3 and he went with the whole multitude to the high place at Gibeon, where was the tabernacle of the covenant of God, which Moses, the servant of God, had made in the wilderness

4 but David had brought the ark of God from Kiriath-jearim to the place which he had prepared for it, and where he had fixed for it a tabernacle, that is, in Jerusalem.

5 altare quoque aeneum quod fabricatus fuerat Beselehel filius Uri filii Ur ibi erat coram tabernaculo Domini quod et requisivit Salomon et omnis ecclesia

5 and the bronze altar which Bezalel son of Uri, son of Hur, had made was there before the tabernacle of the Lord; and Solomon and all the congregation sought it.

6 ascenditque Salomon ad altare aeneum coram tabernaculo foederis Domini et obtulit in eo mille hostias

6 and Solomon went up to the brazen altar before the tabernacle of the covenant of the Lord, and he offered on it a thousand sacrificial victims

7 ecce autem in ipsa nocte apparuit ei Deus dicens postula quod vis ut dem tibi

7 behold, moreover, in that very night God appeared to him, saying: ask what you wish that I may give to you

8 dixitque Salomon Deo tu fecisti cum David patre meo misericordiam magnam et constituisti me regem pro eo

8 and Solomon said to God: You have shown great mercy toward David my father, and you have constituted me king in his place

9 nunc igitur Domine Deus impleatur sermo tuus quem pollicitus es David patri meo tu enim fecisti me regem super populum tuum multum qui tam innumerabilis est quam pulvis terrae

9 Now therefore, Lord God, let your word be fulfilled which you promised to David my father; for you have made me king over your numerous people, who are as innumerable as the dust of the earth.

10 da mihi sapientiam et intellegentiam ut egrediar coram populo tuo et ingrediar quis enim potest hunc populum tuum digne qui tam grandis est iudicare

10 give to me wisdom and intelligence that I may go out before your people and come in for who indeed can judge this your people worthily who is so great

11 dixit autem Deus ad Salomonem quia hoc magis placuit cordi tuo et non postulasti divitias et substantiam et gloriam neque animas eorum qui te oderunt sed nec dies vitae plurimos petisti autem sapientiam et scientiam ut iudicare possis populum meum super quem constitui te regem

11 But God said to Solomon: because this was more pleasing to your heart, and you did not ask for riches and substance and glory, nor for the lives of those who hate you, nor did you ask for many days of life, but asked for wisdom and knowledge so that you might be able to judge my people over whom I have constituted you king.

12 sapientia et scientia data sunt tibi divitias autem et substantiam et gloriam dabo tibi ita ut nullus in regibus nec ante te nec post te fuerit similis tui

12 wisdom and knowledge have been given to you; moreover riches and substance and glory I will give you, so that no one among the kings, neither before you nor after you, will be like you.

13 venit ergo Salomon ab excelso Gabaon in Hierusalem coram tabernaculo foederis et regnavit super Israhel

13 Therefore Solomon came from the high place of Gibeon to Jerusalem, before the tabernacle of the covenant, and he reigned over Israel

14 congregavitque sibi currus et equites et facti sunt ei mille quadringenti currus et duodecim milia equitum et fecit eos esse in urbibus quadrigarum et cum rege in Hierusalem

14 and he congregated to himself chariots and horsemen, and there came to be for him 1,400 chariots and 12,000 horsemen; and he made them be in the cities of the chariots and with the king in Jerusalem

15 praebuitque rex argentum et aurum in Hierusalem quasi lapides et cedros quasi sycomoros quae nascuntur in campestribus multitudine magna

15 and the king made silver and gold in Jerusalem like stones, and cedars like sycamores which grow in the plains, in great multitude

16 adducebantur autem ei et equi de Aegypto et de Coa a negotiatoribus regis qui ibant et coemebant pretio

16 moreover, horses were brought in to him from Egypt and from Coa by the king’s merchants, who would go and buy up at a price

17 quadrigam equorum sescentis argenteis et equum centum quinquaginta similiter de universis regnis Cettheorum et a regibus Syriae emptio celebrabatur

17 a four-horse chariot for six hundred silver pieces, and a horse for one hundred fifty; likewise from all the kingdoms of the Hittites and from the kings of Syria the purchase was conducted

1 decrevit autem Salomon aedificare domum nomini Domini et palatium sibi

1 But Solomon decreed to build a house for the name of the Lord, and a palace for himself.

2 et numeravit septuaginta milia virorum portantium umeris et octoginta milia qui caederent lapides in montibus praepositosque eorum tria milia sescentos

2 and he numbered seventy thousand men bearing on their shoulders, and eighty thousand who would hew stones in the mountains, and their overseers, three thousand six hundred.

3 misit quoque ad Hiram regem Tyri dicens sicut egisti cum David patre meo et misisti ei ligna cedrina ut aedificaret sibi domum in qua et habitavit

3 he also sent to Hiram, king of Tyre, saying: just as you acted with David my father and sent him cedrine wood, that he might build himself a house in which he also dwelt

4 sic fac mecum ut aedificem domum nomini Domini Dei mei et consecrem eam ad adolendum incensum coram illo et fumiganda aromata et ad propositionem panum sempiternam et holocaustomata mane et vespere sabbatis quoque et neomeniis et sollemnitatibus Domini Dei nostri in sempiternum quae mandata sunt Israheli

4 do thus with me, that I may build a house for the name of the Lord my God, and consecrate it for burning incense before him and for fumigating aromatics, and for the perpetual presentation of the breads, and for holocausts morning and evening, also on the sabbaths and at the new moons and the solemnities of the Lord our God, in perpetuity—things which have been mandated to Israel.

5 domus autem quam aedificare cupio magna est magnus est enim Deus noster super omnes deos

5 but the house which I desire to build is great, for our God is great above all gods

6 quis ergo poterit praevalere ut aedificet ei dignam domum si caelum et caeli caelorum capere eum non queunt quantus ego sum ut possim ei aedificare domum sed ad hoc tantum ut adoleatur incensum coram illo

6 who then will be able to prevail to build for him a worthy house, if heaven and the heaven of heavens cannot contain him? what am i, that i should be able to build him a house—except for this only: that incense may be burned before him.

7 mitte igitur mihi virum eruditum qui noverit operari in auro et argento aere ferro purpura coccino et hyacintho et qui sciat scalpere celata cum his artificibus quos mecum habeo in Iudaea et in Hierusalem quos praeparavit David pater meus

7 send to me therefore an erudite man who knows how to work in gold and silver, bronze, iron, purple, scarlet, and hyacinth, and who knows how to engrave chased work, together with those artisans whom I have with me in Judea and in Jerusalem, whom David my father prepared

8 sed et ligna cedrina mitte mihi et arceuthina et pinea de Libano scio enim quod servi tui noverint caedere ligna de Libano et erunt servi mei cum servis tuis

8 but also send me cedar-wood and juniper-wood and pine from Lebanon, for I know that your servants know how to cut timber from Lebanon, and my servants will be with your servants

9 ut parentur mihi ligna plurima domus enim quam cupio aedificare magna est nimis et inclita

9 that very many timbers be prepared for me, for the house which I desire to build is exceedingly great and renowned

10 praeterea operariis qui caesuri sunt ligna servis tuis dabo in cibaria tritici choros viginti milia et hordei choros totidem olei quoque sata viginti milia

10 moreover, to the workmen who are going to cut the timber—your servants—I will give for provisions twenty thousand kors of wheat and just as many kors of barley, and also twenty thousand measures of oil

11 dixit autem Hiram rex Tyri per litteras quas miserat Salomoni quia dilexit Dominus populum suum idcirco te regnare fecit super eum

11 Now Hiram, king of Tyre, said by the letters which he sent to Solomon: Because the Lord has loved his people, therefore he has made you reign over them.

12 et addidit dicens benedictus Dominus Deus Israhel qui fecit caelum et terram qui dedit David regi filium sapientem et eruditum et sensatum atque prudentem ut aedificaret domum Domino et palatium sibi

12 and he added, saying: blessed is the Lord God of Israel, who made heaven and earth, who gave to David the king a son wise and erudite and sensible and prudent, that he might build a house for the Lord and a palace for himself

13 misi ergo tibi virum prudentem et scientissimum Hiram patrem meum

13 I have therefore sent to you a prudent and most knowledgeable man, Hiram my father.

14 filium mulieris de filiabus Dan cuius pater Tyrius fuit qui noverit operari in auro et argento et aere et ferro et marmore et lignis in purpura quoque et hyacintho et bysso et coccino et qui sciat celare omnem scalpturam et adinvenire prudenter quodcumque in opere necessarium est cum artificibus tuis et cum artificibus domini mei David patris tui

14 the son of a woman from the daughters of Dan, whose father was a Tyrian, who knows how to work in gold and silver and bronze and iron and marble and wood, also in purple and hyacinth and byssus and scarlet, and who knows how to engrave every carving and prudently to devise whatever is necessary in the work, with your craftsmen and with the craftsmen of my lord David your father

15 triticum ergo et hordeum et oleum et vinum quae pollicitus es domine mi mitte servis tuis

15 therefore send to your servants the wheat and barley and oil and wine which you have promised, my lord

16 nos autem caedemus ligna de Libano quot necessaria habueris et adplicabimus ea ratibus per mare in Ioppe tuum erit transferre ea in Hierusalem

16 but we will fell timber from Lebanon as much as you shall have need, and we will convey them on rafts by sea to Joppa; it will be yours to transfer them to Jerusalem

17 numeravit igitur Salomon omnes viros proselytos qui erant in terra Israhel post dinumerationem quam dinumeravit David pater eius et inventi sunt centum quinquaginta milia et tria milia sescenti

17 Therefore Solomon numbered all the proselyte men who were in the land of Israel, after the enumeration which David his father had enumerated, and they were found to be one hundred fifty-three thousand six hundred.

18 fecitque ex eis septuaginta milia qui umeris onera portarent et octoginta milia qui lapides in montibus caederent tria milia autem et sescentos praepositos operum populi

18 and he made from them seventy thousand who would carry burdens on their shoulders, and eighty thousand who would cut stones in the mountains, and three thousand six hundred overseers of the works of the people.

1 et coepit Salomon aedificare domum Domini in Hierusalem in monte Moria qui demonstratus fuerat David patri eius in loco quem paraverat David in area Ornan Iebusei

1 and Solomon began to build the house of the Lord in Jerusalem on Mount Moriah, which had been shown to David his father, in the place which David had prepared in the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.

2 coepit autem aedificare mense secundo anno quarto regni sui

2 and he began to build in the second month, in the fourth year of his reign

3 et haec sunt fundamenta quae iecit Salomon ut aedificaret domum Dei longitudinis cubitos in mensura prima sexaginta latitudinis cubitos viginti

3 and these are the foundations which Solomon laid to build the house of God: of length, in the first measure, sixty cubits; of width, twenty cubits.

4 porticum vero ante frontem quae tendebatur in longum iuxta mensuram latitudinis domus cubitorum viginti porro altitudo centum viginti cubitorum erat et deauravit eam intrinsecus auro mundissimo

4 but the portico before the front, which was extended in length according to the measure of the breadth of the house, twenty cubits; moreover, the height was one hundred and twenty cubits; and he gilded it on the inside with the most pure gold.

5 domum quoque maiorem texit tabulis ligneis abiegnis et lamminas auri obrizi adfixit per totum scalpsitque in ea palmas et quasi catenulas se invicem conplectentes

5 he also covered the greater house with fir-wood boards, and he affixed plates of obryzum gold throughout, and he carved on it palms and, as it were, little chains interlacing with one another

6 stravit quoque pavimentum templi pretiosissimo marmore decore multo

6 he also paved the floor of the temple with the most precious marble, with much adornment

7 porro aurum erat probatissimum de cuius lamminis texit domum et trabes eius et postes et parietes et ostia et celavit cherubin in parietibus

7 moreover the gold was most refined, from whose plates he overlaid the house and its beams and doorposts and walls and doors, and he engraved cherubim on the walls

8 fecit quoque domum sancti sanctorum longitudinem iuxta latitudinem domus cubitorum viginti et latitudinem similiter viginti cubitorum et lamminis aureis texit eam quasi talentis sescentis

8 he also made the house of the Holy of Holies: the length according to the breadth of the house, twenty cubits, and the breadth likewise twenty cubits; and he covered it with golden laminas, as it were with about six hundred talents

9 sed et clavos fecit aureos ita ut singuli clavi siclos quinquagenos adpenderent cenacula quoque texit auro

9 but he also made golden nails, such that each nail weighed fifty shekels; he also overlaid the upper chambers with gold

10 fecit etiam in domo sancti sanctorum cherubin duo opere statuario et texit eos auro

10 he also made in the house of the holy of holies two cherubim in statuary work, and covered them with gold

11 alae cherubin viginti cubitis extendebantur ita ut una ala haberet cubitos quinque et tangeret parietem domus et altera quinque cubitos habens alam tangeret alterius cherub

11 the wings of the cherubim were extended twenty cubits, such that one wing had five cubits and touched the wall of the house, and the other, having five cubits of wing, touched the other cherub

12 similiter cherub alterius ala quinque habebat cubitos et tangebat parietem et ala eius altera quinque cubitorum alam cherub alterius contingebat

12 similarly the other cherub had a wing of five cubits and it was touching the wall, and its other wing, of five cubits, was touching the wing of the other cherub

13 igitur alae utriusque cherubin expansae erant et extendebantur per cubitos viginti ipsi autem stabant erectis pedibus et facies eorum versae erant ad exteriorem domum

13 therefore the wings of both cherubim were spread and extended across twenty cubits, but they themselves stood with feet erect, and their faces were turned toward the outer house

14 fecit quoque velum ex hyacintho purpura coccino et bysso et intexuit ei cherubin

14 he also made a veil from hyacinth, purple, scarlet, and byssus, and he interwove cherubim on it

15 ante fores etiam templi duas columnas quae triginta et quinque cubitos habebant altitudinis porro capita earum quinque cubitorum

15 before the doors also of the temple, two columns, which had thirty-five cubits of height; moreover their capitals were five cubits.

16 necnon et quasi catenulas in oraculo et superposuit eas capitibus columnarum malagranata etiam centum quae catenulis interposuit

16 and likewise, as it were, chainlets in the Oracle, and he set them upon the heads of the columns; also 100 pomegranates, which he interposed among the chainlets

17 ipsas quoque columnas posuit in vestibulo templi unam a dextris et alteram a sinistris eam quae a dextris erat vocavit Iachin et quae ad levam Booz

17 he also set the columns themselves in the vestibule of the temple, one on the right and the other on the left; the one that was on the right he called Iachin, and the one on the left, Booz

1 fecit quoque altare aeneum viginti cubitorum longitudinis et viginti cubitorum latitudinis et decem cubitorum altitudinis

1 he also made a bronze altar of twenty cubits in length and twenty cubits in breadth and ten cubits in height

2 mare etiam fusile decem cubitis a labio usque ad labium rotundum per circuitum quinque cubitos habebat altitudinis et funiculus triginta cubitorum ambiebat gyrum eius

2 the molten sea also was ten cubits from lip to lip, round all around; it had five cubits of height, and a cord of thirty cubits encircled its circumference

3 similitudo quoque boum erat subter illud et decem cubitis quaedam extrinsecus celaturae quasi duobus versibus alvum maris circuibant boves autem erant fusiles

3 and the likeness also of bulls was beneath it, and, ten to the cubit, certain chased engravings on the outside, as if in two rows, were encircling the belly of the Sea; moreover, the bulls were molten.

4 et ipsum mare super duodecim boves inpositum erat quorum tres respiciebant aquilonem et alii tres occidentem porro tres alii meridiem et tres qui reliqui erant orientem mare habentes superpositum posteriora autem boum erant intrinsecus sub mari

4 and the sea itself was set upon twelve oxen, of which three were facing the north, and another three the west, moreover another three the south, and the three who were left the east, having the sea set upon them; but the hind parts of the oxen were inward, under the sea.

5 porro vastitas eius habebat mensuram palmi et labium illius erat quasi labium calicis vel repandi lilii capiebatque mensurae tria milia metretas

5 moreover its thickness had the measure of a palm, and its lip was like the lip of a chalice or of an outspread lily, and it held, by measure, three thousand metretai.

6 fecit quoque concas decem et posuit quinque a dextris et quinque a sinistris ut lavarent in eis omnia quae in holocaustum oblaturi erant porro in mari sacerdotes lavabantur

6 he also made ten basins and placed five on the right and five on the left, that they might wash in them all the things which they were about to offer in holocaust; moreover, in the sea the priests used to wash themselves

7 fecit autem et candelabra aurea decem secundum speciem qua iussa erant fieri et posuit ea in templo quinque a dextris et quinque a sinistris

7 and he also made ten golden candelabra according to the pattern by which they had been ordered to be made, and he placed them in the temple: five on the right and five on the left

8 necnon et mensas decem posuitque eas in templo quinque a dextris et quinque a sinistris fialas quoque aureas centum

8 and likewise ten tables, and he placed them in the temple, five on the right and five on the left; also one hundred golden phials

9 fecit etiam atrium sacerdotum et basilicam grandem et ostia in basilica quae texit aere

9 he also made the court of the priests and a great basilica, and the doors in the basilica, which he overlaid with bronze

10 porro mare posuit in latere dextro contra orientem ad meridiem

10 moreover he set the sea on the right side, facing the east, toward the south

11 fecit autem Hiram lebetas quoque et creagras et fialas et conplevit omne opus regis in domo Dei

11 however Hiram also made cauldrons and flesh-hooks and phials, and he completed all the work of the king in the house of God

12 hoc est columnas duas et epistylia et capita et quasi quaedam retiacula quae capita tegerent super epistylia

12 that is, the two columns, and the epistyles, and the capitals, and, as it were, certain reticulations which would cover the capitals over the epistyles

13 malagranata quoque quadringenta et retiacula duo ita ut bini ordines malagranatorum singulis retiaculis iungerentur quae protegerent epistylia et capita columnarum

13 also four hundred pomegranates and two networks, such that two rows of pomegranates were joined to each network, which would cover the epistyles and the capitals of the columns

14 bases etiam fecit et concas quas superposuit basibus

14 he also made bases and basins, which he set upon the bases

15 mare unum bovesque duodecim sub mari

15 one sea and twelve oxen beneath the sea

16 et lebetas et creagras et fialas omnia vasa fecit Salomoni Hiram pater eius in domo Domini ex aere mundissimo

16 and the cauldrons and the flesh-hooks and the phials—Hiram, his father, made all the vessels for Solomon in the house of the Lord from the purest bronze

17 in regione Iordanis fudit ea rex in argillosa terra inter Socchoth et Saredatha

17 in the region of the Jordan the king cast them in clayey earth between Socchoth and Saredatha

18 erat autem multitudo vasorum innumerabilis ita ut ignoraretur pondus aeris

18 Now the multitude of the vessels was innumerable, so that the weight of the bronze was not known.

19 fecitque Salomon omnia vasa domus Dei et altare aureum et mensas et super eas panes propositionis

19 and Solomon made all the vessels of the house of God, and the golden altar, and the tables, and upon them the bread of proposition

20 candelabra quoque cum lucernis suis ut lucerent ante oraculum iuxta ritum ex auro purissimo

20 and the candelabra also with their lamps, that they might shine before the oracle, according to the rite, of the purest gold

21 et florentia quaedam et lucernas et forcipes aureos omnia de auro mundissimo facta sunt

21 and certain flower-ornaments and lamps and golden tongs, all were made of the most pure gold

22 thymiamateria quoque et turibula et fialas et mortariola ex auro purissimo et ostia celavit templi interioris id est in sancto sanctorum et ostia templi forinsecus aurea sicque conpletum est omne opus quod fecit Salomon in domo Domini

22 likewise the incense altars and the thuribles and the phials and the small mortars were of the purest gold; and he overlaid the doors of the inner temple—that is, in the Holy of Holies—and the doors of the temple on the outside were golden; and thus all the work was completed which Solomon made in the house of the Lord.

1 Therefore Solomon brought in all that his father David had vowed—the silver and the gold—and he placed all the vessels in the treasuries of the house of God.

2 post quae congregavit maiores natu Israhel et cunctos principes tribuum et capita familiarum de filiis Israhel in Hierusalem ut adducerent arcam foederis Domini de civitate David quae est Sion

2 after which he gathered the elders of Israel and all the princes of the tribes and the heads of the families of the sons of Israel in Jerusalem, to bring up the Ark of the Covenant of the Lord from the City of David, which is Zion

3 venerunt igitur ad regem omnes viri Israhel in die sollemni mensis septimi

3 therefore all the men of Israel came to the king on the solemn day of the seventh month

4 cumque venissent cuncti seniorum Israhel portaverunt Levitae arcam

4 and when all the elders of Israel had come, the Levites carried the ark

5 et intulerunt eam et omnem paraturam tabernaculi porro vasa sanctuarii quae erant in tabernaculo portaverunt sacerdotes cum Levitis

5 and they brought it in, and all the apparatus of the tabernacle; moreover the vessels of the sanctuary which were in the tabernacle the priests carried with the Levites

6 rex autem Salomon et universus coetus Israhel et omnes qui fuerant congregati ante arcam immolabant arietes et boves absque ullo numero tanta enim erat multitudo victimarum

6 but King Solomon and the entire congregation of Israel, and all who had been gathered before the ark, were immolating rams and oxen without any number, for so great was the multitude of the victims

7 et intulerunt sacerdotes arcam foederis Domini in locum suum id est ad oraculum templi in sancta sanctorum subter alas cherubin

7 and the priests brought in the ark of the covenant of the Lord to its place, that is, to the oracle of the temple, into the holy of holies, beneath the wings of the cherubim

8 ita ut cherubin expanderent alas suas super locum in quo posita erat arca et ipsam arcam tegerent cum vectibus eius

8 so that the cherubim expanded their wings over the place where the ark had been set, and covered the ark itself with its poles

9 vectium autem quibus portabatur arca quia paululum longiores erant capita parebant ante oraculum si vero quis paululum fuisset extrinsecus eos videre non poterat fuit itaque arca ibi usque in praesentem diem

9 but as for the poles by which the ark was carried, because they were a little longer, the ends appeared before the oracle; but if someone had been a little outside, he could not see them; thus the ark was there until the present day

10 nihilque erat aliud in arca nisi duae tabulae quas posuerat Moses in Horeb quando legem dedit Dominus filiis Israhel egredientibus ex Aegypto

10 and there was nothing else in the ark except the two tablets which Moses had placed in Horeb, when the Lord gave the law to the sons of Israel as they were going out from Egypt

11 egressis autem sacerdotibus de sanctuario omnes enim sacerdotes qui ibi potuerant inveniri sanctificati sunt nec adhuc illo tempore vices et ministeriorum ordo inter eos divisus erat

11 But when the priests had gone out from the sanctuary—for all the priests who could be found there had been sanctified—and as yet at that time the courses and the order of ministries had not been divided among them.

12 tam Levitae quam cantores id est et qui sub Asaph erant et qui sub Heman et qui sub Idithun filii et fratres eorum vestiti byssinis cymbalis et psalteriis et citharis concrepabant stantes ad orientalem plagam altaris cumque eis sacerdotes centum viginti canentes tubis

12 as well the Levites as the cantors—that is, both those who were under Asaph and those under Heman and those under Idithun, their sons and brothers—vested in byssine, were sounding with cymbals and psalteries and citharas, standing at the eastern quarter of the altar, and with them the priests, one hundred and twenty, blowing trumpets.

13 igitur cunctis pariter et tubis et voce et cymbalis et organis et diversi generis musicorum concinentibus et vocem in sublime tollentibus longe sonitus audiebatur ita ut cum Dominum laudare coepissent et dicere confitemini Domino quoniam bonus quoniam in aeternum misericordia eius impleretur domus Domini nube

13 therefore, with all together both with trumpets and with voice and with cymbals and with organs and instruments of diverse kinds of music sounding in concert and lifting the voice on high, the sound was heard far away, so that when they had begun to praise the Lord and to say, “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his mercy is forever,” the house of the Lord was filled with a cloud

14 nec possent sacerdotes stare et ministrare propter caliginem conpleverat enim gloria Domini domum Dei

14 and the priests were not able to stand and minister because of the cloud; for the glory of the Lord had filled the house of God

1 tunc Salomon ait Dominus pollicitus est ut habitaret in caligine

1 then Solomon said: The Lord has promised to dwell in caliginous gloom

2 ego autem aedificavi domum nomini eius ut habitaret ibi in perpetuum

2 but I have built a house for his Name, that he might dwell there forever

3 et convertit faciem suam et benedixit universae multitudini Israhel nam omnis turba stabat intenta et ait

3 and he turned his face and blessed the whole multitude of Israel, for all the crowd was standing attentive, and he said

4 benedictus Dominus Deus Israhel qui quod locutus est David patri meo opere conplevit dicens

4 Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, who has fulfilled by deed what he spoke to David my father, saying

5 a die qua eduxi populum meum de terra Aegypti non elegi civitatem de cunctis tribubus Israhel ut aedificaretur in ea domus nomini meo neque elegi quemquam alium virum ut esset dux in populo meo Israhel

5 from the day on which I led out my people from the land of Egypt, I did not choose a city out of all the tribes of Israel that a house might be built in it for my name, nor did I choose any other man to be leader over my people Israel

6 sed elegi Hierusalem ut sit nomen meum in ea et elegi David ut constituerem eum super populum meum Israhel

6 but I have chosen Jerusalem, that my name may be in it, and I have chosen David, to appoint him over my people Israel

7 cumque fuisset voluntatis David patris mei ut aedificaret domum nomini Domini Dei Israhel

7 and when it had been the will of David my father to build a house for the name of the Lord God of Israel

8 dixit Dominus ad eum quia haec fuit voluntas tua ut aedificares domum nomini meo bene quidem fecisti habere huiuscemodi voluntatem

8 the Lord said to him, Because this was your will, that you should build a house to my name, you did indeed do well to have a will of this kind.

9 sed non tu aedificabis domum verum filius tuus qui egredietur de lumbis tuis ipse aedificabit domum nomini meo

9 but you shall not build the house; rather, your son who shall go forth from your loins, he shall build the house for my name

10 conplevit ergo Dominus sermonem suum quem locutus fuerat et ego surrexi pro David patre meo et sedi super thronum Israhel sicut locutus est Dominus et aedificavi domum nomini Domini Dei Israhel

10 therefore the Lord completed his word which he had spoken, and I rose up in place of David my father and sat upon the throne of Israel, just as the Lord had spoken, and I built the house for the name of the Lord, the God of Israel

11 et posui in ea arcam in qua est pactum Domini quod pepigit cum filiis Israhel

11 and I placed in it the ark, in which is the pact of the Lord that he struck with the sons of Israel

12 stetit ergo coram altare Domini ex adverso universae multitudinis Israhel et extendit manus suas

12 therefore he stood before the altar of the Lord, opposite the whole multitude of Israel, and stretched out his hands

13 siquidem fecerat Salomon basem aeneam et posuerat eam in medio basilicae habentem quinque cubitos longitudinis et quinque cubitos latitudinis et tres cubitos in altum stetitque super eam et deinceps flexis genibus contra universam multitudinem Israhel et palmis in caelum levatis

13 for Solomon had made a bronze base and had set it in the middle of the basilica, having five cubits in length and five cubits in breadth and three cubits in height; and he stood upon it, and thereupon, with knees bent before all the multitude of Israel and with palms lifted to heaven

14 ait Domine Deus Israhel non est similis tui Deus in caelo et in terra qui custodis pactum et misericordiam cum servis tuis qui ambulant coram te in toto corde suo

14 he said, Lord God of Israel, there is not a God like you in heaven and on earth, you who keep the pact and mercy with your servants who walk before you with their whole heart

15 qui praestitisti servo tuo David patri meo quaecumque locutus fueras ei et quae ore promiseras opere conplesti sicut et praesens tempus probat

15 who have rendered to your servant David my father whatever you had spoken to him, and what you had promised by mouth you have fulfilled in deed, as also the present time proves

16 nunc ergo Domine Deus Israhel imple servo tuo patri meo David quaecumque locutus es dicens non deficiet ex te vir coram me qui sedeat super thronum Israhel ita tamen si custodierint filii tui vias suas et ambulaverint in lege mea sicut et tu ambulasti coram me

16 now therefore, O Lord God of Israel, fulfill for your servant, my father David, whatever you have spoken, saying: there shall not fail from you a man before me to sit upon the throne of Israel, only if your sons keep their ways and walk in my law, just as you have walked before me

17 et nunc Domine Deus Israhel firmetur sermo tuus quem locutus es servo tuo David

17 And now, O Lord God of Israel, let your word be confirmed which you spoke to your servant David.

18 ergone credibile est ut habitet Deus cum hominibus super terram si caelum et caeli caelorum non te capiunt quanto magis domus ista quam aedificavi

18 Is it then credible that God should dwell with men upon the earth? If heaven and the heaven of heavens do not contain you, how much less this house which I have built?

