2 Ceciditque Ochozias per cancellos coenaculi sui, quod habebat in Samaria, et aegrotavit: misitque nuntios, dicens ad eos: Ite, consulite Beelzebub deum Accaron, utrum vivere queam de infirmitate mea hac.

2 And Ahaziah fell through the lattice of his upper chamber which he had in Samaria, and became ill; and he sent messengers, saying to them: Go, consult Beelzebub, the god of Ekron, whether I shall recover from this infirmity of mine.

3 Angelus autem Domini locutus est ad Eliam Thesbiten, dicens: Surge, et ascende in occursum nuntiorum regis Samariae, et dices ad eos: Numquid non est Deus in Israel, ut eatis ad consulendum Beelzebub deum Accaron?

3 But the Angel of the Lord spoke to Elijah the Tishbite, saying: Rise, and go up to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria, and you shall say to them: Is there not a God in Israel, that you go to consult Beelzebub, the god of Ekron?

4 Quam ob rem haec dicit Dominus: De lectulo, super quem ascendisti, non descendes, sed morte morieris. Et abiit Elias.

4 For which reason, thus says the Lord: From the couch, upon which you have ascended, you shall not descend, but you shall surely die. And Elijah departed.

5 Reversique sunt nuntii ad Ochoziam. Qui dixit eis: Quare reversi estis?

5 And the messengers returned to Ahaziah. Who said to them: Why have you returned?

6 At illi responderunt ei: Vir occurrit nobis, et dixit ad nos: Ite, et revertimini ad regem, qui misit vos, et dicetis ei: Haec dicit Dominus: Numquid, quia non erat Deus in Israel, mittis ut consulatur Beelzebub deus Accaron? Idcirco de lectulo, super quem ascendisti, non descendes, sed morte morieris.

6 But they answered him: A man met us and said to us: Go, and return to the king who sent you, and you shall say to him: Thus says the Lord: Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are sending to consult Beelzebub, the god of Accaron? Therefore from the bed on which you have ascended you shall not come down, but you shall surely die.

7 Qui dixit eis: Cuius figurae et habitus est vir ille, qui occurrit vobis, et locutus est verba haec?

7 And he said to them: Of what figure and habit is that man who met you, and spoke these words?

8 At illi dixerunt: Vir pilosus, et zona pellicea accinctus renibus. Qui ait: Elias Thesbites est.

8 And they said: A hairy man, and girt at the loins with a leather belt. He said: It is Elijah the Tishbite.

9 Misitque ad eum quinquagenarium principem, et quinquaginta qui erant sub eo. Qui ascendit ad eum: sedentique in vertice montis, ait: Homo Dei, rex praecepit ut descendas.

9 And he sent to him a captain of fifty, and the fifty who were under him. Who went up to him: and, as he was sitting on the summit of the mountain, said: Man of God, the king has commanded that you descend.

10 Respondensque Elias, dixit quinquagenario: Si homo Dei sum, descendat ignis de caelo, et devoret te, et quinquaginta tuos. Descendit itaque ignis de caelo, et devoravit eum, et quinquaginta qui erant cum eo.

10 And Elias, answering, said to the captain of fifty: If I am a man of God, let fire descend from heaven and devour you and your fifty. So fire descended from heaven and devoured him and the fifty who were with him.

11 Rursumque misit ad eum principem quinquagenarium alterum, et quinquaginta cum eo. Qui locutus est illi: Homo Dei, haec dicit rex: Festina, descende.

11 And again he sent to him another commander of fifty, and fifty with him. Who spoke to him: Man of God, thus says the king: Hasten, come down.

12 Respondens Elias, ait: Si homo Dei ego sum, descendat ignis de caelo, et devoret te, et quinquaginta tuos. Descendit ergo ignis de caelo, et devoravit illum, et quinquaginta eius.

12 Elijah answering said: If I am a man of God, let fire descend from heaven and devour you and your fifty. Therefore fire descended from heaven and devoured him and his fifty.

13 Iterum misit principem quinquagenarium tertium, et quinquaginta qui erant cum eo. Qui cum venisset, curvavit genua contra Eliam, et precatus est eum, et ait: Homo Dei, noli despicere animam meam, et animas servorum tuorum qui mecum sunt.

13 Again he sent a third captain of fifty, and the fifty who were with him. Who, when he had come, bent the knees before Elijah, and besought him, and said: Man of God, do not despise my soul, and the souls of your servants who are with me.

14 Ecce descendit ignis de caelo, et devoravit duos principes quinquagenarios primos, et quinquagenos qui cum eis erant: sed nunc obsecro ut miserearis animae meae.

14 Behold, fire came down from heaven and devoured the first two captains of fifty, and the fifties who were with them; but now I beseech that you have mercy on my soul.

15 Locutus est autem angelus Domini ad Eliam, dicens: Descende cum eo, ne timeas. Surrexit igitur, et descendit cum eo ad regem,

15 But the angel of the Lord spoke to Elijah, saying: Descend with him; do not fear. Therefore he arose, and descended with him to the king,

16 et locutus est ei: Haec dicit Dominus: Quia misisti nuntios ad consulendum Beelzebub deum Accaron, quasi non esset Deus in Israel, a quo posses interrogare sermonem, ideo de lectulo super quem ascendisti, non descendes, sed morte morieris.

16 and he spoke to him: Thus says the Lord: Because you have sent messengers to consult Beelzebub, the god of Ekron, as if there were not a God in Israel from whom you might inquire a word, therefore from the bed upon which you have gone up, you shall not come down, but you shall surely die.

17 Mortuus est ergo iuxta sermonem Domini, quem locutus est Elias, et regnavit Ioram frater eius pro eo, anno secundo Ioram filii Iosaphat regis Iudae: non enim habebat filium.

17 He died, therefore, according to the word of the Lord which Elijah had spoken, and Joram his brother reigned in his place, in the second year of Joram son of Jehoshaphat, king of Judah; for he did not have a son.

18 Reliqua autem verborum Ochoziae, quae operatus est, nonne haec scripta sunt in libro sermonum dierum regum Israel?

18 Now the rest of the words of Ahaziah, which he wrought, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?

1 Factum est autem cum levare vellet Dominus Eliam per turbinem in caelum, ibant Elias et Eliseus de Galgalis.

1 And it came to pass, when the Lord wished to lift Elijah by a whirlwind into heaven, Elijah and Elisha were going from Gilgal.

2 Dixitque Elias ad Eliseum: Sede hic, quia Dominus misit me usque in Bethel. Cui ait Eliseus: Vivit Dominus, et vivit anima tua, quia non derelinquam te. Cumque descendissent Bethel,

2 And Elijah said to Elisha: Sit here, for the Lord has sent me as far as Bethel. To whom Elisha said: As the Lord lives, and as your soul lives, for I will not forsake you. And when they had gone down to Bethel,

3 egressi sunt filii prophetarum, qui erant in Bethel, ad Eliseum, et dixerunt ei: Numquid nosti, quia hodie Dominus tollet dominum tuum a te? Qui respondit: Et ego novi: silete.

3 the sons of the prophets who were in Bethel went out to Elisha and said to him: Do you know that today the Lord will take your master from you? He replied: I also know; be silent.

4 Dixit autem Elias ad Eliseum: Sede hic, quia Dominus misit me in Iericho. Et ille ait: Vivit Dominus, et vivit anima tua, quia non derelinquam te. Cumque venissent Iericho,

4 But Elijah said to Elisha: Sit here, because the Lord has sent me to Jericho. And he said: As the Lord lives, and as your soul lives, I will not forsake you. And when they had come to Jericho,

5 accesserunt filii prophetarum, qui erant in Iericho, ad Eliseum, et dixerunt ei: Numquid nosti quia Dominus hodie tollet dominum tuum a te? Et ait: Ego novi: silete.

5 the sons of the prophets, who were in Jericho, approached Elisha, and said to him: Do you know that today the Lord will take your master from you? And he said: I know: be silent.

6 Dixit autem ei Elias: Sede hic, quia Dominus misit me usque ad Iordanem. Qui ait: Vivit Dominus, et vivit anima tua, quia non derelinquam te. Ierunt igitur ambo pariter,

6 But Elijah said to him: Sit here, for the Lord has sent me as far as the Jordan. And he said: As the Lord lives, and as your soul lives, I will not forsake you. They went therefore both together,

7 et quinquaginta viri de filiis prophetarum secuti sunt eos, qui et steterunt econtra, longe: illi autem ambo stabant super Iordanem.

7 and fifty men from the sons of the prophets followed them, who also stood over against, far off: but the two of them were standing by the Jordan.

8 Tulitque Elias pallium suum, et involvit illud, et percussit aquas, quae divisae sunt in utramque partem, et transierunt ambo per siccum.

8 And Elijah took his mantle, and wrapped it up, and struck the waters, which were divided to either side, and both passed over on dry ground.

9 Cumque transissent, Elias dixit ad Eliseum: Postula quod vis ut faciam tibi, antequam tollar a te. Dixitque Eliseus: Obsecro ut fiat in me duplex spiritus tuus.

9 And when they had crossed over, Elijah said to Elisha: Ask what you wish that I may do for you, before I am taken from you. And Elisha said: I beseech, let there be upon me a double portion of your spirit.

10 Qui respondit: Rem difficilem postulasti: attamen si videris me, quando tollar a te, erit tibi quod petisti: si autem non videris, non erit.

10 He answered: You have asked a difficult thing; nevertheless, if you see me when I am taken up from you, what you have requested shall be yours; but if you do not see, it shall not be.

11 Cumque pergerent, et incedentes sermocinarentur, ecce currus igneus, et equi ignei diviserunt utrumque: et ascendit Elias per turbinem in caelum.

11 And as they went on, and, walking, conversed, behold, a chariot of fire and horses of fire divided the two of them; and Elijah ascended by a whirlwind into heaven.

12 Eliseus autem videbat, et clamabat: Pater mi, pater mi, currus Israel, et auriga eius. Et non vidit eum amplius: apprehenditque vestimenta sua, et scidit illa in duas partes.

12 But Elisha saw, and cried out: My father, my father, the chariot of Israel, and its charioteer. And he saw him no more: and he seized his garments, and tore them into two parts.

13 Et levavit pallium Eliae, quod ceciderat ei: reversusque stetit super ripam Iordanis,

13 And he lifted up Elijah’s mantle, which had fallen to him: and returning, he stood upon the bank of the Jordan,

14 et pallio Eliae, quod ceciderat ei, percussit aquas, et non sunt divisae: et dixit: Ubi est Deus Eliae etiam nunc? Percussitque aquas, et divisae sunt huc atque illuc, et transiit Eliseus.

14 and with Elijah’s mantle, which had fallen to him, he struck the waters, and they were not divided; and he said: Where is the God of Elijah even now? And he struck the waters, and they were divided this way and that, and Elisha crossed over.

15 Videntes autem filii prophetarum, qui erant in Iericho econtra, dixerunt: Requievit spiritus Eliae super Eliseum. Et venientes in occursum eius, adoraverunt eum proni in terram,

15 But seeing him, the sons of the prophets who were at Jericho, across the way, said: The spirit of Elijah has rested upon Elisha. And coming to meet him, they bowed themselves to the ground before him,

16 dixeruntque illi: Ecce, cum servis tuis sunt quinquaginta viri fortes, qui possunt ire, et quaerere dominum tuum, ne forte tulerit eum spiritus Domini, et proiecerit eum in unum montium, aut in unam vallium. Qui ait: Nolite mittere.

16 And they said to him: Behold, with your servants there are 50 valiant men, who can go and seek your master, lest perhaps the Spirit of the Lord has taken him up and cast him on one of the mountains, or in one of the valleys. He said: Do not send.

17 Coegeruntque eum, donec acquiesceret, et diceret: Mittite. Et miserunt quinquaginta viros: qui cum quaesissent tribus diebus, non invenerunt.

17 And they pressed him, until he acquiesced, and said: Send. And they sent fifty men: who, when they had searched for three days, did not find him.

18 Et reversi sunt ad eum: at ille habitabat in Iericho, et dixit eis: Numquid non dixi vobis: Nolite mittere?

18 And they returned to him: and he was dwelling in Jericho, and he said to them: Did I not say to you: Do not send?

19 Dixerunt quoque viri civitatis ad Eliseum: Ecce habitatio civitatis huius optima est, sicut tu ipse domine perspicis: sed aquae pessimae sunt, et terra sterilis.

19 And the men of the city also said to Elisha: Behold, the situation of this city is excellent, as you yourself, lord, clearly perceive: but the waters are very bad, and the land is sterile.

20 At ille ait: Afferte mihi vas novum, et mittite in illud sal. Quod cum attulissent,

20 But he said: Bring me a new vessel, and put salt into it. When they had brought it,

21 egressus ad fontem aquarum misit in illum sal, et ait: Haec dicit Dominus: Sanavi aquas has, et non erit ultra in eis mors, neque sterilitas.

21 he went out to the spring of waters, cast salt into it, and said: Thus says the Lord: I have healed these waters, and there shall no longer be in them death, nor sterility.

22 Sanatae sunt ergo aquae usque in diem hanc, iuxta verbum Elisei, quod locutus est.

22 Therefore the waters have been healed unto this day, according to the word of Elisha which he spoke.

23 Ascendit autem inde in Bethel: cumque ascenderet per viam, pueri parvi egressi sunt de civitate, et illudebant ei, dicentes: Ascende calve, ascende calve.

23 He went up from there to Bethel; and as he was ascending along the way, little boys came out from the city and derided him, saying: Ascend, bald-head, ascend, bald-head.

24 Qui cum respexisset, vidit eos, et maledixit eis in nomine Domini: egressique sunt duo ursi de saltu, et laceraverunt ex eis quadraginta duos pueros.

24 And when he looked back, he saw them and cursed them in the name of the Lord; and two bears came out of the woodland and lacerated forty-two of the boys.

25 Abiit autem inde in montem Carmeli, et inde reversus est in Samariam.

25 And he went from there to Mount Carmel, and from there he returned to Samaria.

1 Ioram vero filius Achab regnavit super Israel in Samaria anno decimo octavo Iosaphat regis Iudae. Regnavitque duodecim annis.

1 Now Joram, the son of Ahab, reigned over Israel in Samaria in the 18th year of Jehoshaphat, king of Judah. And he reigned for 12 years.

2 Et fecit malum coram Domino, sed non sicut pater suus et mater: tulit enim statuas Baal, quas fecerat pater eius.

2 And he did evil before the Lord, but not like his father and mother: for he removed the statues of Baal which his father had made.

3 Verumtamen in peccatis Ieroboam filii Nabat, qui peccare fecit Israel, adhaesit, nec recessit ab eis.

3 Nevertheless, he adhered in the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin, nor did he depart from them.

4 Porro Mesa rex Moab nutriebat pecora multa, et solvebat regi Israel centum millia agnorum, et centum millia arietum cum velleribus suis.

4 Moreover Mesha, king of Moab, kept many flocks, and he paid to the king of Israel one hundred thousand lambs, and one hundred thousand rams with their fleeces.

5 Cumque mortuus fuisset Achab, praevaricatus est foedus, quod habebat cum rege Israel.

5 And when Ahab had died, he violated the covenant which he had with the king of Israel.

6 Egressus est igitur rex Ioram in die illa de Samaria, et recensuit universum Israel.

6 Therefore King Joram went out on that day from Samaria, and mustered all Israel.

7 Misitque ad Iosaphat regem Iuda, dicens: Rex Moab recessit a me, veni mecum contra eum ad praelium. Qui respondit: Ascendam: qui meus est, tuus est: populus meus, populus tuus: et equi mei, equi tui.

7 And he sent to Iosaphat king of Judah, saying: The king of Moab has revolted from me; come with me against him to battle. And he answered: I will go up: what is mine is yours: my people, your people: and my horses, your horses.

8 Dixitque: Per quam viam ascendemus? At ille respondit: Per desertum Idumaeae.

8 And he said: By which way shall we go up? But he replied: By the desert of Idumaea.

9 Perrexerunt igitur rex Israel, et rex Iuda, et rex Edom, et circuierunt per viam septem dierum, nec erat aqua exercitui, et iumentis quae sequebantur eos.

9 So the king of Israel, and the king of Judah, and the king of Edom set out, and they went around by a route of seven days, and there was no water for the army, nor for the beasts of burden that were following them.

10 Dixitque rex Israel: Heu heu heu, congregavit nos Dominus tres reges, ut traderet in manus Moab.

10 And the king of Israel said: Alas, alas, alas, the Lord has congregated us three kings, to deliver us into the hands of Moab.

11 Et ait Iosaphat: Estne hic propheta Domini, ut deprecemur Dominum per eum? Et respondit unus de servis regis Israel: Est hic Eliseus filius Saphat, qui fundebat aquam super manus Eliae.

11 And Jehoshaphat said: Is there here a prophet of the Lord, that we may entreat the Lord through him? And one of the servants of the king of Israel answered: Here is Elisha, son of Shaphat, who used to pour water upon the hands of Elijah.

12 Et ait Iosaphat: Est apud eum sermo Domini. Descenditque ad eum rex Israel, et Iosaphat rex Iuda, et rex Edom.

12 And Jehoshaphat said: The word of the Lord is with him. And the king of Israel went down to him, and Jehoshaphat, king of Judah, and the king of Edom.

13 Dixit autem Eliseus ad regem Israel: Quid mihi et tibi est? Vade ad prophetas patris tui, et matris tuae. Et ait illi rex Israel: Quare congregavit Dominus tres reges hos, ut traderet eos in manus Moab?

13 But Elisha said to the king of Israel: What have I to do with you? Go to the prophets of your father, and of your mother. And the king of Israel said to him: Why has the Lord congregated these three kings, to deliver them into the hand of Moab?

14 Dixitque ad eum Eliseus: Vivit Dominus exercituum, in cuius conspectu sto, quod si non vultum Iosaphat regis Iudae erubescerem, non attendissem quidem te, nec respexissem.

14 And Elisha said to him: As the Lord of hosts lives, in whose sight I stand, if I did not blush for the countenance of Jehoshaphat, king of Judah, I would indeed not have attended to you, nor regarded you.

15 Nunc autem adducite mihi psaltem. Cumque caneret psaltes, facta est super eum manus Domini, et ait:

15 But now bring to me a psalmist. And while the psalmist was singing, the hand of the Lord came upon him, and he said:

16 Haec dicit Dominus: Facite alveum torrentis huius fossas et fossas.

16 Thus says the Lord: Make in the channel of this torrent ditches and ditches.

17 Haec enim dicit Dominus: Non videbitis ventum, neque pluviam: et alveus iste replebitur aquis, et bibetis vos, et familiae vestrae, et iumenta vestra.

17 For thus says the Lord: You will not see wind, nor rain; and this channel will be filled with waters, and you shall drink, you, and your households, and your beasts of burden.

18 Parumque est hoc in conspectu Domini: insuper tradet etiam Moab in manus vestras.

18 And this is little in the sight of the Lord: moreover he will also hand over Moab into your hands.

19 Et percutietis omnem civitatem munitam, et omnem urbem electam, et universum lignum fructiferum succidetis, cunctosque fontes aquarum obturabitis, et omnem agrum egregium operietis lapidibus.

19 And you will strike every fortified city, and every chosen city, and you will cut down every fruit-bearing tree, and you will stop up all the fountains of waters, and you will cover every excellent field with stones.

20 Factum est igitur mane, quando sacrificium offerri solet, et ecce, aquae veniebant per viam Edom, et repleta est terra aquis.

20 Therefore it happened in the morning, when the sacrifice is customarily offered, and behold, waters came by the way of Edom, and the land was filled with water.

21 Universi autem Moabitae audientes quod ascendissent reges ut pugnarent adversum eos, convocaverunt omnes qui accincti erant balteo desuper, et steterunt in terminis.

21 But all the Moabites, hearing that the kings had gone up to fight against them, convoked all who were girded with a belt upon them, and stood at the borders.

22 Primoque mane surgentes, et orto iam sole ex adverso aquarum, viderunt Moabitae econtra aquas rubras quasi sanguinem,

22 And rising at first light in the morning, and with the sun now risen opposite the waters, the Moabites saw, over against them, the waters red, as if blood,

23 dixeruntque: Sanguis gladii est: pugnaverunt reges contra se, et caesi sunt mutuo: nunc perge ad praedam Moab.

23 and they said: It is blood of the sword: the kings have fought against one another, and have been cut down mutually: now go to the plunder, Moab.

24 Perrexeruntque in castra Israel: porro consurgens Israel, percussit Moab: at illi fugerunt coram eis. Venerunt igitur qui vicerant, et percusserunt Moab,

24 And they advanced into the camp of Israel: but Israel, rising up, struck Moab; and they fled before them. Therefore those who had prevailed came, and struck Moab,

25 et civitates destruxerunt: et omnem agrum optimum, mittentes singuli lapides, repleverunt: et universos fontes aquarum obturaverunt: et omnia ligna fructifera succiderunt, ita ut muri tantum fictiles remanerent: et circumdata est civitas a fundibulariis, et magna ex parte percussa.

25 and they destroyed the cities: and every good field they filled, each man casting stones: and they stopped up all the fountains of water: and they cut down all the fruit-bearing trees, so that only the fictile walls remained: and the city was surrounded by slingers, and was struck down in great part.

26 Quod cum vidisset rex Moab, praevaluisse scilicet hostes, tulit secum septingentos viros educentes gladium, ut irrumperent ad regem Edom: et non potuerunt.

26 When the king of Moab saw that, namely, the enemies had prevailed, he took with him seven hundred men drawing the sword, to break through to the king of Edom: and they were not able.

27 Arripiensque filium suum primogenitum, qui regnaturus erat pro eo, obtulit holocaustum super murum: et facta est indignatio magna in Israel, statimque recesserunt ab eo, et reversi sunt in terram suam.

27 And seizing his firstborn son, who was to reign in his stead, he offered him as a holocaust upon the wall: and a great indignation arose in Israel, and straightway they withdrew from him, and returned to their own land.

1 Mulier autem quaedam de uxoribus prophetarum clamabat ad Eliseum, dicens: Servus tuus vir meus mortuus est, et tu nosti quia servus tuus fuit timens Dominum: et ecce creditor venit ut tollat duos filios meos ad serviendum sibi.

1 But a certain woman from among the wives of the prophets was crying out to Elisha, saying: Your servant, my husband, is dead, and you know that your servant was one who feared the Lord; and behold, the creditor has come to take my two sons into service for himself.

2 Cui dixit Eliseus: Quid vis ut faciam tibi? Dic mihi, quid habes in domo tua? At illa respondit: Non habeo ancilla tua quidquam in domo mea nisi parum olei, quo ungar.

2 And Elisha said to her: What do you wish that I should do for you? Tell me, what do you have in your house? But she answered: Your handmaid has nothing in my house except a little oil, with which I may anoint myself.

3 Cui ait: Vade, pete mutuo ab omnibus vicinis tuis vasa vacua non pauca:

3 And he said to her: Go, borrow from all your neighbors empty vessels, not a few:

4 et ingredere, et claude ostium tuum, cum intrinsecus fueris tu, et filii tui: et mitte inde in omnia vasa haec: et cum plena fuerint, tolles.

4 and go in, and shut your door, when you are within, you and your sons: and pour out from there into all these vessels: and when they are full, you will take them up.

5 Ivit itaque mulier, et clausit ostium super se, et super filios suos: illi offerebant vasa, et illa infundebat.

5 So the woman went, and shut the door upon herself and upon her sons: they were offering the vessels, and she was pouring.

6 Cumque plena fuissent vasa, dixit ad filium suum: Affer mihi adhuc vas. Et ille respondit: Non habeo. Stetitque oleum.

6 And when the vessels had been full, she said to her son: Bring me yet a vessel. And he responded: I do not have any. And the oil stood still.

7 Venit autem illa, et indicavit homini Dei. Et ille: Vade, inquit, vende oleum, et redde creditori tuo: tu autem, et filii tui vivite de reliquo.

7 Then she came and indicated to the man of God. And he: Go, he says, sell the oil, and repay your creditor: but you and your sons live off the remainder.

8 Facta est autem quaedam dies, et transibat Eliseus per Sunam: erat autem ibi mulier magna, quae tenuit eum ut comederet panem: cumque frequenter inde transiret, divertebat ad eam ut comederet panem.

8 And it came to pass on a certain day, that Elisha was passing through Shunem: and there was a great woman there, who constrained him to eat bread: and since he frequently passed that way, he would turn aside to her to eat bread.

9 Quae dixit ad virum suum: Animadverto quod vir Dei sanctus est iste, qui transit per nos frequenter.

9 She said to her husband: I perceive that this is a holy man of God, who passes by us frequently.

10 Faciamus ergo ei coenaculum parvum, et ponamus ei in eo lectulum, et mensam, et sellam, et candelabrum, ut cum venerit ad nos, maneat ibi.

10 Let us therefore make for him a small upper room, and let us place for him in it a little bed, and a table, and a chair, and a candelabrum, so that when he comes to us, he may stay there.

11 Facta est ergo dies quaedam, et veniens divertit in coenaculum, et requievit ibi.

11 So there was a certain day, and coming he turned aside into the upper room, and rested there.

12 Dixitque ad Giezi puerum suum: Voca Sunamitidem istam. Qui cum vocasset eam, et illa stetisset coram eo,

12 And he said to Gehazi his servant: Call this Shunammite. And when he had called her, and she had stood before him,

13 dixit ad puerum suum: Loquere ad eam: Ecce, sedule in omnibus ministrasti nobis, quid vis ut faciam tibi? Numquid habes negotium, et vis ut loquar regi, sive principi militiae? Quae respondit: In medio populi mei habito.

