Gaza with its daughters. 29 Next to the sons of Manasseh: Beth-shean and its daughters, Taanach and its daughters, Megiddo and its daughters, Dor and its daughters: in these dwelt the sons of Joseph, the sons of Israel.
8 1 But Benjamin begot Bale his firstborn, Asbel the second, Ahara the third, 2 Nohaa the fourth, and Rapha the fifth. 3 And the sons of Bale were: Addar, and Gera, and Abiud, 4 Abisue also, and Naaman, and Ahoë, 5 and likewise Gera, and Sephuphan, and Huram. 6 These are the sons of Ahod, chiefs of kindreds dwelling in Gabaa, who were transferred to Manahath.
7 But Naaman, and Achia, and Gera—he himself transported them—and he begot Osa and Ahiud. 8 Moreover Saharaim begot in the region of Moab, after he had dismissed Husim and Bara, his wives. 9 And he begot from Hodes his wife Jobab, and Sebia, and Mosa, and Molchom, 10 Jehus also, and Sechia, and Marma: these are his sons, princes in their families.
14 And Ahio, and Sesac, and Jerimoth, 15 and Zabadia, and Arod, and Heder, 16 Michaël also, and Jespha, and Joha sons of Baria. 17 And Zabadia, and Mosollam, and Hezeci, and Heber, 18 and Jesamari, and Jezlia, and Jobab sons of Elphaal, 19 and Jacim, and Zechri, and Zabdi, 20 and Elioënai, and Selethai, and Eliel, 21 and Adaia, and Baraia, and Samarath, sons of Semei. 22 And Jespham, and Heber, and Eliel, 23 and Abdon, and Zechri, and Hanan, 24 and Hanania, and Ælam, and Anathothia, 25 and Jephdaia, and Phanuel, sons of Sesac.
26 And Samsari, and Sohoria, and Otholia, 27 and Jersia, and Elia, and Zechri, the sons of Jeroham. 28 These patriarchs, and chiefs of the kindreds, who dwelt in Jerusalem. 29 Moreover in Gabaon there dwelt Abigabaon, and the name of his wife was Maacha: 30 and his firstborn son was Abdon, and Sur, and Cis, and Baal, and Nadab, 31 and Gedor also, and Ahio, and Zacher, and Macelloth: 32 and Macelloth begot Samaa: and they dwelt over against their brothers in Jerusalem with their brothers.
35 The sons of Micha, Phithon, and Melech, and Tharaa, and Ahaz. 36 And Ahaz begot Joada, and Joada begot Alamath, and Azmoth, and Zamri: moreover Zamri begot Mosa, 37 and Mosa begot Banaa, whose son was Rapha, from whom arose Elasa, who begot Asel. 38 Moreover Asel had six sons by these names: Ezricam, Bocru, Ismahel, Saria, Obdia, and Hanan: all these were sons of Asel.
9 1 Therefore the whole of Israel was numbered, and the sum of them was written in the book of the kings of Israel and Judah: and they were carried away to Babylon because of their transgression. 2 But those who first dwelt in their possessions and in their cities: Israel, and the priests, and the Levites, and the Nethinim. 3 There dwelt in Jerusalem of the sons of Judah, and of the sons of Benjamin, and also of the sons of Ephraim and Manasseh. 4 Othei son of Ammiud, son of Amri, son of Omrai, son of Bonni, of the sons of Phares, son of Judah.
5 And from the Shilonites: Asaia the firstborn, and his sons. 6 But from the sons of Zara: Jehuel, and their brothers, 690. 7 Moreover from the sons of Benjamin: Salo son of Mosollam, son of Oduia, son of Asana, 8 and Jobania son of Jeroham, and Ela son of Ozi, son of Mochori, and Mosollam son of Saphatia, son of Rahuel, son of Jebania, 9 and their brothers according to their families, 956.
10 De sacerdotibus autem: Jedaia, Jojarib, et Jachin: 11 Azarias quoque filius Helciæ, filii Mosollam, filii Sadoc, filii Maraioth, filii Achitob, pontifex domus Dei. 12 Porro Adaias filius Jeroham, filii Phassur, filii Melchiæ, et Maasai filius Adiel filii Jezra, filii Mosollam, filii Mosollamith, filii Emmer. 13 Fratres quoque eorum principes per familias suas, mille septingenti sexaginta, fortissimi robore ad faciendum opus ministerii in domo Dei.
10 But of the priests: Jedaiah, Jehoiarib, and Jachin: 11 and Azariah, son of Hilkiah, son of Meshullam, son of Zadok, son of Meraioth, son of Ahitub, pontiff of the house of God. 12 Moreover Adaiah, son of Jeroham, son of Pashhur, son of Malchijah, and Maasai, son of Adiel, son of Jahzerah, son of Meshullam, son of Meshillemith, son of Immer. 13 Their brothers also, heads according to their families, 1,760, most mighty in strength for doing the work of the ministry in the house of God.
14 But of the Levites: Semeia son of Hassub, son of Ezricam, son of Hasebia, of the sons of Merari. 15 Bacbacar also, a carpenter, and Galal, and Mathania son of Micha, son of Zechri, son of Asaph: 16 and Obdia son of Semeiæ, son of Galal, son of Idithun: and Barachia son of Asa, son of Elcana, who dwelt in the courts of Netophati. 17 But the janitors: Sellum, and Accub, and Telmon, and Ahimam: and their brother Sellum was chief, 18 up to that time; at the king’s gate to the east, they kept watch by their turns, of the sons of Levi.
19 But Sellum, the son of Core, the son of Abiasaph, the son of Core, with his brothers and the house of his father—these are the Korahites set over the works of the ministry, keepers of the vestibules of the tabernacle: and their families, by turns, of the camps of the Lord, guarding the entrance. 20 Moreover Phinees, the son of Eleazar, was their leader before the Lord. 21 And Zacharias, the son of Mosollamia, was doorkeeper of the gate of the tabernacle of the testimony.
22 All these, chosen for the doorkeepers by the gates, were two hundred and twelve; and enrolled in their own villages, whom David and Samuel the seer appointed, in their faithfulness, 23 both them and their sons, at the entrances of the house of the Lord and at the tabernacle, in their turns. 24 By the four winds were the doorkeepers: that is, at the east, and at the west, and at the north, and at the south. 25 But their brothers dwelt in the hamlets, and they came on their sabbaths from time to time.
26 To these four Levites the whole number of the doorkeepers was entrusted, and they were over the exedrae and the treasuries of the house of the Lord. 27 Around the circuit of the temple of the Lord also they used to dwell in their guard-posts: so that, when the time had come, they themselves in the morning would open the doors.
28 Of their lineage were also those over the vessels of the ministry: for by number both the vessels were brought in and were carried out. 29 Of these also were those who had the utensils of the sanctuary entrusted, who were set over the fine flour, and the wine, and the oil, and the incense, and the aromatics. 30 But the sons of the priests compounded unguents from the aromatics.
31 And Mattathias, a Levite, firstborn of Shallum the Korahite, was prefect over the things that were fried in the frying-pan. 32 Moreover, of the sons of Kohath, their brothers, they were over the breads of the proposition, that they might always prepare new ones for each sabbath. 33 These are the chiefs of the singers by the families of the Levites, who dwelt in the exedrae, that by day and by night continually they might devote themselves to their ministry.
34 The heads of the Levites, chiefs according to their families, remained in Jerusalem. 35 In Gabaon, however, there resided the father of Gabaon, Jehiel, and the name of his wife was Maacha. 36 His firstborn son was Abdon, and Sur, and Cis, and Baal, and Ner, and Nadab, 37 Gedor also, and Ahio, and Zacharias, and Macelloth.