19 sed ad hoc tantum facta est ut respicias orationem servi tui et obsecrationem eius Domine Deus meus audias et preces quas fundit famulus tuus coram te

19 but for this only has it been made: that you may look upon the oration of your servant and his supplication, O Lord my God; hear also the prayers which your servant pours out before you

20 ut aperias oculos tuos super domum istam diebus et noctibus super locum in quo pollicitus es ut invocaretur nomen tuum

20 that you may open your eyes upon this house by day and by night, upon the place in which you have promised that your name would be invoked

21 et exaudires orationem quam servus tuus orat in eo exaudi preces famuli tui et populi tui Israhel quicumque oraverit in loco isto et exaudi de habitaculo tuo id est de caelis et propitiare

21 and that you would hear the prayer which your servant prays in it; hear the prayers of your servant and of your people Israel, whoever shall pray in this place; and hear from your habitation—that is, from the heavens—and be propitious.

22 si peccaverit quispiam in proximum suum et iurare contra eum paratus venerit seque maledicto constrinxerit coram altari in domo ista

22 if anyone has sinned against his neighbor and comes prepared to swear against him, and has bound himself with a malediction before the altar in this house

23 tu audies de caelo et facies iudicium servorum tuorum ita ut reddas iniquo viam suam in caput proprium et ulciscaris iustum retribuens ei secundum iustitiam suam

23 you will hear from heaven and render judgment for your servants, so that you may repay the wicked by bringing his way back upon his own head, and vindicate the just, repaying him according to his righteousness.

24 si superatus fuerit populus tuus Israhel ab inimicis peccabunt enim tibi et conversi egerint paenitentiam et obsecraverint nomen tuum et fuerint deprecati in loco isto

24 if your people Israel shall have been overcome by enemies—for they will have sinned against you—and, having turned back, shall have done penance and have entreated your name and have implored in this place

25 tu exaudi de caelo et propitiare peccato populi tui Israhel et reduc eos in terram quam dedisti eis et patribus eorum

25 you hear from heaven and be propitious to the sin of your people Israel, and lead them back into the land which you gave to them and to their fathers

26 si clauso caelo pluvia non fluxerit propter peccata populi et deprecati te fuerint in loco isto et confessi nomini tuo et conversi a peccatis suis cum eos adflixeris

26 if, with the heaven closed, rain does not flow on account of the sins of the people, and they implore you in this place and confess to your name and turn back from their sins when you afflict them

27 exaudi de caelo Domine et dimitte peccata servis tuis et populi tui Israhel et doce eos viam bonam per quam ingrediantur et da pluviam terrae quam dedisti populo tuo ad possidendum

27 hear from heaven, O Lord, and remit the sins of your servants and of your people Israel, and teach them the good way by which they may enter, and give rain to the land which you have given to your people to possess

28 fames si orta fuerit in terra et pestilentia erugo et aurugo et lucusta et brucus et hostes vastatis regionibus portas obsederint civitatis omnisque plaga et infirmitas presserit

28 if famine has arisen in the land, and pestilence, blight and mildew, and locust and cankerworm, and enemies, the regions having been devastated, have besieged the gates of the city, and every plague and infirmity has pressed,

29 si quis de populo tuo Israhel fuerit deprecatus cognoscens plagam et infirmitatem suam et expanderit manus suas in domo hac

29 if anyone of your people Israel has implored, recognizing the plague and his infirmity, and has spread his hands in this house

30 tu exaudi de caelo de sublimi scilicet habitaculo tuo et propitiare et redde unicuique secundum vias suas quas nosti eum habere in corde suo tu enim solus nosti corda filiorum hominum

30 you, hear from heaven, from your sublime dwelling-place, namely, and be propitious, and render to each according to his ways, which you know him to have in his heart, for you alone know the hearts of the sons of men

31 ut timeant te et ambulent in viis tuis cunctis diebus quibus vivunt super faciem terrae quam dedisti patribus nostris

31 that they may fear you and walk in your ways all the days in which they live upon the face of the earth which you gave to our fathers

32 externum quoque qui non est de populo tuo Israhel si venerit de terra longinqua propter nomen tuum magnum et propter manum tuam robustam et brachium tuum extentum et adoraverit in loco isto

32 also the foreigner who is not of your people Israel, if he comes from a far land on account of your great name and on account of your strong hand and your outstretched arm, and worships in this place

33 tu exaudies de caelo firmissimo habitaculo tuo et facies cuncta pro quibus invocaverit te ille peregrinus ut sciant omnes populi terrae nomen tuum et timeant te sicut populus tuus Israhel et cognoscant quia nomen tuum invocatum est super domum hanc quam aedificavi

33 you will hear from heaven, your most firm dwelling-place, and you will do all for which that pilgrim has invoked you, that all the peoples of the earth may know your name and may fear you as your people Israel do, and may recognize that your name has been invoked upon this house which I have built

34 si egressus fuerit populus tuus ad bellum contra adversarios suos per viam in qua miseris eos adorabunt te contra viam in qua civitas haec est quam elegisti et domus quam aedificavi nomini tuo

34 if your people go out to war against their adversaries by the way in which you send them, they will worship you toward the direction in which this city is, which you have chosen, and the house which I have built for your name

35 ut exaudias de caelo preces eorum et obsecrationem et ulciscaris

35 that you may hear from heaven their prayers and supplication, and avenge

36 si autem et peccaverint tibi neque enim est homo qui non peccet et iratus fueris eis et tradideris hostibus et captivos eos duxerint in terram longinquam vel certe quae iuxta est

36 but if they also sin against you—for there is no man who does not sin—and you are angered with them and have delivered them to enemies, and they lead them captive into a far land, or indeed one which is near

37 et conversi corde suo in terra ad quam captivi ducti fuerant egerint paenitentiam et deprecati te fuerint in terra captivitatis suae dicentes peccavimus inique fecimus iniuste egimus

37 and, turned with their heart in the land to which they had been led away captive, they do penance and have implored you in the land of their captivity, saying, 'We have sinned, we have acted iniquitously, we have acted unjustly'

38 et reversi fuerint ad te in toto corde suo et in tota anima sua in terra captivitatis suae ad quam ducti sunt adorabunt te contra viam terrae suae quam dedisti patribus eorum et urbis quam elegisti et domus quam aedificavi nomini tuo

38 and they shall have returned to you with all their heart and with all their soul in the land of their captivity to which they were led they will worship you toward the direction of their land which you have given to their fathers and of the city which you have chosen and of the house which I have built for your name

39 ut exaudias de caelo hoc est de firmo habitaculo tuo preces eorum et facias iudicium et dimittas populo tuo quamvis peccatori

39 that you may hearken from heaven, that is, from your firm habitation, to their prayers, and render judgment, and forgive your people, although sinful

40 tu es enim Deus meus aperiantur quaeso oculi tui et aures tuae intentae sint ad orationem quae fit in loco isto

40 for you are my God; let your eyes be opened, I pray, and your ears be attentive to the prayer that is made in this place

41 nunc igitur consurge Domine Deus in requiem tuam tu et arca fortitudinis tuae sacerdotes tui Domine Deus induantur salute et sancti tui laetentur in bonis

41 now therefore arise, O Lord God, into your rest, you and the ark of your fortitude; let your priests, O Lord God, be clothed with salvation, and let your saints rejoice in good things

42 Domine Deus ne averseris faciem christi tui memento misericordiarum David servi tui

42 Lord God, do not turn away the face of your Christ; remember the mercies of David, your servant.

1 cumque conplesset Salomon fundens preces ignis descendit de caelo et devoravit holocausta et victimas et maiestas Domini implevit domum

1 and when Solomon had completed, pouring forth prayers, fire descended from heaven and devoured the holocausts and the victims, and the majesty of the Lord filled the house

2 nec poterant sacerdotes ingredi templum Domini eo quod implesset maiestas Domini templum Domini

2 and the priests were not able to enter the temple of the Lord, because the Majesty of the Lord had filled the temple of the Lord

3 sed et omnes filii Israhel videbant descendentem ignem et gloriam Domini super domum et corruentes proni in terram super pavimentum stratum lapide adoraverunt et laudaverunt Dominum quoniam bonus quoniam in aeternum misericordia eius

3 but also all the sons of Israel were seeing the fire descending and the glory of the Lord upon the house, and, falling prone to the ground upon the pavement laid with stone, they adored and praised the Lord, for he is good, for his mercy is eternal.

4 rex autem et omnis populus immolabant victimas coram Domino

4 but the king and all the people were immolating victims before the Lord

5 mactavit igitur rex Salomon hostias boum viginti duo milia arietum centum viginti milia et dedicavit domum Dei rex et universus populus

5 therefore King Solomon sacrificed sacrificial victims: 22,000 oxen and 120,000 rams; and the king and the whole people dedicated the house of God

6 sacerdotes autem stabant in officiis suis et Levitae in organis carminum Domini quae fecit David rex ad laudandum Dominum quoniam in aeternum misericordia eius hymnos David canentes per manus suas porro sacerdotes canebant tubis ante eos cunctusque Israhel stabat

6 but the priests stood in their offices, and the Levites with the instruments of the songs of the Lord—which King David made for praising the Lord, for his mercy is forever—singing the hymns of David by their hands; furthermore the priests were sounding with trumpets before them, and all Israel stood

7 sanctificavit quoque Salomon medium atrii ante templum Domini obtulerat enim ibi holocausta et adipes pacificorum quia altare aeneum quod fecerat non poterat sustinere holocausta et sacrificia et adipes

7 Solomon also sanctified the middle of the court before the temple of the Lord, for there he had offered burnt offerings and the fats of the peace offerings, because the bronze altar that he had made was not able to hold the burnt offerings and the sacrifices and the fats.

8 fecit ergo Salomon sollemnitatem in tempore illo septem diebus et omnis Israhel cum eo ecclesia magna valde ab introitu Emath usque ad torrentem Aegypti

8 therefore Solomon made a solemnity at that time for seven days, and all Israel with him, a very great assembly, from the entrance of Hamath as far as the Brook of Egypt

9 fecitque die octavo collectam eo quod dedicasset altare septem diebus et sollemnitatem celebrasset diebus septem

9 and on the eighth day he held an assembly, because he had dedicated the altar for seven days and had celebrated the solemnity for seven days

10 igitur in die vicesimo tertio mensis septimi dimisit populos ad tabernacula sua laetantes atque gaudentes super bono quod fecerat Dominus David et Salomoni et Israhel populo suo

10 therefore on the twenty-third day of the seventh month he dismissed the people to their tents, rejoicing and glad because of the good that the Lord had done for David and for Solomon and for Israel his people

11 conplevitque Salomon domum Domini et domum regis et omnia quae disposuerat in corde suo ut faceret in domo Domini et in domo sua et prosperatus est

11 and Solomon completed the house of the Lord and the house of the king, and all that he had set in his heart to do in the house of the Lord and in his own house, and he prospered

12 apparuit autem ei Dominus nocte et ait audivi orationem tuam et elegi locum istum mihi in domum sacrificii

12 But the Lord appeared to him by night and said, I have heard your oration, and I have chosen this place for myself as a house of sacrifice.

13 si clausero caelum et pluvia non fluxerit et mandavero et praecepero lucustae ut devoret terram et misero pestilentiam in populum meum

13 If I shut up the heaven and the rain does not fall, and I command and enjoin the locust to devour the land, and I send pestilence among my people

14 conversus autem populus meus super quos invocatum est nomen meum deprecatus me fuerit et exquisierit faciem meam et egerit paenitentiam a viis suis pessimis et ego exaudiam de caelo et propitius ero peccatis eorum et sanabo terram eorum

14 but if my people, upon whom my name has been invoked, shall have turned and shall have entreated me and sought my face and done penance from their most evil ways, then I also will hear from heaven, and I will be propitious concerning their sins, and I will heal their land

15 oculi quoque mei erunt aperti et aures meae erectae ad orationem eius qui in loco isto oraverit

15 my eyes also will be open, and my ears attentive to the prayer of him who shall pray in this place

16 elegi enim et sanctificavi locum istum ut sit nomen meum ibi in sempiternum et permaneant oculi mei et cor meum ibi cunctis diebus

16 for I have chosen and sanctified this place, that my name may be there for ever, and my eyes and my heart may remain there all the days

17 tu quoque si ambulaveris coram me sicut ambulavit David pater tuus et feceris iuxta omnia quae praecepi tibi et iustitias meas iudiciaque servaveris

17 you also, if you shall have walked before me as David your father walked, and shall have done according to all that I have prescribed to you, and shall have kept my justices and judgments

18 suscitabo thronum regni tui sicut pollicitus sum David patri tuo dicens non auferetur de stirpe tua vir qui sit princeps in Israhel

18 I will raise up the throne of your kingdom, as I promised to David your father, saying: a man who shall be prince in Israel shall not be taken away from your lineage

19 si autem aversi fueritis et dereliqueritis iustitias meas et praecepta mea quae proposui vobis et abeuntes servieritis diis alienis et adoraveritis eos

19 but if you shall have turned away and shall have forsaken my statutes and my precepts which I have set before you, and going away you serve alien gods and worship them

20 evellam vos de terra mea quam dedi vobis et domum hanc quam sanctificavi nomini meo proiciam a facie mea et tradam eam in parabolam et in exemplum cunctis populis

20 I will uproot you from my land which I have given to you, and this house which I have sanctified for my name I will cast away from before my face, and I will hand it over as a parable and as an example to all peoples.

21 et domus ista erit in proverbium universis transeuntibus et dicent stupentes quare fecit Dominus sic terrae huic et domui huic

21 and this house shall be for a proverb to all who pass by, and they will say, astonished, why has the Lord done thus to this land and to this house

22 respondebuntque quia dereliquerunt Dominum Deum patrum suorum qui eduxit eos de terra Aegypti et adprehenderunt deos alienos et adoraverunt eos atque coluerunt idcirco venerunt super eos universa haec mala

22 and they will answer: Because they abandoned the Lord, the God of their fathers, who led them out of the land of Egypt, and apprehended alien gods and adored them and served them; therefore all these evils have come upon them

1 expletis autem viginti annis postquam aedificavit Salomon domum Domini et domum suam

1 now, when 20 years were completed after Solomon built the house of the Lord and his own house

2 civitates quas dederat Hiram Salomoni aedificavit et habitare ibi fecit filios Israhel

2 he built the cities which Hiram had given to Solomon, and he made the sons of Israel dwell there

3 abiit quoque in Emath Suba et obtinuit eam

3 He also went into Emath Suba and obtained it.

4 et aedificavit Palmyram in deserto et alias civitates munitissimas aedificavit in Emath

4 and he built Palmyra in the desert and he built other most fortified cities in Emath

5 extruxitque Bethoron superiorem et Bethoron inferiorem civitates muratas habentes portas et vectes et seras

5 and he constructed Upper Beth-horon and Lower Beth-horon, walled cities having gates and bars and bolts

6 Baalath etiam et omnes urbes firmissimas quae fuerunt Salomonis cunctasque urbes quadrigarum et urbes equitum omnia quae voluit Salomon atque disposuit aedificavit in Hierusalem et in Libano et in universa terra potestatis suae

6 Baalath also, and all the very fortified cities that were Solomon’s, and all the chariot cities and the cities of horsemen—everything that Solomon wished and disposed—he built in Jerusalem and in Lebanon and in the whole land of his dominion.

7 omnem populum qui derelictus fuerat de Hettheis et Amorreis et Ferezeis et Eveis et Iebuseis qui non erant de stirpe Israhel

7 all the people who had been left of the Hittites and the Amorites and the Perizzites and the Hivites and the Jebusites, who were not of the stock of Israel

8 de filiis eorum et de posteris quos non interfecerant filii Israhel subiugavit Salomon in tributarios usque in diem hanc

8 of their sons and of the posterity whom the sons of Israel had not slain, Solomon subjugated into tributaries unto this day

9 porro de filiis Israhel non posuit ut servirent operibus regis ipsi enim erant viri bellatores et duces primi et principes quadrigarum et equitum eius

9 furthermore, of the sons of Israel he did not appoint that they should serve in the works of the king; for they were men of war, and the foremost leaders, and princes of his chariots and of his horsemen.

10 omnes autem principes exercitus regis Salomonis fuerunt ducenti quinquaginta qui erudiebant populum

10 Now all the chiefs of the army of King Solomon were 250, who instructed the people.

11 filiam vero Pharaonis transtulit de civitate David in domum quam aedificaverat ei dixit enim non habitabit uxor mea in domo David regis Israhel eo quod sanctificata sit quia ingressa est eam arca Domini

11 but the daughter of Pharaoh he transferred from the City of David into the house which he had built for her for he said my wife will not dwell in the house of David king of Israel because it has been sanctified since the Ark of the Lord has entered it

12 tunc obtulit Salomon holocausta Domino super altare Domini quod extruxerat ante porticum

12 then Solomon offered holocausts to the Lord upon the altar of the Lord which he had erected before the portico

13 ut per singulos dies offerretur in eo iuxta praeceptum Mosi in sabbatis et in kalendis et in festis diebus ter per annum id est in sollemnitate azymorum et in sollemnitate ebdomadarum et in sollemnitate tabernaculorum

13 that day by day there might be offered in it according to the precept of Moses, on the sabbaths and on the calends and on the festal days, three times in the year, that is, in the solemnity of the Azymes, and in the solemnity of Weeks, and in the solemnity of Tabernacles.

14 et constituit iuxta dispositionem David patris sui officia sacerdotum in ministeriis suis et Levitas in ordine suo ut laudarent et ministrarent coram sacerdotibus iuxta ritum uniuscuiusque diei et ianitores in divisionibus suis per portam et portam sic enim praeceperat David homo Dei

14 and he constituted, according to the disposition of David his father, the offices of the priests in their ministries, and the Levites in their order, that they should laud and minister before the priests according to the rite of each day, and the gatekeepers (janitors) in their divisions, gate by gate; for thus David, the man of God, had commanded

15 nec praetergressi sunt de mandatis regis tam sacerdotes quam Levitae ex omnibus quae praeceperat et in custodiis thesaurorum

15 and they did not transgress the mandates of the king, both the priests and the Levites, in any of the things that he had prescribed, and in the custodies of the treasuries

16 omnes inpensas praeparatas habuit Salomon ex eo die quo fundavit domum Domini usque in diem quo perfecit eam

16 Solomon had all the expenses prepared from the day on which he founded the house of the Lord up to the day on which he perfected it

17 tunc abiit Salomon in Hesiongaber et in Ahilath ad oram maris Rubri quae est in terra Edom

17 then Solomon went to Hesiongaber and to Ahilath, to the shore of the Red Sea, which is in the land of Edom

18 misit autem ei Hiram per manum servorum suorum naves et nautas gnaros maris et abierunt cum servis Salomonis in Ophir tuleruntque inde quadringenta quinquaginta talenta auri et adtulerunt ad regem Salomonem

18 But Hiram sent to him, by the hand of his servants, ships and sailors gnarled—skilled—in the sea, and they went with Solomon’s servants to Ophir, and took from there four hundred fifty talents of gold and brought them to King Solomon.

1 regina quoque Saba cum audisset famam Salomonis venit ut temptaret eum enigmatibus in Hierusalem cum magnis opibus et camelis qui portabant aromata et auri plurimum gemmasque pretiosas cumque venisset ad Salomonem locuta est ei quaecumque erant in corde suo

1 the queen of Sheba also, when she had heard the fame of Solomon, came to test him with enigmas in Jerusalem with great opulence and with camels who were bearing aromatics and very much gold and precious gems; and when she had come to Solomon, she spoke to him whatever things were in her heart.

2 et exposuit ei Salomon omnia quae proposuerat nec quicquam fuit quod ei non perspicuum fecerit

2 and Solomon expounded to her all that she had proposed, and there was nothing that he did not make perspicuous to her

3 quod postquam vidit sapientiam scilicet Salomonis et domum quam aedificaverat

3 and when she had seen the wisdom—namely, of Solomon—and the house which he had built

4 necnon cibaria mensae eius et habitacula servorum et officia ministrorum eius et vestimenta eorum pincernas quoque et vestes eorum et victimas quas immolabat in domo Domini non erat prae stupore ultra in ea spiritus

4 and also the provisions of his table, and the habitations of the servants, and the offices of his ministers, and their garments, the cupbearers too and their vestments, and the victims which he was immolating in the house of the Lord, there was no spirit left in her from astonishment

5 dixitque ad regem verus sermo quem audieram in terra mea de virtutibus et sapientia tua

5 and she said to the king: true is the word which I had heard in my land about your virtues and your wisdom

6 non credebam narrantibus donec ipsa venissem et vidissent oculi mei et probassem vix medietatem mihi sapientiae tuae fuisse narratam vicisti famam virtutibus tuis

6 I did not believe those narrating, until I myself had come and my eyes had seen, and I had proved that scarcely half of your wisdom had been narrated to me; you have surpassed the report by your virtues.

7 beati viri tui et beati servi tui hii qui adsistunt coram te in omni tempore et audiunt sapientiam tuam

7 blessed are your men and blessed are your servants, these who stand before you at all times and hear your wisdom

8 sit Dominus Deus tuus benedictus qui voluit te ordinare super thronum suum regem Domini Dei tui quia diligit Deus Israhel et vult servare eum in aeternum idcirco posuit te super eum regem ut facias iudicia atque iustitiam

8 May the Lord your God be blessed, who willed to appoint you upon his throne as king for the Lord your God; because God loves Israel and wills to preserve him forever, therefore he has set you over him as king, that you may do judgments and justice.

9 dedit autem regi centum viginti talenta auri et aromata multa nimis et gemmas pretiosissimas non fuerunt aromata talia ut haec quae dedit regina Saba regi Salomoni

9 and she gave to the king 120 talents of gold, and aromatics (spices), very many indeed, and the most precious gems; there were no aromatics such as these which the queen of Sheba gave to King Solomon

10 sed et servi Hiram cum servis Salomonis adtulerunt aurum de Ophir et ligna thyina et gemmas pretiosissimas

10 but also the servants of Hiram, together with the servants of Solomon, brought gold from Ophir and thyine wood and most precious gems

11 de quibus fecit rex de lignis scilicet thyinis gradus in domo Domini et in domo regia citharas quoque et psalteria cantoribus numquam visa sunt in terra Iuda ligna talia

11 from which the king made, from the wood, namely thyine, steps in the House of the Lord and in the royal house, and also citharas and psalteries for the singers; such wood was never seen in the land of Judah.

12 rex autem Salomon dedit reginae Saba cuncta quae voluit et quae postulavit multo plura quam adtulerat ad eum quae reversa abiit in terram suam cum servis suis

12 but King Solomon gave to the Queen of Sheba all that she wished and what she requested, much more than she had brought to him; and, having returned, she went away to her own land with her servants.

13 erat autem pondus auri quod adferebatur Salomoni per annos singulos sescenta sexaginta sex talenta auri

13 Now the weight of the gold that was brought to Solomon each year was six hundred sixty-six talents of gold.

14 excepta ea summa quam legati diversarum gentium et negotiatores adferre consueverant omnesque reges Arabiae et satrapae terrarum qui conportabant aurum et argentum Salomoni

14 apart from that sum which the envoys of diverse nations and the merchants were accustomed to bring, and all the kings of Arabia and the satraps of the lands, who were carrying gold and silver to Solomon

15 fecit igitur rex Salomon ducentas hastas aureas de summa sescentorum aureorum qui in hastis singulis expendebantur

15 therefore King Solomon made two hundred golden lances, from a sum of six hundred gold pieces which were expended on each lance

16 trecenta quoque scuta aurea trecentorum aureorum quibus tegebantur scuta singula posuitque ea rex in armamentario quod erat consitum nemore

16 also three hundred golden shields of three hundred gold pieces, with which each individual shield was covered, and the king placed them in the armory that was planted with a grove

17 fecit quoque rex solium eburneum grande et vestivit illud auro mundissimo

17 the king also made a great ivory throne and overlaid it with the purest gold

18 sexque gradus quibus ascendebatur ad solium et scabillum aureum et brachiola duo altrinsecus et duos leones stantes iuxta brachiola

18 and six steps by which one ascended to the throne, and a golden footstool, and two armrests on either side, and two lions standing beside the armrests

19 sed et alios duodecim leunculos stantes super sex gradus ex utraque parte non fuit tale solium in universis regnis

19 but also twelve other lion-cubs standing upon the six steps on each side; there was no such throne in all the kingdoms

20 omnia quoque vasa convivii regis erant aurea et vasa domus saltus Libani ex auro purissimo argentum enim in diebus illis pro nihilo reputabatur

20 also all the vessels of the king’s banquet were gold, and the vessels of the House of the Forest of Lebanon were of the purest gold; for silver in those days was reckoned as nothing.

21 siquidem naves regis ibant in Tharsis cum servis Hiram semel in annis tribus et deferebant inde aurum et argentum et ebur et simias et pavos

21 for the king’s ships went to Tarshish with the servants of Hiram once in three years, and they brought back from there gold and silver and ivory and apes and peacocks

22 magnificatus est igitur Salomon super omnes reges terrae divitiis et gloria

22 therefore Solomon was magnified above all the kings of the earth in riches and glory

23 omnesque reges terrarum desiderabant faciem videre Salomonis ut audirent sapientiam quam dederat Deus in corde eius

23 and all the kings of the lands were desiring to behold the face of Solomon, that they might hear the wisdom which God had given in his heart

24 et deferebant ei munera vasa argentea et aurea et vestes et arma et aromata equos et mulos per singulos annos

24 and they brought to him gifts, silver and golden vessels, garments and arms, and aromatics, horses and mules, year by year

25 habuit quoque Salomon quadraginta milia equorum in stabulis et curruum equitumque duodecim milia constituitque eos in urbibus quadrigarum et ubi erat rex in Hierusalem

25 Solomon also had forty thousand horses in the stables for chariots, and twelve thousand horsemen; and he appointed them in the cities of the chariots and with the king in Jerusalem.

26 exercuit etiam potestatem super cunctos reges a fluvio Eufraten usque ad terram Philisthinorum id est usque ad terminos Aegypti

26 he also exercised power over all the kings from the river Euphrates as far as the land of the Philistines, that is, as far as the borders of Egypt

27 tantamque copiam praebuit argenti in Hierusalem quasi lapidum et cedrorum tantam multitudinem velut sycaminorum quae gignuntur in campestribus

27 and he supplied such an abundance of silver in Jerusalem as of stones, and such a multitude of cedars as of sycamores which are produced in the plains

28 adducebantur autem ei equi de Aegypto cunctisque regionibus

28 moreover, horses were being brought to him from Egypt and from all regions

29 reliqua vero operum Salomonis priorum et novissimorum scripta sunt in verbis Nathan prophetae et in libris Ahiae Silonitis in visione quoque Iaddo videntis contra Hieroboam filium Nabath

29 But the rest of the works of Solomon, former and latter, are written in the words of Nathan the prophet, and in the books of Ahijah the Shilonite, and also in the vision of Iddo the seer, against Jeroboam son of Nebat.

30 regnavit autem Salomon in Hierusalem super omnem Israhel quadraginta annis

30 and Solomon reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel for forty years

31 dormivitque cum patribus suis et sepelierunt eum in civitate David regnavitque pro eo Roboam filius eius

31 and he slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the City of David, and Rehoboam his son reigned in his stead

1 But Rehoboam set out to Shechem, for there all Israel had convened to constitute him king.

2 When Jeroboam son of Nebat heard this, who was in Egypt—for he had fled thither from before Solomon—he immediately returned.

3 vocaveruntque eum et venit cum universo Israhel et locuti sunt ad Roboam dicentes

3 And they called him, and he came with all Israel, and they spoke to Rehoboam, saying

4 pater tuus durissimo iugo nos pressit tu leviora impera patre tuo qui nobis gravem inposuit servitutem et paululum de onere subleva ut serviamus tibi

4 your father pressed us with a most hard yoke; you impose lighter things than your father, who imposed on us grievous servitude, and relieve a little of the burden, that we may serve you

5 qui ait post tres dies revertimini ad me cumque abisset populus

5 who said, Return to me after three days; and when the people had departed

6 iniit consilium cum senibus qui steterant coram patre eius Salomone dum adviveret dicens quid datis consilii ut respondeam populo

6 he entered into counsel with the elders who had stood before his father Solomon while he was still alive, saying, What counsel do you give, that I may respond to the people?

7 qui dixerunt ei si placueris populo huic et lenieris eos verbis clementibus servient tibi omni tempore

7 who said to him if you please this people and soften them with clement words they will serve you at all times

8 at ille reliquit consilium senum et cum iuvenibus tractare coepit qui cum eo nutriti fuerant et erant in comitatu illius

8 but he relinquished the counsel of the elders and began to take counsel with the youths who had been brought up with him and were in his retinue

9 dixitque ad eos quid vobis videtur vel respondere quid debeo populo huic qui dixit mihi subleva iugum quod inposuit nobis pater tuus

9 and he said to them, What seems to you, or what ought I to answer to this people who said to me, “Relieve the yoke which your father imposed upon us”?

