3 filii Aaron ex tribu Levi, qui fuit captivus in regione Medorum, in regno Artaxersis regis Persarum.

3 son of Aaron, of the tribe of Levi, who was a captive in the region of the Medes, in the reign of Artaxerxes, king of the Persians.

4 et factum est verbum Domini ad me dicens:

4 and the word of the Lord came to me, saying:

5 vade adnuntia populo meo facinora ipsorum et filiis eorum iniquitates quas in me admiserunt, ut nuntient filiis filiorum suorum,

5 go announce to my people their misdeeds, and to their sons the iniquities which they have committed against me, that they may announce to the sons of their sons,

6 quia peccata parentum illorum in illis creverunt; obliti enim me sacrificaverunt diis alienis.

6 because the sins of their parents have grown in them; for, forgetful of me, they have sacrificed to alien gods.

7 nonne ego eos eduxi de terra Aegypti de domo servitutis? ipsi autem inritaverunt me et consilia mea spreverunt.

7 Did not I lead them out of the land of Egypt, from the house of servitude? But they themselves irritated me and spurned my counsels.

8 tu autem excute comam capitis tui et proice omnia mala super illos, quoniam non oboedierunt legi meae; populus autem indisciplinatus.

8 but you, shake out the hair of your head and cast forth all evils upon them, since they did not obey my law; but a people undisciplined.

9 usquequo eos sustinebo, quibus tanta beneficia contuli?

9 how long shall I endure them, upon whom I have conferred such great benefits?

10 reges multos propter eos subverti, Pharaonem cum pueris suis et omnem exercitum eius percussi.

10 I overthrew many kings on their account, I smote Pharaoh with his servants and all his army.

11 omnes gentes a facie eorum perdidi et in oriente provinciarum duarum populos Tyri et Sidonis dissipavi et omnes adversarios eorum interfeci.

11 I destroyed all nations from before their face, and in the east, in two provinces, I dissipated the peoples of Tyre and Sidon, and I slew all their adversaries.

12 tu vero loquere ad eos dicens: haec dicit Dominus:

12 but you, speak to them, saying: thus says the Lord:

13 nempe ego vos mare traieci et plateas vobis in invio munitas exhibui; ducem vobis dedi Moysen et Aaron sacerdotem.

13 indeed I carried you across the sea and presented to you broad ways made secure in the pathless place; I gave you Moses as leader and Aaron as priest.

14 lucem vobis per columnam ignis praestiti et magna mirabilia feci in vobis. vos autem mei obliti estis, dicit Dominus.

14 I furnished light for you through a column of fire, and I did great marvels among you. But you have forgotten me, says the Lord.

15 haec dicit Dominus omnipotens: coturnix vobis in signo fuit, castra vobis ad tutelam dedi, et illic murmurastis.

15 thus says the Lord Omnipotent: the quail was for you as a sign, I gave camps to you for protection, and there you murmured.

16 et non triumphastis in nomine meo de perditione inimicorum vestrorum, sed adhuc nunc usque murmuratis.

16 and you did not triumph in my name over the perdition of your enemies, but even up to now you still murmur.

17 ubi sunt beneficia quae praestiti vobis? nonne in deserto cum esuriretis et sitiretis proclamastis ad me

17 where are the benefactions which I rendered to you? was it not in the desert, when you were hungry and thirsty, that you cried out to me

18 dicentes: ut quid nos in desertum istud adduxisti interficere nos? melius nobis fuerat servire Agyptiis quam mori in deserto hoc.

18 saying: why have you led us into this desert to slay us? it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in this desert.

19 ego dolui gemitos vestros et dedi mannam vobis in escam, panem angelorum manducastis.

19 I was pained by your groans, and I gave manna to you for food; you ate the bread of angels.

20 nonne cum sitiretis petram excidi, et fluxerunt aquae in satietatem? propter aestus folia arborum vos texi.

20 did I not, when you were athirst, cleave the rock, and waters flowed unto satiety? on account of the heat I covered you with the leaves of the trees.

21 divisi vobis terras pingues, Chananeos et Ferezeos et Philistheos a facie vestra proieci. quid faciam vobis adhuc? dicit Dominus.

21 I divided for you fertile lands; I cast out the Canaanites and the Perizzites and the Philistines from before your face. What more shall I do for you? says the Lord.

22 haec dicit Dominus omnipotens: in deserto cum essetis in flumine amaro sitientes et blasphemantes nomen meum,

22 thus says the Lord almighty: when you were in the desert, thirsting at the bitter river and blaspheming my name,

23 non ignem vobis pro blasphemiis dedi, sed mittens lignum in aqua dulce feci flumen.

23 I did not give fire to you for blasphemies, but, sending wood into the water, I made the river sweet.

24 quid tibi faciam, Iacob? noluisti me obaudire, Iuda. transferam me ad alias gentes et dabo eis nomen meum, ut custodiant legitima mea.

24 What shall I do to you, Jacob? You were unwilling to obey me, Judah. I will transfer myself to other nations and I will give them my name, that they may guard my legitimate ordinances.

25 quoniam me dereliquistis, et ego vos derelinquam; petentibus vobis a me misericordiam, non miserebor vestri.

25 since you have abandoned me, I too will abandon you; when you seek mercy from me, I will not have mercy on you.

26 quando invocabitis me, ego non exaudiam vos. maculastis enim manus vestras sanguine, et pedes vestri impigri sunt ad committenda homicidia.

26 when you call upon me, I will not hearken to you. for you have stained your hands with blood, and your feet are eager to commit homicides.

27 non quasi me dereliquistis, sed vos ipsos, dicit Dominus.

27 not as if you have forsaken me, but yourselves, says the Lord.

28 haec dicit Dominus omnipotens: nonne ego vos rogavi ut pater filios et ut mater filias et nutrix parvulos suos.

28 thus says the Omnipotent Lord: did I not ask you as a father his sons, and as a mother her daughters, and a nurse her own little ones?

29 ut essetis mihi in populo et ego vobis in Deum, et vos mihi in filios et ego vobis in patrem?

29 that you might be to me for a people and I to you for God, and you to me for sons and I to you for a father?

30 ita vos collegi ut gallina filios suos sub alas suas. modo autem quid faciam vobis? proiciam vos a facie mea.

30 thus I collected you as a hen her sons under her wings. But now, what shall I do to you? I will cast you away from my face.

31 oblationes mihi cum obtuleritis, avertam faciem meam a vobis; dies enim festos vestros et neomenias et circumcisiones carnis repudiavi.

31 when you offer oblations to me, I will avert my face from you; for your feast days and new moons and circumcisions of the flesh I have repudiated.

32 ego misi pueros meos prophetas ad vos, quos acceptos interfecistis et laniastis corpora illorum, quorum sanguinem exquiram, dicit Dominus.

32 I sent my servants, the prophets, to you—whom, once received, you killed and lacerated their bodies—whose blood I will require, says the Lord.

33 haec dicit Dominus omnipotens: domus vestra deserta est, proiciam vos sicut ventus stipulam.

33 thus says the Lord Omnipotent: your house is deserted; I will cast you out like the wind does the stubble.

34 et filii procreationem non facient, quoniam mandatum meum vobiscum neglexerunt et quod malum est coram me fecerunt.

34 and the sons will not make procreation, since my mandate with you they have neglected, and they have done what is evil before me.

35 tradam domus vestras populo venienti. qui me non audientes credunt; quibus signa non ostendi, facient quae praecepi.

35 I will hand over your houses to the coming people. who, not hearing me, do believe; to whom I did not show signs, they will do the things which I have prescribed.

36 prophetas non viderunt et memorabuntur antiquitatum eorum.

36 they have not seen the prophets, and they will be mindful of their antiquities.

37 testor populi venientis gratiam, cuius parvuli exultant cum laetitia, me non videntes oculis carnalibus, sed spiritu credent quae dixi.

37 I testify to the grace of the coming people, whose little ones exult with gladness, not seeing me with carnal eyes, but in spirit they will believe the things which I have said.

38 et nunc, pater, aspice cum gloria et vide populum venientem ab oriente.

38 and now, father, behold with glory and see the people coming from the east.

39 quibus dabo ducatum Abraham, Isaac et Iacob et Osee et Amos et Michae et Iohelis et Abdiae et Ionae

39 to whom I will give as guides Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and Hosea and Amos and Micah and Joel and Obadiah and Jonah

40 et Naum et Abacuc, Sofoniae. Aggei, Zacchariae et Malachiae, qui et angelus Domini vocatus est.

40 and Nahum and Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah and Malachi, who also was called the angel of the Lord.

CHAPTER 2

1 haec dicit Dominus: ego eduxi populum istum de servitute, quibus mandata dedi per pueros meos prophetas, quos audire noluerunt, sed irrita fecerunt mea consilia.

1 Thus says the Lord: I led out this people from servitude, to whom I gave commandments through my servants the prophets, whom they were unwilling to hear, but they made my counsels void.

2 mater quae eos generavit dicit illis: ite, filii, quia ego vidua sum et derelicta.

2 the mother who generated them says to them: go, sons, because I am a widow and derelict.

3 educavi vos cum laetitia et amisi vos cum luctu et tristitia, quoniam peccastis coram Domino Deo et quod malum est coram me fecistis.

3 I reared you with joy, and I lost you with mourning and sadness, since you have sinned before the Lord God and have done what is evil before me.

4 modo autem quid faciam vobis? ego enim vidua sum et derelicta. ite, filii, et petite a Domino misericordiam.

4 but now what am I to do for you? for I am a widow and derelict. go, sons, and petition mercy from the Lord.

5 ego autem te, pater, testem invoco super matrem filiorum, quia noluerunt testamentum meum servare,

5 but I, however, invoke you, father, as a witness against the mother of the sons, because they were unwilling to keep my testament,

6 ut des eis confusionem et matrem eorum in direptionem, ne generatio eorum fiat.

6 that you give to them confusion and their mother into direption, lest their generation come to be.

7 dispergantur in gentes, nomina eorum deleantur a terra, quoniam spreverunt testamentum meum.

7 let them be scattered among the nations, let their names be blotted out from the earth, because they have spurned my testament.

8 vae tibi, Assur, qui abscondis iniquos penes te. gens mala, memorare quid fecerim Sodomae et Gomorrae,

8 woe to you, Assur, who conceal the iniquitous among you. evil nation, remember what I have done to Sodom and Gomorrah,

9 quorum terra iacet in piceis glebis et aggeribus cinerum. sic dabo eos qui me non audierunt, dicit Dominus omnipotens.

9 whose land lies in bituminous clods and ramparts of ashes. Thus I will give over those who did not heed me, says the Lord Almighty.

10 haec dicit Dominus ad Ezram: adnuntia populo meo, quoniam dabo eis regnum Hierusalem, quod daturus eram Israhel.

10 thus says the Lord to Ezra: announce to my people, for I will give to them the kingdom of Jerusalem, which I was going to give to Israel.

11 et sumam mihi gloriam illorum et dabo eis tabernacula aeterna, quae praeparaveram illis.

11 and I will take to myself their glory and I will give to them eternal tabernacles, which I had prepared for them.

12 lignum vitae erit illis in odore unguenti, et non laborabunt neque fatigabuntur.

12 the tree of life will be to them in the odor of unguent, and they will not labor nor be fatigued.

13 ite et accipietis, rogate vobis dies paucos ut minorentur; iam paratum est vobis regnum, vigilate.

13 go, and you will receive; ask for yourselves a few days that they may be diminished; already the kingdom has been prepared for you, keep vigil.

14 testare testare, caelum et terram, omisi enim malum et creavi bonum, quia vivo ego, dicit Dominus.

14 testify, testify, heaven and earth, for I have set aside evil and created good, as I live, says the Lord.

15 mater, conplectere filios tuos, educa illos cum laetitia sicut columba, confirma pedes eorum, quoniam te elegi, dicit Dominus.

15 Mother, embrace your sons, educate them with joy like a dove, strengthen their feet, since I have chosen you, says the Lord.

16 et resuscitabo mortuos de locis suis et de monumentis educam illos, quoniam cognovi nomen meum in illis.

16 and I will resuscitate the dead from their places, and from the tombs I will bring them out, because I have recognized my name in them.

17 noli timere, mater filiorum, quoniam te elegi, dicit Dominus.

17 do not fear, mother of sons, since I have chosen you, says the Lord.

18 mittam tibi adiutorium pueros meos Esaiam et Hieremiam, ad quorum consilium sanctificavi et paravi tibi arbores duodecim gravatas variis fructibus

18 I will send you aid, my servants Isaiah and Jeremiah, at whose counsel I have sanctified and prepared for you twelve trees laden with various fruits

19 et totidem fontes fluentes lac et mel et montes inmensos septem habentes rosam et lilium, in quibus gaudio replebo filios tuos.

19 and just as many springs flowing with milk and honey, and seven immense mountains having the rose and the lily, in which I will fill your sons with joy.

20 viduam iustifica, pupillo iudica, egenti da, orfanum tuere, nudum vesti,

20 vindicate the widow, adjudicate for the ward, give to the needy, protect the orphan, clothe the naked,

21 confractum et debilem cura, claudum inridere noli, tutare mancum, et caecum ad visionem claritatis meae admitte,

21 care for the broken and the debilitated, do not deride the lame, protect the maimed, and admit the blind to the vision of my clarity,

22 senem et iuvenem intra muros tuos serva,

22 preserve the old man and the young man within your walls,

23 mortuos ubi inveneris signans commenda sepulchro, et dabo tibi primam sessionem in resurrectione mea.

23 wherever you find the dead, signing them, commend them to the sepulcher, and I will give to you the first seat in my resurrection.

24 pausa et quiesce, populus meus, quia veniet requies tua.

24 pause and be at rest, my people, for your repose will come.

25 nutrix bona, nutri filios tuos, confirma pedes eorum.

25 good nurse, nourish your sons, strengthen their feet.

26 servos quos tibi dedi, nemo ex eis interiet, ego enim eos requiram de numero tuo.

26 the servants whom I gave to you, none of them will perish, for I myself will require them from your number.

27 noli satagere, cum venerit enim dies pressurae et angustiae, alii plorabunt et tristes erunt, tu autem hilaris et copiosa eris.

27 do not be over-busy, for when the day of pressure and anguish shall have come, others will weep and will be sad, but you, however, will be cheerful and copious.

28 zelabunt gentes et nihil adversum te poterunt, dicit Dominus.

28 the nations will be jealous and will be able to do nothing against you, says the Lord.

29 manus meae tegent te, ne filii tui gehennam videant.

29 my hands will cover you, lest your sons see Gehenna.

30 iucundare, mater, cum filiis tuis, quia ego te eripiam, dicit Dominus.

30 Be jocund, mother, with your sons, for I will rescue you, says the Lord.

31 filios tuos dormientes memorare, quoniam ego eos educam de latibulis terrae et misericordiam cum illis faciam, quoniam misericors sum, dicit Dominus omnipotens.

31 remember your sleeping sons, for I will lead them out from the hiding-places of the earth and will show mercy toward them, for I am merciful, says the Omnipotent Lord.

32 amplectere natos tuos usque dum venio et praedica illis misericordiam, quoniam exuberant fontes mei et gratia mea no A.

32 embrace your offspring until I come, and preach mercy to them, since my fountains overflow and my grace no A.

33 ego Ezra accepi praeceptum a Domino in monte Horeb, ut irem ad Israhel. ad quos cum venirem, reprobaverunt me et respuerunt mandatum Domini.

33 I, Ezra, received a precept from the Lord on Mount Horeb, that I should go to Israel. When I came to them, they reprobated me and spat out the mandate of the Lord.

34 ideoque vobis dico, gentes quae auditis et intellegitis: expectate pastorem vestrum, requiem aeternitatis dabit vobis, quoniam in proximo est ille, qui in finem saeculi adveniet.

34 and therefore I say to you, nations who hear and understand: await your shepherd; he will give you the rest of eternity, for he is at hand, he who will come at the end of the age.

35 parati estote ad praemia regni, quia lux perpetua lucebit vobis per aeternitatem temporis.

35 be prepared for the rewards of the kingdom, because perpetual light will shine for you throughout the eternity of time.

36 fugite umbram saeculi huius, accipite iucunditatem gloriae vestrae. ego testor palam salvatorem meum.

36 flee the shadow of this age, accept the jocundity of your glory. I testify openly to my savior.

37 commendatum Domini accipite et iucundamini gratias agentes ei qui vos ad caelestia regna vocavit.

37 Receive the Lord’s charge, and rejoice, giving thanks to him who has called you to the heavenly realms.

38 surgite et state et videte numerum signatorum in convivio Domini.

38 arise and stand and see the number of those signed at the Lord’s banquet.

39 qui se de umbra saeculi transtulerunt, splendidas tunicas a Domino acceperunt.

39 those who have translated themselves from the shadow of the world have received splendid tunics from the Lord.

40 recipe, Sion, numerum tuum et conclude candidatos tuos, qui legem Domini conpleverunt.

40 receive, Zion, your number and enclose your candidates, who have fulfilled the law of the Lord.

41 filiorum tuorum, quos optabas, plenus est numerus; roga imperium Domini, ut sanctificetur populus tuus, qui vocatus est ab initio.

41 the number of your sons, whom you were desiring, is full; ask the Lord’s command, that your people, who have been called from the beginning, may be sanctified.

42 ego Ezra vidi in monte Sion turbam magnam, quam numerare non potui, et omnes canticis conlaudabant Dominum.

42 I, Ezra, saw on Mount Zion a great multitude, which I could not number, and all were lauding the Lord with canticles.

43 et in medio eorum erat iuvenis statura celsus, eminentior omnibus illis, et singulis eorum capitibus inponebat coronas, et magis exaltabatur; ego autem miraculo tenebar.

43 and in the midst of them there was a youth of lofty stature, more eminent than all of them, and upon each of their heads he was placing crowns, and he was being exalted the more; but I was held by wonder.

44 tunc interrogavi angelum et dixi: qui sunt hii, domine?