44 Moreover Azel had six sons, by these names: Ezrikam, Bocheru, Ishmael, Seraiah, Obadiah, Hanan: these are the sons of Azel. 10 1 Now the Philistines were fighting against Israel, and the men of Israel fled before the Philistines, and fell wounded on Mount Gilboa. 2 And when the Philistines drew near, pursuing Saul and his sons, they struck down Jonathan, and Abinadab, and Melchishua, the sons of Saul. 3 And the battle was heavy against Saul, and the archers found him, and wounded him with javelins.
4 And Saul said to his armiger: Unsheathe your sword, and kill me, lest perhaps these uncircumcised come and mock me. But his armiger was unwilling to do this, terrified with fear: therefore Saul seized the sword and hurled himself upon it. 5 And when his armiger saw, namely, that Saul was dead, he too rushed upon his own sword, and died.
6 Therefore Saul perished: and his three sons, and all his house fell together. 7 When the men of Israel who dwelt in the plains saw this, they fled: and with Saul and his sons dead, they abandoned their cities, and were scattered hither and thither: and the Philistines came and lived in them. 8 So on the next day, as the Philistines were stripping the spoils of the slain, they found Saul and his sons lying on Mount Gilboa. 9 And when they had despoiled him, and had cut off his head, and had stripped him of his arms, they sent into their land, so that it might be carried around and shown to the temples of their idols, and to the peoples: 10 moreover they consecrated his arms in the fane of their god, and fastened the head in the temple of Dagon.
11 When the men of Jabesh-Gilead heard this—namely all that the Philistines had done concerning Saul—12 each of the valiant men arose and took up the corpses of Saul and his sons; and they brought them to Jabesh, and buried their bones beneath the oak that was in Jabesh, and they fasted for seven days. 13 Therefore Saul died on account of his iniquities, in that he had transgressed the commandment of the Lord which He had commanded, and had not kept it; but moreover he had even consulted a pythoness, 14 and had not hoped in the Lord: wherefore He slew him, and transferred his kingdom to David the son of Jesse.
11 1 Therefore all Israel was gathered to David at Hebron, saying: We are your bone and your flesh. 2 Yesterday also and the day before yesterday, while Saul was still reigning, it was you who were leading Israel out and bringing them in: for to you the Lord your God said: You shall pasture my people Israel, and you shall be prince over them. 3 Therefore all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and David entered with them into a covenant before the Lord: and they anointed him king over Israel, according to the word of the Lord which he spoke by the hand of Samuel.
4 David also went, and all Israel, to Jerusalem: this is Jebus, where the Jebusites were the inhabitants of the land. 5 And those who were dwelling in Jebus said to David: You shall not enter here. But David seized the citadel of Zion, which is the City of David, 6 and he said: Everyone who shall strike the Jebusite first shall be chief and leader. Therefore Joab son of Zeruiah went up first, and was made chief.
10 These are the princes of the mighty men of David, who helped him that he might become king over all Israel, according to the word of the Lord which he spoke to Israel. 11 And this is the number of the robust men of David: Jesbaam son of Hachamoni, chief among the thirty: he raised his spear against three hundred, struck down at one time. 12 And after him Eleazar, the son of his paternal uncle, an Ahohite, who was among the three mighty. 13 This one was with David at Phesdomim, when the Philistines were gathered to that place for battle: and the field of that region was full of barley, and the people had fled from before the face of the Philistines.
14 These stood in the middle of the field, and defended it: and when they had smitten the Philistines, the Lord gave a great salvation to his people. 15 Moreover, three of the thirty chiefs went down to the rock where David was, to the cave of Adullam, when the Philistines had encamped in the valley of Rephaim. 16 But David was in the stronghold, and the station of the Philistines was in Bethlehem.
17 Therefore David desired, and said: O that someone would give me water from the cistern of Bethlehem, which is at the gate ! 18 Therefore these three went through the midst of the camp of the Philistines, and drew water from the cistern of Bethlehem which was at the gate, and brought it to David to drink. He would not, but rather poured it out as a libation to the Lord, 19 saying: Far be it from me, in the sight of my God, to do this, and to drink the blood of these men: for at the peril of their lives they brought water to me. And for this cause he was unwilling to drink: these things the three most valiant did.
Abishai also, the brother of Joab, he himself was chief of the three, and he himself lifted up his spear against three hundred and struck them down, and he himself was the most well-named among the three, and among the second three illustrious, and their chief: nevertheless he had not attained up to the first three. Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada, a most robust man, who had performed many works, from Kabzeel: he himself struck down the two Ariels of Moab, and he himself went down and killed a lion in the middle of a cistern in the time of snow. And he himself struck down an Egyptian man, whose stature was five cubits, and he had a spear like the weavers’ beam: he therefore went down to him with a rod, and snatched the spear which he was holding in his hand, and killed him with his own spear.

12 1 These also came to David in Ziklag, while he was still fleeing Saul the son of Kish: they were most mighty and distinguished combatants, 2 drawing the bow, and with either hand hurling stones with slings, and directing arrows, of the brethren of Saul from Benjamin. 3 The chief Ahiecer, and Joas the sons of Samaa, Gabaathites; and Jaziel and Phallet the sons of Azmoth; and Baracha, and Jehu, Anathothites. 4 Also Samaias the Gabaonite, the most mighty among the thirty, and over the thirty.
8 But also from Gad there deserted to David, while he was hiding in the desert, men most robust and the best fighters, holding shield and spear: their faces were as the faces of a lion, and swift as roe-deer on the mountains: 9 Ezer chief, Obdias second, Eliab third, 10 Masmana fourth, Jeremias fifth, 11 Ethi sixth, Eliel seventh, 12 Johanan eighth, Elzebad ninth, 13 Jeremias tenth, Machbanai eleventh. 14 These, of the sons of Gad, were chiefs of the army: the least was over a hundred soldiers, and the greatest over a thousand. 15 These are they who crossed the Jordan in the first month, when it is accustomed to overflow upon its banks: and they put to flight all who were dwelling in the valleys toward the eastern quarter and the western.
16 But there also came from Benjamin and from Judah to the garrison in which David was dwelling. 17 And David went out to meet them, and said: If you have come peacefully to me to help me, let my heart be joined to you; but if you are laying ambush against me for my adversaries, when I have no iniquity in my hands, may the God of our fathers see and judge. 18 But the Spirit clothed Amasai, chief among the Thirty, and he said: We are yours, O David, and with you, son of Jesse.
19 Now from Manasseh there defected to David, when he was coming with the Philistines against Saul to fight: and he did not do battle with them, because, counsel having been taken, the princes of the Philistines sent him back, saying: He will return to his lord Saul at the peril of our heads. 20 When therefore he had returned to Ziklag, there defected to him from Manasseh, Ednas, and Jozabad, and Jedihel, and Michael, and Ednas, and Jozabad, and Eliu, and Salathi, princes of thousands in Manasseh. 21 These furnished help to David against the raiders: for all were very mighty men, and they became princes in the army.
23 This also is the number of the princes of the army who came to David when he was in Hebron, to transfer Saul’s kingdom to him, according to the word of the Lord. 24 The sons of Judah, bearing shield and spear, six thousand eight hundred, ready for battle. 25 Of the sons of Simeon, of most stalwart men for fighting, seven thousand one hundred.
29 But from the sons of Benjamin, Saul’s brothers, 3,000; for a great part of them was still following the house of Saul. 30 Moreover, from the sons of Ephraim, 20,800, very mighty in vigor, men renowned in their kindreds. 31 And from the half-tribe of Manasseh, 18,000, each by their names, came to constitute David king.