13 said to his boy: Speak to her: Behold, you have sedulously in all things ministered to us; what do you wish that I should do for you? Do you have business, and do you wish that I should speak to the king, or to the prince of the soldiery? She answered: I dwell in the midst of my people.

14 Et ait: Quid ergo vult ut faciam ei? Dixitque Giezi: Ne quaeras: filium enim non habet, et vir eius senex est.

14 And he said: What therefore does she wish that I should do for her? And Gehazi said: Do not inquire: for she does not have a son, and her husband is old.

15 Praecepit itaque ut vocaret eam: quae cum vocata fuisset, et stetisset ante ostium,

15 He therefore ordered that she be called: and when she had been called, and had stood before the door,

16 dixit ad eam: In tempore isto, et in hac eadem hora, si vita comes fuerit, habebis in utero filium. At illa respondit: Noli quaeso, domine mi, vir Dei, noli mentiri ancillae tuae.

16 he said to her: At this time, and at this same hour, if life be companion, you will have a son in the womb. But she answered: Do not, I beg, my lord, man of God, do not lie to your handmaid.

17 Et concepit mulier, et peperit filium in tempore, et in hora eadem, qua dixerat Eliseus.

17 And the woman conceived, and she bore a son at the time, and at the same hour, as Elisha had said.

18 Crevit autem puer. Et cum esset quaedam dies, et egressus isset ad patrem suum, ad messores,

18 The boy, moreover, grew. And when there was a certain day, and he had gone out to his father, to the reapers,

19 ait patri suo: Caput meum doleo, caput meum doleo. At ille dixit puero: Tolle, et duc eum ad matrem suam.

19 he said to his father: My head hurts, my head hurts. But he said to the boy: Take him up, and lead him to his mother.

20 Qui cum tulisset, et duxisset eum ad matrem suam, posuit eum illa super genua sua usque ad meridiem, et mortuus est.

20 And when he had taken him, and had brought him to his mother, she placed him upon her knees until noon, and he died.

21 Ascendit autem, et collocavit eum super lectulum hominis Dei, et clausit ostium: et egressa,

21 But she went up, and placed him upon the little bed of the man of God, and closed the door: and, having gone out,

22 vocavit virum suum, et ait: Mitte mecum, obsecro, unum de pueris, et asinam, ut excurram usque ad hominem Dei, et revertar.

22 she called her husband, and said: Send with me, I beseech, one of the youths, and a she-ass, that I may hasten to the man of God, and return.

23 Qui ait illi: Quam ob causam vadis ad eum? hodie non sunt calendae, neque sabbatum. Quae respondit: Vadam.

23 And he said to her: For what cause are you going to him? today are not the calends, nor the sabbath. She responded: I will go.

24 Stravitque asinam, et praecepit puero: Mina, et propera, ne mihi moram facias in eundo: et hoc age quod praecipio tibi.

24 And she saddled the she-ass, and instructed the boy: Drive, and make haste; do not cause delay for me in going; and do this which I command you.

25 Profecta est igitur, et venit ad virum Dei in montem Carmeli: cumque vidisset eam vir Dei econtra, ait ad Giezi puerum suum: Ecce Sunamitis illa.

25 Therefore she set out, and came to the man of God on Mount Carmel; and when the man of God saw her over against him, he said to Gehazi, his servant: Behold, that Shunammite.

26 Vade ergo in occursum eius, et dic ei: Recte ne agitur circa te, et circa virum tuum, et circa filium tuum? Quae respondit: Recte.

26 Go therefore to meet her, and say to her: Is it well with you, and with your husband, and with your son? She answered: It is well.

27 Cumque venisset ad virum Dei in montem, apprehendit pedes eius: et accessit Giezi ut amoveret eam. Et ait homo Dei: Dimitte illam: anima enim eius in amaritudine est, et Dominus celavit a me, et non indicavit mihi.

27 And when she came to the man of God on the mountain, she seized his feet; and Giezi approached to remove her. And the man of God said: Let her be; for her soul is in bitterness, and the Lord has concealed it from me, and has not indicated it to me.

28 Quae dixit illi: Numquid petivi filium a domino meo? numquid non dixi tibi: Ne illudas me?

28 She said to him: Did I ask a son of my lord? Did I not say to you: Do not delude me?

29 Et ille ait ad Giezi: Accinge lumbos tuos, et tolle baculum meum in manu tua, et vade. Si occurrerit tibi homo, non salutes eum: et si salutaverit te quispiam, non respondeas illi: et pones baculum meum super faciem pueri.

29 And he said to Gehazi: Gird your loins, and take my staff in your hand, and go. If a man meets you, do not salute him: and if anyone salutes you, do not answer him: and you shall place my staff upon the face of the boy.

30 Porro mater pueri ait: Vivit Dominus, et vivit anima tua, non dimittam te. Surrexit ergo, et secutus est eam.

30 But the mother of the boy said: As the LORD lives, and as your soul lives, I will not leave you. Therefore he rose and followed her.

31 Giezi autem praecesserat ante eos, et posuerat baculum super faciem pueri, et non erat vox, neque sensus: reversusque est in occursum eius, et nuntiavit ei, dicens: Non surrexit puer.

31 But Gehazi had gone on before them, and had put the staff upon the face of the boy, and there was no voice nor sense: and he returned to meet him, and reported to him, saying: The boy has not risen.

32 Ingressus est ergo Eliseus domum, et ecce puer mortuus iacebat in lectulo eius:

32 Therefore Elisha entered the house, and behold, the boy lay dead upon his bed:

33 ingressusque clausit ostium super se, et super puerum, et oravit ad Dominum.

33 and when he had entered, he closed the door upon himself and upon the boy, and prayed to the Lord.

34 Et ascendit, et incubuit super puerum: posuitque os suum super os eius, et oculos suos super oculos eius, et manus suas super manus eius: et incurvavit se super eum, et calefacta est caro pueri.

34 And he went up and lay upon the boy; and he placed his mouth upon his mouth, and his eyes upon his eyes, and his hands upon his hands; and he bent himself over him, and the flesh of the boy was warmed.

35 At ille reversus, deambulavit in domo, semel huc atque illuc: et ascendit, et incubuit super eum: et oscitavit puer septies, aperuitque oculos.

35 But he, having returned, walked about in the house, once here and there: and he went up and lay upon him: and the boy yawned seven times, and opened his eyes.

36 At ille vocavit Giezi, et dixit ei: Voca Sunamitidem hanc. Quae vocata, ingressa est ad eum. Qui ait: Tolle filium tuum.

36 But he called Gehazi, and said to him: Call this Shunammite. And she, having been called, went in to him. And he said: Take up your son.

37 Venit illa, et corruit ad pedes eius, et adoravit super terram: tulitque filium suum, et egressa est.

37 She came, and fell at his feet, and adored upon the ground; and she took up her son, and went out.

38 Et Eliseus reversus est in Galgala. Erat autem fames in terra, et filii prophetarum habitabant coram eo. Dixitque uni de pueris suis: Pone ollam grandem, et coque pulmentum filiis prophetarum.

38 And Elisha returned to Gilgal. Now there was a famine in the land, and the sons of the prophets were dwelling before him. And he said to one of his servants: Set on a great pot, and boil pottage for the sons of the prophets.

39 Et egressus est unus in agrum ut colligeret herbas agrestes: invenitque quasi vitem silvestrem, et collegit ex ea colocynthidas agri, et implevit pallium suum, et reversus concidit in ollam pulmenti: nesciebat enim quid esset.

39 And one went out into the field to gather wild herbs; and he found, as it were, a wild vine, and gathered from it gourds of the field—colocynths—and filled his cloak, and returning he cut them into the pot of pottage; for he did not know what it was.

40 Infuderunt ergo sociis, ut comederent: cumque gustassent de coctione, clamaverunt, dicentes: Mors in olla, vir Dei. Et non potuerunt comedere.

40 Therefore they poured out for the companions, that they might eat: and when they had tasted of the stew, they cried out, saying: Death in the pot, man of God. And they were not able to eat.

41 At ille: Afferte, inquit, farinam. Cumque tulissent, misit in ollam, et ait: Infunde turbae, ut comedant. Et non fuit amplius quidquam amaritudinis in olla.

41 But he said, "Bring flour." And when they had brought it, he cast it into the pot, and said, "Pour out for the multitude, that they may eat." And there was no longer any bitterness in the pot.

42 Vir autem quidam venit de Baalsalisa deferens viro Dei panes primitiarum, viginti panes hordeaceos, et frumentum novum in pera sua. At ille dixit: Da populo, ut comedat.

42 But a certain man came from Baalsalisa, bearing to the man of God loaves of first-fruits, twenty barley loaves, and new grain in his satchel. But he said: Give to the people, that they may eat.

43 Responditque ei minister eius: Quantum est hoc, ut apponam centum viris? Rursum ille ait: Da populo, ut comedat: haec enim dicit Dominus: Comedent, et supererit.

43 And his minister answered him: What is this, that I should set it before a hundred men? Again he said: Give to the people, that they may eat: for thus says the Lord: They will eat, and there will be left over.

44 Posuit itaque coram eis: qui comederunt, et superfuit iuxta verbum Domini.

44 So he set it before them: and they ate, and there was some left over, according to the word of the Lord.

1 Naaman princeps militiae regis Syriae, erat vir magnus apud dominum suum, et honoratus: per illum enim dedit Dominus salutem Syriae: erat autem vir fortis et dives, sed leprosus.

1 Naaman, chief of the militia of the king of Syria, was a great man with his lord, and honored: for through him the Lord gave salvation to Syria: moreover, he was a strong and wealthy man, but a leper.

2 Porro de Syria egressi fuerant latrunculi, et captivam duxerant de terra Israel puellam parvulam, quae erat in obsequio uxoris Naaman,

2 Now raiders had gone out from Syria, and had led away captive from the land of Israel a little girl, who was in the service of Naaman’s wife,

3 quae ait ad dominam suam: Utinam fuisset dominus meus ad prophetam, qui est in Samaria: profecto curasset eum a lepra, quam habet.

3 who said to her mistress: Would that my lord had been to the prophet who is in Samaria; surely he would have cured him of the leprosy which he has.

4 Ingressus est itaque Naaman ad dominum suum, et nuntiavit ei, dicens: Sic et sic locuta est puella de terra Israel.

4 Therefore Naaman entered to his lord, and announced to him, saying: Thus and thus has the girl from the land of Israel spoken.

5 Dixitque ei rex Syriae: Vade, et mittam litteras ad regem Israel. Qui cum profectus esset, et tulisset secum decem talenta argenti, et sex millia aureos, et decem mutatoria vestimentorum,

5 And the king of Syria said to him: Go, and I will send letters to the king of Israel. And when he had set out, he took with him ten talents of silver, and six thousand gold pieces, and ten changes of garments,

6 detulit litteras ad regem Israel, in haec verba: Cum acceperis epistolam hanc, scito quod miserim ad te Naaman servum meum, ut cures eum a lepra sua.

6 he brought letters to the king of Israel, in these words: When you shall have received this epistle, know that I have sent to you Naaman my servant, that you may cure him of his leprosy.

7 Cumque legisset rex Israel litteras, scidit vestimenta sua, et ait: Numquid Deus ego sum, ut occidere possim et vivificare, quia iste misit ad me, ut curem hominem a lepra sua? Animadvertite, et videte quod occasiones quaerat adversum me.

7 And when the king of Israel had read the letters, he tore his garments, and said: Am I God, that I might be able to kill and to vivify, because this man has sent to me that I should cure a man of his leprosy? Take note, and see that he seeks occasions against me.

8 Quod cum audisset Eliseus vir Dei, scidisse videlicet regem Israel vestimenta sua, misit ad eum, dicens: Quare scidisti vestimenta tua? veniat ad me, et sciat esse prophetam in Israel.

8 When Elisha, the man of God, heard that the king of Israel had torn his garments, he sent to him, saying: Why did you tear your garments? Let him come to me, and he will know that there is a prophet in Israel.

9 Venit ergo Naaman cum equis, et curribus, et stetit ad ostium domus Elisei:

9 Naaman therefore came with horses and chariots, and stood at the door of the house of Elisha:

10 misitque ad eum Eliseus nuntium, dicens: Vade, et lavare septies in Iordane, et recipiet sanitatem caro tua, atque mundaberis.

10 and Elisha sent a messenger to him, saying: Go, and wash seven times in the Jordan, and your flesh will receive health, and you will be cleansed.

11 Iratus Naaman recedebat, dicens: Putabam quod egrederetur ad me, et stans invocaret nomen Domini Dei sui, et tangeret manu sua locum leprae, et curaret me.

11 Naaman, irate, was going away, saying: I thought that he would come out to me, and, standing, would invoke the name of the Lord his God, and would touch with his hand the place of the leprosy, and would cure me.

12 Numquid non meliores sunt Abana, et Pharphar, fluvii Damasci, omnibus aquis Israel, ut laver in eis, et munder? Cum ergo vertisset se, et abiret indignans,

12 Are not Abana and Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel, that I might wash in them, and be cleansed? Therefore when he had turned himself, and was going away indignant,

13 accesserunt ad eum servi sui, et locuti sunt ei: Pater, etsi rem grandem dixisset tibi propheta, certe facere debueras: quanto magis quia nunc dixit tibi: Lavare, et mundaberis?

13 His servants approached him, and spoke to him: Father, even if the prophet had told you a grand thing, you surely ought to have done it: how much more, since now he has said to you: Wash, and you will be cleansed?

14 Descendit, et lavit in Iordane septies ixta sermonem viri Dei, et restituta est caro eius, sicut caro pueri parvuli, et mundatus est.

14 He descended and washed in the Jordan seven times according to the word of the man of God, and his flesh was restored like the flesh of a little child, and he was cleansed.

15 Reversusque ad virum Dei cum universo comitatu suo, venit, et stetit coram eo, et ait: Vere scio quod non sit alius Deus in universa terra, nisi tantum in Israel. Obsecro itaque ut accipias benedictionem a servo tuo.

15 And having returned to the man of God with his whole retinue, he came and stood before him, and said: Truly I know that there is no other God in the whole earth, except only in Israel. I beseech you therefore to accept a blessing from your servant.

16 At ille respondit: Vivit Dominus, ante quem sto, quia non accipiam. Cumque vim faceret, penitus non acquievit.

16 But he responded: As the Lord lives, before whom I stand, I will not accept. And although he pressed him, he utterly did not acquiesce.

17 Dixitque Naaman: Ut vis: sed, obsecro, concede mihi servo tuo ut tollam onus duorum burdonum de terra: non enim faciet ultra servus tuus holocaustum, aut victimam diis alienis, nisi Domino.

17 And Naaman said: As you will; but, I beseech, grant to your servant that I may take away a load of earth for two mules: for your servant will no longer make a holocaust or a sacrifice to alien gods, but only to the Lord.

18 Hoc autem solum est, de quo depreceris Dominum pro servo tuo, quando ingredietur dominus meus templum Remmon, ut adoret: et illo innitente super manum meam, si adoravero in templo Remmon, adorante eo in eodem loco, ut ignoscat mihi Dominus servo tuo pro hac re.

18 But this only is the thing, concerning which you would beseech the Lord for your servant: when my lord enters the temple of Remmon to adore, and he is leaning upon my hand, if I shall adore in the temple of Remmon, while he is adoring in the same place, may the Lord pardon your servant for this matter.

19 Qui dixit ei: Vade in pace. Abiit ergo ab eo electo terrae tempore.

19 He said to him: Go in peace. Therefore he went away from him a short distance of ground.

20 Dixitque Giezi puer viri Dei: Pepercit dominus meus Naaman Syro isti, ut non acciperet ab eo quae attulit: vivit Dominus, quia curram post eum, et accipiam ab eo aliquid.

20 And Gehazi, the servant of the man of God, said: My lord has spared Naaman this Syrian, so as not to receive from him the things which he brought: as the Lord lives, I will run after him, and I will receive something from him.

21 Et secutus est Giezi post tergum Naaman: quem cum vidisset ille currentem ad se, desiliit de curru in occursum eius, et ait: Rectene sunt omnia?

21 And Gehazi followed after Naaman; and when Naaman saw him running toward him, he leapt down from the chariot to meet him and said: Are all things well?

22 Et ille ait: Recte. Dominus meus misit me ad te dicens: Modo venerunt ad me duo adolescentes de monte Ephraim, ex filiis prophetarum: da eis talentum argenti, et vestes mutatorias duplices.

22 And he said: It is well. My lord has sent me to you, saying: Just now there have come to me two youths from Mount Ephraim, from the sons of the prophets: give them a talent of silver, and two changes of garments.

23 Dixitque Naaman: Melius est ut accipias duo talenta. Et coegit eum, ligavitque duo talenta argenti in duobus saccis, et duplicia vestimenta, et imposuit duobus pueris suis, qui et portaverunt coram eo.

23 And Naaman said: It is better that you receive two talents. And he compelled him, and bound up two talents of silver in two sacks, and double garments, and placed them upon his two servants, who also carried them before him.

24 Cumque venisset iam vesperi, tulit de manu eorum, et reposuit in domo, dimisitque viros, et abierunt.

24 And when he had come, now at evening, he took it from their hand and put it away in the house, and he dismissed the men, and they departed.

25 Ipse autem ingressus, stetit coram domino suo. Et dixit Eliseus: Unde venis Giezi? Qui respondit: Non ivit servus tuus quoquam.

25 But he himself, having entered, stood before his master. And Elisha said: From where do you come, Gehazi? He replied: Your servant went nowhere.

26 At ille ait: Nonne cor meum in praesenti erat, quando reversus est homo de curru suo in occursum tui? Nunc igitur accepisti argentum, et accepisti vestes ut emas oliveta, et vineas, et oves, et boves, et servos, et ancillas.

26 But he said: Was not my heart present, when the man turned back from his chariot to meet you? Now therefore you have received silver, and you have received garments, that you might buy olive-groves, and vineyards, and sheep, and oxen, and male-servants, and maidservants.

27 Sed et lepra Naaman adhaerebit tibi, et semini tuo, usque in sempiternum. Et egressus est ab eo leprosus quasi nix.

27 But the leprosy of Naaman shall adhere to you, and to your seed, unto everlasting. And he went out from him a leper, like snow.

1 Dixerunt autem filii prophetarum ad Eliseum: Ecce locus, in quo habitamus coram te, angustus est nobis.

1 And the sons of the prophets said to Elisha: Behold, the place in which we dwell before you is too narrow for us.

2 Eamus usque ad Iordanem, et tollant singuli de silva materias singulas, ut aedificemus nobis ibi locum ad habitandum. Qui dixit: Ite.

2 Let us go as far as the Jordan, and let each one take from the forest a single piece of timber, so that we may build ourselves there a place to dwell. He said: Go.

3 Et ait unus ex illis: Veni ergo et tu cum servis tuis. Respondit: Ego veniam.

3 And one of them said: Come then, you too, with your servants. He answered: I will come.

4 Et abiit cum eis. Cumque venissent ad Iordanem, caedebant ligna.

4 And he went with them. And when they had come to the Jordan, they were cutting wood.

5 Accidit autem, ut cum unus materiam succidisset, caderet ferrum securis in aquam: exclamavitque ille, et ait: Heu heu heu domine mi, et hoc ipsum mutuo acceperam.

5 And it happened that, when one had been cutting down timber, the iron of the axe fell into the water; and he cried out and said: Alas, alas, alas, my lord, and I had received this very thing on loan.

6 Dixit autem homo Dei: Ubi cecidit? At ille monstravit ei locum. Praecidit ergo lignum, et misit illuc: natavitque ferrum,

6 But the man of God said: Where did it fall? And he showed him the place. Therefore he cut off a piece of wood, and sent it in there: and the iron floated,

7 et ait: Tolle. Qui extendit manum, et tulit illud.

7 and he said: Take it. He stretched out his hand, and took it.

8 Rex autem Syriae pugnabat contra Israel, consiliumque iniit cum servis suis, dicens: In loco illo et illo ponamus insidias.

8 But the king of Syria was fighting against Israel, and he entered into counsel with his servants, saying: In such and such a place let us set ambushes.

9 Misit itaque vir Dei ad regem Israel, dicens: Cave ne transeas in locum illum: quia ibi Syri in insidiis sunt.

9 Thus the man of God sent to the king of Israel, saying: Beware lest you pass through that place: because there the Syrians are in ambush.

10 Misit itaque rex Israel ad locum quem dixerat ei vir Dei, et praeoccupavit eum, et observavit se ibi non semel neque bis.

10 So the king of Israel sent to the place which the man of God had told him, and preempted it, and kept himself there under watch, not once nor twice.

11 Conturbatumque est cor regis Syriae pro hac re: et convocatis servis suis, ait: Quare non indicatis mihi quis proditor mei sit apud regem Israel?

11 And the heart of the king of Syria was perturbed on account of this matter: and having convoked his servants, he said: Why do you not indicate to me who is my traitor with the king of Israel?

12 Dixitque unus servorum eius: Nequaquam, domine mi rex, sed Eliseus propheta, qui est in Israel, indicat regi Israel omnia verba quaecumque locutus fueris in conclavi tuo.

12 And one of his servants said: By no means, my lord king, but Elisha the prophet, who is in Israel, indicates to the king of Israel all the words whatever you have spoken in your bedchamber.

13 Dixitque eis: Ite, et videte ubi sit: ut mittam, et capiam eum. Annuntiaveruntque ei, dicentes: Ecce in Dothan.

13 And he said to them: Go, and see where he is, that I may send and seize him. And they announced to him, saying: Behold, in Dothan.

14 Misit ergo illuc equos et currus, et robur exercitus: qui cum venissent nocte, circumdederunt civitatem.

14 He therefore sent there horses and chariots, and the might of the army: who, when they had come by night, encircled the city.

15 Consurgens autem diluculo minister viri Dei, egressus, vidit exercitum in circuitu civitatis, et equos et currus: nuntiavitque ei, dicens: Heu heu heu, domine mi, quid faciemus?

15 But rising at dawn, the minister of the man of God went out and saw an army around the city, and horses and chariots; and he reported to him, saying: Alas, alas, alas, my lord, what shall we do?

16 At ille respondit: Noli timere: plures enim nobiscum sunt, quam cum illis.

16 But he replied: Do not fear: for more are with us than with them.

17 Cumque orasset Eliseus, ait: Domine, aperi oculos huius, ut videat. Et aperuit Dominus oculos pueri, et vidit: et ecce mons plenus equorum, et curruum igneorum, in circuitu Elisei.

17 And when Elisha had prayed, he said: Lord, open the eyes of this one, that he may see. And the Lord opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw: and behold, the mountain full of horses and chariots of fire, around Elisha.

18 Hostes vero descenderunt ad eum: porro Eliseus oravit ad Dominum, dicens: Percute, obsecro, gentem hanc caecitate. Percussitque eos Dominus, ne viderent, iuxta verbum Elisei.

18 But the enemies came down to him: and Elisha prayed to the Lord, saying: Strike, I beseech, this people with blindness. And the Lord struck them, that they might not see, according to the word of Elisha.

19 Dixit autem ad eos Eliseus: Non est haec via, neque ista est civitas: sequimini me, et ostendam vobis virum quem quaeritis. Duxit ergo eos in Samariam:

19 But Elisha said to them: This is not the way, nor is this the city: follow me, and I will show you the man whom you seek. Therefore he led them into Samaria:

20 cumque ingressi fuissent in Samariam, dixit Eliseus: Domine, aperi oculos istorum, ut videant. Aperuitque Dominus oculos eorum, et viderunt se esse in medio Samariae.

20 and when they had entered into Samaria, Elisha said: Lord, open the eyes of these, that they may see. And the Lord opened their eyes, and they saw that they were in the midst of Samaria.

21 Dixitque rex Israel ad Eliseum, cum vidisset eos: Numquid percutiam eos, pater mi?

21 And the king of Israel said to Elisha, when he saw them: Shall I smite them, my father?

22 At ille ait: Non percuties: neque enim cepisti eos gladio, et arcu tuo, ut percutias: sed pone panem et aquam coram eis, ut comedant, et bibant, et vadant ad dominum suum.

22 But he said: You shall not strike; for you did not capture them with your sword, and your bow, that you should strike them; but set bread and water before them, that they may eat, and drink, and go to their lord.

23 Appositaque est eis ciborum magna praeparatio, et comederunt, et biberunt, et dimisit eos, abieruntque ad dominum suum, et ultra non venerunt latrones Syriae in terram Israel.

23 And a great preparation of foods was set before them, and they ate and drank, and he dismissed them; and they went to their lord, and thereafter the brigands of Syria no longer came into the land of Israel.

24 Factum est autem post haec, congregavit Benadad rex Syriae universum exercitum suum, et ascendit, et obsidebat Samariam.

24 And it came to pass after these things, Benadad king of Syria gathered together his whole army, and went up, and was besieging Samaria.

25 Factaque est fames magna in Samaria: et tamdiu obsessa est, donec venundaretur caput asini octoginta argenteis, et quarta pars cabi stercoris columbarum quinque argenteis.

25 And a great famine came to be in Samaria; and it was besieged for so long, until the head of an ass was sold for 80 pieces of silver, and the fourth part of a cab of doves’ dung for 5 pieces of silver.

26 Cumque rex Israel transiret per murum, mulier quaedam exclamavit ad eum, dicens: Salva me, domine mi rex.

26 And as the king of Israel was passing along the wall, a certain woman cried out to him, saying: Save me, my lord, O king.