44 then I asked the angel and said: who are these, lord?

45 qui respondens dixit mihi: hii sunt qui mortalem tunicam deposuerunt et inmortalem sumpserunt et confessi sunt nomen Dei; modo coronantur et accipiunt palmas.

45 who, answering, said to me: these are they who have laid aside the mortal tunic and have taken up the immortal, and have confessed the name of God; now they are being crowned and receive palms.

46 et dixi ad angelum: ille iuvenis quis est, qui eis coronas inponit et palmas in manus tradit?

46 and I said to the angel: who is that young man who imposes crowns upon them and hands over palms into their hands?

47 qui respondens dixit mihi: ipse est Filius Dei, quem in saeculo confessi sunt. ego autem magnificare eos coepi, qui fortiter pro nomine Domini steterunt.

47 who, answering, said to me: he himself is the Son of God, whom they confessed in the world. But I began to magnify those who stood bravely for the name of the Lord.

48 tunc dixit mihi angelus: vade et adnuntia populo meo, qualia et quanta mirabilia Domini Dei vidisti.

48 then the angel said to me: go and announce to my people what sort and how great marvels of the Lord God you have seen.

CAPUT 3

CHAPTER 3

1 anno tricesimo ruinae civitatis eram in Babylone, ego Salathihel qui et Ezras, et conturbatus sum super cubili meo recumbens, et cogitationes meae ascendebant super cor meum,

1 in the 30th year of the ruin of the city I was in Babylon, I, Salathiel who is also Ezra, and I was disturbed, lying upon my bed, and my thoughts were ascending upon my heart,

2 quoniam vidi desertionem Sion et abundantiam eorum qui habitabant in Babylone.

2 for I saw the desolation of Zion and the abundance of those who dwelt in Babylon.

3 et ventilatus est spiritus meus valde, et coepi loqui ad Altissimum verba timorata,

3 and my spirit was greatly stirred, and I began to speak to the Most High reverent words,

4 et dixi: o Domine Dominator, tu dixisti ab initio, quando plantasti terram, et hoc solus, et imperasti pulveri,

4 and I said: O Lord, Sovereign, you said from the beginning, when you planted the earth, and this by yourself alone, and you commanded the dust,

5 et dedit Adam corpus mortuum. sed et ipsum figmentum manuum tuarum erat, et insuflasti in eum spiritum vitae, et factus est vivens coram te.

5 and you gave Adam a mortal body. But he too was the formation of your hands, and you breathed into him the spirit of life, and he became living before you.

6 et induxisti eum in paradisum, quem plantavit dextera tua antequam terra adventaret.

6 and you led him into paradise, which your right hand planted before the earth’s advent.

7 et huic mandasti diligentiam unam tuam, et praeterivit eam, et statim instituisti in eum mortem et in nationibus eius. et natae sunt ex eo gentes et tribus, populi et cognationes, quorum non est numerus.

7 and to him you gave one command, and he transgressed it, and immediately you instituted upon him death and upon his nations. and from him were born nations and tribes, peoples and kindreds, whose number is beyond counting.

8 et ambulavit unaquaque gens in voluntate sua, et impie agebant coram te et spernebant praecepta tua, et tu non prohibuisti eos.

8 and each nation walked according to its own will, and they acted impiously before you and spurned your precepts, and you did not prohibit them.

9 iterum autem in tempore induxisti diluvium super habitantes saeculum et perdidisti eos.

9 but again, in due time, you brought a deluge upon the inhabitants of the age and destroyed them.

10 et factum est in uno casui eorum, sicut Adae mors sic et his diluvium.

10 and it came to pass in one case of theirs: just as Adam’s death, so also to these the deluge.

11 dereliquisti autem ex his unum Noe cum domo sua; ex eo iustos omnes.

11 but you left behind out of them one, Noah, with his household; from him, all the just.

12 et factum est cum coepissent multiplicari qui habitabant super terram, et multiplicaverunt filios et populos et gentes multas, et coeperunt iterato impietatem facere plus quam priores.

12 and it came to pass when those who dwelt upon the earth began to be multiplied, and they multiplied sons and peoples and many nations, they began again to commit impiety more than the earlier ones.

13 et factum est cum iniquitatem facerent coram te, elegisti tibi ex his unum, cui nomen erat Abraham.

13 and it came to pass when they were doing iniquity before you, you chose for yourself one from among them, whose name was Abraham.

14 et dilexisti eum et demonstrasti ei temporum finem solo secrete noctu.

14 and you loved him and demonstrated to him the end of the times, to him alone, secretly by night.

15 et disposuisti ei testamentum aeternum et dixisti ei, ut non umquam derelinquas semen eius. et dedisti ei Isaac, et Isaac dedis Esau.

15 and you established for him an eternal testament and you said to him, that you never forsake his seed. And you gave to him Isaac, and to Isaac you gave Esau.

16 et segregasti tibi Iacob, Esau autem separasti. et factus est Iacob in multitudine magna.

16 and you segregated Jacob for yourself, but Esau you separated. and Jacob became a great multitude.

17 et factum est cum educeres semen eius ex Aegypto, et adduxisti eos super montem Sina.

17 And it came to pass when you led out his seed from Egypt, and you brought them upon Mount Sinai.

18 et inclinasti caelos et statuisti terram et commovisti orbem et tremere fecisti abyssos et conturbasti saeculum.

18 and you inclined the heavens and established the earth and stirred the orb and made the abysses tremble and perturbed the age.

19 et transiit gloria tua portas quattuor, ignis et terraemotus et spiritus et gelu, ut dares semini Iacob legem et generationi Israhel diligentiam.

19 and your glory passed through the four gates: fire and earthquake and wind and frost, so that you might give to the seed of Jacob a law and to the generation of Israel diligence.

20 et non abstulisti ab eis cor malignum, ut faceret lex tua in eis fructum.

20 and you did not take away from them the malignant heart, so that your law might bear fruit in them.

21 cor enim malignum baiulans primus Adam transgressus et victus est, sed et omnes qui ex eo nati sunt.

21 for, bearing a malign heart, the first Adam transgressed and was conquered, and so too all who have been born from him.

22 et facta est permanens infirmitas et lex cum corde populi cum malignitate radicis, et discessit quod bonum est et mansit malignum.

22 and a permanent infirmity came to be, and the Law together with the heart of the people was with the malignity of the root, and what is good departed and the malign remained.

23 et transierunt tempora et finiti sunt anni, et suscitasti tibi servum nomine David.

23 and the times passed and the years were finished, and you raised up for yourself a servant by the name David.

24 and you said to him to build a city for your Name and to offer to you in it, from what is yours, oblations.

25 et factum est hoc annis multis. et dereliquerunt qui habitabant civitatem,

25 and this came to pass over many years. and those who inhabited the city abandoned it,

26 in omnibus facientes sicut fecit Adam et omnes generationes eius; utebantur enim et ipsi cor malignum.

26 doing in all things just as Adam and all his generations did; for they too employed a malign heart.

27 et tradidisti civitatem tuam in manus inimicorum tuorum.

27 and you handed over your city into the hands of your enemies.

28 et dixi ego tunc in corde meo: numquid meliora faciunt qui habitant in Babylone, et propter hoc dominabit Sion?

28 and I said then in my heart: Do those who dwell in Babylon do better, and for this reason will Zion rule?

29 factum est autem cum venissem huc, et vidi impietates quorum non est numerus, et delinquentes multos vidit anima mea hoc tricesimo anno. et excessit cor meum,

29 and it came to pass when I had come here, and I saw impieties without number, and my soul saw many delinquents in this 30th year. And my heart overflowed,

30 quoniam vidi quomodo sustines eos peccantes et pepercisti impie agentibus, et perdidisti populum tuum et conservasti inimicos tuos, et non significasti

33 of which the reward has not appeared, nor has the labor fructified? for passing through I passed through among the nations, and I saw them abounding and not remembering your commandments.

34 nunc ergo pondera in statera nostras iniquitates et eorum qui habitant in saeculo, et invenietur momentum puncti ubi declinet.

34 now therefore weigh in the balance our iniquities and those of them who inhabit the world, and the moment of the point will be found where it declines.

35 aut quando non peccaverunt in conspectu tuo qui habitant terram, aut quae gens sic observavit mandata tua?

35 or when have those who dwell upon the earth not sinned in your sight, or what nation has thus observed your mandates?

3 and I said: yes, my lord; and he answered me and said: I have been sent to show you three ways and to set forth three similitudes before you.

4 de quibus si mihi renuntiaveris unam ex his, et ego tibi demonstrabo viam quam desideras videre, et doceam te quare cor malignum.

5 and I said: speak, my lord. and he said to me: go, weigh for me the weight of fire, or measure for me the breath of the wind, or call back to me the day that has passed.

10 et dixit mihi: tu quae tua sunt tecum coadulescentia non potes cognoscere,

10 and he said to me: you cannot come to know the things that are yours, growing up together with you,

11 et quomodo poterit vas tuum capere Altissimi viam?... et iam exterritus corrupto saeculo intellegere incorruptionem? et cum haec audissem, cecidi in faciem meam

11 and how will your vessel be able to contain the way of the Most High? ... and, already terror-struck in a corrupted age, to understand incorruption? And when I had heard these things, I fell upon my face

14 et dixerunt: venite et eamus et faciamus ad mare bellum, ut recedat coram nos, et faciamus nobis alias silvas,

15 et similiter fluctus maris et ipsi cogitaverunt cogitationem et dixerunt: venite ascendentes debellemus silvam campi, ut et ibi consummemus nobismet ipsis aliam regionem.

15 and similarly the waves of the sea, they themselves too, thought a thought and said: come, ascending, let us debellate the wood of the plain, that even there we may consummate for our very selves another region.

16 et factus est cogitatus silvae in vano, venit enim ignis et consumpsit eam.

16 and the cogitation of the forest proved in vain, for fire came and consumed it.

17 similiter et cogitatus fluctuum maris, stetit enim harena et prohibuit eam.

17 similarly also the cogitation of the waves of the sea, for the sand stood and prohibited it.

18 si enim eras iudex horum, quem incipiebas iustificare aut quem condemnare?

18 for if you were judge of these, whom were you beginning to justify, or whom to condemn?

19 et respondi et dixi: utrique vanam cogitationem cogitaverunt, terra enim data est silvae, et maris locus portare fluctus suos.

19 and I responded and said: both have cogitated a vain cogitation, for the earth has been given to the woodland, and the place of the sea to carry its waves.

20 et respondit ad me et dixit: bene tu iudicasti, et quare non iudicasti tibimet ipso?

20 and he responded to me and said: you have judged well, and why have you not judged your very self?

21 quemadmodum enim terra silvae data est et mare fluctibus suis, et qui super terram inhabitant quae sunt super terram intellegere solummodo possunt, et qui super caelos super altitudinem caelorum.

21 for just as the earth has been given to the forest and the sea to its waves, so those who inhabit upon the earth are able only to understand the things that are upon the earth, and those who are above the heavens, the things above the altitude of the heavens.

22 et respondi et dixi: deprecor te, domine, ut mihi datus est sensus intellegendi.

22 and I answered and said: I entreat you, lord, since a sense of understanding has been given to me.

23 non enim volui interrogare de superioribus viis, sed de his quae pertranseunt per nos cotidie, propter quod Israhel datus est in obprobrium gentibus, quem dilexisti populum datus est tribubus impiis, et lex patrum nostrorum in interitum deducta est, et dispositiones scriptae nusquam sunt.

23 for I did not wish to inquire about the superior ways, but about those things which pass through us daily, for which cause Israel has been given into opprobrium to the nations, the people whom you loved has been given to impious tribes, and the law of our fathers has been brought down into destruction, and the written dispositions are nowhere to be found.

24 et pertransivimus de saeculo ut lucustae, et vita nostra ut vapor, et nec digni sumus misericordiam consequi.

24 and we have passed out of the age like locusts, and our life is like vapor, and we are not even worthy to obtain mercy.

25 sed quid faciet nomini suo quod invocatum est super nos? et his interrogavi.

25 but what will he do for his name which has been invoked over us? and about these things I asked.

26 et respondit ad me et dixit: si fueris videbis, et si vixeris, frequenter miraberis, quoniam festinans festinat saeculum pertransire.

26 and he answered me and said: if you are, you will see; and if you live, you will frequently marvel, since, hastening, the age hastens to pass away.

27 non capiet portare quae in temporibus iustis repromissa sunt, quoniam plenum maestitia est saeculum hoc et infirmitatibus.

27 it will not be able to bear the things which have been promised for the just times, because this age is full of sadness and infirmities.

28 seminatum est enim malum, quibus me interrogas de ea, et necdum venit destrictio ipsius.

28 for evil has been sown, that about which you interrogate me, and its destruction has not yet come.

29 si ergo non messum fuerit quod seminatum est, et discesserit locus ubi seminatum est malum, non veniet ager ubi seminatum est bonum.

29 if, therefore, what has been sown is not reaped, and the place where the evil was sown departs, the field where the good has been sown will not come.

30 quoniam granum seminis mali seminatum est in corde Adam ab initio, et quantum impietatis generavit usque nunc et generabit usque cum veniat area.

30 since a grain of the seed of evil has been sown in the heart of Adam from the beginning, and how much impiety it has engendered up to now and will engender until the threshing-floor comes.

31 aestima autem apud te, granum mali seminis quantum fructum impietatis generaverit.

31 But estimate with yourself how much fruit of impiety the grain of the evil seed has generated.

32 quando seminatae fuerint spicae quarum non est numerus, quam magnam aream incipient facere.

32 when the ears (of grain) shall have been sown, of which there is no number, how great a threshing-floor they will begin to make.

33 et respondi et dixi: quo et quando haec? quare modici et mali anni nostri?

33 and I responded and I said: where and when are these things? why are our years scant and evil?

34 et respondit ad me et dixit: non festina spiritu super Altissimum; tu enim festinas propter temet ipsum spiritum, nam Excelsus pro multis.

34 and he answered me and said: Do not be hasty in spirit above the Most High; for you are hasty on account of your own spirit, whereas the Exalted is for many.

35 nonne de his interrogaverunt animae iustorum in promptuariis suis dicentes: usquequo spero sic? et quando venit fructus areae mercedis nostrae?

35 did not the souls of the just inquire about these things in their storehouses, saying: how long do I hope thus? and when does the fruit of the threshing-floor of our reward come?

36 et respondit ad ea Hieremihel archangelus et dixit: quando impletus fuerit numerus similium vobis, quoniam in statera ponderavit saeculum

36 and Jeremiel the archangel answered them and said: when the number of those similar to you shall have been fulfilled, for he has weighed the age in the balance

37 et mensura mensuravit tempora et numero numeravit tempora, et non commovet nec excitabit usque dum impleatur praedicta mensura.

37 and by measure he has measured the times, and by number he has numbered the times, and he does not move nor will he excite until the aforementioned measure is fulfilled.

38 et respondi et dixi: o dominator domine, sed et nos omnes pleni sumus impietate.

40 et respondit ad me et dixit: vade et interroga praegnantem, si quando impleverit novem menses suos, adhuc poterit matrix eius retinere fetus in semet ipsa.

40 and he responded to me and said: go and interrogate a pregnant woman, if, when she has completed her nine months, her matrix will still be able to retain the fetus within herself.

41 et dixi: non potest, domine. et dixit ad me: in inferno promptuaria animarum matrici adsimilata sunt.

41 and I said: it cannot, lord. and he said to me: in hell the promptuaries of souls are assimilated to a matrix.

42 quemadmodum enim festinavit quae parit effugere necessitatem partus, sic et haec festinat reddere ea quae commendata sunt

42 for just as she who gives birth has hastened to escape the necessity of childbirth, so also these hasten to render back the things that were entrusted

43 ab initio. tunc tibi demonstrabitur de his quae concupiscis videre.

43 from the beginning. then it will be demonstrated to you concerning the things which you desire to see.

44 et respondi et dixi: si inveni gratiam ante oculos tuos, et si possibile est, et si idoneus sum,,

44 and I responded and said: if I have found grace before your eyes, and if it is possible, and if I am worthy,,

45 demonstra mihi et hoc si plus quam praeteriti habet venire aut plura pertransierunt super nos,

45 demonstrate to me this also, whether more than the things past has to come, or whether more things have passed over us,

46 quoniam quod pertransivit scio, quid autem futuri sit ignoro.

46 since what has passed I know, but what is of the future I do not know.

47 et dixit ad me: sta super dexteram partem et demonstrabo tibi interpretationem similitudinis.

48 et steti et vidi, et ecce fornax ardens transiit coram me; et factum est cum transiret flamma, et vidi et ecce superavit fumus.

48 and I stood and I saw, and behold, an ardent furnace passed before me; and it came to pass, when the flame was passing, that I saw, and behold, the smoke prevailed.

49 et post hoc transiit coram me nubes plena aquae et inmisit pluviam impetu multam; et cum transisset impetus pluviae et superaverunt in ea guttae.

49 and after this a cloud full of water passed before me and sent down rain with much impetus; and when the impetus of the rain had passed, the drops prevailed in it.

50 et dixit ad me: cogita tibi. sicut enim crescit pluvia amplius quam guttae, et ignis amplius quam fumus, sic superabundavit quae transivit mensura, superaverunt autem guttae et fumus.

50 and he said to me: consider it for yourself. For just as the rain grows more than the drops, and the fire more than the smoke, so that which passed overflowed the measure; but the drops and the smoke prevailed.

51 et oravi et dixi: putas vivo usque in diebus illis, vel quis erit in diebus illis?

51 and I prayed and said: do you think that I shall live on until those days, or who will be in those days?

52 respondit ad me et dixit: de signis de quibus me perrogas, ex parte possum tibi dicere, de vita autem tua non sum missus dicere tibi, sed nescio.

52 he answered me and said: about the signs concerning which you question me, I can tell you in part; but about your life I have not been sent to tell you, but I do not know.