32 And from the sons of Issachar, learned men, who knew each of the times to prescribe what Israel ought to do, 200 chiefs; and all the rest of their tribe followed their counsel. 33 Moreover, from Zebulun, those who were going out to battle and stood in the battle-line equipped with weapons of war, 50,000 came for help, not with a double heart. 34 And from Naphtali, 1,000 chiefs, and with them, equipped with shield and spear, 37,000.
35 From Dan also, prepared for battle, twenty-eight thousand six hundred. 36 And from Asher, going forth to fight, and challenging in the battle-line, forty thousand. 37 Across the Jordan, moreover, from the sons of Reuben, and of Gad, and of the half-tribe of Manasseh, equipped with warlike arms, one hundred twenty thousand.
38 All these warrior men ready for fighting, with a perfect heart came to Hebron, to establish king David over all Israel; but also all the rest from Israel were with one heart, that David might become king. 39 And they were there with David for three days eating and drinking; for their brothers had prepared for them. 40 But also those who were near them, as far as Issachar, and Zabulon, and Nephthali, were bringing breads on donkeys, and camels, and mules, and oxen for eating: flour, cakes, raisins, wine, oil, oxen, rams for all abundance; for indeed there was joy in Israel.
13 1 Now David entered into counsel with the tribunes, and centurions, and all the princes, 2 and he said to all the assembly of Israel: If it pleases you, and from the Lord our God the word which I speak goes forth, let us send to our remaining brothers in all the regions of Israel, and to the priests and Levites who dwell in the suburbs of the cities, that they may be gathered to us, 3 and let us bring back the ark of our God to us: for we did not seek it in the days of Saul. 4 And the whole multitude answered that it should be done so: for the word had pleased all the people. 5 Therefore David gathered together all Israel, from the Sihor of Egypt even to the entrance of Hamath, to bring the ark of God from Cariathiarim.
6 And David went up, and every man of Israel, to the hill of Cariathiarim, which is in Judah, to bring from there the ark of the Lord God who sits upon the cherubim, where his name was invoked. 7 And they placed the ark of God upon a new cart, from the house of Abinadab; but Oza and his brother were driving the cart. 8 Moreover David and all Israel were playing before God with all might, in songs, and in citharas, and psalteries, and tympana, and cymbals, and trumpets.
9 When, however, he had come to the threshing-floor of Chidon, Oza stretched out his hand to sustain the ark: for the ox, frisking, had slightly inclined it. 10 Therefore the Lord was angered against Oza, and struck him, because he had touched the ark: and he died there before the Lord. 11 And David was grieved, because the Lord had made a division upon Oza: and he called that place the Division of Oza, unto the present day.
12 And he feared God at that time, saying: How can I bring the Ark of God in to me ? 13 and for this cause he did not bring it to himself, that is, into the city of David, but turned it aside into the house of Obededom the Gittite. 14 Therefore the Ark of God remained in the house of Obededom three months: and the Lord blessed his house, and all that he had.
14 1 Hiram also, king of Tyre, sent messengers to David, and cedar wood, and artificers of walls and of wood, that they might build him a house. 2 And David recognized that the Lord had confirmed him as king over Israel, and that his kingdom had been lifted up over his people Israel. 3 And David also took other wives in Jerusalem, and he begot sons and daughters. 4 And these are the names of those who were born to him in Jerusalem: Samua, and Sobab, Nathan, and Solomon, 5 Jebahar, and Elisua, and Eliphalet, 6 Noga also, and Napheg, and Japhia, 7 Elisama, and Baaliada, and Eliphalet.
8 But when the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over all Israel, they all went up to seek him; which when David heard, he went out to meet them. 9 Moreover, the Philistines, coming, spread out in the Valley of Rephaim. 10 And David consulted the Lord, saying: Shall I go up against the Philistines, and will you deliver them into my hand? And the Lord said to him: Go up, and I will deliver them into your hand.
11 And when they had gone up to Baalpharasim, David struck them there, and said: God has divided my enemies by my hand, just as waters are divided; and therefore the name of that place was called Baalpharasim. 12 And they left their gods there, which David commanded to be burned. 13 And at another time the Philistines rushed in, and were spread out in the valley.
14 And David consulted God again, and God said to him: Do not go up after them; withdraw from them, and you will come against them opposite the pear trees. 15 And when you hear the sound of one marching in the tops of the pear trees, then you shall go out to battle; for God has gone out before you, to strike the camp of the Philistines. 16 Therefore David did as God had commanded him, and he struck the camp of the Philistines, from Gibeon as far as Gezer.
15 1 Fecit quoque sibi domos in civitate David: et ædificavit locum arcæ Dei, tetenditque ei tabernaculum. 2 Tunc dixit David: Illicitum est ut a quocumque portetur arca Dei nisi a Levitis, quos elegit Dominus ad portandum eam, et ad ministrandum sibi usque in æternum. 3 Congregavitque universum Israël in Jerusalem, ut afferretur arca Dei in locum suum, quem præparaverat ei: 4 necnon et filios Aaron, et Levitas.
15 1 He also made for himself houses in the city of David; and he built a place for the ark of God, and stretched a tabernacle for it. 2 Then David said: It is illicit for the ark of God to be carried by anyone except by the Levites, whom the Lord has chosen to carry it and to minister to Him unto eternity. 3 And he gathered all Israel into Jerusalem, that the ark of God might be brought into its place, which he had prepared for it: 4 as well as the sons of Aaron, and the Levites.
11 And David called Zadok and Abiathar the priests, and the Levites, Uriel, Asaiah, Joël, Shemaiah, Eliel, and Aminadab: 12 and he said to them: You, who are the chiefs of the Levitical families, sanctify yourselves with your brothers, and bring up the ark of the Lord God of Israel to the place that has been prepared for it: 13 lest—as at the beginning, because you were not present—the Lord struck us; so now also it happen, if we do something unlawful. 14 Therefore the priests and the Levites sanctified themselves to carry the ark of the Lord God of Israel. 15 And the sons of Levi bore the ark of God on their shoulders, by poles, as Moses had commanded according to the word of the Lord. 16 And David said to the chiefs of the Levites that they should appoint from among their brothers singers with instruments of music—namely, psalteries, and lyres, and cymbals—so that the sound of rejoicing might resound on high. 17 And they appointed the Levites: Heman the son of Joël, and of his brothers Asaph the son of Berechiah: and of the sons of Merari, their brothers: Ethan the son of Kushaiah. 18 And with them their brothers, in the second order, Zechariah, and Ben, and Jaziel, and Shemiramoth, and Jahiel, and Ani, Eliab, and Benaiah, and Maaseiah, and Mattathiah, and Eliphalu, and Makeniah, and Obed-edom, and Jehiel, doorkeepers.
19 Moreover the singers, Heman, Asaph, and Ethan, clashing on bronze cymbals. 20 But Zacharias, and Oziel, and Semiramoth, and Jahiel, and Ani, and Eliab, and Maasias, and Banaias, on nablas (psalteries) were singing the arcane. 21 Moreover Mathathias, and Eliphalu, and Macenias, and Obededom, and Jehiel, and Ozaziu, on citharas (lyres), for the octave, were singing the epinicion (victory-song).
22 But Chonenias, however, the chief of the Levites, was over the prophesying, to precent the melody; for he was very wise. 23 And Barachias and Elcana, doorkeepers of the ark. 24 Moreover Sebenias, and Josaphat, and Nathanaël, and Amasai, and Zacharias, and Banaias, and Eliezer, priests, were sounding the trumpets before the ark of God: and Obededom and Jehias were doorkeepers of the ark.