10 at illi responderunt ut iuvenes et nutriti cum eo in deliciis atque dixerunt sic loqueris populo qui dixit tibi pater tuus adgravavit iugum nostrum tu subleva et sic respondebis eis minimus digitus meus grossior est lumbis patris mei

10 but they answered as young men and reared with him in delights and said thus you shall speak to the people who said to you your father aggravated our yoke you lighten it and thus you shall answer them my little finger is thicker than my father’s loins

11 pater meus inposuit vobis iugum grave et ego maius pondus adponam pater meus cecidit vos flagellis ego vero caedam scorpionibus

11 my father laid upon you a heavy yoke and I will add a greater weight my father struck you with whips but I indeed will strike you with scorpions

12 venit ergo Hieroboam et universus populus ad Roboam die tertio sicut praeceperat eis

12 therefore Jeroboam came, and all the people, to Rehoboam on the third day, as he had commanded them

13 responditque rex dura derelicto consilio seniorum

13 and the king answered harsh things, with the counsel of the elders left behind

14 locutusque est iuxta iuvenum voluntatem pater meus grave vobis inposuit iugum quod ego gravius faciam pater meus cecidit vos flagellis ego vero caedam scorpionibus

14 and he spoke according to the will of the youths: My father imposed a heavy yoke upon you, which I will make heavier; my father chastised you with whips, but I indeed will scourge you with scorpions.

15 et non adquievit populi precibus erat enim voluntatis Dei ut conpleretur sermo eius quem locutus fuerat per manum Ahiae Silonitis ad Hieroboam filium Nabath

15 and he did not acquiesce to the people’s entreaties; for it was the will of God that His word be fulfilled, which He had spoken by the hand of Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam son of Nebat

16 populus autem universus rege duriora dicente sic locutus est ad eum non est nobis pars in David neque hereditas in filio Isai revertere in tabernacula tua Israhel tu autem pasce domum tuam David et abiit Israhel in tabernacula sua

16 but the whole people, while the king was speaking harsher things, thus spoke to him: we have no part in David, nor inheritance in the son of Jesse; return to your tents, Israel; but you, David, tend your own house. And Israel went to his tents.

17 super filios autem Israhel qui habitabant in civitatibus Iuda regnavit Roboam

17 but over the sons of Israel who were dwelling in the cities of Judah Rehoboam reigned

18 misitque rex Roboam Aduram qui praeerat tributis et lapidaverunt eum filii Israhel et mortuus est porro rex Roboam currum festinavit ascendere et fugit in Hierusalem

18 and King Rehoboam sent Aduram, who was over the tribute; and the sons of Israel stoned him, and he died; moreover King Rehoboam hastened to mount the chariot and fled into Jerusalem.

19 recessitque Israhel a domo David usque ad diem hanc

19 and Israel withdrew from the house of David unto this day

1 venit autem Roboam in Hierusalem et convocavit universam domum Iuda et Beniamin in centum octoginta milibus electorum atque bellantium ut dimicaret contra Israhel et converteret ad se regnum suum

1 But Rehoboam came to Jerusalem and summoned the whole house of Judah and Benjamin, one hundred and eighty thousand chosen men and warriors, to fight against Israel and to turn the kingdom back to himself.

2 factusque est sermo Domini ad Semeiam hominem Dei dicens

2 and the word of the Lord came to Shemaiah, the man of God, saying

3 loquere ad Roboam filium Salomonis regem Iuda et ad universum Israhel qui est in Iuda et Beniamin

3 speak to Rehoboam, son of Solomon, king of Judah, and to all Israel who are in Judah and Benjamin

4 haec dicit Dominus non ascendetis neque pugnabitis contra fratres vestros revertatur unusquisque in domum suam quia mea hoc gestum est voluntate qui cum audissent sermonem Domini reversi sunt nec perrexerunt contra Hieroboam

4 Thus says the Lord: you shall not go up nor fight against your brothers; let each return to his house, for this has been done by my will. When they had heard the word of the Lord, they returned and did not proceed against Jeroboam.

5 habitavit autem Roboam in Hierusalem et aedificavit civitates muratas in Iuda

5 But Rehoboam dwelt in Jerusalem and built walled cities in Judah.

9 but also Adoraim and Lachish and Azekah

10 Saraa quoque et Ahilon et Hebron quae erant in Iuda et Beniamin civitates munitissimas

10 Saraa also and Ahilon and Hebron, which were in Judah and Benjamin, most fortified cities

11 cumque clausisset eas muris posuit in eis principes ciborumque horrea hoc est olei et vini

11 and when he had shut them in with walls, he set in them princes and granaries of provisions, that is, of oil and wine

12 sed et in singulis urbibus fecit armamentaria scutorum et hastarum firmavitque eas multa diligentia et imperavit super Iudam et Beniamin

12 but also in each city he made armories for shields and spears, and he strengthened them with much diligence, and he commanded over Judah and Benjamin

13 sacerdotes autem et Levitae qui erant in universo Israhel venerunt ad eum de cunctis sedibus suis

13 however, the priests and the Levites who were in all Israel came to him from all their seats.

14 relinquentes suburbana et possessiones suas et transeuntes ad Iudam et Hierusalem eo quod abiecisset eos Hieroboam et posteri eius ne sacerdotio Domini fungerentur

14 leaving their suburban lands and their possessions and crossing over to Judah and Jerusalem, because Jeroboam and his posterity had cast them off, so that they might not perform the priesthood of the Lord

15 qui constituit sibi sacerdotes excelsorum et daemonum vitulorumque quos fecerat

15 who appointed for himself priests of the high places and of demons and of the calves which he had made

16 sed et de cunctis tribubus Israhel quicumque dederant cor suum ut quaererent Dominum Deum Israhel venerunt Hierusalem ad immolandas victimas Domino Deo patrum suorum

16 but also out of all the tribes of Israel, whoever had given their heart to seek the Lord God of Israel came to Jerusalem to sacrifice victims to the Lord God of their fathers

17 et roboraverunt regnum Iuda et confirmaverunt Roboam filium Salomonis per tres annos ambulaverunt enim in viis David et Salomonis annis tantum tribus

17 and they strengthened the kingdom of Judah and confirmed Rehoboam, the son of Solomon, for three years; for they walked in the ways of David and Solomon only three years

18 duxit autem Roboam uxorem Maalath filiam Hierimuth filii David Abiail quoque filiam Heliab filii Isai

18 And Rehoboam took as wife Maalath, daughter of Jerimoth son of David, and Abihail also, daughter of Eliab son of Jesse.

19 who bore him sons Jeush and Shemariah and Zaham

20 post hanc quoque accepit Maacha filiam Absalom quae peperit ei Abia et Ethai et Ziza et Salumith

20 after this he also took Maacha, daughter of Absalom, who bore him Abia and Ethai and Ziza and Salumith

21 amavit autem Roboam Maacha filiam Absalom super omnes uxores suas et concubinas nam uxores decem et octo duxerat concubinasque sexaginta et genuit viginti octo filios et sexaginta filias

21 But Rehoboam loved Maacah, the daughter of Absalom, above all his wives and concubines; for he had taken 18 wives and 60 concubines, and he begot 28 sons and 60 daughters.

22 constituit vero in capite Abiam filium Maacha ducem super fratres suos ipsum enim regem facere cogitabat

22 but he indeed constituted Abijah, the son of Maacah, at the head as leader over his brothers; for he was intending to make him king.

23 qui sapientior fuit et potentior super omnes filios eius et in cunctis finibus Iuda et Beniamin et in universis civitatibus muratis praebuitque eis escas plurimas et multas petivit uxores

23 who was wiser and more powerful above all his sons, and throughout all the borders of Judah and Benjamin and in all the walled cities he provided them with very many foods, and he sought many wives

1 and when the kingdom of Rehoboam had been strengthened and fortified, he abandoned the law of the Lord, and all Israel with him

2 anno autem quinto regni Roboam ascendit Sesac rex Aegypti in Hierusalem quia peccaverunt Domino

2 but in the fifth year of the reign of Rehoboam Sesac king of Egypt went up against Jerusalem because they had sinned against the Lord

3 cum mille ducentis curribus et sexaginta milibus equitum nec erat numerus vulgi quod venerat cum eo ex Aegypto Lybies scilicet et Trogoditae et Aethiopes

3 with one thousand two hundred chariots and sixty thousand horsemen, and there was no number of the multitude that had come with him from Egypt, namely Libyans and Troglodytes and Ethiopians

4 cepitque civitates munitissimas in Iuda et venit usque Hierusalem

4 and he seized the most fortified cities in Judah and came as far as Jerusalem

5 Semeias autem propheta ingressus est ad Roboam et principes Iuda qui congregati fuerant in Hierusalem fugientes Sesac dixitque ad eos haec dicit Dominus vos reliquistis me et ego reliqui vos in manu Sesac

5 But Shemaiah the prophet entered to Rehoboam and the princes of Judah who had been gathered in Jerusalem, fleeing from Shishak, and he said to them: Thus says the Lord: You have forsaken me, and I also have forsaken you into the hand of Shishak.

6 consternatique principes Israhel et rex dixerunt iustus est Dominus

6 and the princes of Israel and the king, being dismayed, said: the Lord is just.

7 cumque vidisset Dominus quod humiliati essent factus est sermo Domini ad Semeiam dicens quia humiliati sunt non disperdam eos daboque eis pauxillum auxilii et non stillabit furor meus super Hierusalem per manum Sesac

7 and when the Lord saw that they had been humbled, the word of the Lord came to Shemaiah, saying: because they have humbled themselves, I will not destroy them; and I will give them a little help, and my wrath shall not be poured out upon Jerusalem by the hand of Shishak.

8 verumtamen servient ei ut sciant distantiam servitutis meae et servitutis regni terrarum

8 Nevertheless they shall serve him, that they may know the distinction between my servitude and the servitude of the kingdoms of the lands.

9 recessit itaque Sesac rex Aegypti ab Hierusalem sublatis thesauris domus Domini et domus regis omniaque secum tulit et clypeos aureos quos fecerat Salomon

9 therefore Sesac king of Egypt withdrew from Jerusalem, the treasures of the house of the Lord and of the king’s house having been taken away, and he took everything with him, and the golden shields which Solomon had made.

10 pro quibus fecit rex aeneos et tradidit illos principibus scutariorum qui custodiebant vestibulum palatii

10 in place of which the king made bronze ones and handed them over to the chiefs of the shield-bearers who were guarding the vestibule of the palace

11 cumque introiret rex domum Domini veniebant scutarii et tollebant eos iterumque referebant ad armamentarium suum

11 and whenever the king entered the house of the Lord, the shield-bearers would come and take them, and again they would bring them back to their armory.

12 verumtamen quia humiliati sunt aversa est ab eis ira Domini nec deleti sunt penitus siquidem et in Iuda inventa sunt opera bona

12 nevertheless, because they had humbled themselves, the ire of the Lord was averted from them, and they were not utterly obliterated; indeed even in Judah good works were found

13 confortatus est igitur rex Roboam in Hierusalem atque regnavit quadraginta autem et unius anni erat cum regnare coepisset et decem septemque annis regnavit in Hierusalem urbe quam elegit Dominus ut confirmaret nomen suum ibi de cunctis tribubus Israhel nomenque matris eius Naama Ammanitis

13 therefore King Roboam was strengthened in Jerusalem and reigned; now he was 41 years old when he began to reign, and he reigned 17 years in Jerusalem, the city which the Lord chose to confirm his name there out of all the tribes of Israel; and the name of his mother was Naamah the Ammonitess.

14 fecit autem malum et non praeparavit cor suum ut quaereret Dominum

14 But he did evil, and did not prepare his heart to seek the Lord.

15 opera vero Roboam prima et novissima scripta sunt in libris Semeiae prophetae et Addo videntis et diligenter exposita pugnaveruntque adversum se Roboam et Hieroboam cunctis diebus

15 but the works of Rehoboam, the first and the last, are written in the books of Shemaiah the prophet and Iddo the seer, and set forth diligently; and Rehoboam and Jeroboam warred against one another all their days.

16 et dormivit Roboam cum patribus suis sepultusque est in civitate David et regnavit Abia filius eius pro eo

16 and Rehoboam slept with his fathers and was buried in the city of David, and Abijah his son reigned in his stead.

2 he reigned in Jerusalem for three years, and the name of his mother was Michaiah, daughter of Uriel, of Gibeah; and there was war between Abijah and Jeroboam

3 cumque inisset Abia certamen et haberet bellicosissimos viros et electorum quadringenta milia Hieroboam instruxit e contra aciem octingenta milia virorum qui et ipsi electi erant et ad bella fortissimi

3 and when Abia had entered the engagement and had four hundred thousand of the most bellicose chosen men, Hieroboam drew up over against them a battle-line of eight hundred thousand men, who likewise were chosen and most valiant for war

4 stetit igitur Abia super montem Someron qui erat in Ephraim et ait audi Hieroboam et omnis Israhel

4 Abijah therefore stood upon Mount Someron, which was in Ephraim, and said, Hear, Jeroboam, and all Israel

5 num ignoratis quod Dominus Deus Israhel dederit regnum David super Israhel in sempiternum ipsi et filiis eius pactum salis

5 Do you not know that the Lord God of Israel has given the kingdom of David over Israel forever—to him and to his sons—a covenant of salt?

6 et surrexit Hieroboam filius Nabath servus Salomonis filii David et rebellavit contra dominum suum

6 and Hieroboam son of Nabath, a servant of Solomon son of David, rose up and rebelled against his lord

7 congregatique sunt ad eum viri vanissimi et filii Belial et praevaluerunt contra Roboam filium Salomonis porro Roboam erat rudis et corde pavido nec potuit resistere eis

7 and there were congregated to him most vain men and sons of Belial, and they prevailed against Rehoboam, the son of Solomon; moreover Rehoboam was untrained and with a timid heart, nor was he able to resist them

8 nunc ergo vos dicitis quod resistere possitis regno Domini quod possidet per filios David habetisque grandem populi multitudinem atque vitulos aureos quos fecit vobis Hieroboam in deos

8 now therefore you say that you can resist the kingdom of the Lord, which he possesses through the sons of David, and you have a great multitude of the people and the golden calves which Jeroboam made for you into gods

9 et eiecistis sacerdotes Domini filios Aaron atque Levitas et fecistis vobis sacerdotes sicut omnes populi terrarum quicumque venerit et initiaverit manum suam in tauro in bubus et in arietibus septem fit sacerdos eorum qui non sunt dii

9 and you have driven out the priests of the Lord, the sons of Aaron and the Levites, and you have made for yourselves priests like all the peoples of the lands; whoever comes and consecrates his hand with a bull, with cattle, and with seven rams becomes a priest of those who are not gods.

10 noster autem Dominus Deus est quem non relinquimus sacerdotesque ministrant Domino de filiis Aaron et Levitae sunt in ordine suo

10 but our Lord is God, whom we do not relinquish, and the priests minister to the Lord from the sons of Aaron, and the Levites are in their own order

11 holocausta quoque offerunt Domino per singulos dies mane et vespere et thymiama iuxta legis praecepta confectum et proponuntur panes in mensa mundissima estque apud nos candelabrum aureum et lucernae eius ut accendantur semper ad vesperam nos quippe custodimus praecepta Domini Dei nostri quem vos reliquistis

11 and they offer holocausts to the Lord every single day, morning and evening, and incense compounded according to the precepts of the law; and the loaves are set forth on the most clean table; and with us there is a golden candelabrum and its lamps, that they may be lit always at evening; for we indeed keep the precepts of the Lord our God, whom you have forsaken.

12 ergo in exercitu nostro dux Deus est et sacerdotes eius qui clangunt tubis et resonant contra vos filii Israhel nolite pugnare contra Dominum Deum patrum vestrorum quia non vobis expedit

12 therefore in our army the leader is God, and his priests who blare with trumpets and resound against you; sons of Israel, do not fight against the Lord God of your fathers, because it is not expedient for you

13 haec illo loquente Hieroboam retro moliebatur insidias cumque ex adverso hostium staret ignorantem Iudam suo ambiebat exercitu

13 While he was speaking these things, Jeroboam was from behind contriving an ambush; and as he stood opposite the enemies, he was encompassing Judah, unaware, with his own army.

14 respiciensque Iudas vidit instare bellum ex adverso et post tergum et clamavit ad Dominum ac sacerdotes tubis canere coeperunt

14 and, looking back, Judah saw the battle pressing on both in front and behind, and he cried out to the Lord, and the priests began to sound the trumpets

15 omnesque viri Iuda vociferati sunt et ecce illis clamantibus perterruit Deus Hieroboam et omnem Israhel qui stabat ex adverso Abia et Iuda

15 and all the men of Judah vociferated, and behold, as they were crying out, God terrified Jeroboam and all Israel, who stood opposite Abijah and Judah

16 fugeruntque filii Israhel Iudam et tradidit eos Deus in manu eorum

16 and the sons of Israel fled before Judah, and God delivered them into their hand

17 percussit ergo eos Abia et populus eius plaga magna et corruerunt vulnerati ex Israhel quingenta milia virorum fortium

17 therefore Abijah and his people struck them with a great slaughter, and the wounded fell from Israel, five hundred thousand valiant men

18 humiliatique sunt filii Israhel in tempore illo et vehementissime confortati filii Iuda eo quod sperassent in Domino Deo patrum suorum

18 and the children of Israel were humbled at that time, and the children of Judah were strengthened most vehemently, because they had hoped in the Lord God of their fathers

19 persecutus est autem Abia fugientem Hieroboam et cepit civitates eius Bethel et filias eius et Hiesena cum filiabus suis Ephron quoque et filias eius

19 But Abijah pursued the fleeing Jeroboam and captured his cities: Bethel and its daughters, and Jeshanah with its daughters, and likewise Ephron and its daughters.

20 nec valuit ultra resistere Hieroboam in diebus Abia quem percussit Dominus et mortuus est

20 nor was Jeroboam able any longer to resist in the days of Abijah; the Lord struck him, and he died

21 igitur Abia confortato imperio suo accepit uxores quattuordecim procreavitque viginti duos filios et sedecim filias

21 therefore Abijah, his rule strengthened, took fourteen wives and procreated twenty-two sons and sixteen daughters

22 But the rest of the words of Abijah, and his ways and his works, have been written most diligently in the book of the prophet Addo.

1 And Abijah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the city of David; and Asa his son reigned in his stead; in whose days the land was quiet for ten years.

2 fecit autem Asa quod bonum et placitum erat in conspectu Dei sui et subvertit altaria peregrini cultus et excelsa

2 Asa, moreover, did what was good and pleasing in the sight of his God, and he overthrew the altars of foreign cult and the high places.

3 et confregit statuas lucosque succidit

3 and he broke the statues and cut down the groves

4 ac praecepit Iudae ut quaereret Dominum Deum patrum suorum et faceret legem et universa mandata

4 and he commanded Judah to seek the Lord God of their fathers and to do the law and all the commandments

5 et abstulit e cunctis urbibus Iuda aras et fana et regnavit in pace

5 and he removed from all the cities of Judah the altars and the shrines, and he reigned in peace

6 aedificavit quoque urbes munitas in Iuda quia quietus erat et nulla temporibus eius bella surrexerant pacem Domino largiente

6 He also built fortified cities in Judah, because he was at rest, and no wars had arisen in his times, the Lord granting peace.

7 dixit autem Iudae aedificemus civitates istas et vallemus muris et roboremus turribus et portis et seris donec a bellis quieta sunt omnia eo quod quaesierimus Dominum Deum patrum nostrorum et dederit nobis pacem per gyrum aedificaverunt igitur et nullum in extruendo inpedimentum fuit

7 but he said to Judah: Let us build these cities, and let us wall them with walls and strengthen them with towers and gates and bars, until all things are quiet from wars, because we have sought the Lord God of our fathers and he has given us peace all around; therefore they built, and there was no impediment in building.

8 habuit autem Asa in exercitu suo portantium scuta et hastas de Iuda trecenta milia de Beniamin vero scutariorum et sagittariorum ducenta octoginta milia omnes isti viri fortissimi

8 But Asa had in his army, from Judah, of those bearing shields and spears, 300,000; and from Benjamin, of shield-bearers and archers, 280,000; all these were most valiant men.

9 egressus est autem contra eos Zara Aethiops cum exercitu decies centena milia et curribus trecentis et venit usque Maresa

9 But Zerah the Ethiopian went out against them with an army of 1,000,000 and with three hundred chariots, and he came as far as Mareshah.

10 porro Asa perrexit obviam et instruxit aciem ad bellum in valle Sephata quae est iuxta Maresa

10 furthermore Asa went out to meet and arrayed the battle line for war in the valley of Sephata, which is next to Maresa

11 et invocavit Dominum Deum et ait Domine non est apud te ulla distantia utrum in paucis auxilieris an in pluribus adiuva nos Domine Deus noster in te enim et in tuo nomine habentes fiduciam venimus contra hanc multitudinem Domine Deus noster tu es non praevaleat contra te homo

11 and he invoked the Lord God and said: Lord, there is with you no distinction whether you aid the few or the many; help us, O Lord our God, for in you and in your name, having confidence, we have come against this multitude. O Lord our God, you are our God; let not man prevail against you.

12 exterruit itaque Dominus Aethiopas coram Asa et Iuda fugeruntque Aethiopes

12 therefore the Lord terrified the Ethiopians before Asa and Judah, and the Ethiopians fled

13 et persecutus est eos Asa et populus qui cum eo erat usque Gerar et ruerunt Aethiopes usque ad internicionem quia Domino caedente contriti sunt et exercitu illius proeliante tulerunt ergo spolia multa

13 and Asa and the people who were with him pursued them as far as Gerar, and the Ethiopians fell unto extermination, because, with the Lord smiting, they were crushed, and his army fighting; therefore they took much spoil.

14 et percusserunt omnes civitates per circuitum Gerare grandis quippe cunctos terror invaserat et diripuerunt urbes et multam praedam asportaverunt

14 and they struck all the cities around Gerar, for indeed a great terror had invaded all, and they plundered the cities and carried off much spoil

15 sed et caulas ovium destruentes tulerunt pecorum infinitam multitudinem et camelorum reversique sunt Hierusalem

15 but also, destroying the sheepfolds, they carried off an infinite multitude of livestock and of camels, and returned to Jerusalem

1 Azarias autem filius Oded facto in se spiritu Dei

1 But the Spirit of God came upon Azariah, son of Oded

2 egressus est in occursum Asa et dixit ei audite me Asa et omnis Iuda et Beniamin Dominus vobiscum quia fuistis cum eo si quaesieritis eum invenietis si autem dereliqueritis derelinquet vos

2 he went out to meet Asa and said to him, Hear me, Asa, and all Judah and Benjamin: the Lord is with you, because you have been with him; if you seek him, you will find him; but if you forsake him, he will forsake you.

3 transibunt autem multi dies in Israhel absque Deo vero et absque sacerdote doctore et absque lege

3 but many days will pass in Israel without the true God, and without a teaching priest, and without law

4 cumque reversi fuerint in angustia sua ad Dominum Deum Israhel et quaesierint eum repperient

4 and when they will have returned in their distress to the Lord, the God of Israel, and have sought him, they will find

5 in tempore illo non erit pax egredienti et ingredienti sed terrores undique in cunctis habitatoribus terrarum

5 in that time there will not be peace for one going out and for one coming in, but terrors on every side among all the inhabitants of the lands

6 pugnabit enim gens contra gentem et civitas contra civitatem quia Dominus conturbabit eos in omni angustia

6 for nation will fight against nation and city against city, because the Lord will confound them in every distress

7 vos ergo confortamini et non dissolvantur manus vestrae erit enim merces operi vestro

7 therefore you, be strengthened, and let not your hands be dissolved; for there will be a reward for your work

8 quod cum audisset Asa verba scilicet et prophetiam Oded prophetae confortatus est et abstulit idola de omni terra Iuda et Beniamin et ex urbibus quas ceperat montis Ephraim et dedicavit altare Domini quod erat ante porticum Domini

8 when Asa had heard this, namely the words and the prophecy of Oded the prophet, he was fortified and removed the idols from all the land of Judah and Benjamin and from the cities which he had captured in Mount Ephraim, and he dedicated the altar of the Lord which was before the portico of the Lord

9 congregavitque universum Iuda et Beniamin et advenas cum eis de Ephraim et de Manasse et de Symeon plures enim ad eum confugerant ex Israhel videntes quod Dominus Deus illius esset cum eo

9 and he gathered together all Judah and Benjamin, and the sojourners with them from Ephraim and from Manasseh and from Simeon; for many had fled for refuge to him from Israel, seeing that the Lord his God was with him.

10 cumque venissent Hierusalem mense tertio anno quintodecimo regni Asa

10 and when they had come to Jerusalem in the third month, in the 15th year of the reign of Asa

11 immolaverunt Domino in die illa de manubiis et praeda quam adduxerant boves septingentos et arietes septem milia

11 they sacrificed to the Lord on that day, from the spoils and booty which they had brought, seven hundred oxen and seven thousand rams

12 et intravit ex more ad corroborandum foedus ut quaererent Dominum Deum patrum suorum in toto corde et in tota anima sua

12 and entered, according to custom, to strengthen the covenant, that they might seek the Lord, the God of their fathers, with all their heart and with all their soul

13 si quis autem inquit non quaesierit Dominum Deum Israhel moriatur a minimo usque ad maximum a viro usque ad mulierem

13 if anyone, he says, does not seek the Lord God of Israel, let him die, from the least up to the greatest, from man up to woman

14 iuraveruntque Domino voce magna in iubilo et in clangore tubae et in sonitu bucinarum

14 And they swore to the Lord with a great voice, in jubilation, and with the clangor of the trumpet and the sound of the horns.

15 omnes qui erant in Iuda cum execratione in omni enim corde suo iuraverunt et in tota voluntate quaesierunt eum et invenerunt praestititque eis Dominus requiem per circuitum

15 all who were in Judah with execration—for with all their heart they swore, and with their whole will they sought him, and they found him—and the Lord granted them rest all around

16 sed et Maacham matrem Asa regis ex augusto deposuit imperio eo quod fecisset in luco simulacrum Priapi quod omne contrivit et in frusta comminuens conbusit in torrente Cedron

16 but also he deposed Maacah, mother of King Asa, from her august authority, because she had made in the grove an image of Priapus, which he crushed entirely and, breaking it into pieces, burned in the torrent Cedron

17 excelsa autem derelicta sunt in Israhel attamen cor Asa erat perfectum cunctis diebus eius

17 but the high places were left in Israel; nevertheless the heart of Asa was perfect all his days

18 ea quae voverat pater suus et ipse intulit in domum Domini argentum et aurum vasorumque diversam supellectilem

18 the things which his father had vowed he himself brought into the house of the Lord, silver and gold, and diverse furnishings of vessels

19 bellum vero non fuit usque ad tricesimum quintum annum regni Asa

19 but indeed there was no war until the thirty-fifth year of the reign of Asa

1 anno autem tricesimo sexto regni eius ascendit Baasa rex Israhel in Iudam et muro circumdabat Rama ut nullus tute posset egredi et ingredi de regno Asa

1 now in the 36th year of his reign, Baasha king of Israel went up against Judah, and was encircling Ramah with a wall, so that no one could safely go out or come into the kingdom of Asa

2 protulit ergo Asa argentum et aurum de thesauris domus Domini et de thesauris regis misitque ad Benadad regem Syriae qui habitabat in Damasco dicens

2 therefore Asa brought out silver and gold from the treasuries of the house of the Lord and from the treasuries of the king, and sent to Benadad king of Syria, who was dwelling in Damascus, saying

3 foedus inter me et te est pater quoque meus et pater tuus habuere concordiam quam ob rem misi tibi argentum et aurum ut rupto foedere quod habes cum Baasa rege Israhel facias eum a me recedere

3 there is a treaty between me and you; my father also and your father had concord; for which reason I have sent to you silver and gold, so that, the treaty which you have with Baasha king of Israel having been broken, you may make him withdraw from me

4 quo conperto Benadad misit principes exercituum suorum ad urbes Israhel qui percusserunt Ahion et Dan et Abelmaim et universas urbes muratas Nepthalim

4 having learned which, Ben-hadad sent the princes of his armies to the cities of Israel, who struck Ahion and Dan and Abelmaim and all the fortified cities of Naphtali

5 quod cum audisset Baasa desivit aedificare Rama et intermisit opus suum

5 when Baasha heard this, he desisted from building Ramah and intermitted his work

6 porro Asa rex adsumpsit universum Iudam et tulerunt lapides Rama et ligna quae aedificationi praeparaverat Baasa aedificavitque ex eis Gabaa et Maspha

6 moreover Asa the king took all Judah, and they carried away the stones of Ramah and the timber which Baasha had prepared for the building, and he built with them Geba and Mizpah

7 in tempore illo venit Anani propheta ad Asam regem Iuda et dixit ei quia habuisti fiduciam in rege Syriae et non in Domino Deo tuo idcirco evasit Syriae regis exercitus de manu tua

7 at that time the prophet Anani came to Asa king of Judah and said to him: because you had confidence in the king of Syria and not in the Lord your God, therefore the army of the king of Syria has escaped from your hand

8 nonne Aethiopes et Lybies multo plures erant quadrigis et equitibus et multitudine nimia quos cum Domino credidisses tradidit in manu tua

8 were not the Ethiopians and the Libyans much more numerous in chariots and horsemen and in an excessive multitude, whom, when you had trusted in the Lord, he delivered into your hand

9 oculi enim eius contemplantur universam terram et praebent fortitudinem his qui corde perfecto credunt in eum stulte igitur egisti et propter hoc ex praesenti tempore contra te bella consurgent

9 for his eyes contemplate the whole earth and proffer fortitude to those who with a perfect heart believe in him; foolishly therefore you have acted, and because of this from the present time wars will rise up against you

10 iratusque Asa adversus videntem iussit eum mitti in nervum valde quippe super hoc fuerat indignatus et interfecit de populo in tempore illo plurimos

10 And Asa, angered against the seer, ordered him to be put in the stocks—for indeed he had been very indignant over this—and he killed very many of the people at that time.