CHAPTER 5

1 de signis autem: ecce dies venient, et adprehendentur qui inhabitant super terram in excessu multo, et abscondetur veritatis via, et sterilis erit a fide regio.

1 but concerning the signs: behold, days will come, and those who inhabit upon the earth will be apprehended in much excess, and the way of truth will be hidden, and the region will be barren of faith.

2 et multiplicabitur iniustitia super hanc quam ipse tu vides et super quam audisti olim.

2 and injustice will be multiplied beyond this which you yourself see and beyond that which you heard formerly.

3 et erit inconposita vestigio quam nunc vides regnare regionem, et videbunt eam desertam.

3 and the region which you now see reigning will be disordered in an instant, and they will see it deserted.

4 si autem tibi dederit Altissimus vivere, et videbis post tertiam turbatam, et relucescet subito sol noctu et luna interdie.

4 But if the Most High grants you to live, you will see after the third upheaval, and the sun will suddenly shine again at night and the moon by day.

5 et de ligno sanguis stillabit, et lapis dabit vocem suam; et populi commovebuntur, et gressus commutabuntur.

5 and from the wood blood will drip, and the stone will give its voice; and the peoples will be stirred, and steps will be changed.

6 et regnabit quem non sperant qui inhabitant super terram; et volatilia conmigrationem facient.

6 and he will reign, whom those who inhabit upon the earth do not expect; and the birds will make a commigration.

7 et mare Sodomitum pisces reiciet. et dabit vocem noctu quem non noverant multi, omnes autem audient vocem eius.

8 and chaos will arise throughout many places, and fire will be frequently emitted, and wild beasts will transmigrate from their own region, and menstruating women will bear monsters,

9 et in dulcibus aquis salsae invenientur. et amici omnes semet ipsos expugnabunt; et abscondetur tunc sensus, et intellectus separabitur in promptuarium suum.

9 and in sweet waters salty things will be found. and all friends will attack one another; and then sense will be hidden, and intellect will be separated into its promptuary.

10 et quaeretur a multis et non invenietur, et multiplicabitur iniustitia et incontinentia super terram.

10 and it will be sought by many and will not be found, and injustice and incontinence will be multiplied upon the earth.

11 et interrogabit regio proximam suam et dicet: numquid per te pertransiit iustitia iustum faciens? et haec negabit.

11 and a region will ask its neighbor and will say: has justice passed through you, making someone just? and this one will deny it.

12 et erit in illo tempore, et sperabunt homines et non inpetrabunt, laborabunt et non dirigentur viae eorum.

12 and it will be in that time, and men will hope and will not obtain, they will labor and their ways will not be directed.

13 haec signa dicere tibi permissum est mihi. et si oraveris iterum et ploraveris sicut et nunc et ieiunaveris septem diebus, audies iterato horum maiora.

13 it has been permitted to me to tell you these signs. And if you pray again and weep as even now, and fast for seven days, you will hear again things greater than these.

14 et evigilavi, et corpus meum horruit valde, et anima mea laboravit ut deficeret.

24 and from all the lands of the orb you chose for yourself one pit, and from all the flowers of the orb you chose for yourself one lily,

25 et ex omnibus abyssis maris replesti tibi rivum unum, et ex omnibus aedificatis civitatibus sanctificasti tibimet ipsi Sion,

25 and out of all the abysses of the sea you filled for yourself one stream, and out of all the built cities you sanctified for yourself Zion herself,

28 and now, Lord, why have you delivered the one to very many, and prepared one root above the others, and dispersed your unique one among many?

29 et conculcaverunt qui contradicebant sponsionibus tuis quique tuis testamentis credebant.

29 and they trampled underfoot—those who were gainsaying your pledges and those who were believing your testaments.

30 et si odiens odisti populum tuum tuis manibus debet castigari.

30 and if, hating, you have hated your people, it ought to be castigated by your hands.

31 et factum est, cum locutus essem sermones istos, et missus est angelus ad me qui ante venerat ad me praeterita nocte,

31 and it came to pass, when I had spoken these words, that the angel was sent to me who had come to me the previous night,

32 et dixit mihi: audi me et instruam te, et intende mihi et adiciam coram te.

32 and he said to me: listen to me and I will instruct you, and attend to me and I will add before you.

33 et dixi: loquere, dominus meus. et

33 and I said: speak, my lord. and

34 he said to me: you have become very much in an excess of mind in Israel; or have you loved him more than the one who made him? no, lord, but pain—for my loins torment me every hour, seeking to apprehend the path of the Most High and to investigate a part of his judgment.

35 et dixit ad me: non potes. et dixi: quare, domine, aut quid nascebar, aut quare non fiebat matrix matris meae mihi sepulchrum, ut non viderem laborem Iacob et defatigationem generis Israhel?

35 and he said to me: you cannot. and I said: why, lord, or for what was I born, or why was the womb of my mother not made a sepulcher for me, so that I might not see the labor of Jacob and the weariness of the race of Israel?

36 et dixit ad me: numera mihi qui necdum venerunt, et collige mihi dispersas guttas, et revirida mihi aridos flores,

36 and he said to me: enumerate for me those who have not yet come, and collect for me the dispersed drops, and make green again for me the arid flowers,

37 et aperi mihi clausa promptuaria et produc mihi inclusos in eis flatus, aut monstra mihi vocis imaginem, et tunc ostendam tibi eum laborem quem rogas videre.

37 and open for me the closed storehouses and produce for me the breaths enclosed in them, or show me the image of a voice, and then I will show you that labor which you ask to see.

38 et dixi: dominator domine, quis enim est qui potest haec scire, nisi qui cum hominibus habitationem non habet?

38 and I said: Sovereign Lord, for who is there who can know these things, unless he who has no habitation with men?

39 ego autem insipiens, et quomodo potero dicere de his quibus me interrogasti?

39 But I am unwise; and how will I be able to speak about those things about which you have interrogated me?

40 et dixit ad me: quomodo non potes facere unum de his quae dicta sunt, sic non poteris invenire iudicium meum aut finem caritatis quem pro populo meo promisi.

40 and he said to me: just as you are not able to do one of the things that have been spoken, so you will not be able to find my judgment or the end of charity which I have promised for my people.

41 et dixi: sed ecce, domine, tu praees his qui in fine sunt, et quid facient qui ante me sunt aut nos aut hii qui post nos?

41 and I said: but behold, lord, you preside over those who are at the end, and what will those do who are before me, or we, or those who are after us?

42 et dixit ad me: coronae adsimilabo iudicium meum. sicut non novissimorum tarditas, sic nec priorum velocitas.

42 and he said to me: I will liken my judgment to a crown. Just as not the tardiness of the last, so neither the swiftness of the first.

14 si ergo non ingredientes ingressi fuerint qui vivunt angusta et vana haec, non poterunt recipere quae sunt reposita.

17 et respondi et dixi: dominator domine, ecce disposuisti in lege tua, quoniam iusti hereditabunt haec, impii autem peribunt.

17 and I answered and said: sovereign lord, behold you have disposed in your law that the just will inherit these things, but the impious will perish.

18 iusti autem ferent angusta sperantes spatiosa; qui enim impie gesserunt, et angustiam passi sunt et spatiosa non viderunt.

19 et dixit ad me: non es iudex super Dominum neque intellegens super Altissimum.

34 iudicium autem solum remanebit. et veritas stabit et fides convalescet,

34 but judgment alone will remain. and truth will stand and faith will grow strong,

35 et opus subsequetur et merces ostendetur. et iustitiae vigilabunt et iniustitiae non dormibunt.

39 such a thing as this, which has neither the sun nor the moon nor the stars,

40 neque nubem neque tonitruum neque coruscationem, neque ventum neque aquam neque aerem, neque tenebras neque sero neque mane,

40 neither cloud nor thunder nor coruscation, nor wind nor water nor air, nor darkness nor evening nor morning,

41 neque aestatem neque ver neque aestum, neque hiemem neque gelum neque frigus, neque grandinem neque pluviam neque ros,

41 neither summer nor spring nor heat, nor winter nor frost nor frigidity, nor hail nor rain nor dew,

42 neque meridiem neque noctem neque ante lucem, neque nitorem neque claritatem neque lucem, nisi solummodo splendorem claritatis Altissimi, unde omnes incipiant videre quae anteposita sunt.

42 neither meridian nor night nor before dawn, neither brilliance nor clarity nor light, except only the splendor of the clarity of the Most High, whence all may begin to see the things which are set before them.

43 spatium enim habebit sicut ebdomada annorum.

43 for it will have a span just like a hebdomad of years.

44 hoc est iudicium meum et constitutio eius, tibi autem soli ostendi haec.

44 this is my judgment and its constitution, but to you alone I have shown these things.

45 et respondi: tunc et dixi, domine, et nunc dico: beati praesentes et observantes quae a te constituta sunt.

45 and I answered: then too I said, Lord, and now I say: blessed are those present and observing the things which have been constituted by you.

46 sed de quibus erat oratio mea, quis enim est de praesentibus qui non peccavit, vel quis natorum qui non praeterivit sponsionem tuam.

46 but concerning those about whom my prayer was, for who is there of those present who has not sinned, or who of those born who has not overstepped your pledge.

47 et nunc video, quoniam ad paucos pertinebit futurum saeculum iucunditatem facere, multis autem tormenta.

47 and now I see, that the future age will produce jocundity for a few, but for many, torments.

51 for you, because you said that there are not many just but few, while the impious, in truth, are multiplied—hear with respect to these things.

52 lapides electos si habueris paucos valde, ad numerum eorum conpones eos tibi, plumbum autem et fictile abundat.

52 if you should have very few elect stones, you will arrange them for yourself according to their number, but lead and fictile ware abound.

53 et dixi: domine, quomodo poterit?

53 and I said: lord, how will it be able?

54 et dixit ad me: non hoc solummodo, sed interroga terram et dicet tibi, adulare ei et narrabit tibi.

65 Let the race of men mourn, and let the rustic beasts rejoice; let all who have been born mourn, but the quadrupeds and the herds be gladdened.

66 multum enim melius est illis quam nobis. non enim sperant iudicium, nec enim sciunt cruciamenta nec salutem post mortem repromissam sibi.

66 for it is much better for them than for us. For they do not await judgment, nor indeed do they know torments, nor the salvation promised to them after death.

67 but what does it profit us, since, saved, we shall be saved, yet by torment we shall be tormented?

74 for how long a time it is, since the Most High has had longanimity toward those who inhabit the age, and not on account of them, but on account of the times which he has foreprovided.

75 et respondi et dixi: si inveni gratiam coram te, domine demonstra et hoc servo tuo, si post mortem vel nunc quando reddemus unusquisque animam suam, si conservati conservabimur in requie, donec veniant tempora illa in quibus incipies creaturam renovare aut amodo cruciabimur?

75 And I answered and said: If I have found grace before you, Lord, show this also to your servant: whether, after death or now when each of us renders back his soul, we, kept safe, shall be kept in rest until those times come in which you begin to renew the creation, or from now on shall we be tormented?

78 for the discourse concerning death: when the limit of the decree has gone forth from the Most High that a man should die, with the inspiration withdrawing from the body to be sent back again to him who gave it, to adore first the glory of the Most High.

79 et si quidem esset eorum qui spreverunt et non servaverunt viam Altissimi et eorum qui contempserunt legem eius et eorum qui oderunt eos qui timent Deum,

79 and if indeed it were of those who spurned and did not keep the way of the Most High, and of those who contemned his law, and of those who hated those who fear God,

80 haec inspirationes inhabitationes non ingredientur, sed vagantes erunt amodo in cruciamentis, dolentes semper et tristes, per septem vias.

80 these inspirations will not enter into habitations, but, wandering from now on in torments, always grieving and sad, through seven ways.

5 you agreed to disobey and you set out unwilling; for indeed no space has been given to you except only to live a little.

6 o Domine super nos, si permittes servo tuo, ut oremus coram te et des nobis semen cordis et sensui culturam unde fructum fiat, unde vivere possit omnis corruptus qui portabit locum hominis.

6 O Lord over us, if you will permit your servant, that we may pray before you and give us seed of the heart and cultivation to the sense, whence fruit may come to be, whence every corrupted one who will bear the place of man may be able to live.

7 solus enim es, et una plasmatio nos sumus manuum tuarum, sicut locutus es.

7 for you are alone, and we are one formation of your hands, as you have spoken.

8 and since you now vivify in the womb the body that has been molded and you furnish its members, your creation is preserved in fire and water, and for nine months it endures your formation—your creature which has been created in it.

9 ipsum autem quod servat et quod servatur utraque servabuntur servatione tua. et quando iterum reddit matrix quae in ea creverint,

9 but the very thing that preserves and that which is preserved—both will be preserved by your preservation. and when again the matrix gives back those which have grown in it,

10 imperasti ut ex ipsis membris, hoc est mamillis, praebere lac, fructum mamillarum.

10 you have commanded that from those very members, that is, the breasts, milk be provided, the fruit of the breasts.

11 ut nutriatur id quod plasmatum est usque in tempus aliquem. et postea dispones eum tuae misericordiae,

11 so that what has been fashioned may be nourished until a certain time. and afterwards you will dispose him to your mercy,

12 enutristi eum tuae iustitiae, et erudisti eum in lege tua et corripuisti eum tuo intellectu,

12 you nurtured him by your justice, and you educated him in your law and you corrected him by your intellect,

13 et mortificabis eum ut tuam creaturam et vivificabis eum ut tuum opus.

13 and you will mortify him as your creature and you will vivify him as your work.

14 si ergo perdideris qui tantis laboribus plasmatus est tuo iussu, facili ordine, et ut quid fiebat?

14 if therefore you destroy him who has been fashioned by such great labors at your command, with easy order, then to what end was it being done?

19 therefore hear my voice and understand my words, and I will speak before you.

26 ne aspicias populi tui delicta, sed qui tibi in veritate serviunt.

26 do not look upon the offenses of your people, but those who serve you in truth.

27 nec adtendas impie agentium studia, sed qui tua testimonia cum doloribus custodierunt.

27 nor pay heed to the pursuits of those acting impiously, but to those who have kept your testimonies with dolors.

28 neque cogites qui in conspectu tuo false conversati sunt, sed memorare qui ex voluntate tuum timorem cognoverunt.

28 nor consider those who have conducted themselves falsely in your sight, but remember those who, of their own will, have come to know the fear of you.

29 neque volueris perdere qui pecorum mores habuerunt, sed respicias eos qui legem tuam splendide docuerunt.

29 nor be willing to destroy those who have had the ways of cattle, but look upon those who have splendidly taught your law.

30 nor be indignant at those who have been judged worse than beasts, but love those who have always confided in your glory.

31 since we and our fathers have lived according to mortal mores, but you, however, on account of us sinners, will be called merciful.

32 for if you will have desired to have mercy on us, then you will be called merciful, for we, not having works of justice.

33 iusti enim, quibus sunt operae multae repositae apud te, ex propriis operibus recipient mercedem.

33 for the just, for whom many works have been reposed with you, will receive a reward from their own works.

34 quid est enim homo, ut ei indigneris, aut genus corruptibile, ut ita amariceris de ipso.

34 for what is man, that you are indignant at him, or a corruptible race, that you are thus embittered about him.

35 in veritate enim nemo de genitis est qui non impie gessit, et de confitentibus qui non deliquit.

35 for in truth there is no one among the born who has not acted impiously, and among the confessing, none who has not been delinquent.

36 in hoc enim adnuntiabitur iustitia tua, et bonitas tua Domine, cum misertus fueris eis qui non habent substantiam operum bonorum.

36 for in this your justice will be announced, and your goodness, O Lord, when you have had mercy upon those who do not have the substance of good works.

38 for truly I will not think upon the formation of those who have sinned, either death or judgment or perdition,

39 sed iucundabor super iustorum figmentum, peregrinationes quoque et salvationes et mercedis receptiones.

39 but I will rejoice over the formation of the righteous, their peregrinations also and salvations and receptions of reward.

40 quomodo ergo locutus sum, sic et est.

40 Therefore, as I have spoken, so it is.

41 sicut enim agricola serit super terram semina multa et plantationis multitudinem plantat, sed non in tempore non omnia quae seminata sunt salvabuntur, sed nec omnia quae plantata sunt radicabunt, sic et qui in saeculo seminati sunt non omnes salvabuntur.

41 for just as the farmer sows many seeds upon the earth and plants a multitude of plantings, yet, when the time comes, not all the things that have been sown will be saved, nor will all the things that have been planted take root, so also those who have been sown in the world will not all be saved.

42 et respondi et dixi: si inveni gratiam loquar.

42 and I answered and said: if I have found grace, let me speak.

43 quoniam semen agricolae, si non ascenderit -- non enim accepit pluviam tuam in tempore -- et si corruptum fuerit multitudine pluviae,

43 since the farmer’s seed, if it does not come up -- for it did not receive your rain in season -- and if it has been corrupted by a multitude of rain,

44 hoc perit; sed homo qui manibus tuis plasmatus est et tuae imagini nominatus, quoniam similatus est per quem omnia plasmasti, et similasti eum semini agricolae.

44 this perishes; but the man who has been formed by your hands and designated to your image, since he has been likened to him through whom you fashioned all things, you have likened him also to the seed of the farmer.

45 non super nos, sed parce populo tuo et miserere hereditati tuae, tuae enim creaturae misereris.

45 not upon us, but spare your people and have mercy on your inheritance, for you have mercy on your creation.

46 et respondit ad me et dixit: quae sunt praesentia praesentibus et quae futura futuris.

49 because you have humbled yourself, as befits you, and you have not judged yourself among the just. you shall be exceedingly glorified,

50 propter quod miseriae multae miserabiles efficientur qui inhabitant saeculum in novissimis, quia in multa superbia ambulaverunt.

50 on account of which many miserable miseries will be effected for those who inhabit the age in the last times, because they have walked in much pride.

51 tu autem pro te intellege et de similibus tuis inquire gloriam.