27 Qui ait: Non te salvat Dominus: unde te possum salvare? de area, vel de torculari? Dixitque ad eam rex: Quid tibi vis? Quae respondit:

27 He said: The Lord does not save you: whence can I save you? from the threshing-floor, or from the winepress? And the king said to her: What do you want? And she answered:

28 Mulier ista dixit mihi: Da filium tuum, ut comedamus eum hodie, et filium meum comedemus cras.

28 This woman said to me: Give your son, that we may eat him today, and my son we will eat tomorrow.

29 Coximus ergo filium meum, et comedimus. Dixique ei die altera: Da filium tuum, ut comedamus eum. Quae abscondit filium suum.

29 Therefore we boiled my son and ate him. And I said to her on the next day: Give your son, that we may eat him. But she hid her son.

30 Quod cum audisset rex, scidit vestimenta sua, et transibat per murum. Viditque omnis populus cilicium, quo vestitus erat ad carnem intrinsecus.

30 When the king had heard this, he rent his garments, and was passing along the wall. And all the people saw the cilice, with which he was clothed next to the flesh on the inside.

31 Et ait rex: Haec mihi faciat Deus, et haec addat, si steterit caput Elisei filii Saphat super ipsum hodie.

31 And the king said: May God do this to me, and add this, if the head of Elisha son of Shaphat remains upon him today.

32 Eliseus autem sedebat in domo sua, et senes sedebant cum eo. Praemisit itaque virum: et antequam veniret nuntius ille, dixit ad senes: Numquid scitis quod miserit filius homicidae hic, ut praecidatur caput meum? Videte ergo, cum venerit nuntius, claudite ostium, et non sinatis eum introire: ecce enim sonitus pedum domini eius post eum est.

32 But Elisha was sitting in his house, and the elders were sitting with him. So he had sent a man ahead; and before that messenger came, he said to the elders: Do you know that the son of the homicide has sent this one here, to have my head cut off? See then, when the messenger comes, shut the door, and do not allow him to enter: for behold, the sound of the footsteps of his lord is behind him.

33 Adhuc illo loquente eis, apparuit nuntius, qui veniebat ad eum. Et ait: Ecce, tantum malum a Domino est: quid amplius expectabo a Domino?

33 While he was still speaking to them, a messenger appeared, who was coming to him. And he said: Behold, so great an evil is from the Lord: what more shall I expect from the Lord?

1 Dixit autem Eliseus: Audite verbum Domini: Haec dicit Dominus: In tempore hoc cras modius similae uno statere erit, et duo modii hordei statere uno, in porta Samariae.

1 But Elisha said: Hear the word of the Lord: Thus says the Lord: At this time tomorrow a measure of fine flour will be for one shekel, and two measures of barley for one shekel, at the gate of Samaria.

2 Respondens unus de ducibus, super cuius manum rex incumbebat, homini Dei, ait: Si Dominus fecerit etiam cataractas in caelo, numquid poterit esse quod loqueris? Qui ait: Videbis oculis tuis, et inde non comedes.

2 And answering, one of the leaders, upon whose hand the king was leaning, to the man of God, said: Even if the Lord should make cataracts in heaven, could what you speak be? And he said: You will see it with your own eyes, and of it you shall not eat.

3 Quatuor ergo viri erant leprosi iuxta introitum portae: qui dixerunt ad invicem: Quid hic esse volumus donec moriamur?

3 Therefore four men were leprous near the entrance of the gate; and they said to one another: Why do we wish to be here until we die?

4 Sive ingredi voluerimus civitatem, fame moriemur: sive manserimus hic, moriendum nobis est: venite ergo, et transfugiamus ad castra Syriae: si pepercerint nobis, vivemus: si autem occidere voluerint, nihilominus moriemur.

4 If we should wish to enter the city, we will die of famine: if we stay here, we must die: come therefore, and let us defect to the camp of Syria: if they spare us, we will live: but if they should wish to kill us, nonetheless we will die.

5 Surrexerunt ergo vesperi, ut venirent ad castra Syriae. Cumque venissent ad principium castrorum Syriae, nullum ibidem repererunt.

5 Therefore they rose in the evening, in order to come to the camp of Syria. And when they had come to the beginning of the camp of Syria, they found no one there.

6 Siquidem Dominus sonitum audiri fecerat in castris Syriae, curruum, et equorum, et exercitus plurimi: dixeruntque ad invicem: Ecce mercede conduxit adversum nos rex Israel reges Hethaeorum et Aegyptiorum, et venerunt super nos.

6 For indeed the Lord had caused a sound to be heard in the camp of Syria: of chariots, and of horses, and of a very great army; and they said to one another: Behold, the king of Israel has, for wages, hired against us the kings of the Hittites and of the Egyptians, and they have come upon us.

7 Surrexerunt ergo, et fugerunt in tenebris, et dereliquerunt tentoria sua, et equos et asinos, in castris, fugeruntque animas tantum suas salvare cupientes.

7 Therefore they rose up and fled in the darkness, and left their tents, and their horses and donkeys, in the camp; and they fled, desiring only to save their lives.

8 Igitur cum venissent leprosi illi ad principium castrorum, ingressi sunt unum tabernaculum, et comederunt et biberunt: tuleruntque inde argentum, et aurum, et vestes, et abierunt, et absconderunt: et rursum reversi sunt ad aliud tabernaculum, et inde similiter auferentes absconderunt.

8 Therefore, when those lepers had come to the edge of the camp, they entered one tent, and ate and drank: and they took from there silver, and gold, and garments, and went away, and hid them: and again they returned to another tent, and, taking away from there likewise, they hid them.

9 Dixeruntque ad invicem: Non recte facimus: haec enim dies boni nuntii est. Si tacuerimus et noluerimus nuntiare usque mane, sceleris arguemur: venite, eamus, et nuntiemus in aula regis.

9 And they said to one another: We are not doing right: for this day is a day of good news. If we keep silent and are unwilling to announce it until morning, we shall be accused of crime: come, let us go, and let us announce it in the king’s palace.

10 Cumque venissent ad portam civitatis, narraverunt eis, dicentes: Ivimus ad castra Syriae, et nullum ibidem reperimus hominem, nisi equos et asinos alligatos, et fixa tentoria.

10 And when they came to the gate of the city, they told them, saying: We went to the camp of Syria, and we found no man there, except horses and asses tied, and the tents fixed.

11 Ierunt ergo portarii, et nuntiaverunt in palatio regis intrinsecus.

11 Therefore the gatekeepers went, and announced within the king’s palace.

12 Qui surrexit nocte, et ait ad servos suos: Dico vobis quid fecerint nobis Syri: sciunt quia fame laboramus, et idcirco egressi sunt de castris, et latitant in agris, dicentes: Cum egressi fuerint de civitate, capiemus eos vivos, et tunc civitatem ingredi poterimus.

12 He rose at night, and said to his servants: I tell you what the Syrians have done to us: they know that we are laboring under famine, and therefore they have gone forth from the camp and are lying hidden in the fields, saying: When they shall have gone out from the city, we will seize them alive, and then we shall be able to enter the city.

13 Respondit autem unus servorum eius: Tollamus quinque equos, qui remanserunt in urbe (quia ipsi tantum sunt in universa multitudine Israel, alii enim consumpti sunt), et mittentes, explorare poterimus.

13 But one of his servants answered: Let us take five horses which have remained in the city (for they alone are in the entire multitude of Israel; for the others have been consumed), and by sending them, we shall be able to explore.

14 Adduxerunt ergo duos equos, misitque rex in castra Syrorum, dicens: Ite, et videte.

14 They therefore brought two horses, and the king sent them into the camp of the Syrians, saying: Go, and see.

15 Qui abierunt post eos usque ad Iordanem: ecce autem omnis via plena erat vestibus et vasis, quae proiecerant Syri cum turbarentur: reversique nuntii indicaverunt regi.

15 They went after them as far as the Jordan: and behold, the whole way was full of garments and vessels which the Syrians had thrown away when they were thrown into confusion; and the messengers, having returned, reported to the king.

16 Et egressus populus diripuit castra Syriae: factusque est modius similae statere uno, et duo modii hordei statere uno, iuxta verbum Domini.

16 And the people went out and despoiled the camp of Syria: and a modius of fine flour came to be at one shekel, and two modii of barley at one shekel, according to the word of the Lord.

17 Porro rex ducem illum, in cuius manu incumbebat, constituit ad portam: quem conculcavit turba in introitu portae, et mortuus est, iuxta quod locutus fuerat vir Dei, quando descenderat rex ad eum.

17 Moreover the king constituted that captain, on whose hand he was leaning, at the gate: whom the crowd trampled at the entrance of the gate, and he died, according to what the man of God had spoken, when the king had come down to him.

18 Factumque est secundum sermonem viri Dei, quem dixerat regi, quando ait: Duo modii hordei statere uno erunt, et modius similae statere uno, hoc eodem tempore cras in porta Samariae:

18 And it came to pass according to the word of the man of God, which he had spoken to the king, when he said: Two modii of barley will be for one shekel, and a modius of fine flour for one shekel, at this same time tomorrow in the gate of Samaria:

19 quando responderat dux ille viro Dei, et dixerat: Etiamsi Dominus fecerit cataractas in caelo, numquid poterit fieri quod loqueris? Et dixit ei: Videbis oculis tuis, et inde non comedes.

19 when that commander had answered the man of God, and had said: Even if the Lord should make cataracts in heaven, would what you say be able to occur? And he said to him: You will see with your eyes, and from it you will not eat.

20 Evenit ergo ei sicut praedictum fuerat, et conculcavit eum populus in porta, et mortuus est.

1 Eliseus autem locutus est ad mulierem, cuius vivere fecerat filium, dicens: Surge, vade tu et domus tua, et peregrinare ubicumque repereris: vocavit enim Dominus famem, et veniet super terram septem annis.

1 But Elisha spoke to the woman whose son he had made to live, saying: Rise, go, you and your household, and peregrinate wherever you find yourself; for the Lord has called a famine, and it will come upon the land for seven years.

2 Quae surrexit, et fecit iuxta verbum hominis Dei: et vadens cum domo sua, peregrinata est in terra Philisthiim diebus multis.

2 She arose and did according to the word of the man of God; and, going with her household, she sojourned in the land of the Philistines for many days.

3 Cumque finiti essent anni septem, reversa est mulier de terra Philisthiim: et egressa est ut interpellaret regem pro domo sua, et pro agris suis.

3 And when the seven years had been finished, the woman returned from the land of the Philistines: and she went out to interpellate the king for her house and for her fields.

4 Rex autem loquebatur cum Giezi puero viri Dei, dicens: Narra mihi omnia magnalia quae fecit Eliseus.

4 But the king was speaking with Gehazi, the servant of the man of God, saying: Tell me all the great things that Elisha has done.

5 Cumque ille narraret regi quomodo mortuum suscitasset, apparuit mulier, cuius vivificaverat filium, clamans ad regem pro domo sua, et pro agris suis. Dixitque Giezi: Domine mi rex, haec est mulier, et hic est filius eius quem suscitavit Eliseus.

5 And while he was recounting to the king how he had raised up the dead man, the woman appeared, whose son he had vivified, crying to the king for her house and for her fields. And Gehazi said: My lord, O king, this is the woman, and this is her son whom Elisha raised up.

6 Et interrogavit rex mulierem: quae narravit ei. Deditque ei rex eunuchum unum, dicens: Restitue ei omnia quae sua sunt, et universos reditus agrorum, a die qua reliquit terram usque ad praesens.

6 And the king questioned the woman, who recounted to him. And the king assigned to her one eunuch, saying: Restore to her all that is hers, and all the revenues of the fields, from the day on which she left the land up to the present.

7 Venit quoque Eliseus Damascum, et Benadad rex Syriae aegrotabat: nuntiaveruntque ei, dicentes: Venit vir Dei huc.

7 Elisha also came to Damascus, and Benadad, king of Syria, was sick; and they announced to him, saying: The man of God has come here.

8 Et ait rex ad Hazael: Tolle tecum munera, et vade in occursum viri Dei, et consule Dominum per eum, dicens: Si evadere potero de infirmitate mea hac?

8 And the king said to Hazael: Take gifts with you, and go to meet the man of God, and consult the Lord through him, saying: Shall I be able to escape from this infirmity of mine?

9 Ivit igitur Hazael in occursum eius, habens secum munera, et omnia bona Damasci, onera quadraginta camelorum. Cumque stetisset coram eo, ait: Filius tuus Benadad rex Syriae misit me ad te, dicens: Si sanari potero de infirmitate mea hac?

9 Therefore Hazael went to meet him, having with him gifts, and all the goods of Damascus, loads of forty camels. And when he had stood before him, he said: Your son Benadad, king of Syria, has sent me to you, saying: Shall I be able to be healed of this infirmity?

10 Dixitque ei Eliseus: Vade, dic ei: Sanaberis: porro ostendit mihi Dominus quia morte morietur.

10 And Elisha said to him: Go, say to him: You will be healed: moreover the Lord has shown to me that he will surely die.

11 Stetique cum eo, et conturbatus est usque ad suffusionem vultus: flevitque vir Dei.

11 And he stood with him, and was disquieted even to a suffusion of the face: and the man of God wept.

12 Cui Hazael ait: Quare dominus meus flet? At ille dixit: Quia scio quae facturus sis filiis Israel mala. Civitates eorum munitas igne succendes, et iuvenes eorum interficies gladio, et parvulos eorum elides, et praegnantes divides.

12 And Hazael said to him: Why does my lord weep? But he said: Because I know what evils you will do to the sons of Israel. Their fortified cities you will set on fire, and their youths you will slay by the sword, and their little ones you will dash to pieces, and their pregnant women you will rip open.

13 Dixitque Hazael: Quid enim sum servus tuus canis, ut faciam rem istam magnam? Et ait Eliseus: Ostendit mihi Dominus te regem Syriae fore.

13 And Hazael said: For what is your servant, a dog, that I should do this great thing? And Elisha said: The Lord has shown me that you will be king of Syria.

14 Qui cum recessisset ab Eliseo, venit ad dominum suum. Qui ait ei: Quid dixit tibi Eliseus? At ille respondit: Dixit mihi: Recipies sanitatem.

14 Who, when he had withdrawn from Elisha, came to his lord. And he said to him: What did Elisha say to you? But he replied: He said to me: You will receive health.

15 Cumque venisset dies altera, tulit stragulum, et infudit aquam, et expandit super faciem eius: quo mortuo, regnavit Hazael pro eo.

15 And when the next day had come, he took a coverlet, and poured water, and spread it over his face: when he died, Hazael reigned in his stead.

16 Anno quinto Ioram filii Achab regis Israel, et Iosaphat regis Iuda, regnavit Ioram filius Iosaphat rex Iuda.

16 In the fifth year of Joram, son of Ahab, king of Israel, and of Jehoshaphat, king of Judah, Joram, son of Jehoshaphat, king of Judah, reigned.

17 Triginta duorum annorum erat cum regnare coepisset, et octo annis regnavit in Ierusalem.

17 He was thirty-two years old when he began to reign, and he reigned for eight years in Jerusalem.

18 Ambulavitque in viis regum Israel, sicut ambulaverat domus Achab: filia enim Achab erat uxor eius: et fecit quod malum est in conspectu Domini.

18 And he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel, just as the house of Ahab had walked: for the daughter of Ahab was his wife: and he did what was evil in the sight of the Lord.

19 Noluit autem Dominus disperdere Iudam, propter David servum suum, sicut promiserat ei, ut daret illi lucernam, et filiis eius cunctis diebus.

19 However, the Lord did not wish to destroy Judah, because of David, his servant, just as he had promised him, to give to him a lamp, and to his sons, all the days.

20 In diebus eius recessit Edom, ne esset sub Iuda, et constituit sibi regem.

21 Venitque Ioram Seira, et omnes currus cum eo: et surrexit nocte, percussitque Idumaeos, qui eum circumdederant, et principes curruum, populus autem fugit in tabernacula sua.

21 And Joram came to Seir, and all the chariots with him; and he rose in the night and struck the Idumaeans who had surrounded him, and the princes of the chariots, but the people fled to their tents.

22 Recessit ergo Edom ne esset sub Iuda, usque ad diem hanc. Tunc recessit et Lobna in tempore illo.

22 Therefore Edom seceded, so as not to be under Judah, unto this day. Then Libnah also seceded at that time.

23 Reliqua autem sermonum Ioram, et universa quae fecit, nonne haec scripta sunt in libro verborum dierum regum Iuda?

23 But the rest of the words of Joram, and all that he did, are not these written in the book of the words of the days of the kings of Judah?

24 Et dormivit Ioram cum patribus suis, sepultusque est cum eis in civitate David, et regnavit Ochozias filius eius pro eo.

24 And Joram slept with his fathers, and was buried with them in the City of David, and Ahaziah his son reigned in his stead.

29 who returned to be healed, in Jezreel: because the Syrians had wounded him at Ramoth while fighting against Hazael, king of Syria. Moreover Ahaziah son of Joram, king of Judah, went down to visit Joram son of Ahab in Jezreel, because he was sick there.

1 But Elisha the prophet called one of the sons of the prophets, and said to him: Gird up your loins, and take this little flask of oil in your hand, and go to Ramoth-Gilead.

2 Cumque veneris illuc, videbis Iehu filium Iosaphat filii Namsi: et ingressus suscitabis eum de medio fratrum suorum, et introduces in interius cubiculum.

3 Tenensque lenticulam olei, fundes super caput eius, et dices: Haec dicit Dominus: Unxi te regem super Israel. Aperiesque ostium, et fugies, et non ibi subsistes.

3 And holding the little flask of oil, you shall pour it upon his head, and you shall say: Thus says the Lord: I have anointed you king over Israel. And you shall open the door, and flee, and you shall not linger there.

4 Abiit ergo adolescens puer prophetae in Ramoth Galaad,

6 And he arose and went into the bedchamber; and he poured oil upon his head, and said: Thus says the Lord God of Israel: I have anointed you king over the people of the Lord, Israel,

7 et percuties domum Achab domini tui, et ulciscar sanguinem servorum meorum prophetarum, et sanguinem omnium servorum Domini de manu Iezabel.

7 and you shall strike the house of Ahab your lord, and I will avenge the blood of my servants the prophets, and the blood of all the servants of the Lord, from the hand of Jezebel.

8 Perdamque omnem domum Achab: et interficiam de Achab mingentem ad parietem, et clausum et novissimum in Israel.

8 And I will destroy the whole house of Ahab; and I will slay from Ahab anyone who urinates against the wall, both the confined and the free in Israel.

9 Et dabo domum Achab, sicut domum Ieroboam filii Nabat, et sicut domum Baasa filii Ahia.

9 And I will make the house of Ahab like the house of Jeroboam son of Nebat, and like the house of Baasha son of Ahijah.

10 Iezabel quoque comedent canes in agro Iezrahel, nec erit qui sepeliat eam. Aperuitque ostium, et fugit.

11 Iehu autem egressus est ad servos domini sui: qui dixerunt ei: Rectene sunt omnia? quid venit insanus iste ad te? Qui ait eis: Nostis hominem, et quid locutus sit.

11 But Jehu went out to the servants of his lord; and they said to him: Are all things right? why did this madman come to you? And he said to them: You know the man, and what he has spoken.

12 At ille responderunt: Falsum est, sed magis narra nobis. Qui ait eis: Haec et haec locutus est mihi, et ait: Haec dicit Dominus: Unxi te regem super Israel.

12 But they answered: It is false; rather, tell us. And he said to them: He spoke to me such and such, and said: Thus says the Lord: I have anointed you king over Israel.

13 Festinaverunt itaque, et unusquisque tollens pallium suum posuerunt sub pedibus eius, in similitudinem tribunalis, et cecinerunt tuba, atque dixerunt: Regnavit Iehu.

13 Therefore they hastened, and each one, taking his cloak, placed it beneath his feet, in the likeness of a tribunal, and they sounded the trumpet, and said: Jehu is king.

14 Coniuravit ergo Iehu filius Iosaphat filii Namsi contra Ioram: porro Ioram obsederat Ramoth Galaad, ipse et omnis Israel contra Hazael regem Syriae:

14 Therefore Jehu, son of Jehoshaphat, son of Nimshi, conspired against Joram: now Joram had besieged Ramoth-Gilead, he himself and all Israel, against Hazael king of Syria:

15 et reversus fuerat ut curaretur in Iezrahel propter vulnera, quia percusserant eum Syri, praeliantem contra Hazael regem Syriae. Dixitque Iehu: Si placet vobis, nemo egrediatur profugus de civitate, ne vadat, et nuntiet in Iezrahel.

15 and he had returned to be treated in Jezreel on account of the wounds, for the Syrians had struck him, he fighting against Hazael king of Syria. And Jehu said: If it pleases you, let no fugitive go out of the city, lest he go and announce it in Jezreel.

16 Et ascendit, et profectus est in Iezrahel: Ioram enim aegrotabat ibi, et Ochozias rex Iuda descenderat ad visitandum Ioram.

16 And he ascended, and set out to Jezreel: for Joram was sick there, and Ahaziah, king of Judah, had gone down to visit Joram.

17 Igitur speculator qui stabat super turrim Iezrahel, vidit globum Iehu venientis, et ait: Video ego globum. Dixitque Ioram: Tolle currum, et mitte in occursum eorum, et dicat vadens: Rectene sunt omnia?

17 Therefore the watchman who was standing upon the tower of Jezreel saw the troop of Jehu coming, and said: I see a troop. And Joram said: Take a chariot, and send to meet them, and let the one going say: Are all things right?

18 Abiit ergo, qui ascenderat currum, in occursum eius, et ait: Haec dicit rex: Pacatane sunt omnia? Dixitque Iehu: Quid tibi et paci? Transi, et sequere me. Nuntiavit quoque speculator, dicens: Venit nuntius ad eos, et non revertitur.

18 Therefore he who had mounted the chariot went to meet him, and said: Thus says the king: Are all things peaceful? And Jehu said: What is it to you and to peace? Move on, and follow me. The watchman also reported, saying: A messenger came to them, and he does not return.

19 Misit etiam currum equorum secundum: venitque ad eos, et ait: Haec dicit rex: Numquid pax est? Et ait Iehu: Quid tibi et paci? Transi, et sequere me.

19 He also sent a second chariot of horses; and he came to them and said: Thus says the king: Is it peace? And Jehu said: What to you and to peace? Pass on, and follow me.

20 Nuntiavit autem speculator, dicens: Venitusque ad eos, et non revertitur: est autem incessus quasi incessus Iehu filii Namsi, praeceps enim graditur.

20 But the watchman reported, saying: He has come up to them, and he does not return: moreover, the gait is like the gait of Jehu son of Nimshi, for he goes headlong.

21 Et ait Ioram: Iunge currum. Iunxeruntque currum eius, et egressus est Ioram rex Israel, et Ochozias rex Iuda, singuli in curribus suis, egressique sunt in occursum Iehu, et invenerunt eum in agro Naboth Iezrahelitae.

21 And Joram said: Yoke the chariot. And they yoked his chariot, and Joram king of Israel went out, and Ochozias king of Judah, each in his own chariot, and they went out to meet Jehu, and they found him in the field of Naboth the Jezreelite.

22 Cumque vidisset Ioram Iehu, dixit: Pax est, Iehu? At ille respondit: Quae pax? Adhuc fornicationes Iezabel matris tuae, et veneficia eius multa vigent.

22 And when Joram saw Jehu, he said: Is it peace, Jehu? But he answered: What peace? The fornications of Jezebel your mother, and her many sorceries, still thrive.

23 Convertit autem Ioram manum suam, et fugiens ait ad Ochoziam: Insidiae, Ochozia.

23 But Ioram turned his hand, and fleeing said to Ochozia: Treachery, Ochozia.

24 Porro Iehu tetendit arcum manu, et percussit Ioram inter scapulas: et egressa est sagitta per cor eius, statimque corruit in curru suo.

24 Moreover Jehu drew the bow with his hand, and struck Joram between the shoulder-blades: and the arrow went out through his heart, and immediately he fell in his chariot.

25 Dixitque Iehu ad Badacer ducem: Tolle, proice eum in agro Naboth Iezrahelitae: memini enim quando ego et tu sedentes in curru sequebamur Achab patrem huius, quod Dominus onus hoc levaverit super eum, dicens:

25 And Jehu said to Badacer the commander: Take up, throw him into the field of Naboth the Jezreelite; for I remember when I and you, sitting in the chariot, were following Ahab, his father, that the Lord laid this burden upon him, saying:

26 Si non pro sanguine Naboth, et pro sanguine filiorum eius, quem vidi heri, ait Dominus, reddam tibi in agro isto, dicit Dominus. Nunc ergo tolle, et proiice eum in agrum iuxta verbum Domini.

26 Surely for the blood of Naboth, and for the blood of his sons, which I saw yesterday, says the Lord, I will repay you in this field, says the Lord. Now therefore take, and throw him into the field according to the word of the Lord.

27 Ochozias autem rex Iuda videns hoc, fugit per viam domus horti: persecutusque est eum Iehu, et ait: Etiam hunc percutite in curru suo. Et percusserunt eum in ascensu Gaver, qui est iuxta Ieblaam: qui fugit in Mageddo, et mortuus est ibi.

27 But Ahaziah, king of Judah, seeing this, fled by the way of the house of the garden: and Jehu pursued him and said: Strike this one too in his chariot. And they struck him on the ascent of Gur, which is near Ibleam: and he fled to Megiddo, and died there.

28 Et imposuerunt eum servi eius super currum suum, et tulerunt in Ierusalem: sepelieruntque eum in sepulchro cum patribus suis in civitate David.

28 And his servants placed him upon his chariot, and took him to Jerusalem: and they buried him in the sepulcher with his fathers in the city of David.