11 opera autem Asa prima et novissima scripta sunt in libro regum Iuda et Israhel

11 the works of Asa, however, the first and the last, are written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel

12 aegrotavit etiam Asa anno tricesimo nono regni sui dolore pedum vehementissimo et nec in infirmitate sua quaesivit Dominum sed magis in medicorum arte confisus est

12 Asa also fell sick in the 39th year of his reign with a most vehement pain of the feet, and not even in his infirmity did he seek the Lord, but rather he trusted in the art of physicians.

13 dormivitque cum patribus suis et mortuus est anno quadragesimo primo regni sui

13 and he slept with his fathers and died in the 41st year of his reign

14 et sepelierunt eum in sepulchro suo quod foderat sibi in civitate David posueruntque eum super lectulum suum plenum aromatibus et unguentis meretriciis quae erant pigmentariorum arte confecta et conbuserunt super eum ambitione nimia

14 and they buried him in his sepulcher which he had dug for himself in the City of David, and they placed him upon his bier, full of aromatics and meretricious unguents, which had been prepared by the art of the perfumers, and they burned over him with excessive pomp

1 regnavit autem Iosaphat filius eius pro eo et invaluit contra Israhel

1 now Jehoshaphat his son reigned in his stead and grew strong against Israel

2 constituitque militum numeros in cunctis urbibus Iudae quae erant vallatae muris praesidiaque disposuit in terra Iuda et in civitatibus Ephraim quas ceperat Asa pater eius

2 and he established numbers of soldiers in all the cities of judah which were walled with walls, and he posted garrisons in the land of judah and in the cities of ephraim which asa his father had taken

3 et fuit Dominus cum Iosaphat quia ambulavit in viis David patris sui primis et non speravit in Baalim

3 and the Lord was with Jehoshaphat, because he walked in the earlier ways of David his father and did not put his trust in the Baals

4 sed in Deo patris sui et perrexit in praeceptis illius et non iuxta peccata Israhel

4 but he trusted in the God of his father, and he went on in His precepts and not according to the sins of Israel

5 confirmavitque Dominus regnum in manu eius et dedit omnis Iuda munera Iosaphat factaeque sunt ei infinitae divitiae et multa gloria

5 and the Lord confirmed the kingdom in his hand, and all Judah gave gifts to Jehoshaphat, and infinite riches and much glory came to be for him

6 cumque sumpsisset cor eius audaciam propter vias Domini etiam excelsa et lucos de Iuda abstulit

6 and when his heart had taken courage because of the ways of the Lord, he also removed the high places and the sacred groves from Judah

7 tertio autem anno regni sui misit de principibus suis Benail et Obdiam et Zacchariam et Nathanahel et Micheam ut docerent in civitatibus Iuda

7 moreover, in the third year of his reign he sent from among his princes Benail and Obadiah and Zechariah and Nathanael and Micaiah to teach in the cities of Judah

8 et cum eis Levitas Semeiam et Nathaniam et Zabadiam Asahel quoque et Semiramoth et Ionathan Adoniam et Tobiam et Tobadoniam Levitas et cum eis Elisama et Ioram sacerdotes

8 and with them the Levites: Shemaiah and Nethaniah and Zebadiah, Asahel too, and Shemiramoth and Jonathan, Adonijah and Tobiah and Tob-adonijah, Levites; and with them Elishama and Joram, priests.

9 docebantque in Iuda habentes librum legis Domini et circuibant cunctas urbes Iuda atque erudiebant populum

9 and they were teaching in Judah, having the book of the law of the Lord, and they went around all the cities of Judah and were instructing the people

10 itaque factus est pavor Domini super omnia regna terrarum quae erant per gyrum Iuda nec audebant bellare contra Iosaphat

10 and so the terror of the Lord came upon all the kingdoms of the lands that were around Judah, and they did not dare to wage war against Jehoshaphat

11 sed et Philisthei Iosaphat munera deferebant et vectigal argenti Arabes quoque adducebant pecora arietum septem milia septingentos et hircos totidem

11 but even the Philistines were bringing gifts to Jehoshaphat and a tribute of silver; the Arabs also were bringing livestock: 7,700 rams, and he-goats just as many

12 crevit ergo Iosaphat et magnificatus est usque in sublime atque aedificavit in Iuda domos ad instar turrium urbesque muratas

12 Therefore Jehoshaphat grew and was magnified even to the heights, and he built in Judah houses after the likeness of towers, and walled cities.

13 et multa opera patravit in urbibus Iuda viri quoque bellatores et robusti erant in Hierusalem

13 and he accomplished many works in the cities of Judah; and there were also warlike and robust men in Jerusalem

14 quorum iste numerus per domos atque familias singulorum in Iuda principes exercitus Ednas dux et cum eo robustissimorum trecenta milia

14 of whom this is the number, by the houses and families of each: in Judah, the princes of the army—Ednas, the leader, and with him of the most robust 300,000.

15 post hunc Iohanan princeps et cum eo ducenta octoginta milia

15 after him Iohanan, the chief, and with him 280,000

16 post istum quoque Amasias filius Zechri consecratus Domino et cum eo ducenta milia virorum fortium

16 after him also Amaziah, son of Zechri, consecrated to the Lord, and with him two hundred thousand valiant men

17 hunc sequebatur robustus ad proelia Heliada et cum eo tenentium arcum et clypeum ducenta milia

17 after him there followed Heliada, robust for battles, and with him there were two hundred thousand of those bearing bow and shield

18 post istum etiam Iozabath et cum eo centum octoginta milia expeditorum militum

18 after him also Iozabath, and with him one hundred and eighty thousand expeditious soldiers

19 hii omnes erant ad manum regis exceptis aliis quos posuerat in urbibus muratis et in universo Iuda

19 all these were at the king’s hand, except for others whom he had stationed in the walled cities and in all Judah

1 fuit ergo Iosaphat dives et inclitus multum et adfinitate coniunctus est Ahab

1 therefore Jehoshaphat was rich and very illustrious, and by affinity he was joined to Ahab

2 descenditque post annos ad eum in Samariam ad cuius adventum mactavit Ahab arietes et boves plurimos et populo qui venerat cum eo persuasitque illi ut ascenderet in Ramoth Galaad

2 and after some years he went down to him in Samaria; and at his arrival Ahab slaughtered very many rams and oxen, and for the people who had come with him, and he persuaded him to go up to Ramoth-gilead

3 dixitque Ahab rex Israhel ad Iosaphat regem Iuda veni mecum in Ramoth Galaad cui ille respondit ut ego et tu sicut populus tuus sic et populus meus tecumque erimus in bello

3 And Ahab, king of Israel, said to Jehoshaphat, king of Judah: Come with me to Ramoth-gilead. And he replied: I am as you are, and my people as your people; and we will be with you in the war.

4 dixitque Iosaphat ad regem Israhel consule obsecro inpraesentiarum sermonem Domini

4 And Jehoshaphat said to the king of Israel, “Consult, I beseech, at present, the word of the Lord.”

5 congregavitque rex Israhel prophetarum quadringentos viros et dixit ad eos in Ramoth Galaad ad bellandum ire debemus an quiescere at illi ascende inquiunt et tradet Deus in manu regis

5 and the king of Israel gathered four hundred prophets and said to them: should we go to Ramoth-gilead to wage war, or be at rest? but they say: go up, and God will deliver it into the hand of the king.

6 dixitque Iosaphat numquid non est hic prophetes Domini ut ab illo etiam requiramus

6 and Jehoshaphat said, Is there not here a prophet of the Lord, that we may also inquire of him?

7 et ait rex Israhel ad Iosaphat est vir unus a quo possumus quaerere Domini voluntatem sed ego odi eum quia non prophetat mihi bonum sed malum omni tempore est autem Micheas filius Iembla dixitque Iosaphat ne loquaris rex hoc modo

7 and the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, There is one man by whom we can inquire of the will of the Lord; but I hate him, because he does not prophesy good for me, but evil at all times; and he is Micaiah son of Imlah. And Jehoshaphat said, Do not speak in this way, O king.

8 vocavit ergo rex Israhel unum de eunuchis et dixit ei voca cito Micheam filium Iembla

8 Therefore the king of Israel called one of the eunuchs and said to him to call quickly Micaiah, son of Imlah.

9 porro rex Israhel et Iosaphat rex Iuda uterque sedebant in solio suo vestiti cultu regio sedebant autem in area iuxta portam Samariae omnesque prophetae vaticinabantur coram eis

9 furthermore the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat, the king of Judah, each was sitting on his throne, clothed in royal attire; moreover they were sitting in the threshing-floor near the gate of Samaria, and all the prophets were prophesying before them

10 Sedecias vero filius Chanana fecit sibi cornua ferrea et ait haec dicit Dominus his ventilabis Syriam donec conteras eam

10 But Zedekiah, son of Chenaanah, made for himself iron horns and said, Thus says the Lord: With these you will winnow Syria until you crush it.

11 omnesque prophetae similiter prophetabant atque dicebant ascende in Ramoth Galaad et prosperaberis et tradet eos Dominus in manu regis

11 and all the prophets likewise were prophesying and saying, Go up to Ramoth Gilead, and you will prosper, and the Lord will deliver them into the hand of the king.

12 nuntius autem qui ierat ad vocandum Micheam ait illi en verba omnium prophetarum uno ore bona regi adnuntiant quaeso ergo te ut et sermo tuus ab eis non dissentiat loquarisque prospera

12 but the messenger who had gone to summon Micaiah said to him, Behold, the words of all the prophets announce good to the king with one mouth; therefore I beg you, that your word not dissent from theirs, and that you speak things prosperous.

13 cui respondit Micheas vivit Dominus quia quodcumque dixerit Deus meus hoc loquar

13 to whom Micaiah answered, The Lord lives, for whatever my God says, this I will speak

14 venit ergo ad regem cui rex ait Michea ire debemus in Ramoth Galaad ad bellandum an quiescere cui ille respondit ascendite cuncta enim prospera evenient et tradentur hostes in manus vestras

14 so he came to the king, and the king said to him Micaiah should we go to Ramoth‑Gilead to wage war or should we be quiet to which he replied go up for all things prosperous will come to pass and the enemies will be delivered into your hands

15 dixitque rex iterum atque iterum te adiuro ut non mihi loquaris nisi quod verum est in nomine Domini

15 And the king said, again and again I adjure you, that you speak to me nothing except what is true in the name of the Lord.

16 at ille ait vidi universum Israhel dispersum in montibus sicut oves absque pastore et dixit Dominus non habent isti dominos revertatur unusquisque ad domum suam in pace

16 but he said, I saw the whole Israel dispersed on the mountains like sheep without a shepherd; and the Lord said, These have no masters; let each one return to his own house in peace.

17 et ait rex Israhel ad Iosaphat nonne dixi tibi quod non prophetaret iste mihi quicquam boni sed ea quae mala sunt

17 And the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, Did I not tell you that this man would not prophesy anything good for me, but the things which are evil?

18 at ille idcirco ait audite verbum Domini vidi Dominum sedentem in solio suo et omnem exercitum caeli adsistentem ei a dextris et sinistris

18 but he therefore said: Hear the word of the Lord: I saw the Lord sitting on his throne, and all the host of heaven standing by him on his right and on his left.

19 et dixit Dominus quis decipiet Ahab regem Israhel ut ascendat et corruat in Ramoth Galaad cumque diceret unus hoc modo et alter alio

19 and the Lord said, Who will deceive Ahab, king of Israel, that he may go up and fall at Ramoth-gilead? and as one said in this way and another in another way

20 processit spiritus et stetit coram Domino et ait ego decipiam eum cui Dominus in quo inquit decipies

20 a spirit came forth and stood before the Lord and said, I will deceive him; and the Lord said to him, By what means will you deceive?

21 at ille respondit egrediar et ero spiritus mendax in ore omnium prophetarum eius dixitque Dominus decipies et praevalebis egredere et fac ita

21 but he replied i will go out and i will be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets and the Lord said you will deceive and you will prevail go out and do thus

22 nunc igitur ecce dedit Dominus spiritum mendacii in ore omnium prophetarum tuorum et Dominus locutus est de te mala

22 Now therefore, behold, the Lord has given a spirit of mendacity in the mouth of all your prophets, and the Lord has spoken evil concerning you

23 accessit autem Sedecias filius Chanana et percussit Micheae maxillam et ait per quam viam transivit spiritus Domini a me ut loqueretur tibi

23 But Zedekiah son of Chenaanah approached and struck Micaiah on the cheek and said, By what way did the Spirit of the Lord pass from me to speak to you?

24 dixitque Micheas tu ipse videbis in die illo quando ingressus fueris cubiculum de cubiculo ut abscondaris

24 And Micaiah said, You yourself will see on that day when you enter from chamber to chamber to hide yourself.

25 praecepit autem rex Israhel dicens tollite Micheam et ducite eum ad Amon principem civitatis et ad Ioas filium Ammelech

25 But the king of Israel commanded, saying: take Micaiah and lead him to Amon, the governor of the city, and to Joash, the king’s son.

26 et dicetis haec dicit rex mittite hunc in carcerem et date ei panis modicum et aquae pauxillum donec revertar in pace

26 and you shall say, Thus says the king: send this man into prison, and give to him a small ration of bread and a very little of water, until I return in peace.

27 dixitque Micheas si reversus fueris in pace non est locutus Dominus in me et ait audite populi omnes

27 And Micaiah said, If you return in peace, the Lord has not spoken through me; and he said, Hear, all peoples!

28 igitur ascenderunt rex Israhel et Iosaphat rex Iuda in Ramoth Galaad

28 Therefore the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat the king of Judah went up to Ramoth-gilead.

29 dixitque rex Israhel ad Iosaphat mutabo habitum et sic ad pugnandum vadam tu autem induere vestibus tuis mutatoque rex Israhel habitu venit ad bellum

29 and the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat: I will change my garb, and thus I will go to fight; but you, put on your own garments. And the king of Israel, his garb changed, came to the battle.

30 rex autem Syriae praeceperat ducibus equitatus sui dicens ne pugnetis contra minimum aut contra maximum nisi contra solum regem Israhel

30 but the king of Syria had commanded the captains of his cavalry, saying: do not fight against the least or against the greatest, unless only against the king of Israel.

31 itaque cum vidissent principes equitatus Iosaphat dixerunt rex Israhel iste est et circumdederunt eum dimicantes at ille clamavit ad Dominum et auxiliatus est ei atque avertit eos ab illo

31 therefore when the captains of the cavalry saw Jehoshaphat, they said, this is the king of Israel; and they surrounded him, fighting. But he cried to the Lord, and He aided him, and turned them away from him.

32 cum enim vidissent duces equitatus quod non esset rex Israhel reliquerunt eum

32 for when the leaders of the cavalry saw that he was not the king of Israel, they left him

33 accidit autem ut unus e populo sagittam in incertum iaceret et percuteret regem Israhel inter cervicem et scapulas at ille aurigae suo ait converte manum tuam et educ me de acie quia vulneratus sum

33 but it happened that one from the people shot an arrow at random and struck the king of Israel between the neck and the shoulder-blades; and he said to his charioteer, turn your hand and lead me out of the battle-line, for I am wounded.

34 et finita est pugna in die illo porro rex Israhel stabat in curru suo contra Syros usque ad vesperam et mortuus est occidente sole

34 And the battle was finished on that day; moreover the king of Israel stood in his chariot against the Syrians until evening, and he died as the sun was setting.

1 reversus est autem Iosaphat rex Iuda domum suam pacifice in Hierusalem

1 And Jehoshaphat, king of Judah, returned to his house in peace to Jerusalem

2 cui occurrit Hieu filius Anani videns et ait ad eum impio praebes auxilium et his qui oderunt Dominum amicitia iungeris et idcirco iram quidem Domini merebaris

2 and Jehu the son of Hanani, the seer, met him and said to him: Do you give help to the impious, and do you join in friendship with those who hate the Lord? And for this reason, indeed, you incur the Lord’s wrath.

3 sed bona opera inventa sunt in te eo quod abstuleris lucos de terra Iuda et praeparaveris cor tuum ut requireres Dominum

3 but good works were found in you, in that you removed the groves from the land of Judah and prepared your heart to seek the Lord

4 habitavit ergo Iosaphat in Hierusalem rursumque egressus est ad populum de Bersabee usque ad montem Ephraim et revocavit eos ad Dominum Deum patrum suorum

4 therefore Jehoshaphat dwelt in Jerusalem, and again he went out to the people from Beersheba as far as Mount Ephraim, and he recalled them to the Lord God of their fathers

5 constituitque iudices terrae in cunctis civitatibus Iuda munitis per singula loca

5 and he appointed judges of the land in all the fortified cities of Judah, place by place

6 et praecipiens iudicibus videte ait quid faciatis non enim hominis exercetis iudicium sed Domini et quodcumque iudicaveritis in vos redundabit

6 and, instructing the judges, he said: See what you do; for you are not exercising the judgment of a man but of the Lord, and whatever you judge will redound upon yourselves

7 sit timor Domini vobiscum et cum diligentia cuncta facite non est enim apud Dominum Deum nostrum iniquitas nec personarum acceptio nec cupido munerum

7 let the fear of the Lord be with you, and do all things with diligence; for with the Lord our God there is no iniquity, nor acceptance of persons, nor desire for gifts

8 in Hierusalem quoque constituit Iosaphat Levitas et sacerdotes et principes familiarum ex Israhel ut iudicium et causam Domini iudicarent habitatoribus eius

8 In Jerusalem also Jehoshaphat appointed Levites and priests and chiefs of families from Israel, that they might judge the judgment and the cause of the Lord for its inhabitants.

9 praecepitque eis dicens sic agetis in timore Dei fideliter et corde perfecto

9 and he commanded them, saying: thus you shall act in the fear of God, faithfully and with a perfect heart

10 omnem causam quae venerit ad vos fratrum vestrorum qui habitant in urbibus suis inter cognationem et cognationem ubicumque quaestio est de lege de mandato de caerimoniis de iustificationibus ostendite eis ut non peccent in Dominum et ne veniat ira super vos et super fratres vestros sic ergo agetis et non peccabitis

10 every cause that shall come to you from your brothers who dwell in their cities, between kindred and kindred, wherever there is a question concerning the law, the mandate, the ceremonies, the justifications—show it to them, so that they may not sin against the Lord, and lest wrath come upon you and upon your brothers; thus therefore you shall act, and you will not sin.

11 Amarias autem sacerdos et pontifex vester in his quae ad Dominum pertinent praesidebit porro Zabadias filius Ismahel qui est dux in domo Iuda super ea opera erit quae ad regis officium pertinent habetisque magistros Levitas coram vobis confortamini et agite diligenter et erit Dominus cum bonis

11 Amariah, moreover, the priest and your pontiff, will preside in the matters that pertain to the Lord; but Zebadiah, son of Ishmael, who is leader in the house of Judah, will be over the works that pertain to the king’s office; and you have as masters the Levites before you. Be strengthened and act diligently, and the Lord will be with the good.

1 post haec congregati sunt filii Moab et filii Ammon et cum eis de Ammanitis ad Iosaphat ut pugnarent contra eum

1 after these things the sons of Moab and the sons of Ammon were gathered, and with them of the Ammonites, against Jehoshaphat, to fight against him

2 veneruntque nuntii et indicaverunt Iosaphat dicentes venit contra te multitudo magna de his locis quae trans mare sunt et de Syria et ecce consistunt in Asasonthamar quae est Engaddi

2 and messengers came and reported to Jehoshaphat, saying: a great multitude has come against you from those places which are beyond the sea, and from Syria; and behold, they are standing in Hazazon-tamar, which is En-gedi.

3 Iosaphat autem timore perterritus totum se contulit ad rogandum Dominum et praedicavit ieiunium universo Iuda

3 But Josaphat, terrified with fear, devoted himself wholly to beseeching the Lord, and proclaimed a fast for all Judah.

4 congregatusque Iudas ad precandum Dominum sed et omnes de urbibus suis venerunt ad obsecrandum eum

4 and Judah was congregated to pray to the Lord; but also all from their cities came to beseech him

5 cumque stetisset Iosaphat in medio coetu Iudae et Hierusalem in domo Domini ante atrium novum

5 And when Jehoshaphat had stood in the midst of the assembly of Judah and Jerusalem, in the house of the Lord, before the new court,

6 ait Domine Deus patrum nostrorum tu es Deus in caelo et dominaris cunctis regnis gentium in manu tua est fortitudo et potentia nec quisquam tibi potest resistere

6 he said: O Lord, God of our fathers, you are God in heaven, and you rule over all the kingdoms of the nations; in your hand are strength and power, and no one can resist you.

7 nonne tu Deus noster interfecisti omnes habitatores terrae huius coram populo tuo Israhel et dedisti eam semini Abraham amici tui in sempiternum

7 Is it not you, our God, who destroyed all the inhabitants of this land before your people Israel, and gave it to the seed of Abraham, your friend, forever?

8 habitaveruntque in ea et extruxerunt in illa sanctuarium nomini tuo dicentes

8 and they inhabited it, and constructed in it a sanctuary to your name, saying

9 si inruerint super nos mala gladius iudicii pestilentia et fames stabimus coram domo hac in conspectu tuo in qua invocatum est nomen tuum et clamabimus ad te in tribulationibus nostris et exaudies salvosque facies

9 if evils—the sword of judgment, pestilence, and famine—should rush upon us, we will stand before this house in your sight, in which your name has been invoked, and we will cry out to you in our tribulations, and you will hear and save.

10 nunc igitur ecce filii Ammon et Moab et mons Seir per quos non concessisti Israheli ut transirent quando egrediebantur de Aegypto sed declinaverunt ab eis et non interfecerunt illos

10 now therefore behold the sons of Ammon and Moab and Mount Seir, through whom you did not concede to Israel to pass when they were going out of Egypt, but they turned aside from them and did not kill them

11 e contrario agunt et nituntur eicere nos de possessione quam tradidisti nobis

11 they act on the contrary and strive to eject us from the possession which you have delivered to us

12 Deus noster ergo non iudicabis eos in nobis quidem non tanta est fortitudo ut possimus huic multitudini resistere quae inruit super nos sed cum ignoremus quid agere debeamus hoc solum habemus residui ut oculos nostros dirigamus ad te

12 Our God, therefore, will you not judge them? In us indeed there is not so great fortitude that we can resist this multitude which rushes upon us; but since we are ignorant what we ought to do, this alone we have remaining: that we direct our eyes to you.

13 omnis vero Iuda stabat coram Domino cum parvulis et uxoribus et liberis suis

13 But all Judah stood before the Lord with their little ones and their wives and their children.

14 erat autem Hiazihel filius Zacchariae filii Banaiae filii Hiehihel filii Mathaniae Levites de filiis Asaph super quem factus est spiritus Domini in medio turbae

14 Now Jahaziel, son of Zechariah, son of Benaiah, son of Jehiel, son of Mattaniah, a Levite of the sons of Asaph; upon whom the Spirit of the Lord came in the midst of the assembly.

15 et ait adtendite omnis Iuda et qui habitatis Hierusalem et tu rex Iosaphat haec dicit Dominus vobis nolite timere nec paveatis hanc multitudinem non est enim vestra pugna sed Dei

15 and he said, Attend, all Judah, and you who dwell in Jerusalem, and you, King Jehoshaphat: thus says the Lord to you, do not fear nor be dismayed at this multitude; for the battle is not yours but God's.

16 cras descendetis contra eos ascensuri enim sunt per clivum nomine Sis et invenietis illos in summitate torrentis qui est contra solitudinem Hieruhel

16 tomorrow you will go down against them; for they will be going up by the slope named Sis, and you will find them at the top of the torrent-bed which is opposite the wilderness of Hieruhel

17 non eritis vos qui dimicabitis sed tantummodo confidenter state et videbitis auxilium Domini super vos o Iuda et Hierusalem nolite timere nec paveatis cras egredimini contra eos et Dominus erit vobiscum

17 it will not be you who will fight but only stand confidently and you will see the aid of the Lord upon you O Judah and Jerusalem do not fear nor be terrified tomorrow go out against them and the Lord will be with you

18 Iosaphat ergo et Iuda et omnes habitatores Hierusalem ceciderunt proni in terram coram Domino et adoraverunt eum

18 Jehoshaphat therefore and Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem fell prone to the ground before the Lord and worshiped him

19 porro Levitae de filiis Caath et de filiis Core laudabant Dominum Deum Israhel voce magna in excelsum

19 moreover the Levites, of the sons of Kohath and of the sons of Korah, were praising the Lord God of Israel with a great voice on high

20 cumque mane surrexissent egressi sunt per desertum Thecuae profectisque eis stans Iosaphat in medio eorum dixit audite me Iuda et omnes habitatores Hierusalem credite in Domino Deo vestro et securi eritis credite prophetis eius et cuncta evenient prospera

20 and when they rose in the morning they went out through the desert of Tekoa and as they set out Jehoshaphat standing in their midst said listen to me Judah and all inhabitants of Jerusalem believe in the Lord your God and you will be secure believe his prophets and all things will turn out prosperous

21 deditque consilium populo et statuit cantores Domini ut laudarent eum in turmis suis et antecederent exercitum ac voce consona dicerent confitemini Domino quoniam in aeternum misericordia eius

21 and he gave counsel to the people and appointed the cantors of the Lord to laud him in their companies, and to precede the army, and with concordant voice to say, Give thanks to the Lord, for his mercy is forever.

22 cumque coepissent laudes canere vertit Dominus insidias eorum in semet ipsos filiorum scilicet Ammon et Moab et montis Seir qui egressi fuerant ut pugnarent contra Iudam et percussi sunt

22 and when they began to sing praises, the Lord turned their ambushes against themselves—namely, those of the sons of Ammon and Moab and of Mount Seir—who had gone out to fight against Judah, and they were struck down.

23 namque filii Ammon et Moab consurrexerunt adversum habitatores montis Seir ut interficerent et delerent eos cumque hoc opere perpetrassent etiam in semet ipsos versi mutuis concidere vulneribus

23 for the sons of Ammon and Moab rose up against the inhabitants of Mount Seir to kill and obliterate them; and when they had perpetrated this work, they even turned against one another, falling by mutual wounds

24 porro Iudas cum venisset ad speculam quae respicit solitudinem vidit procul omnem late regionem plenam cadaveribus nec superesse quemquam qui necem potuisset evadere

24 then Judah, when it had come to the watchtower which looks toward the wilderness, saw from afar the whole region, far and wide, full of cadavers, and that there remained no one who could have evaded death

25 venit ergo Iosaphat et omnis populus cum eo ad detrahenda spolia mortuorum inveneruntque inter cadavera variam supellectilem vestes quoque et vasa pretiosissima et diripuerunt ita ut omnia portare non possent nec per tres dies spolia auferre pro praedae magnitudine

25 therefore Jehoshaphat came, and all the people with him, to strip the spoils of the dead; and they found among the corpses various furnishings, and also garments and most precious vessels, and they plundered, such that they were not able to carry everything, nor in three days to remove the spoils, on account of the greatness of the booty

26 die autem quarto congregati sunt in valle Benedictionis etenim quoniam ibi benedixerant Domino vocaverunt locum illum vallis Benedictionis usque in praesentem diem

26 but on the fourth day they were gathered in the Valley of Benediction; for indeed, since there they had blessed the Lord, they called that place the Valley of Benediction unto the present day

27 reversusque est omnis vir Iuda et habitatores Hierusalem et Iosaphat ante eos in Hierusalem cum laetitia magna eo quod dedisset eis Dominus gaudium de inimicis suis

27 and every man of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem returned, and Jehoshaphat before them, to Jerusalem with great joy, because the Lord had given them joy over their enemies

28 ingressique sunt Hierusalem cum psalteriis et citharis et tubis in domum Domini

28 and they entered Jerusalem with psalteries and citharas and trumpets into the house of the Lord

29 inruit autem pavor Domini super universa regna terrarum cum audissent quod pugnasset Dominus contra inimicos Israhel

29 But the dread of the Lord fell upon all the kingdoms of the earth when they heard that the Lord had fought against the enemies of Israel

30 quievitque regnum Iosaphat et praebuit ei Deus pacem per circuitum

30 and the kingdom of Jehoshaphat was quiet, and God granted him peace round about

31 regnavit igitur Iosaphat super Iudam et erat triginta quinque annorum cum regnare coepisset viginti autem et quinque annis regnavit in Hierusalem nomen matris eius Azuba filia Selachi

31 Jehoshaphat therefore reigned over Judah, and he was thirty-five years old when he began to reign; and he reigned twenty-five years in Jerusalem; the name of his mother was Azubah, daughter of Shilhi.