51 but you, understand for yourself, and inquire about the glory of those similar to you.

52 vobis enim apertus est paradisus, plantata est arbor vitae, praeparatum est futurum tempus praeparata est abundantia, aedificata est civitas, probata est requies, perfecta est bonitas ante perfecta sapientia.

52 for to you Paradise has been opened, the tree of life has been planted, the future time has been prepared, abundance has been prepared, the city has been built, rest has been approved, goodness has been perfected, wisdom having been perfected beforehand.

53 radix signata est a vobis, infirmitas extincta est a vobis et mors absconsa est, infernum fugit et corruptio in oblivionem.

53 the root has been sealed by you, infirmity has been extinguished by you and death has been hidden, hell has fled and corruption has gone into oblivion.

54 transierunt dolores et ostensus est in finem thesaurus inmortalitatis.

54 pains have passed, and the treasure of immortality has been shown unto the end.

55 noli ergo adicere inquirendo de multitudine eorum qui pereunt.

55 do not therefore add by inquiring about the multitude of those who perish.

56 nam et ipsi accipientes libertatem spreverunt Altissimum et legem eius contempserunt et vias eius dereliquerunt.

56 For even they themselves, having received liberty, spurned the Most High, and contemned his law, and abandoned his ways.

57 adhuc autem et iustos eius conculcaverunt.

57 and, moreover, they even trampled his just ones.

58 et dixerunt in corde suo non esse Deum, et quidem scientes quoniam moriuntur.

58 and they said in their heart that there is no God, and indeed knowing that they die.

59 sicut enim vos suscipient quae praedicta sunt, sic eos sitis et cruciatus quae praeparata sunt, non enim Altissimus vo v. A. A hominem disperdi.

59 for just as the things that have been foretold will receive you, so thirst and torments which have been prepared will receive them; for the Most High does not will man to be destroyed.

60 sed ipsi qui creati sunt coinquinaverunt nomen eius qui fecit eos, et ingrati fuerunt ei qui praeparavit eis nunc vitam.

60 but they themselves who have been created have defiled the name of him who made them, and were ungrateful to him who prepared life for them now.

61 wherefore my judgment now draws near,

62 quod non omnibus demonstravi nisi tibi et tibi similibus paucis. et respondi et dixi:

62 which I have not demonstrated to all except to you and to a few like you. And I responded and said:

63 ecce nunc, Domine, demonstrasti mihi multitudinem signorum quae incipies facere in novissimis, sed non demonstrasti mihi quo tempore.

63 behold now, Lord, you have shown me the multitude of signs which you will begin to do in the last times, but you have not shown me at what time.

1 et respondit ad me et dixit: metiens metire in temet ipso, et erit cum videris, quoniam transivit pars quaedam signorum quae praedicta sunt,

1 and he responded to me and said: measuring, measure in your very self, and it shall be, when you see, that a certain part of the signs which have been predicted has passed,

2 tunc intelleges, quoniam ipsud est tempus, in quo incipiet Altissimus visitare saeculum qui ab eo factus est.

2 then you will understand, that this is the time in which the Most High will begin to visit the age which was made by him.

3 et quando videbitur in saeculo motio locorum, populorum turbatio, gentium cogitationes, ducum inconstantia, principum turbatio.

3 and when in the world there shall be seen motion of places, perturbation of peoples, cogitations of nations, inconstancy of leaders, perturbation of princes.

4 et tunc intelleges, quoniam de his erat Altissimus locutus a diebus qui fuerunt ante ab initio.

4 and then you will understand that concerning these things the Most High had spoken from the days that were before, from the beginning.

5 sicut enim omne quod factum est in saeculo, initium per consummationem et consummatio manifesta,

5 for just as everything that has been made in the world has a beginning and a consummation, and the consummation is manifest,

6 sic et Altissimi tempora, initia manifesta in prodigiis et virtutibus, et consummatio in actu et in signis.

6 so also the times of the Most High: beginnings manifest in prodigies and powers, and the consummation in act and in signs.

7 et erit, omnis qui salvus factus fuerit et qui poterit effugere per opera sua vel per fidem in qua credidit, is

7 and it will be, everyone who will have been made safe and who will be able to escape through his works or through the faith in which he has believed, he

8 relinquetur de praedictis periculis et videbit salutare meum in terra mea et in finibus meis, quae sanctificavi mihi a saeculo.

8 he will be spared from the aforesaid perils and will see my salvation in my land and within my borders, which I have sanctified for myself from of old.

9 et tunc mirabuntur qui nunc abusi sunt vias meas, et in cruciamentis commorabuntur hii qui eos proiecerunt in contemptu.

9 and then they will marvel who now have abused my ways, and in torments will linger those who cast them forth in contempt.

10 quotquot enim non cognoverunt me viventes beneficia consecuti,

10 for as many as did not know me while living, having obtained benefits,

11 et quotquot fastidierunt legem meam, cum adhuc erant habentes libertatem,

11 and as many as have disdained my law, while they still were having liberty,

12 et cum adhuc esset eis apertum paenitentiae locus non intellexerunt sed spreverunt, hos oportet post mortem in cruciamento cognoscere.

12 and while the place of repentance was still open to them, they did not understand but despised; these must, after death, come to know this in torment.

13 tu ergo adhuc noli curiosus esse quomodo impii cruciabuntur, sed inquire quomodo iusti salvabuntur, et quorum saeculum et propter quos saeculum et quando.

13 you therefore, for now, do not be curious how the impious will be tormented, but inquire how the just will be saved, and whose the age is, and for whose sake the age is, and when.

14 respondi et dixi:

15 olim locutus sum et nunc dico et postea dicam, quoniam plures sunt qui pereunt quam qui salvabuntur,

15 once I spoke, and now I say, and afterward I will say, since more are those who perish than those who will be saved,

16 sicut multiplicat fluctus super guttam. et respondit ad me et dixit:

16 just as the wave multiplies over a drop. And he responded to me and said:

17 qualis ager, talia et semina, et quales flores, tales et tincturae, et qualis opera, talis et creatio, et qualis agricola, talis et area. quoniam tempus erat saeculi,

17 such as the field, such also the seeds, and what sort the flowers, such the tinctures, and what sort the work, such the creation, and what sort the farmer, such the threshing-floor. since it was the time of the age,

18 et tunc cum essem parans eis, his qui nunc, antequam fieret illis saeculum in quo inhabitarent, et nemo contradixit mihi

18 and then, when I was preparing for them, for these who are now, before the age was made for them in which they would dwell, and no one contradicted me

19 tunc, nec enim erat quisquam, et nunc creati in hoc mundo parato et mensa indeficienti et lege investigabili, corrupti sunt moribus eorum.

19 then—for there was no one—and now, created in this prepared world and with an unfailing table and an investigable law, they have been corrupted by their customs.

20 et consideravi saeculum meum, et ecce erat perditum et orbem meum, et ecce erat periculi propter cogitationes quae in eo advenerunt.

20 and I considered my age, and behold, it was ruined; and my orb, and behold, it was in peril because of the cogitations which had come upon it.

21 Et vidi et peperci eis vix valde, et salvavi mihi acinum de botru et plantationem de tribu multa.

21 And I saw, and I spared them, though scarcely indeed, and I saved for myself an acinus from the cluster, and a plantation from a great tribe.

22 pereat ergo multitudo quae sine causa nata est, et servetur acinus meus et plantatio mea, quia cum multo labore perfeci haec.

22 let the multitude therefore perish which was born without cause, and let my acinus (grape-berry) and my plantation be preserved, because with much labor I have perfected these.

23 tu autem si adhuc intermittas septem dies alios, sed non ieiunabis in eis,

23 but you, if you still intermit seven other days, yet you will not fast in them,

24 ibis autem in campum florum, ubi domus non est aedificata, et manduca solummodo de floribus campi, et carnem non gustabis et vinum non bibes sed solummodo flores,

24 but you will go into the field of flowers, where a house has not been built, and eat only from the flowers of the field, and you will not taste flesh and you will not drink wine but only flowers,

25 et deprecare Altissimum sine intermissione, et veniam et loquar tecum.

25 and beseech the Most High without intermission, and I will come and speak with you.

26 et profectus sum, sicut dixit mihi, in campum quod vocatur Ardat, et sedi ibi in floribus et de herbis agri manducavi et facta est esca earum mihi in saturitatem.

26 and I set out, as he said to me, to the field which is called Ardat, and I sat there among the flowers and I ate of the grasses of the field, and their food was for me unto satiety.

27 et factum est post dies septem, et ego discumbebam supra faenum et cor meum iterum turbabatur sicut et ante.

27 and it came to pass after seven days, and I was reclining upon hay, and my heart was again troubled just as before.

28 et apertum est os meum et inchoavi dicere coram Altissimo et dixi:

29 o Domine, in nobis ostendens ostensus es patribus nostris in deserto, quando erant exientes de Aegypto et quando veniebant in deserto quod non calcatur et infructuoso, et dicens dixisti:

29 O Lord, showing yourself among us, you were shown to our fathers in the desert, when they were going out from Egypt and when they came into the desert that is not trodden and unfruitful, and, saying, you said:

30 tu Israhel audi me, et semen Iacob intendite sermonibus meis.

30 You, Israel, hear me, and seed of Jacob, attend to my words.

31 ecce enim ego semino in vobis legem meam, et faciet in vobis fructum, et glorificamini in eo per saeculum.

31 for behold, I sow my law in you, and it will bear fruit in you, and you will be glorified in it for the age.

32 nam patres nostri accipientes legem non servaverunt et legitima mea non custodierunt. et factum est fructum legis non periens; nec enim poterat, quoniam tuus erat.

32 for our fathers, having received the law, did not keep it, and my statutes they did not guard. And it came to pass: the fruit of the law did not perish; nor indeed could it, since it was yours.

33 for those who received it perished, not keeping what had been sown in them.

34 et ecce consuetudo est ut, cum acceperit terra semen vel navem mare vel vas aliud escas vel potus,, et cum fuerit ut exterminetur

34 and behold there is a custom that, when the earth has received seed or the sea a ship or another vessel foods or drinks,, and when it shall have been that it is to be exterminated

35 quod seminatum est vel quod missum est vel quae suscepta sunt, exterminentur haec, susceptoria vero manent. apud nos si enim non sic factum est.

35 what has been sown or what has been sent or the things which have been received—let these be exterminated; the receptacles indeed remain. with us, for if it has not been done thus.

36 nos quidem qui legem accepimus peccantes peribimus et cor nostrum quod suscepit eam.

36 we indeed, we who have received the law, sinning shall perish, and our heart which has received it.

37 nam lex non perit sed permanet in suo honore.

37 for the law does not perish but remains in its honor.

38 et cum loquor haec in corde meo, et respexi oculis meis et vidi mulierem in dextera parte, et ecce haec lugebat et plorabat cum voce magna, et animo dolebat valde, et vestimenta eius discisa et cinis super caput eius.

38 and while I was speaking these things in my heart, I looked with my eyes and saw a woman on the right-hand side, and behold, she was mourning and weeping with a great voice, and in spirit she grieved greatly, and her garments were torn, and ash was upon her head.

39 et dimisi cogitatus in quibus eram cogitans et conversus sum ad eam et dixi ei:

39 and I dismissed the thoughts in which I was engaged, and I turned to her and said to her:

40 ut quid fles et quid doles animo? et dixit ad me:

40 why do you weep, and why do you grieve in spirit? And she said to me:

41 dimitte me, dominus meus, ut defleam me et adiciam dolorem, quoniam valde amara sum animo et humiliata sum valde.

41 dismiss me, my lord, that I may bewail myself and add sorrow, for I am very bitter in spirit and I am very much humbled.

42 et dixi ei: quid passa es, dic mihi. et dixit ad me:

42 and I said to her: what have you suffered, tell me. and she said to me:

43 sterilis fui ego famula tua et non peperi habens maritum annis triginta.

43 I, your handmaid, was sterile and did not bear, having a husband for thirty years.

44 ego enim per singulas horas et per singulos dies in annis triginta his deprecabar Altissimum nocte ac die.

44 for I, through every hour and through every day, for these thirty years, was beseeching the Most High by night and by day.

45 et factum est post triginta annos, exaudivit me Deus ancillae tuae et pervidit humilitatem meam et adtendit tribulationi meae et dedit mihi filium. et iucundata sum super eum valde ego et vir meus et omnes cives mei, et honorificabamus valde Fortem.

45 and it came to pass after thirty years, God hearkened to me, your handmaid, and perceived my humility and attended to my tribulation and gave me a son. And I rejoiced greatly over him, I and my husband and all my fellow citizens, and we greatly honored the Mighty One.

46 et nutrivi eum cum labore multo.

46 and I nourished him with much labor.

47 and it came to pass, when he had grown and I had come to take for him a wife, that I made a day of banquet.

3 and it came to pass, when all had rested to console me so that I might rest, that I rose at night and fled and came, as you see, into this field.

4 et cogito iam non reverti in civitatem sed hic consistere, et neque manducabo neque bibam, sed sine intermissione lugere et ieiunare usque dum moriar.

4 and I am thinking now not to return to the city but to remain here, and neither will I eat nor drink, but to mourn and to fast without intermission until I die.

5 et dereliqui adhuc sermones in quibus eram et respondi cum iracundia ad eam et dixi:

5 and I relinquished the discourses in which I still was engaged, and I responded to her with anger and said:

6 stulta super omnes mulieres, non vides luctum nostrum et quae nobis contigerunt.

6 foolish above all women, do you not see our mourning and the things that have befallen us.

7 quoniam Sion mater nostra omnium in tristitia contristatur et humilitate humiliata est. lugete validissime

7 because Zion, the mother of us all, is grieved in sadness and has been humbled in humility. mourn most mightily

8 et nunc quoniam omnes lugemus, et tristes este quoniam omnes contristati sumus. tu autem contristaris in uno filio.

8 and now since we all mourn, be sorrowful, for we have all been saddened. but you, however, are saddened over one son.

9 interroga enim terram et dicet tibi, quoniam haec est quae debeat lugere tantorum superstes germinantium.

9 For ask the earth, and it will tell you, since she is the one who ought to mourn, survivor of so many germinating ones.

10 et ex ipsa initio omnes nati et alii venient, et ecce paene omnes in perditionem ambulant et in exterminium fit multitudo eorum.

10 and from her in the beginning all were born and others will come, and behold, nearly all walk into perdition and into extermination their multitude becomes.

11 et quis ergo debet lugere magis nisi haec quae tam magnam multitudinem perdidit, quam tu quae pro uno doles? si autem dices mihi

11 and who, then, ought to lament more, if not this, which has lost so great a multitude, than you, who grieve for one? if, however, you say to me

12 quoniam non est similis planctus meus terrae, quoniam fructum ventris mei perdidi, quem cum maeroribus peperi et cum doloribus genui,

12 for my lamentation is not like that of the earth, since I have lost the fruit of my womb, whom I bore with sorrows and brought forth with pains,

13 terra autem secundum viam terrae, abiit quae in ea multitudo praesens quomodo et venit et ego tibi dico:

13 but the earth, according to the way of the earth, the present multitude that is in it has departed just as it came, and I say to you:

14 sicut tu cum dolore peperisti, sic et terra dedit fructum suum hominem ab initio ei qui fecit eam.

14 just as you brought forth with dolor, so also the earth gave its fruit—man—from the beginning to him who made it.

15 nunc ergo retine apud temet ipsam dolorem tuum et fortiter fer quae tibi contigerunt casus.

15 Now therefore retain with yourself your very pain, and bear with fortitude the chances that have befallen you.

16 si enim iustificaveris terminum Dei, et filium tuum recipies in tempore et in mulieribus conlaudaberis.

16 for if indeed you justify the term set by God, you will receive your son in due time, and among women you will be praised.

17 ingredere ergo in civitatem ad virum tuum. et dixit ad me:

17 therefore enter into the city to your husband. and she said to me:

18 non faciam neque ingrediar civitatem, sed hic moriar.

18 I will not do it, nor will I enter the city, but here I will die.

19 et adposui adhuc loqui ad eam et dixi:

19 and I added further to speak to her and I said:

20 noli facere sermonem hunc, sed consenti persuaderi -- quid enim casus Sion -- et consolare propter dolorem Hierusalem.

20 do not make this discourse, but consent to be persuaded -- for what indeed is the fall of Zion -- and be consoled on account of the grief of Jerusalem.

21 vides enim, quoniam sanctificatio nostra deserta effecta est et altare nostrum demolitum est et templum nostrum destructum est,

21 for you see that our sanctuary has been made desolate, and our altar has been demolished, and our temple has been destroyed,

22 et psalterium nostrum humiliatum est et hymnus noster conticuit et exultatio nostra dissoluta est, et lumen candelabri nostri extinctum est et arca testamenti nostri direpta est et sancta nostra contaminata sunt, et nomen quod nominatum est super nos paene profanatum est, et liberi nostri contumeliam passi sunt, et sacerdotes nostri succensi sunt et Levitae nostri in captivitate abierunt, et virgines nostrae coinquinatae sunt et mulieres nostrae vim passae sunt, et iusti nostri rapti sunt et parvuli nostri proditi sunt, et iuvenes nostri servierunt et fortes nostri invalidi facti sunt.

22 and our psaltery has been humbled and our hymn has fallen silent and our exultation has been dissolved, and the light of our lampstand has been extinguished and the ark of our covenant has been plundered and our holy things have been contaminated, and the name that was named upon us has been almost profaned, and our children have suffered contumely, and our priests have been burned and our Levites have gone into captivity, and our virgins have been defiled and our women have suffered violence, and our just have been snatched away and our little ones have been betrayed, and our youths have served in bondage and our strong men have been made weak.

23 et quod omnium maius, signaculum Sion, quoniam resignata est de gloria sua nunc et tradita est in manibus eorum qui nos oderunt.

23 and, what is greatest of all, the seal of Zion, for it has now been unsealed from its glory and delivered into the hands of those who hate us.