25 Therefore David, and all the elders of Israel, and the tribunes, went to carry away the ark of the covenant of the Lord from the house of Obededom with joy. 26 And when God had helped the Levites who were bearing the ark of the covenant of the Lord, seven bulls and seven rams were immolated. 27 Moreover David was clothed with a byssine stole, and all the Levites who were carrying the ark, and the singers, and Chonenias, chief of the prophecy among the singers: but David also was clothed with a linen ephod.
28 And all Israel were escorting the ark of the covenant of the Lord with jubilation, and with the sound of the buccina, and trumpets, and cymbals, and nablas, and citharas resounding. 29 And when the ark of the covenant of the Lord had come as far as the City of David, Michol the daughter of Saul, looking out through a window, saw King David leaping and playing, and she despised him in her heart. 16 1 Therefore they brought the ark of God, and set it in the midst of the tabernacle which David had pitched for it: and they offered holocausts and peace-offerings before God.
4 And he appointed before the ark of the Lord, from the Levites, those who should minister, and make remembrance of his works, and glorify and praise the Lord God of Israel: 5 Asaph as the chief, and his second Zechariah: moreover Jahiel, and Semiramoth, and Jehiel, and Mattathiah, and Eliab, and Benaiah, and Obed-edom: Jehiel over the instruments of the psaltery and the lyres: but Asaph to resound with the cymbals: 6 and Benaiah and Jaziel, priests, to sound the trumpet continually before the ark of the covenant of the Lord.

And let all the people say: Amen, and a hymn to the Lord. 37 So he left there before the ark of the covenant of the Lord Asaph and his brothers, that they might minister in the presence of the ark continually, day by day, and their turns. 38 Moreover Obed-edom, and his brothers, sixty-eight: and Obed-edom the son of Idithun, and Hosa, he appointed as gatekeepers; 39 but Zadok the priest, and his brothers the priests, before the tabernacle of the Lord on the high place that was in Gibeon, 40 to offer burnt offerings to the Lord upon the altar of burnt offering continually, morning and evening, according to all that is written in the Law of the Lord which he commanded to Israel. 41 And after him Heman, and Idithun, and the rest of the chosen, each by his own name, to give thanks to the Lord, for his mercy endures forever.
17 1 But when David was dwelling in his house, he said to Nathan the prophet: Behold, I dwell in a house of cedar; but the ark of the covenant of the Lord is under skins. 2 And Nathan said to David: Do everything that is in your heart; for God is with you. 3 Therefore, in that night the word of God came to Nathan, saying: 4 Go, and speak to David my servant: Thus says the Lord: You shall not build me a house to dwell in.
5 For I have not dwelt in a house from the time that I brought Israel out until this day; but I was always changing the places of the tabernacle, and abiding in a tent with all Israel. 6 Did I speak even to one of the judges of Israel, to whom I had commanded to shepherd my people, and say: Why have you not built me a cedar house? 7 Now therefore thus you shall speak to my servant David: Thus says the Lord of hosts: I took you, when in the pastures you were following the flock, that you might be leader of my people Israel: 8 and I was with you wherever you went, and I struck down all your enemies before you, and I made you a name like that of one of the great ones who are celebrated in the land. 9 And I have given a place to my people Israel: it shall be planted, and shall dwell in it, and no more shall it be moved; nor shall the sons of iniquity wear them down, as at the beginning, 10 from the days when I gave judges to my people Israel, and I humbled all your enemies. I therefore announce to you that the Lord will build you a house.
11 And when you have fulfilled your days that you may go to your fathers, I will raise up your seed after you, which shall be from your sons: and I will establish his kingdom. 12 He himself will build me a house, and I will make firm his throne unto eternity. 13 I will be to him as a father, and he shall be to me as a son: and I will not take away my mercy from him, as I took it away from him who was before you.
16 And when King David had come and had sat before the Lord, he said: Who am I, Lord God, and what is my house, that you should bestow such things upon me ? 17 But even this has seemed little in your sight, and therefore you have spoken concerning the house of your servant even for the future; and you have made me conspicuous over all men, Lord God. 18 What more can David add, since thus you have glorified your servant, and have known him ? 19 Lord, for the sake of your servant, according to your heart, you have done all this magnificence, and you have willed all the great marvels to be known. 20 Lord, there is none like you, and there is no other god besides you, out of all whom we have heard with our ears.
21 For who indeed is another, like your people Israel, a single nation on the earth, to whom God went to liberate and to make a people for himself, and by his magnitude and by terrors to eject nations from before it, whom he had freed from Egypt ? 22 And you have set your people Israel to yourself as a people unto eternity, and you, Lord, have become its God. 23 Now therefore, Lord, let the word which you have spoken to your servant and concerning his house be confirmed forever, and do as you have spoken. 24 And let your name remain and be magnified unto everlasting, and let it be said: The Lord of hosts is the God of Israel, and the house of David his servant enduring before him. 25 For you, O Lord my God, have uncovered the ear of your servant, that you would build him a house: and therefore your servant has found confidence to pray before you. 26 Now therefore, Lord, you are God, and you have spoken such great benefits to your servant. 27 And you have begun to bless the house of your servant, that it may be always before you: for you, Lord, blessing it, it will be blessed in perpetuity.
18 1 And it came to pass after these things, that David struck the Philistines and humbled them, and took Gath and its daughters from the hand of the Philistines, 2 and he struck Moab, and the Moabites became servants to David, offering him gifts. 3 At that time David also struck Adarezer, king of Zobah of the region of Hamath, when he went forth to extend his empire as far as the river Euphrates. 4 And David took a thousand of his chariots, and seven thousand horsemen, and twenty thousand men on foot, and he hamstrung all the horses of the chariots, except for a hundred chariots, which he reserved for himself.
9 When Thou, king of Hamath, heard that David had struck down all the army of Adarezer, king of Zobah, 10 he sent his son Adoram to King David, to ask peace from him and to congratulate him because he had struck and subdued Adarezer; for Thou was an adversary of Adarezer. 11 And King David also consecrated to the Lord all the golden, silver, and bronze vessels, together with the silver and gold that he had taken from all the nations, both from Idumaea and Moab and the sons of Ammon, as well as from the Philistines and Amalek. 12 But Abishai, the son of Zeruiah, struck Edom in the Valley of Salt, eighteen thousand: 13 and he set a garrison in Edom, so that Idumaea served David; and the Lord saved David in all to which he went.
14 Therefore David reigned over all Israël, and he was doing judgment and justice for all his people. 15 Moreover Joab son of Sarviæ was over the army, and Josaphat son of Ahilud over the commentaries: 16 but Sadoc son of Achitob, and Ahimelech son of Abiathar, priests: and Susa, scribe: 17 Banaias also son of Jojadæ over the legions of the Cerethi and the Phelethi: moreover the sons of David, the first at the king’s hand.
19 1 Now it happened that Nahash, king of the sons of Ammon, died, and his son reigned in his place. 2 And David said: I will show mercy toward Hanun, the son of Nahash; for his father showed favor to me. And David sent envoys to console him over the death of his father. And when they had come into the land of the sons of Ammon to console Hanun, 3 the princes of the sons of Ammon said to Hanun: Perhaps you think that David has sent those who would console you out of regard for your father; do you not observe that his servants have come to you to explore, and investigate, and scrutinize your land?