32 et ambulavit in via patris sui Asa nec declinavit ab ea faciens quae placita erant coram Domino

32 and he walked in the way of his father Asa and did not turn aside from it, doing the things that were pleasing before the Lord

33 verumtamen excelsa non abstulit et adhuc populus non direxerat cor suum ad Dominum Deum patrum suorum

33 nevertheless he did not remove the high places, and the people had not yet directed their heart toward the Lord God of their fathers

34 reliqua autem gestorum Iosaphat priorum et novissimorum scripta sunt in verbis Hieu filii Anani quae digessit in libro regum Israhel

34 but the rest of the deeds of Jehoshaphat, former and latter, are written in the words of Jehu son of Hanani, which he set in order in the book of the kings of Israel.

35 post haec iniit amicitias Iosaphat rex Iuda cum Ochozia rege Israhel cuius opera fuerunt impiissima

35 after these things Jehoshaphat, king of Judah, entered into friendship with Ahaziah, king of Israel, whose works were most impious

36 et particeps fuit ut facerent naves quae irent in Tharsis feceruntque classem in Asiongaber

36 and he was a partner that they might make ships which would go to Tarshish, and they made a fleet at Ezion-geber

37 prophetavit autem Eliezer filius Dodoau de Maresa ad Iosaphat dicens quia habuisti foedus cum Ochozia percussit Dominus opera tua contritaeque sunt naves nec potuerunt ire in Tharsis

37 but Eliezer, the son of Dodoau, from Mareshah, prophesied to Jehoshaphat, saying: because you had a covenant with Ahaziah, the Lord struck your works, and the ships were shattered, and they were not able to go to Tarshish.

1 dormivit autem Iosaphat cum patribus suis et sepultus est cum eis in civitate David regnavitque Ioram filius eius pro eo

1 And Jehoshaphat slept with his fathers and was buried with them in the City of David, and Joram his son reigned in his place.

2 qui habuit fratres filios Iosaphat Azariam et Hiahihel et Zacchariam et Azariam et Michahel et Saphatiam omnes hii filii Iosaphat regis Israhel

2 who had brothers, the sons of Jehoshaphat: Azariah and Jahiel and Zechariah and Azariah and Michael and Shephatiah; all these were sons of Jehoshaphat, king of Israel

3 deditque eis pater suus multa munera argenti et auri et pensitationes cum civitatibus munitissimis in Iuda regnum autem tradidit Ioram eo quod esset primogenitus

3 and their father gave them many gifts of silver and gold and pensions, along with the most fortified cities in Judah; but the kingdom he handed over to Jehoram, because he was the firstborn.

4 surrexit ergo Ioram super regnum patris sui cumque se confirmasset occidit omnes fratres suos gladio et quosdam de principibus Israhel

4 therefore Joram rose up over the kingdom of his father; and when he had made himself secure, he killed all his brothers with the sword, and some of the princes of Israel

5 triginta duo annorum erat Ioram cum regnare coepisset et octo annis regnavit in Hierusalem

5 Joram was 32 years old when he began to reign, and he reigned 8 years in Jerusalem

6 ambulavitque in viis regum Israhel sicut egerat domus Ahab filia quippe Ahab erat uxor eius et fecit malum in conspectu Domini

6 and he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel, just as the house of Ahab had done, for the daughter of Ahab was his wife, and he did evil in the sight of the Lord

7 noluit autem Dominus disperdere domum David propter pactum quod inierat cum eo et quia promiserat ut daret illi lucernam et filiis eius omni tempore

7 But the Lord did not wish to destroy the house of David because of the pact which he had entered into with him, and because he had promised to give him a lamp—and to his sons—for all time.

8 in diebus illis rebellavit Edom ne esset subditus Iudae et constituit sibi regem

8 In those days Edom rebelled so as not to be subject to Judah, and appointed a king for itself.

9 cumque transisset Ioram cum principibus suis et cuncto equitatu qui erat secum surrexit nocte et percussit Edom qui se circumdederat et omnes duces equitatus eius

9 and when Joram had crossed over with his princes and all the cavalry that was with him, he rose by night and struck Edom, which had surrounded him, and all the commanders of its cavalry

10 attamen rebellavit Edom ne esset sub dicione Iuda usque ad hanc diem eo tempore et Lobna recessit ne esset sub manu illius dereliquerat enim Dominum Deum patrum suorum

10 nevertheless Edom rebelled, so as not to be under the dominion of Judah, unto this day; at that time even Libnah withdrew, so as not to be under his hand, for he had forsaken the Lord, the God of his fathers.

11 insuper et excelsa fabricatus est in urbibus Iuda et fornicari fecit habitatores Hierusalem et praevaricari Iudam

11 moreover he also constructed high places in the cities of Judah, and made the inhabitants of Jerusalem commit fornication, and caused Judah to transgress

12 adlatae sunt autem ei litterae ab Helia propheta in quibus scriptum erat haec dicit Dominus Deus David patris tui quoniam non ambulasti in viis Iosaphat patris tui et in viis Asa regis Iuda

12 But letters were brought to him from Elijah the prophet, in which it was written: Thus says the Lord God of David your father: because you have not walked in the ways of Jehoshaphat your father, and in the ways of Asa, king of Judah

13 but you have walked through the way of the kings of Israel, and you have made Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to fornicate, imitating the fornication of the house of Ahab; moreover, your brothers, the house of your father—better than you—you have killed

14 ecce Dominus percutiet te plaga magna cum populo tuo et filiis et uxoribus tuis universaque substantia tua

14 behold, the Lord will strike you with a great plague, you along with your people and your sons and your wives, and all your substance

15 tu autem aegrotabis pessimo languore uteri donec egrediantur vitalia tua paulatim per dies singulos

15 but you shall be sick with the worst disease of the belly, until your vitals come out little by little, day by day

16 suscitavit ergo Dominus contra Ioram spiritum Philisthinorum et Arabum qui confines sunt Aethiopibus

16 Therefore the Lord stirred up against Joram the spirit of the Philistines and of the Arabs who are contiguous with the Ethiopians.

17 et ascenderunt in terram Iuda et vastaverunt eam diripueruntque cunctam substantiam quae inventa est in domo regis insuper et filios eius et uxores nec remansit ei filius nisi Ioachaz qui minimus natu erat

17 and they went up into the land of Judah and devastated it, and they plundered all the substance that was found in the house of the king, and moreover his sons and his wives; and no son was left to him except Ioachaz, who was youngest by birth.

18 et super haec omnia percussit eum Dominus alvi languore insanabili

18 and over all these things the Lord struck him with an incurable languor of the bowels

19 cumque diei succederet dies et temporum spatia volverentur duorum annorum expletus est circulus et sic longa consumptus tabe ita ut egereret etiam viscera sua languore pariter et vita caruit mortuusque est in infirmitate pessima et non fecit ei populus secundum morem conbustionis exequias sicut fecerat maioribus eius

19 and as day succeeded day and the spans of time rolled on, the cycle of two years was completed; and thus, consumed by a long wasting, to such a degree that he even cast out his own entrails by the illness, he was bereft of life and died in the most grievous infirmity; and the people did not perform for him funeral rites according to the custom of combustion, as they had done for his forefathers.

20 triginta duum annorum fuit cum regnare coepisset et octo annis regnavit in Hierusalem ambulavitque non recte et sepelierunt eum in civitate David verumtamen non in sepulchro regum

20 He was thirty-two years old when he began to reign, and he reigned eight years in Jerusalem, and he walked not rightly; and they buried him in the City of David, nevertheless not in the sepulcher of the kings.

1 constituerunt autem habitatores Hierusalem Ochoziam filium eius minimum regem pro eo omnes enim maiores natu qui ante eum fuerant interfecerant latrones Arabum qui inruerant in castra regnavitque Ochozias filius Ioram regis Iuda

1 But the inhabitants of Jerusalem constituted Ochozias, his youngest son, king in his place; for all the elder ones who had been before him the brigands of the Arabs had slain, who had rushed into the camp; and Ochozias, son of Joram, king of Judah, reigned.

2 filius quadraginta duo annorum erat Ochozias cum regnare coepisset et uno anno regnavit in Hierusalem nomen matris eius Otholia filia Amri

2 Ochozias was forty-two years old when he began to reign, and he reigned one year in Jerusalem; the name of his mother was Otholia, daughter of Amri.

3 sed et ipse ingressus est per vias domus Ahab mater enim eius inpulit eum ut impie ageret

3 but he too went in the ways of the house of Ahab, for his mother impelled him to act impiously

4 fecit igitur malum in conspectu Domini sicut domus Ahab ipsi enim fuerunt ei consiliarii post mortem patris sui in interitum eius

4 therefore he did evil in the sight of the Lord like the house of Ahab, for they were to him counselors after the death of his father, to his destruction

5 ambulavitque in consiliis eorum et perrexit cum Ioram filio Ahab rege Israhel in bellum contra Azahel regem Syriae in Ramoth Galaad vulneraveruntque Syri Ioram

5 And he walked in their counsels and went with Joram, son of Ahab, king of Israel, to war against Hazael, king of Syria, at Ramoth-Gilead; and the Syrians wounded Joram.

6 qui reversus est ut curaretur in Hiezrahel multas enim plagas acceperat in supradicto certamine igitur Azarias filius Ioram rex Iuda descendit ut inviseret Ioram filium Ahab in Hiezrahel aegrotantem

6 who returned to be cared for in Jezreel, for he had received many wounds in the aforesaid contest; therefore Azariah, son of Joram, king of Judah, went down to visit Joram, son of Ahab, ailing in Jezreel.

7 voluntatis quippe fuit Dei adversum Ochoziam ut veniret ad Ioram et cum venisset egrederetur cum eo adversum Hieu filium Namsi quem unxit Dominus ut deleret domum Ahab

7 It was, indeed, by the will of God against Ahaziah that he should come to Joram, and when he had come, he should go out with him against Jehu son of Nimshi, whom the Lord anointed to obliterate the house of Ahab.

8 cum ergo subverteret Hieu domum Ahab invenit principes Iuda et filios fratrum Ochoziae qui ministrabant ei et interfecit illos

8 when therefore Jehu was overthrowing the house of Ahab, he found the princes of Judah and the sons of the brothers of Ahaziah who were ministering to him, and he killed them

9 ipsumque perquirens Ochoziam conprehendit latentem in Samaria adductumque ad se occidit et sepelierunt eum eo quod esset filius Iosaphat qui quaesierat Dominum in toto corde suo nec erat ultra spes aliqua ut de stirpe regnaret Ochoziae

9 and he, searching out Ahaziah himself, apprehended him hiding in Samaria; and when he had been brought to him, he slew him; and they buried him because he was the son of Jehoshaphat, who had sought the Lord with his whole heart; and there was no longer any hope that anyone would reign from the stock of Ahaziah.

10 indeed Athaliah, his mother, seeing that her son was dead, rose up and killed all the royal offspring of the house of Joram

11 Moreover Jehosheba, the king’s daughter, took Joash, the son of Ahaziah, and stole him from the midst of the king’s sons while they were being slain, and she hid him with his nurse in the bedchamber. Now Jehosheba, who had hidden him, was the daughter of King Jehoram, the wife of Jehoiada the priest, sister of Ahaziah; and therefore Athaliah did not kill him.

12 fuit ergo cum eis in domo Dei absconditus sex annis quibus regnavit Otholia super terram

12 he was therefore with them in the house of God, hidden for six years, during which Otholia reigned over the land

1 and in the seventh year, strengthened, Jehoiada took the centurions—Azariah, namely, the son of Jeroham; and Ishmael, the son of Jehohanan; Azariah also, the son of Obed; and Maaseiah, the son of Adaiah; and Elishaphat, the son of Zichri—and he entered into a covenant with them.

2 qui circumeuntes Iudam congregaverunt Levitas de cunctis urbibus Iuda et principes familiarum Israhel veneruntque in Hierusalem

2 who, going around Judah, gathered the Levites from all the cities of Judah, and the princes of the families of Israel, and they came into Jerusalem

3 iniit igitur omnis multitudo pactum in domo Domini cum rege dixitque ad eos Ioiadae ecce filius regis regnabit sicut locutus est Dominus super filios David

3 therefore all the multitude entered into a pact in the house of the Lord with the king, and Jehoiada said to them, Behold, the son of the king will reign, just as the Lord has spoken concerning the sons of David

4 iste est ergo sermo quem facietis

4 this is therefore the thing which you shall do

5 tertia pars vestrum qui veniunt ad sabbatum sacerdotum et Levitarum et ianitorum erit in portis tertia vero pars ad domum regis et tertia in porta quae appellatur Fundamenti omne vero reliquum vulgus sit in atriis domus Domini

5 a third part of you who come on the sabbath—the priests and the Levites and the gatekeepers—shall be at the gates, moreover a third part at the house of the king, and a third at the gate which is called the Foundation; but let all the remaining people be in the courts of the house of the Lord

6 nec quisquam alius ingrediatur domum Domini nisi sacerdotes et qui ministrant de Levitis ipsi tantummodo ingrediantur quia sanctificati sunt et omne reliquum vulgus observet custodias Domini

6 and let no one else enter the house of the Lord except the priests and those who minister from among the Levites; they themselves only let them enter, because they have been sanctified, and let all the rest of the populace observe the watches of the Lord.

7 Levitae autem circumdent regem habentes singuli arma sua et si quis alius ingressus fuerit templum interficiatur sintque cum rege et intrante et egrediente

7 But the Levites shall surround the king, each holding his own arms; and if anyone else enters the temple, let him be put to death; and let them be with the king both as he enters and as he goes out.

8 fecerunt igitur Levitae et universus Iuda iuxta omnia quae praeceperat Ioiadae pontifex et adsumpserunt singuli viros qui sub se erant et veniebant per ordinem sabbati cum his qui iam impleverant sabbatum et egressuri erant siquidem Ioiadae pontifex non dimiserat abire turmas quae sibi per singulas ebdomadas succedere consueverant

8 therefore the Levites and all Judah did according to all that Jehoiada the pontiff had commanded, and each took the men who were under him, those who were coming on duty in the order of the Sabbath together with those who had already fulfilled the Sabbath and were about to depart; for Jehoiada the pontiff had not allowed the divisions, which were accustomed to succeed one another to him by single hebdomads, to go away.

9 deditque Ioiadae sacerdos centurionibus lanceas clypeosque et peltas regis David quas consecraverat in domo Domini

9 and Jehoiada the priest gave to the centurions lances, shields, and bucklers of King David, which had been consecrated in the house of the Lord

10 constituitque omnem populum tenentium pugiones a parte templi dextra usque ad partem templi sinistram coram altari et templo per circuitum regis

10 and he stationed all the people, those holding daggers, from the right side of the temple unto the left side of the temple, before the altar and the temple, in a circuit about the king

11 et eduxerunt filium regis et inposuerunt ei diadema dederuntque in manu eius tenendam legem et constituerunt eum regem unxit quoque illum Ioiadae pontifex et filii eius inprecatique sunt atque dixerunt vivat rex

11 and they led out the son of the king and placed upon him the diadem, and they gave into his hand the Law to be held, and they constituted him king; Jehoiada the high priest also anointed him, and his sons, and they invoked blessings and said, Long live the king

12 quod cum audisset Otholia vocem scilicet currentium atque laudantium regem ingressa est ad populum in templum Domini

12 which, when Otholia heard—the sound, namely, of those running and lauding the king—she went in to the people into the temple of the Lord

13 cumque vidisset regem stantem super gradum in introitu et principes turmasque circa eum omnem quoque populum terrae gaudentem atque clangentem tubis et diversi generis organis concinentem vocemque laudantium scidit vestimenta sua et ait insidiae insidiae

13 and when she had seen the king standing upon the step at the entrance, and the princes and the troops around him, and all the people of the land rejoicing and blaring with trumpets, and with instruments of diverse kinds sounding in concert, and the voice of those praising, she tore her garments and said, Treason, treason!

14 egressus autem Ioiadae pontifex ad centuriones et principes exercitus dixit eis educite illam extra septa templi et interficiatur foris gladio praecepitque sacerdos ne occideretur in domo Domini

14 but the high priest Jehoiada, having gone out to the centurions and the chiefs of the army, said to them: lead her outside the enclosures of the temple, and let her be slain outside by the sword; and the priest commanded that she not be killed in the house of the Lord

15 et inposuerunt cervicibus eius manus cumque intrasset portam Equorum domus regis interfecerunt eam ibi

15 and they laid hands upon her neck; and when she had entered the Horse Gate of the king’s house, they slew her there

16 pepigit autem Ioiadae foedus inter se universumque populum et regem ut esset populus Domini

16 But Jehoiada made a covenant between himself and all the people and the king, that they should be the people of the Lord.

17 itaque ingressus est omnis populus domum Baal et destruxerunt eam et altaria ac simulacra illius confregerunt Matthan quoque sacerdotem Baal interfecerunt ante aras

17 and so all the people entered the house of Baal and destroyed it, and they shattered its altars and simulacra; Matthan also, the priest of Baal, they killed before the altars

18 constituit autem Ioiadae praepositos in domo Domini et sub manibus sacerdotum ac Levitarum quos distribuit David in domo Domini ut offerrent holocausta Domino sicut scriptum est in lege Mosi in gaudio et canticis iuxta dispositionem David

18 moreover Jehoiada appointed overseers in the house of the Lord, under the authority of the priests and the Levites whom David had distributed in the house of the Lord, that they might offer burnt offerings to the Lord as it is written in the law of Moses, with joy and songs, according to the disposition of David

19 constituit quoque ianitores in portis domus Domini ut non ingrederetur eam inmundus in omni re

19 he also appointed doorkeepers at the gates of the house of the Lord, so that no unclean person in any respect might enter it

20 adsumpsitque centuriones et fortissimos viros ac principes populi et omne vulgus terrae et fecerunt descendere regem de domo Domini et introire per medium portae superioris in domum regis et conlocaverunt eum in solio regali

20 and he took the centurions and the most valiant men and the chiefs of the people and all the common crowd of the land, and they made the king descend from the house of the Lord and enter through the middle of the upper gate into the house of the king, and they placed him on the royal throne.

21 laetatusque est omnis populus terrae et urbs quievit porro Otholia interfecta est gladio

21 and all the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was quiet; moreover, Otholia was slain by the sword.

1 septem annorum erat Ioas cum regnare coepisset et quadraginta annis regnavit in Hierusalem nomen matris eius Sebia de Bersabee

1 Ioas was seven years old when he began to reign, and he reigned for forty years in Jerusalem; the name of his mother was Sebia of Bersabee.

2 fecitque quod bonum est coram Domino cunctis diebus Ioiadae sacerdotis

2 and he did what is good before the Lord all the days of Jehoiada the priest

3 accepit autem ei Ioiadae uxores duas e quibus genuit filios et filias

3 and Jehoiada took for him two wives, from whom he begot sons and daughters

4 post quae placuit Ioas ut instauraret domum Domini

4 after these things it pleased Joash to restore the house of the Lord

5 congregavitque sacerdotes et Levitas et dixit eis egredimini ad civitates Iuda et colligite de universo Israhel pecuniam ad sarta tecta templi Dei vestri per singulos annos festinatoque hoc facite porro Levitae egere neglegentius

5 and he congregated the priests and the Levites and said to them, Go out to the cities of Judah and collect from all Israel money for the repairs of the temple of your God year by year, and do this with haste; but the Levites acted more negligently.

6 vocavitque rex Ioiadae principem et dixit ei quare non tibi fuit curae ut cogeres Levitas inferre de Iuda et de Hierusalem pecuniam quae constituta est a Mose servo Domini ut inferret eam omnis multitudo Israhel in tabernaculum testimonii

6 and the king called Jehoiada the chief priest and said to him why has it not been a care to you to gather the Levites to bring in from Judah and from Jerusalem the money which has been constituted by Moses the servant of the Lord, that all the multitude of Israel should bring it into the tabernacle of testimony

7 Otholia enim impiissima et filii eius destruxerunt domum Domini et de universis quae sanctificata fuerant templo Domini ornaverunt fanum Baalim

7 For Athaliah, most impious, and her sons destroyed the house of the Lord, and out of all the things that had been sanctified to the temple of the Lord they adorned the fane of the Baalim.

8 praecepit ergo rex et fecerunt arcam posueruntque eam iuxta portam domus Domini forinsecus

8 therefore the king gave orders, and they made an ark, and they placed it beside the gate of the house of the Lord, outside

9 et praedicatum est in Iuda et Hierusalem ut deferrent singuli pretium Domino quod constituit Moses servus Dei super omnem Israhel in deserto

9 and it was proclaimed in Judah and Jerusalem that each should bring the price to the Lord which Moses, the servant of God, appointed over all Israel in the desert

10 laetatique sunt cuncti principes et omnis populus et ingressi contulerunt in arcam Domini atque miserunt ita ut impleretur

10 and all the princes and all the people were made glad, and entering they contributed into the Ark of the Lord and put in, so that it was filled

11 cumque tempus esset ut deferrent arcam coram rege per manus Levitarum videbant enim multam pecuniam ingrediebatur scriba regis et quem primus sacerdos constituerat effundebantque pecuniam quae erat in arca porro arcam reportabant ad locum suum sicque faciebant per singulos dies et congregata est infinita pecunia

11 and when it was time to bring the chest before the king by the hands of the Levites—for they saw much money—the scribe of the king would enter, and the one whom the chief priest had appointed, and they would pour out the money that was in the chest; then they would carry the chest back to its place; and thus they did day by day, and an immense amount of money was gathered.

12 quam dederunt rex et Ioiada his qui praeerant operibus domus Domini at illi conducebant ex ea caesores lapidum et artifices operum singulorum ut instaurarent domum Domini fabros quoque ferri et aeris ut quod cadere coeperat fulciretur

12 which the king and Jehoiada gave to those who were over the works of the house of the Lord; and they hired from it stone-cutters and artificers of each kind of work to restore the house of the Lord, and also smiths of iron and bronze, so that what had begun to fall might be shored up.

13 egeruntque hii qui operabantur industrie et obducebatur parietum cicatrix per manus eorum ac suscitaverunt domum Domini in statum pristinum et firme eam stare fecerunt

13 and those who were working acted industriously, and the scar of the walls was overlaid through their hands, and they raised up the house of the Lord to its pristine state and made it stand firm.

14 cumque conplessent omnia opera detulerunt coram rege et Ioiadae reliquam partem pecuniae de qua facta sunt vasa templi in ministerium et ad holocausta fialae quoque et cetera vasa aurea et argentea et offerebantur holocausta in domo Domini iugiter cunctis diebus Ioiadae

14 and when they had completed all the work, they brought before the king and Jehoiada the remaining part of the money, from which were made vessels of the temple for the ministry and for the holocausts, phials also and the other vessels of gold and silver; and holocausts were offered in the house of the Lord continually all the days of Jehoiada.

15 senuit autem Ioiadae plenus dierum et mortuus est cum centum triginta esset annorum

15 But Jehoiada grew old, full of days, and he died when he was 130 years old.

16 sepelieruntque eum in civitate David cum regibus eo quod fecisset bonum cum Israhel et cum domo eius

16 and they buried him in the city of David with the kings, because he had done good with Israel and with his house.

17 postquam autem obiit Ioiada ingressi sunt principes Iuda et adoraverunt regem qui delinitus obsequiis eorum adquievit eis

17 after Jehoiada died, the princes of Judah entered and paid homage to the king, who, beguiled by their obsequious attentions, acquiesced to them

18 et dereliquerunt templum Domini Dei patrum suorum servieruntque lucis et sculptilibus et facta est ira contra Iudam et Hierusalem propter hoc peccatum

18 and they abandoned the temple of the Lord, the God of their fathers, and served the groves and the sculpted images, and wrath came against Judah and Jerusalem because of this sin.

19 mittebatque eis prophetas ut reverterentur ad Dominum quos protestantes illi audire nolebant

19 and he kept sending to them prophets that they might return to the Lord; but, though they were protesting, they were unwilling to listen to them

20 spiritus itaque Dei induit Zacchariam filium Ioiadae sacerdotem et stetit in conspectu populi et dixit eis haec dicit Dominus quare transgredimini praeceptum Domini quod vobis non proderit et dereliquistis Dominum ut derelinqueret vos

20 Therefore the Spirit of God invested Zechariah, the son of Jehoiada the priest, and he stood in the sight of the people and said to them: Thus says the Lord: Why do you transgress the precept of the Lord, which will not profit you? And you have forsaken the Lord, so that he might forsake you.

21 qui congregati adversus eum miserunt lapides iuxta regis imperium in atrio domus Domini

21 who, having assembled against him, stoned him, according to the king’s command, in the atrium of the house of the Lord

22 et non est recordatus Ioas rex misericordiae quam fecerat Ioiadae pater illius secum sed interfecit filium eius qui cum moreretur ait videat Dominus et requirat

22 and Joash the king did not remember the mercy which Jehoiada, his father, had done with him, but he killed his son; who, when he was dying, said, “May the Lord see and require it.”

23 cumque evolutus esset annus ascendit contra eum exercitus Syriae venitque in Iudam et Hierusalem et interfecit cunctos principes populi atque universam praedam miserunt regi Damascum

23 and when the year had revolved, the army of Syria ascended against him and came into Judah and Jerusalem, and slew all the princes of the people, and all the booty they sent to the king of Damascus

24 et certe cum permodicus venisset numerus Syrorum tradidit Dominus manibus eorum infinitam multitudinem eo quod reliquissent Dominum Deum patrum suorum in Ioas quoque ignominiosa exercuere iudicia

24 and certainly, when a very small number of Syrians had come, the Lord delivered into their hands an immense multitude, because they had forsaken the Lord, the God of their fathers; upon Joash too they executed ignominious judgments.

25 et abeuntes dimiserunt eum in languoribus magnis surrexerunt autem contra eum servi sui in ultionem sanguinis filii Ioiadae sacerdotis et occiderunt eum in lectulo suo et mortuus est sepelieruntque eum in civitate David sed non in sepulchris regum

25 and going away, they left him in great languors; however, his own servants rose up against him in vengeance for the blood of the son of Jehoiada the priest, and they killed him on his bed; and he died, and they buried him in the city of David, but not in the sepulchers of the kings

26 insidiati vero sunt ei Zabath filius Semath Ammanitidis et Iozabath filius Semarith Moabitidis

26 but lay in wait for him Zabath son of Semath the Ammonitess and Iozabath son of Semarith the Moabitess

27 porro filii eius ac summa pecuniae quae adunata fuerat sub eo et instauratio domus Dei scripta sunt diligentius in libro regum regnavitque Amasias filius eius pro eo

27 moreover, his sons, and the sum of the money that had been gathered under him, and the restoration of the house of God, are written more diligently in the book of the kings; and Amaziah his son reigned in his place

1 Amaziah was twenty-five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem; the name of his mother was Ioaden of Jerusalem.

2 fecitque bonum in conspectu Domini verumtamen non in corde perfecto

2 and he did what was good in the sight of the Lord; nevertheless not with a perfect heart

3 cumque roboratum sibi videret imperium iugulavit servos qui occiderant regem patrem suum

3 And when he saw the kingdom confirmed to himself, he slew the servants who had killed the king, his father.

4 sed filios eorum non interfecit sicut scriptum est in libro legis Mosi ubi praecepit Dominus dicens non occidentur patres pro filiis neque filii pro patribus suis sed unusquisque in suo peccato morietur

4 but he did not put to death their sons, as it is written in the book of the law of Moses, where the Lord commanded, saying, the fathers shall not be put to death for the sons, nor the sons for their fathers; but each one shall die in his own sin.

5 congregavit igitur Amasias Iudam et constituit eos per familias tribunosque et centuriones in universo Iuda et Beniamin et recensuit a viginti annis sursum invenitque triginta milia iuvenum qui egrederentur ad pugnam et tenerent hastam et clypeum

5 therefore Amaziah gathered Judah and appointed them by families, and tribunes and centurions, in all Judah and Benjamin; and he mustered from twenty years old and upward, and found 30,000 youths who would go out to battle and hold spear and shield

6 mercede quoque conduxit de Israhel centum milia robustorum centum talentis argenti

6 He also, for wages, hired from Israel one hundred thousand robust men for one hundred talents of silver.

7 venit autem homo Dei ad illum et ait o rex ne egrediatur tecum exercitus Israhel non est enim Dominus cum Israhel et cunctis filiis Ephraim

7 but a man of God came to him and said, O king, let not the army of Israel go out with you; for the Lord is not with Israel, nor with all the sons of Ephraim

8 quod si putas in robore exercitus bella consistere superari te faciet Deus ab hostibus Dei quippe est et adiuvare et in fugam vertere

8 but if you think that wars consist in the strength of an army, God will cause you to be overcome by enemies; for it is God’s both to aid and to turn into flight

9 And Amaziah said to the man of God, “What then will be done about the hundred talents which I gave to the soldiers of Israel?” And the man of God answered him, “The Lord has that whence he can give to you much more than these.”