24 tu ergo excute tuam multam tristitiam et depone abs te multitudinem dolorum, ut tibi repropitietur Fortis et requiem faciat tibi Altissimus, requietionem laborum.

24 you, therefore, shake off your great sadness, and lay down from yourself the multitude of sorrows, so that the Strong One may be repropitiated toward you and the Most High may make for you repose, a rest from labors.

25 et factum est cum loquebar ad eam, et ecce facies eius fulgebat valde subito, et species coruscus fiebat visus eius, ut etiam paverem valde ad eam, et cogitarem quid esset hoc.

25 and it came to pass while I was speaking to her, and behold, her face was shining very greatly, suddenly, and the appearance of her visage became coruscant, so that I even greatly feared before her, and I pondered what this was.

26 et ecce subito emisit sonum vocis magnum timore plenum, ut commoveretur terra a sono. et vidi,

26 and behold, suddenly she emitted a great sound of voice, full of fear, so that the earth was stirred by the sound. And I saw,

27 et ecce amplius mulier non conparebat mihi, sed civitas aedificabatur et locus demonstrabatur de fundamentis magnis. et timui et clamavi voce magna et dixi:

37 now therefore I beseech you, that you demonstrate to your servant concerning this passing. and he answered me and said:

38 audi me, et doceam te et dicam tibi de quibus times, quoniam Altissimus revelavit tibi mysteria multa.

38 hear me, and I will teach you and I will tell you about the things you fear, since the Most High has revealed to you many mysteries.

39 vidit rectam viam tuam quoniam sine intermissione contristabaris pro populo tuo et valde lugebas propter Sion.

39 He saw your straight way, since without intermission you were grieving for your people and were greatly mourning on account of Zion.

40 hic ergo intellectus visionis: mulier quae tibi apparuit ante paululum,

40 here, therefore, is the understanding of the vision: the woman who appeared to you a little while ago,

41 quam vidisti lugentem et inchoasti consolare eam,

41 whom you saw lamenting, and you began to console her,

42 nunc autem iam non speciem mulieris vides, sed apparuit tibi civitas aedificari.

42 but now you no longer see the appearance of a woman, but a city has appeared to you being built.

43 et quoniam enarrabat tibi de casu filii sui, haec absolutio est:

43 and since she was narrating to you about the fall of her son, this is the solution:

44 haec mulier quam vidisti haec est Sion, quam nunc conspicis ut civitatem aedificatam.

44 This woman whom you saw, this is Zion, which you now behold as a city built.

45 et quoniam dixit tibi, quia sterilis fuit annis triginta, propter quod erant anni saeculo tria milia, quando non erat in ea adhuc oblatio oblata.

45 and since she told you that she was sterile for thirty years, because there were in the age three thousand years, when as yet no oblation had been offered in her.

46 et factum est post annos tres, et aedificavit Salomon civitatem et obtulit oblationes. tunc fuit quando peperit sterilis filium.

46 and it came to pass after three years, and Solomon built the city and offered oblations. then it was when the barren woman bore a son.

47 et quod tibi dixit quoniam nutrivi eum cum labore, haec erat habitatio Hierusalem.

47 and what she said to you, that I nourished him with labor, this was the habitation of Jerusalem.

48 et quoniam dixit tibi quod filius meus veniens in suo thalamo mortuus esset et contigisset ei casus, haec erat quae facta est ruina Hierusalem.

48 and because she said to you that my son, coming into his bridal chamber, had died and that an accident had happened to him, this was that ruin of Jerusalem which was brought to pass.

49 et ecce vidisti similitudinem eius, quomodo filium luget, et tu inchoasti consolare eam de his quae contigerunt. haec erant tibi aperienda.

49 and behold you saw her similitude, how she laments her son, and you inchoated to console her about the things that have befallen. these were to be disclosed to you.

50 et nunc videns Altissimus, quoniam ex animo contristatus es et quoniam ex toto corde pateris pro ea, ostendit tibi claritatem gloriae eius et pulchritudinem decoris eius.

50 and now, the Most High, seeing that you have been saddened from the soul and that you suffer with all your heart on her behalf, shows to you the clarity of her glory and the pulchritude of her adornment.

51 propterea enim dixi tibi, ut maneres in campo, ubi domus non est aedificata.

51 for this reason indeed I said to you, that you should remain in the field, where no house has been built.

52 sciebam enim ego, quoniam Altissimus incipiebat tibi ostendere haec.

52 for I knew, I, that the Most High was beginning to show these things to you.

53 propterea dixi tibi, ut venires in agrum, ubi non est fundamentum aedificii.

53 therefore I said to you, that you should come into the field, where there is no foundation of an edifice.

54 nec enim poterat opus aedificii hominis sustinere in loco, ubi incipiebat Altissimi civitas ostendi.

54 for the work of a human edifice could not stand in the place where the city of the Most High was beginning to be shown.

55 tu ergo noli timere neque expavescat cor tuum, sed ingredere et vide splendorem vel magnitudinem aedificii, quantum capax est tibi visu oculorum videre.

55 You, therefore, do not fear, nor let your heart be terrified, but enter and see the splendor and the magnitude of the edifice, as much as is capable for you, by the vision of your eyes, to see.

56 et post haec audies, quantum capit auditus aurium tuarum audire.

56 and after these things you will hear, as much as the hearing of your ears is capable of hearing.

57 tu enim beatus es prae multis et vocatus es apud Altissimum sicut et pauci.

57 for you are blessed above many and have been called in the presence of the Most High, as also few are.

58 nocte autem quae in crastinum futura est manebis hic,

58 but in the night which is to be toward the morrow, you will remain here,

59 et ostendet tibi Altissimus eas visiones somniorum, quae faciet Altissimus his qui inhabitant super terram a novissimis diebus.

59 and the Most High will show to you those visions of dreams, which the Most High will perform for those who inhabit upon the earth in the last days.

60 et dormivi illam noctem et aliam sicut dixerat mihi.

60 and I slept that night and another, just as he had said to me.

2 and I saw, and behold, it was spreading its wings over all the earth, and all the winds of heaven were blowing toward it, and clouds were gathering to it.

3 and I saw, and from her feathers there were born contrary feathers, and they themselves became little feathers, small ones.

6 and I saw how all things that are under the heaven were subjected to it, and no one contradicted it, nor a single one of the creatures that are upon the earth.

7 and I saw, and behold, the eagle rose upon its talons and sent forth a voice with its wings, saying:

8 nolite omnes simul vigilare, dormite unusquisque in loco suo et per tempus vigilate,

8 do not all keep watch at the same time, let each sleep in his own place and keep watch by turns,

9 capita autem in novissimo serventur.

9 but let the heads be kept at the very end.

10 et vidi, et ecce vox non exiebat de capitibus eius, sed de medietate corporis eius.

10 and I saw, and behold, a voice was not issuing from his heads, but from the middle of his body.

11 et numeravi contrarias pinnas eius, et ecce ipsae erant octo.

11 and I counted its opposite pinions, and behold, they themselves were eight.

12 et vidi, et ecce a dextera parte surrexit una pinna et regnavit super omnem terram.

12 and I saw, and behold, from the right-hand side there rose up one pinion, and it reigned over all the earth.

13 and it came to pass, while it was reigning, that an end came to it and it did not appear, so that its place did not appear. And the following one rose up and was reigning, and it too held the time for a long while.

14 et factum est cum regnaret, et veniebat finis eius, ut non appareret sicut prior.

14 and it came to pass, while it was reigning and its end was approaching, that it did not appear as the prior.

15 et ecce vox emissa est illi dicens:

15 and behold, a voice was sent forth to him, saying:

16 audi, tu quae toto tempore tenuisti terram, hoc adnuntii, antequam incipias non parere:

16 listen, you who have held the earth all this time, announce this, before you begin to disobey:

17 nemo post te tenebit tempus tuum, sed nec dimidium eius.

17 no one after you will hold your time, not even half of it.

18 et levavit se tertia et tenuit principatum sicut priores, et non apparuit et ipsa.

18 and the third raised herself and held the principate just like the prior ones, and she too did not appear.

19 et sic contingebat omnibus alis singillatim principatum gerere et iterum nusquam conparere.

19 and thus it befell for all the wings to bear the principate one by one, and again to appear nowhere.

20 et vidi, et ecce in tempore sequentes pinnae erigebantur et ipsae a dextera parte. ut tenerent et ipsae principatum; et ex his erant quae tenebant, sed tamen statim non conparescebant.

20 and I saw, and behold, in time the succeeding feathers were being raised, and they too from the right side. that they too might hold the principate; and from these there were those that held it, but nevertheless they did not at once appear.

21 nam et aliquae ex eis erigebantur, sed non tenebant principatum.

21 for even some of them were being raised up, but they did not hold the principate.

22 et vidi post haec, et ecce non conparuerunt duodecim pinnae et duo pinnacula.

22 and I saw after these things, and behold, the twelve wings and the two winglets did not appear.

23 et nihil superavit in corpore aquilae nisi tria capita quiescentia et sex pinnacula.

23 and nothing remained in the body of the eagle except three quiescent heads and six little pinions.

24 et vidi, et ecce de sex pinnaculis divisa sunt duo et manserunt sub capite quod est ad dexteram partem; nam quattuor manserunt in loco suo.

24 and I saw, and behold, of the six pinions two were divided and remained under the head which is on the right-hand side; for four remained in their place.

25 et vidi, et ecce hae subalares cogitabant se erigere et tenere principatus.

25 and I saw, and behold, these subalar wings were considering to raise themselves and to hold the principate.

26 et vid,i et ecce una erecta est, sed statim non conparuit.

26 and I saw, and behold, one was erected, but immediately it did not appear.

27 et secunda, et haec velocius quam prior non conparuit.

27 and the second, and this one vanished more swiftly than the former.

28 et vidi, et ecce duae quae superaverunt apud semet ipsas cogitabant et ipsae regnare.

28 and I saw, and behold, the two who had survived were cogitating among themselves to reign as well.

29 and in that, while they were cogitating, behold, one of the quiescent heads, which was the middle one, was awaking; for this was the greater of the two heads.

30 and I saw how it clasped the two heads to itself,

31 and behold, the head turned, together with those who were with it, and it devoured the two sub-wings which were thinking to reign.

32 hoc autem caput percontinuit omnem terram et dominavit qui inhabitant in ea cum labore multo, et potentatum tenuit orbem terrarum super omnes alas quae fuerunt.

32 but this head extended throughout the whole earth and dominated those who inhabit it with much labor, and it held the dominion of the orb of the lands over all the wings that were.

33 et vidi post haec, et ecce medium caput subito non conparuit, et hoc sicut alae.

33 and I saw after these things, and behold, the middle head suddenly vanished, and this just like the wings.

34 superaverunt autem duo capita, quae et ipsa similiter regnaverunt super terram et super eos qui habitant in ea.

34 but the two heads survived, which also themselves likewise reigned over the earth and over those who dwell in it.

35 et vidi, et ecce devoravit caput a dextera parte illud quod est a leva.

35 and I saw, and behold, the head on the right-hand side devoured that which is on the left.

36 et audivi vocem dicentem mihi: conspice contra te et considera quod vides.

36 and I heard a voice saying to me: look before you and consider what you see.

37 et vidi, et ecce sicut leo suscitatus de silva mugiens, et audivi quomodo emisit vocem hominis ad aquilam et dixit dicens:

37 and I saw, and behold, like a lion roused from the forest, bellowing, and I heard how he emitted the voice of a man to the eagle and said, saying:

38 audi tu, et loquar ad te, et dicit Altissimus tibi:

38 you, listen, and I will speak to you, and the Most High says to you:

39 nonne tu es, quae superasti de quattuor animalibus quae feceram regnare saeculi mei, et ut per eos veniret finis temporum meorum?

39 are you not the one who has survived from the four animals which I had made to reign in my age, and so that through them the end of my times might come?

40 et quartus veniens devicit omnia animalia quae transierunt, et potentatum tenens saeculum cum tremore multo et omnem orbem cum labore pessimo, et inhabitabant tot temporibus orbem terrarum cum dolo.

40 and the fourth, coming, vanquished all the animals that had passed, and, holding the dominion of the age with much trembling and the whole orb with most grievous toil, and they inhabited the orb of the earth for so long a time with guile.

41 et iudicasti terram non cum veritate.

41 and you judged the earth not with truth.

42 tribulasti enim mansuetos et laesisti quiescentes, odisti verum dicentes et dilexisti mendaces, et destruxisti habitationes eorum qui fructificabant, et humiliasti muros eorum qui te non nocuerunt.

42 for you have afflicted the meek and injured those at rest, you hated those speaking truth and loved liars, and you destroyed the habitations of those who were bearing fruit, and you humbled the walls of those who did you no harm.

43 et ascendit contumelia ad Altissimum et superbia tua ad Fortem.

43 and contumely ascended to the Most High and your pride to the Mighty One.

44 et respexit Altissimus super sua tempora, et ecce finita sunt et saecula eius conpleta sunt.

44 and the Most High looked upon his times, and behold, they were finished, and his ages were completed.

45 propterea non apparens non appareas, tu aquila et alae tuae horribiles et pinnacula tua pessima et capita tua maligna et ungues tui pessimi et omne corpus tuum vanum,

45 therefore, not appearing, do not appear, you eagle, and your wings horrible and your pinnacles most wicked and your heads malignant and your talons most wicked and your whole body vain,

46 uti refrigeret omnis terra et relevetur liberata de tua vi et speret iudicium et misericordiam eius qui fecit eam.

46 so that the whole earth may be refreshed and be relieved, liberated from your force, and may hope for the judgment and mercy of him who made it.

CHAPTER 12

1 et factum est dum loqueretur leo verba haec ad aquilam, et vidi,

1 and it came to pass, while the lion was speaking these words to the eagle, that I saw,

2 et ecce quod superaverat caput et non conparuit, et alae duae quae ad eum transierunt et erectae sunt ut regnarent, et erat regnum eorum exile et tumultu plenum.

2 and behold, the head that had remained did not appear, and the two wings which passed over to it were raised up to reign, and their kingdom was exiguous and full of tumult.

3 et vidi et ecce ipsa non apparescebant, et omne corpus aquilae incendebatur, et expavescebat terra valde. et ego a multo excessu mentis et a magno timore vigilavi, et dixi spiritui meo:

3 and I saw, and behold, they themselves were not appearing, and the whole body of the eagle was being set on fire, and the earth was exceedingly terrified. and I, from much ecstasy of mind and from great fear, awoke, and I said to my spirit:

4 ecce tu mihi praestitisti haec, in eo quod scrutas vias Altissimi.

4 behold, you have granted these things to me, in that you scrutinize the ways of the Most High.

5 ecce adhuc fatigatus sum animo et spiritu meo invalidus sum valde, et nec modica est in me virtus a multo timore quem expavi nocte hac.

5 behold, I am still fatigued in mind, and in my spirit I am very feeble, and there is not even slight strength in me because of the great terror which I dreaded this night.

6 nunc ergo orabo Altissimum, ut me confortet usque in finem.

6 now therefore I will pray to the Most High, that he may strengthen me unto the end.

7 et dixi: Dominator Domine, si inveni gratiam ante oculos tuos, et si iustificatus sum apud te prae multis, et si certum ascendit deprecatio mea ante faciem tuam,

7 and I said: Sovereign Lord, if I have found grace before your eyes, and if I have been justified with you above many, and if surely my supplication has ascended before your face,

8 conforta me et ostende servo tuo mihi interpretationem et distinctionem visus horribilis huius, ut plenissime consoles animam meam.

8 fortify me and show to your servant, to me, the interpretation and distinction of this horrible vision, that you may most fully console my soul.

9 dignum enim me habuisti ostendere mihi temporum finem et temporum novissima. et dixit ad me:

9 for indeed you have held me worthy to show me the end of the times and the last things of the times. and he said to me:

14 however, in it twelve kings will reign, one after another.

15 for the second, who will begin to reign, he himself will hold a longer time than any of the twelve.

16 this is the interpretation of the twelve wings which you saw.

17 and since you heard a voice which spoke, not issuing from his heads, but from the midst of his body.

18 haec est interpretatio, quoniam post tempus regni illius nascentur contentiones non modicae, et periclitabitur ut cadat, et non cadet tunc, sed iterum constituetur in suum initium.

18 this is the interpretation, since after the time of that reign not moderate contentions will arise, and it will be in peril to fall, and it will not fall then, but it will be constituted again into its own beginning.

19 et quoniam vidisti subalares octo coherentes alis eius,

19 and since you saw eight underwings cohering to its wings,

20 haec est interpretatio: exsurgent enim in ipso octo reges, quorum erunt tempora levia et anni citati, et duo quidem ex ipsis perient

20 this is the interpretation: for in it eight kings will arise, whose times will be light and years swift, and indeed two of them will perish

21 adpropinquante tempore medio, quattuor autem servabuntur in tempore, cum incipiet adpropinquare tempus eius ut finiatur, duo vero in finem servabuntur.

21 as the middle time approaches, however, four will be preserved for a time; when its time begins to draw near to be finished, indeed two will be preserved for the end.

22 et quoniam vidisti tria capita quiescentia,

22 and since you saw three heads quiescent,

23 haec est interpretatio: in novissimis eius suscitabit Altissimus tria regna et renovabit in ea multa, et dominabunt terram

23 this is the interpretation: in its last days the Most High will raise up three kingdoms and will renew many things in them, and they will dominate the earth

24 et qui inhabitant in ea cum labore multo super omnes qui fuerunt ante hos. propter hoc ipsi vocati sunt capita aquilae.

24 and those who dwell in them will toil greatly, beyond all who were before these. For this reason they themselves are called the heads of the eagle.

25 isti enim erunt qui recapitulabunt impietates eius et qui perficient novissima eius.

25 for these indeed will be the ones who will recapitulate its impieties and who will bring to completion its last things.

26 et quoniam vidisti caput maius non apparescentem, quoniam unus ex eis super lectum suum morietur, et tamen cum tormentis.