29 In the eleventh year of Joram, son of Ahab, Ahaziah reigned over Judah,

30 venitque Iehu in Iezrahel. Porro Iezabel, introitu eius audito, depinxit oculos suos stibio, et ornavit caput suum, et respexit per fenestram

30 and Jehu came into Jezreel. But Jezebel, hearing of his entrance, painted her eyes with antimony, and adorned her head, and looked out through the window

31 ingredientem Iehu per portam, et ait: Numquid pax potest esse Zambri, qui interfecit dominum suum?

31 Jehu entering through the gate, she said: 'Can there be peace, Zimri, who killed his lord?'

32 Levavitque Iehu faciem suam ad fenestram, et ait: Quae est ista? et inclinaverunt se ad eum duo vel tres eunuchi.

32 And Jehu lifted his face to the window, and said: Who is she? And two or three eunuchs inclined themselves toward him.

33 At ille dixit eis: Praecipitate eam deorsum: et praecipitaverunt eam, aspersusque est sanguine paries, et equorum ungulae conculcaverunt eam.

33 But he said to them: Precipitate her downward: and they precipitated her, and the wall was sprinkled with blood, and the hooves of the horses trampled her.

34 Cumque introgressus esset, ut comederet biberetque, ait: Ite, et videte maledictam illam, et sepelite eam: quia filia regis est.

34 And when he had gone in, to eat and to drink, he said: Go, and see that accursed woman, and bury her: for she is a king’s daughter.

35 Cumque issent ut sepelirent eam, non invenerunt nisi calvariam, et pedes, et summas manus.

35 And when they had gone to bury her, they found nothing except the skull, and the feet, and the palms of the hands.

36 Reversique nuntiaverunt ei. Et ait Iehu: Sermo Domini est, quem locutus est per servum suum Eliam Thesbiten, dicens: In agro Iezrahel comedent canes carnes Iezabel,

36 And having returned, they reported to him. And Jehu said: It is the word of the Lord, which he spoke by his servant Elijah the Tishbite, saying: In the field of Jezreel dogs will eat the flesh of Jezebel,

37 et erunt carnes Iezabel sicut stercus super faciem terrae in agro Iezrahel, ita ut praetereuntes dicant: Haeccine est illa Iezabel?

37 and the flesh of Jezebel shall be like dung upon the face of the ground in the field of Jezreel, so that those passing by may say: Is this that Jezebel?

1 Erant autem Achab septuaginta filii in Samaria: scripsit ergo Iehu litteras, et misit in Samariam, ad optimates civitatis, et ad maiores natu, et ad nutritios Achab, dicens:

1 Now Ahab had seventy sons in Samaria; therefore Jehu wrote letters and sent to Samaria, to the nobles of the city, and to the elders, and to the fosterers of Ahab, saying:

2 Statim ut acceperitis litteras has, qui habetis filios domini vestri, et currus, et equos, et civitates firmas, et arma,

2 As soon as you have received these letters, you who have the sons of your lord, and chariots, and horses, and fortified cities, and arms,

3 eligite meliorem, et eum qui vobis placuerit de filiis domini vestri, et eum ponite super solium patris sui, et pugnate pro domo domini vestri.

3 elect the better, and him who shall have pleased you from the sons of your lord, and set him upon the throne of his father, and fight for the house of your lord.

4 Timuerunt illi vehementer, et dixerunt: Ecce duo reges non potuerunt stare coram eo, et quomodo nos valebimus resistere?

4 They feared vehemently, and said: Behold, two kings were not able to stand before him, and how shall we be able to resist?

5 Miserunt ergo praepositi domus, et praefecti civitatis, et maiores natu, et nutritii ad Iehu, dicentes: Servi tui sumus, quaecumque iusseris faciemus, nec constituemus nobis regem: quaecumque tibi placent, fac.

5 Therefore the stewards of the house, and the prefects of the city, and the elders, and the tutors sent to Jehu, saying: We are your servants; whatever you shall order we will do, nor will we set up a king for ourselves: whatever pleases you, do.

6 Rescripsit autem eis litteras secundo, dicens: Si mei estis, et obeditis mihi, tollite capita filiorum domini vestri, et venite ad me hac eadem hora cras in Iezrahel. Porro filii regis, septuaginta viri apud optimates civitates nutriebantur.

6 But he wrote back letters to them a second time, saying: If you are mine, and obey me, take the heads of your master’s sons, and come to me at this same hour tomorrow in Jezreel. Now the sons of the king, seventy men, were being nurtured with the nobles of the cities.

7 Cumque venissent litteras ad eos, tulerunt filios regis, et occiderunt septuaginta viros, et posuerunt capita eorum in cophinis, et miserunt ad eum in Iezrahel.

7 And when the letters had come to them, they took the king’s sons and killed seventy men, and placed their heads in baskets, and sent them to him in Jezreel.

8 Venit autem nuntius, et indicavit ei, dicens: Attulerunt capita filiorum regis. Qui respondit: Ponite ea ad duos acervos iuxta introitum portae usque mane.

8 But a messenger came and indicated to him, saying: They have brought the heads of the sons of the king. He replied: Put them in two heaps beside the entrance of the gate until morning.

9 Cumque diluxisset, egressus est, et stans dixit ad omnem populum: Iusti estis: si ego coniuravi contra dominum meum, et interfeci eum, quis percussit omnes hos?

9 And when it had dawned, he went out, and standing he said to all the people: You are just: if I conspired against my lord and killed him, who struck down all these?

10 Videte ergo nunc quoniam non cecidit de sermonibus Domini in terram, quos locutus est Dominus super domum Achab, et Dominus fecit quod locutus est in manu servi sui Eliae.

10 See therefore now that not one of the words of the Lord has fallen to the ground, which the Lord spoke over the house of Ahab; and the Lord has done what he spoke by the hand of his servant Elijah.

11 Percussit igitur Iehu omnes, qui reliqui erant de domo Achab in Iezrahel, et universos optimates eius, et notos, et sacerdotes, donec non remanerent ex eo reliquiae.

11 Therefore Jehu struck down all who were left of the house of Ahab in Jezreel, and all his nobles, and acquaintances, and priests, until no remnant of him remained.

12 Et surrexit, et venit in Samariam: cumque venisset ad Cameram pastorum in via,

12 And he rose up and came into Samaria; and when he had come to the Shepherds’ Chamber on the way,

13 invenit fratres Ochoziae regis Iuda, dixitque ad eos: Quinam estis vos? Qui responderunt: Fratres Ochoziae sumus, et descendimus ad salutandos filios regis, et filios reginae.

13 he found the brothers of Ahaziah, king of Judah, and said to them: Who are you? They answered: We are the brothers of Ahaziah, and we have descended to salute the sons of the king and the sons of the queen.

14 Qui ait: Comprehendite eos vivos. Quos cum comprehendissent vivos, iugulaverunt eos in cisterna iuxta Cameram, quadraginta duos viros, et non reliquit ex eis quemquam.

14 And he said: Seize them alive. And when they had seized them alive, they slaughtered them at the cistern next to the Cameram, forty-two men, and he did not leave anyone of them.

15 Cumque abiisset inde, invenit Ionadab filium Rechab in occursum sibi, et benedixit ei. Et ait ad eum: Numquid est cor tuum rectum, sicut cor meum cum corde tuo? Et ait Ionadab: Est. Si est, inquit, da manum tuam.

15 And when he had gone from there, he found Ionadab son of Rechab coming to meet him, and he blessed him. And he said to him: Is your heart right, as my heart is with your heart? And Ionadab said: It is. If it is, he said, give your hand.

Qui dedit ei manum suam. At ille levavit eum ad se in currum:

Who gave him his hand. But he lifted him up to himself into the chariot:

16 dixitque ad eum: Veni mecum, et vide zelum meum pro Domino. Et impositum in curru suo

16 and he said to him: Come with me, and see my zeal for the Lord. And, having put him in his chariot

17 duxit in Samariam. Et percussit omnes qui reliqui fuerant de Achab in Samaria usque ad unum, iuxta verbum Domini, quod locutus est per Eliam.

17 he led him into Samaria. And he struck down all who had remained of Ahab in Samaria, until not one remained, according to the word of the Lord, which he spoke through Elijah.

18 Congregavit ergo Iehu omnem populum, et dixit ad eos: Achab coluit Baal parum, ego autem colam eum amplius.

18 Therefore Jehu gathered all the people, and said to them: Ahab worshiped Baal a little; but I will worship him more.

19 Nunc igitur omnes prophetas Baal, et universos servos eius, et cunctos sacerdotes ipsius vocate ad me: nullus sit qui non veniat, sacrificium enim grande est mihi Baal: quicumque defuerit, non vivet. Porro Iehu faciebat hoc insidiose, ut disperderet cultores Baal.

19 Now therefore call to me all the prophets of Baal, and all his servants, and all his priests: let there be no one who does not come, for there is for me a great sacrifice to Baal; whoever is absent shall not live. Moreover, Jehu was doing this insidiously, in order to destroy the cultists of Baal.

20 Et dixit: Sanctificate diem solemnem Baal. Vocavitque

20 And he said: Sanctify a solemn day for Baal. And he called

21 et misit in univeros terminos Israel, et venerunt cuncti servi Baal: non fuit residuus ne unus quidem qui non veniret. Et ingressi sunt templum Baal: et repleta est domus Baal, a summo usque ad summum.

21 and he sent into all the borders of Israel, and all the servants of Baal came: there remained not even one who did not come. And they entered the temple of Baal: and the house of Baal was replete, from end to end.

22 Dixitque his qui erant super vestes: Proferte vestimenta universis servis Baal. Et protulerunt eis vestes.

22 And he said to those who were over the vestments: Bring forth vestments for all the servants of Baal. And they brought out vestments for them.

23 Ingressusque Iehu, et Ionadab filius Rechab, templum Baal, ait cultoribus Baal: Perquirite, et videte, ne quis forte vobiscum sit de servis Domini, sed ut sint servi Baal soli.

23 And Jehu, and Jonadab son of Rechab, having entered the temple of Baal, said to the worshipers of Baal: Search out and see, lest perhaps any of the servants of the Lord be with you, but that there be only the servants of Baal.

24 Ingressi sunt igitur ut facerent victimas et holocausta: Iehu autem praeparaverat sibi foris octoginta viros, et dixerat eis: Quicumque fugerit de hominibus his, quos ego adduxero in manus vestras, anima eius erit pro anima illius.

24 They therefore entered to make sacrificial victims and holocausts; but Jehu had prepared for himself outside eighty men, and had said to them: Whoever shall escape from among these men whom I shall have brought into your hands, his soul shall be for the soul of that man.

25 Factum est autem, cum completum esset holocaustum, praecepit Iehu militibus et ducibus suis: Ingredimini, et percutite eos, nullus evadat. Percusseruntque eos in ore gladii, et proiecerunt milites et duces, et ierunt in civitatem templi Baal,

25 And it came to pass, when the holocaust had been completed, Jehu commanded his soldiers and his leaders: Enter, and strike them down; let no one escape. And they struck them with the edge of the sword, and the soldiers and the leaders threw them down, and they went into the city of the temple of Baal,

26 et protulerunt statuam de fano Baal, et combusserunt,

26 and they brought forth the statue from the shrine of Baal, and they burned it,

27 et comminuerunt eam. Destruxerunt quoque aedem Baal, et fecerunt pro ea latrinas usque in diem hanc.

27 and they shattered it. They also destroyed the temple of Baal, and made latrines in its place unto this day.

28 Delevit itaque Iehu Baal de Israel:

28 So Jehu obliterated Baal out of Israel:

29 verumtamen a peccatis Ieroboam filii Nabat, qui peccare fecit Israel, non recessit, nec dereliquit vitulos aureos, qui erant in Bethel, et in Dan.

29 nevertheless, from the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin, he did not depart, nor did he forsake the golden calves that were in Bethel, and in Dan.

30 Dixit autem Dominus ad Iehu: Quia studiose egisti quod rectum erat, et placebat in oculis meis, et omnia quae erant in corde meo fecisti contra domum Achab: filii tui usque ad quartam generationem sedebunt super thronum Israel.

30 But the Lord said to Jehu: Because you have diligently done what was right, and was pleasing in my eyes, and have done to the house of Ahab all that was in my heart: your sons up to the fourth generation shall sit upon the throne of Israel.

31 Porro Iehu non custodivit ut ambularet in lege Domini Dei Israel in toto corde suo: non enim recessit a peccatis Ieroboam, qui peccare fecerat Israel.

31 But Jehu did not keep, so as to walk, in the law of the Lord, the God of Israel, with his whole heart: for he did not depart from the sins of Jeroboam, who had made Israel to sin.

32 In diebus illis coepit Dominus taedere super Israel: percussitque eos Hazael in universis finibus Israel,

32 In those days the Lord began to be wearied over Israel: and Hazael struck them in all the borders of Israel,

33 a Iordane contra orientalem plagam, omnem terram Galaad, et Gad, et Ruben, et Manasse, ab Aroer, quae est super torrentem Arnon, et Galaad, et Basan.

33 from the Jordan toward the eastern side, all the land of Gilead, and Gad, and Reuben, and Manasseh, from Aroer, which is over the torrent of Arnon, and Gilead, and Bashan.

34 Reliqua autem verborum Iehu, et universa quae fecit, et fortitudo eius, nonne haec scripta sunt in libro verborum dierum regum Israel?

34 But the rest of the words of Jehu, and all that he did, and his valor, are they not written in the book of the Chronicles of the kings of Israel?

35 Et dormivit Iehu cum patribus suis, sepelieruntque eum in Samaria: et regnavit Ioachaz filius eius pro eo.

35 And Jehu slept with his fathers, and they buried him in Samaria: and Jehoahaz his son reigned in his place.

36 Dies autem, quos regnavit Iehu super Israel, viginti et octo anni sunt in Samaria.

36 Now the days that Jehu reigned over Israel were twenty-eight years in Samaria.

1 Athalia vero mater Ochoziae, videns mortuum filium suum, surrexit, et interfecit omne semen regium.

1 But Athalia, the mother of Ochozias, seeing her son dead, arose and killed all the royal seed.

2 Tollens autem Iosaba filia regis Ioram, soror Ochoziae, Ioas filium Ochoziae, furata est eum de medio filiorum regis, qui interficiebantur, et nutricem eius de triclinio: et abscondit eum a facie Athaliae ut non interficeretur.

2 But Iosaba, the daughter of King Ioram, sister of Ochozias, taking up Ioas, the son of Ochozias, stole him away out of the midst of the king’s sons who were being slain, and his nurse, from the triclinium: and she hid him from the face of Athalia, so that he might not be slain.

3 Eratque cum ea sex annis clam in domo Domini: porro Athalia regnavit super terram.

3 And he was with her six years secretly in the house of the Lord: moreover Athalia reigned over the land.

4 Anno autem septimo misit Ioiada, et assumens centuriones et milites, introduxit ad se in templum Domini, pepigitque cum eis foedus: et adiurans eos in domo Domini, ostendit eis filium regis:

4 But in the seventh year Jehoiada sent, and taking the centurions and the soldiers, he brought them to himself into the Temple of the Lord, and struck a covenant with them; and, adjuring them in the House of the Lord, he showed them the king’s son:

5 et praecepit illis, dicens: Iste est sermo, quem facere debetis:

5 and he commanded them, saying: This is the word which you must do:

6 tertia pars vestrum introeat sabbato, et observet excubias domus regis. Tertia autem pars sit ad portam Sur, et tertia pars sit ad portam, quae est post habitaculum scutariorum: et custodietis excubias domus Messa.

6 let a third part of you enter on the sabbath, and observe the watches of the house of the king. But let a third part be at the Gate Sur, and a third part at the gate which is behind the dwelling of the shield-bearers: and you shall keep the watches of the house of Messa.

7 Duae vero partes e vobis, omnes egredientes sabbato, custodiant excubias domus Domini circa regem.

7 But two parts of you, all who are going out on the sabbath, shall keep the watch of the house of the Lord around the king.

8 Et vallabitis eum, habentes arma in manibus vestris: si quis autem ingressus fuerit septum templi, interficiatur: eritisque cum rege introeunte et egrediente.

8 And you shall encircle him, having arms in your hands: but if anyone should enter the precinct of the temple, let him be slain: and you shall be with the king as he enters and as he goes out.

9 Et fecerunt centuriones iuxta omnia quae praeceperat eis Ioiada sacerdos: et assumentes singuli viros suos, qui ingrediebantur sabbato, cum his qui egrediebantur sabbato, venerunt ad Ioiadam sacerdotem.

9 And the centurions did according to all that Jehoiada the priest had commanded them; and each, taking his own men—those who were entering on the sabbath together with those who were going out on the sabbath—came to Jehoiada the priest.

10 Qui dedit eis hastas, et arma regis David, quae erant in domo Domini.

10 Who gave them spears, and the arms of King David, which were in the house of the Lord.

11 Et steterunt singuli habentes arma in manu sua a parte templi dextera, usque ad partem sinistram altaris, et aedis, circum regem.

11 And each stood, having arms in his hand, on the right side of the temple, up to the left side of the altar and of the edifice, around the king.

12 Produxitque filium regis, et posuit super eum diadema, et testimonium: feceruntque eum regem, et unxerunt: et plaudentes manu, dixerunt: Vivat rex.

12 And he brought out the king’s son, and set upon him the diadem and the testimony; and they made him king and anointed him; and, clapping with the hand, they said: Long live the king.

13 Audivit autem Athalia vocem populi currentis: et ingressa ad turbas in templum Domini,

13 But Athalia heard the voice of the people running: and, entering toward the crowds into the temple of the Lord,

14 vidit regem stantem super tribunal iuxta morem, et cantores, et tubas prope eum, omnemque populum terrae laetantem, et canentem tubis: et scidit vestimenta sua, clamavitque: Coniuratio, coniuratio.

14 she saw the king standing upon the tribunal according to the custom, and the singers, and the trumpets near him, and all the people of the land rejoicing and sounding with trumpets: and she tore her garments, and cried: Conspiracy, conspiracy.

15 Praecepit autem Ioiada centurionibus, qui erant super exercitum, et ait eis: Educite eam extra septa templi, et quicumque eam secutus fuerit, feriatur gladio. Dixerat enim sacerdos: Non occidatur in templo Domini.

15 But Jehoiada commanded the centurions who were over the army, and said to them: Lead her out beyond the precincts of the temple, and whoever follows her, let him be struck by the sword. For the priest had said: Let her not be killed in the temple of the Lord.

16 Imposueruntque ei manus, et impegerunt eam per viam introitus equorum, iuxta palatium, et interfecta est ibi.

16 And they laid hands upon her, and they thrust her along the way of the horses' entrance, next to the palace, and she was slain there.

17 Pepigit ergo Ioiada foedus inter Dominum, et inter regem, et inter populum, ut esset populus Domini, et inter regem et populum.

17 Therefore Jehoiada struck a covenant between the Lord, and between the king, and between the people, that they should be the people of the Lord, and between the king and the people.

18 Ingressusque est omnis populus terrae templum Baal, et destruxerunt aras eius, et imagines contriverunt valide: Mathan quoque sacerdotem Baal occiderunt coram altari.

18 And all the people of the land entered the temple of Baal, and they destroyed his altars, and they crushed the images mightily; Mathan also, the priest of Baal, they slew before the altar.

Et posuit sacerdos custodias in domo Domini.

19 And he took the centurions, and the legions of the Cerethi and the Phelethi, and all the people of the land, and they led the king down from the house of the Lord: and they came by the way of the Gate of the Shield-bearers into the palace, and he sat upon the throne of the kings.

20 Laetatusque est omnis populus terrae, et civitas conquievit: Athalia autem occisa est gladio in domo regis.

20 And all the people of the land rejoiced, and the city came to rest: but Athalia was slain by the sword in the house of the king.

21 Septemque annorum erat Ioas, cum regnare coepisset.

21 And Ioas was seven years old when he began to reign.

1 In the seventh year of Jehu, Joash reigned: and he reigned forty years in Jerusalem. The name of his mother was Zibiah of Beersheba.

2 Fecitque Ioas rectum coram Domino cunctis diebus, quibus docuit eum Ioiada sacerdos.

2 And Joash did what was right before the Lord all the days, during which Jehoiada the priest instructed him.

3 Verumtamen excelsa non abstulit: adhuc enim populus immolabat, et adolebat in excelsis incensum.

3 Nevertheless he did not remove the high places: for the people were still sacrificing and burning incense on the high places.

4 Dixitque Ioas ad sacerdotes: Omnem pecuniam sanctorum, quae illata fuerit in templum Domini a praetereuntibus, quae offertur pro pretio animae, et quam sponte et arbitrio cordis sui inferunt in templum Domini:

4 And Joash said to the priests: All the money of the holy things that shall have been brought into the temple of the Lord by those passing through, that which is offered for the price of a soul, and that which they bring into the temple of the Lord of their own accord and by the decision of their heart:

5 accipiant illam sacerdotes iuxta ordinem suum, et instaurent sartatecta domus, si quid necessarium viderint instauratione.

5 let the priests receive it according to their order, and restore the breaches of the house, if they shall see anything necessary for restoration.

6 Igitur usque ad vigesimum tertium annum regis Ioas, non instauraverunt sacerdotes sartatecta templi.

6 Therefore, up to the 23rd year of King Joash, the priests did not repair the temple’s breaches.

7 Vocavitque rex Ioas Ioiadam pontificem et sacerdotes, dicens eis: Quare sartatecta non instauratis templi? Nolite ergo amplius accipere pecuniam iuxta ordinem vestrum, sed ad instaurationem templi reddite eam.

7 And King Joash called Jehoiada the pontiff and the priests, saying to them: Why do you not restore the repair-works of the temple? Therefore do not any longer receive money according to your order, but render it for the instauration of the temple.

8 Prohibitique sunt sacerdotes ultra accipere pecuniam a populo, et instaurare sartatecta domus.

8 And the priests were prohibited any further to receive money from the people, and to repair the damages of the house.

9 Et tulit Ioiada pontifex gazophylacium unum, aperuitque foramen desuper, et posuit illud iuxta altare ad dexteram ingredientium domum Domini, mittebantque in eo sacerdotes, qui custodiebant ostia, omnem pecuniam, quae deferebatur ad templum Domini.

9 And Jehoiada the high priest took one treasury-chest (gazophylacium), and opened an opening in it from above, and placed it beside the altar, at the right hand of those entering the house of the Lord, and the priests who guarded the doors were putting into it all the money that was being brought to the temple of the Lord.

10 Cumque viderent nimiam pecuniam esse in gazophylacio, ascendebat scriba regis, et pontifex, effundebantque et numerabant pecuniam, quae inveniebatur in domo Domini:

10 And when they saw that there was very great money in the treasury-chest, the scribe of the king and the pontiff would go up, and they would pour out and count the money which was found in the house of the Lord:

11 et dabant eam iuxta numerum atque mensuram in manu eorum, qui praeerant caementariis domus Domini: qui impendebant eam in fabris lignorum, et in caementariis iis, qui operabantur in domo Domini,

11 and they gave it according to number and measure into the hand of those who were over the masons of the house of the Lord: who expended it upon the craftsmen of wood, and upon the masons, those who were working in the house of the Lord,

12 et sartatecta faciebant: et in iis, qui caedebant saxa, et ut emerent ligna, et lapides, qui excidebantur, ita ut impleretur instauratio domus Domini in universis, quae indigebant expensa ad muniendam domum.

12 and they made the repairs: and upon those who were hewing stones, and to purchase timber and the stones that were being quarried, so that the instauration of the house of the Lord might be fulfilled in all the things which required expense for fortifying the house.

13 Verumtamen non fiebant ex eadem pecunia hydriae templi Domini, et fuscinulae, et thuribula, et tubae, et omne vas aureum et argenteum de pecunia, quae inferebatur in templum Domini.

13 Nevertheless, from that same money there were not made the hydriae (water-jars) of the temple of the Lord, and the little forks (flesh-hooks), and the thuribles, and the trumpets, and every gold and silver vessel from the money that was brought into the temple of the Lord.

14 Iis enim, qui faciebant opus, dabatur ut instauraretur templum Domini:

14 For to those who were doing the work it was given, that the temple of the Lord might be restored:

15 et non fiebat ratio iis hominibus, qui accipiebant pecuniam ut distribuerent eam artificibus, sed in fide tractabant eam.

15 and no reckoning was made with those men who received the money to distribute it to the artificers, but they handled it in faith.

16 Pecuniam vero pro delicto, et pecuniam pro peccatis non inferebant in templum Domini, quia sacerdotum erat.

16 But the money for the delict, and the money for sins, they did not bring into the temple of the Lord, because it belonged to the priests.

17 Tunc ascendit Hazael rex Syriae, et pugnabat contra Geth, cepitque eam: et direxit faciem suam ut ascenderet in Ierusalem.

17 Then Hazael, king of Syria, went up and was fighting against Gath, and he took it; and he set his face to go up to Jerusalem.

18 Quam ob rem tulit Ioas rex Iuda omnia sanctificata, quae consecraverant Iosaphat, et Ioram, et Ochozias, patres eius reges Iuda, et quae ipse obtulerat: et universum argentum, quod inveniri potuit in thesauris templi Domini, et in palatio regis: misitque Hazaeli regi Syriae, et recessit ab Ierusalem.

18 For which reason Joash king of Judah took all the sanctified things which Jehoshaphat and Joram and Ahaziah, his fathers, kings of Judah, had consecrated, and what he himself had offered: and all the silver that could be found in the treasuries of the temple of the Lord and in the king’s palace: and he sent it to Hazael king of Syria, and he withdrew from Jerusalem.