10 separavit itaque Amasias exercitum qui venerat ad eum ex Ephraim ut reverteretur in locum suum at illi contra Iudam vehementer irati reversi sunt in regionem suam

10 therefore Amaziah separated the army that had come to him from Ephraim, that it might return to its place; but they, vehemently enraged against Judah, returned to their own region

11 porro Amasias confidenter eduxit populum suum et abiit in vallem Salinarum percussitque filios Seir decem milia

11 furthermore Amaziah confidently led out his people and went into the Valley of Salt and struck down 10,000 of the sons of Seir

12 et alia decem milia virorum ceperunt filii Iuda et adduxerunt ad praeruptum cuiusdam petrae praecipitaveruntque eos de summo in praeceps qui universi crepuerunt

12 and another ten thousand men the sons of Judah captured, and they led them to the precipice of a certain rock, and precipitated them headlong from the summit, and they all were shattered.

13 at ille exercitus quem remiserat Amasias ne secum iret ad proelium diffusus est in civitatibus Iuda a Samaria usque Bethoron et interfectis tribus milibus diripuit praedam magnam

13 but that army which Amaziah had sent back, that it might not go with him to the battle, spread out in the cities of Judah from Samaria as far as Bethoron, and, after killing three thousand, carried off great plunder

14 Amasias vero post caedem Idumeorum et adlatos deos filiorum Seir statuit illos in deos sibi et adorabat eos et illis adolebat incensum

14 But Amaziah, after the slaughter of the Idumeans and after the gods of the sons of Seir had been brought, set those up as gods for himself, and he worshiped them and burned incense to them.

15 quam ob rem iratus Dominus contra Amasiam misit ad illum prophetam qui diceret ei cur adorasti deos qui non liberaverunt populum suum de manu tua

15 for which reason, the Lord, angered against Amaziah, sent to him a prophet, who would say to him: why have you adored gods who did not liberate their own people from your hand?

16 cumque haec ille loqueretur respondit ei num consiliarius regis es quiesce ne interficiam te discedensque propheta scio inquit quod cogitaverit Dominus occidere te qui et fecisti hoc malum et insuper non adquievisti consilio meo

16 and while he was speaking these things, he replied to him, Are you the king’s counselor? Be quiet, lest I kill you. And as the prophet was departing, he said, I know that the Lord has determined to kill you, because you have done this evil, and moreover you have not acquiesced to my counsel.

17 igitur Amasias rex Iuda inito pessimo consilio misit ad Ioas filium Ioachaz filii Hieu regem Israhel dicens veni videamus nos mutuo

17 therefore Amaziah king of Judah, having entered upon the worst counsel, sent to Joash son of Jehoahaz, son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying, Come, let us see one another.

18 at ille remisit nuntium dicens carduus qui est in Libano misit ad cedrum Libani dicens da filiam tuam filio meo uxorem et ecce bestiae quae erant in silva Libani transierunt et conculcaverunt carduum

18 but he sent back a message, saying: the thistle which is in Lebanon sent to the cedar of Lebanon, saying, give your daughter to my son as a wife; and behold, the beasts that were in the forest of Lebanon passed through and trampled the thistle.

19 dixisti percussi Edom et idcirco erigitur cor tuum in superbiam sede in domo tua cur malum adversum te provocas ut cadas et tu et Iudas tecum

19 you said, I struck Edom, and therefore your heart is raised up into superbia; sit in your house; why do you provoke evil against yourself, that you may fall, both you and Judah with you

20 noluit audire Amasias eo quod Domini esset voluntas ut traderetur in manibus hostium propter deos Edom

20 Amaziah was unwilling to hear, because it was the will of the Lord that he be handed over into the hands of the enemies, on account of the gods of Edom.

21 ascendit igitur Ioas rex Israhel et mutuos sibi praebuere conspectus Amasias autem rex Iuda erat in Bethsames Iudae

21 therefore Joash king of Israel went up, and they came face to face; but Amaziah king of Judah was in Beth-shemesh of Judah

22 corruitque Iudas coram Israhel et fugit in tabernacula sua

22 and Judah fell before Israel and fled to their tents

23 porro Amasiam regem Iuda filium Ioas filii Ioachaz cepit Ioas rex Israhel in Bethsames et adduxit in Hierusalem destruxitque murum eius a porta Ephraim usque ad portam Anguli quadringentis cubitis

23 Moreover Joash king of Israel captured Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Joash son of Jehoahaz, at Beth-shemesh, and brought him to Jerusalem, and he destroyed its wall from the Gate of Ephraim as far as the Corner Gate, four hundred cubits.

24 omne quoque aurum et argentum et universa vasa quae reppererat in domo Dei et apud Obededom in thesauris etiam domus regiae necnon et filios obsidum reduxit Samariam

24 he also brought back to Samaria all the gold and the silver and all the vessels which he had found in the house of God and with Obed-edom, and in the treasuries of the royal house, as well as the sons given as hostages

25 vixit autem Amasias filius Ioas rex Iuda postquam mortuus est Ioas filius Ioachaz rex Israhel quindecim annis

25 Now Amaziah son of Joash, king of Judah, lived fifteen years after Joash son of Jehoahaz, king of Israel, had died.

26 but the rest of the words of Amaziah, the former and the latter, are written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel

27 qui postquam recessit a Domino tetenderunt ei insidias in Hierusalem cumque fugisset Lachis miserunt et interfecerunt eum ibi

27 who, after he withdrew from the Lord, they laid ambushes for him in Jerusalem; and when he had fled to Lachish, they sent and killed him there

28 reportantesque super equos sepelierunt eum cum patribus suis in civitate David

28 and bringing him back upon horses, they buried him with his fathers in the city of David

2 he himself built Ahilath and restored it to the dominion of Judah after the king slept with his fathers

3 Ozias was sixteen years old when he began to reign, and he reigned fifty-two years in Jerusalem; the name of his mother was Hiechelia of Jerusalem.

4 fecitque quod erat rectum in oculis Domini iuxta omnia quae fecerat Amasias pater eius

4 and he did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, according to all that Amaziah his father had done

5 et exquisivit Deum in diebus Zacchariae intellegentis et videntis Deum cumque requireret Dominum direxit eum in omnibus

5 and he sought out God in the days of Zechariah, intelligent in the visions of God; and as he sought the Lord, He directed him in all things

6 denique egressus est et pugnavit contra Philisthim et destruxit murum Geth et murum Iabniae murumque Azoti aedificavit quoque oppida in Azoto et in Philisthim

6 then he went out and fought against the Philistines, and he destroyed the wall of Gath and the wall of Jabneh and the wall of Ashdod; he also built towns in Ashdod and among the Philistines

7 et adiuvit eum Deus contra Philisthim et contra Arabas qui habitabant in Gurbaal et contra Ammanitas

7 and God helped him against the Philistines and against the Arabs who were dwelling in Gurbaal, and against the Ammonites

8 pendebantque Ammanitae munera Oziae et divulgatum est nomen eius usque ad introitum Aegypti propter crebras victorias

8 and the Ammonites were paying tribute to Uzziah, and his name was divulged as far as the entrance of Egypt on account of frequent victories

9 aedificavitque Ozias turres in Hierusalem super portam Anguli et super portam Vallis et reliquas in eodem muri latere firmavitque eas

9 And Ozias built towers in Jerusalem above the Gate of the Angle and above the Gate of the Valley, and he strengthened the rest on the same side of the wall.

10 extruxit etiam turres in solitudine et fodit cisternas plurimas eo quod haberet multa pecora tam in campestribus quam in heremi vastitate vineas quoque habuit et vinitores in montibus et in Carmelo erat quippe homo agriculturae deditus

10 he also erected towers in the wilderness, and dug very many cisterns, because he had many herds both in the plains and in the waste of the desert; he also had vineyards and vinedressers on the mountains and in Carmel, for he was indeed a man devoted to agriculture.

11 fuit autem exercitus bellatorum eius qui procedebant ad proelia sub manu Hiehihel scribae Maasiaeque doctoris et sub manu Ananiae qui erat de ducibus regis

11 Now the army of his warriors, who went forth to battles, was under the hand of Hiehihel the scribe and of Maasia the teacher, and under the hand of Anania, who was among the leaders of the king.

12 omnisque numerus principum per familias virorum fortium duum milium sescentorum

12 and the whole number of the princes by families of mighty men was two thousand six hundred

13 et sub eis universus exercitus trecentorum et septem milium quingentorum qui erant apti ad bella et pro rege contra adversarios dimicabant

13 and under them the whole army of three hundred and seven thousand five hundred, who were apt for battles and fought for the king against adversaries

14 praeparavit quoque eis Ozias id est cuncto exercitui clypeos et hastas et galeas et loricas arcusque et fundas ad iaciendos lapides

14 Uzziah also prepared for them, that is, for the whole army, shields and spears and helmets and cuirasses, and bows and slings for hurling stones

15 et fecit in Hierusalem diversi generis machinas quas in turribus conlocavit et in angulis murorum ut mitterent sagittas et saxa grandia egressumque est nomen eius procul eo quod auxiliaretur ei Dominus et corroborasset illum

15 and he made in Jerusalem machines of diverse kinds, which he placed in the towers and at the corners of the walls, so that they might shoot arrows and great stones; and his name went forth far, because the Lord aided him and had strengthened him.

16 sed cum roboratus esset elevatum est cor eius in interitum suum et neglexit Dominum Deum suum ingressusque templum Domini adolere voluit incensum super altare thymiamatis

16 but when he had been strengthened, his heart was lifted up to his own destruction, and he neglected the Lord his God, and having entered the temple of the Lord he wished to burn incense upon the altar of thymiamatis

17 statimque ingressus post eum Azarias sacerdos et cum eo sacerdotes Domini octoginta viri fortissimi

17 and immediately Azariah the priest entered after him, and with him the priests of the Lord, eighty most valiant men

18 restiterunt regi atque dixerunt non est tui officii Ozia ut adoleas incensum Domino sed sacerdotum hoc est filiorum Aaron qui consecrati sunt ad huiuscemodi ministerium egredere de sanctuario ne contempseris quia non reputabitur tibi in gloriam hoc a Domino Deo

18 they resisted the king and said, It is not your office, Uzziah, to burn incense to the Lord, but it is the office of the priests, the sons of Aaron, who have been consecrated for ministry of this kind; go out from the sanctuary; do not contemn, for this will not be reckoned to you for glory by the Lord God.

19 iratusque est Ozias et tenens in manu turibulum ut adoleret incensum minabatur sacerdotibus statimque orta est lepra in fronte eius coram sacerdotibus in domo Domini super altare thymiamatis

19 and Ozias grew angry, and holding a censer in his hand to burn incense, he was threatening the priests; and immediately leprosy arose on his forehead before the priests, in the house of the Lord, upon the altar of incense

20 cumque respexisset eum Azarias pontifex et omnes reliqui sacerdotes viderunt lepram in fronte eius et festinato expulerunt eum sed et ipse perterritus adceleravit egredi eo quod sensisset ilico plagam Domini

20 and when Azarias the pontiff looked at him and all the rest of the priests saw the leprosy on his forehead, they hastily drove him out; but he too, terrified, hastened to go out, because he had immediately sensed the plague of the Lord.

21 fuit igitur Ozias rex leprosus usque ad diem mortis suae et habitavit in domo separata plenus lepra ob quam et eiectus fuerat de domo Domini porro Ioatham filius eius rexit domum regis et iudicabat populum terrae

21 therefore Ozias the king was leprous until the day of his death, and he dwelt in a separate house, full of leprosy, on account of which he had also been ejected from the house of the Lord; moreover Ioatham his son governed the house of the king and judged the people of the land.

22 But the rest of the deeds of Ozias, first and last, Isaiah son of Amos the prophet wrote.

23 dormivitque Ozias cum patribus suis et sepelierunt eum in agro regalium sepulchrorum eo quod esset leprosus regnavitque Ioatham filius eius pro eo

23 and Ozias slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the field of the royal sepulchers, because he was leprous; and Ioatham, his son, reigned in his place.

2 And he did what was right before the Lord, according to all that Uzziah his father had done, except that he did not enter the temple of the Lord; and yet the people were still delinquent.

3 ipse aedificavit portam domus Domini Excelsam et in muro Ophel multa construxit

3 he himself built the Upper Gate of the house of the Lord, and on the wall of Ophel he constructed many things

4 urbes quoque aedificavit in montibus Iuda et in saltibus castella et turres

4 he also built cities in the mountains of Judah, and in the forests he built castles and towers

5 ipse pugnavit contra regem filiorum Ammon et vicit eos dederuntque ei filii Ammon in tempore illo centum talenta argenti et decem milia choros tritici ac totidem choros hordei haec ei praebuerunt filii Ammon in anno secundo et tertio

5 he himself fought against the king of the sons of Ammon and conquered them, and the sons of Ammon gave him at that time 100 talents of silver and 10,000 kors of wheat and just as many kors of barley; these the sons of Ammon furnished to him in the 2nd and 3rd year

6 corroboratusque est Ioatham eo quod direxisset vias suas coram Domino Deo suo

6 and Jotham was strengthened because he had directed his ways before the Lord his God

2 but he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel, moreover he cast statues for the Baalim

3 ipse est qui adolevit incensum in valle Benennon et lustravit filios suos in igne iuxta ritum gentium quas interfecit Dominus in adventu filiorum Israhel

3 he it is who kindled incense in the Valley of Ben-Hinnom and lustrated his sons in the fire according to the rite of the nations whom the Lord destroyed at the advent of the sons of Israel

4 sacrificabat quoque et thymiama succendebat in excelsis et in collibus et sub omni ligno frondoso

4 he also sacrificed and burned incense on the high places and on the hills and under every leafy tree

5 tradiditque eum Dominus Deus eius in manu regis Syriae qui percussit eum magnamque praedam de eius cepit imperio et adduxit in Damascum manibus quoque regis Israhel traditus est et percussus plaga grandi

5 and the Lord his God delivered him into the hand of the king of Syria, who struck him and seized a great prey from his imperium and brought it to Damascus; into the hands also of the king of Israel he was delivered and was struck with a great blow

6 occiditque Phacee filius Romeliae de Iuda centum viginti milia in die uno omnes viros bellatores eo quod reliquissent Dominum Deum patrum suorum

6 And Pekah son of Remaliah struck down from Judah 120,000 in one day, all men of war, because they had forsaken the Lord God of their fathers.

7 eodem tempore occidit Zechri vir potens ex Ephraim Masiam filium regis et Ezricam ducem domus eius Helcanam quoque secundum a rege

7 at the same time Zechri, a mighty man from Ephraim, slew Maaseiah the king’s son, and Azrikam, the leader of his house, and Elkanah also, second after the king.

8 ceperuntque filii Israhel de fratribus suis ducenta milia mulierum puerorum et puellarum et infinitam praedam pertuleruntque eam in Samariam

8 and the sons of Israel took from their brothers two hundred thousand women, boys, and girls, and an immense prey, and they carried it to Samaria

9 ea tempestate erat ibi propheta Domini nomine Oded qui egressus obviam exercitui venientium in Samariam dixit eis ecce iratus Dominus Deus patrum vestrorum contra Iudam tradidit eos manibus vestris et occidistis illos atrociter ita ut caelum pertingeret vestra crudelitas

9 at that time there was there a prophet of the Lord named Oded, who, having gone out to meet the army of those coming into Samaria, said to them: behold, the Lord God of your fathers, being angry against Judah, delivered them into your hands, and you slew them atrociously, so that your cruelty reached to heaven

10 insuper filios Iuda et Hierusalem vultis vobis subicere in servos et ancillas quod nequaquam facto opus est peccatis enim super hoc Domino Deo vestro

10 moreover, you wish to subject the sons of Judah and Jerusalem to yourselves as servants and handmaids; which by no means ought to be done, for in this you are sinning against the Lord your God

11 sed audite consilium meum et reducite captivos quos adduxistis de fratribus vestris quia magnus furor Domini inminet vobis

11 But hear my counsel, and bring back the captives whom you have led from your brothers, because great wrath of the Lord impends over you.

12 steterunt itaque viri de principibus filiorum Ephraim Azarias filius Iohanan Barachias filius Mosollamoth Hiezechias filius Sellum et Amasa filius Adali contra eos qui veniebant de proelio

12 So there stood men from among the chiefs of the sons of Ephraim—Azariah son of Johanan, Berechiah son of Meshillemoth, Hezekiah son of Shallum, and Amasa son of Hadlai—against those who were coming from the battle.

13 et dixerunt eis non introducetis huc captivos ne peccemus Domino quare vultis adicere super peccata nostra et vetera cumulare delicta grande quippe peccatum est et ira furoris Domini inminet super Israhel

13 and they said to them: You shall not bring the captives in here, lest we sin against the Lord; why do you want to add upon our sins and heap up the former delicts? For it is indeed a great sin, and the wrath of the Lord’s fury is imminent over Israel.

14 dimiseruntque viri bellatores praedam et universa quae ceperant coram principibus et omni multitudine

14 and the warrior men released the booty and all the things which they had taken before the princes and all the multitude

15 steteruntque viri quos supra memoravimus et adprehendentes captivos omnesque qui nudi erant vestierunt de spoliis cumque vestissent eos et calciassent et refecissent cibo ac potu unxissent quoque propter laborem et adhibuissent eis curam quicumque ambulare non poterant et erant inbecillo corpore inposuerunt eos iumentis et adduxerunt Hierichum civitatem Palmarum ad fratres eorum ipsique reversi sunt Samariam

15 and the men whom we mentioned above stood, and taking hold of the captives, they clothed from the spoils all who were naked; and when they had clothed them and shod them and had refreshed them with food and drink, they also anointed them on account of the toil, and they applied care to them; whoever were not able to walk and were of feeble body they set upon beasts, and they brought them to Jericho, the City of Palms, to their brothers, and they themselves returned to Samaria.

16 tempore illo misit rex Achaz ad regem Assyriorum auxilium postulans

16 At that time King Ahaz sent to the king of the Assyrians, asking for help.

17 veneruntque Idumei et percusserunt multos ex Iuda et ceperunt praedam magnam

17 And the Idumeans came and struck down many from Judah, and they took great plunder.

18 Philisthim quoque diffusi sunt per urbes campestres et ad meridiem Iuda ceperuntque Bethsames et Ahilon et Gaderoth Soccho quoque et Thamnam et Gamzo cum viculis suis et habitaverunt in eis

18 The Philistines likewise were spread out through the cities of the plain and toward the south of Judah, and they captured Beth-shemesh and Aijalon and Gederoth, Soco also and Timnah and Gimzo with their villages, and they dwelt in them.

19 humiliaverat enim Dominus Iudam propter Achaz regem Iuda eo quod nudasset eum auxilio et contemptui habuisset Dominum

19 For the Lord had humbled Judah because of Ahaz, king of Judah, in that he had stripped it of aid and had held the Lord in contempt.

20 adduxitque contra eum Thaglathphalnasar regem Assyriorum qui et adflixit eum et nullo resistente vastavit

20 and he brought against him Tiglath-pileser, king of the Assyrians, who also afflicted him and, with no one resisting, devastated.

21 igitur Achaz spoliata domo Domini et domo regum et principum dedit regi Assyriorum munera et tamen nihil ei profuit

21 therefore Ahaz, having despoiled the house of the Lord and the house of the kings and of the princes, gave gifts to the king of the Assyrians, and yet it profited him nothing

22 insuper et in tempore angustiae suae auxit contemptum in Dominum ipse per se rex Achaz

22 moreover, even in the time of his anguish, King Ahaz himself, on his own, increased contempt against the Lord

23 immolavit diis Damasci victimas percussoribus suis et dixit dii regum Syriae auxiliantur eis quos ego placabo hostiis et aderunt mihi cum e contrario ipsi fuerint ruina eius et universo Israhel

23 he immolated victims to the gods of Damascus, his smiters, and said, “the gods of the kings of Syria assist them; those I will placate with offerings, and they will be present to me,” but on the contrary they themselves were his ruin and that of all Israel

24 direptis itaque Achaz omnibus vasis domus Dei atque confractis clusit ianuas templi Dei et fecit sibi altaria in universis angulis Hierusalem

24 therefore, after Ahaz had plundered all the vessels of the house of God and had shattered them, he closed the doors of the temple of God, and he made altars for himself in all the corners of Jerusalem

25 in omnibus quoque urbibus Iuda extruxit aras ad cremandum tus atque ad iracundiam provocavit Dominum Deum patrum suorum

25 in all the cities of Judah also he erected altars for burning incense, and he provoked to wrath the Lord God of his fathers

26 reliqua autem sermonum eius et omnium operum priorum et novissimorum scripta sunt in libro regum Iuda et Israhel

26 but the rest of his sayings and of all his works, former and latest, are written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel

27 and Ahaz slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the city Jerusalem; for they did not receive him into the sepulchers of the kings of Israel; and Hezekiah his son reigned in his stead.

1 igitur Ezechias regnare coepit cum viginti quinque esset annorum et viginti novem annis regnavit in Hierusalem nomen matris eius Abia filia Zacchariae

1 therefore Hezekiah began to reign when he was twenty-five years old, and for twenty-nine years he reigned in Jerusalem; the name of his mother was Abijah, daughter of Zechariah

2 and he did what was pleasing in the sight of the Lord, according to all that David his father had done

3 he himself, in the first year and month of his reign, opened the valves of the house of the Lord and restored them

4 adduxitque sacerdotes atque Levitas et congregavit eos in plateam orientalem

4 and he brought the priests and the Levites and congregated them in the eastern plaza

5 dixitque ad eos audite me Levitae et sanctificamini mundate domum Domini Dei patrum vestrorum auferte omnem inmunditiam de sanctuario

5 and he said to them, Hear me, Levites, and sanctify yourselves, cleanse the house of the Lord, the God of your fathers; remove every impurity from the sanctuary.

6 peccaverunt patres nostri et fecerunt malum in conspectu Domini Dei nostri derelinquentes eum averterunt facies suas a tabernaculo Domini et praebuerunt dorsum

6 our fathers have sinned and have done evil in the sight of the Lord our God, forsaking him; they turned their faces away from the Tabernacle of the Lord and offered their back.

7 cluserunt ostia quae erant in porticu et extinxerunt lucernas incensumque non adoleverunt et holocausta non obtulerunt in sanctuario Deo Israhel

7 they shut the doors that were in the portico and extinguished the lamps, and they did not burn incense, and they did not offer holocausts in the sanctuary to the God of Israel

8 concitatus est itaque furor Domini super Iudam et Hierusalem tradiditque eos in commotionem et in interitum et in sibilum sicut ipsi cernitis oculis vestris

8 Therefore the fury of the Lord was stirred up against Judah and Jerusalem, and he delivered them into commotion and into destruction and into a hissing, as you yourselves see with your eyes.

9 en corruerunt patres nostri gladiis filii nostri et filiae nostrae et coniuges captivae ductae sunt propter hoc scelus

9 behold, our fathers have fallen by the sword, our sons and our daughters and our wives have been led away captive on account of this crime

10 nunc igitur placet mihi ut ineamus foedus cum Domino Deo Israhel et avertat a nobis furorem irae suae

10 now therefore it pleases me that we enter into a covenant with the Lord God of Israel, and that he turn away from us the fury of his wrath

11 filii mi nolite neglegere vos elegit Dominus ut stetis coram eo et ministretis illi colatis eum et cremetis incensum

11 my sons do not be negligent the Lord has chosen you to stand before him and to minister to him to worship him and to burn incense

12 surrexerunt ergo Levitae Maath filius Amasiae et Iohel filius Azariae de filiis Caath porro de filiis Merari Cis filius Abdai et Azarias filius Iallelel de filiis autem Gersom Ioha filius Zemma et Eden filius Ioaha

12 therefore the Levites arose: Maath son of Amasiah, and Joel son of Azariah, of the sons of Kohath; moreover, of the sons of Merari, Kish son of Abdi and Azariah son of Jahlelel; and of the sons of Gershom, Joah son of Zimmah and Eden son of Joah

13 at vero de filiis Elisaphan Samri et Iahihel de filiis quoque Asaph Zaccharias et Mathanias

13 but indeed of the sons of Elizaphan, Shimri and Jeiel; and of the sons also of Asaph, Zechariah and Mattaniah

14 and also of the sons of Heman Jahiel and Shimei, and likewise of the sons of Jeduthun Shemaiah and Uzziel

15 congregaveruntque fratres suos et sanctificati sunt et ingressi iuxta mandatum regis et imperium Domini ut expiarent domum Dei

15 and they gathered their brothers and were sanctified, and entered according to the king’s mandate and the Lord’s imperium, to expiate the house of God

16 sacerdotes quoque ingressi templum Domini ut sanctificarent illud extulerunt omnem inmunditiam quam intro reppererant in vestibulum domus Domini quam tulerunt Levitae et asportaverunt ad torrentem Cedron foras

16 the priests also, having entered the Temple of the Lord to sanctify it, brought out all the uncleanness which they had found within into the vestibule of the house of the Lord, which the Levites took up and transported outside to the brook Kidron.

17 coeperunt autem prima die mensis primi mundare et in die octava eiusdem mensis ingressi sunt porticum templi Domini expiaveruntque templum diebus octo et in die sextadecima mensis eiusdem quod coeperant impleverunt

17 they began, moreover, on the first day of the first month to cleanse; and on the eighth day of the same month they entered the portico of the temple of the Lord, and they expiated the temple for eight days; and on the sixteenth day of the same month they completed what they had begun.

18 ingressi quoque sunt ad Ezechiam regem et dixerunt ei sanctificavimus omnem domum Domini et altare holocaustoseos vasaque eius necnon et mensam propositionis cum omnibus vasis suis

18 they also went in to King Hezekiah and said to him: we have sanctified all the house of the Lord, and the altar of holocaust, and its vessels, and also the table of the proposition with all its vessels.

19 cunctamque templi supellectilem quam polluerat rex Achaz in regno suo postquam praevaricatus est et ecce exposita sunt omnia coram altari Domini

19 and all the furnishings of the temple which King Ahaz had defiled in his reign after he transgressed, and behold, all are set out before the altar of the Lord

20 consurgensque diluculo Ezechias rex adunavit omnes principes civitatis et ascendit domum Domini

20 And rising at daybreak, King Hezekiah assembled all the princes of the city and went up to the house of the Lord.

21 obtuleruntque simul tauros septem arietes septem agnos septem et hircos septem pro peccato pro regno pro sanctuario pro Iuda dixit quoque sacerdotibus filiis Aaron ut offerrent super altare Domini

21 and they offered together seven bulls, seven rams, seven lambs, and seven he-goats for sin, for the kingdom, for the sanctuary, and for Judah; he also said to the priests, the sons of Aaron, to offer upon the altar of the Lord

22 mactaverunt igitur tauros et susceperunt sacerdotes sanguinem et fuderunt illud super altare mactaverunt etiam arietes et illorum sanguinem super altare fuderunt immolaverunt agnos et fuderunt super altare sanguinem

22 therefore they slaughtered the bulls, and the priests received the blood and poured it upon the altar; they also slaughtered the rams, and poured their blood upon the altar; they immolated the lambs, and poured the blood upon the altar

23 adplicaverunt hircos pro peccato coram rege et universa multitudine inposueruntque manus suas super eos

23 they presented the he-goats for the sin-offering before the king and the whole multitude, and they laid their hands upon them

24 et immolaverunt illos sacerdotes et asperserunt sanguinem eorum altari pro piaculo universi Israhelis pro omni quippe Israhel praeceperat rex ut holocaustum fieret et pro peccato

24 and the priests sacrificed them and sprinkled their blood on the altar for the expiation of all Israel; for indeed the king had commanded for all Israel that a holocaust be made, and a sin-offering.

25 constituit quoque Levitas in domo Domini cum cymbalis et psalteriis et citharis secundum dispositionem David et Gad videntis regis et Nathan prophetae siquidem Domini praeceptum fuit per manum prophetarum eius

25 he also appointed the Levites in the house of the Lord with cymbals and psalteries and citharas, according to the arrangement of David and of Gad the king’s seer and Nathan the prophet; for indeed it was the Lord’s command through the hand of his prophets.

26 steteruntque Levitae tenentes organa David et sacerdotes tubas

26 and the Levites stood holding David’s instruments and the priests the trumpets

27 et iussit Ezechias ut offerrent holocaustum super altare cumque offerrentur holocausta coeperunt laudes canere Domino et clangere tubis atque in diversis organis quae David rex Israhel reppererat concrepare

27 and Hezekiah commanded that they should offer the holocaust upon the altar; and when the holocausts were being offered, they began to sing praises to the Lord and to clang the trumpets, and to resound on the various instruments which David, king of Israel, had devised.

28 omni autem turba adorante cantores et hii qui tenebant tubas erant in officio suo donec conpleretur holocaustum

28 while the whole crowd was adoring, the cantors and those who were holding the trumpets were in their office until the burnt offering was completed

29 cumque finita esset oblatio incurvatus est rex et omnes qui erant cum eo et adoraverunt

29 and when the oblation was finished, the king bowed himself, and all who were with him, and they adored.

30 praecepitque Ezechias et principes Levitis ut laudarent Dominum sermonibus David et Asaph videntis qui laudaverunt eum magna laetitia et curvato genu adoraverunt

30 and Hezekiah and the princes commanded the Levites to praise the Lord with the words of David and of Asaph the seer, and they praised him with great joy, and with knee bent they adored.

31 Ezechias autem etiam haec addidit implestis manus vestras Domino accedite et offerte victimas et laudes in domo Domini obtulit ergo universa multitudo hostias et laudes et holocausta mente devota

31 But Hezekiah also added these things: you have filled your hands for the Lord; draw near and offer victims and praises in the house of the Lord. Therefore the whole multitude offered sacrifices and praises and holocausts with a devout mind.