4 Therefore Hanon shaved the servants of David bald, and cut off their tunics from the buttocks down to the feet, and dismissed them. 5 And when they had departed and had reported this to David, he sent to meet them (for they had endured a great contumely) and commanded that they should remain in Jericho until their beards grew, and then return. 6 But when the sons of Ammon saw that they had done an injury to David, both Hanon and the rest of the people, they sent a thousand talents of silver to hire for themselves from Mesopotamia, and from Syria Maacha, and from Soba, chariots and horsemen.
12 Dixitque: Si vicerit me Syrus, auxilio eris mihi: si autem superaverint te filii Ammon, ero tibi in præsidium.
10 Therefore Joab, understanding that battle was being made against him both in front and behind, chose the most valiant men out of all Israel, and went against the Syrian. 11 But the rest of the people he put under the hand of Abishai his brother: and they went against the sons of Ammon. 12 And he said: If the Syrian defeats me, you will be a help to me; but if the sons of Ammon overcome you, I will be a protection to you.
13 Be strengthened, and let us act manfully for our people, and for the cities of our God: but the Lord will do what is good in his sight. 14 Therefore Joab advanced, and the people who were with him, against the Syrian to battle: and he put them to flight. 15 Moreover, the sons of Ammon, seeing that the Syrian had fled, they also fled from Abishai his brother, and entered the city: and Joab likewise returned to Jerusalem.
16 But the Syrian, seeing that he had fallen before Israel, sent messengers and brought up the Syrian who was beyond the river; and Sophach, the commander of the militia of Adarezer, was their leader. 17 And when this had been reported to David, he gathered all Israel and crossed the Jordan, rushed upon them and arrayed the battle line face to face, they fighting against him. 18 But the Syrian fled from Israel, and David slew of the Syrians seven thousand chariots and forty thousand footmen, and Sophach, the commander of the army.
20 1 Now it came to pass after the cycle of the year, at the time when kings are accustomed to proceed to wars, Joab congregated the army and the strength of the soldiery, and laid waste the land of the sons of Ammon; and he went on and besieged Rabbah. But David was remaining in Jerusalem, when Joab struck Rabbah and destroyed it. 2 And David took the crown of Melchom from his head, and he found in it a weight of gold of a talent, and most precious gems, and from it he made a diadem for himself; he also took very many spoils of the city; 3 moreover the people who were in it he led out, and he made threshing-sledges and drags and iron-fitted wagons pass over them, so that they were cut up and crushed.
Thus did David to all the cities of the sons of Ammon: and he returned with all his people to Jerusalem. 4 After these things war was undertaken in Gazer against the Philistines, in which Sobochai the Hushathite struck down Saphai of the stock of the Rephaim, and he humbled them. 5 Also another war was waged against the Philistines, in which Adeodatus son of Saltus, a Bethlehemite, struck the brother of Goliath the Gittite, the shaft of whose spear was like a weavers’ beam.
6 But another war also happened in Gath, in which there was a man of very great stature, having six digits on each hand and foot, that is, in all 24; who likewise had been generated from the stock of Rapha. 7 He blasphemed Israel; and Jonathan, the son of Samaa, the brother of David, struck him down. These are the sons of Rapha in Gath, who fell by the hand of David and his servants.
21 1 But Satan rose up against Israel, and incited David to number Israel. 2 And David said to Joab and to the princes of the people: Go, and number Israel from Beersheba as far as Dan: and bring me the number that I may know. 3 And Joab answered: May the Lord increase his people a hundredfold beyond what they are: are they not, my lord king, all your servants ? why does my lord seek this, which may be reckoned as sin to Israel ? 4 But the word of the king prevailed more: and Joab went out, and went around all Israel: and he returned to Jerusalem, 5 and David gave the number of those whom he had gone around: and the whole number of Israel was found, 1,100,000 men drawing the sword: but of Judah, 470,000 warriors. 6 For Levi and Benjamin he did not number: because Joab was executing the king’s command unwillingly.
7 But what had been commanded displeased God, and he struck Israel. 8 And David said to God: I have sinned exceedingly to have done this; I beseech you, remove the iniquity of your servant, for I have acted insipiently. 9 And the Lord spoke to Gad, David’s seer, saying: 10 Go, and speak to David, and say to him: Thus says the Lord: I give you the option of three: choose one which you will, and I will do it to you. 11 And when Gad had come to David, he said to him: Thus says the Lord: Choose what you will: 12 either three years of famine; or three months of you fleeing your enemies, and their sword not being able to be escaped; or three days of the Lord’s sword, and a pestilence to range in the land, and the angel of the Lord to slay throughout all the borders of Israel: now therefore see what I shall answer to him who sent me. 13 And David said to Gad: On every side straits press me; but it is better for me to fall into the hands of the Lord, because many are his mercies, than into the hands of men.
14 Therefore the Lord sent a pestilence into Israel, and from Israel seventy thousand men fell. 15 He also sent an angel into Jerusalem to strike it; and while it was being struck, the Lord saw, and was moved to pity over the magnitude of the evil, and he commanded the angel who was striking: It is sufficient; now let your hand cease. Moreover, the angel of the Lord was standing beside the threshing-floor of Ornan the Jebusite. 16 And David, lifting his eyes, saw the angel of the Lord standing between heaven and earth, with a drawn sword in his hand, turned against Jerusalem; and both he and the elders, clothed in sackcloth, fell prone to the ground.
17 And David said to God: Am not I the one who commanded that the people be numbered ? I, who have sinned ? I, who have done evil ? What has this flock merited ? O Lord my God, let your hand, I beseech, be turned against me and against the house of my father: but let your people not be struck. 18 And the angel of the Lord commanded Gad to say to David that he should go up and erect an altar to the Lord God on the threshing-floor of Ornan the Jebusite. 19 Therefore David went up according to the word of Gad, which he had spoken to him in the name of the Lord. 20 Now Ornan, when he had looked up and seen the angel, he and his four sons with him hid themselves: for at that time he was threshing wheat on the threshing-floor.
21 Therefore when David came to Ornan, Ornan saw him, and went out from the threshing-floor to meet him, and paid him homage, prostrate on the ground. 22 And David said to him: Give me the place of your threshing-floor, that I may build on it an altar to the Lord, so that you may receive as much silver as it is worth, and the plague may cease from the people. 23 But Ornan said to David: Take it, and let my lord the king do whatever pleases him: and I also give the oxen for a holocaust, and the threshing-sledges for wood, and the wheat for the sacrifice: I will provide all gladly.
24 And King David said to him: By no means shall it be so, but I will give silver as much as it is worth; for neither ought I to take it from you and thus offer to the Lord holocausts gratis. 25 Therefore David gave to Ornan for the place 600 shekels of gold, of most just weight. 26 And he built there an altar to the Lord, and offered holocausts and peace-offerings, and invoked the Lord; and He hearkened to him with fire from heaven upon the altar of the holocaust.
27 And the Lord commanded the angel, and he turned his sword into its sheath. 28 Immediately therefore David, seeing that the Lord had heard him on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite, immolated victims there. 29 Now the Tabernacle of the Lord, which Moses had made in the desert, and the altar of holocausts, at that time was on the high place of Gibeon.
30 And David did not prevail to go to the altar to beseech God there: for he had been terrified with excessive fear, seeing the sword of the angel of the Lord. 22 1 And David said: This is the house of God, and this the altar for a holocaust for Israel. 2 And he commanded that all the proselytes from the land of Israel be gathered, and he appointed from them stonecutters for cutting stones and for polishing, that the house of God might be built. 3 David also prepared very much iron for the nails of the doors, and for the commissures and junctures, and an innumerable weight of bronze.