19 Reliqua autem sermonum Ioas, et universa quae fecit, nonne haec scripta sunt in libro verborum dierum regum Iuda?

19 But the rest of the words of Joash, and all that he did, are not these written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?

20 Surrexerunt autem servi eius, et coniuraverunt inter se, percusseruntque Ioas in Domo Mello in descensu Sella.

20 But his servants arose, and conspired among themselves, and they struck Joash in the House of Millo, at the descent of Sella.

21 Iosachar namque filius Semaath, et Iozabad filius Somer servi eius, percusserunt eum, et mortuus est: et sepelierunt eum cum patribus suis in civitate David: regnavitque Amasias filius eius pro eo.

21 For Jozachar, son of Shimeath, and Jehozabad, son of Shomer, his servants, struck him, and he died: and they buried him with his fathers in the city of David: and Amaziah his son reigned in his stead.

1 In the twenty-third year of Joash son of Ahaziah, king of Judah, Jehoahaz son of Jehu reigned over Israel in Samaria for seventeen years.

2 Et fecit malum coram Domino, secutusque est peccata Ieroboam filii Nabat, qui peccare fecit Israel, et non declinavit ab eis.

2 And he did evil before the Lord, and, following the sins of Jeroboam son of Nabat, who made Israel to sin, he did not turn aside from them.

3 Iratusque est furor Domini contra Israel, et tradidit eos in manu Hazael regis Syriae, et in manu Benadad filii Hazael, cunctis diebus.

3 And the fury of the Lord was aroused against Israel, and he delivered them into the hand of Hazael, king of Syria, and into the hand of Benadad, son of Hazael, all the days.

4 Deprecatus est autem Ioachaz faciem Domini, et audivit eum Dominus: vidit enim angustiam Israel, quia attriverat eos rex Syriae:

4 But Jehoahaz entreated the face of the Lord, and the Lord heard him: for He saw the distress of Israel, because the king of Syria had crushed them:

5 et dedit Dominus salvatorem Israeli, et liberatus est de manu regis Syriae: habitaveruntque filii Israel in tabernaculis suis sicut heri et nudiustertius.

5 and the Lord gave a savior to Israel, and Israel was freed from the hand of the king of Syria: and the sons of Israel dwelt in their tabernacles as yesterday and the day before yesterday.

6 Verumtamen non recesserunt a peccatis domus Ieroboam, qui peccare fecit Israel, sed in ipsis ambulaverunt: siquidem et lucus permansit in Samaria.

6 Nevertheless they did not depart from the sins of the house of Jeroboam, who made Israel to sin, but walked in them: since indeed even the grove remained in Samaria.

7 Et non sunt derelicti Ioachaz de populo nisi quinquaginta equites, et decem currus, et decem millia peditum: interfecerat enim eos rex Syriae, et redegerat quasi pulverem in tritura areae.

7 And there were not left to Jehoahaz of the people except 50 horsemen, and 10 chariots, and 10,000 foot-soldiers: for the king of Syria had slain them, and had reduced them like dust upon the threshing-floor.

10 In the thirty-seventh year of Joash king of Judah, Joash son of Jehoahaz reigned over Israel in Samaria sixteen years,

11 et fecit quod malum est in conspectu Domini: non declinavit ab omnibus peccatis Ieroboam filii Nabat, qui peccare fecit Israel, sed in ipsis ambulavit.

11 and he did what was evil in the sight of the Lord: he did not turn aside from all the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin, but he walked in them.

12 Reliqua autem sermonum Ioas, et universa quae fecit, et fortitudo eius, quomodo pugnaverit contra Amasiam regem Iuda, nonne haec scripta sunt in libro sermonum dierum regum Israel?

12 Now the rest of the words of Joash, and all that he did, and his might, how he fought against Amaziah king of Judah, are not these written in the book of the words of the days of the kings of Israel?

13 Et dormivit Ioas cum patribus suis: Ieroboam autem sedit super solium eius. Porro Ioas sepultus est in Samaria cum regibus Israel.

13 And Joash slept with his fathers: however Jeroboam sat upon his throne. Moreover Joash was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel.

14 Eliseus autem aegrotabat infirmitate, qua et mortuus est: descenditque ad eum Ioas rex Israel, et flebat coram eo, dicebatque: Pater mi, pater mi, currus Israel et auriga eius.

14 But Elisha was sick with the infirmity by which he also died; and Joash king of Israel came down to him and wept before him, and was saying: My father, my father, the chariot of Israel and its charioteer.

15 Et ait illi Eliseus: Affer arcum, et sagittas. Cumque attulisset ad eum arcum, et sagittas,

15 And Elisha said to him: Bring a bow and arrows. And when he had brought to him a bow and arrows,

16 dixit ad regem Israel: Pone manum tuam super arcum. Et cum posuisset ille manum suam, superposuit Eliseus manus suas manibus regis,

16 he said to the king of Israel: Put your hand upon the bow. And when he had placed his hand, Elisha placed his hands upon the king’s hands,

17 et ait: Aperi fenestram orientalem. Cumque aperuisset, dixit Eliseus: Iace sagittam. Et iecit.

17 and he said: Open the eastern window. And when he had opened it, Elisha said: Shoot the arrow. And he shot.

Et ait Eliseus: Sagitta salutis Domini, et sagitta salutis contra Syriam: percutiesque Syriam in Aphec, donec consumas eam.

And Elisha said: The arrow of the Lord’s salvation, and the arrow of salvation against Syria: and you shall strike Syria at Aphek, until you consume it.

18 Et ait: Tolle sagittas. Qui cum tulisset, rursum dixit ei: Percute iaculo terram. Et cum percussisset tribus vicibus, et stetisset,

18 And he said: Take the arrows. And when he had taken them, he said to him again: Strike the earth with the javelin. And when he had struck three times and had stood still,

19 iratus est vir Dei contra eum, et ait: Si percussisses quinquies, aut sexies, sive septies, percussisses Syriam usque ad consumptionem: nunc autem tribus vicibus percuties eam.

19 the man of God was angry against him, and said: If you had struck five times, or six times, or seven times, you would have struck Syria unto consumption: but now you will strike it three times.

20 Mortuus est ergo Eliseus, et sepelierunt eum. Latrunculi autem de Moab venerunt in terram in ipso anno.

20 Therefore Elisha died, and they buried him. But raiders from Moab came into the land in that very year.

21 Quidam autem sepelientes hominem, viderunt latrunculos, et proiecerunt cadaver in sepulchro Elisei. Quod cum tetigisset ossa Elisei, revixit homo, et stetit super pedes suos.

21 Now certain men, burying a man, saw bandits, and they threw the cadaver into the sepulcher of Elisha. When it had touched the bones of Elisha, the man revived, and stood upon his feet.

22 Igitur Hazael rex Syriae afflixit Israel cunctis diebus Ioachaz:

22 Therefore Hazael, king of Syria, afflicted Israel all the days of Jehoahaz:

23 et misertus est Dominus eorum, et reversus est ad eos propter pactum suum, quod habebat cum Abraham, et Isaac, et Iacob: et noluit disperdere eos, neque proicere penitus usque in praesens tempus.

23 and the Lord had mercy on them, and returned to them because of his covenant which he had with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob: and he was unwilling to destroy them, nor to cast them away utterly, up to the present time.

24 Mortuus est autem Hazael rex Syriae, et regnavit Benadad filius eius pro eo.

24 But Hazael, king of Syria, died, and Ben-hadad his son reigned in his place.

25 Porro Ioas filius Ioachaz tulit urbes de manu Benadad filii Hazael, quas tulerat de manu Ioachaz patris sui iure praelii: tribus vicibus percussit eum Ioas, et reddidit civitates Israel.

25 Moreover Joash, son of Jehoahaz, took the cities from the hand of Ben-hadad son of Hazael, which he had taken from the hand of Jehoahaz his father by right of battle: Joash struck him three times, and restored the cities of Israel.

2 He was twenty-five years old when he began to reign: and he reigned for twenty-nine years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Ioadan of Jerusalem.

3 Et fecit rectum coram Domino, verumtamen non ut David pater eius. Iuxta omnia, quae fecit Ioas pater suus, fecit:

3 And he did what was right before the Lord; nevertheless, not like David his father. In accordance with all that Joash his father had done, he did:

4 nisi hoc tantum quod excelsa non abstulit: adhuc enim populus immolabat, et adolebat incensum in excelsis.

4 except only this: that he did not remove the high places; for the people were still immolating (sacrificing) and burning incense on the high places.

5 Cumque obtinuisset regnum, percussit servos suos, qui interfecerant regem patrem suum:

5 And when he had obtained the kingdom, he struck down his own servants, who had killed the king, his father:

6 filios autem eorum, qui occiderant, non occidit, iuxta quod scriptum est in libro legis Moysi, sicut praecepit Dominus, dicens: Non morientur patres pro filiis, neque filii morientur pro patribus: sed unusquisque in peccato suo morietur.

6 but the sons of those who had killed he did not kill, according to what is written in the book of the law of Moses, as the Lord commanded, saying: Fathers shall not die for sons, nor shall sons die for fathers; but each one shall die in his own sin.

7 Ipse percussit Edom in valle Salinarum decem millia, et apprehendit petram in praelio, vocavitque nomen eius Iectehel usque in praesentem diem.

7 He himself smote Edom in the Valley of Salt, ten thousand, and seized the rock in battle, and he called its name Iectehel unto the present day.

8 Tunc misit Amasias nuntios ad Ioas filium Ioachaz, filii Iehu regis Israel, dicens: Veni, et videamus nos.

8 Then Amaziah sent messengers to Joash, son of Jehoahaz, son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying: Come, and let us see one another.

9 Remisitque Ioas rex Israel ad Amasiam regem Iuda, dicens: Carduus Libani misit ad cedrum, quae est in Libano, dicens: Da filiam tuam filio meo uxorem. Transieruntque bestiae saltus, quae sunt in Libano, et conculcaverunt carduum.

9 And Joash, king of Israel, sent back to Amaziah, king of Judah, saying: The thistle of Lebanon sent to the cedar which is in Lebanon, saying: Give your daughter to my son as a wife. And the beasts of the forest, which are in Lebanon, passed by and trampled the thistle.

10 Percutiens invaluisti super Edom, et sublevavit te cor tuum: contentus esto gloria, et sede in domo tua: quare provocas malum, ut cadas tu et Iudas tecum?

10 By striking you have grown strong against Edom, and your heart has been uplifted: be content with glory, and sit in your house: why do you provoke evil, that you may fall, you and Judah with you?

11 Et non acquievit Amasias.

11 And Amaziah did not acquiesce.

Ascenditque Ioas rex Israel, et viderunt se, ipse et Amasias rex Iuda, in Bethsames oppido Iudae.

And Joash king of Israel went up, and they saw one another, he and Amaziah king of Judah, in Beth-shemesh, a town of Judah.

12 Percussusque est Iuda coram Israel, et fugerunt unusquisque in tabernacula sua.

12 And Judah was struck down before Israel, and they fled, each to his own tents.

13 Amasiam vero regem Iuda, filium Ioas filii Ochoziae, cepit Ioas rex Israel in Bethsames, et adduxit eum in Ierusalem: et interrupit murum Ierusalem, a porta Ephraim usque ad portam anguli, quadringentis cubitis.

13 But Amaziah the king of Judah, the son of Joash, son of Ahaziah, Joash the king of Israel captured at Beth-shemesh, and he brought him to Jerusalem: and he broke down the wall of Jerusalem, from the Gate of Ephraim as far as the Corner Gate, four hundred cubits.

14 Tulitque omne aurum, et argentum, et universa vasa, quae inventa sunt in domo Domini, et in thesauris regis, et obsides, et reversus est in Samariam.

14 And he took all the gold, and the silver, and all the vessels that were found in the house of the Lord, and in the king’s treasuries, and hostages, and returned to Samaria.

15 Reliqua autem verborum Ioas quae fecit, et fortitudo eius qua pugnavit contra Amasiam regem Iuda, nonne haec scripta sunt in libro sermonum dierum regum Israel?

16 And Joash slept with his fathers, and was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel, and Jeroboam his son reigned in his stead.

17 Vixit autem Amasias, filius Ioas, rex Iuda, postquam mortuus est Ioas filius Ioachaz regis Israel, quindecim annis.

17 However, Amaziah, son of Joash, king of Judah, lived fifteen years after Joash, son of Jehoahaz, king of Israel, died.

18 Reliqua autem sermonum Amasiae, nonne haec scripta sunt in libro sermonum dierum regum Iuda?

18 But the rest of the words of Amaziah, are not these written in the book of the chronicles of the days of the kings of Judah?

19 Factaque est contra eum coniuratio in Ierusalem: at ille fugit in Lachis. Miseruntque post eum in Lachis, et interfecerunt eum ibi.

19 And a conspiracy was made against him in Jerusalem: but he fled to Lachish. And they sent after him to Lachish, and slew him there.

20 Et asportaverunt in equis, sepultusque est in Ierusalem cum patribus suis in civitate David.

20 And they transported him on horses, and he was buried in Jerusalem with his fathers in the city of David.

21 Tulit autem universus populus Iudae Azariam annos natum sedecim, et constituerunt eum regem pro patre eius Amasia.

21 But the whole people of Judah took Azariah, sixteen years of age, and constituted him king in place of his father Amaziah.

22 Ipse aedificavit Aelath, et restituit eam Iudae, postquam dormivit rex cum patribus suis.

22 He himself built Aelath, and restored it to Judah, after the king slept with his fathers.

23 Anno quintodecimo Amasiae filii Ioas regis Iuda, regnavit Ieroboam filius Ioas regis Israel in Samaria, quadraginta et uno anno:

23 In the fifteenth year of Amaziah son of Joash, king of Judah, Jeroboam son of Joash, king of Israel, reigned in Samaria, for forty-one years:

24 et fecit quod malum est coram Domino. Non recessit ab omnibus peccatis Ieroboam filii Nabat, qui peccare fecit Israel.

24 and he did what was evil before the Lord. He did not depart from all the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin.

25 Ipse restituit terminos Israel ab introitu Emath, usque ad mare solitudinis, iuxta sermonem Domini Dei Israel, quem locutus est per servum suum Ionam filium Amathi prophetam, qui erat de Geth, quae est in Opher.

25 He himself restored the boundaries of Israel from the entrance of Emath, as far as the Sea of the Wilderness, according to the word of the Lord God of Israel, which he spoke through his servant Jonah son of Amathi, the prophet, who was from Geth, which is in Opher.

26 Vidit enim Dominus afflictionem Israel amaram nimis, et quod consumpti essent usque ad clausos carcere, et extremos, et non esset qui auxiliaretur Israeli.

26 For the Lord saw the affliction of Israel to be very bitter, and that they had been consumed even to those shut up in prison and the outcasts, and that there was no one to help Israel.

27 Nec locutus est Dominus ut deleret nomen Israel de sub caelo, sed salvavit eos in manu Ieroboam filii Ioas.

27 Nor did the Lord speak to erase the name of Israel from under heaven, but he saved them by the hand of Jeroboam, son of Joash.

28 Reliqua autem sermonum Ieroboam, et universa quae fecit, et fortitudo eius, qua praeliatus est, et quomodo restituit Damascum et Emath Iudae in Israel, nonne haec scripta sunt in libro sermonum dierum regum Israel?

28 But the rest of the words of Jeroboam, and all that he did, and his fortitude with which he waged war, and how he restored Damascus and Hamath of Judah to Israel, are not these written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?

29 Dormivitque Ieroboam cum patribus suis regibus Israel, et regnavit Zacharias filius eius pro eo.

29 And Jeroboam slept with his fathers, the kings of Israel, and Zechariah his son reigned in his stead.

2 He was sixteen years old when he began to reign, and for fifty-two years he reigned in Jerusalem: the name of his mother was Jechelia of Jerusalem.

3 Fecitque quod erat placitum coram Domino, iuxta omnia quae fecit Amasias pater eius.

3 And he did what was pleasing before the Lord, according to all that Amaziah his father had done.

5 But the Lord struck the king, and he was leprous until the day of his death, and he used to dwell in a free house apart; but Jotham, the king’s son, was governing the palace, and he will judge the people of the land.

8 In the thirty-eighth year of Azariah, king of Judah, Zechariah son of Jeroboam reigned over Israel in Samaria for six months:

12 This is the word of the Lord, which He spoke to Jehu, saying: Your sons, up to the fourth generation, will sit upon the throne of Israel. And so it came to pass.

13 Shallum son of Jabesh reigned in the thirty-ninth year of Azariah king of Judah; he reigned, however, for one month in Samaria.

14 And Manahem the son of Gadi ascended from Thersa, and came into Samaria, and struck Sellum the son of Iabes in Samaria, and killed him, and reigned in his stead.

16 Tunc percussit Manahem Thapsam, et omnes qui erant in ea, et terminos eius de Thersa: noluerant enim aperire ei: et interfecit omnes praegnantes eius, et scidit eas.

16 Then Manahem struck Thapsa, and all who were in it, and its borders from Thersa: for they had not been willing to open to him: and he killed all its pregnant women, and ripped them open.

17 In the 39th year of Azariah king of Judah, Manahem son of Gadi reigned over Israel for 10 years in Samaria.

19 Veniebat Phul rex Assyriorum in terram, et dabat Manahem Phul mille talenta argenti, ut esset ei in auxilium, et firmaret regnum eius.

19 Pul, king of the Assyrians, was coming into the land, and Menahem gave Pul a thousand talents of silver, that he might be to him for assistance, and that he might firm up his kingdom.

20 Indixitque Manahem argentum super Israel cunctis potentibus et divitibus, ut daret regi Assyriorum quinquaginta siclos argenti per singulos: reversusque est rex Assyriorum, et non est moratus in terra.

20 And Manahem imposed silver upon Israel, upon all the potentates and the wealthy, to give to the king of the Assyrians fifty shekels of silver apiece; and the king of the Assyrians returned, and he did not tarry in the land.

25 But Phacee, son of Romeliae, his commander, conspired against him, and struck him in Samaria, in the tower of the royal house beside Argob and beside Arie, and with him fifty men of the sons of the Gileadites, and he killed him, and reigned in his stead.

29 In the days of Phacee king of Israel came Tiglath-pileser king of Assyria, and he took Ijon, and Abel-beth-Maachah, and Janoah, and Kedesh, and Hazor, and Gilead, and Galilee, and the whole land of Naphtali: and he transferred them to Assyria.

37 In those days the Lord began to send against Judah Rezin, king of Syria, and Pekah, the son of Remaliah.

38 And Jotham slept with his fathers, and was buried with them in the city of David his father, and Ahaz his son reigned in his stead.

2 Achaz was twenty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned for sixteen years in Jerusalem: he did not do what was pleasing in the sight of the Lord his God, like David his father:

3 sed ambulavit in via regum Israel: insuper et filium suum consecravit, transferens per ignem secundum idola gentium, quae dissipavit Dominus coram filiis Israel.

3 but he walked in the way of the kings of Israel: moreover he even consecrated his son, making him pass through the fire according to the idols of the nations, which the Lord had overthrown before the sons of Israel.

4 Immolabat quoque victimas, et adolebat incensum in excelsis, et in collibus, et sub omni ligno frondoso.

4 He also immolated victims, and burned incense on the high places, and on the hills, and under every leafy tree.

5 Tunc ascendit Rasin rex Syriae, et Phacee filius Romeliae rex Israel, in Ierusalem ad praeliandum: cumque obsiderent Achaz, non valuerunt superare eum.

5 Then Rezin, king of Syria, and Pekah son of Remaliah, king of Israel, ascended into Jerusalem to do battle: and when they were besieging Ahaz, they were not able to overcome him.

6 In tempore illo restituit Rasin rex Syriae, Ailam Syriae, et eiecit Iudaeos de Aila: et Idumaei venerunt in Ailam, et habitaverunt ibi usque in diem hanc.

6 In that time Rezin, king of Syria, restored Elath to Syria and cast out the Jews from Elath; and the Idumaeans came into Elath and dwelt there unto this day.

7 Misit autem Achaz nuntios ad Theglathphalasar regem Assyriorum, dicens: Servus tuus, et filius tuus ego sum: ascende, et salvum me fac de manu regis Syriae, et de manu regis Israel, qui consurrexerunt adversum me.

7 But Ahaz sent messengers to Theglathphalasar, king of the Assyrians, saying: I am your servant and your son: ascend, and make me safe from the hand of the king of Syria, and from the hand of the king of Israel, who have risen up against me.

8 Et cum collegisset argentum et aurum, quod inveniri potuit in domo Domini, et in thesauris regis, misit regi Assyriorum munera.

8 And when he had collected the silver and the gold that could be found in the house of the Lord and in the treasuries of the king, he sent gifts to the king of the Assyrians.

9 Qui et acquievit voluntati eius: ascendit enim rex Assyriorum in Damascum, et vastavit eam: et transtulit habitatores eius Cyrenen, Rasin autem interfecit.

9 And he also acquiesced to his will: for the king of the Assyrians went up to Damascus, and devastated it; and he transferred its inhabitants to Cyrene, but he slew Rezin.

10 Perrexitque rex Achaz in occursum Theglathphalasar regis Assyriorum in Damascum: cumque vidisset altare Damasci, misit rex Achaz ad Uriam sacerdotem exemplar eius, et similitudinem iuxta omne opus eius.

10 And King Achaz went to meet Theglathphalasar, king of the Assyrians, in Damascus: and when he had seen the altar of Damascus, King Achaz sent to Uriah the priest its exemplar, and a likeness according to all its workmanship.

11 Exstruxitque Urias sacerdos altare: iuxta omnia quae praeceperat rex Achaz de Damasco, ita fecit sacerdos Urias donec veniret rex Achaz de Damasco.

11 And Uriah the priest constructed the altar: according to all that King Ahaz had commanded from Damascus, so did the priest Uriah until King Ahaz came back from Damascus.

12 Cumque venisset rex de Damasco, vidit altare, et veneratus est illud: ascenditque et immolavit holocausta, et sacrificium suum,

12 And when the king came from Damascus, he saw the altar and venerated it; and he went up and immolated burnt offerings and his sacrifice,

13 et libavit libamina, et fudit sanguinem pacificorum, quae obtulerat super altare.

13 and he poured libations, and he poured out the blood of the peace-offerings, which he had offered upon the altar.

14 Porro altare aereum, quod erat coram Domino, transtulit de facie templi, et de loco altaris, et de loco templi Domini: posuitque illud ex latere altaris ad aquilonem.

14 Moreover the brazen altar, which was before the Lord, he transferred from the face of the temple, and from the place of the altar, and from the place of the temple of the Lord: and he placed it at the side of the altar toward the north.

15 Praecepit quoque rex Achaz Uriae sacerdoti, dicens: Super altare maius offer holocaustum matutinum, et sacrificium vespertinum, et holocaustum regis, et sacrificium eius, et holocaustum universi populi terrae, et sacrificia eorum, et libamina eorum: et omnem sanguinem holocausti, et universum sanguinem victimae super illud effundes: altare vero aereum erit paratum ad voluntatem meam.

15 The king Ahaz also commanded Uriah the priest, saying: Upon the greater altar offer the matutinal holocaust, and the vespertine sacrifice, and the king’s holocaust, and his sacrifice, and the holocaust of all the people of the land, and their sacrifices, and their libations: and all the blood of the holocaust, and all the blood of the victim you shall pour out upon it: but the bronze altar shall be prepared for my will.

16 Fecit igitur Urias sacerdos iuxta omnia quae praeceperat rex Achaz.

16 Therefore Uriah the priest did according to all that King Ahaz had commanded.

17 Tulit autem rex Achaz caelatas bases, et luterem, qui erat desuper: et mare deposuit de bobus aereis, qui sustentabant illud, et posuit super pavimentum stratum lapide.

17 But King Ahaz took away the chased bases, and the laver which was above them: and he removed the Sea from the bronze oxen that were supporting it, and set it upon a pavement laid with stone.

18 Musach quoque sabbati, quod aedificaverat in templo: et ingressum regis exterius convertit in templum Domini propter regem Assyriorum.

18 The Musach also of the sabbath, which he had built in the temple: and the king’s outer entrance he turned in the temple of the Lord because of the king of the Assyrians.

2 Fecitque malum coram Domino: sed non sicut reges Israel, qui ante eum fuerant.

2 And he did evil before the Lord: but not like the kings of Israel, who had been before him.

3 Contra hunc ascendit Salmanasar rex Assyriorum, et factus est ei Osee servus, reddebatque illi tributa.

3 Against him Shalmaneser, king of the Assyrians, went up, and Hoshea became his servant, and rendered tribute to him.

4 Cumque deprehendisset rex Assyriorum Osee, quod rebellare nitens misisset nuntios ad Sua regem Aegypti, ne praestaret tributa regi Assyriorum sicut singulis annis solitus erat, obsedit eum, et vinctum misit in carcerem.

4 And when the king of the Assyrians had detected Hoshea—that, striving to rebel, he had sent messengers to Sua, king of Egypt, so as not to render tribute to the king of the Assyrians as he was accustomed each year—he besieged him, and sent him bound into prison.

5 Pervagatusque est omnem terram: et ascendens Samariam, obsedit eam tribus annis.

5 And he ranged through the whole land: and, ascending to Samaria, he besieged it for three years.

6 Anno autem nono Osee, cepit rex Assyriorum Samariam, et transtulit Israel in Assyrios: posuique eos in Hala, et in Habor iuxta fluvium Gozan, in civitatibus Medorum.