32 porro numerus holocaustorum quae obtulit multitudo hic fuit tauros septuaginta arietes centum agnos ducentos

32 Moreover, the number of holocausts which the multitude offered was this: seventy bulls, one hundred rams, two hundred lambs.

33 sanctificaveruntque Domino boves sescentos et oves tria milia

33 and they sanctified to the Lord six hundred oxen and three thousand sheep

34 sacerdotes vero pauci erant nec poterant sufficere ut pelles holocaustorum detraherent unde et Levitae fratres eorum adiuverunt eos donec impleretur opus et sanctificarentur antistites Levitae quippe faciliori ritu sanctificantur quam sacerdotes

34 priests, however, were few, and they could not suffice to strip off the skins of the holocausts; whence also the Levites, their brethren, helped them until the work was completed and the prelates were sanctified—for the Levites are sanctified by a more facile rite than the priests.

35 fuerunt igitur holocausta plurima adipes pacificorum et libamina holocaustorum et conpletus est cultus domus Domini

35 therefore there were very many holocausts, the fats of the peace-offerings and the libations of the holocausts, and the cult/service of the house of the Lord was completed

36 laetatusque est Ezechias et omnis populus eo quod ministerium Domini esset expletum de repente quippe hoc fieri placuerat

36 And Hezekiah rejoiced, and all the people, because the ministry of the Lord had been completed; for it had been pleasing that this be done suddenly.

1 misit quoque Ezechias ad omnem Israhel et Iudam scripsitque epistulas ad Ephraim et Manassem ut venirent ad domum Domini in Hierusalem et facerent phase Domino Deo Israhel

1 Ezechias also sent to all Israel and Judah, and he wrote letters to Ephraim and Manasseh, that they should come to the house of the Lord in Jerusalem and keep the Passover to the Lord, the God of Israel.

2 inito ergo consilio regis et principum et universi coetus Hierusalem decreverunt ut facerent phase mense secundo

2 Therefore, after counsel was taken by the king and the princes and the whole assembly of Jerusalem, they decreed to keep the Passover in the second month.

3 non enim occurrerant facere in tempore suo quia sacerdotes qui possent sufficere sanctificati non fuerant et populus necdum congregatus erat in Hierusalem

3 for they had not been able to do it in its proper time, because the priests who could suffice had not been sanctified, and the people had not yet been congregated in Jerusalem

4 placuitque sermo regi et omni multitudini

4 and the proposal pleased the king and all the multitude

5 et decreverunt ut mitterent nuntios in universum Israhel de Bersabee usque Dan ut venirent et facerent phase Domino Deo Israhel in Hierusalem multi enim non fecerant sicut lege praescriptum est

5 and they decreed to send messengers through all Israel from Beersheba unto Dan, that they should come and keep the Passover to the Lord God of Israel in Jerusalem; for many had not done as prescribed by the law.

6 perrexeruntque cursores cum epistulis ex regis imperio et principum eius in universum Israhel et Iudam iuxta quod rex iusserat praedicantes filii Israhel revertimini ad Dominum Deum Abraham et Isaac et Israhel et revertetur ad reliquias quae effugerunt manum regis Assyriorum

6 And the couriers went forth with epistles by the command of the king and his princes into all Israel and Judah, according to what the king had ordered, proclaiming: Sons of Israel, return to the Lord God of Abraham and Isaac and Israel, and he will return to the remnant who have escaped from the hand of the king of the Assyrians.

7 nolite fieri sicut patres vestri et fratres qui recesserunt a Domino Deo patrum suorum et tradidit eos in interitum ut ipsi cernitis

7 do not become like your fathers and brothers, who receded from the Lord God of their fathers, and He handed them over into destruction, as you yourselves discern

8 nolite indurare cervices vestras sicut patres vestri tradite manus Domino et venite ad sanctuarium eius quod sanctificavit in aeternum servite Domino Deo patrum vestrorum et avertetur a vobis ira furoris eius

8 do not harden your necks like your fathers; give your hands to the Lord and come to his sanctuary which he has sanctified forever; serve the Lord, the God of your fathers, and the anger of his fury will be turned away from you

9 si enim vos reversi fueritis ad Dominum fratres vestri et filii habebunt misericordiam coram dominis suis qui illos duxere captivos et revertentur in terram hanc pius enim et clemens est Dominus Deus vester et non avertet faciem suam a vobis si reversi fueritis ad eum

9 for if indeed you will have returned to the Lord, your brothers and your sons will find mercy before their masters who led them captive, and they will return to this land; for the Lord your God is pious and clement, and he will not turn his face away from you, if you will have returned to him

10 igitur cursores pergebant velociter de civitate in civitatem per terram Ephraim et Manasse usque Zabulon illis inridentibus et subsannantibus eos

10 therefore the couriers were proceeding swiftly from city to city through the land of Ephraim and Manasseh as far as Zebulun, with those people deriding and scoffing at them

11 attamen quidam viri ex Aser et Manasse et Zabulon adquiescentes consilio venerunt Hierusalem

11 nevertheless certain men from Asher and Manasseh and Zebulun, acquiescing to the counsel, came to Jerusalem

12 in Iuda vero facta est manus Domini ut daret eis cor unum et facerent iuxta praeceptum regis et principum verbum Domini

12 But in Judah, the hand of the Lord was at work to give them one heart, and to do according to the precept of the king and the princes, by the word of the Lord.

13 congregatique sunt in Hierusalem populi multi ut facerent sollemnitatem azymorum in mense secundo

13 and many peoples were gathered together in Jerusalem to keep the solemnity of the Azymes in the second month

14 et surgentes destruxerunt altaria quae erant in Hierusalem atque universa in quibus idolis adolebatur incensum subvertentes proiecerunt in torrentem Cedron

14 and rising up they destroyed the altars that were in Jerusalem, and all the things on which incense was burned to idols; overturning them, they cast them into the torrent Cedron

15 immolaverunt autem phase quartadecima die mensis secundi sacerdotes quoque atque Levitae tandem sanctificati obtulerunt holocausta in domo Domini

15 and they sacrificed the Pasch on the fourteenth day of the second month; the priests also and the Levites, at length sanctified, offered holocausts in the house of the Lord

16 steteruntque in ordine suo iuxta dispositionem et legem Mosi hominis Dei sacerdotes vero suscipiebant effundendum sanguinem de manibus Levitarum

16 and they stood in their order according to the disposition and the law of Moses, the man of God; indeed the priests were receiving the blood to be poured out from the hands of the Levites

17 eo quod multa turba sanctificata non esset et idcirco Levitae immolarent phase his qui non occurrerant sanctificari Domino

17 because a great crowd had not been sanctified, and therefore the Levites were sacrificing the Passover for those who had not come forward to be sanctified to the Lord

18 magna etiam pars populi de Ephraim et Manasse et Isachar et Zabulon quae sanctificata non fuerat comedit phase non iuxta quod scriptum est et oravit pro eis Ezechias dicens Dominus bonus propitiabitur

18 also a great part of the people, from Ephraim and Manasseh and Issachar and Zebulun, who had not been sanctified, ate the Passover not according to what is written; and Hezekiah prayed for them, saying, May the good Lord be propitious.

19 cunctis qui in toto corde requirunt Dominum Deum patrum suorum et non inputabit eis quod minus sanctificati sunt

19 to all who with the whole heart seek the Lord, the God of their fathers; and he will not impute to them that they have been less sanctified.

20 quem exaudivit Dominus et placatus est populo

20 whom the Lord heard, and was placated for the people

21 feceruntque filii Israhel qui inventi sunt in Hierusalem sollemnitatem azymorum septem diebus in laetitia magna laudantes Dominum per singulos dies Levitae quoque et sacerdotes per organa quae suo officio congruebant

21 and the sons of Israel who were found in Jerusalem kept the solemnity of the Azymes for seven days in great rejoicing, praising the Lord on each single day, the Levites also and the priests with instruments which were congruent to their office

22 et locutus est Ezechias ad cor omnium Levitarum qui habebant intellegentiam bonam super Domino et comederunt septem diebus sollemnitatis immolantes victimas pacificorum et laudantes Dominum Deum patrum suorum

22 and Hezekiah spoke to the heart of all the Levites who had good understanding concerning the Lord, and they ate for seven days of the solemnity, sacrificing peace-offering victims and praising the Lord God of their fathers.

23 placuitque universae multitudini ut celebrarent etiam alios dies septem quod et fecerunt cum ingenti gaudio

23 and it pleased the whole multitude that they should celebrate also another seven days, which they did too with great joy

24 Ezechias enim rex Iuda praebuerat multitudini mille tauros et septem milia ovium principes vero dederant populo tauros mille et oves decem milia sanctificata ergo est sacerdotum plurima multitudo

24 For Hezekiah, king of Judah, had provided for the multitude 1,000 bulls and 7,000 sheep, but the princes had given to the people 1,000 bulls and 10,000 sheep; therefore a very great multitude of priests was sanctified.

25 et hilaritate perfusa omnis turba Iuda tam sacerdotum et Levitarum quam universae frequentiae quae venerat ex Israhel proselytorum quoque de terra Israhel et habitantium in Iuda

25 and all the crowd of Judah, both priests and Levites, as well as the whole concourse which had come from Israel, and also the proselytes from the land of Israel and those dwelling in Judah, was suffused with gladness.

26 factaque est grandis celebritas in Hierusalem qualis a diebus Salomonis filii David regis Israhel in ea urbe non fuerat

26 a great celebration came to be in Jerusalem, such as had not been in that city since the days of Solomon, son of David, king of Israel

27 surrexerunt autem sacerdotes atque Levitae benedicentes populo et exaudita est vox eorum pervenitque oratio in habitaculum sanctum caeli

27 then the priests and the Levites rose, blessing the people, and their voice was heard, and their prayer reached the holy habitation of heaven

1 cumque haec fuissent rite celebrata egressus est omnis Israhel qui inventus fuerat in urbibus Iuda et fregerunt simulacra succideruntque lucos demoliti sunt excelsa et altaria destruxerunt non solum de universo Iuda et Beniamin sed de Ephraim quoque et Manasse donec penitus everterent reversique sunt omnes filii Israhel in possessiones et civitates suas

1 and when these things had been duly celebrated, all Israel who had been found in the cities of Judah went out, and they broke the images, and cut down the groves, and demolished the high places and destroyed the altars, not only from all Judah and Benjamin, but also from Ephraim and Manasseh, until they had utterly overthrown them; and all the sons of Israel returned to their possessions and to their cities.

2 Ezechias vero constituit turmas sacerdotales et leviticas per divisiones suas unumquemque in officio proprio tam sacerdotum videlicet quam Levitarum ad holocausta et pacifica ut ministrarent et confiterentur canerentque in portis castrorum Domini

2 But Hezekiah appointed the priestly and Levitical companies by their divisions, each one in his own proper office, namely both of the priests and of the Levites, for holocausts and peace-offerings, that they might minister and give thanks and sing at the gates of the camps of the Lord.

3 pars autem regis erat ut de propria eius substantia offerretur holocaustum mane semper et vespere sabbatis quoque et kalendis et sollemnitatibus ceteris sicut scriptum est in lege Mosi

3 But the king’s portion was that, from his own substance, the holocaust be offered every morning and evening, on the Sabbaths also and at the Kalends and the other solemnities, as it is written in the law of Moses.

4 praecepit etiam populo habitantium Hierusalem ut darent partes sacerdotibus et Levitis et possent vacare legi Domini

4 He also commanded the people dwelling in Jerusalem to give portions to the priests and the Levites, that they might be free to attend to the law of the Lord.

5 quod cum percrebruisset in auribus multitudinis plurimas obtulere primitias filii Israhel frumenti vini et olei mellis quoque et omnium quae gignit humus decimas obtulerunt

5 when this had spread abroad into the ears of the multitude, the sons of Israel offered very many firstfruits of grain, wine, and oil, and also of honey; and they offered tithes of all that the soil produces

6 sed et filii Israhel et Iuda qui habitabant in urbibus Iuda obtulerunt decimas boum et ovium decimasque sanctorum quae voverant Domino Deo suo atque universa portantes fecerunt acervos plurimos

6 and also the sons of Israel and Judah who were dwelling in the cities of Judah offered tithes of oxen and of sheep, and tithes also of the holy things which they had vowed to the Lord their God; and carrying all, they made very many heaps.

7 mense tertio coeperunt acervorum iacere fundamenta et mense septimo conpleverunt eos

7 in the third month they began to lay the foundations of the heaps, and in the seventh month they completed them

8 cumque ingressi fuissent Ezechias et principes eius viderunt acervos et benedixerunt Domino ac populo Israhel

8 and when Hezekiah and his princes had entered, they saw the heaps and blessed the Lord and the people of Israel

9 interrogavitque Ezechias sacerdotes et Levitas cur ita iacerent acervi

9 and Hezekiah interrogated the priests and the Levites why the heaps lay thus

10 respondit illi Azarias sacerdos primus de stirpe Sadoc dicens ex quo coeperunt offerri primitiae in domo Domini comedimus et saturati sumus remanseruntque plurima eo quod benedixerit Dominus populo suo reliquiarum autem copia est ista quam cernis

10 Azariah, the chief priest of the stock of Zadok, answered him, saying: Since the first-fruits began to be offered in the house of the Lord, we have eaten and been satiated, and very many things have remained, because the Lord has blessed his people; and this abundance of leftovers is what you see.

11 praecepit igitur Ezechias ut praepararent horrea in domo Domini quod cum fecissent

11 therefore Hezekiah commanded that they prepare storehouses in the house of the Lord, which, when they had done,

12 intulerunt tam primitias quam decimas et quaecumque voverant fideliter fuit autem praefectus eorum Chonenias Levita et Semei frater eius secundus

12 they brought in both the first-fruits and the tithes, and whatever they had vowed, faithfully; moreover the prefect over them was Chonenias the Levite, and Semei his brother was second

13 post quem Ieihel et Azazias et Naath et Asahel et Ierimoth Iozabath quoque et Helihel et Iesmachias et Maath et Banaias praepositi sub manibus Choneniae et Semei fratris eius ex imperio Ezechiae regis et Azariae pontificis domus Domini ad quos omnia pertinebant

13 after whom Jeiel and Azazias and Naath and Asahel and Jerimoth, Jozabath also and Helihel and Ismachias and Maath and Benaiah, were prefects under the hand of Cononiah and Shimei his brother, by the command of King Hezekiah and Azariah, pontiff of the house of the Lord, to whom all things pertained

14 Core vero filius Iemna Levites et ianitor orientalis portae praepositus erat his quae sponte offerebantur Domino primitiisque et consecratis in sancta sanctorum

14 But Core, the son of Iemna, a Levite and doorkeeper of the eastern gate, was appointed over the things which were offered freely to the Lord, and the first-fruits and the consecrated things in the Holy of Holies.

15 et sub cura eius Eden et Meniamin Hiesue et Sameias Amarias quoque et Sechenias in civitatibus sacerdotum ut fideliter distribuerent fratribus suis partes minoribus atque maioribus

15 and under his care Eden and Meniamin, Hiesue and Sameias, Amarias also and Sechenias, in the cities of the priests, so that they might faithfully distribute to their brothers portions, to the lesser and to the greater

16 exceptis maribus ab annis tribus et supra cunctis qui ingrediebantur templum Domini et quicquid per dies singulos conducebat in ministerio atque observationibus iuxta divisiones suas

16 besides to the males from three years and above, to all who entered the temple of the Lord, and whatever on single days was requisite in the ministry and observances according to their divisions

17 sacerdotibus per familias et Levitis a vicesimo anno et supra per ordines et turmas suas

17 to the priests by families, and to the Levites from the twentieth year and above, according to their orders and their divisions

18 universaeque multitudini tam uxoribus quam liberis eorum utriusque sexus fideliter cibi de his quae sanctificata fuerant praebebantur

18 and to the whole multitude, both to their wives and to their children of either sex, rations of food from the things that had been sanctified were faithfully provided

19 sed et filiorum Aaron per agros et suburbana urbium singularum dispositi erant viri qui partes distribuerent universo sexui masculino de sacerdotibus et Levitis

19 but also, of the sons of Aaron, there were men posted through the fields and the suburbs of each city, who would distribute portions to the entire male sex of the priests and of the Levites

20 fecit ergo Ezechias universa quae diximus in omni Iuda operatusque est bonum et rectum et verum coram Domino Deo suo

20 therefore Hezekiah did all the things which we have said in all Judah, and he wrought what was good and right and true before the Lord his God

21 in universa cultura ministerii domus Domini iuxta legem et caerimonias volens requirere Deum suum in toto corde suo fecitque et prosperatus est

21 in all the work of the ministry of the house of the Lord, according to the law and the ceremonies, willing to seek his God with his whole heart, he acted, and he prospered.

1 post quae et huiuscemodi veritatem venit Sennacherib rex Assyriorum et ingressus Iudam obsedit civitates munitas volens eas capere

1 after these things and this sort of fidelity, Sennacherib king of the Assyrians came, and having entered Judah he besieged the fortified cities, wishing to capture them

2 quod cum vidisset Ezechias venisse scilicet Sennacherib et totum belli impetum verti contra Hierusalem

2 when Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib had come, namely, and that the whole impetus of war was being turned against Jerusalem

3 inito cum principibus consilio virisque fortissimis ut obturarent capita fontium quae erant extra urbem et hoc omnium decernente sententia

3 after counsel had been taken with the princes and the most valiant men to stop up the heads of the fountains which were outside the city, and this by the judgment of all

4 congregavit plurimam multitudinem et obturaverunt cunctos fontes et rivum qui fluebat in medio terrae dicentes ne veniant reges Assyriorum et inveniant aquarum abundantiam

4 he gathered a very great multitude, and they stopped up all the fountains and the stream which was flowing in the midst of the land, saying: lest the kings of the Assyrians come and find an abundance of waters

5 aedificavit quoque agens industrie omnem murum qui fuerat dissipatus et extruxit turres desuper et forinsecus alterum murum instauravitque Mello in civitate David et fecit universi generis armaturam et clypeos

5 he also built, acting industriously, the whole wall that had been broken down, and erected towers on top, and on the outside he built another wall, and he restored the Mello in the city of David, and made armament of every kind and shields

6 constituitque principes bellatorum in exercitu et convocavit universos in platea portae civitatis ac locutus est ad cor eorum dicens

6 and he appointed leaders of the warriors in the army, and he summoned all in the square of the gate of the city, and spoke to their heart, saying

7 viriliter agite et confortamini nolite timere nec paveatis regem Assyriorum et universam multitudinem quae est cum eo multo enim plures nobiscum sunt quam cum illo

7 act manfully and be strengthened; do not fear nor be terrified at the king of the Assyrians and the whole multitude that is with him, for far more are with us than with him

8 cum illo est brachium carneum nobiscum Dominus Deus noster qui auxiliator est noster pugnatque pro nobis confortatusque est populus huiuscemodi verbis Ezechiae regis Iuda

8 with him is an arm of flesh; with us is the Lord our God, who is our helper and fights for us; and the people were strengthened by such words of Ezechias, king of Judah

9 quae postquam gesta sunt misit Sennacherib rex Assyriorum servos suos Hierusalem ipse enim cum universo exercitu obsidebat Lachis ad Ezechiam regem Iuda et ad omnem populum qui erat in urbe dicens

9 after these things had been done, Sennacherib king of the Assyrians sent his servants to Jerusalem (for he himself with the entire army was besieging Lachish) to Hezekiah king of Judah and to all the people who were in the city, saying

10 haec dicit Sennacherib rex Assyriorum in quo habentes fiduciam sedetis obsessi in Hierusalem

10 Thus says Sennacherib, king of the Assyrians: In whom, having confidence, do you sit besieged in Jerusalem?

11 num Ezechias decipit vos ut tradat morti in fame et siti adfirmans quod Dominus Deus vester liberet vos de manu regis Assyriorum

11 Is Hezekiah deceiving you, to hand you over to death by famine and thirst, asserting that the Lord your God will deliver you from the hand of the king of Assyria?

12 numquid non iste est Ezechias qui destruxit excelsa illius et altaria et praecepit Iudae et Hierusalem dicens coram altari uno adorabitis et in ipso conburetis incensum

12 is this not that Hezekiah who destroyed his high places and his altars, and commanded Judah and Jerusalem, saying, Before one altar you shall worship, and on it you shall burn incense?

13 an ignoratis quae ego fecerim et patres mei cunctis terrarum populis numquid praevaluerunt dii gentium omniumque terrarum liberare regionem suam de manu mea

13 Or do you not know what I and my fathers have done to all the peoples of the lands? Have the gods of the nations of all the lands prevailed to liberate their region from my hand?

14 quis est de universis diis gentium quas vastaverunt patres mei qui potuerit eruere populum suum de manu mea ut possit etiam Deus vester eruere vos de hac manu

14 who is there among all the gods of the nations, which my fathers have laid waste, who was able to deliver his people out of my hand, that your God should also be able to deliver you from this hand

15 non vos ergo decipiat Ezechias nec vana persuasione deludat neque credatis ei si enim nullus potuit deus cunctarum gentium atque regnorum liberare populum suum de manu mea et de manu patrum meorum consequenter nec Deus vester poterit eruere vos de hac manu

15 therefore let not Ezechias deceive you, nor delude you with vain persuasion, nor should you believe him; for if no god of all the nations and kingdoms has been able to free his people from my hand and from the hand of my fathers, consequently neither will your God be able to snatch you out from this hand

16 sed et alia multa locuti sunt servi eius contra Dominum Deum et contra Ezechiam servum eius

16 but even many other things did his servants speak against the Lord God and against Hezekiah, his servant

17 epistulas quoque scripsit plenas blasphemiae in Dominum Deum Israhel et locutus est adversus eum sicut dii gentium ceterarum non potuerunt liberare populos suos de manu mea sic et Deus Ezechiae eruere non poterit populum suum de manu ista

17 he also wrote letters full of blasphemy against the Lord God of Israel, and he spoke against him: just as the gods of the other nations were not able to liberate their peoples from my hand, so too the God of Hezekiah will not be able to deliver his people from this hand.

18 insuper et clamore magno lingua iudaica contra populum qui sedebat in muris Hierusalem personabat ut terreret eos et caperet civitatem

18 moreover, with great clamor in the Judean language he resounded against the people who were sitting on the walls of Jerusalem, in order to terrify them and to capture the city

19 locutusque est contra Deum Hierusalem sicut adversum deos populorum terrae opera manuum hominum

19 and he spoke against the God of Jerusalem, just as against the gods of the peoples of the earth, works of the hands of men

20 oraverunt igitur Ezechias rex et Esaias filius Amos prophetes adversum hanc blasphemiam ac vociferati sunt usque in caelum

20 therefore King Hezekiah and Isaiah, son of Amoz, the prophet, prayed against this blasphemy, and vociferated unto heaven

21 et misit Dominus angelum qui percussit omnem virum robustum et bellatorem et principem exercitus regis Assyriorum reversusque est cum ignominia in terram suam cumque ingressus esset domum dei sui filii qui egressi fuerant de utero eius interfecerunt eum gladio

21 and the Lord sent an angel who struck down every strong man and warrior and the leader of the army of the king of the Assyrians; and he returned with ignominy to his own land, and when he had entered the house of his god, his sons, who had come forth from his womb, slew him with the sword

22 salvavitque Dominus Ezechiam et habitatores Hierusalem de manu Sennacherib regis Assyriorum et de manu omnium et praestitit ei quietem per circuitum

22 and the Lord saved Hezekiah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem from the hand of Sennacherib, king of the Assyrians, and from the hand of all, and he granted him quiet all around

23 multi etiam deferebant hostias et sacrificia Domino Hierusalem et munera Ezechiae regi Iuda qui exaltatus est post haec coram cunctis gentibus

23 many also were bringing offerings and sacrifices to the Lord in Jerusalem, and gifts to Hezekiah king of Judah, who was exalted after these things before all the nations

24 in diebus illis aegrotavit Ezechias usque ad mortem et oravit Dominum exaudivitque eum et dedit ei signum

24 in those days Hezekiah fell sick unto death, and he prayed to the Lord, and he hearkened to him and gave him a sign

25 sed non iuxta beneficia quae acceperat retribuit quia elevatum est cor eius et facta est contra eum ira et contra Iudam ac Hierusalem

25 but he did not repay according to the benefits which he had received, because his heart was exalted; and wrath came against him, and against Judah and Jerusalem

26 humiliatusque est postea eo quod exaltatum fuisset cor eius tam ipse quam habitatores Hierusalem et idcirco non venit super eos ira Domini in diebus Ezechiae

26 and he was humbled afterward, because his heart had been exalted, both he himself and the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and therefore the wrath of the Lord did not come upon them in the days of Hezekiah

27 fuit autem Ezechias dives et inclitus valde et thesauros sibi plurimos congregavit argenti auri et lapidis pretiosi aromatum et armorum universi generis et vasorum magni pretii

27 but Hezekiah was rich and very renowned, and he gathered for himself very many treasures: of silver, gold, and precious stones, of aromatics, and of weapons of every kind, and of vessels of great price

28 apothecas quoque frumenti vini et olei et praesepia omnium iumentorum caulasque pecoribus

28 storehouses also for grain, wine, and oil, and mangers for all beasts of burden, and folds for the flocks

29 et urbes exaedificavit habebat quippe greges ovium et armentorum innumerabiles eo quod dedisset ei Dominus substantiam multam nimis

29 and he built up cities, for he had flocks of sheep and herds innumerable, because the Lord had given him exceedingly much substance

30 ipse est Ezechias qui obturavit superiorem fontem aquarum Gion et avertit eas subter ad occidentem urbis David in omnibus operibus suis fecit prospere quae voluit

30 he is Hezekiah who stopped up the upper spring of the waters of Gihon and diverted them beneath toward the west of the City of David; in all his works he did successfully what he wished

31 attamen in legatione principum Babylonis qui missi fuerant ad eum ut interrogarent de portento quod acciderat super terram dereliquit eum Deus ut temptaretur et nota fierent omnia quae erant in corde eius

31 Nevertheless, in the legation of the princes of Babylon, who had been sent to him to inquire concerning the portent that had happened upon the land, God left him so that he might be tested, and that all the things which were in his heart might be made known.

32 reliqua autem sermonum Ezechiae et misericordiarum eius scripta sunt in visione Esaiae filii Amos prophetae et in libro regum Iuda et Israhel

32 Now the rest of the words of Hezekiah and his mercies are written in the vision of Isaiah, son of Amoz, the prophet, and in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel.

33 dormivitque Ezechias cum patribus suis et sepelierunt eum supra sepulchra filiorum David et celebravit eius exequias universus Iuda et omnes habitatores Hierusalem regnavitque Manasses filius eius pro eo

33 And Hezekiah slept with his fathers, and they buried him above the sepulchres of the sons of David, and all Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem celebrated his obsequies, and Manasseh his son reigned in his stead.

1 Manasseh was twelve years old when he began to reign, and he reigned fifty-five years in Jerusalem.

2 fecit autem malum coram Domino iuxta abominationes gentium quas subvertit Dominus coram filiis Israhel

2 moreover, he did evil before the Lord according to the abominations of the nations which the Lord subverted before the sons of Israel

3 et conversus instauravit excelsa quae demolitus fuerat Ezechias pater eius construxitque aras Baalim et fecit lucos et adoravit omnem militiam caeli et coluit eam

3 and, turning back, he restored the high places which Hezekiah his father had demolished, and he constructed altars to the Baals and made groves, and he adored all the host of heaven and served it

4 aedificavit quoque altaria in domo Domini de qua dixerat Dominus in Hierusalem erit nomen meum in aeternum

4 He also built altars in the house of the Lord, concerning which the Lord had said, “In Jerusalem shall my name be forever.”

5 aedificavit autem ea cuncto exercitui caeli in duobus atriis domus Domini

5 and he built them for the whole host of heaven in the two courts of the house of the Lord

6 transireque fecit filios suos per ignem in valle Benennon observabat somnia sectabatur auguria maleficis artibus inserviebat habebat secum magos et incantatores multaque mala operatus est coram Domino ut inritaret eum

6 and he made his sons pass through the fire in the Valley of Ben-Hinnom; he observed dreams, he pursued auguries, he was devoted to malefic arts; he had with him magi and incantators; and he did many evils before the Lord so as to provoke Him.

7 sculptile quoque et conflatile signum posuit in domo Domini de qua locutus est Dominus ad David et ad Salomonem filium eius dicens in domo hac et in Hierusalem quam elegi de cunctis tribubus Israhel ponam nomen meum in sempiternum

7 He also set up a sculpted and cast image in the house of the Lord, concerning which the Lord spoke to David and to Solomon his son, saying, In this house and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, I will place my name forever.