4 The cedar wood also could not be estimated, which the Sidonians and Tyrians had transported to David. 5 And David said: Solomon my son is a very young and delicate boy; but the house which I wish to be built for the Lord ought to be such that it be named in all regions: therefore I will prepare the necessaries for it. And for this cause, before his death, he prepared all the outlays.
6 And he called Solomon his son, and commanded him to build a house to the Lord God of Israel. 7 And David said to Solomon: My son, it was my will to build a house to the name of the Lord my God: 8 but the word of the Lord came to me, saying: You have poured out much blood, and you have warred very many wars: you will not be able to build a house to my name, with so much blood poured out before me: 9 a son who shall be born to you will be a most peaceable man: for I will make him rest from all his enemies round about: and for this cause he will be called Pacific; and I will give peace and otium in Israel all his days. 10 He himself will build a house to my name, and he himself will be to me for a son, and I will be to him for a father: and I will make firm the throne of his kingdom over Israel forever. 11 Now therefore, my son, may the Lord be with you, and prosper, and build the house to the Lord your God as he has spoken concerning you. 12 May the Lord also give prudence and sense so that you may be able to rule Israel, and to keep the law of the Lord your God.
13 Then indeed you will be able to profit, if you will keep the mandates and the judgments which the Lord prescribed to Moses to teach Israel. Be strengthened, and act manfully: do not fear, nor be dismayed. 14 Behold, in my poverty I have prepared the expenses of the house of the Lord: one hundred thousand talents of gold, and a thousand thousands of talents of silver; but as for bronze and iron there is no weighing, for the number is conquered by magnitude; I have prepared wood and stones for all expenditures. 15 You also have very many craftsmen, stonecutters, and masons, and workers in wood, and most skilled men of all arts for doing the work, 16 in gold and silver and bronze and iron, whose number is without number.
17 David also commanded all the princes of Israel to aid Solomon his son: 18 You see, he said, that the Lord your God is with you, and He has given you rest all around, and has delivered all your enemies into your hands, and the land is subjected before the Lord and before His people. 19 Therefore give your hearts and your souls, to seek the Lord your God; and arise, and build a sanctuary to the Lord God, so that the ark of the covenant of the Lord and the vessels consecrated to the Lord may be brought into the house which is being built for the name of the Lord.
23 1 Thus David, old and full of days, made Solomon his son king over Israel. 2 And he gathered all the princes of Israel, and the priests and the Levites. 3 And the Levites were numbered from thirty years and up; and there were found thirty-eight thousand men. 4 Of these, twenty-four thousand were chosen and distributed for the ministry of the house of the Lord; moreover, of overseers and judges, six thousand.
23 The sons of Musi: Moholi, and Eder, and Jerimoth, three. 24 These are the sons of Levi in their cognations and families, chiefs by turns, and the head-count of each who were performing the works of the ministry of the house of the Lord, from twenty years and upward. 25 For David said: The Lord God of Israel has given rest to his people, and a habitation in Jerusalem unto eternity.
26 Nor shall it be the office of the Levites that they any longer carry the tabernacle and all its vessels for ministering. 27 Also according to the most recent precepts of David, the number of the sons of Levi shall be reckoned from twenty years and up. 28 And they shall be under the hand of the sons of Aaron for the service of the house of the Lord, in the vestibules, and in the exedrae, and in the place of purification, and in the sanctuary, and in all the works of the ministry of the temple of the Lord.
29 But the priests are over the bread of the proposition, and for the sacrifice of fine flour, and for the unleavened lagana, and the frying-pan, and for roasting, and over every weight and measure. 30 But the Levites are to stand in the morning to confess and to sing to the Lord; and likewise at evening, 31 both in the oblation of the holocausts of the Lord, and on sabbaths and calends and the remaining solemnities, according to the number and ceremonies of each thing, continually before the Lord. 32 And let them keep the observances of the tabernacle of the covenant, and the rite of the sanctuary, and the observance of the sons of Aaron their brothers, so that they may minister in the house of the Lord.
3 And David divided them, that is, Zadok of the sons of Eleazar, and Ahimelech of the sons of Ithamar, according to their turns and ministry. 4 And there were found far more of the sons of Eleazar among the principal men than of the sons of Ithamar. Moreover, he divided to them—namely, to the sons of Eleazar—sixteen leaders by families; and to the sons of Ithamar, by their families and their houses, eight.
5 Moreover he divided both families among themselves by lots: for there were princes of the sanctuary, and princes of God, both from the sons of Eleazar and from the sons of Ithamar. 6 And Shemaiah the son of Nethanel, a Levite scribe, recorded them before the king and the princes, and Zadok the priest, and Ahimelech the son of Abiathar, and also the chiefs of the priestly and Levitical families: one house, which presided over the others, Eleazar: and the other house, which had the others under itself, Ithamar. 7 And the first lot came out for Jojarib, the second for Jedei, 8 the third for Harim, the fourth for Seorim, 9 the fifth for Melchia, the sixth for Maiman, 10 the seventh for Accos, the eighth for Abia, 11 the ninth for Jesua, the tenth for Sechenia, 12 the eleventh for Eliasib, the twelfth for Jacim, 13 the thirteenth for Hoppha, the fourteenth for Isbaab, 14 the fifteenth for Belga, the sixteenth for Emmer, 15 the seventeenth for Hezir, the eighteenth for Aphses, 16 the nineteenth for Pheteia, the twentieth for Hezechiel, 17 the twenty-first for Jachin, the twenty-second for Gamul, 18 the twenty-third for Dalaiau, the twenty-fourth for Maaziau.
19 These were their courses according to their ministries, that they might enter the house of the Lord, and according to their rite under the hand of Aaron their father, as the Lord God of Israël had commanded. 20 Moreover, of the sons of Levi who had been left, of the sons of Amram was Subaël, and of the sons of Subaël, Jehedeia. 21 Also, of the sons of Rohobiæ, the chief was Jesias. 22 But of Isaari, the son was Salemoth, and the son of Salemoth, Jahath: 23 and his son Jeriau, the first, Amarias the second, Jahaziel the third, Jecmaan the fourth.
29 But the son of Cis: Jerameel. 30 The sons of Musi: Moholi, Eder, and Jerimoth: these are the sons of Levi according to the houses of their families. 31 And they also cast lots alongside their brothers, the sons of Aaron, before King David, and Sadoc and Ahimelech, and the princes of the priestly and Levitical families, both the greater and the lesser: the lot divided all equally.
25 1 Therefore David and the magistrates of the army set apart for ministry the sons of Asaph, and Heman, and Idithun, who would prophesy with citharas, and psalteries, and cymbals according to their number, serving in the office dedicated to them. 2 Of the sons of Asaph: Zachur, and Joseph, and Nathania, and Asarela, sons of Asaph: under the hand of Asaph, prophesying beside the king. 3 Moreover Idithun: the sons of Idithun, Godolias, Sori, Jeseias, and Hasabias, and Mathathias, six, under the hand of their father Idithun, who with the cithara was prophesying over those confessing and praising the Lord.
4 Heman also: the sons of Heman, Bocciau, Mathaniau, Oziel, Subuel, and Jerimoth, Hananias, Hanani, Eliatha, Geddelthi, and Romemthiezer, and Jesbacassa, Mellothi, Othir, Mahazioth: 5 all these were the sons of Heman, the seer of the king in the words of God, to exalt the horn; and God gave to Heman fourteen sons and three daughters. 6 All of them were distributed under the hand of their father for singing in the temple of the Lord, on cymbals, and psalteries, and citharas, for the ministries of the house of the Lord according to the king: namely, Asaph, and Idithun, and Heman. 7 Now the number of them, with their brothers, who were instructing the song of the Lord, all instructors, was two hundred eighty-eight.