26 and since you saw the greater head not appearing, because one of them will die upon his bed, and yet with torments.

27 nam duo qui perseveraverunt, gladius eos comedet.

27 for the two who persevered, the sword will devour them.

28 unius enim gladius comedet qui cum eo, sed tamen et hic gladio in novissimis cadet.

28 for one man’s sword will devour the one who is with him, but nevertheless this one also will fall by the sword at the last.

29 et quoniam vidisti duas subalares treicientes super caput quod est a dextera parte,

29 and since you saw two underwings casting across over the head which is on the right side,

30 haec est interpretatio: hii sunt quos conservavit Altissimus in finem suam, hoc erat regnum exile et turbationis plenum,

30 this is the interpretation: these are those whom the Most High has conserved for his own end; this was a kingdom meager and full of turmoil,

31 sicut vidisti. et leonem quem vidisti de silva evigilantem mugientem et loquentem ad aquilam et arguentem eam iniustitias ipsius per omnes sermones eius, sicut audisti.

31 as you saw. and the lion which you saw, waking from the forest, roaring and speaking to the eagle, and arraigning it for its injustices through all his discourses, as you heard.

32 hic est unctus, quem reservavit Altissimus in finem ad eos et impietates ipsorum. arguet illos de iniustitiis ipsorum et infulciet coram ipsis spretiones eorum.

32 this is the Anointed, whom the Most High has reserved to the end against them and their impieties. he will reprove them for their injustices and will heap up before them their spurnings.

33 statuet enim eos primum in iudicium vivos, et erit cum arguerit eos, tunc corrumpet eos.

33 for he will set them first into judgment alive, and it shall be: when he has convicted them, then he will destroy them.

34 nam residuum populum meum liberabit cum misericordia, qui salvati sunt super fines meos, et iucundabit eos, quoadusque veniat finis, dies iudicii, de quo locutus sum tibi ab initio.

34 for the remnant of my people he will liberate with mercy, those who have been saved within my bounds, and he will gladden them, until the end comes, the day of judgment, of which I have spoken to you from the beginning.

35 hoc somnium quod vidisti, et haec interpretatio eius.

35 this is the dream that you saw, and this is its interpretation.

36 tu ergo solus dignus fuisti scire Altissimi secretum hoc.

36 you therefore alone were worthy to know this secret of the Most High.

37 scribe ergo omnia ista in libro quae vidisti, et pones ea in loco abscondito.

37 write therefore all these things that you have seen in a book, and you shall place them in a hidden place.

38 et docebis ea sapientes de populo tuo, quorum scis corda posse capere et servare secreta haec.

38 and you will teach these things to the wise of your people, whose hearts you know are able to grasp and to preserve these secrets.

39 tu autem adhuc sustine hic alios dies septem, ut tibi ostendatur quicquid visum fuerit Altissimo ostendere tibi.

39 but you, still wait here another seven days, so that there may be shown to you whatever it shall have seemed to the Most High to show to you.

40 et profectus est a me. et factum est cum audisset omnis populus, quoniam pertransierunt septem dies, et ego non fuissem reversus in civitatem, et congregavit se omnis a minimo usque ad maximum et venit ad me, et dixerunt mihi dicentes:

40 and he departed from me. And it came to pass, when all the people had heard that seven days had passed, and I had not returned into the city, that all, from the least unto the greatest, congregated and came to me, and they said to me, saying:

41 quid peccavimus tibi et quid iniuste egimus in te, quoniam derelinquens nos sedisti in loco hoc?

41 what have we sinned against you, and what have we acted unjustly toward you, since, abandoning us, you have sat in this place?

42 tu enim nobis superasti ex omnibus prophetis, sicut botrus de vindemia et sicut lucerna in loco obscuro, et sicut portus navi salvatae a tempestate.

42 for you have surpassed for us above all the prophets, like a cluster from the vintage, and like a lamp in a dark place, and like a port to a ship saved from a tempest.

43 aut non sufficiunt nobis mala quae contigerunt?

43 Or do the evils that have befallen us not suffice?

44 si ergo tu nos dereliqueris, quanto erat nobis melius, si essemus succensi et nos incendio Sion.

44 if therefore you abandon us, how much better would it have been for us, if we too had been burned in the conflagration of Zion.

45 nec enim nos meliores sumus eorum, qui ibi mortui sunt. et ploraverunt voce magna. et respondi ad eos et dixi:

45 for neither are we better than those who died there. and they wept with a loud voice. and I responded to them and said:

46 confide, Israhel, et noli tristari, tu domus Iacob.

46 Take courage, Israel, and do not be sorrowful, you house of Jacob.

47 est enim memoria vestri coram Altissimo, et Fortis non est oblitus vestri in contentione.

47 for there is a memory of you before the Most High, and the Mighty One has not forgotten you in the contention.

48 ego enim non dereliqui vos neque excessi a vobis, sed veni in hunc locum, ut deprecarer pro desolatione Sion, et ut quaererem misericordiam pro humilitate sanctificationis vestrae.

48 For I have not forsaken you nor departed from you, but I came to this place, that I might intercede for the desolation of Zion, and that I might seek mercy for the humility of your sanctification.

49 et nunc ite unusquisque vestrum in domum suam, et ego veniam ad vos post dies istos.

49 and now let each of you go to his own house, and I will come to you after these days.

50 et profectus est populus, sicut dixi, ei in civitatem.

50 and the people set out, as I said, thither into the city.

51 ego autem sedi in campo septem diebus, sicut mihi mandavit, et manducabam de floribus solummodo agri, de herbis facta est mihi esca in diebus illis.

2 and behold, from the sea a wind was rising up, so as to disturb all its waves.

3 et vidi, et ecce convolabat ipse homo cum nubibus caeli. et ubi vultum suum convertebat ut consideraret, tremebant omnia quae sub eo videbantur.

3 and I saw, and behold, the man himself was flying with the clouds of heaven. and wherever he turned his face to consider, all things that were seen beneath him trembled.

4 et ubicumque exiebat vox de ore eius, ardescebant omnes qui audiebant voces eius. sicut liquescit cera quando senserit ignem.

4 and wherever the voice issued from his mouth, all who heard his voices were set ablaze, just as wax liquefies when it senses fire.

5 et vidi post haec, et ecce congregabatur multitudo hominum, quorum non erat numerus, de quattuor ventis caeli, ut debellarent hominem qui ascenderat de mari.

5 and I saw after these things, and behold, a multitude of men was being gathered, whose number was without number, from the four winds of heaven, in order to debellate the man who had ascended from the sea.

6 et vidi, et ecce sibimet ipso sculpsit montem magnum et volavit super eum.

6 and I saw, and behold, he sculpted for himself a great mountain and flew upon it.

7 ego autem quaesivi videre regionem vel locum, unde sculptus esset mons, et non potui.

7 but I sought to see the region or the place from where the mountain had been sculpted, and I could not.

8 et post haec vidi, et ecce omnes, qui congregati sunt ad eum ut expugnarent eum, timebant valde, tamen audebant pugnare.

8 and after these things I saw, and behold, all who were congregated to him to storm him were very much afraid, yet they dared to fight.

9 et ecce ut vidit impetum multitudinis venientis, non levavit manum suam neque frameam tenebat neque aliquod vas bellicosum, nisi solummodo vidi,

9 and behold, when he saw the impetus of the coming multitude, he did not raise his hand nor did he hold a spear nor any martial implement, except only I saw,

10 quomodo emittit de ore suo sicut fluctum ignis, et de labiis eius spiritum flammae, et de lingua eius emittebat scintillas tempestatis. et commixta sunt simul omnia haec, fluctus et multitudo tempestat

10 how he sends forth from his mouth like a surge of fire, and from his lips a spirit of flame, and from his tongue he was emitting sparks of tempest. and all these were commixed together at once, the surge and a multitude of tempest

11 et concidit super multitudinis impetum quod paratum erat pugnare, et succendit omnes, ut subito nihil videretur de innumerabili multitudine nisi solummodo pulvis cineris et fumi odor. et vidi et extiti.

11 and it fell upon the charge of the multitude, who were prepared to fight, and it set them all ablaze, so that suddenly nothing was seen of the innumerable multitude except only dust of ash and the odor of smoke. And I saw and I existed.

12 et post haec vidi ipsum hominem descendentem de monte et advocantem ad se multitudinem aliam pacificam.

12 and after these things I saw the man himself descending from the mountain and calling to himself another peaceful multitude.

13 et accedebant ad eum vultus hominum multorum, quorumdam gaudentium, quorumdam tristantium, aliqui vero alligati, aliqui adducentes ex eis qui offerebantur. et ego a multitudine pavoris expergefactus sum et deprecatus sum Altissimum et dixi:

13 and the faces of many men were approaching him, some rejoicing, some sorrowing, some indeed bound, some leading forth from them those who were being offered. and I, awakened by a multitude of fear, implored the Most High and said:

14 tu ab initio demonstrasti servo tuo mirabilia haec et dignum me habuisti, ut susciperes deprecationem meam.

14 you from the beginning demonstrated to your servant these marvels and deemed me worthy, that you might receive my supplication.

15 et nunc demonstra mihi adhuc et interpretationem somnii huius.

15 and now show me also the interpretation of this dream.

16 sicut enim existimo in sensu meo, vae qui derelicti fuerint in diebus illis, et multo plus vae his qui non sunt derelicti.

16 for, just as I deem in my mind, woe to those who will have been left behind in those days, and much more woe to those who have not been left behind.

17 qui enim non sunt derelicti, tristes erunt

17 for those who are not left behind, will be sorrowful

18 intellegentes quae sunt reposita in novissimis diebus, et non occurrentes eis. sed et qui derelicti sunt

18 understanding the things that are laid up in the last days, and not going to meet them. but also those who have been left behind

19 propter hoc vae, viderunt enim pericula magna et necessitates multas, sicut ostendunt somnia haec.

19 for this reason, woe, for they have seen great perils and many necessities, as these dreams show.

20 attamen facilius est periclitantem venire in haec, quam pertransire sicut nubem a saeculo et non videre quae contigerunt in novissimo. et respondit ad me et dixit:

20 nevertheless, it is easier for one in peril to come into these things than to pass away from the age like a cloud and not to see the things that befell at the last. And he answered me and said:

21 et visionis interpretationem dicam tibi, sed et de quibus locutus es adaperiam tibi.

21 and the interpretation of the vision I will tell to you, but also concerning the things of which you have spoken I will lay open to you.

22 quoniam dixisti de his qui derelicti sunt, et de his qui non derelicti sunt haec interpretatio:

22 since you have said about those who were left behind, and about those who were not left behind, this is the interpretation:

23 qui adferet periculum in illo tempore, ipse custodibit qui in periculo inciderint, qui habent operas et fidem ad Fortissimum.

23 he who will bring peril in that time, he himself will guard those who shall have fallen into peril, who have works and faith toward the Most Mighty.

24 scito ergo, quoniam magis beatificati sunt qui derelicti super eos qui mortui sunt.

24 know therefore, that those who have been left behind are more blessed than those who have died.

25 interpretatio enim visionis haec: quia vidisti virum ascendentem de corde maris,

25 for the interpretation of the vision is this: because you saw a man ascending from the heart of the sea,

26 ipse est quem conservat Altissimus multis temporibus, qui per semet ipsum liberabit creaturam suam, et ipse disponet qui derelicti sunt.

26 he is the one whom the Most High has preserved through many times, who by himself will liberate his creation, and he himself will set in order those who have been left behind.

27 et quoniam vidisti de ore eius exire ut spiritum et ignem et tempestatem,

27 and since you saw go out from his mouth as spirit and fire and tempest,

28 et quoniam non tenebat frameam neque vas bellicosum, corrumpit enim impetum eius multitudinis quae venerat ad expugnare eum, haec interpretatio:

28 and since he was not holding a spear nor an implement of war, for he ruins the onrush of that multitude which had come to storm him, this is the interpretation:

29 ecce dies veniunt, quando incipiet Altissimus liberare eos qui super terram sunt.

29 Behold, days are coming, when the Most High will begin to liberate those who are upon the earth.

30 et veniet excessus mentis super eos qui inhabitant terram.

30 and an ecstasy of mind will come upon those who inhabit the earth.

31 et in alisalio cogitabunt bellare, civitates civitatem et locus locum et gens ad gentem et regnum adversus regnum.

31 and one against another they will think to wage war, cities against city and place against place and nation against nation and kingdom against kingdom.

32 et erit cum fient haec et contingent signa quae ante ostendi tibi, et tunc revelabitur Filius meus quem vidisti virum ascendentem.

32 and it shall be, when these things happen and the signs come to pass which I showed to you before, then my Son will be revealed, whom you saw as a man ascending.

33 et erit quando audierint omnes gentes vocem eius, et derelinquet unusquisque regionem suam et bellum quod habent in alterutro,

33 and it shall be when all the nations hear his voice, and each will abandon his own region and the war which they have with one another,

34 et colligetur in unum multitudo innumerabilis, sicut vidisti volentes venire et expugnare eum.

34 and an innumerable multitude will be gathered into one, just as you saw, wishing to come and to assail him.

35 ipse autem stabit super cacumen montis Sion.

35 but he himself will stand upon the summit of Mount Zion.

36 Sion autem veniet et ostendetur omnibus parata et aedificata, sicut vidisti montem sculpi sine manibus.

36 But Zion will come and be shown to all, prepared and built, just as you saw the mountain being carved without hands.

37 ipse autem Filius meus arguet quae advenerunt gentes impietates eorum, has quae tempestati adpropiaverunt, et inproperabit coram eis mala cogitamenta eorum et cruciamenta quibus incipient cruciari,

37 but my Son himself will arraign the nations that have come for their impieties—those that have approached the tempest—and he will reproach before them their evil cogitations and the torments with which they will begin to be tormented,

38 quae adsimilatae sunt flammae, et perdet eos sine labore et legem quae igni adsimilata est.

38 which have been assimilated to a flame, and he will destroy them without toil by the law which is assimilated to fire.

39 et quoniam vidisti eum colligentem ad se aliam multitudinem pacificam,

39 and since you saw him gathering to himself another pacific multitude,

40 haec sunt novem tribus, quae captivae factae sunt de terra sua in diebus Iosiae regis, quem captivum duxit Salmanassar rex Assyriorum, et transtulit eos trans Flumen, et translati sunt in terram aliam.

40 these are the nine tribes, which were made captives from their own land in the days of King Josiah, whom Shalmaneser, king of the Assyrians, led away captive, and he transferred them across the River, and they were transferred into another land.

41 ipsi autem sibi dederunt consilium hoc, ut derelinquerent multitudinem gentium, et proficiscerentur in ulteriorem regionem, ubi numquam quisquam inhabitavit ibi genus humanum.

41 but they themselves gave themselves this counsel: to abandon the multitude of the nations, and to set out into a farther region, where the human race had never inhabited.

42 ut vel ibi observarent legitima sua, quae non fuerant servantes in regione sua.

42 so that at least there they might observe their own statutes, which they had not been keeping in their own region.

43 per introitus autem angustos fluminis Eufraten introierunt.

43 but through the narrow entrances of the river Euphrates they entered.

44 fecit enim eis tunc Altissimus signa, et statuit venas Fluminis usquequo transirent.

44 for then the Most High made signs for them, and set the veins of the River until they crossed.

45 per eam enim regionem erat via multa itineris anni unius et dimidii, nam regio illa vocatur Arzar et,

45 for through that region the way was of much journey—of one year and a half; for that region is called Arzar, and,

46 tunc inhabitaverunt ibi usque in novissimo tempore. et nunc iterum coeperunt venire,

46 then they inhabited there until the last time. and now again they have begun to come,

47 iterum Altissimus statuit venas Fluminis, ut possint transire, propter hoc vidisti multitudinem collectam cum pace,

47 again the Most High established the veins of the River, that they might be able to cross, because of this you saw the multitude collected with peace,

48 sed et qui derelicti sunt de populo tuo, qui invenientur intra terminum meum

48 but even those who have been left from your people, who will be found within my boundary

49 sanctum. erit ergo quando incipiet perdere multitudinem earum quae collectae sunt gentes, proteget qui superaverit populum.

49 holy. Therefore there will be a time when he begins to destroy the multitude of the nations that have been collected; he will protect the people who shall have survived.

50 et tunc ostendet eis multa plurima portenta.

50 and then he will show them many, very many portents.

51 et dixi ego: Dominator Domine, hoc mihi ostende, propter quod vidi virum ascendentem de corde maris. et dixit mihi:

51 and I said: Sovereign Lord, show me this, for what reason I saw a man ascending from the heart of the sea. And he said to me:

52 sicut non potest hoc vel scrutinare vel scire quis, quid sit in profundo maris, sic non poterit quisquam super terram videre Filium meum vel eos qui cum eo sunt nisi in tempore diei.

52 just as no one can either scrutinize this or know what is in the deep of the sea, so no one upon the earth will be able to see my Son or those who are with him except in the time of day.

53 haec est interpretatio somnii quem vidisti, et propter quod inluminatus es haec solus.

53 this is the interpretation of the dream which you saw, and on account of which you alone have been illuminated to these things.

54 dereliquisti enim tua et circa mea vacasti et legem meam exquisisti.

54 for you have left your own things and have devoted yourself to mine, and you have diligently sought my law.

55 vitam enim tuam disposuisti in sapientiam, et sensum tuum vocasti matrem.

55 for you have ordered your life in wisdom, and have called your understanding your mother.

56 et propter hoc ostendi tibi haec, merces apud Altissimum. erit enim post alios tres dies, ad te alia loquar et exponam tibi gravia et mirabilia.

56 and on account of this I have shown these things to you, there is a reward with the Most High. for after another three days, I will speak other things to you and I will expound to you weighty and marvelous things.

57 et profectus sum et transii in campum, multum glorificans et laudans Altissimum de mirabilibus, quae per tempus faciebat,

57 and I set out and crossed into the field, greatly glorifying and praising the Most High for the marvels which he was doing from time to time,

58 et quoniam gubernat tempora et quae sunt in temporibus inlata. et sedi ibi tribus diebus.