8 et movere non faciam pedem Israhel de terra quam tradidi patribus eorum ita dumtaxat si custodierint facere quae praecepi eis cunctamque legem et caerimonias atque iudicia per manum Mosi

8 and I will not cause the foot of Israel to move from the land which I delivered to their fathers, only provided that they keep to do what I have commanded them, and the whole law and the ceremonies and the judgments by the hand of Moses

9 igitur Manasses seduxit Iudam et habitatores Hierusalem ut facerent malum super omnes gentes quas subverterat Dominus a facie filiorum Israhel

9 therefore Manasseh seduced Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to do evil beyond all the nations whom the Lord had subverted from before the face of the sons of Israel

10 locutusque est Dominus ad eum et ad populum illius et adtendere noluerunt

10 and the Lord spoke to him and to his people, and they were unwilling to attend.

11 idcirco superinduxit eis principes exercitus regis Assyriorum ceperuntque Manassen et vinctum catenis atque conpedibus duxerunt Babylonem

11 therefore he brought upon them the commanders of the army of the king of Assyria; and they seized Manasseh, and, bound with chains and fetters, they led him to Babylon

12 qui postquam coangustatus est oravit Dominum Deum suum et egit paenitentiam valde coram Deo patrum suorum

12 who, after he was in anguish, prayed to the Lord his God and did penitence greatly before the God of his fathers

13 deprecatusque est eum et obsecravit intente et exaudivit orationem eius reduxitque eum Hierusalem in regnum suum et cognovit Manasses quod Dominus ipse esset Deus

13 and he entreated him and besought him intently, and He hearkened to his prayer and brought him back to Jerusalem into his kingdom; and Manasses knew that the Lord Himself was God.

14 post haec aedificavit murum extra civitatem David ad occidentem Gion in convalle ab introitu portae Piscium per circuitum usque ad Ophel et exaltavit illum vehementer constituitque principes exercitus in cunctis civitatibus Iuda munitis

14 after these things he built a wall outside the City of David to the west of Gion in the valley, from the entrance of the Fish Gate around as far as Ophel, and he exalted it exceedingly, and he constituted chiefs of the army in all the fortified cities of Judah.

15 et abstulit deos alienos et simulacrum de domo Domini aras quoque quas fecerat in monte domus Domini et in Hierusalem et proiecit omnia extra urbem

15 and he took away the alien gods and the simulacrum from the house of the Lord the altars also which he had made on the mount of the house of the Lord and in Jerusalem and he threw them all outside the city

16 porro instauravit altare Domini et immolavit super illud victimas et pacifica et laudem praecepitque Iudae ut serviret Domino Deo Israhel

16 moreover he restored the altar of the Lord and immolated upon it victims and peace-offerings and praise, and he commanded Judah to serve the Lord, the God of Israel

17 attamen adhuc populus immolabat in excelsis Domino Deo suo

17 Nevertheless, the people were still sacrificing on the high places to the Lord their God.

18 reliqua autem gestorum Manasse et obsecratio eius ad Deum suum verba quoque videntium qui loquebantur ad eum in nomine Domini Dei Israhel continentur in sermonibus regum Israhel

18 moreover the rest of the acts of Manasseh and his supplication to his God, and likewise the words of the seers who spoke to him in the name of the Lord God of Israel, are contained in the words of the kings of Israel

19 oratio quoque eius et exauditio et cuncta peccata atque contemptus loca etiam in quibus aedificavit excelsa et fecit lucos et statuas antequam ageret paenitentiam scripta sunt in sermonibus Ozai

19 his prayer also and his being-heard, and all the sins and the contempt, the places also in which he built high places and made groves and statues, before he did penitence, are written in the words of Ozai

20 dormivit ergo Manasses cum patribus suis et sepelierunt eum in domo sua regnavitque pro eo filius eius Amon

20 Therefore Manasseh slept with his fathers, and they buried him in his house; and his son Amon reigned in his place.

21 viginti duo annorum erat Amon cum regnare coepisset et duobus annis regnavit in Hierusalem

21 Amon was twenty-two years old when he began to reign, and he reigned two years in Jerusalem.

22 fecitque malum in conspectu Domini sicut fecerat Manasses pater eius et cunctis idolis quae Manasses fuerat fabricatus immolavit atque servivit

22 and he did evil in the sight of the Lord, just as Manasseh his father had done, and to all the idols which Manasseh had fabricated he immolated and served.

23 et non est reveritus faciem Domini sicut reveritus est Manasses pater eius et multo maiora deliquit

23 and he did not revere the face of the Lord as Manasseh his father had revered it, and he committed much greater delinquencies

24 cumque coniurassent adversus eum servi sui interfecerunt eum in domo sua

24 and when his own servants had conspired against him, they killed him in his house

25 porro reliqua populi multitudo caesis his qui Amon percusserant constituit regem Iosiam filium eius pro eo

25 but the remaining multitude of the people, after slaying those who had struck down Amon, appointed Josiah his son as king in his stead

1 Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned thirty-one years in Jerusalem

2 fecitque quod erat rectum in conspectu Domini et ambulavit in viis David patris sui non declinavit neque ad dexteram neque ad sinistram

2 and he did what was right in the sight of the Lord and walked in the ways of David his father he did not turn aside to the right nor to the left

3 octavo autem anno regni sui cum adhuc esset puer coepit quaerere Deum patris sui David et duodecimo anno postquam coeperat mundavit Iudam et Hierusalem ab excelsis et lucis simulacrisque et sculptilibus

3 moreover, in the 8th year of his reign, while he was still a boy, he began to seek the God of his father David; and in the 12th year after he had begun, he cleansed Judah and Jerusalem from the high places, and the sacred groves, and the simulacra, and the sculptile images.

4 destruxeruntque coram eo aras Baalim et simulacra quae superposita fuerant demoliti sunt lucos etiam et sculptilia succidit atque comminuit et super tumulos eorum qui eis immolare consueverant fragmenta dispersit

4 and they destroyed before him the altars of the Baals, and the simulacra which had been set upon them they demolished; the groves also and the sculptile images he cut down and crushed, and over the tumuli of those who were accustomed to immolate to them he scattered the fragments

5 ossa praeterea sacerdotum conbusit in altaribus idolorum mundavitque Iudam et Hierusalem

5 he also burned the bones of the priests upon the altars of the idols, and he cleansed Judah and Jerusalem

6 sed et in urbibus Manasse et Ephraim et Symeon usque Nepthalim cuncta subvertit

6 but also in the cities of Manasseh and Ephraim and Simeon up to Naphtali he subverted all things

7 cumque altaria dissipasset et lucos et sculptilia contrivisset in frusta cunctaque delubra demolitus esset de universa terra Israhel reversus est Hierusalem

7 and when he had scattered the altars and had crushed the groves and the sculptile images into pieces, and had demolished all the shrines from the whole land of Israel, he returned to Jerusalem

8 igitur anno octavodecimo regni sui mundata iam terra et templo Domini misit Saphan filium Eseliae et Maasiam principem civitatis et Ioha filium Ioachaz a commentariis ut instaurarent domum Domini Dei sui

8 therefore in the eighteenth year of his reign, the land and the temple of the Lord now cleansed, he sent Saphan son of Eselias, and Maasia, the prince of the city, and Ioha son of Ioachaz, from the commentaries (records), to restore the house of the Lord their God

9 qui venerunt ad Helciam sacerdotem magnum acceptamque ab eo pecuniam quae inlata fuerat in domum Domini et quam congregaverant Levitae ianitores de Manasse et Ephraim et universis reliquiis Israhel ab omni quoque Iuda et Beniamin et habitatoribus Hierusalem

9 who came to Helcias the high priest, and received from him the money that had been brought into the house of the Lord, and which the Levites, the doorkeepers, had gathered from Manasse and Ephraim and all the remnant of Israel, and from all Judah and Benjamin, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem

10 tradiderunt in manibus eorum qui praeerant operariis in domo Domini ut instaurarent templum et infirma quaeque sarcirent

10 they delivered it into the hands of those who were presiding over the workmen in the house of the Lord, that they might restore the temple and mend whatever was infirm.

11 at illi dederunt eam artificibus et cementariis ut emerent lapides de lapidicinis et ligna ad commissuras aedificii et ad contignationem domorum quas destruxerant reges Iuda

11 but they gave it to the artificers and the masons, in order that they might buy stones from the quarries and timber for the commissures of the building and for the flooring of the houses which the kings of Judah had destroyed

12 qui fideliter cuncta faciebant erant autem praepositi operantium Iaath et Abdias de filiis Merari Zaccharias et Mosollam de filiis Caath qui urguebant opus omnes Levitae scientes organis canere

12 who were doing all things faithfully; and the overseers of the workers were Jahath and Obadiah of the sons of Merari, and Zechariah and Meshullam of the sons of Kohath, who were urging the work forward— all the Levites skilled in playing instruments.

13 super eos vero qui ad varios usus onera portabant erant scribae et magistri de Levitis ianitores

13 but over those who were carrying burdens for various uses were scribes and masters; of the Levites, gatekeepers.

14 cumque efferrent pecuniam quae inlata fuerat in templum Domini repperit Helcias sacerdos librum legis Domini per manum Mosi

14 and when they were bringing out the money that had been brought into the temple of the Lord, Helcias the priest found the book of the law of the Lord by the hand of Moses

15 et ait ad Saphan scribam librum legis inveni in domo Domini et tradidit ei

15 and he said to Shaphan the scribe, I have found the book of the Law in the house of the Lord; and he delivered it to him

16 at ille intulit volumen ad regem et nuntiavit ei dicens omnia quae dedisti in manu servorum tuorum ecce conplentur

16 and he brought in the volume to the king and announced to him, saying, “Behold, all the things which you have given into the hand of your servants are being fulfilled.”

17 argentum quod reppertum est in domo Domini conflaverunt datumque est praefectis artificum et diversa opera fabricantium

17 the silver that has been found in the house of the Lord they have melted down, and it has been given to the prefects of the artificers and to those fabricating diverse works

18 praeterea tradidit mihi Helcias sacerdos hunc librum quem cum rege praesente recitasset

18 moreover Hilkiah the priest delivered to me this book, which, with the king present, he recited

19 audissetque ille verba legis scidit vestimenta sua

19 and when he had heard the words of the law, he tore his garments.

20 et praecepit Helciae et Ahicam filio Saphan et Abdon filio Micha Saphan quoque scribae et Asaiae servo regis dicens

20 and he commanded Helciae and Ahicam the son of Saphan and Abdon the son of Micha, Shaphan also the scribe, and Asaiae the king’s servant, saying

21 ite et orate Dominum pro me et pro reliquiis Israhel et Iuda super universis sermonibus libri istius qui reppertus est magnus enim furor Domini stillavit super nos eo quod non custodierint patres nostri verba Domini ut facerent omnia quae scripta sunt in isto volumine

21 go and pray to the Lord for me and for the remnant of Israel and Judah concerning all the words of this book which has been found; for great is the wrath of the Lord that has dripped/poured down upon us, because our fathers have not kept the words of the Lord, to do all that is written in this volume

22 abiit igitur Helcias et hii qui simul a rege missi fuerant ad Holdan propheten uxorem Sellum filii Thecuath filii Hasra custodis vestium quae habitabat Hierusalem in secunda et locuti sunt ei verba quae supra narravimus

22 therefore Hilkiah went, and those who together had been sent by the king, to Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum son of Thecuath, son of Hasrah, the keeper of the garments, who was dwelling in Jerusalem in the Second [Quarter], and they spoke to her the words which we have narrated above

23 at illa respondit eis haec dicit Dominus Deus Israhel dicite viro qui misit vos ad me

23 but she answered them: thus says the Lord God of Israel, say to the man who sent you to me

24 thus says the Lord: behold, I will bring evils upon this place and upon its inhabitants, and all the maledictions that are written in this book which they have read before the king of Judah

25 because they have forsaken me and have sacrificed to alien gods, so as to provoke me to ire in all the works of their hands; therefore my fury has been poured out upon this place, and it will not be extinguished

26 ad regem autem Iuda qui misit vos pro Domino deprecando sic loquimini haec dicit Dominus Deus Israhel quoniam audisti verba voluminis

26 but to the king of Judah who sent you to implore the Lord, thus you shall speak: thus says the Lord God of Israel: because you have heard the words of the volume

27 atque emollitum est cor tuum et humiliatus es in conspectu Dei super his quae dicta sunt contra locum hunc et habitatores Hierusalem reveritusque faciem meam scidisti vestimenta tua et flevisti coram me ego quoque exaudivi te dicit Dominus

27 and your heart has been softened, and you have been humbled in the sight of God over the things that have been spoken against this place and the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and, revering my face, you tore your garments and wept before me; I also have heard you, says the Lord.

28 iam enim colligam te ad patres tuos et infereris in sepulchrum tuum in pace nec videbunt oculi tui omne malum quod ego inducturus sum super locum istum et super habitatores eius rettulerunt itaque regi cuncta quae dixerat

28 For now indeed I will gather you to your fathers, and you shall be borne into your sepulcher in peace; and your eyes shall not see all the evil that I am going to bring upon this place and upon its inhabitants. They therefore reported to the king all the things that he had said.

29 at ille convocatis universis maioribus natu Iuda et Hierusalem

29 but he, having called together all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem

30 ascendit domum Domini unaque omnes viri Iuda et habitatores Hierusalem sacerdotes et Levitae et cunctus populus a minimo usque ad maximum quibus audientibus in domo Domini legit rex omnia verba voluminis

30 he went up to the house of the Lord, and together went all the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the priests and the Levites, and all the people from the least unto the greatest, and with them listening in the house of the Lord the king read all the words of the volume

31 et stans in tribunali suo percussit foedus coram Domino ut ambularet post eum et custodiret praecepta et testimonia et iustificationes eius in toto corde suo et in tota anima sua faceretque quae scripta sunt in volumine illo quem legerat

31 and standing on his tribunal he struck a covenant before the Lord, to walk after him and to keep his precepts and testimonies and justifications with all his heart and with all his soul, and to do the things which are written in that volume which he had read

32 adiuravit quoque super hoc omnes qui repperti fuerant in Hierusalem et Beniamin et fecerunt habitatores Hierusalem iuxta pactum Domini Dei patrum suorum

32 He also adjured upon this all who had been found in Jerusalem and Benjamin, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem did according to the covenant of the Lord, the God of their fathers.

33 abstulit ergo Iosias cunctas abominationes de universis regionibus filiorum Israhel et fecit omnes qui residui erant in Israhel servire Domino Deo suo cunctis diebus eius non recesserunt a Domino Deo patrum suorum

33 therefore Josiah removed all the abominations from all the regions of the sons of Israel, and he made all who were left in Israel serve the Lord their God; all his days they did not depart from the Lord, the God of their fathers

1 Josiah kept the Passover to the Lord in Jerusalem, which was immolated on the fourteenth day of the first month

2 et constituit sacerdotes in officiis suis hortatusque est eos ut ministrarent in domo Domini

2 and he appointed the priests in their offices and exhorted them to minister in the house of the Lord

3 Levitis quoque ad quorum eruditionem omnis Israhel sanctificabatur Domino locutus est ponite arcam in sanctuario templi quod aedificavit Salomon filius David rex Israhel nequaquam enim eam ultra portabitis nunc autem ministrate Domino Deo vestro et populo eius Israhel

3 He also spoke to the Levites, at whose instruction all Israel was sanctified to the Lord: set the ark in the sanctuary of the temple which Solomon, son of David, king of Israel, built; for you shall carry it no longer; now, however, minister to the Lord your God and to his people Israel.

4 et praeparate vos per domos et cognationes vestras in divisionibus singulorum sicut praecepit David rex Israhel et descripsit Salomon filius eius

4 and prepare yourselves by your houses and your clans, in the divisions of each, just as David, king of Israel, commanded, and Solomon his son set forth

6 et sanctificati immolate phase fratres etiam vestros ut possint iuxta verba quae locutus est Dominus in manu Mosi facere praeparate

6 and, having been sanctified, immolate the Passover; prepare also your brothers, that they may be able to do according to the words which the Lord spoke by the hand of Moses.

7 dedit praeterea Iosias omni populo qui ibi fuerat inventus in sollemnitatem phase agnos et hedos de gregibus et reliqui pecoris triginta milia boumque tria milia haec de regis universa substantia

7 moreover Josiah gave to all the people who had been found there, for the solemnity of the Passover, lambs and kids from the flocks and of the rest of the livestock, 30,000, and oxen 3,000; these from the king’s entire substance

8 duces quoque eius sponte quod voluerant obtulerunt tam populo quam sacerdotibus et Levitis porro Helcias et Zaccharias et Iehihel principes domus Domini dederunt sacerdotibus ad faciendum phase pecora commixtim duo milia sescenta et boves trecentos

8 and his leaders also, of their own accord, offered what they had willed, both to the people and to the priests and the Levites; moreover Hilkiah and Zechariah and Jehiel, chiefs of the house of the Lord, gave to the priests, for performing the Passover, livestock of mixed kinds, two thousand six hundred, and three hundred oxen

9 Chonenias autem Semeias etiam et Nathanahel fratres eius necnon Asabias et Iahihel et Iozabath principes Levitarum dederunt ceteris Levitis ad celebrandum phase quinque milia pecorum et boves quingentos

9 However Chonenias, and Semeias also, and Nathanahel his brothers, and likewise Asabias and Iahihel and Iozabath, princes of the Levites, gave to the other Levites, for celebrating the Passover, five thousand of the flock and five hundred oxen.

10 praeparatumque est ministerium et steterunt sacerdotes in officio suo Levitae quoque in turmis iuxta regis imperium

10 and the ministry was prepared, and the priests stood in their office; the Levites also in their divisions, according to the king’s command

11 et immolatum est phase asperseruntque sacerdotes manu sua sanguinem et Levitae detraxerunt pelles holocaustorum

11 and the Passover was immolated, and the priests sprinkled the blood with their own hand, and the Levites stripped off the skins of the holocausts

12 et separaverunt ea ut darent per domos et familias singulorum et offerrentur Domino sicut scriptum est in libro Mosi de bubus quoque fecere similiter

12 and they separated them, to give by households and the families of each, and to be offered to the Lord, as it is written in the book of Moses; as for the oxen also, they did likewise.

13 et assaverunt phase super ignem iuxta quod lege praeceptum est pacificas vero hostias coxerunt in lebetis et caccabis et ollis et festinato distribuerunt universae plebi

13 and they roasted the Passover over the fire according to what is prescribed in the Law, but the peace offerings they cooked in caldrons and kettles and pots, and in haste they distributed them to all the people

14 sibi autem et sacerdotibus postea paraverunt nam in oblatione holocaustorum et adipum usque ad noctem sacerdotes fuerant occupati unde Levitae et sibi et sacerdotibus filiis Aaron paraverunt novissimis

14 but for themselves and for the priests afterwards they prepared; for in the oblation of burnt offerings and of the fat-portions the priests had been occupied until night; whence the Levites prepared last of all both for themselves and for the priests, the sons of Aaron.

15 porro cantores filii Asaph stabant in ordine suo iuxta praeceptum David et Asaph et Heman et Idithun prophetarum regis ianitores vero per portas singulas observabant ita ut ne puncto quidem discederent a ministerio quam ob rem et fratres eorum Levitae paraverunt eis cibos

15 moreover the singers, the sons of Asaph, stood in their order according to the precept of David and Asaph and Heman and Idithun, the king’s prophets; and the doorkeepers kept watch at each single gate, so that they did not depart even for a moment from the ministry; wherefore their brothers, the Levites, prepared food for them

16 omnis igitur cultura Domini rite conpleta est in die illa ut facerent phase et offerrent holocausta super altare Domini iuxta praeceptum regis Iosiae

16 therefore all the service of the Lord was duly completed on that day, so that they made the Passover and offered holocausts upon the altar of the Lord, according to the command of King Josiah.

17 feceruntque filii Israhel qui repperti fuerant ibi phase in tempore illo et sollemnitatem azymorum septem diebus

17 and the sons of Israel who had been found there kept the Passover at that time, and the solemnity of the Azymes for seven days

18 non fuit phase simile huic in Israhel a diebus Samuhelis prophetae sed nec quisquam de cunctis regibus Israhel fecit phase sicut Iosias sacerdotibus et Levitis et omni Iuda et Israhel qui reppertus fuerat et habitantibus in Hierusalem

18 there was no Passover like this in Israel from the days of Samuel the prophet; nor did any of all the kings of Israel keep a Passover like Josiah, with the priests and the Levites and all Judah and Israel who had been found, and those inhabiting Jerusalem.

19 octavodecimo anno regni Iosiae hoc phase celebratum est

19 in the eighteenth year of the reign of Josiah, this Passover was celebrated

20 postquam instauraverat Iosias templum ascendit Nechao rex Aegypti ad pugnandum in Charchamis iuxta Eufraten et processit in occursum eius Iosias

20 after Josiah had restored the temple, Necho king of Egypt went up to fight at Carchemish near the Euphrates, and Josiah advanced to meet him

21 at ille missis ad eum nuntiis ait quid mihi et tibi est rex Iuda non adversum te hodie venio sed contra aliam pugno domum ad quam me Deus festinato ire praecepit desine adversum Deum facere qui mecum est ne interficiat te

21 but he, having sent messengers to him, said: What is there between me and you, king of Judah? I am not coming against you today, but I am fighting against another house, to which God has commanded me to go in haste; cease from acting against God, who is with me, lest he kill you.

22 noluit Iosias reverti sed praeparavit contra eum bellum nec adquievit sermonibus Nechao ex ore Dei verum perrexit ut dimicaret in campo Mageddo

22 Josiah did not wish to return, but prepared war against him, nor did he acquiesce to the words of Necho from the mouth of God, but went on to contend in the field of Megiddo.

23 ibique vulneratus a sagittariis dixit pueris suis educite me de proelio quia oppido vulneratus sum

23 and there, wounded by the archers, he said to his servants: Lead me out of the battle, for I am grievously wounded

24 qui transtulerunt eum de curru in alterum currum qui sequebatur eum more regio et asportaverunt in Hierusalem mortuusque est et sepultus in mausoleo patrum suorum et universus Iuda et Hierusalem luxerunt eum

24 who transferred him from the chariot into another chariot that was following him in the royal manner, and they carried him into Jerusalem; and he died and was buried in the mausoleum of his fathers, and all Judah and Jerusalem mourned him

25 Hieremias maxime cuius omnes cantores atque cantrices usque in praesentem diem lamentationes super Iosia replicant et quasi lex obtinuit in Israhel ecce scriptum fertur in Lamentationibus

25 Jeremiah especially, whose lamentations all the cantors and cantatrices unto the present day repeat over Josiah, and it has, as it were, obtained as a law in Israel; behold, it is reported to be written in the Lamentations

26 reliqua autem sermonum Iosiae et misericordiarum eius quae lege praecepta sunt Domini

26 but the rest of the acts of Josiah and his mercies which are prescribed by the Law of the Lord

27 opera quoque illius prima et novissima scripta sunt in libro regum Israhel et Iuda

27 also his works, the first and the last, are written in the book of the kings of Israel and Judah

1 therefore the people of the land took Jehoahaz, the son of Josiah, and appointed him king in place of his father in Jerusalem

2 Jehoahaz was twenty-three years old when he began to reign, and he reigned for three months in Jerusalem.

3 but the king of Egypt removed him when he had come to Jerusalem, and he condemned the land to one hundred talents of silver and a talent of gold

4 constituitque regem pro eo Eliacim fratrem eius super Iudam et Hierusalem et vertit nomen eius Ioacim ipsum vero Ioachaz tulit secum et adduxit in Aegyptum

4 and he appointed as king in his place Eliakim his brother over Judah and Jerusalem, and turned his name to Jehoiakim, but Jehoahaz himself he took with him and brought to Egypt

5 viginti quinque annorum erat Ioacim cum regnare coepisset et undecim annis regnavit in Hierusalem fecitque malum coram Domino Deo suo

5 Jehoiakim was 25 years old when he began to reign, and he reigned 11 years in Jerusalem, and he did evil in the sight of the Lord his God.

6 contra hunc ascendit Nabuchodonosor rex Chaldeorum et vinctum catenis duxit in Babylonem

6 Against him Nebuchadnezzar, king of the Chaldeans, went up, and, bound with chains, he led him to Babylon.

7 ad quam et vasa Domini transtulit et posuit ea in templo suo

7 to which also he transferred the vessels of the Lord and placed them in his temple

8 reliqua autem verborum Ioacim et abominationum eius quas operatus est et quae inventa sunt in eo continentur in libro regum Israhel et Iuda regnavitque Ioachin filius eius pro eo

8 however, the rest of the words of Jehoiakim, and his abominations which he wrought, and what was found in him, are contained in the book of the kings of Israel and Judah; and Jehoiachin his son reigned in his stead.

9 Jehoiachin was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned three months and ten days in Jerusalem; and he did evil in the sight of the Lord.

10 cumque anni circulus volveretur misit Nabuchodonosor rex qui et adduxerunt eum in Babylonem asportatis simul pretiosissimis vasis domus Domini regem vero constituit Sedeciam fratrem eius super Iudam et Hierusalem

10 and when the circle of the year was turning, King Nebuchadnezzar sent, and they brought him into Babylon, the most precious vessels of the house of the Lord being asported at the same time; but he constituted Zedekiah, his brother, king over Judah and Jerusalem.

11 viginti et unius anni erat Sedecias cum regnare coepisset et undecim annis regnavit in Hierusalem

11 Zedekiah was twenty-one years old when he began to reign, and he reigned in Jerusalem for eleven years

12 fecitque malum in oculis Domini Dei sui nec erubuit faciem Hieremiae prophetae loquentis ad se ex ore Domini

12 and he did evil in the eyes of the Lord his God, nor was he ashamed before the face of Jeremiah the prophet, speaking to him from the mouth of the Lord

13 a rege quoque Nabuchodonosor recessit qui adiuraverat eum per Deum et induravit cervicem suam et cor ut non reverteretur ad Dominum Deum Israhel

13 he also withdrew from King Nebuchadnezzar, who had adjured him by God, and he stiffened his neck and his heart, so as not to return to the Lord God of Israel

14 sed et universi principes sacerdotum et populus praevaricati sunt inique iuxta universas abominationes gentium et polluerunt domum Domini quam sanctificaverat sibi in Hierusalem

14 but also all the princes of the priests and the people transgressed iniquitously according to all the abominations of the nations, and they polluted the house of the Lord, which he had sanctified for himself in Jerusalem

15 mittebat autem Dominus Deus patrum suorum ad illos per manum nuntiorum suorum de nocte consurgens et cotidie commonens eo quod parceret populo et habitaculo suo

15 however, the Lord God of their fathers was sending to them by the hand of his messengers, rising from the night and admonishing daily, because he was sparing his people and his habitation.

16 at illi subsannabant nuntios Dei et parvipendebant sermones eius inludebantque prophetis donec ascenderet furor Domini in populum eius et esset nulla curatio

16 but they derided the messengers of God and depreciated his words, and they mocked the prophets, until the fury of the Lord ascended against his people, and there was no cure.

17 adduxit enim super eos regem Chaldeorum et interfecit iuvenes eorum gladio in domo sanctuarii sui non est misertus adulescentis et virginis et senis nec decrepiti quidem sed omnes tradidit manibus eius

17 for he brought upon them the king of the Chaldeans, and he killed their youths with the sword in the house of his sanctuary; he had no pity on young man and virgin and old man, not even on the decrepit, but he handed all over into his hands

18 universaque vasa domus Domini tam maiora quam minora et thesauros templi et regis et principum transtulit in Babylonem

18 and all the vessels of the house of the Lord, both the greater and the lesser, and the treasures of the temple and of the king and of the princes, he transferred to Babylon

19 incenderunt hostes domum Dei destruxerunt murum Hierusalem universas turres conbuserunt et quicquid pretiosum fuerat demoliti sunt

19 the enemies burned the house of God, destroyed the wall of Jerusalem, burned all the towers, and demolished whatever had been precious.

20 si quis evaserat gladium ductus in Babylonem servivit regi et filiis eius donec imperaret rex Persarum

20 whoever had escaped the sword was led away into Babylon and served the king and his sons until the king of the Persians reigned.

21 et conpleretur sermo Domini ex ore Hieremiae et celebraret terra sabbata sua cunctis enim diebus desolationis egit sabbatum usque dum conplerentur septuaginta anni

21 to fulfill the word of the Lord from the mouth of Jeremiah, and that the land might celebrate its Sabbaths; for in all the days of the desolation it kept Sabbath, until seventy years were fulfilled

22 anno autem primo Cyri regis Persarum ad explendum sermonem Domini quem locutus fuerat per os Hieremiae suscitavit Dominus spiritum Cyri regis Persarum qui iussit praedicari in universo regno suo etiam per scripturam dicens

22 but in the first year of Cyrus, king of the Persians, for the fulfillment of the word of the Lord which he had spoken through the mouth of Jeremiah, the Lord stirred up the spirit of Cyrus, king of the Persians, who commanded it to be proclaimed in his entire kingdom, even by writing, saying

23 haec dicit Cyrus rex Persarum omnia regna terrae dedit mihi Dominus Deus caeli et ipse praecepit mihi ut aedificarem ei domum in Hierusalem quae est in Iudaea quis ex vobis est in omni populo eius sit Dominus Deus suus cum eo et ascendat

23 Thus says Cyrus, king of the Persians: the Lord, the God of heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth, and he himself has commanded me to build him a house in Jerusalem, which is in Judea; whoever among you is of all his people—may the Lord his God be with him—let him go up.