4 Filii autem Obededom: Semeias primogenitus, Jozabad secundus, Joaha tertius, Sachar quartus, Nathanaël quintus, 5 Ammiel sextus, Issachar septimus, Phollathi octavus: quia benedixit illi Dominus.
26 1 Now the divisions of the doorkeepers: from the Korites, Meselemia, son of Core, from the sons of Asaph. 2 The sons of Meselemia: Zacharias the firstborn, Jadihel the second, Zabadias the third, Jathanaël the fourth, 3 Ælam the fifth, Johanan the sixth, Elioënai the seventh. 4 Moreover the sons of Obededom: Semeias the firstborn, Jozabad the second, Joaha the third, Sachar the fourth, Nathanaël the fifth, 5 Ammiel the sixth, Issachar the seventh, Phollathi the eighth: because the Lord blessed him.
6 But to Semei, his son, sons were born, chiefs of their own households: for they were very mighty men. 7 Therefore the sons of Semeiæ: Othni, and Raphaël, and Obed, Elzabad, his brothers, very mighty men: Eliu also and Samachias. 8 All these, of the sons of Obededom: they themselves, and their sons and their brothers, mighty for ministering, sixty-two of Obededom.
9 Moreover, the sons of Meselemiah, and their brothers, very robust, were eighteen. 10 But of Hosa, that is, of the sons of Merari: Semri the chief (for he was not the firstborn, and therefore his father had set him as chief), 11 Hilkiah second, Tebaliah third, Zechariah fourth: all these, sons and brothers of Hosa, were thirteen. 12 These were divided into doorkeepers, so that they might always be chiefs of the watches, and their brothers likewise might minister in the house of the Lord.
13 Therefore lots were cast equally, both for the small and the great, by their families, for each of the gates. 14 Therefore the eastern lot fell to Shelemiah. But to Zechariah, his son, a most prudent and erudite man, the northern quarter fell by lot. 15 To Obed-edom, indeed, and to his sons, to the south: in which part of the house there was the council of elders.
16 Sephim and Hosa to the west, beside the gate which leads to the way of the ascent: guard against guard. 17 But to the east, six Levites; and to the north, four per day; and to the south likewise in the day, four; and where the council was, two and two. 18 And in the little cells of the gatekeepers to the west, four on the way, and two apiece by the cells.
20 Porro Achias erat super thesauros domus Dei, et vasa sanctorum. 21 Filii Ledan, filii Gersonni: de Ledan principes familiarum Ledan, et Gersonni, Jehieli. 22 Filii Jehieli: Zathan, et Joël fratres ejus super thesauros domus Domini.
20 Moreover Achias was over the treasuries of the house of God, and the sacred vessels. 21 The sons of Ledan, the sons of the Gershonite: of Ledan, the chiefs of the families of Ledan and of the Gershonite, Jehieli. 22 The sons of Jehieli: Zathan, and Joël, his brothers, over the treasuries of the house of the Lord.
26 This Selemith, and his brothers, were over the treasuries of the holy things which King David, and the chiefs of families, and the tribunes, and the centurions, and the leaders of the army had sanctified, 27 from the wars and the manubiae of battles, which they had consecrated for the instauration and the furnishings of the temple of the Lord. 28 Moreover all these were sanctified by Samuel the seer, and Saul son of Kish, and Abner son of Ner, and Joab son of Zeruiah: all who had sanctified them by the hand of Selemith and his brothers. 29 But over the Izharites there presided Chenaniah, and his sons, for the external works over Israel, to teach and to judge them.
Moreover, of the Hebronites, Hasabias and his brothers, very mighty men, 1,700, were set over Israel beyond the Jordan toward the west, in all the works of the Lord and in the service of the king. And the chief of the Hebronites was Jeria, according to their families and clans. In the 40th year of the reign of David they were reviewed, and there were found valiant men in Jazer of Gilead, and his brothers, in the vigor of age, 2,700 heads of families.
27 1 Now the sons of Israel, according to their number—the princes of families, tribunes, and centurions, and prefects—who ministered to the king according to their divisions, going in and going out for each month in the year, each one presided over 24,000. 2 Over the first division in the first month Jesboam, son of Zabdiel, presided, and under him were 24,000; 3 of the sons of Phares, the chief of all the princes in the army in the first month. 4 The second month’s division was held by Dudia the Ahohite, and after him another named Macelloth, who governed a part of the army of 24,000.
5 The leader also of the third cohort in the third month was Banaias, son of Jojadæ, a priest: and in his division twenty-four thousand. 6 He is that Banaias, the most valiant among the thirty, and over the thirty: moreover, over his cohort was Amizabad, his son. 7 The fourth, in the fourth month, Asahel the brother of Joab, and Zabadias his son after him: and in his cohort twenty-four thousand.
8 The fifth, in the fifth month, the prince Samaoth the Jezerite: and in his troop twenty-four thousand. 9 The sixth, in the sixth month, Hira son of Acces, the Thecuite: and in his troop twenty-four thousand. 10 The seventh, in the seventh month, Helles the Phallonite, of the sons of Ephraim: and in his troop twenty-four thousand.
11 Eighth, in the eighth month, Sobochai the Hushathite, of the stock of Zerah: and in his troop twenty-four thousand. 12 Ninth, in the ninth month, Abiezer the Anathothite, of the sons of Benjamin: and in his troop twenty-four thousand. 13 Tenth, in the tenth month, Marai—he too a Netophathite—of the stock of Zerah: and in his troop twenty-four thousand.
14 The eleventh, in the eleventh month, Benaiah the Pharathonite of the sons of Ephraim: and in his troop twenty-four thousand. 15 The twelfth, in the twelfth month, Holdai the Netophathite, of the stock of Gothoniel: and in his troop twenty-four thousand. 16 Moreover, over the tribes presided Israel: for the Reubenites, the leader Eliezer son of Zechri; for the Simeonites, the leader Saphatias son of Maacha: 17 for the Levites, Hasabias son of Camuel: for the Aaronites, Sadoc: 18 for Judah, Eliu the brother of David: for Issachar, Amri son of Michael. 19 For the Zebulonites, Jesmaias son of Abdias: for the Naphtalites, Jerimoth son of Ozriel: 20 for the sons of Ephraim, Osee son of Ozaziu: for the half-tribe of Manasseh, Joël son of Phadaiah: 21 and for the half-tribe of Manasseh in Gilead, Jaddo son of Zachariah: but for Benjamin, Jasiel son of Abner: 22 and for Dan, Ezrihel son of Jeroham: these are the princes of the sons of Israel. 23 But David did not wish to number them from twenty years and downward: because the Lord had said that he would multiply Israel as the stars of the heaven. 24 Joab son of Zeruiah had begun to number, and did not complete it: because upon this wrath had fallen upon Israel, and therefore the number of those who had been enrolled was not reported in the annals of King David.
25 But over the king’s treasuries was Azmoth son of Adiel; and over those treasuries that were in the cities, and in the villages, and in the towers, Jonathan son of Ozias presided. 26 And over rural work, and the husbandmen who tilled the land, Ezri son of Chelub was set; 27 and over the cultivators of the vineyards, Shemaiah the Romathite; but over the wine cellars, Zabdias the Aphonite. 28 For over the olive-groves and fig-orchards that were in the plains, Balanam the Gederite; but over the storehouses of oil, Joas. 29 Moreover, over the herds that pastured in Sharon, Setrai the Sharonite was appointed; and over the oxen in the valleys, Saphat son of Adli; 30 but over the camels, Ubil the Ishmaelite; and over the asses, Jadias the Meronathite; 31 and over the sheep also, Jaziz the Hagrite: all these were chiefs of the substance of King David.