6 But in the ninth year of Hoshea, the king of Assyria captured Samaria, and transferred Israel into Assyria; and he placed them in Halah, and in Habor near the river Gozan, in the cities of the Medes.

7 Factum est enim, cum peccassent filii Israel Domino Deo suo, qui eduxerat eos de terra Aegypti, de manu Pharaonis regis Aegypti, coluerunt deos alienos.

7 For it came to pass that, when the sons of Israel had sinned against the Lord their God, who had led them out of the land of Egypt, from the hand of Pharaoh, king of Egypt, they worshiped alien gods.

8 Et ambulaverunt iuxta ritum gentium, quas consumpserat Dominus in conspectu filiorum Israel, et regum Israel, quia similiter fecerant.

8 And they walked according to the rite of the nations whom the Lord had consumed in the sight of the sons of Israel, and of the kings of Israel, for they had done likewise.

9 Et offenderunt filii Israel verbis non rectis Dominum Deum suum: et aedificaverunt sibi excelsa in cunctis urbibus suis a turre custodum usque ad civitatem munitam.

9 And the sons of Israel offended the Lord their God with words not right: and they built for themselves high places in all their cities, from the tower of the watchmen even to the fortified city.

10 Feceruntque sibi statuas, et lucos in omni colle sublimi, et subter omne lignum nemorosum:

10 And they made for themselves statues, and groves on every lofty hill, and beneath every leafy tree:

11 et adolebant ibi incensum super aras in morem gentium, quas transtulerat Dominus a facie eorum: feceruntque verba pessima irritantes Dominum.

11 and they burned incense there upon the altars in the manner of the nations whom the Lord had transferred from before their face; and they did most wicked deeds, provoking the Lord.

12 Et coluerunt immunditias, de quibus praecepit eis Dominus ne facerent verbum hoc.

12 And they worshiped immundities, about which the Lord had commanded them not to do this word.

13 Et testificatus est Dominus in Israel et in Iuda per manum omnium prophetarum et videntium, dicens: Revertimini a viis vestris pessimis, et custodite praecepta mea, et caeremonias iuxta omnem legem, quam praecepi patribus vestris: et sicut misi ad vos in manu servorum meorum prophetarum.

13 And the Lord testified in Israel and in Judah by the hand of all the prophets and seers, saying: Turn back from your most wicked ways, and keep my precepts and ceremonies according to all the law which I commanded your fathers: and according as I sent to you by the hand of my servants the prophets.

14 Qui non audierunt, sed induraverunt cervicem suam iuxta cervicem patrum suorum, qui noluerunt obedire Domino Deo suo.

14 Who did not listen, but hardened their neck after the neck of their fathers, who were unwilling to obey the Lord their God.

15 Et abiecerunt legitima eius, et pactum, quod pepigit cum patribus eorum, et testificationes, quibus contestatus est eos: secutique sunt vanitates, et vane egerunt: et secuti sunt gentes, quae erant per circuitum eorum, super quibus praeceperat Dominus eis ut non facerent sicut et illae faciebant.

15 And they rejected his statutes, and the pact which he struck with their fathers, and the testifications by which he testified against them: and they followed vanities, and acted vainly: and they followed the nations which were around them, concerning whom the Lord had commanded them that they should not do as they did.

16 Et dereliquerunt omnia praecepta Domini Dei sui: feceruntque sibi conflatiles duos vitulos, et lucos, et adoraverunt universam militiam caeli: servieruntque Baal,

16 And they forsook all the precepts of the Lord their God: and they made for themselves two cast calves, and groves, and they worshiped all the host of heaven: and they served Baal,

17 et consecraverunt filios suos, et filias suas per ignem: et divinationibus inserviebant, et auguriis: et tradiderunt se ut facerent malum coram Domino, ut irritarent eum.

17 and they consecrated their sons and their daughters through fire: and they were serving in divinations and in auguries: and they gave themselves over to do evil before the Lord, so as to irritate him.

18 Iratusque est Dominus vehementer Israeli, et abstulit eos a conspectu suo, et non remansit nisi tribus Iuda tantummodo.

18 And the Lord was vehemently angry with Israel, and removed them from his sight, and none remained except the tribe of Judah alone.

19 Sed nec ipse Iuda custodivit mandata Domini Dei sui: verum ambulavit in erroribus Israel, quos operatus fuerat.

19 But not even Judah itself kept the commandments of the Lord its God: rather it walked in the errors of Israel, which it had wrought.

20 Proiecitque Dominus omne semen Israel, et afflixit eos, et tradidit eos in manu diripientium, donec proiceret eos a facie sua:

20 And the Lord cast away all the seed of Israel, and afflicted them, and delivered them into the hand of despoilers, until he cast them away from his face:

21 ex eo iam tempore, quo scissus est Israel a domo David, et consituerunt sibi regem Ieroboam filium Nabat, separavit enim Ieroboam Israel a Domino, et peccare eos fecit peccatum magnum.

21 from that time onward, when Israel was sundered from the house of David, and they constituted for themselves as king Jeroboam, son of Nabat—for Jeroboam separated Israel from the Lord—and he made them to sin a great sin.

22 Et ambulaverunt filii Israel in universis peccatis Ieroboam quae fecerat: et non recesserunt ab eis,

22 And the children of Israel walked in all the sins of Jeroboam which he had committed: and they did not depart from them,

23 usquequo Dominus auferret Israel a facie sua, sicut locutus fuerat in manu omnium servorum suorum prophetarum: translatusque est Israel de terra sua in Assyrios, usque in diem hanc.

23 until the Lord removed Israel from before his face, just as he had spoken by the hand of all his servants the prophets: and Israel was carried away from his land into Assyria, unto this day.

24 Adduxit autem rex Assyriorum de Babylone, et de Cutha, et de Avah, et de Emath, et de Sepharvaim: et collocavit eos in civitatibus Samariae pro filiis Israel: qui possederunt Samariam, et habitaverunt in urbibus eius.

24 But the king of the Assyrians brought from Babylon, and from Cuthah, and from Avva, and from Hamath, and from Sepharvaim: and he settled them in the cities of Samaria in place of the sons of Israel: who took possession of Samaria, and dwelt in its cities.

25 Cumque ibi habitare coepissent, non timebant Dominum: et immisit in eos Dominus leones, qui interficiebant eos.

25 And when they had begun to dwell there, they did not fear the Lord: and the Lord sent lions among them, which were killing them.

26 Nuntiatumque est regi Assyriorum, et dictum: Gentes, quas transtulisti, et habitare fecisti in civitatibus Samriae, ignorant legitima Dei terrae: et immisit in eos Dominus leones, et ecce interficiunt eos, eo quod ignorent ritum Dei terrae.

26 And it was announced to the king of the Assyrians, and said: The nations which you have transferred, and have caused to dwell in the cities of Samaria, are ignorant of the statutes of the God of the land: and the Lord has sent lions among them, and behold, they are killing them, because they are ignorant of the rite of the God of the land.

27 Praecepit autem rex Assyriorum, dicens: Ducite illuc unum de sacerdotibus, quos inde captivos adduxistis, et vadat, et habitet cum eis: et doceat eos legitima Dei terrae.

27 But the king of the Assyrians commanded, saying: Lead there one of the priests whom you brought from there as captives, and let him go and dwell with them, and let him teach them the statutes of the God of the land.

28 Igitur cum venisset unus de sacerdotibus his, qui captivi ducti fuerant de Samaria, habitavit in Bethel, et docebat eos quomodo colerent Dominum.

28 Therefore, when one of the priests who had been led away captive from Samaria had come, he dwelt in Bethel, and taught them how they should worship the Lord.

29 Et unaquaeque gens fabricata est deum suum: posueruntque eos in fanis excelsis, quae fecerant Samaritae, gens et gens in urbibus suis, in quibus habitabat.

29 And each nation fashioned its own god; and they placed them in the high fanes which the Samaritans had made, nation by nation, in their cities in which they were dwelling.

30 Viri enim Babylonii fecerunt Sochothbenoth: viri autem Cuthaei fecerunt Nergel: et viri de Emath fecerunt Asima.

30 For the men of Babylon made Sochothbenoth: but the men of the Cuthaeans made Nergel: and the men from Emath made Asima.

31 Porro Hevaei fecerunt Nebahaz et Tharthac. Hi autem qui erant de Sepharvaim, comburebant filios suos igni, Adramelech et Anamlech diis Sepharvaim,

31 Moreover the Hevaeans made Nebahaz and Tharthac. But those who were from Sepharvaim were burning their sons with fire to Adramelech and Anamlech, the gods of Sepharvaim,

32 et nihilominus colebant Dominum. Fecerunt autem sibi de novissimis sacerdotes excelsorum, et ponebant eos in fanis sublimibus.

32 and nonetheless they were worshiping the Lord. But they made for themselves, from the lowest, priests of the high places, and they were placing them in the lofty fanes.

33 Et cum Dominum colerent, diis quoque suis serviebant iuxta consuetudinem gentium, de quibus translati fuerant Samariam.

33 And while they worshiped the Lord, they also served their gods according to the custom of the nations from among whom they had been transferred to Samaria.

34 Usque in praesentem diem morem sequuntur antiquum: non timent Dominum, neque custodiunt caeremonias eius, iudicia, et legem, et mandatum, quod praeceperat Dominus filiis Iacob, quem cognominavit Israel:

34 Up to the present day they follow the ancient custom: they do not fear the Lord, nor do they keep his ceremonies, judgments, and law, and commandment, which the Lord had commanded to the sons of Jacob, whom he surnamed Israel:

35 et percusserat cum eis pactum, et mandaverat eis, dicens: Nolite timere deos alienos, et non adoretis eos, neque colatis eos, et non immoletis eis:

35 and he had struck a pact with them, and had mandated to them, saying: Do not fear alien gods, and do not adore them, nor pay them cult, and do not immolate to them:

36 sed Dominum Deum vestrum, qui eduxit vos de terra Aegypti in fortitudine magna, et in brachio extento, ipsum timete, et illum adorate, et ipsi immolate.

36 but the Lord God of yours, who led you out of the land of Egypt in great fortitude, and with an outstretched arm, him fear, and him adore, and to him immolate.

37 Caeremonias quoque, et iudicia, et legem, et mandatum, quod scripsit vobis, custodite ut faciatis cunctis diebus: et non timeatis deos alienos.

37 Ceremonies also, and the judgments, and the law, and the commandment which he wrote for you, keep, that you may do them all days: and do not fear alien gods.

38 Et pactum quod percussit vobiscum, nolite oblivisci: nec colatis deos alienos,

38 And the covenant which he struck with you, do not forget: nor worship alien gods,

39 sed Dominum Deum vestrum timete, et ipse eruet vos de manu omnium inimicorum vestrorum.

39 but fear the Lord your God, and he himself will deliver you from the hand of all your enemies.

40 Illi vero non audierunt, sed iuxta consuetudinem suam pristinam perpetrabant.

40 But they did not listen, but were perpetrating according to their former custom.

41 Fuerunt igitur gentes istae timentes quidem Dominum, sed nihilominus et idolis suis servientes: nam et filii eorum, et nepotes, sicut fecerunt patres sui, ita faciunt usque in praesentem diem.

41 Therefore these nations were indeed fearing the Lord, but nonetheless also serving their idols: for both their sons and their grandsons, just as their fathers did, so they do unto the present day.

1 In the third year of Hoshea, son of Elah, king of Israel, Hezekiah, son of Ahaz, king of Judah, reigned.

2 Viginti quinque annorum erat cum regnare coepisset, et viginti novem annis regnavit in Ierusalem: nomen matris eius Abi filia Zachariae.

2 He was twenty-five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned in Jerusalem for twenty-nine years: the name of his mother was Abi, daughter of Zechariah.

3 Fecitque quod erat bonum coram Domino, iuxta omnia quae fecerat David pater eius.

3 And he did what was good before the Lord, according to all that David his father had done.

4 Ipse dissipavit excelsa, et contrivit statuas, et succidit lucos, confregitque serpentem aeneum, quem fecerat Moyses: siquidem usque ad illud tempus filii Israel adolebant ei incensum: vocavitque nomen eius Nohestan.

4 He himself demolished the high places, and crushed the statues, and cut down the sacred groves, and he broke in pieces the bronze serpent which Moses had made: for indeed up to that time the sons of Israel were burning incense to it: and he called its name Nohestan.

5 In Domino Deo Israel speravit: itaque post eum non fuit similis ei de cunctis regibus Iuda, sed neque in his qui ante eum fuerunt:

5 He trusted in the Lord God of Israel: and so after him there was none like him among all the kings of Judah, nor even among those who were before him:

6 et adhaesit Domino, et non recessit a vestigiis eius, fecitque mandata eius, quae praeceperat Dominus Moysi.

6 and he adhered to the Lord, and did not depart from his footsteps, and he did his commandments, which the Lord had commanded Moses.

7 Unde et erat Dominus cum eo, et in cunctis, ad quae procedebat, sapienter se agebat.

7 Whence also the Lord was with him, and in all things to which he proceeded, he conducted himself wisely.

Rebellavit quoque contra regem Assyriorum, et non servivit ei.

He also rebelled against the king of the Assyrians, and did not serve him.

8 Ipse percussit Philisthaeos usque ad Gazam, et omnes terminos eorum, a turre custodum usque ad civitatem munitam.

8 He himself smote the Philistines as far as Gaza, and all their borders, from the watchtower to the fortified city.

9 Anno quarto regis Ezechiae, qui erat annus septimus Osee filii Ela regis Israel, ascendit Salmanasar rex Assyriorum in Samariam, et oppugnavit eam,

9 In the fourth year of King Hezekiah, which was the seventh year of Hoshea son of Elah, king of Israel, Shalmaneser king of the Assyrians went up against Samaria and besieged it,

10 et cepit. Nam post annos tres, anno sexto Ezechiae, id est nono anno Osee regis Israel, capta est Samaria:

10 and he took it. For after three years, in the sixth year of Hezekiah, that is, in the ninth year of Hoshea king of Israel, Samaria was captured:

11 et transtulit rex Assyriorum Israel in Assyrios, collocavitque eos in Hala, et in Habor fluviis Gozan in civitatibus Medorum:

11 And the king of Assyria carried Israel away into Assyria, and he settled them in Halah, and on the Habor, the river of Gozan, in the cities of the Medes:

12 quia non audierunt vocem Domini Dei sui, sed praetergressi sunt pactum eius: omnia, quae praeceperat Moyses servus Domini, non audierunt, neque fecerunt.

12 because they did not hear the voice of the Lord their God, but transgressed his covenant: all the things which Moses, the servant of the Lord, had commanded, they did not hear, nor did they do.

13 Anno quartodecimo regis Ezechiae, ascendit Sennacherib rex Assyriorum ad universas civitates Iuda munitas: et cepit eas.

13 In the fourteenth year of King Hezekiah, Sennacherib king of the Assyrians went up against all the fortified cities of Judah: and he took them.

14 Tunc misit Ezechias rex Iuda nuntios ad regem Assyriorum in Lachis, dicens: Peccavi, recede a me: et omne, quod imposueris mihi, feram. Indixit itaque rex Assyriorum Ezechiae regi Iudae trecenta talenta argenti, et triginta talenta auri.

14 Then Hezekiah king of Judah sent messengers to the king of Assyria at Lachish, saying: I have sinned; withdraw from me, and I will bear whatever you impose upon me. Therefore the king of Assyria imposed upon Hezekiah king of Judah three hundred talents of silver and thirty talents of gold.

15 Deditque Ezechias omne argentum quod repertum fuerat in domo Domini, et in thesauris regis.

15 And Hezekiah gave all the silver that had been found in the house of the Lord, and in the treasuries of the king.

16 In tempore illo confregit Ezechias valvas templi Domini, et laminas auri, quas ipse affixerat, et dedit eas regi Assyriorum.

16 At that time Hezekiah broke the door-valves of the Temple of the Lord, and the plates of gold which he himself had affixed, and gave them to the king of the Assyrians.

17 Misit autem rex Assyriorum Tharthan, et Rabsaris, et Rabsacen de Lachis ad regem Ezechiam cum manu valida Ierusalem: qui cum ascendissent, venerunt Ierusalem, et steterunt iuxta aquaeductum piscinae superioris, quae est in via Agrifullonis.

17 And the king of the Assyrians sent Tartan, and Rabsaris, and Rabshakeh from Lachish to King Hezekiah with a strong force to Jerusalem: who, when they had gone up, came to Jerusalem, and stood beside the aqueduct of the upper pool, which is on the highway of the Fuller's Field.

18 Vocaveruntque regem: egressus est autem ad eos Eliacim filius Helciae praepositus domus, et Sobna scriba, et Ioahe filius Asaph a commentariis.

18 And they called the king: but Eliacim son of Helcias, prefect of the house, went out to them, and Sobna the scribe, and Ioahe son of Asaph, keeper of the commentaries.

19 Dixitque ad eos Rabsaces: Loquimini Ezechiae: Haec dicit rex magnus, rex Assyriorum: Quae est ista fiducia, qua niteris?

19 And Rabsaces said to them: Speak to Ezechiah: Thus says the great king, the king of the Assyrians: What is this confidence on which you rely?

20 Forsitan inisti consilium, ut praepares te ad praelium. In quo confidis, ut audeas rebellare?

20 Perhaps you have entered into counsel, to prepare yourself for battle. In what do you confide, that you dare to rebel?

21 An speras in baculo arundineo atque confracto Aegypto, super quem, si incubuerit homo, comminutus ingredietur manum eius, et perforabit eam? sic est Pharao rex Aegypti omnibus qui confidunt in se.

21 Or do you hope in Egypt, the reed-staff and broken, upon which, if a man leans, it will go into his hand, shattered, and will pierce it? Thus is Pharaoh, king of Egypt, to all who confide in him.

22 Quod si dixeritis mihi: In Domino Deo nostro habemus fiduciam: nonne iste est, cuius abstulit Ezechias excelsa et altaria: et praecepit Iudae et Ierusalem: Ante altare hoc adorabitis in Ierusalem?

22 But if you say to me: In the Lord our God we have confidence: is he not the one whose high places and altars Hezekiah removed: and he commanded Judah and Jerusalem: Before this altar you shall adore in Jerusalem?

23 Nunc igitur transite ad dominum meum regem Assyriorum, et dabo vobis duo millia equorum, et videte an habere valeatis ascensores eorum.

23 Now therefore pass over to my lord the king of the Assyrians, and I will give you two thousand horses, and see whether you are able to have riders for them.

24 Et quomodo potestis resistere ante unum satrapam de servis domini mei minimis? An fiduciam habes in Aegypto propter currus et equites?

24 And how can you resist before one satrap of the least of the servants of my lord? Do you have confidence in Egypt because of chariots and horsemen?

25 Numquid sine Domini voluntate ascendi ad locum istum, ut demolirer eum? Dominus dixit mihi: Ascende ad terram hanc, et demolire eam.

25 Did I ascend to this place without the will of the Lord, to demolish it? The Lord said to me: Ascend to this land, and demolish it.

26 Dixerunt autem Eliacim filius Helciae, et Sobna, et Ioahe Rabsaci: Precamur ut loquaris nobis servis tuis syriace: siquidem intelligimus hanc linguam: et non loquaris nobis iudaice, audiente populo, qui est super murum.

26 But Eliacim son of Helcias, and Sobna, and Joah said to Rabsaces: We beseech you to speak to us, your servants, in Syriac; since we understand this language; and do not speak to us in Judaic, with the people listening who are upon the wall.

27 Responditque eis Rabsaces, dicens: Numquid ad dominum tuum, et ad te misit me dominus meus, ut loquerer sermones hos, et non potius ad viros, qui sedent super murum, ut comedant stercora sua, et bibant urinam suam vobiscum?

27 And Rabsaces answered them, saying: Has my lord sent me to your lord and to you to speak these words, and not rather to the men who sit upon the wall, that they may eat their dung and drink their urine with you?

28 Stetit itaque Rabsaces, et exclamavit voce magna iudaice, et ait: Audite verba regis magni, regis Assyriorum.

28 So Rabsaces stood and cried out with a great voice in Judaic, and said: Hear the words of the great king, the king of the Assyrians.

29 Haec dicit rex: Non vos seducat Ezechias: non enim poterit eruere vos de manu mea.

29 Thus says the king: Do not let Hezekiah deceive you: for he will not be able to deliver you from my hand.

30 Neque fiduciam vobis tribuat super Dominum, dicens: Eruens liberabit nos Dominus, et non tradetur civitas haec in manu regis Assyriorum.

30 Nor let him impart confidence to you upon the Lord, saying: The Lord, delivering, will deliver us, and this city will not be handed over into the hand of the king of the Assyrians.

31 Nolite audire Ezechiam. Haec enim dicit rex Assyriorum: Facite mecum quod vobis est utile, et egredimini ad me: et comedet unusquisque de vinea sua, et de ficu sua: et bibetis aquas de cisternis vestris,

31 Do not listen to Hezekiah. For thus says the king of the Assyrians: Do what is useful for you with me, and come out to me: and each one will eat from his own vine, and from his own fig tree: and you will drink waters from your own cisterns,

32 donec veniam, et transferam vos in terram, quae similis est terrae vestrae, in terram fructiferam, et fertilem vini, terram panis et vinearum, terram olivarum, et olei ac mellis, et vivetis, et non moriemini. Nolite audire Ezechiam, qui vos decipit, dicens: Dominus liberabit nos.

32 until I come, and I will transfer you to a land which is similar to your land, to a land fruitful and fertile in wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of olives, and of oil and honey, and you will live, and you will not die. Do not listen to Hezekiah, who deceives you, saying: The Lord will free us.

33 Numquid liberaverunt dii gentium terram suam de manu regis Assyriorum?

33 Have the gods of the nations delivered their land from the hand of the king of the Assyrians?

34 Ubi est deus Emath, et Arphad? ubi est deus Sepharvaim, Ana, et Ava? numquid liberaverunt Samariam de manu mea?

34 Where is the god of Emath and Arphad? where is the god of Sepharvaim, Ana, and Ava? Have they delivered Samaria from my hand?

35 Quinam illi sunt in universis diis terrarum, qui eruerunt regionem suam de manu mea ut possit eruere Dominus Ierusalem de manu mea?

35 Which are they among all the gods of the lands who have delivered their own region from my hand, that the Lord might be able to deliver Jerusalem from my hand?

36 Tacuit itaque populus, et non respondit ei quidquam: siquidem praeceptum regis acceperant ut non responderent ei.

36 So the people were silent, and did not answer him anything: since indeed they had received the king’s precept that they should not answer him.

37 Venitque Eliacim filius Helciae, praepositus domus, et Sobna scriba, et Ioahe filius Asaph a commentariis ad Ezechiam scissis vestibus, et nuntiaverunt ei verba Rabsacis.

37 And Eliakim son of Hilkiah, the one set over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah son of Asaph, the recorder (from the commentaries), came to Hezekiah with garments rent, and they announced to him the words of the Rabshakeh.

1 When King Hezekiah had heard these things, he rent his garments, and was covered with sackcloth, and entered the house of the Lord.

2 Et misit Eliacim praepositum domus, et Sobnam scribam, et senes de sacerdotibus opertos saccis, ad Isaiam prophetam filium Amos.

2 And he sent Eliakim, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and the elders of the priests covered with sackcloth, to Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz.

3 Qui dixerunt: Haec dicit Ezechias: Dies tribulationis, et increpationis, et blasphemiae dies iste: venerunt filii usque ad partum, et vires non habet parturiens.

3 Who said: Thus says Hezekiah: This day is a day of tribulation, and of increpation, and of blasphemy: the children have come as far as birth, and the woman in labor has no strength.

4 Si forte audiat Dominus Deus tuus universa verba Rabsacis, quem misit rex Assyriorum dominus suus, ut exprobraret Deum viventem, et argueret verbis, quae audivit Dominus Deus tuus: et fac orationem pro reliquiis, quae repertae sunt.

4 If perhaps the Lord your God will hear all the words of the Rabshakeh, whom the king of the Assyrians, his lord, has sent to reproach the living God and to argue with words which the Lord your God has heard; and make prayer for the remnant that has been found.

5 Venerunt ergo servi regis Ezechiae ad Isaiam.

5 Therefore the servants of King Hezekiah came to Isaiah.

6 Dixitque eis Isaias: Haec dicetis domino vestro: Haec dicit Dominus: Noli timere a facie sermonum, quos audisti, quibus blasphemaverunt pueri regis Assyriorum me.

6 And Isaiah said to them: These things you shall say to your lord: Thus says the Lord: Do not fear because of the words which you have heard, by which the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me.

7 Ecce ego immittam ei spiritum, et audiet nuntium, et revertetur in terram suam, et deiciam eum gladio in terra sua.

7 Behold, I will send into him a spirit, and he will hear a message, and he will return to his own land, and I will cast him down by the sword in his own land.

8 Reversus est ergo Rabsaces, et invenit regem Assyriorum expugnantem Lobnam: audierat enim quod recessisset de Lachis.

8 Therefore Rabshakeh returned and found the king of the Assyrians assaulting Libnah; for he had heard that he had withdrawn from Lachish.

9 Cumque audisset de Tharaca rege Aethiopiae, dicentes: Ecce, egressus est ut pugnet adversum te: et iret contra eum, misit nuntios ad Ezechiam, dicens:

9 And when he had heard about Tharaca, king of Ethiopia, people saying: Behold, he has gone out to fight against you; and he went against him, he sent messengers to Hezekiah, saying:

10 Haec dicite Ezechiae regi Iuda: Non te seducat Deus tuus, in quo habes fiduciam: neque dicas: Non tradetur Ierusalem in manus regis Assyriorum.