58 and since he governs the times and the things imposed in the times. and I sat there for three days.

CHAPTER 14

1 et factum est tertio die, et ego sedebam sub quercu,

1 and it happened on the third day, and I was sitting under an oak,

2 et ecce vox exivit contra me de rubo et dixit: Ezra, Ezra. et dixi: ecce ego, Domine. et surrexi super pedes meos. et dixit ad me:

2 and behold, a voice came forth toward me from the bush and said: Ezra, Ezra. And I said: behold, I, Lord. And I rose upon my feet. And he said to me:

3 revelans revelatus sum super rubum et locutus sum Moysi, quando populus meus serviebat in Aegypto.

3 revealing, I was revealed upon the bush, and I spoke to Moses, when my people was serving in Egypt.

4 et misi eum et eduxi populum meum de Aegypto, et adduxi eum super montem Sina et detinebam eum apud me diebus multis.

4 and I sent him and led out my people from Egypt, and brought him upon Mount Sinai and kept him with me for many days.

5 et enarravi ei mirabilia multa, et ostendi ei temporum secreta et temporum finem. et praecepi ei dicens:

5 and I narrated to him many marvels, and I showed him the secrets of the times and the end of the times. and I charged him, saying:

6 haec in palam facies verba et haec abscondes.

6 you shall make these words public, and these you shall conceal.

7 et nunc tibi dico:

7 and now I say to you:

8 signa quae demonstravi et somnia quae vidisti et interpretationes quas tu audisti in corde tuo repone ea.

8 the signs which I demonstrated and the dreams which you saw and the interpretations which you heard—lay them up in your heart.

9 tu enim recipieris ab hominibus, et converteris residuum cum Filio meo et cum similibus tuis, usquequo finiantur tempora.

9 for you will be received from among men, and you will be converted for the remainder with my Son and with your like, until the times are finished.

10 quoniam saeculum perdidit iuventutem suam et tempora adpropinquant senescere.

10 for the age has lost its youth, and the times are drawing near to grow old.

11 duodecim enim partibus divisum est saeculum, et transierunt eius decem iam et dimidium decimae partis,

11 for the age has been divided into twelve parts, and ten of it have already passed, and half of the tenth part,

12 superant autem eius duae prae medium decimae partis

12 however, two of it remain beyond the half of the tenth part

13 nunc ergo dispone domum tuam, et corripe populum tuum, et consolare humiles eorum, et renuntia iam corruptae vitae,

13 now therefore set your house in order, and rebuke your people, and console the humble among them, and renounce the corruptible life,

14 et dimitte abs te mortales cogitationes, et proice abs te pondera humana, et exue te iam infirmam naturam, et repone in unam partem molestissima tibi cogitamenta, et festina transmigrare a temporibus his.

14 and dismiss from yourself mortal cogitations, and cast away from yourself human burdens, and strip off now your infirm nature, and set on one side the cogitations most troublesome to you, and make haste to transmigrate from these times.

15 quae enim vidisti nunc contigisse mala, iterum horum deteriora facientur,

15 for the evils which you have seen to have happened now, again worse than these will be done,

16 quantum enim invalidum fieri saeculum a senectute, tantum multiplicabunt super inhabitantes mala,

16 for as much as the age becomes feeble from senescence, so much will the evils multiply upon the inhabitants,

17 prolongavit enim magis veritas et adpropinquavit mendacium, iam enim festinat aquila venire, quam vidisti in visionem.

17 for truth has been prolonged further and mendacity has approached; for now the eagle hastens to come, which you saw in the vision.

18 et respondi: dixi coram te, Domine.

18 and I responded: I said before you, Lord.

19 ecce enim ego abibo sicut praecepisti mihi, et corripiam praesentem populum. qui autem iterum nati fuerint, quis commonebit?

19 Behold, for I shall depart as you have commanded me, and I shall chasten the present people. But those who will be born afterwards, who will remind them?

20 positum est ergo saeculum in tenebris, et qui inhabitant in eo sine lumine,

20 therefore the age has been set in darkness, and those who inhabit in it are without light,

21 quoniam lex tua incensa est, propter quod nemo scit quae a te facta sunt vel quae incipient operae.

21 since your law has been burned, because of which no one knows what things have been done by you or what works will begin.

22 si enim inveni gratiam coram te, inmitte in me spiritum sanctum, et scribam omne quod factum est in saeculo ab initio, quae erant in lege tua scripta, ut possint homines invenire semitam, et qui voluerint vivere in novissimis vivant.

22 if indeed I have found grace before you, send into me the Holy Spirit, and I will write all that has been done in the age from the beginning—namely the things that were written in your Law—so that men may be able to find the path, and those who will to live in the last times may live.

23 et respondit ad me et dixit: vadens congrega populum et dices ad eos, ut non te quaerant diebus quadraginta.

23 and he responded to me and said: going, gather the people, and you shall say to them that they should not seek you for forty days.

25 and you will come here, and I will kindle in your heart a lamp of intellect, which will not be extinguished until the things which you begin to write are finished.

26 and when you have completed, you will make some things openly manifest, some you will hand down secretly to the wise. for on the morrow at this hour you will begin to write.

30 and they received the law of life, which they did not keep, which also you, after them, have transgressed.

31 and the land was given to you by lot in the land of Zion, and you and your fathers did iniquity and did not keep the ways which the Most High commanded you.

32 iustus iudex cum sit, abstulit a vobis in tempore quod donaverat.

32 since he is a just judge, he took away from you in time what he had bestowed.

33 et nunc vos hic estis, et fratres vestri introrsus vestrum sunt.

33 and now you are here, and your brothers are within your borders.

34 si ergo imperaveritis sensui vestro et erudieritis cor vestrum, vivi conservati eritis et post mortem misericordiam consequemini.

34 if therefore you shall have commanded your sense and shall have instructed your heart, alive you will be preserved, and after death you will obtain mercy.

35 iudicium enim post mortem veniet, quando iterum revivescemus, et tunc iustorum nomina parebunt et impiorum facta ostendentur.

35 for judgment will come after death, when we revive again, and then the names of the just will appear and the deeds of the impious will be shown.

36 ad me autem nemo accedat nunc, neque requirent me usque diebus quadraginta.

36 but let no one approach me now, nor seek me for forty days.

37 et accepi quinque viros, sicut mandavit mihi, et profecti sumus in campo et mansimus ibi.

39 and I opened my mouth, and behold, a full chalice was being proffered to me; this was full like water, but its color was like fire.

41 and my mouth was opened and was no longer closed.

42 But the Most High gave understanding to five men, and they wrote what was being said in succession, with characters which they did not know, and they sat for forty days. And they themselves wrote by day,

43 nocte autem manducabant panem; ego autem per diem loquebar et nocte non tacebam.

43 at night, however, they ate bread; but I by day was speaking, and at night I was not silent.

44 scripti sunt autem in quadraginta diebus libri nongenti quattuor.

44 and in forty days nine hundred and four books were written.

45 et factum est cum conpleti essent quadraginta dies, et locutus est Altissimus dicens: priora quae scripsisti in palam pone, et legant digni et indigni.

45 and it came to pass when forty days had been completed, and the Most High spoke, saying: set forth openly the prior things which you wrote, and let the worthy and the unworthy read.

46 novissimos autem septuaginta conservabis, ut tradas eos sapientibus de populo tuo.

46 but the last seventy you will conserve, so that you may hand them over to the wise of your people.

47 in his enim est vena intellectus et sapientiae fons et scientiae flumen. et feci sic.

47 for in them is a vein of intellect, and a fountain of sapience, and a river of knowledge. and I did so.

1 ecce loquere in aures plebi meae sermones prophetiae quos inmisero in os tuum, dicit Dominus,

1 Behold, speak into the ears of my people the sermons of prophecy which I shall send into your mouth, says the Lord,

2 et fac in carta scribi eos, quoniam fideles et veri sunt.

2 and cause them to be written on paper, since they are faithful and true.

3 ne timeas a cogitationibus adversum te, nec conturbent te incredulitates dicentium,

3 do not fear from the thoughts against you, nor let the incredulities of those speaking disturb you,

4 quoniam omnis incredulus in incredulitate sua morietur.

4 for every unbeliever will die in his incredulity.

5 ecce ego induco, dicit Dominus, super orbem terrarum mala, gladium et famem et mortem et interitum,

5 Behold, I bring in, says the Lord, upon the orb of the earth evils, sword and famine and death and destruction,

6 propter quod superposuit iniquitas omnem terram et adimpletae sunt operationes eorum.

6 for which cause iniquity has overlaid the whole land, and their operations have been fulfilled.

7 propterea dicit Dominus:

7 therefore says the Lord:

8 iam non silebo impietates eorum quae inreligiose agunt, nec sustinebo in his quae inique exercent. ecce sanguis innoxius et iustus clamat ad me, et animae iustorum clamant perseveranter.

8 I will no longer be silent about their impieties which they commit irreligiously, nor will I endure the things which they iniquitously practice. Behold, innocent and just blood cries out to me, and the souls of the just cry out perseveringly.

9 vindicans vindicabo illos, dicit Dominus, et accipiam omnem sanguinem innocuum ex illis ad me.

9 vindicating, I will vindicate them, says the Lord, and I will take to myself all innocent blood from them.

10 ecce populus meus quasi grex ad occisionem ducitur. iam non patiar illum habitare in terra Aegypti,

10 Behold, my people is being led like a flock to slaughter. I will no longer allow it to dwell in the land of Egypt,

11 sed educam eum in manu potenti et brachio excelso, et percutiam Aegyptum plaga sicut prius, et corrumpam terram omnem eius.

11 but I will lead him out with a mighty hand and an exalted arm, and I will smite Egypt with a plague as before, and I will corrupt all its land.

12 lugeat Aegyptus et fundamenta eius a plaga verberati et mastigati quam inducet Dominus.

12 let Egypt mourn, and its foundations, smitten and scourged by the plague which the Lord will bring.

13 lugeant cultores operantes terram, quoniam deficient semina eorum et vastabuntur ligna eorum ab uredine et grandine et a sidus terribile.

13 let the cultivators working the land mourn, since their seeds will fail and their trees will be laid waste by blight and hail and by the terrible star.

14 vae saeculo et qui habitant in eum.

14 woe to the world and to those who dwell in it.

15 quia adpropinquavit gladius et extritio illorum, et exsurget gens contra gentem ad pugnam, et romphea in manibus eorum.

15 for the sword has drawn near and their extirpation, and nation shall rise against nation for battle, and a rhomphaea in their hands.

16 erit enim constabilitio hominibus, alisalios supervalescentes non curabunt regem suum et principem megestanorum suorum in potentia sua.

16 for there will be sedition among men, some prevailing over others; they will not care for their king or the prince of their megistanes; their course will be in their own power.

17 concupiscet enim homo in civitatem ire et non poterit.

17 for a man will desire to go into the city and will not be able.

18 propter superbiam enim eorum civitates turbabuntur, domus exterentur, homines metuent.

18 for because of their pride the cities will be thrown into turmoil, houses will be trodden down, men will fear.

19 non miserebitur homo proximo suo ad irritum faciendum in domos eorum in gladium, ad diripiendas substantias eorum propter famem panis et tribulationem multam.

19 a man will not pity his neighbor; in order to make void he will enter into their houses with the sword, to despoil their substances because of a famine of bread and much tribulation.

20 ecce ego convoco, dicit Deus, omnes reges terrae ad movendum, qui sunt a borea et a noto et ab euro et a libano, ad convertendos in se et reddere quae dederunt illis.

20 Behold, I convoke, says God, all the kings of the earth to set in motion, who are from the north and from the south and from the east and from Lebanon, to turn back upon themselves and to render what they gave to them.

21 sicut faciunt usque hodie electis meis, sic faciam et reddam in sinum ipsorum. haec dicit Dominus Deus:

21 as they do even to this day to my elect, so will I do and repay into their own bosom. thus says the Lord God:

22 non parcet dextera mea super peccantes nec cessabit romphea super effundentes sanguinem innocuum super terram.

22 my right hand will not spare over sinners, nor will the romphea cease over those who pour out innocent blood upon the earth.

23 et exiit ignis ab ira eius et devoravit fundamenta terrae et peccatores quasi stramen incensum.

23 and a fire went out from his wrath and devoured the foundations of the earth, and sinners were like kindled straw.

24 vae eis qui peccant et non observant mandata mea, dicit Dominus,

24 woe to those who sin and do not observe my commandments, says the Lord,

25 non parcam illis, discedite, filii apostatae, nolite contaminare sanctificationem meam.

25 I will not spare them; depart, apostate sons; do not contaminate my sanctification.

26 novit Deus qui peccant in eum, propterea tradet eos in mortem et in occisionem.

26 God knows those who sin against him, therefore he will hand them over to death and to slaughter.

27 iam enim venerunt super orbem terrarum mala, et manebitis in illis; non enim liberabit vos Deus, propter quod peccastis in eum.

27 for already evils have come upon the orb of the lands, and you will remain in them; for God will not liberate you, because you have sinned against him.

28 ecce visio horribilis, et facies illius ab oriente.

28 behold, a horrible vision, and its face from the east.

29 et exient nationes draconum Arabum in curris multis, et sibilatus eorum a die itineris fertur super terram, ut etiam timeant et trepidentur omnes qui illos audient.

29 and there shall go out nations of the dragons of the Arabs in many chariots, and their hissing is carried over the earth from the day of the journey, so that even all who will hear them may fear and be terrified.

30 Carmonii insanientes in ira exient de silva et advenient in virtute magna et constabunt in pugnam cum illis et vastabunt portionem terrae Assyriorum in dentibus suis.

30 The Carmonians, raving in wrath, will go out from the forest and will arrive in great might, and they will take their stand in battle with them, and they will devastate a portion of the land of the Assyrians with their teeth.

31 et post haec supervalescet draco nativitatis memoria suae, et si converterint se conspirantes in virtute magna ad persequendos eos,

31 and after these things the dragon will grow very strong in the remembrance of his nativity, and if those conspiring turn themselves with great power to persecute them,

32 et isti turbabuntur et silebunt in virtute illorum et convertent pedes suos in fugam,

32 and these will be thrown into confusion and will fall silent at their might, and they will turn their feet to flight,

33 et a territorio Assyriorum subsessor subsedebit eos et consumet unum ex illis, et erit timor et tremor in exercitum illorum et inconstabilitio in regno illorum.

33 and from the territory of the Assyrians a besieger will sit down against them and will consume one of them, and there will be fear and trembling in their army and instability in their kingdom.

34 ecce nubs ab oriente et a septentrione usque ad meridianum, et facies illorum horrida valde, plena irae et procellae.

34 behold, a cloud from the Orient and from the Septentrion even unto the Meridian, and their faces very horrid, full of wrath and tempest.

35 et conlident se invicem et effundent sidus copiosum super terram et sidus illorum, et erit sanguis a gladio usque ad ventrem equi

35 and they will collide with one another and pour out a copious constellation upon the earth and their constellation, and there will be blood from the sword up to the belly of the horse

36 et femur hominis et suffraginem cameli. et erit timor et tremor multus super terram,

36 and the thigh of a man and the hock of a camel. and there will be much fear and trembling upon the earth,

37 et horrebunt qui videbunt iram illam, et tremor adprehendet illos. et post haec movebuntur nimbi copiosi

37 and those who will see that wrath will shudder, and a tremor will apprehend them. and after these things copious storm-clouds will be moved

38 a meridiano et septentrione, et portio alia ab occidente.

38 from the south and the north, and another portion from the west.

39 et superinvalescent venti ab oriente et recludent eum et nubem quam suscitavit in ira, et sidus ad faciendam exteritionem ab orientalem notum et occidentem violabitur.

39 and the winds from the Orient will prevail exceedingly, and they will unclose it, and the cloud which he raised in wrath, and the star for making extermination will be violated by the Orient, the Notus (south), and the Occident.

40 et exaltabuntur nubes magnae et validae plenae irae et sidus, ut exterant omnem terram et inhabitantes eam, et fundent super omnem altum et eminentem sidus terribile.

40 and great and mighty clouds, full of wrath, and a star will be exalted, so that they may exterminate all the land and its inhabitants, and they will pour out upon every high and eminent place a terrible star.

41 ignem et grandinem et rompheas volantes et aquas multas, ut etiam impleantur omnes campi et omnes rivi a plenitudine aquarum illarum.

41 fire and hail and flying rhomphae and many waters, so that even all the fields and all the rivers may be filled from the fullness of those waters.

42 et demolient civitates et muros et montes et colles et ligna silvarum et faena pratorum et frumenta eorum.

42 and they will demolish cities and walls and mountains and hills and the wood of the forests and the hay of the meadows and their grain.

43 et transibunt constanter usque Babylonem et exterent eam.

43 and they will pass through constantly as far as Babylon, and they will tread it down.

44 convenient ad ipsam et circuibunt eam et effundent sidus et omnem iram super eam, et subibit pulvis et fumus usque ad caelum, et omnes in circuitu lugebunt eam,

44 they will come to her and encircle her and pour out a star and all wrath upon her, and dust and smoke will mount up even to heaven, and all around will mourn her,

45 et qui subremanserint servientes his qui eam exteruerunt.

45 and those who shall have survived, serving those who have trodden her down.

46 et tu Asia consors in specie Babylonis et gloria personae eius,

46 and you, Asia, consort in the semblance of Babylon and the glory of her persona,

47 vae tibi, misera, propter quod adsimilasti ei, ornasti filias tuas in fornicatione ad placendum et gloriandum in amatoribus tuis, qui te cupierunt semper fornicari.

47 woe to you, wretched one, because you assimilated yourself to her, you adorned your daughters in fornication to please and to glory in your lovers, who have desired you always to fornicate.