28 1 Therefore David convoked all the princes of Israel, the leaders of the tribes, and the prefects of the companies who ministered to the king; the tribunes also and the centurions, and those who were over the substance and possessions of the king, and his sons with the eunuchs, and all the mighty and most robust in the army at Jerusalem. 2 And when the king had risen and stood, he said: Hear me, my brothers and my people: I have resolved to build a house in which the ark of the covenant of the Lord would rest, and the footstool of the feet of our God; and for building I have prepared all things. 3 But God said to me: You shall not build a house for my name, because you are a man of war, and you have shed blood.
4 But the Lord God of Israel chose me out of the whole house of my father, that I should be king over Israel for ever: for out of Judah he chose the princes; and out of the house of Judah, the house of my father; and from the sons of my father it pleased him to choose me as king over all Israel. 5 And even from my sons (for the Lord gave me many sons) he chose Solomon my son to sit upon the throne of the kingdom of the Lord over Israel, 6 and he said to me: Solomon your son shall build my house and my atria; for him I have chosen for myself as a son, and I will be to him for a father. 7 And I will make firm his kingdom unto eternity, if he shall persevere to do my precepts and judgments, as also today. 8 Now therefore, before the whole assembly of Israel, our God hearing, keep and thoroughly seek out all the commandments of the Lord our God: that you may possess the good land, and leave it to your sons after you unto everlasting.
9 But you, Solomon my son, know the God of your father, and serve him with a perfect heart, with a willing mind: for the Lord scrutinizes all hearts, and understands all the cogitations of minds. If you seek him, you will find him: but if you forsake him, he will cast you off forever. 10 Now therefore, since the Lord has chosen you to build the house of the sanctuary, be strengthened, and perfect it.
11 And David gave to Solomon his son the description of the portico, and of the temple, and of the cellars, and of the upper room, and of the chambers in the adyta, and of the house of propitiation, 12 as well as of all the atria and exedrae which he had devised around, for the treasuries of the house of the Lord, and for the treasuries of the holy things, 13 and of the priestly and Levitical divisions, for all the works of the house of the Lord, and for all the vessels of the ministry of the temple of the Lord. 14 Gold by weight for each of the vessels of ministry; the weight of silver likewise, according to the diversity of the vessels and of the works.
15 But also for the golden candelabra, and for their lamps, he assigned gold according to the measure of each candelabrum and of the lamps. Likewise also for the silver candelabra and for their lamps, according to the diversity of the measure, he handed over the weight of silver. 16 He also gave gold for the tables of the proposition according to the diversity of the tables; likewise also silver for the other silver tables.
17 To the little forks as well, and the phials, and the thuribles of most pure gold, and the golden little bowls, according to the quality of the measure, he apportioned the weight for each bowl and each bowl. Likewise also for the silver lions he set apart a different weight of silver. 18 Moreover, to the altar on which incense is burned, he gave the purest gold: so that from it might be made the likeness of the chariot of the cherubim, stretching out their wings and veiling the Ark of the covenant of the Lord.
20 David also said to Solomon his son: Act manfully, and be strengthened, and do: do not fear, and do not be dismayed: for the Lord my God will be with you, and he will not let you go nor forsake you, until you complete all the work of the ministry of the house of the Lord. 21 Behold the divisions of the priests and Levites: for every ministry of the house of the Lord they stand by you, and are ready, and both the princes and the people know to do all your precepts. 29 1 And King David spoke to all the assembly: Solomon my son, him alone God has chosen, still a boy and tender: for the work is great, for the habitation is not prepared for man, but for God.
2 I, however, with all my strength have prepared the expenses of the house of my God: gold for golden vessels, and silver for silver ones, bronze for bronze, iron for iron, wood for wooden work; and onyx stones, and, as it were, stibnite stones, and of diverse colors, and every precious stone, and Parian marble in the greatest abundance: 3 and beyond these things which I have offered in the house of my God, from my private wealth, gold and silver I give into the temple of my God, besides those things which I have prepared for the holy shrine. 4 Three thousand talents of gold, of the gold of Ophir, and seven thousand talents of most refined silver, for gilding the walls of the temple.
5 And wherever there is need of gold from gold, and wherever there is need of silver from silver, let the works be done by the hands of artisans: and if anyone offers of his own accord, let him fill his hand today, and offer whatever he wishes to the Lord. 6 Therefore the chiefs of the families pledged, and the nobles of the tribes of Israel, as well as the tribunes and the centurions, and the princes of the king’s possessions. 7 And they gave for the works of the house of God five thousand talents of gold, and ten thousand solidi: ten thousand talents of silver, and eighteen thousand talents of bronze: and one hundred thousand talents of iron.
9 And the people rejoiced when they pledged vows of their own accord, because with their whole heart they were offering them to the Lord; but King David also rejoiced with great joy. 10 And he blessed the Lord before the whole multitude, and said: Blessed are you, O Lord God of Israel, our father, from eternity unto eternity. 11 Yours, O Lord, is magnificence, and power, and glory, and victory; and to you is praise; for all things that are in heaven and on earth are yours; yours, O Lord, is the kingdom, and you are over all princes.
14 Who am I, and who is my people, that we should be able to promise all these things to you ? Yours are all things: and what we have received from your hand, we have given to you. 15 For we are strangers before you and sojourners, just as all our fathers. Our days are like a shadow upon the earth, and there is no abiding.
16 Lord our God, all this abundance which we have prepared that a house might be built for your holy Name is from your hand, and all things are yours. 17 I know, my God, that you prove hearts and love simplicity; whence I too, in the simplicity of my heart, gladly have offered all these things: and your people who have been found here I saw, with immense joy, offering donaries to you. 18 Lord God of Abraham, and Isaac, and Israel, our fathers, keep forever this will of their heart, and may this mind remain always in veneration of you.
19 Also to Solomon my son give a perfect heart, that he may keep your commandments, your testimonies, and your ceremonies, and do all things: and let him build the temple, the costs of which I have prepared. 20 Moreover David commanded the whole church: Bless the Lord our God. And all the church blessed the Lord, the God of their fathers: and they bowed themselves, and worshiped God, and then the king.
21 And they immolated sacrificial victims to the Lord, and they offered holocausts on the following day: a thousand bulls, a thousand rams, a thousand lambs with their libations, and with the entire rite most abundantly for all Israel. 22 And they ate and drank before the Lord on that day with great joy. And they anointed Solomon, the son of David, a second time. Moreover, they anointed him as prince for the Lord, and Zadok as high priest.
23 And Solomon sat upon the throne of the Lord as king in place of David his father, and he pleased all; and all Israel obeyed him. 24 But also all the princes, and the mighty, and all the sons of King David gave their hand, and were subject to King Solomon. 25 Therefore the Lord magnified Solomon over all Israel, and gave him the glory of the kingdom such as no king of Israel before him had. 26 Therefore David the son of Jesse reigned over all Israel. 27 And the days in which he reigned over Israel were forty years: in Hebron he reigned seven years, and in Jerusalem thirty-three years. 28 And he died in good old age, full of days, and riches, and glory; and Solomon his son reigned in his stead.
29 Now the acts of King David, the earlier and the latest, are written in the book of Samuel the seer, and in the book of Nathan the prophet, and in the volume of Gad the seer: 30 and of the entirety of his reign, and his fortitude, and the times which passed under him, whether in Israel or in all the kingdoms of the earth.