10 Say these things to Hezekiah, king of Judah: Let not your God, in whom you trust, deceive you; nor say: Jerusalem will not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria.

11 Tu enim ipse audisti quae fecerunt reges Assyriorum universis terris, quomodo vastaverunt eas: num ergo solus poteris liberari?

11 For you yourself have heard what the kings of the Assyrians did to all the lands, how they devastated them: will you then alone be able to be liberated?

12 Numquid liberaverunt dii gentium singulos, quos vastaverunt patres mei, Gozan videlicet, et Haran, et Reseph, et filios Eden, qui erant in Thelassar?

12 Did the gods of the nations deliver each of those whom my fathers devastated—namely, Gozan, and Haran, and Reseph, and the sons of Eden, who were in Thelassar?

13 Ubi est rex Emath, et rex Arphad, et rex civitatis Sepharvaim, Ana, et Ava?

13 Where is the king of Emath, and the king of Arphad, and the king of the city of Sepharvaim, of Ana, and of Ava?

14 Itaque cum accepisset Ezechias litteras de manu nuntiorum, et legisset eas, ascendit in domum Domini, et expandit eas coram Domino,

14 And so, when Hezekiah had received the letters from the hand of the messengers, and had read them, he went up into the house of the Lord, and spread them out before the Lord,

15 et oravit in conspectu eius, dicens: Domine Deus Israel, qui sedes super cherubim, tu es Deus solus regum omnium terrae: tu fecisti caelum et terram.

15 and he prayed in his sight, saying: Lord God of Israel, who sit upon the cherubim, you are God alone of all the kingdoms of the earth: you made heaven and earth.

16 Inclina aurem tuam, et audi: aperi, Domine, oculos tuos, et vide: audi omnia verba Sennacherib, qui misit ut exprobraret nobis Deum viventem.

16 Incline your ear, and hear: open, O Lord, your eyes, and see: hear all the words of Sennacherib, who has sent to reproach the living God against us.

17 Vere, Domine, dissipaverunt reges Assyriorum gentes, et terras omnium.

17 Truly, O Lord, the kings of Assyria have laid waste the nations, and the lands of all.

18 Et miserunt deos eorum in ignem: non enim erant dii, sed opera manuum hominum ex ligno et lapide, et perdiderunt eos.

18 And they cast their gods into the fire: for they were not gods, but the works of human hands out of wood and stone, and they destroyed them.

19 Nunc igitur Domine Deus noster, salvos nos fac de manu eius, ut sciant omnia regna terrae, quia tu es Dominus Deus solus.

19 Now therefore, O Lord our God, make us safe from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you are the Lord God alone.

20 Misit autem Isaias filius Amos ad Ezechiam, dicens: Haec dicit Dominus Deus Israel: Quae deprecatus es me super Sennacherib rege Assyriorum, audivi.

20 But Isaiah, son of Amoz, sent to Hezekiah, saying: Thus says the Lord God of Israel: The things which you have entreated me concerning Sennacherib, king of the Assyrians, I have heard.

21 Iste est sermo, quem locutus est Dominus de eo:

21 This is the word which the Lord has spoken concerning him:

Sprevit te, et subsannavit te, virgo filia Sion: post tergum tuum caput movit, filia Ierusalem.

She has despised you, and has mocked you, the virgin daughter of Zion: behind your back she has moved her head, the daughter of Jerusalem.

22 Cui exprobrasti, et quem blasphemasti? contra quem exaltasti vocem tuam, et elevasti in excelsum oculos tuos? contra Sanctum Israel.

22 Whom have you reproached, and whom have you blasphemed? Against whom have you exalted your voice, and lifted your eyes on high? Against the Holy One of Israel.

23 Per manum servorum tuorum exprobrasti Domino, et dixisti: In multitudine curruum meorum ascendi excelsa montium in summitate Libani, et succidi sublimes cedros eius, et electas abietes illius. Et ingressus sum usque ad terminos eius, et saltum Carmeli eius

23 By the hand of your servants you reproached the Lord, and you said: In the multitude of my chariots I ascended the high places of the mountains, on the summit of Lebanon, and I cut down its lofty cedars and its choice firs. And I entered even to its borders, and the forest of its Carmel

24 ego succidi. Et bibi aquas alienas, et siccavi vestigiis pedum meorum omnes aquas clausas.

24 I cut down. And I drank alien waters, and with the footsteps of my feet I dried up all the enclosed waters.

25 Numquid non audisti quid ab initio fecerim? Ex diebus antiquis plasmavi illud, et nunc adduxi: eruntque in ruinam collium pugnantium civitates munitae.

25 Have you not heard what I have done from the beginning? From ancient days I formed it, and now I have brought it: and the fortified cities shall be into the ruin of heaps of those who fight.

26 Et qui sedent in eis, humiles manu, contremuerunt et confusi sunt, facti sunt velut foenum agri, et virens herba tectorum, quae arefacta est antequam veniret ad maturitatem.

26 And those who sit in them, humbled in hand, trembled and were confounded; they were made like the hay of the field, and the green grass of the rooftops, which has been dried up before it came to maturity.

27 Habitaculum tuum, et egressum tuum, et introitum tuum, et viam tuam ego praescivi, et furorem tuum contra me.

27 Your habitation, and your egress, and your ingress, and your way I have foreknown, and your fury against me.

29 But for you, Hezekiah, this will be the sign: eat this year what you find; and in the second year, what springs up of its own accord; but in the third year, sow and reap; plant vineyards, and eat their fruit.

30 Et quodcumque reliquum fuerit de domo Iuda, mittet radicem deorsum, et faciet fructum sursum.

30 And whatever remnant of the house of Judah remains will send root downward, and will make fruit upward.

31 De Ierusalem quippe egredientur reliquiae, et quod salvetur de monte Sion: zelus Domini exercituum faciet hoc.

31 From Jerusalem indeed the remnant will go out, and that which is saved from Mount Zion: the zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.

32 Quam ob rem haec dicit Dominus de rege Assyriorum: Non ingredietur urbem hanc, nec mittet in eam sagittam, nec occupabit eam clypeus, nec circumdabit eam munitio.

32 Wherefore the Lord says these things about the king of the Assyrians: He shall not enter this city, nor shoot an arrow into it, nor come before it with a shield, nor shall a fortification encircle it.

33 Per viam, qua venit, revertetur: et civitatem hanc non ingredietur, dicit Dominus.

33 By the way by which he came, he shall return: and he shall not enter this city, says the Lord.

34 Protegamque urbem hanc, et salvabo eam propter me, et propter David servum meum.

34 And I will protect this city, and I will save it for my sake, and for David my servant.

35 Factum est igitur in nocte illa, venit angelus Domini, et percussit in castris Assyriorum centum octoginta quinque millia. Cumque diluculo surrexisset, vidit omnia corpora mortuorum: et recedens abiit,

35 And so it came to pass in that night, the angel of the Lord came and struck down in the camp of the Assyrians 185,000. And when he had risen at daybreak, he saw all the bodies of the dead: and withdrawing he departed,

36 et reversus est Sennacherib rex Assyriorum, et mansit in Ninive.

36 and Sennacherib, king of the Assyrians, returned and stayed in Nineveh.

37 Cumque adoraret in templo Nesroch deum suum, Adramelech et Sarasar filii eius percusserunt eum gladio, fugeruntque in terram Armeniorum, et regnavit Asarhaddon filius eius pro eo.

37 And while he was worshiping in the temple of Nesroch his god, Adramelech and Sarasar, his sons, struck him with the sword; and they fled into the land of the Armenians, and Asarhaddon, his son, reigned in his stead.

1 In diebus illis aegrotavit Ezechias usque ad mortem: et venit ad eum Isaias filius Amos, propheta, dixitque ei: Haec dicit Dominus Deus: Praecipe domui tuae: morieris enim tu, et non vives.

1 In those days Hezekiah fell sick unto death: and Isaiah son of Amoz, the prophet, came to him and said to him: Thus says the Lord God: Set your household in order: for you shall die, and not live.

2 Who turned his face to the wall, and prayed to the Lord, saying:

4 And before Isaiah had gone out into the middle part of the court, the word of the Lord came to him, saying:

5 Revertere, et dic Ezechiae duci populi mei: Haec dicit Dominus Deus David patris tui: Audivi orationem tuam, et vidi lacrimas tuas, et ecce sanavi te: die tertio ascendes templum Domini.

5 Return, and say to Hezekiah, leader of my people: Thus says the Lord, the God of David your father: I have heard your prayer, and I have seen your tears, and behold I have healed you: on the third day you will go up to the temple of the Lord.

6 Et addam diebus tuis quindecim annos: sed et de manu regis Assyriorum liberabo te, et civitatem hanc, et protegam urbem istam propter me, et propter David servum meum.

6 And I will add fifteen years to your days: and I will also free you from the hand of the king of the Assyrians, and this city, and I will protect this city for my sake and for David my servant.

7 Dixitque Isaias: Afferte massam ficorum. Quam cum attulissent, et posuissent super ulcus eius, curatus est.

7 And Isaiah said: Bring a cake of figs. Which, when they had brought and placed upon his ulcer, he was cured.

8 Dixerat autem Ezechias ad Isaiam: Quod erit signum, quia Dominus me sanabit, et quia ascensurus sum die tertia templum Domini?

8 Now Hezekiah had said to Isaiah: What will be the sign that the Lord will heal me, and that I shall go up on the third day to the temple of the Lord?

9 Cui ait Isaias: Hoc erit signum a Domino, quod facturus sit Dominus sermonem, quem locutus est: vis ut ascendat umbra decem lineis, an ut revertatur totidem gradibus?

9 And Isaiah said to him: This will be the sign from the Lord, that the Lord will do the word which he has spoken: do you wish that the shadow should go up by ten lines, or that it should return by as many steps?

10 Et ait Ezechias: Facile est umbram crescere decem lineis: nec hoc volo ut fiat, sed ut revertatur retrorsum decem gradibus.

10 And Hezekiah said: It is easy for the shadow to grow by ten lines; nor do I wish this to be done, but that it should return backward by ten steps.

11 Invocavit itaque Isaias propheta Dominum, et reduxit umbram per lineas, quibus iam descenderat in horologio Achaz, retrorsum decem gradibus.

11 Therefore Isaiah the prophet called upon the Lord, and brought back the shadow along the lines by which it had already descended on the horologe of Ahaz, backward ten steps.

12 In tempore illo misit Berodach Baladan, filius Baladan, rex Babyloniorum, litteras et munera ad Ezechiam: audierat enim quod aegrotasset Ezechias.

12 At that time Berodach Baladan, son of Baladan, king of the Babylonians, sent letters and gifts to Hezekiah: for he had heard that Hezekiah had been ill.

13 Laetatus est autem in adventu eorum Ezechias, et ostendit eis domum aromatum, et aurum et argentum, et pigmenta varia, unguenta quoque, et domum vasorum suorum, et omnia quae habere poterat in thesauris suis. Non fuit quod non monstraret eis Ezechias in domo sua, et in omni potestate sua.

13 Hezekiah, moreover, rejoiced at their arrival, and showed them the house of aromatics, and gold and silver, and various pigments, unguents as well, and the house of his vessels, and everything that he could have in his treasuries. There was nothing that Hezekiah did not show them in his house, and in all his power.

14 Venit autem Isaias propheta ad regem Ezechiam: dixitque ei: Quid dixerunt viri isti? aut unde venerunt ad te? Cui ait Ezechias: De terra longinqua venerunt ad me, de Babylone.

14 Then Isaiah the prophet came to King Hezekiah; and he said to him: What did these men say? or from where did they come to you? And Hezekiah said: From a distant land they have come to me, from Babylon.

15 At ille respondit: Quid viderunt in domo tua? Ait Ezechias: Omnia quaecumque sunt in domo mea, viderunt: nihil est quod non monstraverim eis in thesauris meis.

15 And he replied: What did they see in your house? Hezekiah said: Everything whatsoever is in my house, they saw: there is nothing that I did not show them in my treasures.

16 Dixit itaque Isaias Ezechiae: Audi sermonem Domini:

16 Therefore Isaiah said to Hezekiah: Hear the word of the Lord:

17 Ecce dies venient, et auferentur omnia, quae sunt in domo tua, et quae condiderunt patres tui usque in diem hanc, in Babylonem: non remanebit quidquam, ait Dominus.

17 Behold, days will come, and all things that are in your house will be carried away, and what your fathers have stored up until this day, to Babylon: nothing will remain, says the Lord.

18 Sed et de filiis tuis qui egredientur ex te, quos generabis, tollentur, et erunt eunuchi in palatio regis Babylonis.

18 But even of your sons who will come forth from you, whom you will beget, they shall be carried off, and they shall be eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon.

19 Dixit Ezechias ad Isaiam: Bonus sermo Domini, quem locutus es: sit pax et veritas in diebus meis.

19 Hezekiah said to Isaiah: Good is the word of the Lord that you have spoken: let there be peace and truth in my days.

20 Reliqua autem sermonum Ezechiae, et omnis fortitudo eius, et quomodo fecerit piscinam, et aquaeductum, et introduxerit aquas in civitatem, nonne haec scripta sunt in libro sermonum dierum regum Iuda?

20 The remaining things, moreover, of the words of Hezekiah, and all his fortitude, and how he made the pool and the aqueduct and brought waters into the city—are not these written in the book of the words of the days of the kings of Judah?

21 Dormivitque Ezechias cum patribus suis, et regnavit Manasses filius eius pro eo.

21 And Hezekiah slept with his fathers, and Manasseh his son reigned in his stead.

2 And he did evil in the sight of the Lord, according to the idols of the nations whom the Lord destroyed from before the sons of Israel.

3 Conversusque est, et aedificavit excelsa, quae dissipaverat Ezechias pater eius: et erexit aras Baal, et fecit lucos sicut fecerat Achab rex Israel, et adoravit omnem militiam caeli, et coluit eam.

3 And he turned and built again the high places which Hezekiah his father had dismantled; and he erected altars to Baal, and made groves as Ahab king of Israel had done; and he adored all the host of heaven, and served it.

4 Exstruxitque aras in domo Domini, de qua dixit Dominus: In Ierusalem ponam nomen meum.

4 And he erected altars in the house of the Lord, of which the Lord said: In Jerusalem I will set my name.

5 Et exstruxit altaria universae militiae caeli in duobus atriis templi Domini.

5 And he built altars for all the host of heaven in the two courts of the temple of the Lord.

6 Et traduxit filium suum per ignem: et ariolatus est, et observavit auguria, et fecit pythones, et aruspices multiplicavit, ut faceret malum coram Domino, et irritaret eum.

6 And he made his son pass through the fire: and he practiced soothsaying, and observed auguries, and made mediums (pythons), and multiplied haruspices, so as to do evil before the Lord, and to provoke him.

7 Posuit quoque idolum luci, quem fecerat, in templo Domini, super quod locutus est Dominus ad David, et ad Salomonem filium eius: In templo hoc, et in Ierusalem, quam elegi de cunctis tribubus Israel, ponam nomen meum in sempiternum.

7 He also set the idol of the grove, which he had made, in the temple of the Lord, concerning which the Lord spoke to David and to Solomon his son: In this temple, and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, I will place my name forever.

8 Et ultra non faciam commoveri pedem Israel de terra, quam dedi patribus eorum: si tamen custodierint opere omnia quae praecepi eis, et universam legem, quam mandavit eis servus meus Moyses.

8 And further I will not cause the foot of Israel to be moved from the land which I gave to their fathers: if only they keep in deed all that I commanded them, and the whole law which my servant Moses commanded them.

9 Illi vero non audierunt: sed seducti sunt a Manasse, ut facerent malum super gentes, quas contrivit Dominus a facie filiorum Israel.

9 But they did not hear: rather, they were seduced by Manasseh, to do evil beyond the nations whom the Lord crushed from before the face of the sons of Israel.

10 Locutusque est Dominus in manu servorum suorum prophetarum, dicens:

10 And the Lord spoke by the hand of his servants the prophets, saying:

11 Quia fecit Manasses rex Iuda abominationes istas pessimas, super omnia quae fecerunt Amorrhaei ante eum, et peccare fecit etiam Iudam in immunditiis suis:

11 Because Manasseh, king of Judah, has done these most wicked abominations, beyond all that the Amorites did before him, and he also made Judah to sin by his uncleannesses:

12 propterea haec dicit Dominus Deus Israel: Ecce ego inducam mala super Ierusalem et Iudam: ut quicumque audierit, tinniant ambae aures eius.

12 therefore thus says the Lord God of Israel: Behold, I will bring evils upon Jerusalem and Judah, so that whoever hears, both his ears will tingle.

13 Et extendam super Ierusalem funiculum Samariae, et pondus domus Achab: et delebo Ierusalem, sicut deleri solent tabulae: et delens vertam, et ducam crebrius stylum super faciem eius.

13 And I will extend over Jerusalem the cord of Samaria, and the weight of the house of Ahab; and I will delete/wipe Jerusalem, as tablets are wont to be deleted/wiped; and wiping I will turn it, and I will draw the stylus more frequently over its face.

14 Dimittam vero reliquias haereditatis meae, et tradam eas in manus inimicorum eius: eruntque in vastitatem, et in rapinam cunctis adversariis suis:

14 But I will indeed abandon the remnant of my inheritance, and I will hand them over into the hands of its enemies: and they shall be for devastation, and for rapine to all their adversaries:

15 eo quod fecerint malum coram me, et perseveraverint irritantes me, ex die qua egressi sunt patres eorum ex Aegypto, usque ad hanc diem.

15 because they have done evil before me, and have persevered in provoking me, from the day on which their fathers went out of Egypt, unto this day.

16 Insuper et sanguinem innoxium fudit Manasses multum nimis, donec impleret Ierusalem usque ad os: absque peccatis suis, quibus peccare fecit Iudam, ut faceret malum coram Domino.

16 Moreover Manasseh also shed innocent blood exceedingly much, until he filled Jerusalem to the brim: besides his own sins, by which he made Judah to sin, to do evil before the Lord.

17 Reliqua autem sermonum Manasse, ut universa quae fecit, et peccatum eius, quod peccavit, nonne haec scripta sunt in libro sermonum dierum regum Iuda?

17 But the rest of the words of Manasseh—indeed all that he did, and his sin which he sinned—are not these written in the book of the words of the days of the kings of Judah?

18 Dormivitque Manasses cum patribus suis, et sepultus est in horto domus suae, in horto Oza: et regnavit Amon filius eius pro eo.

18 And Manasseh slept with his fathers, and was buried in the garden of his house, in the garden of Uzza: and Amon his son reigned in his place.

19 Viginti duorum annorum erat Amon cum regnare coepisset: duobus quoque annis regnavit in Ierusalem: nomen matris eius Messalemeth filia Harus de Ieteba.

19 Amon was twenty-two years old when he began to reign: he also reigned for two years in Jerusalem: the name of his mother was Messalemeth, daughter of Harus, of Ieteba.

20 Fecitque malum in conspectu Domini, sicut fecerat Manasses pater eius.

20 And he did evil in the sight of the Lord, just as Manasseh his father had done.

21 Et ambulavit in omni via, per quam ambulaverat pater eius: servivitque immunditiis, quibus servierat pater eius, et adoravit eas,

21 And he walked in all the way in which his father had walked; and he served the unclean things which his father had served, and he adored them,

22 et dereliquit Dominum Deum patrum suorum, et non ambulavit in via Domini.

22 and he abandoned the Lord God of his fathers, and did not walk in the way of the Lord.

23 Tetenderuntque ei insidias servi sui, et interfecerunt regem in domo sua.

23 And his servants laid an ambush for him, and slew the king in his own house.

24 Percussit autem populus terrae omnes, qui coniuraverant contra regem Amon, et constituerunt sibi regem Iosiam filium eius pro eo.

24 But the people of the land struck down all who had conspired against King Amon, and they constituted Josiah his son king in his stead.

25 Now the rest of the words of Amon, which he did, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah?

2 And he did what was pleasing before the Lord, and walked in all the ways of David his father: he did not turn aside to the right, or to the left.

3 Anno autem octavodecimo regis Iosiae, misit rex Saphan filium Aslia, filii Messulam scribam templi Domini, dicens ei:

3 Now in the eighteenth year of King Josiah, the king sent Shaphan, son of Aslia, son of Messulam, the scribe of the temple of the Lord, saying to him:

4 Vade ad Helciam sacerdotem magnum, ut confletur pecunia, quae illata est in templum Domini, quam collegerunt ianitores templi a populo,

4 Go to Hilkiah the high priest, that the money which has been brought into the temple of the Lord may be gathered, which the doorkeepers of the temple have collected from the people,

5 deturque fabris per praepositos domus Domini: qui et distribuant eam his qui operantur in templo Domini, ad instauranda sartatecta templi:

5 and let it be given to the craftsmen through the overseers of the house of the Lord: who also shall distribute it to those who work in the temple of the Lord, for restoring the patched roofs of the temple:

6 tignariis videlicet et caementariis, et iis qui interrupta componunt: et ut emantur ligna, et lapides de lapicidinis, ad instaurandum templum Domini.

6 namely to the carpenters and the masons, and to those who repair the breaches: and that timber be bought, and stones from the stone‑quarries, for restoring the temple of the Lord.

7 Verumtamen non supputetur eis argentum quod accipiunt, sed in potestate habeant, et in fide.

7 Nevertheless, let the silver which they receive not be reckoned to them, but let them have it in their power and in fidelity.

8 Dixit autem Helcias pontifex ad Saphan scribam: Librum legis reperi in domo Domini: deditque Helcias volumen Saphan, qui et legit illud.

8 But Helcias the high priest said to Saphan the scribe: I have found the book of the law in the house of the Lord: and Helcias gave the volume to Saphan, who also read it.

9 Venit quoque Saphan scriba ad regem, et renuntiavit ei quod praeceperat, et ait: Conflaverunt servi tui pecuniam, quae reperta est in domo Domini: et dederunt ut distribueretur fabris a praefectis operum templi Domini.

9 Shaphan the scribe also came to the king, and reported to him what he had commanded, and said: Your servants have collected the money that was found in the house of the Lord, and they have given it so that it might be distributed to the craftsmen by the overseers of the works of the temple of the Lord.

10 Narravit quoque Saphan scriba regi, dicens: Librum dedit mihi Helcias sacerdos. Quem cum legisset Saphan coram rege,

10 Shaphan the scribe also reported to the king, saying: Helcias the priest gave me a book. And when Shaphan had read it before the king,

11 and when the king had heard the words of the book of the Law of the Lord, he tore his garments.

12 Et praecepit Helciae sacerdoti, et Ahicam filio Saphan, et Achobor filio Micha, et Saphan scribae, et Asaiae servo regis, dicens:

12 And he commanded Hilkiah the priest, and Ahikam the son of Shaphan, and Achbor the son of Micha, and Shaphan the scribe, and Asaiah the servant of the king, saying:

13 Ite et consulite Dominum super me, et super populo, et super omni Iuda, de verbis voluminis istius, quod inventum est: magna enim ira Domini succensa est contra nos: quia non audierunt patres nostri verba libri huius, ut facerent omne quod scriptum est nobis.

13 Go and consult the Lord on behalf of me, and on behalf of the people, and on behalf of all Judah, concerning the words of this volume which has been found: for great ire of the Lord has been kindled against us, because our fathers did not hear the words of this book, to do all that is written for us.

14 Ierunt itaque Helcias sacerdos, et Ahicam, et Achobor, et Sapham, et Asaia, ad Holdam prophetidem, uxorem Sellum, filii Thecuae, filii Araas custodis vestium, quae habitabat in Ierusalem in Secunda: locutique sunt ad eam.

14 And so Helcias the priest, and Ahicam, and Achobor, and Sapham, and Asaia, went to Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Sellum, son of Thecua, son of Araas, custodian of the garments, who dwelt in Jerusalem in the Second (Quarter): and they spoke to her.

15 Et illa respondit eis: Haec dicit Dominus Deus Israel: Dicite viro, qui misit vos ad me:

15 And she answered them: Thus says the Lord God of Israel: Say to the man who sent you to me:

16 Haec dicit Dominus: Ecce, ego adducam mala super locum istum, et super habitatores eius, omnia verba legis quae legit rex Iuda:

16 Thus says the Lord: Behold, I will bring evils upon this place, and upon its inhabitants, all the words of the law which the king of Judah read:

17 quia dereliquerunt me, et sacrificaverunt diis alienis, irritantes me in cunctis operibus manuum suarum: et succendetur indignatio mea in loco hoc, et non extinguetur.

17 because they have forsaken me, and have sacrificed to foreign gods, provoking me in all the works of their hands: and my indignation will be kindled in this place, and it will not be extinguished.

18 Regi autem Iuda, qui misit vos ut consuleretis Dominum, sic dicetis: Haec dicit Dominus Deus Israel: Pro eo quod audisti verba voluminis,

18 But to the king of Judah, who sent you that you might consult the Lord, thus you shall say: Thus says the Lord God of Israel: Because you have heard the words of the scroll,

19 et perterritum est cor tuum, et humiliatus es coram Domino, auditis sermonibus contra locum istum, et habitatores eius, quod videlicet fierent in stuporem et in maledictum: et scidisti vestimenta tua, et flevisti coram me, et ego audivi, ait Dominus:

19 and your heart was terrified, and you were humbled before the Lord, when you heard the words against this place and its inhabitants, namely that they would become an astonishment and a malediction; and you tore your garments, and you wept before me, and I have heard, says the Lord:

20 idcirco colligam te ad patres tuos, et colligeris ad sepulchrum tuum in pace, ut non videant oculi tui omnia mala quae inducturus sum super locum istum.