48 odibilem imitata es in omnibus operibus eius et adinventionibus eius. propterea dicit Deus:

48 you have imitated the odious one in all her works and inventions. therefore God says:

49 inmittam tibi mala, viduitatem, paupertatem et famem et gladium et pestem ad devastandas domos tuas, ad violationem et mortem. et gloria virtutis tuae

49 I will send upon you evils—widowhood, poverty and hunger, and the sword and pestilence—for the devastation of your houses, for violation and death. And the glory of your virtue

50 sicut flos siccabitur, cum exsurget ardor qui emissus est super te.

50 like a flower it will be desiccated, when the ardor rises which has been emitted upon you.

51 et infirmaberis et paupera a plaga et mastigata a vulneribus, ut non possis tuos suscipere potentes et amatores.

51 and you shall be made infirm and poor by the plague, and scourged by wounds, so that you cannot receive your potentates and lovers.

52 numquid ego sic zelabo te, dicit Dominus,

52 Shall I thus be jealous for you, says the Lord,

53 nisi occidisses electos meos in omni tempore, exultans percussione manuum et dicens, super mortem eorum cum inebriata es:

53 unless you had slain my elect at every time, exulting with the percussion of hands and saying, over their death you were inebriated:

54 exorna speciem vultus tui?

54 will you adorn the aspect of your countenance?

55 merces fornicariae in sinus tuos, propterea redditionem percipies.

55 the wages of fornication into your bosom, therefore you will receive restitution.

56 sicut facies electis meis, dicit Dominus, sic faciet tibi Deus et tradet te in malis.

56 as you will do to my elect, says the Lord, so God will do to you and will hand you over into evils.

57 et nati tui fame interient, et tu romphea cades, et civitates tuae conterentur, et omnes tui in campo gladio cadent.

57 and your offspring will perish by famine, and you will fall by the romphaea, and your cities will be crushed, and all yours will fall by the sword in the field.

58 et qui sunt in montibus fame peribunt, et manducabunt carnes suas et sanguinem bibent a fame panis et siti aquae.

58 and those who are in the mountains will perish by famine, and they will eat their own flesh and drink blood because of the famine of bread and the thirst of water.

59 propter priora misera es et iterum excipies mala.

59 on account of the former things you are miserable, and again you will receive evils.

60 et in transitum adlident civitatem oditam et exterent eam, portionem aliquam gloriae tuae et territorii tui, dum revertuntur a Babylonia.

60 and in transit they will dash against the odious city and grind it down—some portion of your glory and of your territory—while they return from Babylonia.

61 extrita illis eris in stramine, et ipsi tibi erunt ignis.

61 you will be crushed by them like straw, and they themselves will be a fire to you.

62 omnes hii comedunt te et civitates tuas et territoria tua et montes, et omnem silvam tuam et ligna pomifera igne consument.

62 all these will devour you and your cities and your territories and your mountains, and all your forest and your fruit-bearing trees they will consume with fire.

63 et natos tuos captivabunt et honestatem tuam spoliabunt et gloriam faciei tuae exterminabunt.

63 and your offspring they will take captive, and they will despoil your honor, and they will exterminate the glory of your face.

CHAPTER 16

1 vae tibi, Babylon et Asia, vae tibi, Aegypte et Syria.

1 woe to you, Babylon and Asia, woe to you, Egypt and Syria.

2 praecingite vos saccos, plangite filios vestros et dolete de his, quia adpropinquavit contritio vestra.

2 gird yourselves with sackcloth, lament your sons and grieve for them, because your ruin has drawn near.

3 inmissus est gladius vobis, et quis est qui avertat eum.

3 a sword has been sent in against you, and who is there to avert it.

4 inmissus est vobis ignis, et quis est qui extinguat eum.

4 A fire has been sent against you, and who is there to extinguish it?

5 inmissa sunt vobis mala, et quis est qui recutiet ea?

5 evils have been sent in upon you, and who is there who will beat them back?

6 numquid recutiet aliquis leonem esurientem in silva aut numquid extinguet ignem, cum stramen incensum fuerit?

6 Will anyone beat back a hungry lion in the forest, or will anyone extinguish a fire, when straw has been set on fire?

7 aut numquid recutiet sagittam inmissam a sagittario forte?

7 or will anyone drive back an arrow launched by a strong archer?

8 Dominus Deus mittit mala, et quis recutiet ea?

8 The Lord God sends calamities, and who will repel them?

9 et exiet ignis ex iracundia eius, et quis est qui extinguat eum?

9 and fire will go out from his wrath, and who is there who will extinguish it?

10 coruscabit, et quis non timebit? tonabit, et quis non horrebit?

10 he will flash, and who will not fear? he will thunder, and who will not shudder?

11 Dominus comminatur, quis non conterretur a facie eius?

11 The Lord menaces, who would not be terrified before his face?

12 tremet terra a fundamento eius, mare fluctuatur de profundo, et fluctus eius turbabuntur et pisces eius a facie Domini et a gloria virtutis eius,

12 the earth will tremble from its foundation, the sea fluctuates from the deep, and its waves will be troubled, and its fishes will be dismayed at the face of the Lord and at the glory of his power,

13 quoniam fortis gloriae qui tendit sagittam, et acumen eius acutum, quae dimissa est ab eo, non deficiet missa super fines terrae.

13 for the Mighty One of glory, who draws the arrow, and its point is sharp—when it has been loosed by him—will not fail, sent over the ends of the earth.

14 ecce mittuntur mala et non revertentur, donec venient super terram.

14 Behold, evils are sent forth and will not return, until they come upon the earth.

15 et ignis incendetur et non extinguetur, donec excomedat frumenta terrae.

15 and fire will be kindled and will not be extinguished, until it consumes the grain of the land.

16 quomodo non revertitur sagitta missa a sagittario valido, sic non revertentur mala quae fuerint emissa in terram.

16 Just as the arrow sent by a mighty archer does not return, so the evils which have been emitted upon the land will not return.

17 vae mihi, vae mihi, quis me liberabit in diebus illis?

17 woe to me, woe to me, who will liberate me in those days?

18 initium gemitus et copiosi suspirantium, initium famis et multi disperient, initium belli et timebunt potestates, initium malor

18 the beginning of groaning and of a copious multitude of those who suspire, the beginning of famine and many will perish, the beginning of war and the powers will fear, the beginning of evils

19 ab eis; quid facient, cum venerint mala?

19 from them; what will they do, when the evils have come?

20 ecce famis plaga dimissa est, et tribulatio eius tamquam mastix, castigatio in disciplina.

20 behold, the plague of famine has been let loose, and its tribulation is like a scourge, a castigation in discipline.

21 et super his omnibus non se avertent ab iniquitatibus suis nec super has plagas memorantur sempiterna.

21 and over all these things they will not turn themselves away from their iniquities, nor, on account of these plagues, are the sempiternal things remembered.

22 ecce erit annonae vilitas in brevi super terram, ut putent sibi esse directam pacem. tunc superflorescent mala super terram, gladius et famis.

22 behold, there will be cheapness of the grain-supply shortly over the earth, so that they think peace has been set straight for them. then evils will superflourish over the earth, the sword and famine.

23 et aporiant vitam super terram, et gladius dispersit quae superaverint a fame.

23 and they shall be in dire straits for life upon the earth, and the sword will disperse those who have survived the famine.

24 et mortui quasi stercora proicientur, et non habent qui consolentur eos. et derelinquetur deserta terra, et civitates eius demolientur.

24 and the dead will be cast forth like dung, and they will not have anyone to console them. and the land will be left desolate, and its cities will be demolished.

25 non derelinquetur agricola, qui colit terram et qui seminat eam.

25 the farmer will not be forsaken, who cultivates the earth and who sows it.

26 ligna fructiferabunt, et quis vindemiet illa?

26 the trees will bear fruit, and who will gather their vintage?

27 et uva tradet se ad vindemiam, et quis adligabit eam? erit enim et locis desertio multa.

27 and the grape will deliver itself to the vintage, and who will bind it? for there will be much desertion even in the places.

28 concupiscet enim homo hominem videre vel certe vocem eius audire.

28 for a man will desire to see a man, or at least to hear his voice.

29 relinquentur enim decem de civitate et duo ex agro, qui absconderint se in silva et in fissuras petrarum.

29 for ten will be left from the city, and two from the field, who will have hidden themselves in the forest and in the fissures of the rocks.

30 quemadmodum relinquentur in oliveto tres vel quattuor olivae,

30 just as three or four olives will be left in an olive-grove,

31 aut sicut in vinea vindemiata et subremanet racemus patens ab scrutantibus vindemiam diligenter,

31 or as in a vineyard vintaged, and a cluster remains over, lying open to those who scrutinize the vintage diligently,

32 sic remanebunt in diebus illis tres vel quattuor ab scrutantibus domos eorum in romphea.

32 so there will remain in those days three or four, their houses being scrutinized by the rhomphaea.

33 et relinquetur deserta terra, et agri eius inveteraverunt, et viae eius et omnes semitae germinabunt spinas, eo quod non transient oves per eam.

33 and the land will be left deserted, and its fields have grown old, and its roads and all its footpaths will sprout thorns, because sheep will not pass through it.

34 lugebunt virgines non habentes sponsos, lugebunt mulieres non habentes viros, lugebunt filiae earum non habentes adiutorium.

34 the virgins will mourn, not having bridegrooms, the women will mourn, not having husbands, their daughters will mourn, not having help.

35 sponsi earum in bello consumentur, et viri earum in fame exterentur.

35 their bridegrooms will be consumed in war, and their husbands will be worn down by famine.

36 audite vero ista et cognoscite, ea servi Domini.

36 Hear verily these things, and recognize them, O servants of the Lord.

37 ecce verbum Domini, excipite eum, ne discredatis de quibus dicit Dominus:

37 behold the word of the Lord, receive it, do not disbelieve concerning the things which the Lord says:

38 ecce adpropinquant mala et non tardantur.

38 behold, evils draw near and are not delayed.

39 quemadmodum praegnans in nono mense filium suum in adpropinquante hora partus eius, ante horas duas vel tres gementes dolores circum ventrem eius, et prodiente infante de ventre non tardabit uno puncto,

39 just as a pregnant woman in the ninth month, her son within, at the approaching hour of her childbirth, two or three hours beforehand, groaning pains around her belly, and when the infant comes forth from the womb she will not delay by a single instant,

40 sic non morabuntur mala ad prodiendum super terram, et saeculum gemet et dolores circumtenent illum.

40 thus the evils will not delay to come forth upon the earth, and the age will groan, and dolors encompass it.

41 audite verbum, plebs mea, parate vos ad pugnam in malis. sic estote quasi advenae terrae:

41 Hear the word, my people; prepare yourselves for battle in evils. So be as sojourners of the earth:

42 qui vendit, quasi qui fugiet; et qui emit, quasi qui perditurus;

42 he who sells, as one who will flee; and he who buys, as one who is about to lose;

43 qui mercatur, quasi qui fructum non capiat; et qui aedificat, quasi non habitaturus;

43 he who trades, as one who will not take profit; and he who builds, as one who will not dwell;

44 qui seminat, quasi non messem facturus; et qui putat, quasi non vindemiaturus;

44 who sows, as if not going to make a harvest; and who prunes, as if not going to gather the vintage;

45 qui nubunt, sic quasi filios non facturi; et qui non nubunt, sic quasi vidui.

45 those who marry, thus as if not going to beget children; and those who do not marry, thus as if widowers.

46 propter quod qui laborant sine causa laborant,

46 on account of which those who labor labor without cause,

47 fructus enim illorum alienigenae metent et substantiam illorum rapient et domos evertent et filios eorum captivabunt, quia in captivitate et fame generant natos suos

47 for foreigners will reap their fruits and will seize their substance and will overturn their houses and will take their sons captive, because in captivity and famine they beget their offspring

48 et qui negotiantur negotiantur in rapina. quamdiu exornant civitates et domos suas et possessiones et personas suas,

48 and those who do business, do business in rapine. so long as they adorn cities and their houses and their possessions and their persons,

49 tanto magis adzelabor eos super peccata dicit Dominus.

49 so much the more I will be zealous against them on account of sins, says the Lord.

50 quomodo zelatur fornicaria mulierem idoneam et bonam valde,

50 how a fornicatress is jealous of a woman idoneous and very good,

51 sic zelabitur iustitia iniquitatem cum exornat se, et accusat eam in faciem, cum venerit qui defendat exquirentem omnem peccatum super terram.

51 thus justice will be zealous against iniquity when it adorns itself, and it accuses her to her face, when he shall have come who will defend the inquirer into every sin upon the earth.

52 propterea nolite similari eam nec operibus eius,

52 therefore do not assimilate yourselves to her nor to her works,

53 quoniam ecce adhuc pusillum, et tolletur iniquitas a terra et iustitia regnabit in nos.

53 for behold, yet a little [while], and iniquity will be taken away from the earth and justice will reign over us.

54 non dicat peccator non se peccasse quoniam carbones ignis conburet super caput eius qui dicit: non peccavi coram Deo et gloria ipsius.

54 let not the sinner say that he has not sinned, since coals of fire will burn upon the head of him who says: I have not sinned before God and His glory.

55 ecce Dominus cognoscit omnia opera hominis et adinventiones illorum et cogitatum illorum et corda illorum.

55 behold, the Lord knows all the works of man, and their inventions, and their cogitation, and their hearts.

56 qui dixit: fiat terra, et facta est, fiat caelum, et factum est,

56 who said: let there be earth, and it was made, let there be heaven, and it was made,

57 et in verbo illius stellae fundatae sunt, et novit numerum stellarum,

57 and by his word the stars were founded, and he knows the number of the stars,

58 qui scrutat abyssum et thesauros illorum, qui metitus est mare et conceptum eius,

58 who scrutinizes the abyss and their treasures, who has meted the sea and its conception,

59 qui conclusit mare in medio aquarum et suspendit terram super aquam verbo suo,

59 who enclosed the sea in the midst of the waters and suspended the earth over the water by his word,

60 qui extendit caelum quasi cameram et super aquas fundavit eum,

60 who extends the heaven like a chamber and founded it upon the waters,

61 qui posuit in deserto fontes aquarum et super vertices montium lacus ad emittendum flumina ab eminenti ut potaret terra,

61 who set in the desert fountains of waters and upon the summits of mountains lakes, to emit rivers from a height so that the earth might drink,

62 qui finxit hominem et posuit cor in medio corporis et misit ei spiritum et vitam et intellectum

62 who fashioned man and placed the heart in the middle of the body and sent to him spirit and life and intellect

63 et spiramentum Dei omnipotentis, qui fecit omnia et scrutinat absconsa in absconsis; certe

63 and the spiration of Almighty God, who made all things and scrutinizes the hidden things within the hidden; surely

64 hic novit adinventionem vestram et quae cogitatis in cordibus vestris. vae peccantibus et volentibus occultare peccata sua.

64 he knows your invention and the things which you cogitate in your hearts. woe to those sinning and to those willing to occult their sins.

65 propter quod Dominus scrutinando scrutinabit omnia opera eorum et traducet vos omnes.

65 wherefore the Lord, by scrutinizing, will scrutinize all their works and will expose you all.

66 et vos confusi eritis, cum processerint peccata vestra coram hominibus, et iniquitates erint quae accusatores stabunt in die illo.

66 and you will be confounded, when your sins shall have proceeded before men, and the iniquities will be those that will stand as accusers on that day.

67 quid facietis aut quomodo abscondetis peccata vestra coram Domino et gloria eius?

67 what will you do, or how will you conceal your sins before the Lord and his glory?

68 ecce iudex Deus, timete eum, et desinite a peccatis vestris et obliviscimini iniquitates vestras iam agere eas sempiterno, et Deus educabit vos et liberabit de omni tribulatione.

68 behold, God the Judge; fear him, and desist from your sins, and forget your iniquities, now to do them no more forever; and God will lead you out and will liberate you from every tribulation.

69 ecce enim incenditur ardor super vos turbae copiosae, et rapient quosdam ex vobis et cibabunt idolis occisam.

69 for behold, the ardor of a copious crowd is kindled over you, and they will snatch some of you and will feed the idols with a slain victim.

70 et qui consenserint eis, erunt illis in derisum et in inproperium et in conculcationem.

70 and those who consent to them will be to them for derision and for reproach and for trampling.

71 erit enim Lociis et in vicinas civitates exsurrectio multa super timentes Dominum.

71 for there will be much insurrection among the Locrians and in the neighboring cities against those who fear the Lord.

72 erunt quasi insani neminem parcentes ad diripiendum et devastandum adhuc timentes Dominum,

72 they will be as if insane, sparing no one, to despoil and devastate, even those who fear the Lord,

73 quia devastabunt et diripient substantias eorum et de domo sua eos eicient,

73 for they will devastate and despoil their substance and will cast them out from their own house,

74 tunc parebit probatio electorum meorum, ut aurum quod probatur ab igne.

74 then the probation of my elect will appear, like gold that is tested by fire.

75 audite, electi mei, dicit Dominus, ecce adsunt dies tribulationis, et de his liberabo vos.

75 hear, my elect, says the Lord, behold the days of tribulation are at hand, and from these I will deliver you.

76 ne timeatis nec haesitemini, quoniam Deus dux vester est.

76 do not fear nor hesitate, since God is your leader.

77 et qui servatis mandata et praecepta mea, dicit Dominus Deus, ne praeponderent vos peccata vestra nec superelevent se iniquitates vestrae.

77 and you who keep my mandates and precepts, says the Lord God, let not your sins preponderate over you nor let your iniquities lift themselves up.

78 vae qui constringuntur a peccatis suis et obteguntur ab iniquitatibus suis, quemadmodum ager constringitur a silva et spinis tegitur semita eius, per quam non transiet homo, et excluditur et mittitur ad devorationem ignis.

78 woe to those who are constrained by their sins and are covered over by their iniquities, just as a field is constrained by a forest and its path is covered with thorns, through which a man will not pass, and he is excluded and is sent to the devoration of fire.