20 therefore I will gather you to your fathers, and you will be gathered to your sepulcher in peace, so that your eyes may not see all the evils which I am about to bring upon this place.

2 And the king ascended the Temple of the Lord, and all the men of Judah, and all who inhabited Jerusalem with him, the priests and the prophets, and all the people from small to great: and he read, with all listening, all the words of the book of the covenant, which was found in the house of the Lord.

3 Stetitque rex super gradum: et foedus percussit coram Domino, ut ambularent post Dominum, et custodirent praecepta eius, et testimonia, et caeremonias in omni corde, et in tota anima, et suscitarent verba foederis huius, quae scripta erant in libro illo: acquievitque populus pacto.

3 And the king stood upon the step: and struck a covenant before the Lord, that they would walk after the Lord, and keep his precepts, and testimonies, and ceremonies with all heart, and with the whole soul, and to fulfill the words of this covenant, which were written in that book: and the people acquiesced in the pact.

4 Et praecepit rex Helciae pontifici, et sacerdotibus secundi ordinis, et ianitoribus, ut proicerent de templo Domini omnia vasa, quae facta fuerant Baal, et in luco, et universae militiae caeli: et combussit ea foris Ierusalem in convalle Cedron, et tulit pulverem eorum in Bethel.

4 And the king commanded Hilkiah the pontiff, and the priests of the second order, and the doorkeepers, to throw out from the temple of the Lord all the vessels that had been made for Baal, and for the grove, and for all the host of heaven: and he burned them outside Jerusalem in the valley of Cedron, and took their dust to Bethel.

5 Et delevit aruspices, quos posuerant reges Iuda ad sacrificandum in excelsis per civitates Iuda, et in circuitu Ierusalem: et eos, qui adolebant incensum Baal, et soli, et lunae, et duodecim signis, et omni militiae caeli.

5 And he destroyed the haruspices, whom the kings of Judah had appointed for sacrificing in the high places throughout the cities of Judah and around Jerusalem; and those who were burning incense to Baal, and to the sun, and to the moon, and to the twelve signs, and to all the host of heaven.

6 Et efferri fecit lucum de domo Domini foras Ierusalem in convalle Cedron, et combussit eum ibi, et redegit in pulverem, et proiecit super sepulchra vulgi.

6 And he caused the grove to be carried out from the house of the Lord outside Jerusalem into the valley of Kidron, and he burned it there, and reduced it to powder, and cast it upon the tombs of the common people.

7 Destruxit quoque aediculas effeminatorum, quae erant in domo Domini, pro quibus mulieres texebant quasi domunculas luci.

7 He also destroyed the little shrines of the effeminate men, which were in the house of the Lord, for which the women were weaving, as if little houses, for the grove.

8 Congregavitque omnes sacerdotes de civitatibus Iuda: et contaminavit excelsa, ubi sacrificabant sacerdotes de Gabaa usque Bersabee: et destruxit aras portarum in introitu ostii Iosue principis civitatis, quod erat ad sinistram portae civitatis.

8 And he congregated all the priests from the cities of Judah: and he defiled the high-places, where the priests were sacrificing, from Gibeah unto Beersheba: and he destroyed the altars of the gates at the entrance of the gate of Joshua, the prince of the city, which was on the left of the city gate.

9 Verumtamen non ascendebant sacerdotes excelsorum ad altare Domini in Ierusalem: sed tantum comedebant azyma in medio fratrum suorum.

9 Nevertheless the priests of the high places did not ascend to the altar of the Lord in Jerusalem: but only ate unleavened bread in the midst of their brothers.

10 Contaminavit quoque Topheth, quod est in convalle filii Ennom: ut nemo consecraret filium suum aut filiam per ignem, Moloch.

10 He also contaminated Topheth, which is in the valley of the son of Hinnom: so that no one might consecrate his son or his daughter through fire to Moloch.

11 Abstulit quoque equos, quos dederant reges Iuda soli, in introitu templi Domini iuxta exedram Nathanmelech eunuchi, qui erat in Pharurim: currus autem solis combussit igni.

11 He also removed the horses which the kings of Judah had given to the Sun, at the entrance of the temple of the Lord beside the exedra of Nathanmelech the eunuch, which was in Pharurim: and the chariots of the Sun he burned with fire.

12 Altaria quoque, quae erant super tecta coenaculi Achaz, quae fecerant reges Iuda, et altaria quae fecerat Manasses in duobus atriis templi Domini, destruxit rex, et cucurrit inde, et dispersit cinerem eorum in torrentem Cedron.

12 And the altars also which were on the roof of the upper chamber of Ahaz, which the kings of Judah had made, and the altars which Manasseh had made in the two courts of the temple of the Lord, the king demolished, and he hurried from there, and scattered their ashes into the torrent Kidron.

13 Excelsa quoque, quae erant in Ierusalem ad dexteram partem montis offensionis, quae aedificaverat Salomon rex Israel Astaroth idolo Sidoniorum, et Chamos offensioni Moab, et Melchom abominationi filiorum Ammon, polluit rex.

13 The high places also, which were in Jerusalem on the right-hand part of the Mount of Offense, which Solomon king of Israel had built for Astaroth, the idol of the Sidonians, and for Chamos, the offense of Moab, and for Melchom, the abomination of the sons of Ammon, the king polluted.

14 Et contrivit statuas, et succidit lucos: replevitque loca eorum ossibus mortuorum.

14 And he crushed the statues, and cut down the groves: and he filled their places with the bones of the dead.

15 Insuper et altare, quod erat in Bethel, et excelsum, quod fecerat Ieroboam filius Nabat, qui peccare fecit Israel: et altare illud, et excelsum destruxit, atque combussit, et comminuit in pulverem, succenditque etiam lucum.

15 Moreover also the altar that was in Bethel, and the high-place which Jeroboam son of Nebat—who made Israel to sin—had made: and that altar and the high-place he destroyed, and burned, and crushed to powder, and he also set the grove on fire.

16 Et conversus Iosias, vidit ibi sepulchra, quae erant in monte: misitque et tulit ossa de sepulchris, et combussit ea super altare, et polluit illud iuxta verbum Domini, quod locutus est vir Dei, qui praedixerat verba haec.

16 And Josiah, having turned, saw there the sepulchers which were on the mountain: and he sent and took bones out of the sepulchers, and burned them upon the altar, and defiled it according to the word of the Lord, which the man of God had spoken, who had foretold these words.

17 Et ait: Quis est titulus ille, quem video? Responderuntque ei cives urbis illius: Sepulchrum est hominis Dei, qui venit de Iuda, et praedixit verba haec, quae fecisti super altare Bethel.

17 And he said: What is that monument which I see? And the citizens of that city answered him: It is the sepulcher of the man of God, who came from Judah, and foretold these words which you have done upon the altar of Bethel.

18 Et ait: Dimitte eum, nemo commoveat ossa eius. Et intacta manserunt ossa illius cum ossibus prophetae, qui venerat de Samaria.

18 And he said: Leave him; let no one move his bones. And his bones remained untouched together with the bones of the prophet who had come from Samaria.

19 Insuper et omnia fana excelsorum, quae erant in civitatibus Samariae, quae fecerant reges Israel ad irritandum Dominum, abstulit Iosias: et fecit eis secundum omnia opera quae fecerat in Bethel.

19 Moreover Josiah removed also all the fanes of the high places, which were in the cities of Samaria, which the kings of Israel had made to provoke the Lord; and he did to them according to all the works that he had done in Bethel.

20 Et occidit universos sacerdotes excelsorum, qui erant ibi super altaria: et combussit ossa humana super ea: reversusque est Ierusalem.

20 And he killed all the priests of the high places, who were there upon the altars: and he burned human bones upon them: and he returned to Jerusalem.

21 Et praecepit omni populo, dicens: Facite Phase Domino Deo vestro, secundum quod scriptum est in libro foederis huius.

21 And he commanded all the people, saying: Keep the Passover to the Lord your God, according to what is written in the book of this covenant.

22 Nec enim factum est Phase tale a diebus iudicum, qui iudicaverunt Israel, et omnium dierum regum Israel, et regum Iuda,

22 For such a Passover had not been celebrated since the days of the judges who judged Israel, and all the days of the kings of Israel and the kings of Judah,

23 sicut in octavodecimo anno regis Iosiae factum est Phase istud Domino in Ierusalem.

23 as in the eighteenth year of King Josiah this Passover was done to the Lord in Jerusalem.

24 But also the mediums and soothsayers, and the images of idols, and the unclean things and abominations that had been in the land of Judah and in Jerusalem, Josiah removed, in order to establish the words of the law which are written in the book that Hilkiah the priest found in the temple of the Lord.

25 Similis illi non fuit ante eum rex, qui reverteretur ad Dominum in omni corde suo, et in tota anima sua, et in universa virtute sua iuxta omnem legem Moysi: neque post eum surrexit similis illi.

25 There was not before him a king like him, who reverted to the Lord with all his heart, and with all his soul, and with all his strength, according to all the law of Moses: nor after him did there arise one like him.

26 Verumtamen non est aversus Dominus ab ira furoris sui magni, quo iratus est furor eius contra Iudam: propter irritationes, quibus provocaverat eum Manasses.

26 Nevertheless the Lord was not turned away from the wrath of his great fury, by which his fury was enraged against Judah: on account of the irritations with which Manasseh had provoked him.

27 Dixit itaque Dominus: Etiam Iudam auferam a facie mea, sicut abstuli Israel: et proiciam civitatem hanc, quam elegi Ierusalem, et domum, de qua dixi: Erit nomen meum ibi.

27 Therefore the Lord said: I will also take away Judah from before my face, just as I took away Israel; and I will cast away this city, which I have chosen, Jerusalem, and the house of which I said: My name shall be there.

28 Reliqua autem sermonum Iosiae, et universa quae fecit, nonne haec scripta sunt in libro verborum dierum regum Iuda?

28 But the rest of the words of Josiah, and all that he did, are not these written in the book of the words of the days of the kings of Judah?

29 In diebus eius ascendit Pharao Nechao rex Aegypti, contra regem Assyriorum ad flumen Euphraten: et abiit Iosias rex in occursum eius: et occisus est in Mageddo, cum vidisset eum.

29 In his days Pharaoh Necho king of Egypt went up against the king of the Assyrians to the river Euphrates: and Josiah the king went to meet him: and he was slain at Megiddo, when he saw him.

30 Et portaverunt eum servi sui mortuum de Mageddo: et pertulerunt in Ierusalem, et sepelierunt eum in sepulchro suo. Tulitque populus terrae Ioachaz filium Iosiae: et unxerunt eum, et constituerunt eum regem pro patre suo.

30 And his servants carried him dead from Megiddo: and they brought him into Jerusalem, and buried him in his own sepulcher. And the people of the land took Jehoahaz, the son of Josiah: and they anointed him, and constituted him king in place of his father.

32 And he did evil before the Lord, according to all that his fathers had done.

33 Vinxitque eum Pharao Nechao in Rebla, quae est in terra Emath, ne regnaret in Ierusalem: et imposuit mulctam terrae centum talentis argenti, et talento auri.

33 And Pharaoh Necho bound him in Riblah, which is in the land of Hamath, so that he might not reign in Jerusalem: and he imposed a mulct upon the land of 100 talents of silver, and a talent of gold.

34 Regemque constituit Pharao Nechao Eliacim filium Iosiae pro Iosia patre eius: vertitque nomen eius Ioakim. Porro Ioachaz tulit, et duxit in Aegyptum, et mortuus est ibi.

34 And Pharaoh Necho appointed Eliakim, son of Josiah, as king in place of Josiah his father: and he changed his name to Jehoiakim. Moreover, he took Jehoahaz, and led him into Egypt, and he died there.

35 Argentum autem et aurum dedit Ioakim Pharaoni, cum indixisset terrae per singulos, ut conferretur iuxta praeceptum Pharaonis: et unumquemque iuxta vires suas exegit, tam argentum quam aurum de populo terrae: ut daret Pharaoni Nechao.

35 But Jehoiakim gave silver and gold to the Pharaoh, when he had imposed an assessment upon the land per person, so that it might be contributed according to the precept of the Pharaoh: and he exacted from each one according to his means, both silver and gold, from the people of the land, in order to give it to Pharaoh Necho.

36 Viginti quinque annorum erat Ioakim cum regnare coepisset: et undecim annis regnavit in Ierusalem: nomen matris eius Zebida filia Phadaia de Ruma.

36 Ioakim was twenty-five years old when he began to reign: and for eleven years he reigned in Jerusalem: the name of his mother was Zebida, daughter of Phadaia, of Ruma.

37 And he did evil before the Lord according to all that his fathers had done.

1 In diebus eius ascendit Nabuchodonosor rex Babylonis, et factus est ei Ioakim servus tribus annis: et rursum rebellavit contra eum.

1 In his days Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, went up, and Jehoiakim became his servant for three years: and again he rebelled against him.

2 Immisitque ei Dominus latrunculos Chaldaeorum, et latrunculos Syriae, et latrunculos Moab, et latrunculos filiorum Ammon: et immisit eos in Iudam, ut disperderent eum, iuxta verbum Domini, quod locutus fuerat per servos suos prophetas.

2 And the Lord sent against him raiding bands of the Chaldeans, and bands of Syria, and bands of Moab, and bands of the sons of Ammon: and he sent them into Judah, to destroy it, according to the word of the Lord, which he had spoken through his servants the prophets.

3 Factum est autem hoc per verbum Domini contra Iudam, ut auferret eum coram se propter peccata Manasse universa quae fecit,

3 But this came to pass by the word of the Lord against Judah, to remove him from before his face because of the sins of Manasseh, all that he did,

4 et propter sanguinem innoxium, quem effudit, et implevit Ierusalem cruore innocentium: et ob hanc rem noluit Dominus propitiari.

4 and on account of the innocent blood which he shed, and he filled Jerusalem with the gore of the innocent: and for this reason the Lord was not willing to be propitiated.

6 and Ioachin his son reigned in his place.

7 Et ultra non addidit rex Aegypti, ut egrederetur de terra sua: tulerat enim rex Babylonis a rivo Aegypti usque ad fluvium Euphraten, omnia quae fuerant regis Aegypti.

7 And thereafter the king of Egypt no longer went out from his own land: for the king of Babylon had taken, from the Brook of Egypt as far as the river Euphrates, all that had belonged to the king of Egypt.

10 At that time the servants of Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, went up into Jerusalem, and the city was surrounded with siegeworks.

11 Venitque Nabuchodonosor rex Babylonis ad civitatem cum servis suis ut oppugnarent eam.

11 And Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, came to the city with his servants, to besiege it.

12 Egressusque est Ioachin rex Iuda ad regem Babylonis, ipse et mater eius, et servi eius, et principes eius, et eunuchi eius: et suscepit eum rex Babylonis anno octavo regni sui.

12 And Jehoiachin, king of Judah, went out to the king of Babylon—he himself and his mother, and his servants, and his princes, and his eunuchs; and the king of Babylon took him in the 8th year of his reign.

13 Et protulit inde omnes thesauros domus Domini, et thesauros domus regiae: et concidit universa vasa aurea, quae fecerat Salomon rex Israel in templo Domini iuxta verbum Domini.

13 And he brought out from there all the treasures of the house of the Lord, and the treasures of the royal house; and he cut to pieces all the golden vessels which Solomon, king of Israel, had made in the temple of the Lord, according to the word of the Lord.

14 Et transtulit omnem Ierusalem, et universos principes, et omnes fortes exercitus, decem millia, in captivitatem: et omnem artificem et clusorem: nihilque relictum est, exceptis pauperibus populi terrae.

14 And he carried away all Jerusalem, and all the princes, and all the mighty men of the army, 10,000, into captivity; and every artisan and smith; and nothing was left, except the poor of the people of the land.

15 Transtulit quoque Ioachin in Babylonem, et matrem regis, et uxores regis, et eunuchos eius: et iudices terrae duxit in captivitatem de Ierusalem in Babylonem.

15 He also transferred Ioachin to Babylon, and the king’s mother, and the king’s wives, and his eunuchs; and the judges of the land he led into captivity from Jerusalem to Babylon.

16 Et omnes viros robustos, septem millia, et artifices, et clusores mille, omnes viros fortes et bellatores: duxitque eos rex Babylonis captivos in Babylonem.

16 And all the robust men, seven thousand, and the artisans, and the smiths one thousand, all the strong men and warriors: and the king of Babylon led them as captives into Babylon.

17 Et constituit Matthaniam patruum eius pro eo: imposuitque nomen ei Sedeciam.

17 And he appointed Mattaniah, his paternal uncle, in his stead: and he imposed upon him the name Zedekiah.

18 Vigesimum et primum annum aetatis habebat Sedecias cum regnare coepisset, et undecim annis regnavit in Ierusalem: nomen matris eius erat Amital, filia Ieremiae, de Lobna.

18 Zedekiah was twenty-one years old when he began to reign, and he reigned in Jerusalem for eleven years: the name of his mother was Amital, daughter of Jeremiah, from Libnah.

19 Et fecit malum coram Domino, iuxta omnia quae fecerat Ioakim.

19 And he did evil in the sight of the Lord, according to all that Jehoiakim had done.

20 Irascebatur enim Dominus contra Ierusalem et contra Iudam, donec proiceret eos a facie sua: recessitque Sedecias a rege Babylonis.

20 For the Lord was angered against Jerusalem and against Judah, until he cast them away from his face: and Zedekiah rebelled against the king of Babylon.

3 nona die mensis: praevaluitque fames in civitate, nec erat panis populo terrae.

3 on the ninth day of the month: and famine prevailed in the city, and there was no bread for the people of the land.

4 Et interrupta est civitas: et omnes viri bellatores nocte fugerunt per viam portae, quae est inter duplicem murum ad hortum regis. Porro Chaldaei obsidebant in circuitu civitatem. Fugit itaque Sedecias per viam, quae ducit ad campestria solitudinis.

4 And the city was breached: and all the men of war fled by night by the way of the gate, which is between the double wall, to the king’s garden. Moreover, the Chaldeans were besieging the city all around. Zedekiah therefore fled by the way which leads to the plains of the wilderness.

5 Et persecutus est exercitus Chaldaeorum regem, comprehenditque eum in planitie Iericho: et omnes bellatores, qui erant cum eo, dispersi sunt, et reliquerunt eum.

5 And the army of the Chaldeans pursued the king, and they seized him on the plain of Jericho; and all the warriors who were with him were scattered, and they left him.

6 Apprehensum ergo regem duxerunt ad regem Babylonis in Reblatha: qui locutus est cum eo iudicium.

6 Therefore, the king having been apprehended, they led him to the king of Babylon in Reblatha: who spoke judgment with him.

7 Filios autem Sedeciae occidit coram eo, et oculos eius effodit, vinxitque eum catenis, et adduxit in Babylonem.

7 But the sons of Zedekiah he killed before him, and he gouged out his eyes, and he bound him with chains, and brought him to Babylon.

8 In the fifth month, on the seventh day of the month—it is the nineteenth year of the king of Babylon—Nabuzardan, the chief of the army, servant of the king of Babylon, came into Jerusalem.

9 Et succendit domum Domini, et domum regis: et domos Ierusalem, omnemque domum combussit igni.

9 And he set fire to the house of the Lord, and the house of the king: and the houses of Jerusalem, and every house he burned with fire.

10 Et muros Ierusalem in circuitu destruxit omnis exercitus Chaldaeorum, qui erat cum principe militum.

10 And all the army of the Chaldaeans, which was with the prince of the soldiers, destroyed the walls of Jerusalem all around.

11 Reliquam autem populi partem, quae remanserat in civitate, et perfugas, qui transfugerant ad regem Babylonis, et reliquum vulgus transtulit Nabuzardan princeps militiae.

11 But Nebuzaradan, the chief of the militia, transported the remaining part of the people who had stayed in the city, and the defectors who had gone over to the king of Babylon, and the rest of the common multitude.

12 Et de pauperibus terrae reliquit vinitores et agricolas.

12 And from the poor of the land he left vine-dressers and farmers.

13 Columnas autem aereas, quae erant in templo Domini, et bases, et mare aereum, quod erat in domo Domini, confregerunt Chaldaei, et transtulerunt aes omne in Babylonem.

13 But the bronze columns that were in the temple of the Lord, and the bases, and the bronze sea that was in the house of the Lord, the Chaldaeans broke in pieces, and carried all the bronze into Babylon.

14 Ollas quoque aereas, et trullas, et tridentes, et scyphos, et mortariola, et omnia vasa aerea, in quibus ministrabant, tulerunt.

14 They also took the bronze pots, and ladles, and tridents, and scyphs, and little mortars, and all the bronze vessels in which they ministered.

15 Necnon et thuribula, et phialas: quae aurea, aurea: et quae argentea, argentea tulit princeps militiae,

15 And likewise the thuribles, and the phials: whatever was gold, gold; and whatever was silver, silver, the captain of the guard took,

16 id est, columnas duas, mare unum, et bases quas fecerat Salomon in templo Domini: non erat pondus aeris omnium vasorum.

16 that is, two columns, one sea, and the bases which Solomon had made in the temple of the Lord: there was no weight of the bronze of all the vessels.

17 Decem et octo cubitos altitudinis habebat columna una: et capitellum aereum super se altitudinis trium cubitorum: et retiaculum, et malogranata super capitellum columnae, omnia aerea: similem et columna secunda habebat ornatum.

17 One column had eighteen cubits in height: and a bronze capital upon it of three cubits in height: and a reticulation, and pomegranates upon the capital of the column, all of bronze: and the second column had similar ornamentation.

18 Tulit quoque princeps militiae Saraiam sacerdotem primum, et Sophoniam sacerdotem secundum, et tres ianitores.

18 The captain of the soldiery also took Seraiah the chief priest, and Zephaniah the second priest, and three doorkeepers.

19 Et de civitate eunuchum unum, qui erat praefectus super bellatores viros: et quinque viros de his, qui steterant coram rege, quos reperit in civitate: et Sopher principem exercitus, qui probabat tyrones de populo terrae: et sexaginta viros e vulgo, qui inventi fuerant in civitate.

19 And from the city one eunuch, who was prefect over the warrior men; and five men of those who had stood before the king, whom he found in the city; and the Sopher, the scribe of the captain of the army, who was proving the tyros from the people of the land; and sixty men from the common people, who had been found in the city.

20 Quos tollens Nabuzardan princeps militum, duxit ad regem Babylonis in Reblatha.

20 Whom, taking them up, Nabuzardan, the prince of the soldiers, led to the king of Babylon in Reblatha.

21 Percussitque eos rex Babylonis, et interfecit eos in Reblatha in terra Emath: et translatus est Iuda de terra sua.

21 And the king of Babylon struck them, and put them to death at Riblah in the land of Hamath; and Judah was transported from his own land.

22 Populo autem, qui relictus erat in terra Iuda, quem dimiserat Nabuchodonosor rex Babylonis, praefecit Godoliam filium Ahicam filii Saphan.

22 But to the people who had been left in the land of Judah, whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had left, he set over them Gedaliah, son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan.

23 When all the captains of the troops heard this, they themselves and the men who were with them—namely that the king of Babylon had appointed Gedaliah—came to Gedaliah at Mizpah, Ishmael son of Nethaniah, and Johanan son of Kareah, and Seraiah son of Tanhumeth, the Netophathite, and Jaazaniah son of the Maacathite, they and their companions.

24 Iuravitque Godolias ipsis et sociis eorum, dicens: Nolite timere servire Chaldaeis: manete in terra, et servite regi Babylonis, et bene erit vobis.

24 And Godolias swore to them and to their companions, saying: Do not fear to serve the Chaldaeans: remain in the land, and serve the king of Babylon, and it will be well with you.

25 Factum est autem in mense septimo, venit Ismahel filius Nathaniae filii Elisama de semine regio, et decem viri cum eo: percusseruntque Godoliam, qui et mortuus est: sed et Iudaeos et Chaldaeos, qui erant cum eo in Maspha.

25 And it came to pass in the seventh month, Ishmael son of Nethaniah, son of Elishama, of the royal seed, came, and ten men with him: and they struck down Godoliah, who also died: and likewise the Judeans and the Chaldaeans who were with him in Maspha.

26 Consurgensque omnis populus a parvo usque ad magnum, et principes militum, venerunt in Aegyptum timentes Chaldaeos.

26 And the whole people, rising up, from small to great, and the princes of the soldiery, came into Egypt, fearing the Chaldaeans.

27 Factum est vero in anno trigesimo septimo transmigrationis Ioachin regis Iuda, mense duodecimo, vigesima septima die mensis: sublevavit Evilmerodach rex Babylonis, anno quo regnare coeperat, caput Ioachin regis Iuda de carcere.

27 But it came to pass in the thirty-seventh year of the transmigration of Jehoiachin, king of Judah, in the twelfth month, on the twenty-seventh day of the month: Evil-merodach, king of Babylon, in the year in which he began to reign, lifted up the head of Jehoiachin, king of Judah, from the prison.

28 Et locutus est ei benigne: et posuit thronum eius super thronum regum, qui erant cum eo in Babylone.

28 And he spoke to him kindly: and he set his throne above the throne of the kings who were with him in Babylon.

29 Et mutavit vestes eius, quas habuerat in carcere, et comedebat panem semper in conspectu eius cunctis diebus vitae suae.

29 And he changed his garments, which he had had in the prison, and he ate bread always in his presence all the days of his life.

30 Annonam quoque constituit ei sine intermissione, quae et dabatur ei a rege per singulos dies omnibus diebus vitae suae.

30 He also constituted for him a ration without intermission, which likewise was given to him by the king day by day, all the days of his life.
